The Mindful Momma Calendars, Coffee, and KidPreneurs

If you’re paying attention in Las Vegas right now, you’ve probably noticed something interesting happening: kids with businesses, brands, microphones, jerseys, performances and parents quietly making it all work behind the scenes.

We lovingly call it momagering. And now, let’s add dadagering to the mix too. The titles are cute. The job? Not so much.

Because what it actually looks like is family calendars that belong in a museum, text threads that never sleep, gear permanently living in the trunk, and conversations that sound like, “Okay, but how does this fit between practice, pop up events, the interview, and the other thing we forgot about?”

I joke that I’m managing my son’s career - mostly because it feels easier than listing the meetings, schedules, and logistics that somehow became my life.

Moms often carry the momager title, but dads are very much in the mix dadagering hard. Filming content, handling logistics, driving across town (again), offering strategy, encouragement, and the occasional “we’ll figure it out” when plans shift.

What makes the Vegas scene especially fascinating is how layered these kids’ lives are. Many kidpreneurs are also athletes.

Artists. Junior journalists. Students with extracurricular schedules that rival full-time jobs. And many of the parents supporting them?

Entrepreneurs themselves -juggling their own businesses while helping nurture their child’s ideas, interests, and ambition.

This isn’t about turning kids into brands. It’s about supporting curiosity, confidence, discipline, and follow-through while still protecting rest, joy, and childhood.

For families wondering where to start, programs like the Vegas Kids Zone KidPreneur Program offer a great entry point, giving kids space to explore business ideas while parents learn how to support without taking over.

So yes, the term might sound playful.

But the work is real. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time for a momager– dadager support group. Entry requirements include a color-coded calendar, snacks in bulk, and a solid relationship with coffee.

This is usually the part where someone says, "Just put your oxygen mask on first." Or, "YouMe first. Then I can show up better. need more self-care." Maybe a pedicure.

Lovely ideas.

3. What is the inspired action?

Also... not quite it. Because "Me First" isn't This question shifts us out of reaction and about pampering yourself. It's about pausinginto wisdom. It invites action from the - before you speak, act, or give - to have a heart, not the head. From clarity, not conversation with yourself. chaos.

A real one. At every fork in the road, there are three questions quietly waiting to be asked.

Simple question. Sneaky answer.

When we actually slow down and listen, we often discover we're doing what we think others want us to do... not what we want at all. And when we consistently abandon our truth, resentment doesn't just appear... it quietly builds, brick by brick.

When we have these conversations with ourselves before having them with each other, something magical happens. We feel grounded. Clear. Aligned.

Me First isn't selfish. It's sacred.

Navigating Divorce with Care, Clarity, and Compassion

This is part of an ongoing series answering questions from readers on how to handle hard subjects with kids.

Divorce is one of the hardest transitions a family can face. For many people, the decision comes quietly, after the holidays, after months or years of trying, and often with a deep sense of uncertainty about what comes next. If you're feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone.

My goal in sharing this information is simple: to help people understand that there is a path forward — one that can be respectful, practical, and less stressful than you may actually expect.

As a local document preparer, I've helped many individuals navigate the paperwork side of divorce, including individual petitions and joint petitions for divorce. Through my work, and my own personal experience with separation, divorce, and custody, I've learned that, when couples are able to communicate and agree that the marriage has irreconcilable differences, the process can often be much simpler.

I always tell parents and couples how much I appreciate it when they come in having made a mutual decision to file. When both parties are willing to sign and move forward together, it can save significant time, stress, and money. In contrast, when one person is unwilling, the process can become lengthy and costly, often involving substantial attorney fees and extended court involvement.

For those already in agreement and simply want to move forward respectfully, having help with the paperwork can make a real difference. Properly prepared documents can help you avoid unnecessary court trips, reduce delays, and keep the focus on what truly matters — healing, stability, and, when children are involved, co-parenting with care.

This is not legal advice or about pushing anyone toward divorce. It's about sharing what I've seen and experienced: When people are informed, supported, and treated with kindness, this difficult chapter doesn't have to feel impossible.

If you're standing at the beginning of this journey, please remember this: There is life, stability, and hope on the other side of this transition. You don't have to navigate it alone, and there are ways to move forward that protect your time, your finances, and your peace of mind.

Beyond the Crown Teen Mom Found Purpose Through Pageantry If you would have told me last year that I would be competing in a pageant, I would have not believed you, let alone believed in myself. My journey has taken me from teen mom to being a part of the empowering USOA pageant community in Las Vegas, throughout the nation and even beyond borders.

Teen Mom to Talented Queen As a mom of four, I had limited beliefs. I would tell myself, “Girl, you could have been more successful if you had waited to get married and followed through with your higher education.”

But, you know what? I’ve been successful since I chose to fulfill the duty of being a mom at the tender age of 16.

After being invited to join United States of America Nevada Pageant organization by a fellow contestant, I met with Katie Ladomerszky, our state pageant director. As she explained and answered my questions and concerns about the pageant system, I decided I would register as a delegate contestant USOA. I became Mrs. Downtown Las Vegas 2025, competing for a chance to win the state title and represent Nevada at Nationals in March.

Little did I know what competing really meant!

It’s a women’s empowerment tool for selfgrowth. The only person you are competing against is yourself, to show judges how you've become the best version of yourself, to live up to the pageant’s motto: Empower, Inspire, Uplift.

I'm always up for a challenge and pageantry has helped me to focus and fulfill my mission.

Serving Self and Others One of the criteria in pageantry is to volunteer. I didn’t know where to start! I eventually chose several nonprofit organizations close to my heart, including Casa Las Vegas and Living Grace Homes.

Documenting my journey as a mom and pageant participant, I’ve inspired both men and women to inquire how they can also get started to volunteer in the community with me.

I'm humbled to say my platform, Heart of Grace, has a waitlist of interested people willing to join me on my next group volunteer event.

Pageantry helped me with my personal growth, highlighted my talent and connected me with amazing people that I now call friends.

The work I have done within USOA has helped me become a better leader in so many ways, including as a mom, advocate, and community member, helping my kids take initiative with home chores, being a voice for children in the foster system, and empowering others to join volunteer events.

And that’s just the start.

What once felt like a struggle, being a teen mom, believing in myself, and having faith, has led me to feel successful.

Pageantry helped me gain self confidence and how to help and serve others beyond the crown.

Q&A with Travel Memoirist Reannon Muth By the time Reannon Muth settled in Las Vegas, she had already backpacked through more than 40 countries, lived in 20 cities, climbed the highest mountain in the continental U.S., and built a career as a freelance travel writer for NPR, Business Insider, and U.S. News & World Report.

But it was her debut memoir, “Unattached: A Year of Heartache, Hiking, and Learning How to Love,” that truly took on a life of its own.

With nearly 12,000 copies sold nationwide (and no big marketing push), her book has been compared to “Wild” and “Eat Pray Love” for its raw honesty and soul-searching journey. Now living in Southern Nevada with her husband, daughter Journey, and two dogs, Muth is at work on a follow-up memoir that blends parenting, spirituality, and the next chapter of her unconventional life.

We caught up with Muth to talk about her writing process, the deeper themes behind her memoir, and what advice she has for aspiring travel writers.

Memoirs often uncover deeper themes like identity, belonging, and resilience. What did you find while writing?

Writing about my childhood and my relationship with my parents uncovered a lot of complicated emotions for me, which surprised me. I ended up leaving much of that out of the book because it felt like it weighed the story down and distracted from the core message, that you can’t truly love anyone unless you learn to let your guard down and be vulnerable.

But that process helped me realize I probably have another memoir in me. In my next book, I plan to explore themes of shame, perfectionism, and workaholism.

Did any travel mishaps make it into the story?

While camping near the peak of Mt. Whitney, I had a very embarrassing bathroom situation. You’ll have to read the book for details, but I still cringe thinking about it. My book has now sold nearly 12,000 copies, and it’s wild to think that so many people now know some of the more intimate details about my life — things I never imagined sharing even with one person, let alone thousands. But laying your life out there is also incredibly freeing.

I used to have a social anxiety disorder that made it hard to do simple things like eat in front of people or use public bathrooms. Now I don’t get embarrassed nearly as easily, which feels like real growth.

How do you hope readers will feel after finishing your memoir?

I hope readers who struggle with anxiety will feel a little more seen and know they’re not alone. But even if someone doesn’t have an anxiety disorder, I think the book can still resonate. Everyone goes through periods of identity struggles, heartache, and insecurity. Those are universal themes, and they’re all present in the book.

Active homeschool programs on the rise It’s that time of year in Las Vegas to get outside!

Homeschool families have an abundance of programs to choose from. The number of homeschooling families has jumped in recent years, and with it the demand for structured ways to keep kids active.

Homeschool P.E. programs give kids a chance to play team sports, learn coordination, and practice sportsmanship in parks, play places and gyms around the city.

Regular movement supports stronger hearts and bones, better mood regulation, said Henry Huggins, owner of Homeschool P.E. “It also teaches teamwork, goalsetting, and perseverance,” he said.

Homeschool groups meet in neighborhood parks and some set up scavenger hunts or “interval games” that combine running with brain teasers, making it part fitness challenge, part field trip.

“Running is simple and flexible,” says homeschool mom and marathoner Alicia Ramirez. “All we need are sneakers, water, and a good playlist. My kids learn goal-setting and endurance without even realizing they’re in PE.”

From Driveway Dreams to LLC She Turned a Hobby into A Makeup Brand

Harper Miller, 12, has already done what many adults only dream about: She turned a simple hobby, making sugar scrubs and lip scrubs, into a real company with an LLC, a growing customer base, and seasonal collections.

From the driveway to a business plan What began as a fun way to make and share something she loved quickly grew when she met her business manager, Lisa Reaver, a local entrepreneur.

Together, they built a business plan, started dreaming up new collections, and learned how to show their products on social media. With support from her family, friends, and followers, Harper raised the money needed to officially launch her business.

“That’s how we got our LLC,” she says.

Just like that, a hobby became a real company.

The moment it clicked For Harper, the turning point came when she saw her audience growing online.

“I realized people were interested in what I had. I knew it was different from other brands, and that’s what makes it special.”

It Takes A Mentor

The Power of One to Spark a Lifetime of Possibility

By Sam Schierholz A mentor is more than a teacher or a professor. It’s someone who listens to you, helps you grow, and believes in you.

When I transferred to UNLV, from the smaller, calmer College of Southern Nevada, I was both nervous and overwhelmed. I wanted to get involved and try as many new things as I could. I sent emails and reached out to clubs and organizations before I ever stepped foot on campus.

Then I met Jason Beatty, the operations manager of 91.5 KUNV and adjunct professor in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at UNLV. He had an opportunity for someone to produce a weekly radio show, and I was eager to challenge myself on this new adventure.

“Careers and life aren’t nearly as structured as college classes,” Beatty said, “Expectations aren’t always clearly defined, and figuring them out can be one of the hardest parts of entering a profession.”

Every week, I edited a radio show called Little Grass Shack for 91.5. I also started hosting a weekly radio show on the student-run radio station.

There were times I felt stuck and frustrated, but he was always there to help me succeed and give me guidance. He praised me on my accomplishments, and gave me positive feedback about my work.

“My approach to mentorship is to treat students the same way I would treat a colleague in the professional world,” Beatty said, “I meet them on their level, speak honestly, and help translate what real-world expectations actually look like.”

New students have thrived under his tutelage in audio production.

“Seeing students develop real skills, and realizing that the materials, structure, and coaching are genuinely effective, is incredibly rewarding,” Beatty said.

An example of his guidance is a student who started with Beatty simply to meet new people and be more involved with the college experience. After joining the radio station, he mentored her throughout her college endeavors until she earned a full-time position at a commercial radio station in Las Vegas.

“Seeing that kind of trajectory, from curiosity to career, is an amazing feeling,” Beatty said, “Even now, when she calls for advice, guidance, or just help translating industry expectations, I’m always happy to be there for her.”

Beatty’s best advice for students is to gain as much real-world experience as possible, and go for all opportunities, even if you don’t feel fully qualified. “As a mentor and hiring manager, I’m often far more impressed by ambition, curiosity, and bravery than by a perfectly polished résumé,” Beatty said.

“The experience you gain by trying, failing, learning, and showing up consistently is what ultimately prepares you for a career,” Beatty said.

During my senior year at UNLV, I signed up for the DJ workshop. I had never touched a DJ controller before in my life. By the time the class ended, I was beat matching and mixing songs perfectly, thanks to my instructor: Kelly Webb, better known as DJ Kelly J. I was struggling to mix songs from a genre I’ve never listened to, a genre in a whole different language, and I thought I’d never figure it out. She pushed me to keep trying until I got it down.

“Sometimes, mentorship is simply saving someone else the time and hassle of going through certain challenges, which I hope I relayed to my students,” Webb said.

Some of her students assisted her while she was pregnant. “I’ve witnessed their growth while also watching my daughter grow up,” Webb said.

A 20-year-old student thrived under Webb’s guidance, while trying to find herself.

Six years later, she’s DJing for the Harlem Globetrotters. “It brought me joy that she stuck with it through all of the challenges and exceeded her own goals,” Webb said.

Webb loves celebrating with her students after they get their first big gig.

“Every single person on this earth needs guidance,” Webb said, “someone that believes in them, and is willing to help them somehow.”

1. Look close to home first.

Teachers, coaches, librarians, family friends, neighbors, or community leaders already know you and want to see you succeed.

2. Be brave and introduce yourself.

It can feel scary, but a simple, “I admire what you do. Could I ask you a few questions?” can open doors. Courage is a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets.

3. Get involved where learning happens.

Clubs, classes, workshops, volunteer projects, and community events are great places to meet people who love to share what they know.

4. Show up and follow through.

If a mentor gives advice, try it. Put in the effort. When you follow through, you show respect — and that builds trust.

5. Build your own dream team.

You don’t need just one mentor. You might have different people who help you with school, business, creativity, or life. Together, they help you grow.

Declutter Challenge!

A simple challenge to clear out the stuff in just 15 minutes a day A new year is the perfect time to reset your home and your routines — without the pressure of doing it all at once. Our January Whole-House Declutter Challenge is designed to help busy families create calmer, more functional spaces through simple, doable steps. With just 15 minutes a day and a focus on one room each week, you’ll build momentum, form lasting habits, and see real progress by the end of the month.

Below is the weekly breakdown of where we’ll begin. You’ll also find daily tips and guidance shared in our Facebook group to help you stay motivated and on track.

Week 1: Living Spaces Start with the areas where your family spends the most time. The goal this week is to clear surfaces and create a sense of calm. Choose a room that’s been bothering you — perhaps one that has become a catch-all for items you’re unsure what to do with. Take it one step at a time, and don’t feel pressured to do everything at once. Small wins add up.

Week 2: Bedrooms This week’s focus is creating a place for everything. For a simple organizing system, grab two boxes or bags and label them Keep and Toss. Begin in one corner of the room and handle items one at a time, deciding whether to keep, toss, or put them back where they belong. This method keeps the process manageable and helps prevent decision fatigue. .Week 3: Closets There are a few ways to slim down your stuffed closets. Before you start, determine your specific goals for the closet. Are you aiming to create more space, improve organization, or update your wardrobe? Having a clear objective will guide your decisions. Take everything out of the closet and immediately put into keep or donate.

Week 4: Bathrooms Start on the countertops and work your way down. If you have help, have someone emptying the cabinets and cleaning them so that you can put things away. Know what you need to organize and have bins ready to put into the clean cupboards. Label the bins, if you like, and put everything away. Keep the countertops at a minimum of clutter to clean up in your quick morning pickup.

PET TALES FROM THE SITTER’S SIDE

Pet sitters are in high demand in our fur-friendly city with more than 167,000 pets in just the city limits, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Highly trained sitters such as Lori Douglas do much more than dole out kibble and kisses.

“Every day is different,” says the owner of By Your Side Pet Services. “You never know if you’re walking into cuddles, comedy, or complete chaos.”

Douglas and her staff are trained in CPR and commands as well as cleaning and a little detective work.

Finding pets in odd places is part of the adventure. Lori once tore apart a kitchen searching for an elderly cat. “I finally heard muffled meows and found her behind the dishwasher. That was her favorite nap spot.”

Some pet parent requests are just as memorable.

“Please take pictures of every poop, note the time, and tell me who did it,” one owner asked and music is a regular request. “Can you leave smooth jazz on until he falls asleep?”

One of her funniest moments involved a boxer puppy with a flair for fashion.

“She got into the laundry and came running out with a bra stuck around her head,” Douglas said. “Then she sat in front of me like, ‘Get this off of me, please.’”

Quirky habits come with the territory. A German Shepherd client “chatters” while backing up toward Lori until he’s close enough for a butt scratch.

“He’s not shy about what he wants,” she said.

But behind the laughs is deep trust.

“People hand you their homes and their family members,” she said. “That’s huge.”

She’s cared for pets when owners were hospitalized and even called ambulances for elderly clients in trouble. “Sometimes, you realize you’re not just watching pets — you’re helping save lives.”

For Lori, that’s why she stays.

“I love giving peace of mind. I love standing in the gap when life throws a curveball,” she said. “And honestly, I love every messy, funny, unforgettable moment along the way.”

From Black-and-White to Blockbusters 52 Classic Movies for Family Movie Night at Home

By Tricia Brookover, publisher of Homeschool Breakroom In our house, Friday night is movie night, at least for the boys. (I’m usually off square dancing, something I started doing a couple of years ago.) The titles were usually something with lots of action or science fiction.

Now that our older kids are in that sweet spot where they are old enough to appreciate a well-told story, even when it comes at a slower pace or without the flashiness of more modern movies, we’ve tweaked the schedule to watch a classic movie over dinnertime. (Then I disappear to square dancing, and they head upstairs for movie #2.)

And this is the list we’ve been working our way through, some of the best classic movies for families.

Some are movies that their dad and I have loved, some we’re seeing for the first time. in.

There’s something pretty cool about experiencing an older film through their eyes.

Do they laugh at the scenes that made us laugh at their age? Did a heavy scene still hit the way it did? What parts of the movie are they still talking about days later?

You just never know which movies will draw them.

Why this selection of movies?

Before you wonder why your favorite ‘90s movie didn’t make the cut, here’s my reasoning: I’m using a very flexible definition of “classic film.” Anything I saw in a theater doesn’t feel like it should qualify! So many of them feel iconic that leaving them out didn’t feel right.

I debated several cut-off points — 1989 (the year I hit my teens), 1995 (the year I graduated high school), or even 1999 (because who doesn’t love a tidy end-ofcentury boundary?).

Michelin is officially coming back to Las Vegas as part of its new Southwest guide, and that means the inspectors are already here, eating in silence, taking notes, and deciding who’s really about that Michelin Star life. Let’s get into locals and sleepers. Partage in Chinatown has been quietly doing elite-level French tasting menus without the Strip hype. Raku might not scream “Michelin” to everyone, but the consistency, technique, and late-night magic make it a real dark horse. And é by José Andrés? Tiny, bold, creative, and unforgettable… it’s exactly the kind of experience Michelin loves.

Strip or off-Strip, classic or unexpected Vegas is back in the global food conversation. And honestly? It’s about time.

2. In a mixing bowl whisk together your vegan sour cream, vegan mayonnaise, lemon juice, and coconut milk.

3. Add all of the other ingredients to the bowl and whisk until fully combined. Refrigerate the dressing for at least 3-4 hours to let the flavors come together.

4. If you want the dressing thinner, add more milk, 1 tsp at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.

Easy Cheesy Garlic Knots Soft, fluffy and fun to make, cheesy garlic knots are a breeze to throw together with kids in the kitchen! They get very excited to show how they can make this beautiful dish to their friends for lunch. This is almost as easy as the Rainbow Cheesecake Bars that were the top kids recipe last year in The Homeschool Cafe!

Ingredients: (Yield: 10 balls) Dough 1 can Grands Biscuits 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Garlic butter sauce 1-2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1/4 tsp. garlic paste 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning

Directions: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Combine dough ingredients in bowl (minus 12 tsp. mozzarella cheese). Split the biscuits in half and lightly stretch dough. Then add a handful (1-2 tsp.) of mozzarella cheese. Tuck and fold the biscuit dough over and roll in your hands to ensure the cheese won’t seep out. Spray pan with butter spray or butter the pan.

Mix together the ingredients for the garlic butter sauce and brush balls with butter.

Sprinkle with salt. Bake for 18-20 mins. (check around 15 min.). Brush with garlic sauce after they’re done. Serve warm and enjoy. If you reheat in the microwave, cover with a cloth towel with a spritz of water, and they should fluff right back up.

Spring dates, like March 15–18, are especially popular for families, which is exactly why early planning matters. Resorts such as Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Disneyland Hotel, and Pixar Place Hotel often sell out (or jump in price) once demand spikes. Booking ahead locks in lower rates and gives you first pick of room types and park access perks.

One of the smartest ways families save is by bundling. Packages that include park tickets and a Lightning Lane Multi Pass simplify planning and reduce time spent waiting in lines (which, let’s be honest, is priceless with kids). Less waiting means more rides, snack breaks, and spontaneous moments that actually feel like a vacation.

This route winds through stretches of Joshua trees, open desert, and sometimes, even herds of wild burros. It’s part of the Mojave Desert National Preserve’s edge, offering far more character than the I-15 route.

Stay at Sandy Valley Ranch and Ask for the Full Experience Sandy Valley Ranch isn’t just lodging — it’s an authentic western experience. If you stay overnight, request their “Cowboy for a Day” package to ride with real wranglers, learn roping techniques, and join a campfire dinner. The owners often host the meals themselves and are known for sharing stories about film crews who’ve shot westerns on the property.

Go Early — and Not Just for Crowds Arrive right when the gates open (usually around 9 a.m.). Mornings not only mean cooler temperatures but also the best light for photos — the rising sun hits the hills behind the town beautifully, giving the whole place a golden glow. It also lets you explore before the tour buses arrive around mid-morning.

Check Calico’s event calendar Special days with reenactments or themed activities can add extra fun to your visit.

Explore the Hidden Corners Walk past the main street and follow the short trail to the Calico Cemetery. It’s one of the most authentic parts of the site, with original 1800s markers and views of the surrounding desert.

Look for unmarked mine entrances and rail tracks tucked behind the shops. These aren’t part of the official tour, but they give a real sense of the town’s mining roots.

Talk to the Shopkeepers and Reenactors Many of the shop owners double as local historians who live nearby in Yermo or Barstow. Ask about the “unofficial” history — ghost stories, Hollywood filming anecdotes (many old westerns shot scenes here), and restoration tales. They often share things not mentioned on the plaques or tours.

Visit the Maggie Mine Last The Maggie Mine tour is the highlight, but if you do it first, you’ll end up missing quieter moments in town. Visit it after you’ve wandered the streets — it gives more context once you’ve seen the mining ruins and exhibits.

Eat in Town — But Know the Favorites Calico House Restaurant: Order the chili or the tri-tip sandwich — locals say they’re the best items on the menu.

Lil’s Saloon: Great for a cold root beer float in a frosty mug; go in the afternoon when the place is less busy.

Use a San Bernardino County Parks Pass If you plan to visit other nearby attractions, like Mojave River Valley Museum or regional parks, get the County Parks annual pass. It often pays for itself after just a couple of visits, and it includes free Calico parking.
