Bright moments of everyday generosity, big and small, good news and great ideas in our valley.
When 12-year-old Ethan first joined Iron Sharpens Iron Mentoring, he struggled to connect with peers and often acted out at home. Twelve weeks later, his family saw a transformation. “Being in the mentorship has really helped give him that confidence to be good,” his parents shared.

This GivingTuesday, December 2, the nonprofit is rallying community support to raise $5,000 to sustain the programs that changed Ethan’s trajectory. What does $5,000 do in real terms?
Enroll 20 youth in a full 12-week mentoring program
Train 5 new volunteer mentors
Provide evidence-based curriculum materials for all participants Fund specialized programming for youth with unique needs
With youth mental health at crisis levels 48% of teens say social media negatively affects their generation access to research-backed mentoring has never been more crucial in Clark County.
Over the next five weeks, Iron Sharpens Iron will share more stories and concrete ways to help On December 2, consider joining their effort so no young person faces challenges alone.
Gratitude to Coach Williams, Executive Director of Iron Sharpens Iron Mentoring, for leading this community-powered work.
Donate on December 2 to their GivingTuesday campaign, or become part of the solution as a volunteer. Iron Sharpens Iron is seeking five new mentors; reach out to coach@ironmentorscom

You know those days when bei thankful feels like a stretch? When the wordgratitudesoundslikeacrueljoke?
That was me knee-deep in disappointment. Everything felt wrong. Everyone felt wrong. Even the mailman couldn't deliver something right My special-needs son had had a tough day, which meant I had too, and the spiral camefast.
So I did what many of us do I made it worse. I put on the saddest song I could find and gave myself permission to fall apart
And I did. The ugly cry kind. The one that makes your face blotchy and your heart raw I cried for the people I've lost especially my parents They've been gone for years, but some days, the missing still feels new. Between sobs, I found myself yelling to the ceiling, "I needyouhere Notinspirit Inphysical"
Eventually, I gathered myself, wiped my face, and grabbed my keys Time to pick upmyson Andthat'swhenIheardit
Tap.Tap.Tap.
At first, I thought it was the car Then I saw it...a woodpecker. In the middle of the Las Vegas desert. On the palm tree rightoutsidemygarage
I froze I've lived here 35 years and have never seen a woodpecker. But there it was, persistent, steady, tapping like a divine metronome Later, I learned woodpeckers symbolize resilience, timing, and communication...a reminder to keep tapping on life, even when it feels hard
It felt like a message from my parents. But it was also something more, a moment of gratitude I didn't see coming
Because here's the truth: gratitude doesn't always show up when things are good Most days, we can list fifty reasons not to be thankful. But it only takes one moment, one tap, to turn it all around
That day, I realized gratitude isn't a feeling we chase. It's a signal we recognize It's the soft knock reminding us to pause, breathe, and notice what's still beautiful...right here, right now.
Sometimes the Universe doesn't whisper. It knocks.

When 18-year-old Arbor View High School senior McKenzie Scott was struck and killed in a crosswalk on Buffalo Drive just weeks before graduation, it shook the Northwest Las Vegas community to its core
“I started the group right after McKenzie was killed,” said Krista Holloway, founder of Walk Safely LV. “She was a senior, full of life, and the driver was four times the legal limit and speeding I decided I’d had enough of this horrible crosswalk.”
After posting on a local parents’ Facebook page asking if anyone had already taken action, Krista said the silence was deafening
“No one answered me. That frustrated me even more,” she said “So I asked parents to help support the effort to get the crosswalk fixed and a lot of parents wanted to do something. That’s when I formed Walk Safely LV on May 3, the day after McKenzie’s tragic accident”

The grassroots group now organizes volunteer crossing guards and community awareness efforts. “We’re currently volunteering as crossing guards on Whispering Sands, which is the other crosswalk at Arbor View,” Krista said “We’re also reaching out to find where else crossing guards are needed When there’s an accident, we go out there, see what the problem is, and make videos for social media.”
She says some fixes are simple but urgent “We need crossing guards at all schools,” she emphasized. “Some schools, like Canyon Springs in North Las Vegas, don’t even have a crosswalk directly in front of them And we need flashing lights everywhere they’re missing”
Krista also believes safety starts with both awareness and accountability. “Parents need to talk to their kids about paying attention when crossing phones down, headphones off And drivers need to slow down in school zones! They’re speeding and not paying attention”
Krista says education and enforcement must go hand in hand “Metro can help by educating drivers about school zone laws,” she said. “CCSD needs to educate students about crosswalk safety and staying alert We really need everyone to educate everyone”
When it comes to policy, she doesn’t hesitate: “Yes, we absolutely need stricter penalties. When punishments feel like a slap on the wrist, people don’t take it seriously Cameras in school zones would be amazing to catch people speeding, parking in bike lanes, double parking, and dropping off kids in traffic.”

From sunrise to sunset, Nevada dairy farmers run nonstop operations. We sat down with Dairy Farmer Tim Sorensen of Cottonwood Dairy to hear what a typical day looks like, how he cares for his cows, and why stuffing (with gravy!) is the ultimate Thanksgiving dish.
Q: Can you walk us through a typical day on your farm?
Farmer Tim: We start milking at 6 am, but the day really begins at 5 am when our feeder starts prepping the Total Mixed Ration (TMR), or feed blend, for our cows. By 5:30 a.m., a portion of my crew arrives to get the milking equipment ready and bring the cows in By 6 am, milking is in full swing
Our herdsmen come in around 7:30 am to check the pens They make sure the cows are healthy, identify any that are sick or cycling, and manage our sick pen Everyone’s working together as a team
In the afternoons, we focus on special projects, equipment maintenance, and monitoring operations If it’s harvest season, we might work until 6 or 7 pm
Q: What goes into the cows’ feed blend?

Farmer Tim: Cattle eat a lot of things humans can’t If it weren’t for them, a lot would go to waste. Our dairy cows eat a mix of corn, alfalfa, cottonseed, and distillers grain. We use beneficial bacteria to ferment the silage, which helps break it down and preserves it for the whole year
We also add dry hay cubes, calcium, potassium, and other minerals All of this gets mixed together in a truck into a soft, easy-to-eat feed. It’s packed with energy and protein. Cows are like athletes; they need that fuel to produce milk.

Q: What are the signs of a happy, healthy cow?
Farmer Tim: Cows are creatures of habit. A happy cow will head straight for the feed bunk when fresh feed arrives. She’ll also get up when it’s time to be milked. She lies in the shade, chews her cud, and looks calm If her eyes look sunken or her ears droop, that’s a sign she might not be feeling well
Q: How do you keep your cows cool during extreme heat?
Farmer Tim: We use open lots with big shade structures These structures alone can drop the temperature by as much as 30 degrees In the milking parlor, the cows go through sprinklers and large fans that cool them off, kind of like walking through a giant cooler. We repeat that three times a day to help them manage the heat
Q: How do you make your farm environmentally friendly?
Farmer Tim: We recently installed solar panels to reduce our reliance on other energy sources It’s good for the environment and can help financially, too
We always carefully track and manage manure to prevent runoff. Our fields are graded with drainage canals to make sure nothing harmful ends up in lakes or waterways. It’s not just about compliance; it’s about doing the right thing
Q: What’s your favorite part of being a dairy farmer?
Farmer Tim: It’s a very challenging but also incredibly rewarding job. I grew up watching my dad, grandpa, and uncle do this, and it gave me a deep respect for the land I love working outside, driving equipment, and watching nature do her thing after all the prep and planning.
There’s something special about planting a crop and trusting the process I put my trust in God and the seasons When it’s time to plant, we plant When it’s time to harvest, we harvest
Q: And finally... what’s your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
Farmer Tim: Stuffing with gravy Ever since I was a kid, that’s been the highlight But it can’t be dry it’s gotta be moist, or it’s just not right!
On behalf of our Nevada Dairy Farmers, we wish you and your family a memorable, tasty, and nutritious Thanksgiving holiday

A brief but alarming message sent 19-year-old artist Sofia Ruhr (right) into a spiral that would take months to recover from. In the early hours of September 7, Ruhr woke up to an email saying her Instagram account was suspended
“I had over 50,000 followers, and I spent a long time building up my account,” Ruhr said “It was my main source of income”
Like many digital creators, her Instagram wasn’t just a social outlet, it was her business, her reputation, and her connection to the art community So when she saw that her account was “suspended for violating community guidelines,” panic took over. “The wording freaked me out It said if they didn’t approve my appeal, my account would be permanently disabled. This was my livelihood.”

Desperate to fix the issue, she did what most of us would do: she turned to Google for help. “I just wanted to talk to a human,” she said. “I didn’t know Meta doesn’t have an actual help number”
At the top of her search results appeared what looked like an official “Meta Help Support” number, except in small print, it said “sponsored.” She didn’t notice.
“I was just frantically trying to find someone who could help me,” she recalled
A man answered, claiming to be from Meta’s tech support. He sounded professional, calm, reassuring. “He told me someone in Florida had hacked my account and used it for cryptocurrency,” she said “It sounded logical I use Venmo and other apps for commissions, so I thought maybe something leaked”
With his reassurance, she downloaded AnyDesk from the App Store, often used for remote tech support. It’s a legitimate app. His intentions were not. “He had me open Venmo, Cash App, and even asked for my bank and Social Security numbers I thought I was safe because it was all through my phone”
The call lasted nearly 90 minutes. Her father, David Ruhr, overheard and intervened just in time. “The guy insisted he was helping me. But the second my dad hung up, I just started bawling.”
Bythen,thedamagewasdone “Hesaw everything.Mysocial,mydebitcard,myID,allofit.”
Within hours, $1,500 was gone from her accounts, spent on cryptocurrency “My heart dropped,” she said quietly. “It was like watching my life drain away in real time”
She and her parents sprang into action, canceling cards, freezing credit, contacting banks and credit bureaus. “It was hell,” she said “I didn’t sleep for 48 hours”
PayPal and Venmo refunded her money, but the ordeal left scars that don’t show up on bank statements. “I had to change my phone number, make a new email, even close my checking account,” she said. “Basically, I had to rebuild my online identity”

LocalteenartistSofiaRuhrlostaccesstohermore than50,000fanswhenherbusinessInstagram accountwassuspended.Attemptingtogetitback, shenearlylosteverything.
“I lost a community of people and artists that were going to help me in my career. It’s more than losing an app, it’s losing a piece of yourself.”
She shared her story publicly to warn others. “I made a post about what happened, and it went viral Thousands of people said the same thing happened to them. I just wish Instagram would tell users, ‘Hey guys, we don’t have a phone number.’”
With the help of a lawyer, she sent Meta attorneys a demand letter seeking full recovery On Oct 27, she received her account back in full and has her fans back, plus a few new friends at Rikuumii, on Instagram
The experience has changed how she sees online life. “People believe the first thing they see We need better education, for older people and younger ones like me, on what to watch out for.”
She still checks her bank account “every 10 minutes,” a leftover habit from those anxious days. “It’s still hard. I worked seven years for that following, all organic, and I’m proud of it”

Every year, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has released several press announcements encouraging residents and visitors to protect their information and belongings As part of its Holiday Shopping Safety Initiative, the department increases patrols and uses technology to deter theft in high-traffic shopping areas throughout the holiday season
Here are a few tips to keep yourself and your family safe this holiday season both online and in person.

Secure your phone account: Set a strong PIN or password with your cell carrier to prevent unauthorized account changes
Use strong security for bank accounts: Use complex passwords, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), beyond just text messages if possible, and consider using a dedicated authenticator app or security key
Be wary of unsolicited contact: Never give personal information over the phone to someone who called you. If you get a suspicious call from your bank, hang up and call the bank back on a number you know is legitimate.
Protect your personal information: Be cautious about what information you share online or through text messages and be on the lookout for phishing attempts.
Secure your phone: Keep your phone's operating system and apps updated, use a VPN when on public Wi-Fi, and install reputable security software.

When the holidays roll around, most families are ready to ditch the books and just soak in the season (and the cocoa) Even though my twins are back in high school now, I’ve found myself keeping some of our old homeschool traditions alive, because honestly, learning together during the holidays was always one of my favorite parts
It’s not about “doing school” over break. It’s more about keeping curiosity alive like baking cookies and turning it into a mini chemistry lesson, or reading classic holiday stories together by the tree A little creativityandconnectiongoalongway
If you’re looking for inspiration, The Homeschool Breakroom has a great Fun Winter Learning Ideas for Kids video. It’s a perfect reminder that learning doesn’t have to stop when the holiday lights come on, it just looks a little cozier.

Use a Seasonal Unit Study
We like “The 12 Days of Christmas School” from Literary Adventures for Kids” when the kids were in elementary age and continued to use it when they went back to school
It offers a ready-made 12-day holiday adventure for your homeschool It includes: language arts, science, nature study, math, art, music and world cultures
Integrate it into the break by choosing a “day” from the unit plan and pair it with your holiday traditions for a structured-yet-fun experience
For example: Day 3 focuses on “Gingerbread house planning” Have yourkidsdesigntheirownmini-houses with household materials, measuring edgesandareasastheygo.

The cosplay community is well known for their bright, fun, and usually pretty complex costumes The public sees the smiles and shimmers of the pictures and videos posted online, but what is it actually like being a cosplayer? I interviewed two local teens, Roki Paredes and Casper Lawing, who create cosplay characters. They shared what it was really like to be a part of this infamous and close-knit community
Q: What inspires you to create costumes?
Casper: Ever since I was a kid, I loved dressing up, and when I found out cosplaying existed, I knew that that’s what I wanted to do.
Roki: I was going to con and I knew that people usually cosplay when going to a con, so I borrowed a robe from my step mom and made a closet cosplay and just fell in love with cosplay along the way.

Q: What is your favorite experience you've had with a fellow cosplayer?
Casper: I saw another cosplayer who was cosplaying from the same anime as me, so we just ended up hanging out for a while after that
Roki: Just recently, I met up with a friend for a cafe event and we went in cosplay, and it was the first time I did a collaborative cosplay.
Q: What do you think could potentially scare off newer cosplayers?
Casper: The pressure of needing experience, skill and money is threatening to younger or newer cosplayers.
Roki: I wanna say just the thought of getting hate online. There are hate comments that could be pretty hurtful, but after a while you learn to ignore them
Q: What’s something in the community you wish would change?
Casper: I wish people would be more accepting of people of color cosplayers, and cosplayers with different cosplayers I love when people add their own style into cosplays, and I wish people would be more accepting of that.
Roki: Having to compare yourself to other cosplayers because they're better or even more problematic I just want all the cosplayers to get along, man
Q: What platforms do you use?
Casper: TikTok doesn’t have much reach, and it’s harder for alternative people to get many views because you only really get views if you post things from a super popular piece of media And YouTube has some similar problems with the reach.
Roki: TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube There aren't really cons about YouTube and the pros are more cosplayers and nicer I’m privated on TikTok right now, so I only get notifications from my friends There’s nothing really wrong about Instagram. I’ve only gotten a few hate comments, but it’s mostly compliments.
Q: What advice can you give?
Casper: Don’t compare yourself to big cosplayers, and focus on having fun than getting views, and you don’t have to focus on the accuracy of your cosplays, and just have fun Cosplay is about having fun, that’s what it’s all about.
Roki:Startoffslow, likewithcloset cosplaysbeforejumpingintomore complexcosplays It’sbettertostartoff witheasiercosplaysbeforegetting intomorecomplicatedones
Despite the highs and lows, the cosplay community is a welcoming, expansive, and tight knit community of people sharing their creativity, their passion, and their love of characters

Recently, I got to do something ridiculously cool: roll into Channel 3, tour the set, and sit at the actual anchor desk where the sports magic happens. Yep, the desk It’s definitely a dream come true, especially for a kid like myself with aspirations of being a sports anchor and journalist (But don’t get me wrong I still want to be on the field too.) And the best part? I was there to interview Bryan Salmond, the sports guy who’s seen pretty much everything Final Fours, UFC cards, MLB playoffs and he’s got stories for days
First off, me and Bryan instantly bonded over boxing He said, out of all the events he’s covered, the Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton fight was the most fun, and it even inspired him to start boxing. Not just fitness-boxing, either He’s had two amateur fights Two!
Bryan gave me real boxer wisdom, too I told him I’d been working combos on, uh, doors and a brick wall (don’t judge), and he literally stopped me, “Shadow box, instead, so you don’t break your hands and fix your form”
Lesson learned: strings can swing
He even offered to link me with his coach, who trains kids and adults, including one of Adele’s violinists whose jab is concertmaster sharp.

Then, Bryan dropped a piece of NFL history I did Seahawks’ infamous goal-line interception in the Super the sideline, filmed the play on his phone, posted it… a days That clip got scooped up all over the internet, Bleac
Talk about a legendary angle!

That whole Super Bowl trip was wild for another reason: Boston was snowed in so bad that his flight back got diverted to New York That was literally his first assignment when he moved there.
Talk about a “welcome to the job” moment.
My favorite line from the day, though, was advice from his dad: “Never give luck credit for hard work” He said luck is just opportunity meeting preparation, and if you grind, you deserve what you get That one’s going straight on my wall and my next deck of affirmation cards.
Bryan also showed how he pays it forward He mentored an intern, Scooby, by bringing him to Patriots practices and Jets games to run reps on camera Years later? Scooby’s anchoring on ESPN. Plus, Bryan’s big on telling folks to be brave enough to start small even if that first TV job is in a place like Missoula, Montana Pack the dream, not excuses.

Between the boxing talk, a viral Super Bowl moment, and getting to sit where the pros deliver the news, this day felt like a highlight reel. If you’re chasing a big goal like sports, media, or whatever, Bryan’s TV path is proof: learn the craft, take the shot, and keep your hands up. And if you see me shadow boxing instead of punching walls? Mind your business I’m just getting ready for my close-up

This holiday season, Vegas Kids Zone is returning the love we get all year from our local seniors.
Through our Adopt a Grandparent program, local families and kids are paired with seniors in the community for simple but meaningful acts of kindness: a handmade card, a cozy visit, or even a quick phone call that brightens someone’s entire week
It started as a small idea of connecting young hearts with older souls But thanks to our many kindhearted locals, it grew into a beautiful chain of friendships Some of our kidpreneurs now deliver their own crafts or baked goods to “adopted grandparents,” while others share stories, laughter, and holiday treats

Many seniors who live alone or in care facilities look forward to these visits all year long For them, a child’s letter or drawing can mean the world And for our young volunteers, it’s a reminder that giving back can be as simple as showing up. Because at Vegas Kids Zone, we believe connection builds community and that every generation has something special to share.
Grandparents, we’d love to connect with you this fall! Join us at the Nov 8 Kidpreneur Market inside Fantastic Indoor Swap Meet for a day of kid-run shops and family fun Need ideas? Check out our Guide for Grandparents in Las Vegas for inside info on all there is to do in the region!
Miss Nevada Teen USA 2025 Shares Her Story
ByKimberleyMcGee
At just 17, Miss Nevada Teen USA 2025 Cameron Reese is redefining what it means to lead with empathy From overcoming dyslexia and depression to creating a movement that helps students feel seen and supported, she’s turning her own challenges into a message of hope and connection.
When Cameron, an Arbor View High School senior, talks about her platform Beyond the Backpack, her warmth and purpose shine through What started as a way to help students feel included has grown into a personal mission to make sure every teen knows they belong, especially when life takes an unexpected turn

Cameron’s passion for helping others began close to home “My sister’s journey with scholarships inspired my advocacy,” she said “Even though she had a full-ride, she kept going and it was amazing to see where that extra money could go”
Watching her sister’s determination taught Cameron how persistence can create possibilities, not just for herself, but for others, too.
Diagnosed with dyslexia in seventh grade, Cameron admits she often felt like she was falling behind. When she repeated the grade and switched schools, she lost the familiar faces that made school feel safe That experience led to Beyond the Backpack, a platform that helps students find “a home away from home” on campus.
“I know what it feels like to start over,” Cameron said “I want to make sure no one else feels that alone.”
Representing Nevada at nationals in Reno, she was affectionately called the “Hometown Girl.” The support she felt from her community reminded her why she does what she does.
At the heart of her work is one clear goal: to normalize open conversations about mental health. “As a teen, I often felt like the topic was off-limits,” she said “I want to help create spaces where those conversations are normal, where it’s okay to say, ‘I’m struggling,’ and know someone’s there to listen”

Through her authenticity and leadership, Cameron hopes to inspire other young people to be brave enough to start those hard talks “Being a light for people isn’t always easy, ” she says “But if I can start the conversation, maybe we can break the barriers together”
Dr. Rhea Watson, owner of My Scholarship Solutions, dispels myths and asks, “Someone’s going to win it why not you?”
Scholarships are only for straight-A students or athletes.
That's probably the number-one misconception I hear Families often think scholarships are reserved for 4.0 students, star athletes, or those with financial need The truth? There are scholarships for everyone There are awards for left-handed students, volunteers, gamers, future teachers, children of single parents you name it Some scholarships are based on creativity, leadership, or simply a student's abilitytotelltheirstorywell

Wait for high school to apply.
Scholarship readiness starts as early as elementary school There are contests, summer programs, and early-learner scholarships that plant those first seeds. By middle school, students can start keeping a 'brag sheet' a simple list of their volunteer hours, awards, and goals By high school, that foundation makes applying easy But even adults returning to school have opportunities We tell families all the time: It's never too early, or too late, to apply for free money

Side hustles and hobbies don’t count.
Scholarship committees love applicants who show initiative, leadership, and heart. Volunteering demonstrates empathy and responsibility Entrepreneurship, like selling bracelets or starting a tutoring service, shows creativity and problemsolving Students often think they need a long list of activities, but it's really about depth, not quantity One strong story about leading a service project or creating a business that helps others can make an essay unforgettable. That's why we emphasize storytelling We help students connect their real-life experiences to scholarship prompts in a way that captures attention and emotion.
I encourage parents to help their children build strong reading and writing habits and engage in community activities.

Don’t wait until senior year to start thinking about scholarships. Begin early by exploring your interests, joining clubs, or volunteering in your community When students take part in meaningful experiences, the stories practically write themselves The best essays come from authentic moments not rushed deadlines
Turn Everyday Wins into Application Gold.
A scholarship essay isn’t about being perfect it’s about being real. Did you start a small business, help a neighbor, or tutor a classmate? Those experiences reveal leadership and compassion, which are the exact qualities judges want to see Capture them in your essays and connect them to your goals for the future
The most successful applicants treat scholarship searching like a part-time job. Create a simple system to track deadlines, essay topics, and award criteria. You’ll soon notice patterns many applications ask similar questions Repurpose and refine your essays instead of rewriting from scratch That’s how you apply smart, not stressed

The glow inside Voltaire Theater inside The Venetian feels like something out of a dream. Soft purples and pinks bounce off crystal chandeliers, a glittering Christmas tree is tucked into the corner, and you sit in velvet couches so plush you’ll want to stay long after the last note fades. It’s elegant but cozy, like Vegas’ best-kept secret hiding inside a bustling casino.
And now, it’s home for Leona Lewis
“When you come in, it’s just so breathtaking,” she said, eyes wide with genuine delight. “It’s nice as a performer to actually look out and be like, ‘Oh, this is so nice.’”
Lewis’ residency will fill the intimate theater with the soulful, shimmering sound she’s known for and a little something extra.
“It’s gonna be very soulful,” she said. “We’re gonna have a kind of jazzy feel as well—there’s a brass section, and I love that energy.”
Family is at the heart of it all. Her husband, Jauch, who produces several Vegas shows, helped her bring the vision to life
“My little girl has had a lot of input, especially in the dresses,” Lewis laughed. “‘Mommy, you should wear this one!’ she’ll say.”
And there will be plenty of gowns “The main thing is the music, of course, but I do love a good outfit change,” she teased “I won’t say how many, but there’ll definitely be a few surprises ”
The show is meant to be shared with everyone “Bring your kids, your grandma, everyone can enjoy it together,” Leona says “I’m very close to my family, so everything I do has to resonate with that ”
Fans can expect a blend of her biggest hits and festive favorites from her holiday album Her personal favorite? “The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole “It always makes me feel warm and cozy, like Christmas has really begun,” she said
When she’s not on stage, Leona loves soaking up the Vegas magic, from Cirque to Celine “My first show here was Celine Dion, which was unbelievable,” she recalled. “And I saw Lady Gaga a while back Incredible.”
Still, she’s most excited to show her daughter a different side of the city. “I’d love to go to the Grand Canyon, I’ve never done that,” she said. “I want to take her hiking and explore nature together ”
Leona’s heart for Vegas might soon expand beyond the stage, too. She’s in talks to bring her vegan coffee shop to town “That would be a dream,” she said. For now, she’s a regular at Chef Kenny’s “Me and my husband order everything when we go there.”

A childhood filled with imagination and laughter and years serving in the US Air Force formed local author Torthell Robinson’s gift of storytelling

“When people connected emotionally to my words or I made them laugh,” he said,” it made me realize storytelling was more than a hobby It was my purpose”
That passion led to “Thank You for Your Service,” a children’s book inspired by his own military journey.

“I served with a lot of friends and colleagues who were away from their children for long periods of time,” he said. “Now that I’m a father, I couldn’t imagine being away from my son that long I wanted to create a book that helped parents and children feel more connected”
He released his second children’s book on September 11, an intentional tribute. “I joined the Air Force right before September 11 happened,” he said “Launching the book on that date was my way of honoring the courage that defined that day and continues to define heroes who run toward danger when others run away”
His publishing company, Book Collection by Torthell, was born out of a desire for freedom and representation “There are only five big publishing houses, and they don’t tell everyone’s story,” said Robinson, who is also author of an adult fiction series, “Father Time.” “Too many voices, especially minority and veteran voices, get filtered or rejected I wanted to create something that gave authors control of their art”

His advice for aspiring writers? “Be fearless The world needs your story,” he said “Don’t wait for permission or validation Storytelling is an art but more importantly, it’s a responsibility. You could be the change the world needs.”

As for what’s next, he’s deep into the final chapter of his Men Will Be Boys trilogy and expanding his children’s division “There’s a lot on the horizon,” he said “And I’m excited to keep building stories that matter.”

Araujo’s-WhereFlavorandFamilyMeet

If you’ve ever doubted that vegan food can hit just as hard as carne asada, one bite from Araujo’s Vegan Kitchen will change your mind Mr and Mrs Araujo have been serving up plant-based Mexican comfort food for years, and their story is just as rich as their seasoning.
Their journey started back in 2006 after Mrs Araujo was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

“The doctor told me to eat less meat,” she said. “So we started with chicken and fish, and then one day I said why not just vegetables?”

That one choice sparked a lifestyle, a business, and a movement that’s been growing ever since
They couldn’t afford a restaurant, so they invested their savings into a food truck
“It was always my dream,” Mr Araujo told me “My dad owned restaurants, so I guess it’s in my blood”
But not everyone was on board in the beginning
“My family thought I was crazy,” Mr. Araujo laughed. “They said, ‘We eat animals!’ and they gave me a hard time for years Now they sneak my food when they visit”
Nearly three decades later, the Araujos have mastered the art of turning tradition vegan. From soy chicharron fries to asada tacos, everything is seasoned to perfection
“We marinate our soy for days,” he said. “We don’t rush flavor.”
Even with the challenges of running a small vegan spot in Vegas, the Araujos stay committed. At Araujo’s, it’s not just vegan food; it’s proof that family, flavor, and compassion can all share the same plate
My Favorites:
The fries loaded (no chicharron), a cold horchata, and the carne asada tacos. Trust me, perfection.
