Kindness Zone

Bright moments of everyday generosity, big and small, good news and great ideas in our valley.

This month in the VKZ Kindness Zone, we highlight Kumei Norwood, 16, the beautiful heart and brains behind Tofu Tees inside Fergusons Downtown She turned kindness into action and creating a resource for locals to get aid in tough times

Families were able to stop by Tofu Tees, 1028 E Fremont St, Suite 111, to pick up essentials like: Diapers Formula Wipes Baby food And even the occasional brand-new car seat

All at no cost, no purchase necessary

Every item was donated by customers and community members, and a beautiful reminder of what happens when a neighborhood shows up for one another.

This is just one of the many reasons this local teen landed at the very top of our Kindness Zone list She’s been a powerful advocate for so many, consistently showing what true community spirit and entrepreneur spirit looks like In everything she did this month, she lifted up local kids and supported our community at large

And just like that, in the middle of a regular, chaotic day, the spark of Sami's Secret Santa was born.

It was meant to be part dinner table, part toy store, part community hug A night where every person, parents included, felt celebrated.

Before we could bring the dream fully to life, Sami passed away unexpectedly at just 34 years old on December 20th. A heartbreak that knocked the wind out of everyone who loved her And yet... grief has a way of pointing you back to what matters most.

I couldn't imagine doing it without her And I couldn't imagine not doing it. So I carried our dream forward in her honor

Last year, we served 3 families and 13 children. This year, we're serving 4 families and 15 children The village is coming back one family, one meal, one moment of love at a time.

The magic of Christmas isn't lost It's right here, in the simple truth that started it all: The greatest gift we can give is each other. And through Sami's Secret Santa, that gift lives on

A Tradition of Love Carried on by Sami’s Kids

Vegas Kids Zone and local partners unite to uplift the foster community with a celebration born from friendship, fueled by kindness, and carried forward in a local mom’s posthumous honor.

We join forces with generous local partners throughout the year, and particularly during the holidays. Our mission is always rooted in kindness and connection. Sami’s Secret Santa is a prime example of our community as well as what we can do when kid’s lead the efforts to make the world a better place in honor of their late mother

Creating more than just a moment

Sami's Secret Santa is a love-woven tradition born from a conversation between two moms who simply wanted Christmas to be more about giving than receiving

What began as a casual chat between friends, Sami Contreras and Heather Criswell, soon grew into a celebration where families could gather, share a meal, laugh, play, and feel the kind of connection that's easy to lose in the holiday rush.

Then, life shifted Sami passed away unexpectedly at 34 Instead of fading, with the help of her children, the dream grew.

Each year, families come together for a warm dinner, thoughtful gifts, and games that spark that childlike sparkle in everyone. But the true gift is the atmosphere: a room where every person is seen, celebrated, and wrapped in the feeling of belonging

It’s about what’s outside the box

Sami's Secret Santa is a reminder that love doesn't leave it multiplies. And sometimes, one heartfelt conversation becomes a tradition that touches an entire community.

This year’s Sami’s Secret Santa is Dec 6 at Audio Integrations, which has kindly donated their space for the dinner and party for more than 15 foster kids and their families

Opera for Everyone

A New Era Begins at Opera Las Vegas

Cecilia Violetta López’s journey to the stage and heights of opera started in an Idaho beet field

“I never imagined opera would be my life,” the newly appointed General Director and CEO of Opera Las Vegas said “I grew up pulling beets in the fields of Idaho My mom would distract us with mariachi music, teaching my brother and me life lessons between the rows We hated being in the fields, but she turned that time into something beautiful. She always said, ‘If you want something, you have to work for it.’”

When Lopes talks about opera, her whole face lights up, and within seconds, you understand why she has become one of the most compelling new leaders in the national opera world López brings a rare mix of world-class artistry, deep community roots, and a story that is nothing short of cinematic

She changed her degree, graduated with a vocal performance focus, and by December2011beganperformingprofessionally. “I’vebeensingingoperaeversince.”

Opening the Doors Wider

López is passionate about education, outreach, and making opera accessible to families partly because she knows exactly how it feels to think opera isn’t “for you”

“I completely understand that feeling,” she says “Even my mom didn’t get it at first. Many people think opera is for the elite But the stories we tell onstage are deeply human. They’re relatable, emotional, and real”

Opera Las Vegas always provides supertitles in both English and Spanish “Everything being said on stage you’ll see it word for word,” she said. “No one is left guessing”

She also loves surprising newcomers with the backstage magic

“Opera is this mysterious art form, but it’s actually incredibly fun and expressive. No two performances are the same And a lot of people forget they’ve already heard opera Bugs Bunny made opera popular for generations!”

Under her leadership, families will see more invitations to peek behind the curtain “We’re planning school outreach, youth programs, backstage tours, and homeschool days I want kids to stand where I once stood seeing something for the first time and thinking, Wow, this is possible for me.”

Holiday Season: A New Warmth on the Opera Stage

December brings one of the first glimpses of López’s vision: involving more children and families “We’re introducing a children’s chorus in ‘The Poor Lost Santas,’ which pairs beautifully with ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors,’ she says. “It’s heartfelt, it’s magical, and it’s perfect for the holidays” And yes, she promises: this is only the beginning

“Next season will have a lot of changes,” she hints “We’ll honor the classics, but you’ll also see things we’ve never done before”

For Families Who Aren’t Sure Opera Is ‘Their Thing,’

López offers the same reassurance she gives her own relatives “Opera is for you,” she said “Come experience it Bring your kids Ask questions Feel the music We’re building something welcoming, inclusive, and full of joy. And we want you to be part of it.”

When asked what audiences can expect next year?

“Let’s just say the community will be more involved, more excited, and more represented on our stage than ever before”

Inside the Music

Hometown orchestra blends tradition, creativity, and community

What’s the hardest part about rehearsing for a big performance?

The Las Vegas Philharmonic brings music to life in a way that feels fun, accessible, and uniquely Vegas. Members from the orchestra chimed in on their style, their big plans, and how they’re inspiring the next generation of musicians across Southern Nevada. You’ll often get the sense that the orchestra loves honoring the classics but also isn’t afraid to try something new

The toughest part of rehearsing is making sure every tiny detail comes together from timing, balance, expression, and all the little moments that make a performance feel seamless. With so many musicians on stage, that takes real concentration

The most fun part is the energy in the room when the music starts to gel You can feel the excitement growing, and everyone knows, “Okay, this is going to be special.” That shared moment of discovery is one of the best feelings in the world.

Our concerts are welcoming and family friendly, and the orchestra brings music to life in a way that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re 5 or 95.

Our concerts are colorful, energetic, and full of moments that spark curiosity and imagination You don’t need to know anything about classical music to have a great time. Our musicians are incredible storytellers who use sound to paint pictures, create emotions, and bring people together

What pieces or themes are you most excited to perform this season, and why?

This season, we’re especially excited about programs that tell stories through music From magical movie moments to powerful symphonies, each concert offers something different for families to connect with whether it’s the thrill of a big orchestral sound or the peaceful beauty of a quiet melody

We love performing music that sparks imagination, and this year’s lineup is full of those moments.

Many kids in our community are learning instruments. What advice do you have for young musicians who want to someday play in a symphony?

Keep your curiosity alive and make music a part of your daily routine! You don’t have to practice for hours every day; just practice consistently and with intention Listen to lots of different music, go to live performances, and work with teachers who inspire you

Most importantly, remember that everyone in a symphony started exactly where you are: learning notes, making mistakes, and growing through dedication and consistency.

What’s something surprising about being part of a symphony that most people don’t know?

Many people don’t realize that being in a symphony is a lot like being part of a sports team. We rehearse together, communicate without speaking, and rely on each other to create something bigger than any one musician could do alone There’s a lot of laughter, problem-solving, and teamwork behind the scenes.

BehindtheMagic

Here’s their conversation, dancer to dancer and Marie to Marie For more info and to purchase tickets, go here. TWOYOUNGMARIESTAKETHELEADOFNEVADABALLET THEATRE’SICONICHOLIDAYSHOW

With Nevada Ballet Theatre preparing to debut its breathtaking new production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® December 13–28 at The Smith Center, we wanted to do something special for this reimagined, glittering holiday spectacular

To celebrate this milestone, we sat down with two of the students stepping into one of the most beloved roles in all of ballet: Marie. But we didn’t just interview them

We let them interview each other

In a warm, funny, and genuinely adorable conversation, 11-year-old Layla and 12-year-old Aria, both veterans of NBT’s productions, sat side-by-side and talked about everything from dancing with the company to throwing ballet shoes at the Rat King

As NBT President & CEO Beth Barbre and Artistic Director Roy Kaiser shared, “Our hope is to create an enduring holiday tradition for decades to come that will enchant Las Vegas audiences and nurture the next generation of artists and arts patrons”

Watching these two Maries light up while talking about the show makes it clear: That next generation is already here.

What has it been like being Marie?

Layla: I was scared at first because I didn’t know what to expect, but now it’s really fun.

Aria: Same. I was super nervous to meet Miss Sandy again, even though we worked with her for the Black & White Ball But rehearsals have been amazing.

Can you explain the story from Marie’s point of view?

Aria:There’sthisyounggirlMarie,andshehasalittlebrothernamedFritz ItisonChristmas EveattheStalbaumhouse,wherefamilyandfriendsarrivetocelebrateanddance.

Layla: After the Party Scene, Marie goes looking for her Nutcracker. When she wakes up, she sees Drosselmeyer on top of a giant clock and gets scared Then everything changes giant mice, giant soldiers the whole scene transforms!

Do you two have any pre-show rituals?

Both: Yes!

Layla: We shake our hands eight times, then our legs, then 4, 4, 3, 2, and 1s

Aria: And the whole kid cast joins us We also have a secret handshake but it’s secret

Any funny rehearsal moments?

Layla: I fell backward running in rehearsal. It was loud very dramatic.

Aria: We both had to throw our ballet shoes at the Rat King. One time I aimed wrong and the shoe flew across the whole room No one got hit, thankfully!

What have you learned from this experience?

Layla: I’ve learned to act more while dancing. You have to show emotions with your whole body so the audience understands the story

Aria: Same using my body and not just my face And honestly just have fun!

Anything you want future dancers to k

Layla: Do your best! No judgment here

Aria: Smile, have fun, and when you danc someone actually look at them Don’t i your Fritz!

Your big final message?

Both: Three, two, one… Come see The Nut

From Leaps to Laughs

Watching majestic gymnasts swing from bar to bar and spin elegantly through the air during a show inspires many to pursue this career path.

I had the opportunity to interview Marylene Hickok Cameron, an acrobat and member of Cirque du Soleil She’s performed in “La Nouba,” “Zarkana”,”KA”, and off-Strip shows such as 1230 clowns With the help of Marylene, I’ll be diving into the performance industry of Las Vegas

Marylene has been a professional acrobat for 26 years and performs at the show KA, one of the most famous shows in Las Vegas!

Everything, from the one-of-a-kind stage to the amazing performers, gives KA a sort of magic that draws people in KA is about two imperial twins who get separated, and their journey to finding each other again The show is known for its heart-dropping stunts, as well as its beautiful combination of martial arts and acrobatics

The performance industry has a wide variety of things to offer. It’s an extremely interesting career path, and one you could consider for your future. For those interested in gymnastics, Maylene has some advice.

“It’s good to have a base of gymnastics,” she said “The more you have things like dance, theater, or music, the more you have to offer” And even if you don’t make it into the show you wanted to join, her advice is to always “Push through, try again, and go for it”

When Marylene was younger, she did dance and played a little bit of music She also joined a double program for the circus and regular academics. Her talents and work allowed her an opportunity to join the circus.

Acrobatic career paths aren’t the only ways to go in this industry. Marylene is also a clown! Although it may sound easy, clowning takes skill Being able to read the room is vital

Clowning helps people forget about what they're going through and makes them laugh and connect with each other

Marylene was first introduced to clowning through a teacher from another Cirque show and has been doing clowning for quite some time She recently debuted “Surprise,” about women in our society, at the Vegas Theatre Company, directed by Shannan Calcutt.

Both acrobats and clowns put a great amount of work into their shows and are fundamental to the performance industry

But there are many types of professionals needed to put on a good show., such as dancers, artists, sound engineers, lighting technicians, musicians, stage hands, costume designers, carpenters, technicians, and managers, just to name a few

If you have a passion for a career in the performance industry, consider getting involved with a local theatre companies. Take Marylene’s advice, and “Push through, try again, and go for it”

2025YearinReview-TheEats,ThePeople,andthe MomentsIWon’tForget

If I had to sum up this year in one word, it would honestly be flavor. Not just on the plate, but in the stories, the people, the surprises, and the moments that made me stop and think, “Yeah this is why I love doing this.”

When I introduced this column in January, I had no idea how many different sides of the Vegas food scene I’d get to explore. I knew I’d eat good food, guaranteed, but I didn’t know I’d end up learning about family legacies, health journeys, cultural history, and what it really means to tell the truth about food without tearing people down

This year took me every One month I was at Oc Prime interviewing Kes about her career and be scenes work with “Hell’s Kitchen” Next, I was in Marie’s, talking with for linebacker Brandon Ma about teamwork, South flavor, and why running restaurant is harder tha running drills on the fie

Then came the vegan w Tarantino (above), owner of Tarantinos with husband Mike, brought out compassion, Italian comfort food, and one of the strongest stories I’ve heard all year I even rounded up the top vegan eats around the city and proved that Las Vegas is quietly becoming a plant-based powerhouse And VeggiEAT? Those Buffalo wings with the sugarcane “bone” deserve their own trophy, no debate

But one of the biggest moments of the year didn’t even happen over a plate, it happened at Pizza Rock, when I sat down with Al Mancini (top photo). He blessed my pizza game with all the background on different types of pies and then gave me a full masterclass on food writingintegrity, honesty, and why telling the truth matters even when it’s not popular. That interview changed how I write forever and how I view pizza.

Quick Bites

Of course, not everything was deep I hit Allegiant Stadium and found out stadium food is basically running its own Pro Bowl now - Pizza Rock slices, Picanha steak, Rollin’ Smoke BBQ - all of it went crazy And my Budget Bites Edition proved that you don’t need a celebrity chef budget to eat well in Vegas. From Milpa tacos to Amari’s happy hour pizza, your wallet AND your stomach can win at the same time

Looking back, this year wasn’t just about trying new dishes. It was about leveling up - as a writer, as a journalist, and as someone who really pays attention to what food can tell you about people, culture, and community

And the best part? I’m just getting started

If you’ve got a spot, a truck, a chef, an event, or a dish you think deserves a feature next year, send it my way. The 2026 food adventure is already loading and I’m ready

Split the Twizzlers into 1-inch pieces

PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES

Ingredients

y Christmases

No matter how busy my mom was, each December, she pulled out her book of treasured recipes and baked up cookies of every variety imaginable.

When I became a mom, I couldn’t wait to carry on the cookie tradition Then reality hit. I had kids with food allergies so all those classic recipes I grew up with went out the window! I know what it’s like to be left out thanks to celiac disease, and I decided right then and there that my kids would never have to face that at home. I headed to the kitchen and tinkered until I created recipes that could be safe for all my kids and make them happy.

That’s exactly how these soft, chewy peanut butter cookies came to be Packed with rich peanut butter flavor, they’re a classic that everyone can enjoy, no matter their allergies. With just a handful of pantry staples, you can whip up a batch in minutes for an easy dessert or an after-school snack

Behind the Magic

Magic, Mission, and Heart of Glittering

I’ve always loved driving through Glittering Lights with my family, so the chance to talk with the person who helps bring all that magic to life felt pretty special. John Bentham, event producer, took the time to talk to me about how they give back, what inspires them, and the year-round work that keeps this beloved Las Vegas favorite shining bright for families across the valley. the event producer, There’s a lot happening behind the scenes that might surprise you

The Spark of Inspiration

“What inspired you and how does it feel to see families enjoying it?”

Lights

The idea for a drive-through light show like Glittering Lights first came to life back in 2000, inspired by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and another local family I joined the adventure in 2012, when my kids were little My Christmas spirit was sky-high, and I had a real passion for bringing something joyful to the community. I'm proud to be part of a tradition that families pass down We're now seeing three generations come through

The Nativity Scene

“The live nativity scene is one of my favorite parts How do you choose who takes part, and what makes it so special?”

As a man of faith, the Living Nativity is really close to my heart I'm always aiming to have it running as many nights as possible. My church has played a huge role in bringing it to life They volunteer in the display and help rally other churches and community members to join in, too. Whether someone connects with the story of Jesus or not, the scene itself is peaceful, beautiful, and full of camaraderie It adds this calm, grounding moment as you drive through the lights, and I love being able to share that with our guests.

Looking Ahead

“You’ve been doing Glittering Lights for many years What are your hopes for the future? Anything new you’d love to add?”

This year, we added a fun new 6–7 display that kids absolutely love, plus Elf on the Shelf characters and a Tribute to the Movies Some of our displays are also sponsor-driven, so who knows what's coming next We're always dreaming up new ideas!

Glittering Lights is all about community. We want to raise even more for Speedway Children's Charities, collect more clothing for Goodwill, boost concession sales to support local Scouting America troops, and find as many ways as possible to lift up other local nonprofits
