Presenting the First VKZ Heart of the Community Awards to community leaders and youth was the highlight of February!
It was an honor to present the Community Champion Award to Damian and Gina Costa at their social gathering spot, The Composers Room.
The longtime locals uplift local talent and create opportunities for those in need, from annual toy drives to supporting performing arts programs Their passion for preserving classic Vegas shines through their work with Clark County and Metro Police to revitalize The Historic Commercial Center District
Beyond their business, the Costas’ personal commitment to giving back is just as inspiring They have mentored youth, supported parents, and aided foster and adoptive families facing challenges As foster parents themselves, having completed three adoptions, they deeply understand the needs of this community and continue to advocate for children in the system.
Whether through outreach programs, sponsorships, or quiet acts of generosity, the Costas lead with kindness, creating a ripple effect of positivity that makes Las Vegas a better place for all.

Motherhood is a journey of profound transformation, but for young mothers facing homelessness, it can be an uphill battle filled with uncertainty, fear, and isolation. Imagine bringing life into this world while struggling to find stability, support, or even a safe place to sleep. Organizations like Living Grace Homes ensure that no young mother has to face it alone.
In 2002, Clark County had the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country, with many of these young women not only pregnant but homeless. The foster care system was already overwhelmed, and there were few resources specifically designed to help young mothers navigate both motherhood and independence.
Since 2007, Living Grace Homes has stepped in as a beacon of hope for pregnant young women aged 14-24, providing them with more than just a roof over their heads Through legal assistance, medical care, educational support, job preparation, and essential life skills, they help young mothers move from dependency to empowerment.
As a community, we have the power to uplift these young mothers. Often, all it takes is an intentional act of support whether through mentorship, donations, or simply spreading awareness.
Here are a few ways we can show up:
Many young mothers have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment, leaving them without strong role models or guidance. Mentors both women and men play a crucial role in helping them build confidence, set goals, and create stable futures. Whether it’s a conversation over coffee, teaching a new skill, or just being a consistent presence in their lives, mentorship can be life-changing.
Antoinnette Majors is the owner of Momma Mindframe, a prenatal mindset coaching practice that helps expecting mothers access their innate power and intuition so that they are empowered to create the birthing experience they desire
Motherhood requires essentials many of which are often out of reach for struggling young moms Living Grace Homes has an ongoing need for: Diapers (sizes 5, 6, 7)
Potty chairs for toddlers transitioning out of diapers
Socks for both mothers and children Gift cards to Walmart, Target, Smith’s, and Torrid allowing young mothers to purchase personal items like bras, underwear, and hygiene essentials with dignity
While gently used clothing is welcomed, providing new undergarments and personal care items restores dignity and builds confidence, an invaluable step toward independence
The challenges young mothers face are not always visible. Many of them are doing their best with limited resources, often juggling school, work, and the demands of caring for a baby alone.
By sharing their stories, advocating for policies that support them, and engaging in conversations about maternal support, we can shift the narrative from judgment to empowerment.
Stories like Morgan’s are proof that with the right support, young mothers can thrive.
Arriving at Living Grace Homes at 18, Morgan was given shelter and a pathway forward help securing Medicaid, food assistance, childcare, and educational opportunities.
Today, she lives independently, raising her son, who is excelling in school. Even more inspiring, former residents like Morgan now work at Living Grace Homes, using their lived experience to guide and empower the next generation of young mothers
Being a mindful momma isn’t just about our own journey it’s about lifting others along the way. When we support young mothers, we invest in the future of their children and our communities as a whole.
Let’s take action. Mentorship, a donation, or simply sharing this mission every effort makes a difference.

Sick of spinning? Had it with HIIT? Bored with barre? If so, it’s probably time to swap your oncetrendy workout routine for the latest fitness fad: stretching.
On the drive home from hot yoga classes, you’ve likely noticed the proliferation of stretch studios in strip shopping centers throughout the Las Vegas valley StretchLab, StretchMed and Stretch Zone among them.
Touted as “wellness training,” the one-on-one stretch sessions offered at such studios are led by instructors some called “flexologists,” “stretch therapists” and “stretch practitioners” who assist clients in performing dynamic and static stretches. Moves for the back, hamstrings, and shoulders, among others, may boost one’s range of motion, increase flexibility and athletic performance and, in some cases, alleviate aches and pains.
Dr. Adam Tenforde, an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, recently told CNN that those who spend 25-50 minutes in paid stretch sessions may not see the same health benefits as they would by participating in aerobic or high-interval training. In any case, stretch studios have exploded in popularity nationwide, with sessions ranging up to $100 or more. In this economy, that price tag may end up being the biggest stretch of all.
The talented doggies at the Henderson Police Department K9 unit are not what you might expect! The highly trained dogs, including a Belgian Malinois, Weimaraner and Cocker Spaniel, are clearly respected partners Officer Kevin Grant offered insight into the K9 world.
The K9 pups are masters at tracking human odors and hormones! So, villains beware they can most likely sniff out a person hiding or items that may have been handled by a human.
To be a K9 Officer, you first need to become a police officer Officers must do a 12-week certification course and 16 hours of continuing studies every month, along with daily training for pup and officer These dogs aren’t cheap, either, with each trained dog costing the department around $10,000!
The dogs are purchased through budget and seizure funds, but two of the dogs were given to the department by the military. The reason for the expense is because of the warranty, which means that the dogs will be able to work for them for 6 months and be healthy and work hard.
The dogs are on a schedule and look to their officer partner for direction
“Dogs are masters of association,” Grant said “We do things so many times, the dog knows what’s going on When I reach my hand into my vest, he knows I will probably pull a toy out If we pull into certain parks, he gets excited and he knows he is going to play fetch or do something exciting.”
“I don’t get nervous about the dangers of the job per se, but is this going to be OK for my dog,” Grant said “I worry more about him getting hurt on the job.”
It can be a dangerous job. Grant and his first patrol dog ran into some trouble on one of their first days on the job.
“Some people were shooting a gun,” Grant said, noting that they stopped the suspects in their car. “When the officers searched the car, they couldn’t find a gun. I sent my dog out on a 30-foot leash and within 60 feet from the car, my dog laid down in a pile of rocks I had to move my dog and tell the officer to move the rocks, and there was a little gun the size of the palm of his hand ”
The team balances work and play by having the dogs in kennels at their home.
“(The dogs) are segregated at home, in kennels,” he said “They are not in the home with us If we are roughhousing or the kids are roughhousing and [the dogs] perceive a threat, they could be triggered and bite They are trained to bite, so they have their off time, their kennels, that they go to, they sleep in (and decompress) When we start the (police) truck up, they’re jumping and ready to go. They associate work with playtime.”
The officers share this advice for those who want to train their dog.
“You’re going to get out of your dog what you put into your dog,” Grant said “Get him out and work him Put as many site pictures into his head [during training] as what you are going to see, so when he sees something it’s not new for you and the dog you’ve practiced this.”

As I stepped onto the sidewalk, I looked at the big sign, LOTUS BROADCASTING I entered the building, and took in the signed guitar picks and colorful band tour posters posted on the walls throughout the quiet lobby
We went into a room filled with classic rock band posters and technical equipment, like microphones and computers, as you would imagine in a radio studio
I waited for a moment, and then Stephanie MacKenzie, selfproclaimed "Morning Show Goddess and Raider Queen," as well as friendly, bubbly radio personality for 97.1 FM, our local classic rock station (and one of my favorites), greeted us warmly.
"I went to college to be a doctor," said MacKenzie, morning DJ for The Point, a Lotus Broadcasting station "I was in pre-med, but it just wasn't for me I explored other options, tried TV broadcasting, but I laughed too much. So, I switched to radio and, here I am, 30 years later!"
Classic rock is at the heart of 97.1 The Point, and the playlist is highly curated.
"We rely on a mix of research and audience preferences," Mackenzie explained. "Classic rock evolves. What was once considered new is now part of the genre Led Zeppelin, for example, is making a comeback thank you, Target t-shirts!"
MacKenzie, a devoted mother of two, has a favorite era but it’s the people that make it matter for her.
"I love all music, but I could listen to '80s hair bands all day. My top three? Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, and Poison," she said. "I love connecting with people, hearing their stories, and sometimes helping them through tough times Music is powerful it brings people together"
“Getting up at 5 a.m. is rough," she said. "And now, being a mom and in management, I have to keep my schedule dialed in."
Her career has led to unforgettable moments, from drumming with Tommy Lee onstage to interviewing Elton John and even hanging out with Snoop Dogg But one dream remains
"I'd love to interview Howie Long," she said of the football legend “So, if you're reading this, Howie, give me, Steph, a shout at 971!

Day camp: the perfect mix of adventure, fun, and learning all without the overnight baggage! It’s where kids can dive into new activities like sports, arts, and outdoor games while making friends and building confidence.
But it’s not all sunshine and campfires some kids might miss home a little, and the packed schedule can leave them tuckered out by the end of the day.
Still, with no need to pack a suitcase or say goodbye for too long, day camp offers a fun, action-packed escape that leaves kids with a ton of memories and maybe a little extra energy to burn!
A survey by the American Camp Association (ACA) found that 70% of parents reported their child gained selfconfidence at camp.
A whopping 96% of campers stated that camp helped them make new friends, and 93% felt they got to know kids who are different from themselves.

This year, coding camps are particularly popular, and for good reason With the rapid growth of technology, coding is becoming an essential skill From creating games to designing websites, coding teaches problem-solving, creativity, and logical thinking It also gives kids a head start in future careers as technology continues to shape the job market
Many spring break coding camps offer hands-on learning with fun projects like building apps or programming robots These interactive experiences make complex concepts easy to understand and exciting to explore. As digital natives, today’s kids find coding both relevant and enjoyable, making it the hottest camp choice this year.
Learning to code early gives kids a jump on a rapidly growing job market, opening doors to endless career possibilities in fields like game development, AI, and web design.
(Spoiler alert: It’s way more than just borrowing books!)

Who knew the library was basically a magic portal to endless fun? Kelvin Watson, Executive Director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (and a librarian who
really knows his stuff), gave us the inside scoop on all the mind-blowing things you can do at the library.
First, mark your calendars for March 2 Read Across America Day! It’s also Dr Seuss Day (cue the rhyming), and it kicks off National Reading Month, a time for kids to dive into new books and get their read on.
Here’s a fun fact: Reading just 20 minutes a day can expose a child to a whopping 1.8 million words a year,, boosting their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
During National Reading Month, kids are all about adventure and fantasy, with characters like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson leading the charge into magical worlds.
“It’s super easy to find your next favorite book, movie, music to stream, comic book, event, class, and more right on our website,” Watson said.
But here’s the thing: The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is about reading all year long.
They’ve got two popular programs during school breaks that not only keep kids’ reading and school skills sharp, but also let them win cool prizes.
The Summer Challenge runs from May 15 to July 31 just in time to keep those summer “I’m bored” complaints at bay!
Besides free access to digital movies, music, and eBooks, you can also dive into coding and STEM classes, try out 3D printing, and even tap into business resources.
Want to borrow museum passes? Check. Attend author talks? Double check. Need help with your career or want to learn a new language (or even prepare for citizenship)? They do that!
Seriously, who knew the library was this epic? Grab your library card and get ready for an adventure!
For more than two decades, Mac King has been making audiences laugh and gasp in amazement with his quirky humor, incredible sleight of hand, and signature plaid suit.
But this month, the legendary magician is unveiling something truly special a brand-new trick he’s been working on for nearly eight years!
King first began developing this illusion years ago, but never quite had the confidence to debut it until now. Unlike his usual magic routines, this is the first trick where he remains completely silent for most of the performance. Set to a live jazz track, the act features the talented Las Vegas Academy Jazz Ensemble, a group King praises as “the finest jazz ensemble anywhere.” The first big performance happens at a benefit for LVA, a school close to his heart his daughter attended LVA for visual arts, and he has supported the school for years.
Though he’s only performed the trick in his show in recent weeks, King is thrilled with how it’s coming together And it’s not just about the magic this performance is honoring Kelly Holmes, making it even more meaningful. Magic, Reading, and a Life-Changing Book.
While King continues to push the boundaries of his show, his passion for magic is rivaled only by his love of books. Long before he became a world-famous magician, he was just a curious kid searching through bookshelves for a magic book his grandfather once showed him. That moment changed his life.
“When I was a little boy, my mom’s dad had magic books in his house. I would spend my visits pouring through them, searching for that one book. That literally changed my life,” he recalls.

King has been giving back to kids for over 40 years, starting with Nevada Reading Week when he would visit at-risk elementary schools to perform magic, read stories, and share how much books meant to him. His message is simple:
"Every happy adult I know reads. Everyone I know who is smart and happy reads, really."
Now, he’s taking that passion even further.
Teaming up with Caesars Entertainment, he recently launched a massive book drive where Caesars employees visit schools and make sure every child gets a book of their own for some, the first book they’ve ever owned. The joy of seeing a child light up as they hold their very own book is pure magic.
DuringNevadaReading Week2025,Kingplansto spreadthewordaboutthe powerofreadingandget bookstokidswhoneedthem.
As part of the Vegas Kids Zone March book drive to benefit Spread the Word Nevada, there’s free books for kids in the audience during his shows March 17-21!
With new tricks, a hightech stage, and an intimate setting, King is loving his current show setup so much so that he’s re-upped his residency through 2027! The venue allows for a close-up, personal feel, which works perfectly with his storytelling style. It also has top-notch production value (thanks to some impressive upgrades left behind by previous performers).
And, of course, King’s signature humor remains in full force. He always has a joke ready while pulling a child onstage to help with a trick. His favorite?
"We’re here because it’s your 9th birthday. When you turn 9, you go to Las Vegas it’s a tradition!"
For King, magic isn’t just about tricks it’s about storytelling, laughter, and making a lasting impact. Whether he’s amazing audiences with a silent, jazz-backed illusion or handing a child their very first book, one thing is clear: He makes magic in more ways than one.

Las Vegas-based author Hope E. Davis is an emerging literary talent known for her imaginative storytelling and dedication to inspiring young readers. A passionate writer since age 13, Davis has crafted engaging books that captivate audiences with rich characters and meaningful themes
She published on fanfiction net in high school and turned one of those short stories into a published book after college
“My parents told me that writing wasn’t a `stable’ career choice, so I went to college for something else,” she said. ”I got the last laugh though, because my university job laid me off during COVID in 2020 and I went back to
writing I am now a full time ghostwriter and blog writer (when I’m not working on my books!).
Basically, if you love something there is a way to make a job out of it you might just have to be creative!”
David Bradley, author of “The Adventures of Big Head Bob” book series, has a background in hospitality. The local author writes about characters to help children manage social and emotional intelligence.
“I never set out to become a children’s book author it just happened. I’ve been drawing Bob since childhood, always amused by his giant head, small body, googly eyes, and single hair. During the pandemic, my brother had a baby, and with extra time on my hands, we developed `’he Adventures of Big Head Bob.’ It started as a way to turn my own experiences of feeling different into something positive. The publishing journey was filled with trial and error, emotions ranging from joy to frustration. I self-published my first book in February 2021, and it quickly grew into a series, expanding into a YouTube channel, activity books, music, poetry, and over 1,000 school visits.
“The idea for Bob’s story came from a yoga class where I struggled with anxiety. A ticking clock bothered me until an instructor suggested transforming weaknesses into strengths. I used the clock to time my breathing, which became the foundation for Bob. His `big head’ represents challenges we all face, like anxiety or self-doubt.
“Now, I’m working on `Bob Goes to School’ with live audience feedback and launching a college mental health series. My advice to young writers? Just start your story matters!
Inspiring kids has made her book series soar! Rella Be promotes literacy through engaging appearances.
“As a flight attendant, I spent long flights journaling and sketching on my work iPad, collecting five years’ worth of ideas Then, one day, an update wiped them all out. I was devastated but that loss sparked something in me. Determined, I immersed myself in the world of publishing, learning everything from editing to formatting and illustration The journey has been incredible, and nothing compares to seeing kids light up while reading my books I’ve always been fascinated by people’s stories. Those conversations inspired my `Shapes Series,’ where a diverse world of shapes reflects the uniqueness of our own.
Each book carries a fun, relatable message to help kids connect with the world in a fresh way
“The author community is incredibly supportive! Another surprise? Writing for kids is harder than for adults. You need to engage both children and the adults who buy books for them. It’s a challenge, but one I love
“I’m launching seven new books, each with an interactive kit, including `Do Robots Run My Elementary School?,’ an interactive school visit experience where students solve a mystery featuring their own teachers and staff.
“As a writer, there are always a million stories running through my head ideas my imagination stirred up that my mind can’t let go of Some might be intended for different audiences than others “In the middle of writing the `Paws of Love: Children’s Series,’ a collection of stories intended for a child audience, I had an idea for something more adult, more mature.
“I felt eager as I finished up `Paws of Love’ because I put `The Devil in Disguise’ on hold for so long, wanting to put all my energy into this

“Things that are found in non-fiction works, such as EMDR therapy, narcissism, and the way trauma festers with time whether you remain with the abuser or not. I wanted to help people heal.
“It had become a passion. The series I wrote for kids will always have a special place in my heart, but `The Devil in Disguise’ is my book-baby My true passion
My love for contemporary fiction began after the realization that I could teach people through fiction. Of course, my children's books teach plenty, but I wanted to bring awareness to so much more
“The transition from children’s fiction to adult contemporary fiction came quite naturally for me as I had been developing stories in that genre in my mind for so long It was a fun experience to be able to expand upon my writing abilities Despite not yet being an adult, I am so happy that I have an outlet to reach people both older than me, as well as younger and to be able to raise awareness around various forms of trauma through inspirational fiction” - Author, Angelina Agasi

As the first-time, large-scale homeschool convention in Nevada, one of the biggest challenges has been spreading awareness and ensuring families know about this valuable event. We've tackled this by building strong partnerships with local homeschool groups, co-ops, and educational institutions
Another challenge has been securing funding and sponsorships to keep ticket prices affordable while offering a high-quality experience. By working with local businesses and organizations, we've been able to create sponsorship opportunities that benefit
both attendees and community partners How

wildfires broke out in Los Angeles, Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions knew they had to help.
“We reached out to shelters and rescues to see if we could take in adoptable cats and kittens from L.A. to Las Vegas,” said Kimberly Wade, media and intake manager. “We had the space, adoptions were up, and we wanted to help.”
Homeward Bound started as a foster-based rescue in 2007, finding homes for cats through Petsmart and Petco. In 2019, they opened the Flamingo Adoption Center, a 2,400square-foot space designed to minimize stress and help cats find loving homes Since then, they’ve saved nearly 10,500 cats, including a recordbreaking start to 2025 with 104 adoptions.
Homeward Bound welcomed 12 cats from Kitten Rescue in L.A., many of whom have found homes. Another group arrived recently from Best Friends Animal Society West L.A. and other L.A. County shelters.
These cats weren’t directly affected by the fires, but were already up for adoption. By transferring them, L.A. shelters can make room for pets that needed help due to the fires.
“Our Las Vegas community always comes first, but when we can help others in need, we do,” Wade said.
The Los Angeles cats had various backgrounds. Some were found abandoned outside after their families left or moved away, some needed medical care, and some were simply born in the care of the previous organization.
“Brisa and Bella were rescued from the train tracks in South Central L.A. It was a dangerous situation, and if their rescue had not happened, they may not be in the happy situation they are today,” Wade said.
Both girls are young and beautiful and, despite their adventures, are sweet, affectionate, and fun-loving.
“Bella was adopted as soon as she arrived at Homeward Bound, but Brisa is still available.”

When my family moved to Vegas from New Orleans, we were on a mission to find good barbecue and Cajun food. We’ve tried a few places, but nothing really hit like home until we found Hattie Marie’s.
Owned by former NFL player Brandon Marshall, Hattie Marie’s brings together Texas barbecue, Cajun flavors, and soul food all in one spot. And, let me tell you, the food slaps. The brisket was smoked just right with a flavorful rub instead of sauce, the ribs were tender, and the catfish was seasoned to perfection. Even the sides like mac and cheese and greens tasted homemade. One of the coolest things: They’re always adding new dishes to the menu “We’re about to add jambalaya to the happy hour menu,” Brandon told me “And, one of my chefs came up with this sticky shrimp it’s a honey-garlic mix, and it’s really good ”
Brandon may be best known for his football career, but the skills he learned on the field have played a big role in how he runs his restaurant “Teamwork makes the dream work,” he said. “I tell my staff all the time, `No one person is bigger than the team.
“Just like in football, we have to work together.” He also isn’t afraid to get in the trenches literally. “I’ve been back there washing dishes, cooking on the line, sweeping the floors whatever it takes.”
But running a restaurant isn’t easy, especially while trying to balance life outside of work “At first, I was still coaching football while opening this place,” he admitted “It was tough, and honestly, it still is ” Brandon shared that he is managing the restaurant solo while looking to fill a general manager vacancy. Even with the challenges, he’s all in. “I don’t give up. That’s something I learned from football no matter how hard it gets, you keep pushing.”
A Sports Bar Vibe with Southern Flavor Hattie Marie’s isn’t just about the food it’s got a sports bar vibe with TVs everywhere and an upstairs area for parties. “We wanted a place where people could come watch a game, eat some good food, and just have a great time,” Brandon said. That’s also why the menu has some extra “game-day” items you wouldn’t normally see at a Texas barbecue spot “We’ve got wings, nachos, and brisket fries because people want those fun bar foods, too ”
If you’re looking for real-deal Southern food in Vegas, this is the spot. Trust me, it’s the closest to home we’ve found yet. And, with a former NFL linebacker running the show, you know it’s built for big flavor and big wins.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL FRENCH FRIES!
For the Popsicle Base
8 oz dairy-free cream cheese, softened
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup dairy-free whipping cream
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Coating
12 oz dairy-free chocolate chips
⅓ cup refined coconut oil
Instructions
For the Popsicle Base
Put cream cheese in a bowl and whip with a hand mixer until it is creamy
Add the peanut butter and vanilla extract and beat with a hand mixer until thoroughly combined
Add the powdered sugar a little at a time (in about 4 additions), mixing completely with the hand mixer after each addition.
Pour in the whipping cream and whip until the whole mixture is light and fluffy.
Put the mixture into a piping bag (or zip-top bag) and squeeze into popsicle molds. Cover, insert sticks, and freeze for 18-24 hours. After that time, remove from molds, put the popsicles on a parchment-lined pan, and return them to freezer until you are ready to coat them.
For the Coating
Put chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl Microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring after each burst
Remove only a few popsicles from the freezer Dip them in the chocolate coating and place them on a second parchment-lined pan Repeat this process until all of the popsicles are coated Return to the freezer for at least half an hour

1 1/2 pounds of ground meat (beef, turkey or chicken)
3-4 slices of bacon
½ sweet onion, diced
1 cup cheese
1-2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp all-purpose seasoning
½ tsp chili powder
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp paprika
¼ tsp onion powder
¼ tsp kosher salt
¼ tsp white pepper
3 tbsp ketchup, optional
3 tbsp BBQ sauce, optional
Heat a skillet over medium-high, once hot, add the bacon. Cook bacon on both sides for about 3 mins (or until desired crispiness). Remove bacon and let drain on paper towel. Add diced onion and garlic to the bacon grease. Sautee until onions are translucent (about 3-4 mins), constantly stirring so the garlic doesn’t burn. Remove from the pan and set to the side. Add in the ground meat and cook until browned. Drain meat if needed and return to the skillet.
Add in the onions and garlic, plus all of the dry seasonings. Stir to incorporate. Remove from heat and add in ketchup and BBQ sauce (if desired) at this point. Chop up the bacon and shred the cheese Transfer meat mixture to a bowl, clean the frying pan, fill halfway with vegetable oil and preheat it on medium
To make the eggrolls:
Place meat filling diagonally on the wrap. Add cheese and bacon crumbles. Fold the bottom corner over the filling. Roll tight halfway to cover the filling and fold in both sides snuggly against the filling Use water to moisten the edges of the flap
Roll the wrapper up, seal the top corner and lay flat side down until ready to cook Once the eggrolls are all rolled, the oil should be hot enough Fry on each side for 2-3 mins As soon as the edges are golden, flip them over Drain on paper towels For the full recipe, go here

On March 2, JoJami Tyler of Fancy Pants Gardens will host a 90-minute experience at Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum where art and botany intertwine!
Tips to Create an Oasis at Home
If you've tried gardening in the desert before and failed, Tyler has some pointers
“I beg that you give yourself another chance,” she said “It's just a matter of getting the right mix of sun, soil, and plant choices. Once you have dialed it in, you should see some success and then you will be thrilled with the abundance of yummy greens you can grow and harvest.“
Easy crops in March? Vegetables.
“Cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers all love the heat and will reward you with plenty of fresh produce,” she said Plant cucumber seeds directly into the garden But, “You are better off buying tomatoes and peppers at a nursery for a faster start on the growing season ”
Fast-growing basil, chives, sage, parsley, rosemary, mint, thyme, and oregano grow well in containers or raised beds good for beginners.
“Toss in some marigolds and zinnias to keep your garden buzzing with bees and butterflies,” she said.
For a thriving garden, these are a must:
1 Sun – Most veggies and herbs need at least six or more hours of direct sunlight But with our scorching summers, a little afternoon shade can keep them from getting fried Please don't stick your raised bed on the side of the house if it is shady plants need light to grow!
2. Soil – To give your plants the best shot, build better soil. A great mix for raised beds or containers includes topsoil, compost, and sand, topped with a layer of worm castings Many local nurseries sell pre-mixed blends, but you'll still want to add extra compost or worm castings to keep your soil rich and thriving
3 The Right Plants – Choosing tough, heat-loving varieties makes the difference between a lush garden and a crispy one. It's also key to plant in the right season some plants love the heat, while others prefer cooler weather. For example, tomatoes hate the cold, but lettuce thrives in it!
It’s colorful and charming and crazy good! Anime Las Vegas returns to The Expo at World Market Center March 29-30 (get your tix here). We spoke to the marketing director Colin Bass about how they create this unforgettable experience, featuring a diverse lineup of celebrity guests, engaging panels, and interactive activities.
“Well, this convention wouldn't happen without the amazing anime community in Las Vegas We're so grateful to our local attendees that help us grow our event and have made us the largest anime convention in Nevada We've also been fortunate to team up with local Las Vegas businesses like Anime Gear Guru, Manga Hole, Downtown Cinemas, Millennium Fandom Bar and more And we're also grateful to local vendors and artists that are part of the show”
Are there any exciting new features or guests planned for the next event?
“This is our biggest event so far! Over 60 guests 350 vendors We have huge cast panels, cosplay contests, free arcade zone, karaoke lounge and so much more Some celebrities of note that are coming this year are: Maile Flanagan (“Naruto”), Dante Basco (Prince Zuko from “Avatar: The Last Airbender”), Eric Vale (Trunks from “Dragon Ball Z”), Jim Cummings (Winnie the Pooh/Tigger), Kaiji Tang (Gojo from “Jujutsu Kaisen”) and so many more!”
What's been the most surprising or memorable moment at Anime Las Vegas so far?
“We were nervous to create the event in Las Vegas. We've seen similar events come and go. It's a hard market! But one of the best moments was seeing the amount of attendees come in our first year and see them embrace the event. Nothing beats seeing people have fun.”
Can you share any behind-thescenes stories from past events?
“Oh, man, these things go by so fast it's hard to take mental notes of the behind-thescenes moments. But, one moment that sticks out is when we switched from having side panels to creating the Anime Activity Zone. It was so
much fun discussing ideas with our program director, Tyler McPhail. We have so many games, activities and screenings that lead to a lot of fun times and even more free stuff. It's one of my favorite parts of our con.”
do you see Anime Las Vegas evolving in the future?
“Well, we definitely have the space! So I'm just imagining more people with more fun things to do at the convention. The Expo at The World Market Center is beautiful and allows us to spread our wings and continue to grow!”
