Making sure the point wasn’t missed, a guest speaker delivered a gut-wrenching personal account of the importance of everyone taking responsibility and doing their part. The half-day events were held near Ranger’s West Palm Beach and Winter Garden offices on back-to-back days, using expo and conference halls large enough to accommodate the company’s hundreds of employees, who also received safety gift bags, raffled prizes and catered lunches.

Ranger Crew Participates In NAPA Safety Video It was “Lights, Camera, Asphalt!” on a Ranger Construction paving job in Miami-Dade County recently. The company participated in a video production sponsored by the National Asphalt Pavement Association to promote roadway safety. An asphalt crew led by Foreman Jose Treminio was filmed while paving US-27, with an actor performing the close-ups and reaction shots.

A Ranger crew led by Foreman John Parker is doing site work for a new hotel in Dania, FL. After clearing the trees, unsuitable foundation soil was replaced with aggregate materials.

Camera ready: A Ranger crew did more than just pave a section of US-27 in Miami-Dade County recently. The job was the scene of a video production sponsored by NAPA to promote roadway safety. In the cab is an actor brought in for close-ups and reaction shots.

Safety Handbook Provides Pocket-Sized Reference Tool To help employees “do the right thing” and stay safe, Ranger Construction has prepared, published and distributed to workers a pocket-sized, well-organized guide covering the proper safety procedures for a wide range of workplace situations.

Mike Scarborough Becomes Safety Certified

Mike Scarborough, one of Ranger’s Safety Directors, has earned his Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals, a credential sponsored by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association’s Foundation.

In a humorous but pointed demonstration, later revealed to have a serious real-life backstory, two Ranger employees try their hand at a simple, everyday task while simulating being “disabled” from a hypothetical workplace accident.

You know a topic is serious when a company shuts down its entire operations to talk about it. Ranger Construction recently held a mandatory “Safety Stand Down” for each of its two Florida divisions. Presentations included reminders on workplace harassment policy and social media guidelines, but the primary message of the day was clear: Ranger is serious about developing and maintaining a zero-accident culture.

FDOT allowed a schedule adjustment to cover the mandated emergency shutdown period, but Ranger has more than made up the down time and now anticipates finishing the project several months ahead of schedule.

Maybe there isn’t a “good” time for a hurricane to blow through a road construction project, but in a fortuitous case of timing, Ranger’s US-27/FL-25 widening project west of Orlando was at an optimal point in the schedule when Hurricane Irma paid a call in September, causing only a short delay and allowing the company to continue toward its goal of an early finish in 2018. The six-mile, $37.5-million project involves substantial excavation and grading work to transform an aging four-lane road into a six-lane thoroughfare, but very little exposed earth was actually threatened by Irma’s powerful wind and rains. The company had already built one side of the new roadway, including the asphalt, but hadn’t yet removed the old asphalt from the other

Widening Progresses On US-221, US-321 In Western NC

As Vecellio & Grogan finishes the northern section of a US-321 widening project in Blowing Rock, NC (right), and pushes toward completion of the job’s southern end, the company is also clearing land for four miles of US-221 widening in Ashe County (above). Both projects are near the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwestern part of the state.

Vecellio & Grogan On Fast Track To Complete I-26 Project In NC Right out of the gate, Vecellio & Grogan was a natural fit for a high-priority I-26 improvement project near Columbus, NC. With its reputation for tackling tough projects and accommodating tight schedules, V&G’s low bid of $19 million was readily accepted as part of a fast-track strategy to have US-74 interchange upgrades substantially completed before the World Equestrian Games are held nearby in September 2018. V&G’s work involves widening and repaving along the existing I-26/US-74 interchange alignment, but also constructing a more efficient connector road between the two major highways.

To accommodate this, two small bridges will be built. Stream relocation and several mechanically stabilized earth walls are also included. Finishing a major project less than a year after receiving the contract will require V&G to work multiple shifts and coordinate overlapping construction activities, all while keeping a close eye on the finish line. The company is already setting a good pace. Expected to draw an estimated 500,000 horse lovers, the games will be held over several weeks at Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring.

DAVID MULLENS • 40 YEARS WELDER / MECHANIC VECELLIO & GROGAN*

David Mullens joined Vecellio & Grogan’s team in 1977, fresh out of high school and after a year of Vo-Tech training. He began as a welder in the shop, which later become known as Beckley Equipment Repair. David’s proficiency with handling complex assignments has only improved over time, earning him his most recent promotion to Welder/Mechanic in 2017. David is meticulous and precise, and his skill set is broad. Whether it is line-boring, fabricating tools or rebuilding equipment components, he excels. He is known as someone who can “build anything.” When given a blueprint, David can be trusted to produce accurate and top-notch work. His skill and dependability make him an integral part of the shop team.

CHARLES CARBET • 30 YEARS DUMP TRUCK DRIVER RANGER CONSTRUCTION

Charles Carbet has been contributing to the success of Ranger Construction’s south Florida operations since 1987. He has been consistently recognized by his supervisors as a hardworking, loyal and dependable employee who will do whatever it takes to get the job done right. As a skilled Dump Truck Driver, Charles works safely and efficiently while displaying a high level of professionalism, consistently observing all traffic laws and regulations. His positive attitude, excellent work ethic and commitment to safety set a good example for his co-workers.

GERALD DILORENZO • 30 YEARS SHOP / FLEET & ASSET MANAGER VECELLIO & GROGAN*

Gerald “Jerry” DiLorenzo came to Vecellio & Grogan in 1987 as a Tractor Trailer Driver and Mechanic, hauling equipment to and from projects in West Virginia and surrounding states. In 1994, he became Assistant Foreman of the shop, which in later years became known as Beckley Equipment Repair. He also helped at White Rock Quarries in south Florida, spending part of a year managing a temporary crew. With his knowledge of equipment repair, safety focus and managerial skills, Jerry was promoted to Shop Foreman in 2006, and to Fleet & Asset Manager in 2011, a position he continues to hold. Throughout, he has kept up with advancements in equipment technology to ensure efficient equipment management operation. He also organizes and coordinates the maintenance of various properties in West Virginia. Jerry is known as a “jack-of-all-trades” who leads by example with his dependable attitude and excellent work ethic.

JOHNNY GREEN, SR. • 30 YEARS ASPHALT SUPERINTENDENT RANGER CONSTRUCTION

Johnny Green, Sr., began his career with Ranger as an Asphalt Screed Operator. His knowledge, dedication and strong work ethic led to his promotion to Foreman. Over the years, he became known as a “master of asphalt.” Johnny was recently promoted to Asphalt Superintendent and continues to play a key role in Ranger’s paving operations. As a leader, Johnny plans ahead, anticipates situations and knows how to resolve issues. He spends time and effort helping his crew improve and upgrade their skills. He manages an efficient crew and leads his team in producing high-quality results. He has contributed to a variety of paving projects, both large and small, in south and central Florida.

ROBERT COMBS • 20 YEARS LEAD PERSON IN CHARGE VECENERGY

Robert Combs was hired in 1997 by Cliff Berry Inc., now operating as South Florida Petroleum Services as part of Vecenergy, the Vecellio Group’s energy division. Robert’s many years of experience and knowledge of dock operations earned him the role of Lead Person In Charge. In his leadership role, he has trained many new employees on dock operations. He is dependable, works to a high standard, and stays on top of maintenance and repair issues. Robert has done an excellent job leading his team and enforcing security at the Port waterfront. He takes very seriously his responsibility for the safe transfer of petroleum products from the vessels to the terminals and other storage units. He is well respected by his co-workers and customers.

DAVID DELP • 20 YEARS SURVEY MANAGER / PARTY CHIEF VECELLIO & GROGAN

David Delp came to Vecellio & Grogan in June of 1997 with a good combination of education and experience. Starting as a Survey Crew Chief, he soon earned the role of Project Engineer on multiple large highway & bridge projects, first with the “Smart Road” project in Blacksburg, VA, followed by a Rt. 288 project outside of Richmond, VA. David also spent time working as an Estimator before earning a promotion to Surveying Manager, the position he maintains today. David now oversees V&G’s surveying work on all projects. He is responsible for managing the Company’s fleet of GPS Machine Control Equipment. He also oversees droneaerial mapping work, as he is an FAA Licensed Remote Vehicle (drone) Pilot. David’s work ethic and attention to detail have made him an instrumental part of the team. * and affiliated companies

MARITZA GONZALEZ • 20 YEARS LOWBOY TRUCK DRIVER RANGER CONSTRUCTION

Maritza Gonzalez was originally hired in 1997 by a Miami-based road contractor that after a series of ownership changes involving APAC and Old Castle, eventually became part of Ranger Construction’s operations in 2007. Over the years, Maritza has done her job well, transporting heavy equipment to and from various construction projects throughout south Florida in a timely and safe manner. Maritza is responsible, sets a good example for others and is a valued member of the Ranger team.

HECTOR HERNANDEZ • 20 YEARS ASPHALT FOREMAN RANGER CONSTRUCTION

Hector Hernandez began his career in asphalt as a Laborer for American Asphalt, which was acquired by the Vecellio-owned PAVEX Corporation, itself later merged into Ranger Construction. Over several years Hector learned to operate a wide range of equipment. Hector left the company in 2002 to pursue other endeavors, but returned in 2005. He rejoined as a Screed Operator, then was promoted to Asphalt Lead. Hector continued to gain knowledge and develop leadership skills, which, combined with his strong work ethic, led to his promotion to Asphalt Foreman. Hector continues to demonstrate his knowledge and ability and is a valuable member of the team, respected by peers and Ranger management alike.

ROBERT MCCRAY • 20 YEARS ASPHALT PLANT LOADER OPERATOR RANGER CONSTRUCTION

Robert McCray began his career as a RAP Crusher/Loader Operator with Ranger Construction. He also worked at White Rock Quarries for a time before transferring back to Ranger. As a Loader Operator at Ranger’s West Palm Beach, FL, asphalt plant, Robert keeps the plant’s cold feed bins properly loaded with sand and aggregates. He helps keep the plant’s inventory neat and assists with maintenance. He is punctual and can always be counted on to help when needed. Robert is known for doing whatever is asked of him correctly and promptly, and his work ethic and loyalty to the organization are greatly appreciated.

ALBA PADILLA • 20 YEARS ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE MANAGER WHITE ROCK QUARRIES

Alba Padilla joined the White Rock Quarries management team in 1997, bringing significant prior credit management experience to the position. She quickly learned the intricacies of credit checks and transactions within the quarry industry. She also began strengthening the customer service relationships that make doing business with White Rock so simple and “worry free,” providing a clear understanding of our payment process and terms. As Accounts Receivable Manager, Alba provides prompt and courteous service. She works with management, the sales team and customers to ensure that terms of sales agreements are clearly understood.

SHEILA PLYLER • 20 YEARS CONTRACTS MANAGER SHARPE BROS. / V&G

Sheila Plyler was hired by Vecellio & Grogan in 1997 as a Field Office Manager helping complete a gold mine reclamation project. Her knowledge and skill-set grew as she aided on various other projects in North Carolina and Virginia. When V&G acquired Sharpe Bros. in 2006, Sheila transferred to the new division’s offices in Greensboro, NC, becoming Contracts Manager. Sheila’s upbeat attitude, helpful disposition and diligent work ethic have made her well-liked and respected around the office. She semi-retired in January 2017, but has continued to work part-time as an Accounting Clerk.

ANDREW REDLEY • 20 YEARS ASPHALT LEAD / SCREED OPERATOR RANGER CONSTRUCTION

Andrew Redley began as a Laborer in 1997 for PAVEX Corporation, a Vecellio company that later became part of Ranger Construction. His ability to learn quickly led to him operating heavy equipment. Over the years, Andrew has performed various roles and operated various machinery, eventually earning his current position as an Asphalt Lead. Andrew is a versatile, skilled, important member of the asphalt crew, and he continues to develop and demonstrate his leadership ability. He has contributed to the successful completion of a wide variety of paving projects in south Florida.

WILLIAM SETTLE • 20 YEARS NETWORK ARCHITECT VECELLIO MANAGEMENT SERVICES

William “Bill” Settle was hired by Vecellio & Grogan in 1997 as a Network Administrator in the Information Technology Department, supporting the Group’s businesses in the south Florida area. His efforts and performance allowed him to progress to a Network Architect position in 1999. In 2004, the IT Department became centralized as part of Vecellio Management Services, the corporate team of the Vecellio Group. Over the years, Bill has shown a broad range of technical knowledge and experience, working on numerous projects to help improve the business processes of the Group and its operations. Staying current on the latest technologies, he has been especially instrumental when infrastructure upgrades have been rolled out.

FRANCISCO TORRES • 20 YEARS BACKHOE OPERATOR VECELLIO & GROGAN

Starting his career with Vecellio & Grogan in 1997, Francisco “Alfonso” Torres quickly proved his value to the team, working as a Grade Checker on a huge Greenville-Spartanburg Airport expansion. Alfonso’s abilities were evident, as he demonstrated proficiency operating dozers, haul road graders and excavators. In 2002, Alfonso was promoted to Backhoe Operator, where he continues to excel. His equipment operating skills and work ethic have earned him the respect of his peers and management alike. He is known for his safe and steady approach to assignments, and understands the construction industry’s need to “go where the work is,” making him an important contributor on projects in multiple states.

Grady Brown came to Ranger Construction in 2004 with years of experience. He worked as an Asphalt Roller Operator. Affectionately known as Shady Grady to his fellow crew members, family and friends, he retired in November 2017, and has since passed. He was a respected worker and will be missed.

Michael Hilderbrandt was hired by Ranger Construction in 1994. Friendly, dependable and dedicated, he worked as a Low Boy and

Dump Truck Driver, becoming Lead Driver in 2006. He retired from the company in 2014 after 20 years of service. He passed away in 2017 and will be missed.

BLAZE ZEHNDER, JR.

Blaze Zehnder, a Sales Loader Operator at White Rock Quarries for over 19 years, passed away in 2017. He was a safe and efficient worker known for his easy-going nature. He knew and had friendships with many of the commercial truck drivers who came to White Rock for material. He was well liked and will be missed.

Luis Delgado began his paving career in 1981 with a Miami company that, after a series of ownership changes involving APAC and Oldcastle, became part of Ranger Construction in 2007. By the time Luis became part of Ranger’s team, he had worked his way up to Asphalt Superinte Miami location until his retirement, after 36 years, in 2017. Luis was the very definition of dedication and hard work, making him a very valuable member of the team.

DON HENRY, SHOP FOREMAN, RANGER

Don Henry began his career with Ranger Construction in West Palm Beach as a Field Mechanic in 1986. Even as Don showed his expertise as a Mechanic, he also developed leadership skills and, after transferring to Ranger’s operations in Orlando, was promoted to Shop Foreman in 2000. Don’s skill was complemented by a strong work ethic. He helped ensure Ranger’s consistent production in a safe working environment. He also shared his expertise with less experienced Mechanics looking for guidance and training. Don celebrated 30 years of service in 2016, before retiring at the end of 2017.
