Safety Leads To 85 Years Of Success
The Vecellio Group is celebrating its 85th year in business in 2023. This accomplishment is due to the hard work and dedication of our employees. And Safety is a critical factor of our longevity and success.
Ranger Crews Work To Improve Traffic Flow in Central Florida
Ranger Construction’s Central Division is working with the Central Florida Expressway Authority to remove two bridges on FL-528, and reconstruct the roadway with embankment, limerock, and asphalt. The current work is the construction of the median cross-over to divert traffic for the demolition of the bridge. This requires excavation and embankment (below) followed by roadway base and asphalt.
A Word From Leo A. Vecellio, Jr. Vecellio Group, Inc. Chairman, CEO & President
A safe work environment and safe work habits are extremely important to make sure every employee gets home without incident each day. It also creates the safest possible situation for the communities we work in.
Working safely has other benefits as well. It ensures the proper processes are followed and the job is done right the first time. We know safety drives quality. And quality drives production. In a competitive environment like ours, safety is key to staying ahead of the competition, creating high customer satisfaction and controlling costs. It’s that safetyfirst mentality that will continue to keep us competitive throughout our diverse markets.
I‘m proud to congratulate our Supervisor Safety Award winners for 2022. Their commitment to always doing the right thing will help us maintain business continuity for many years to come. On behalf of the entire family, thank you, and stay safe.

Sharpe Bros. Continues Concrete Road Replacement in North Carolina
As part of a concrete street replacement project in Winston-Salem, NC, Sharpe crews remove the old existing concrete roadways, prepare to install new water lines (photos at left) and install new curb and gutter, stone. When that work is complete, crews will begin asphalt paving (below) to improve overall road quality throughout the city.

Vecellio & Grogan workers set girders on a new bridge (photo at right) as part of the bypass project in Rockingham County, NC.
Stay-in-place forms were later installed by subcontractors so V&G crews could set cross frames and overhangs in preparation for installation of the deck steel. That phase of the construction, along with pouring the bridge deck, took place later in July.
V&G Works Through The Night On Highway Overpass To Reduce Traffic Disruption
Vecellio & Grogan crew removes false work, or temporary bridge forms, from below a FL-417 overpass in Orlando, before performing closure pours and stripping all overhang jacks. Eugene Bufkin (inset photo below) removes framing along with Servando Izeta working above. In the bottom photo, Mauro Yepez-Torres (Foreman) and Richard Lawrence (Superintendent) clear the false work and load it on a flatbed truck to be hauled away for disposal.
Ranger Construction Leads Efforts On Wetlands Restoration Project in So. FL
Working closely with Ranger Mechanical Services and Vecellio & Grogan, Ranger Construction advances their project plan on a complex wetlands restoration project in Hendry County, Florida. Details include the construction of five restoration areas, a seepage canal water management system, seepage canal pump station, large canal culvert crossings, inland restoration water control systems, and farm bed land leveling.
Work continues on the G-765S pump station where large boulders have been placed at the entrance to the pump bays for erosion control when the new pumps are operational.
A riprap system, including filter fabric and bedding stone, will provide additional runoff control for the pump station.

& AWARENESS!
The Vecellio Companies again participated in National Work Zone Awareness Week which took place April 17-21, 2023. The National Asphalt Pavement Association’s 2023 campaign - Watch For Us - educated the public on the dangers of distracted driving in work zones. These photos, taken at multiple job sites, show just some of our employees and teams supporting this year’s events.
Be Prepared to Beat the Heat
All employees need to be familiar with common heat-related illnesses, their symptoms, and how to treat them.
Heat Cramps, Heat Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke are the most common illnesses caused by overexposure to the sun and exceedingly high temperatures..
Working outside during extreme heat requires planned breaks and drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
For information about key heatrelated illness, symptoms, and first aid treatments, go to www.cdc.gov
The Safety organization recently updated all of the companies’ Employee Safety Handbooks for 2023.
All employees should receive a copy of your specific handbook and become familiar with the important information included.
You can never be too safe on the job to ensure you and your coworkers go home without incident at the end of each day. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Hal Jones Readies Docks for Historic US Navy Ship
The USS Orleck is a Navy Destroyer Commissioned in 1945 and named after Lt. Joseph Orleck, killed in action during WWII and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
The Orleck served during the Vietnam War, as well as the Korean War, and received nearly 20 battle stars during that time.
When the Navy decided to permanently dock the ship in Jacksonville, FL
as a Naval Museum, Hal Jones was hired to reinforce an existing shipyard pier to receive it.
Hal Jones installed six 18” pipe piles to support three floating fender panels for initial ship dockage. Then, eight mooring bitts (large cleats) were installed on the pier for the ship’s lines, and an elevated gangway platform was constructed with access ramps for public use to board the ship, now in service as a museum.
IN MEMORIAM
The Vecellio Group extends deepest sympathies to the family, friends and coworkers of those we lost during the first part of this year. They will be missed.
Melissa Stanley-Bartusiak
Melissa Stanley began her Vecellio career in January 2006 as an Accounts Receivable clerk out of the Beckley office. With her hard work and dedication, she took on many roles and ultimately became the Accounting Manager for Vecenergy.
In June, Melissa and her husband Sam, were killed in a tragic motorcycle accident while riding in West Virginia, something they loved to do. Her work families in Beckley, West Palm Beach, Port Everglades, and throughout Vecenergy will miss her deeply and will never forget her kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Melissa’s family and friends.
Kory Kirwin
Kory M. Kirwin passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 31. While Kory was not with V&G for that long, he had an immediate impact as a Laborer on V&G’s largest project, the Rockingham Bypass. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Our hearts go out to Kory’s family, especially his twelve-year-old daughter, Rylie.
RETIREMENTS
The Vecellio Group extends best wishes to those who retired in the first half of 2023. Their many years of valued service are greatly appreciated!
James R. Absher
James Absher came to V&G in July 2021 after a long and fulfilling career in road construction. The company was fortunate enough to have James with us for the past two years as a Bulldozer Operator to share his knowledge and experience. We congratulate him on his retirement.
Alba R. Essenburg
Alba Essenburg (formerly Alba Padilla) began her career with White Rock Quarries in December 1997. She brought a wealth of credit management experience to the business, and grew invaluable relationships with both the sales team and customers to ensure all business terms were understood. Alba’s dedication and work ethic will be missed by all at WRQ.
Rodney L. Golden
In July 2006, Rodney Golden began working as a Shop Mechanic for Sharpe Bros. His skills allowed him to work on all types of equipment to
make sure all machines performed safely in the field. All his coworkers wish him the best in his retirement.
Alfred L. Lacy
Alfred Lacy performed many duties during his time at Vecellio & Grogan. He was hired as a Laborer in 1985, and later promoted to Mechanic’s Helper.
Alfred was always willing to perform any task that needed to be done, and always did it well. He never met a stranger...just people he hadn’t become friends with. That is something his coworkers will miss most about him.
Arturo Pelaez
Originally hired in 1988, Arturo Pelaez took a break from service but returned to White Rock Quarries in 2016 as an Off-Highway Rear Dump Truck Driver. Arturo was a hard worker and will be missed by all as he begins his retirement.
Frederick E. Rumph
Fred Rumph worked for South Florida Petroleum Services for more than ten years, retiring as Person-In-Charge at the end of March. Fred’s work
ethic and commitment to quality and safety will be missed by all.
Michael N. Scarborough
Mike Scarborough brought a blend of southern charm, humor, and sometimes surliness to his safety training. Mike genuinely cared for his fellow employees, and did what it took to keep them working safely.
He was a mentor, counselor, confidante and, when required, a thorn in the side of those he worked with. His dedication was unmatched, and he will truly be missed. As college football season begins, you will find Mike watching to see if his UGA Bulldogs will “three-peat” as National Champions.
Gary I. Todd, Jr.
Tad Todd was a retired Captain in the U.S. Coast Guard before joining Vecenergy. As General Manager of South Florida Petroleum Services (SFPS), he ran the business with professionalism and integrity for more than fifteen years.
Tad retired from SFPS in March after a smooth transition that ensured consistent business focus and direction. His personality and commitment to his team will be missed by all as he sails on to a peaceful retirement.

Vecellio & Grogan employees in Tampa, FL joined approximately 800 other individuals for the Third Annual Great Port Clean-Up on April 21st.
The effort covered 32 sites across Tampa Bay, and V&G was one of 29 private groups participating in this year’s event.
Nearly 80,000 lbs. of trash was collected by volunteers this year, almost double the amount of trash collected in 2022.
Approximately 2,000 43-gal. trash bags were collected, along with 30,000 lbs.of invasive weeds.
What were some of the stranger items removed from the Bay? They included a giant plastic tank, multiple semi-truck wheels, and an entire boat that had been sunk in the past.
Mike Chmara, Joe Marricco, and Sonny Greene (shown in the photo below) were three of this year’s participants from V&G.
