As we begin our 86th year at the Vecellio Group, I want to focus on what are two of the most important elements of our business…safety and culture. Safety is a critical factor in the longevity and success of Vecellio Group and its businesses. It encompasses every aspect of our work from facilities to equipment, to projects, and to our employees. Culture ties in with safety in that we strive to do the right thing and look out for our coworkers, and the public overall, during every project.

A safe work environment and safe work habits are extremely important to make sure every employee gets home without incident each day. It also creates the safest possible situation for the communities we work in. Our culture dictates that if we see an unsafe act or condition, we speak up to make sure the problem is addressed immediately.

Safety and culture go hand-in-hand. Remember: if you see something unsafe or being done incorrectly - say something. It’s the right thing to do.

Past Ranger Leadership Attends Annual Safety Event To Recognize Employee Accomplishments For 2023 Ranger Construction held a safety awards luncheon in January to recognize those who continue to honor the traditions established by the company’s past leaders.

At this year’s event, some of Ranger’s past leaders joined current leadership to help celebrate Ranger’s 2023 accomplishments. Those in attendance included (photo from left to right) Gerald Cooper, a Project Superintendent and retiree with 50 years of service; Christopher Vecellio, COO & Sr. VP, Vecellio Group, Inc.; Mike Slade, past President who retired after 43 years of service; Steven Brown, a retired Operations Manager after 20 years; Miguel Correa, past VP with 41 years of service; and Bob Schafer, President, Ranger Construction.

These asphalt projects were recognized

by ACAF because they exemplify the highest quality asphalt pavements. The projects enhance safety, improve durability, and create value for project owners and the traveling public throughout Florida.

Vecenergy Honors “Heroes Of The Day” In The First Half Of 2024 In the photo below left, David Iglesias, Safety Director at Vecenergy, presents the awards to Gene and Stevie for “staying cool under fire” and responding quickly to prevent further spread in the facility.

Below right, Paul Crissman, Director of Operations, presents Kenneth Cannato, Maintenance Technician (holding the plaque), with his award.

Kenneth, along with Steven Large, Terminal Operator, not shown in the photo, noticed smoke coming from the office doors. They immediately called the fire department who quickly put out the fire, which was caused by a water cooler in a conference room. Their situational awareness and quick action saved the building from extensive damage, and fellow employees from harm.

Vecenergy’s “Hero of the Day” program was established to reward employees that have gone above and beyond their normal day-to-day responsibilities relating to the overall safety of the business.

In the first half of 2024, there were two events that led to individuals receiving this award. Both of the events involved electrical fires. The first incident took place at the Port of Palm Beach. Gene Velasquez, Terminal Operator, noticed smoke coming from the PMA Control Panel. Upon opening the panel, he saw the smoke was coming from one of the control boxes and flames quickly followed.

Assisted by Stevie Allen, also a Terminal Operator, Gene was able to quickly extinguish the minor blaze and ensure no loss of time to the business or any injury to fellow employees.

Sharpe Bros. Kicked Off The Year Completing Projects From 2023 In Winston-Salem, NC In the first quarter of the year, Sharpe Bros. continued work on projects that were begun in 2023 as weather allowed.

The Alamance Church resurfacing project was completed, and multiple other Winston-Salem projects will be completed in the second and third quarters (photos below).

In June, crews began work at Smith Reynolds Airport.

This taxiway rehabilitation project will include milling and paving Taxiway A - the main taxiway - with additional taxiways to follow. The project will require 23,800 tons of asphalt and is planned for completion in the third quarter.

White Rock Quarries Looking At Higher Deliveries In 2024

White Rock Quarries in Miami, FL has seen a significant rise in customer orders during the first half of 2024. If production continues at the current pace, White Rock may experience an increase in deliveries servicing its valued customers and sister companies working throughout the state.

Ranger Receives 2024 Best In Construction Award From FTBA The Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA) recently recognized Ranger Construction for their outstanding work in partnering for 2024.

Ranger worked with FDOT on the widening and reconstruction of SR-50, and the addition of a shareduse path for the community.

The work was performed within the Withlacoochee River Basin, an

environmentally sensitive area that has “Pristine Waters of the State” status, according to FDOT. The project also runs across the Richloam Wildlife Management Area. Protecting these environmentally sensitive areas is what helped to earn the “Partnering” award.

Ranger Construction is currently working with Palm Beach County in Florida on a project that includes widening on both Seminole-Pratt Whitney Rd. and Northlake Blvd.

The site has four ponds that need to be excavated, as well as four major pipe crossings that move water for the Indian Trails Improvement District.

There is also underground storm drainage, as well as a fair amount of water and force main that need to be installed or deflected around the proposed storm drainage structures.

The overall project covers more than two and a half miles of roadway. Seminole-Pratt Whitney Rd. will expand from a two-lane street to a divided multi-lane roadway. The project is planned for completion in summer of 2025. The photos above show current progress of the job as of June 2024.

SR-A1A in Ft. Pierce, FL Vecellio & Grogan is currently working on the construction of the new North Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway on SR-A1A in Ft. Pierce, FL. The project involves the demolition of the existing bridge (Bascule Bridge), construction of the new highlevel bridge, and the East Coast Greenway which will be a shared-use path.

SUMMER SAFETY Summer is here, and it is dangerously hot outside. That danger increases throughout the summer months for road construction workers due to the increased heat and humidity. Heat exhaustion and stroke can occur if the proper precautions aren’t adhered to when working outside. It is very important that workers stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to guard against heat illness. Crews should be aware of both the signs & symptoms, as well as the proper response when they occur.

Heat, however, is not the only weather factor faced during the summer months. June 1st marked the start of hurricane season.

“Hurricane Alley” encompasses 90% of the Vecellio Group Companies’ locations, beginning in Florida and moving up the coast to North Carolina and Virginia. Always follow company guidelines for hurricane safety when extreme weather is identified in your area.

Vecellio Group Partners With FDOT And Job Corps Miami Promoting Careers In Bridge/Road Construction

Employee Dependents Earn FL Scholarships

In April, Vecellio Group’s Human Resources organization participated in an FDOT Construction Career Event (CCE) which was hosted in partnership with Job Corps Miami.

The event was held at the Miami Job Corps campus for approximately 200 young adults between the ages of 16 and 24. The majority of the participants were selected from their construction trades courses, and showing interest in building careers in the road & bridge construction industry upon graduation.

Participants also included recent Job Corps Trade Course graduates residing in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Any participant who was eligible to begin working in 2024 was able to immediately interview with their companies of choice during the event.

The Florida Transportation Builders Association (FTBA) has announced their scholarship winners for 2024, and three of those scholarships were received by dependents of Vecellio Group, Inc. employees.

Ryleigh Butz, daughter of Cory Butz, Director of Operations - Marine for Vecellio & Grogan, will receive an FTBA scholarship that will pay $1,000 per year over four years.

Elizabeth Jacobs, daughter of Edwin Jacobs, Project Manager at Ranger Construction, also earned a scholarship from FTBA. She will receive a one-time scholarship of $1,500.

Jaden Browning, son of Doug Browning, Controller at Ranger, has been awarded scholarships from both FTBA and the Asphalt Contractors Association of Florida (ACAF).

FTBA awarded Jaden the Bob’s Barricades/Don Humphrey Memorial Scholarship worth $2,000 per year for four years.

The Florida Asphalt Scholarship Program (part of ACAF) awarded Jaden the prestigious Chair’s Scholarship for 2024 through 2027 totalling $10,000 over the four-year period.

Congratulations to Ryleigh, Elizabeth, and Jaden for recognition of their outstanding accomplishments.

Yurizan Anderson Yurizan Anderson started at White Rock Quarries in 2004. Over her 20 years in the business, she was known for her hard work, empathy, loyalty, and integrity…all extremely important traits for a Manager of Human Resources.

Yurizan’s coworkers praised her for her ability to balance being an advocate for employees while always operating in the best interest of the company. Her organizational skills and willingness to help others did not go unnoticed, and she will be greatly missed by the entire White Rock team as she begins her retirement.

Jeffrey W. Hart Jeff Hart started his career with Ranger Construction in 1996 as a welder in the mechanical shop.

During his first 12 years he worked at both the Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach plants. His fabrication and mechanical skills were an asset to not only the shops, but also the asphalt plants.

In 2008, Jeff became a full-time plant employee and played a significant role in the success of all our asphalt facilities. Jeff’s ability to troubleshoot, detect and resolve issues was invaluable to our operations, and his work was always performed with high quality.

Jeff’s positive attitude was contagious and he always kept morale at the highest level. His constant dedication and contributions to the operation of our asphalt plants will be greatly missed.

Miguel Moya

Hector Lopez Gatomo began his career with Ranger Construction in January 2006. He started as a Roller Operator for the asphalt crew before taking some time away from the business. After returning, he remained a Roller Operator only this time for the grading crew.

Hector was a dedicated worker who completed 13 years with Ranger. His expertise and work ethic will be greatly missed by everyone he worked with, and we wish wish him a very happy retirement.

Leonard A. Meyers

Leonard Meyers began his career with Murray Logan Construction in 2009. He proved to be a dedicated, honest, and reliable employee, and both customers and coworkers alike appreciated his work ethic and customer service focus.

Leonard traveled one and a half hours each way to work every day and was always on time. He supervised the rock pit operation in charge of scheduling deliveries, ensuring quality of materials, and collecting COD payments. Not to mention, he was one of the finest equipment operators in the business.

He will be missed by all of his coworkers.

Miguel Moya began his career with Ranger in 2005. His journey began as a dump truck driver.

Because of his unmatched dependability and work ethic, Miguel quickly became a lead driver.

Miguel’s coworkers remember him as a good friend and dedicated family man. He will be missed by the entire Ranger organization

Richard J. Tompkins Richard Tompkins was only with Sharpe Bros. for a few months. Although he was new to field work, Richard was a fast learner and had a great deal of pride in his work.

His can-do attitude and positive work ethic will be missed by everyone he worked with at Sharpe Bros and the Vecellio Group as a whole.

Ranger Construction recently completed the reconstruction of Taxiway B north of Runway 10L-28R, as well as modifications to Runway 14-32 at Palm Beach International Airport. Work at the airport included excavation, subgrade base placement, storm sewer installation, and new and modified electrical airfield lighting with new LED light fixtures.

Working with the Palm Beach County Department of Airports, Ranger has completed the majority of Phase 1 and all of Phase 2. The remaining portion of the $20.5 million project was completed three months ahead of the original schedule,

which was September 2024.
