Puerto Vallarta is known for warmly welcoming its new residents. Kimberly Martin (better known as Kim), a designer and founder of Myskova Beach Boutique, was welcomed by the destination twice: the first time in 1989, when she spent three years in the city serving as a timeshare agent, and the second in 2002, when she would stay permanently and open her own business.

Her introduction to fashion design was thanks to her mother, Debbie Martin, who designed and made the various swimsuits and costumes Kim used as a child for her singing and dancing presentations at the talent shows held in her native Victoria, Canada. “My mother had an amazing ability to design, cut and sew. In the beginning, she only made my tutus and tights, but over time, her creations gained quite a bit of popularity, and she began making them on a larger scale, until she founded her Debbie Martin Designs brand, which I grew up with.”

In 1994 Kim lived for a time in Mexico City, where she began her modeling career and made around 200 television commercials. In addition, she had the opportunity to participate in some national television programs, such as Qué Nochecita con Jaime Camil with the now famous actor and producer.

These circumstances motivated her to start her first swimsuit collection.

“This project arose from my work as a model, since it was very difficult to find clothes that had cuts that favored my body type and that, at the same time, were comfortable and made me feel confident. So, in 2000 I started

A Kimberly Martin (mejor conocida como Kim), quien es la diseñadora y fundadora de Myskova Beach Boutique, el destino le brindó la bienvenida dos veces: la primera en 1989, cuando permaneció tres años en la ciudad desempeñándose como agente de tiempo compartido y la segunda en 2002, cuando se quedaría de manera permanente y abriría su propio negocio.

Su acercamiento con el diseño de modas fue gracias a su madre Debbie Martin, quien diseñaba y confeccionaba los distintos trajes de baño y disfraces que Kim utilizaba cuando era niña para sus presentaciones de canto y baile en los shows de talento que se organizaban en Victoria, Canadá, su lugar de origen. “Mi madre tenía una habilidad asombrosa para el diseño, corte y confección. Al inicio, ella solo elaboraba mis tutús y leotardos, pero con el tiempo, sus creaciones ganaron bastante popularidad y empezó a confeccionar a mayor escala, hasta que fundó su marca Debbie Martin Designs, con la cual crecí”.

En 1994, Kim vivió un tiempo en la Ciudad de México, donde comenzó su carrera como modelo y realizó alrededor de 200 comerciales televisivos. Además, tuvo la oportunidad de participar en algunos programas de televisión nacional como Qué Nochecita con Jaime Camil, el ahora famoso actor y productor.

Estas situaciones le sirvieron como motivación para emprender su primera colección de trajes de baño: “Este proyecto surgió a raíz de mis trabajos como modelo, pues era muy difícil encontrar ropa que tuviera cortes que favorecieran mi tipo de

my own brand, called Ningún Pecado, which I had to leave two years later because my husband and I decided to move to Puerto Vallarta, as we both knew that the quality of life on the coast was, and continues to be, much better for raising a family. Although we arrived in the destination the same day as Hurricane Kena, as time went by I was able to continue with my swimwear project, but now with another name: Myskova Beach Boutique.”

About her boutique’s name, she shares that it is related to her marriage. “My husband’s last name is Myska, and a custom in the Czech Republic, where he is from, is that women usually change their last name when they marry, taking their husband’s, to which an ‘ova’ is added at the end. So, my name would be Kimberly Myskova.

A fun fact is that Myska means ‘mouse,’ so in the logo there are small ears that only the people from there can identify.”

“My passion is to find the perfect cut for each person, to make men and women feel more confident about their bodies through comfortable garments made of lightweight materials.

For this reason, despite having excellent salespeople, I like to be in the boutique to talk with the people who come in, resolve their concerns, listen to their suggestions and get to work on new designs that meet their

Aunque llegamos al destino el mismo día que el Huracán Kena, con el paso del tiempo pude continuar con mi proyecto de trajes de baño, pero ahora con otro nombre: Myskova Beach Boutique”.

Acerca del nombre de su boutique, comparte que está relacionado con su matrimonio: “El apellido de mi esposo es Myska y una costumbre de la República Checa, de donde es originario, es que, por lo regular, las mujeres cambian su apellido cuando se casan, tomando el de su esposo, al cual se le agrega un ‘ova’ al final. Entonces, mi nombre sería Kimberly Myskova. Un dato curioso es que Myska quiere decir ‘ratón’, por eso en el logo hay unas pequeñas orejas que solo la gente de allá logra identificar”.

Una de las grandes motivaciones de Kim es ayudar a sus clientes por medio de sus diseños.

“Mi pasión es encontrar el corte perfecto para cada tipo de persona, hacer que hombres y mujeres se sientan más seguros con sus cuerpos a través de prendas cómodas elaboradas con materiales ligeros. Por ello, a pesar de tener excelentes vendedoras, me gusta estar en la boutique para platicar con las personas que llegan, resolver sus dudas, escuchar

tastes and needs. My goal is for people to come into the store and leave even happier because of their purchase.”

Despite keeping a very busy schedule (which is divided among exercising, spending time in her boutique, spending time with her family and designing), in her spare time she enjoys outdoor activities and pampering her palate at some of the bay’s restaurants. “I love the South Shore, because I love leaving from Boca de Tomatlán and walking to beaches in Cabo Corrientes, as well as setting sail for Yelapa, Quimixto and Las Ánimas.

I also love the city, since I love walking in the Romantic Zone because of the fun atmosphere generated by the LGBT+ culture, in addition to the fact that in this area there are very good restaurants, such as Joe Jack’s Fish Shack, Salud Super Food and Margarita Grill, although I also like to visit establishments that offer more traditional food.”

“I love Vallarta • Nayarit because it is a unique place that combines beautiful beaches surrounded by lush nature that makes you feel like you’re in the jungle, besides still retaining its essence of a typical Mexican town through the culture evoked by El Centro, where you can admire the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the houses with their picturesque facades near the mountains and its emblematic Malecón. In addition, there is an atmosphere full of freedom and community, which is why I love living here,” she concludes.

A pesar de mantener una agenda muy ocupada (que se divide entre ejercitarse, pasar tiempo en su boutique, convivir con su familia y diseñar), en sus tiempos libres disfruta de realizar actividades al aire libre y consentir a su paladar en algunos restaurantes de la bahía: “Me encanta la Costa Sur, pues adoro salir desde Boca de Tomatlán y caminar hacia algunas playas de Cabo Corrientes, así como zarpar hacia Yelapa, Quimixto y Las Ánimas. También me encanta la ciudad, pues adoro pasear a lo largo de la Zona Romántica por el ambiente tan divertido que genera la cultura LGBT+, además de que, en esta área, existen muy buenos restaurantes como Joe Jack’s Fish Shack, Salud Super Food y Margarita Grill; aunque de la misma manera me gusta visitar establecimientos que ofrecen una comida más tradicional”.

“Vallarta • Nayarit me encanta porque es un lugar único que combina hermosas playas rodeadas de naturaleza selvática que te hacen sentir en la jungla, además de que aún conserva su esencia de pueblo típico mexicano a través de la cultura que evoca El Centro, donde uno puede admirar la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, las casas con sus fachadas pintorescas que se encuentran cerca de la montaña y su emblemático Malecón.

Además, se respira un ambiente lleno de libertad y comunidad, por eso amo vivir aquí”, finaliza.

DUE TO ITS CHARMING combination of beach, city and mountains, our bay has managed to convince various visitors to become permanent residents. This is the case with David Connell, who is originally from San Diego, California. Since he was a child, he surfed in beach destinations in our country, without imagining that in the future he would study law in Mexico and come to Puerto Vallarta to found Connell & Associates, his own law firm.

“As I enjoyed visiting some of the Mexican coasts with my parents since I was a child, I decided to move to this country when I was in college in San Diego, right after meeting Dennis Peyton, a Wisconsin lawyer who had studied for his career in Mexico and was involved in real estate matters. He shared his experience with me and motivated me to look for universities here. Thus, I moved to Mexico City in 1992 to begin earning my law degree at the Universidad Tecnológica de México, which I completed in 1995.”

Este es el caso de David Connell, quien es originario de San Diego, California y desde niño surfeaba en algunos destinos de playa de nuestro país, sin imaginar que en un futuro realizaría sus estudios de derecho en México y llegaría a Puerto Vallarta para fundar Connell & Associates, su propio despacho legal.

“Como desde pequeño disfrutaba mucho visitar algunas costas mexicanas en compañía de mis padres, decidí mudarme a este país cuando estudiaba la universidad en San Diego, justo después de conocer a Dennis Peyton, un abogado de Wisconsin que había estudiado su carrera en México y se dedicaba a cuestiones inmobiliarias. Él me compartió su experiencia y me motivó a buscar universidades aquí. De esta manera, me mudé a la Ciudad de

While still a student, Connell began working as an intern at the Martínez del Campo del Río law firm, where he remained until 1996. He then worked with Carlos del Río, one of the firm’s partners, who was chief justice of Mexico’s Supreme Court from 1970 to 1971 and from 1983 to 1984.

“When I lived in Mexico City, I really liked going surfing in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. On one of my trips, I met a surfer who wanted to buy land in a nearby town. This was in 1996, when the Agrarian Reform began and many people needed advice on the deeds to ejido (communal) land. This encouraged me to open my own office in that beach destination.”

A little later, Connell was reunited with Peyton in Zihuatanejo and worked with him until 1998, the same year he began to come to Vallarta • Nayarit intermittently.

After 11 years, in 2009, he made the decision to settle permanently in our bay.

Cuando aún era estudiante, Connell comenzó a trabajar como pasante en el despacho Martínez del Campo del Río, donde permaneció hasta 1996. Enseguida trabajó con Carlos del Río, uno de los socios de esa firma, quien fue ministro presidente de la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación en los períodos de 1970 a 1971 y 1983 a 1984.

“Cuando vivía en la Ciudad de México, me gustaba mucho ir a surfear a Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. En uno de mis viajes, conocí a un surfista que quería comprar un terreno en un pueblo cercano.

Esto fue en 1996, cuando comenzaba la Reforma Agraria y muchas personas necesitaban asesoría en la escrituración de los terrenos ejidales. Esto me alentó a abrir mi propia oficina en ese destino de playa”.

Connell intenta dividir su tiempo entre familia, trabajo y recreación, pues su rutina cambia todos los días.

“Al tener una gran carga de trabajo, hay días que llegamos temprano y tenemos que salir tarde. Sin embargo, hay ocasiones que podemos irnos un poco antes para regresar a casa y disfrutar del resto de la tarde. Además, este destino te brinda atractivos que puedes aprovechar como ir a la playa, a la montaña o al río y ver cascadas. Aquí puedes tener un sano equilibrio entre alma, cuerpo y mente”.

Connell mencionó que, a pesar de tener sus restaurantes favoritos como 8 Tostadas Estadio, él y su familia disfrutan de explorar nuevas propuestas culinarias.

“When I arrived in Puerto Vallarta, I was impressed by the professionalism of the people I worked with. I also noticed that the destination had a lot of potential because of its evident growth, and that, without a doubt, was a sign of prosperity.”

Beyond the professional sphere, our destination’s attributes seduced Connell.

“I am a person who needs to be close to the sea, mainly the Pacific coast, because I love to surf, and I have found areas that offer excellent waves here. In addition, Banderas Bay is ideal for raising a family, as it has high-quality schools and good infrastructure.

The beauty of the North and South Shore is very appealing, and all of this together made me realize that Vallarta • Nayarit is the place I wanted to be.”

Connell tries to divide his time among family, work and recreation, since his routine changes every day.

“Having a heavy workload, there are days we arrive early and have to stay late. However, there are times when we can leave a little earlier to return home and enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

“Soy una persona que necesita estar cerca del mar y principalmente de las costas del Pacífico, pues me encanta surfear y aquí he encontrado zonas que ofrecen olas excelentes. Además, la Bahía de Banderas es ideal para formar una familia, pues cuenta con escuelas de calidad y una buena infraestructura. La belleza de la Costa Norte y Sur es muy atractiva y todo eso en conjunto me hizo darme cuenta de que Vallarta • Nayarit es el lugar donde quería estar”.

Connell mentioned that, despite having his favorite restaurants such as 8 Tostadas Estadio, he and his family enjoy exploring new culinary options.

“I love that Vallarta • Nayarit has so much variety in cuisine and there are publications such as Vallarta Lifestyles that serve as an extraordinary guide to finding new places to visit. Other favorite activities are going by sea to the South Shore, mainly to Yelapa, as well as going surfing at Playa La Lancha in Punta de Mita and walking on the beaches of Nuevo Vallarta.”

Connell noted that our bay has given him the opportunity to grow professionally and personally, so he gets involved in the community through foundations and non-profit projects to propose improvements in the various areas of the city, as well as to foster respect and actions that are beneficial to this destination and its residents.

“It is necessary that we implement measures intended for the common good of all our destination, because those of us who live in the bay are people who wish to remain here for 20 or 50 more years,” he concludes.

“Me encanta que Vallarta • Nayarit tenga mucha variedad de gastronomías y existan publicaciones como Vallarta Lifestyles que sirven como una extraordinaria guía para encontrar nuevos lugares para visitar. Otras de mis actividades favoritas son viajar por mar hacia la Costa Sur, principalmente a Yelapa, así como ir a surfear a Playa La Lancha en Punta de Mita y caminar por las playas de Nuevo Vallarta”.

Connell expresó que nuestra bahía le ha brindado la posibilidad de crecer de manera profesional y personal, por ello se involucra en la comunidad a través de fundaciones y proyectos sin fines de lucro para proponer mejoras en las diversas zonas de la ciudad, así como fomentar el respeto y acciones que sean benéficas para este destino y sus residentes.

“Es necesario que implementemos medidas que sean pensadas en el bienestar común de todo el destino, pues quienes vivimos en la bahía somos personas que deseamos continuar aquí durante 20 o 50 años más”, concluye.

This walk fascinates with its pavement mosaic representing the local myth of man’s creation, as well as its spectacular collection of bronze sculptures created by renowned artists and the Anfiteatro Aquiles Serdán, popularly known as Los Arcos, where a wide variety of outdoor events are held.

Right across from this site is the Plaza de Armas, a meeting place that takes on a traditional festival atmosphere during the day and at night becomes a lively social scene. Every Sunday evening, the municipal band offers a concert for passersby, many of

TOUR OF ISLA DEL RÍO CUALE RECORRIDO POR LA ISLA DEL RÍO CUALE By / Por Estefanía Montes One of the most iconic places in Puerto Vallarta is Isla del Río Cuale, a charming island bordered by the flow of fresh water and a green blanket of tropical vegetation with lush native trees that serve as a home for birds, reptiles and small mammals.

Uno de los lugares más icónicos de Puerto Vallarta es la Isla del Río Cuale, un encantador lugar bordeado por un caudal de agua dulce y un manto verde de vegetación tropical con frondosos árboles endémicos que sirven de hogar para aves, reptiles y pequeños mamíferos.

Historical data reveal that this island was formed in 1926 after a hurricane caused the Río Cuale to overflow. The river is born in the mountains of a picturesque town called El Cuale and flows into the beginning of Playa Los Muertos, where, to date, it continues its course and serves as a halfway point between El Centro and the Romantic Zone.

Urban Hiking: Malecón to the Mirador de La Cruz This route of about 40 minutes begins at the seahorse sculpture El Caballito.

From there, you walk to Abasolo Street and, heading toward the hill, advance to Emilio Carranza Street, to take Abasolo again until you come to some concrete stairs.

As you ascend, you will see an impressive 360º view that includes the sea and the rustic roofs and streets of Puerto Vallarta, as well as the imposing mountains.

Although this hike of about 60 minutes is demanding, at the top you can appreciate a 360º view that includes the beauty of the northern part of Banderas Bay, the majesty of the peninsula where Punta Mita is located, the Marietas Islands, Sayulita and some other beaches.

To whet your appetite, one of the highlights of the menu is the Pork Belly Taquitos. The pork belly is baked in the oven for several hours to give it a tender texture and then marinated with a secret Hawaiian recipe. This presentation of three tacos is served on corn tortillas and topped with a tender octopus tentacle, as well as radishes and sprouts. It is accompanied by a habanero chile salsa with smoked pineapple. Without a doubt, this is the first opportunity to appreciate the diversity of flavors you will find in this restaurant.

La pancita de cerdo se prepara en el horno durante varias horas para que adquiera una suave textura y luego se marina con una receta hawaiana secreta. One of Pal’Mar Seafood & Grill Garage’s most distinctive recipes is the Nona Nona, a delicious Italian pasta that can be enjoyed as a main course. To learn more about its meticulous artisan preparation and main ingredients, we approached executive chef Nico Cornejo, who kindly gave us a more detailed explanation.

“Commonly known as gnocchis, the difference from traditional pastas is the preparation based on sweet potatoes, which are cooked in water until a dough is obtained that is mixed with different flours and rolled into small strips. Then, one by one, they are shaped into a ball with the help of a fork and cooked in boiling water.”

“Once they are ready, the gnocchis are placed in a deep pewter dish and bathed in a special butter prepared with lemon and mezcal, which gives the pasta an exquisite flavor. To give them the fishy touch, they are sautéed with crab, and Parmesan cheese is added, as well as a leaf of basil or rosemary.

They are served with a Sicilian lemon for the diner to squeeze and contribute to highlighting each of the dish’s flavors.”

Due to the meticulous preparation this specialty requires, it is offered only on weekends.

To accompany these exquisite culinary specialties, a delicious Soursop Caipirinha is recommended. It is prepared with the natural pulp of this fruit,

Para conocer más a detalle su minucioso proceso de elaboración artesanal e ingredientes principales, nos acercamos a Nico Cornejo, chef ejecutivo del lugar, quien amablemente nos brindó una explicación más detallada: “Conocida comúnmente como gnocchis, la diferencia con las pastas tradicionales es su elaboración a base de camote dulce, el cual se cuece en agua hasta obtener una masa que se mezcla con distintas harinas y se extiende en pequeñas tiras. Enseguida, una a una, se les va dando la forma de bolita con la ayuda de un tenedor y se precuecen en agua hirviendo”.

As a bonus to delight the other senses, this restaurant offers live musical entertainment twice a week. While on Thursdays DJ Mau Lemus entertains with a curated selection of electronic beats, the Saturday atmosphere becomes more tropical with Brazilian Brian Macedo’s bossa nova. Both start at 9:00pm and run until closing.

Pal’Mar Seafood & Grill Garage also makes its own 100 percent organic craft beer. “For those looking to try a different flavor of this drink, we currently have two types: Morocha, which is a dark lager, and Blondie, which is a witbier. The best thing about this is that we perform social work by donating part of the sales of each one to different civic associations that have to do with the conservation and protection of the marine environment,” explains Cornejo.

To finish with a sweet taste in your mouth, a great option is the Banana Travieso dessert. It is a cold, homemade banana

Ambos comienzan a partir de las 9:00pm y se extienden hasta el cierre.

“Para quienes buscan probar un sabor diferente de esta bebida, actualmente tenemos dos tipos: la Morocha, que es una dark lager y la Blondie, que es una witbier. Lo mejor de esto, es que realizamos labor social al donar parte de las ventas de cada una a distintas asociaciones civiles que tienen que ver con la conservación y protección del medio ambiente marino”, explica Cornejo.

Se sirven junto con un limón real siciliano para que el comensal se lo exprima y contribuya a resaltar cada uno de los sabores de este platillo”.

Since he had been connected to Puerto Vallarta since he was a child, he soon made the decision to come here and open Pan & Qué? Then he inaugurated La Burguería PV and immediately went on a trip around the world to learn about other cuisines, including those from countries such as Brazil, Italy, Spain, Argentina and the United States. He returned to his place of origin and for four years collaborated with Grupo Sacromonte (who are behind La Vaca Argentina gourmet grills), where he gradually began to put together the Pal’Mar Seafood & Grill Garage project, whose cuisine is characterized by being casual, generous and exquisite.

Originario de Guadalajara, Nico (como lo llaman cariñosamente) comenzó su carrera en la cocina hace 16 años en un restaurante de aquella ciudad. Como desde pequeño estuvo ligado a Puerto Vallarta, pronto tomó la decisión de venir a emprender aquí y abrió Pan & Qué? Luego inauguró La Burguería PV y enseguida se fue a viajar por el mundo para aprender otras gastronomías, incluyendo las de países como Brasil, Italia, España, Argentina y Estados Unidos.
