Livingston Inn Motel • 713 N Washington St • 652-9621 FALSE: The word “hooker” was in use at least fifteen years before the American Civil War. The term could have been taken from “Corlear’s Hook,” an infamous section of New York was, indeed, a den of iniquity. “Hooker” could also be carried over from the British slang word for thief. Prostitutes have always supplemented their income by stealing from their clients. The most obvious source of the word could be much more mundane. Prostitutes “hook” or snare their clients.

Even though “Fighting Joe” Hooker probably did not give rise to the term “hooker,” Civil War authority Bruce Catton says that the term became popularized during the Civil War, probably because of the word’s similarity to General Hooker’s name. Indeed, Washington’s red light district just south of Constitution Avenue became known as “Hooker’s Division” because of the General’s extracurricular activities.

lizard boy in tiger stadium mary schellhammer

Lizard boy was sighted having a clandestine meeting with none other than President Barak Obama Tuesday night at Tiger Stadium. The two were overheard discussing plans to “eliminate” Martin Wood. Further research indicates that Martin Wood is better known as the Geico gecko. Lizard boy asserted that Wood had an affair with lizard boy’s wife, resulting in his son. Obama added that Wood is currently under investigation for accepting payoffs from other major insurance providers. The two were seen leaving with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a retired soviet MiG-29.

In this incredibly rare photo, a muse staffer caught Dr. Joe Taylor without his beard. Rumor is that Taylor shaves his beard each evening and grows it back in time for school each day.

by the numbers: youtube devistation strange but true On April 1, Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim - the creators of the widely known video streaming website YouTube. com - attended court in San Diego, CA. Alleged crimes included: conspiracy to commit racketeering, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, and criminal copyright infringement. Although no official word has been disclosed on whether the founders are guilty, the government has requested the disbandment and closure of the renowned video-networking device beginning at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on April 15. Several outraged civilians have taken to the streets with signs in protest. Some of these signs read, “Give us YouTube, or give us death,” “YouTube or YouLose,” or even “Look, don’t touch.” Earlier in the year, a similar site, MegaVideo.com, came to a close for similar reasons. SOPA, Stop Online Piracy Act, delved into the lives of everyday American’s when its case was sent into the courts. Though the act has lessened its roll, several sites were taken down from the Internet to hinder their piracy effects. “I do not believe American teens, or anyone who lives in America for that matter, can survive without YouTube,” Steve Jobs said in response to the YouTube devastation. “It’s a miracle the human race made it this far without all this extra socialization and information.” Another court date has been announced to proceed on April 9 at 3:30 p.m. Information for this article was found on AprilFools.com.

nelson’s wrestling ramble:

wrestlemania recap nelson sims

Wrestlemania 28 is officially in whatever record books pro-wrestling may keep. Here’s my match by match breakdown of the event, followed by my final anaylysis.

match 1: Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship Sheamus won the 2011 Royal Rumble, earning this title shot. I’ve found Sheamus to be pretty flat and uninteresting every since he stopped being a mean Irishman who liked to beat people up. Now that he’s a friendly Irishman who doesn’t like bullies, Sheamus has more-or-less lost my attention entirely. That obviously doesn’t matter much to the WWE, though, because he beat Daniel Bryan for the World Title in 18 seconds. Two things are funny about this ridiculously short match. The first thing is the fact that Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan for the United States Championship had been booked for Wrestlemania 27 and ultimately didn’t make the show. So this match was a unique opportunity for Sheamus and Daniel Bryan to show the WWE the error of their ways from last year and put on a great opening match. But instead, WWE gave them 18 seconds to work with. Go figure. The second thing that’s funny about the match is the fact that Daniel Bryan was getting a huge ovation from the audience right before Sheamus kicked him in the face. Despite this loss, I expect nothing but good things from Daniel Bryan in the future. Ever since he won the World Title and adopted his obnoxious persona, he’s been pure entertainment.

Match 2: Kane vs. Randy Orton This whole feud was pretty rushed but the match between these two veterans more than made up for that. Kane and Orton have always worked extremely well together but they’ve never seemed to have a meaningful match against one another. This was a short, but very well worked, match with a awesome finish. Kane’s second rope chokeslam to Orton looked brutal, and it was nice to see The Big Red Machine pick up a much deserved Wrestlemania victory.

Match 3: The Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes for the

Intercontinental Championship I am a big fan of both of these guys. I’ve loved The Big Show ever since he ran down Hulk Hogan’s motorcycle with a monster truck back in WCW, and Cody’s old penchant for wrestling with the Triforce (from Zelda lore for those of you not acquainted with the great video game series of all time) on his boots made him an instant favorite of mine upon his debut with the company. The encounters between Big Show and Cody have been highlights of all of WWE’s shows in the lead-up to this match. I was happy with the result, which saw Big Show pick up the win and the Intercontinental Title. This title win puts Big Show in a very elite club, as he’s now held the WCW Championship, the WWF/E Championship, the ECW Championship, the United States Championship (in WCW), and now the Intercontinental Championship. Big Show has also held Tag Team Championships in both WCW and WWF, as well as the WWF Hardcore Championship. In addition to being the largest athlete in sports, he’s also one of the most decorated.

Match 4: Beth Phoenix & Eve vs. Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos I apologize to muse readers who follow WWE’s Diva’s Division with the same keen interest that I follow the rest of the product with but, to be frank, if I want to watch women’s wrestling, I’ll watch women who actually know how to wrestle on Impact Wrestling. Beth Phoenix carried Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos through a horrible tag team encounter that I barely paid any attention to. Beth Phoenix lost when Kelly Kelly coached Maria Menounos on how to roll her up and pin her to bring this abomination to an end.

H. Taker came to the ring sporting an all-new entrance attire that looked a bit like Super Shredder if Super Shredder had hung out at a lot of Gothic Nightclubs. He also finally showed the WWE universe his new look when he pulled back his hood to reveal his shaven head. Baldness, as it is for me, proved to be a huge benefit for The Undertaker. He dominated HHH in the opening of the match, and then took just about everything Hunter could dish out before Tombstoning him for the victory. Shawn Michaels proved to be a factor numerous times throughout the match, at one point he seemed to be on the verge of stopping the entire encounter in order to stop Triple H from relentlessly assaulting The Undertaker with a steel chair. However, before Michaels could call for a bell, The Undertaker prevented him from doing so by choking him out with the Hell’s Gate submission. Shawn came around just in time for one of the most epic sequence of finishing moves I’ve ever seen in a wrestling match when he nailed Undertaker with the Sweet Chin Music and it was immediately followed by a Pedigree from The Game. Not even this direct assault from DeGeneration X could keep Undertaker down, though, and he’d eventually pick up the win after the second Tombstone to Triple H. Jim Ross returned to the commentary booth to call this classic, and seemed to hint that this may be the last time the WWE sees The Undertaker again. While I’m sure that he’ll be back, sooner or later, the post-match embrace between Taker, Michaels, and Triple H could not have been a more fitting final moment for The Undertaker.

Match 6: Team Johnny (Mark Henry, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger, Drew McIntyre, The Miz, and David Otunga) vs. Team Teddy (Kofi Kingston, Great Match 5: The Khali, Zach Ryder, Undertaker vs. R-Truth, Booker Triple H w/ Shawn T, and Santino Michaels as the Special Guest Referee Marrella) Wow. This was phenomenal. This was amazing. This was epic, dramatic, and had me jumping up and down and yelling at my screen. As far as atmosphere and drama go, nothing else on the show came close to this match. The Undertaker made history by going 20-0 against Triple

This twelve-man tag was another match that failed to capture too much of my interest, but it was nice to see Booker T in the ring again, and interesting that he seemed to do most of the work for his team. The Miz picked up a pinfall victory over Santino, giving John Laurianitis con-

trol over both Raw and Smackdown. John Laurianitis is quickly becoming the most entertaining bad-guy authority figure since the days of Eric Bischoff as the Raw GM, so more of Mr. Excitement on WWE television can only mean good things.

Match 7: CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho for the WWE Title As far as the best move-for-move match of the night, it goes to these two hands down, just as I knew it would. Punk and Jericho are the two best workers that the WWE has on the full-time roster, and they proved it with this back and forth match. Words don’t do it justice. This is a match worth seeing, even if it means resorting to searching for it on Youtube. Punk retained the title, but I certainly hope that the feud with Jericho will continue on.

Match 8: The Rock vs. John Cena Well I was wrong, Rock won it. This was another classic that seemed to have everyone from the audience to the announcers totally in awe. Everyone was watching this one intently. Rock and Cena went back and forth for over twenty minutes, with about half-a-dozen false finishes, and the finally, the coup de grace was delivered when Cena made an uncharacteristic mistake and opted to mock The Rock, leading to him suffering a Rock Bottom and the loss. The Rock winning makes sense, however, in light of reports that he will continue to contribute to WWE throughout the year. This greatly increases the chances of fans getting the opportunity to see Rock/Cena II at a future event, and after the match these two put on at Wrestlemania, fans will certainly be eager to pay to see them follow it up. Wrestlemania XXVIII was an extremely entertaining and engaging four-hour extravaganza. Four hours is a long time for a wrestling show to fill, but the WWE manages to pull it off each year with Wrestlemania. The show produced three must-see matches with Punk/Jericho, Triple H/Taker, and Rock/Cena. WWE is going to have a hard time following this one up, but with a Brock Lesnar return becoming the top story in wrestling on the day of Wrestlemania, it seems like they’ve got an inkling an idea about what to do next year. Here comes the pain.

Autism is a complex developmental disability disorder that typically appears in the first three years of a child’s life. It affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Defined by certain behaviors called “spectrum disorder,” it affects people differently and to different degrees. Even though there has been a lot of research into the disorder, there is no single known cause for what changes a person’s mind chemistry causing him to contract autism. In December 2009, the Centers for Disease Control released their official ADDM report stating that autism has gone from 1 in every 170 births to 1 in almost every 70 boys in the United States. Knowing the symptoms is the biggest thing a family can do to get the help needed as soon as possible for autism. The Autism Society also works to get legislation passed

presidente dies Miguel de la Madrid, former Mexican President, died on Sunday, April 01 at age 77 from complications that were the result of pulmonary emphysema. During his presidency, De la Madrid faced the difficult task of overcoming one of Mexico’s hardest economic crisis and an earthquake. In 1985, Mexico suffered an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 that killed more than 10,000 Mexicans and left De la Madrid to deal with the aftermath. He served a sixyear term from 1982-1988; during his term, he brought “market-friendly reforms.” However, he was still unable to do something about the growing unemployment rates and inflation. Before becoming president, De la Madrid obtained a Harvard education, worked as a law professor, and served as a budget minister under President Jose Lopez Portillo, who was president before him.

“April Fool’s Day” is an odd 1986 slasher film released directed by Fred Walton. The film follows seven college friends who spend a weekend vacationing at the island mansion of their friend, Muffy. For some reason, these college kids get an entire long weekend for April Fool’s Day. This makes little sense, unless these kids are attending a Clown College and are getting the weekend off to fine-tune their pranking techniques.

china takes gold During the world team table tennis championship, China’s teams took the gold, with the women beating the defending champs from Singapore, while the men’s team beat Germany. These Chinese teams became Olympic champs after they claimed the gold at Beijing four years ago. At that time, the team event had made its entrance. There has been speculation that China’s team will claim the top slot at the London Games this year. China has an overall total of 36 gold medals in both men’s and women’s since 1926. After the men beat Germany, the Dragon, the national symbol of China, roared when the women took the win over Singapore. The men’s coach Liu Guoliang saw them claim the title for sixth time in a row.

11 dead in nigeria Members of an Islamist group fought with Nigerian troops after a raid on a hideout left 11 people dead, including a soldier and police officer. The confrontation took place in the Okene district in central Nigeria. Soldiers and police sought to invade the place assumed to be a hideout for the Islamist group, Boko Harim. According to the spokesperson for the governor of that area, some of the thugs involved could have been associated with the group. Police confirmed that nine of the suspected members were killed and identified. Police are still looking for those members that got away. The troops staged the raid was because the military wished to stop explosives from being used in the building.

7 police dead in yemen Seven policemen were killed by Al-Qaeda military during an attack in southeast Yemen. Al-Qaeda terrorists in two vehicles opened fire on the checkpoint in Shibam, in the province of Hadramawt. The day before, multiple fights took place between the army and Islamist fighters that took 40 lives. Al-Qaeda gunmen riding motorcycles shot and wounded an intelligence officer in the leg. After former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, ceded power to Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, there has been a launch of attacks from Al-aeda linked rebels. Last month, 185 soldiers were murdered in an assault by Al-Qaeda radicals near Zinjibar. The United States believes that the AQAP, or Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, is the most active global terror network.

Oddly enough, this appears to be exactly what has happened. This group of college kids is nothing like any real university students that I’ve ever met. All that they seem to do for fun is play pranks on one another. Muffy, in particular, seems to be extremely fond of playing pranks. She’s converted her mansion into one

huge practical joke factory. When she’s not pulling off something clever with a whoopee cushion, she’s planting heroin paraphernalia in her classmate’s bag, all for a laugh. Unfortunately for Muffy’s friends, getting a stash of heroin planted in their bag is the least of their problems. It seems that Muffy isn’t Muffy at all. Rather, Muffy is being impersonated by her psychotic twin sister, Buffy. This is all revealed when a basement full of severed heads is discovered by one of the characters. As if things weren’t confusing enough, it turns out that Buffy wasn’t out to play deadly pranks on a bunch of college kids. Instead, the college kids, Muffy, the director, the screenwriters, the producers, and everyone else involved in the production of “April Fool’s Day” were actually out to pull a prank on the audience! As it turns out, “April Fool’s Day” isn’t a horror movie at all. All of the horrific murders previously witnessed were elaborately staged by Muffy, who is looking to use her mansion as some sort of horror-themed amusement park. Muffy explains how each gruesome death was staged, and many people who thought they were in the theater to watch a horror movie probably went straight to the manager and demanded their money back. “April Fool’s Day” isn’t a particularly memorable movie. The acting is bland, the kills are uninventive, and the whole Muffy/Buffy identity crisis was completely ridiculous. The fact that the movie more or less breaks the fourth wall and says, “Haha we got you, silly viewer!” is a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it does cause one to regard the movie as being infinitely more clever than it initially seemed. On the other hand, however, one can’t help but wonder if the original premise for the movie was so ridiculous that filmmakers decided the only way to save it was by coming out and saying that the audience had just been subjected to a 75-minute prank. The film was remade by The Butcher Brothers in a 2008 direct-to-DVD production with a much darker premise. Rather than take the whole “let’s trick the audience” route, the remake actually gives a solid story, clever use of “practical joke” style kills, and an ending that doesn’t take everything that’s happened before and flush it directly down the toilet.

police tracking cell phones

dr. richard schellhammer

On April 20 and 21, the UWA community will have a chance to hear a wonderful artist who blends the best elements of Blues with an 80s pop sensibility. The artist is Olga Munding, known simply as “Olga.” Olga will be performing at the Sucarnochee Revue on the Friday and at the Sucarnochee Folk Festival the next day. According to the Web site Jam Base, Olga was a child prodigy, writing her own songs at the age of five in her family’s home in San Francisco. Although classically trained, she soon gravitated toward the blues. Thus, in her twenties, she traveled to New Orleans and to Mississippi, the traditional heartland of Blues music. Heavily influenced by Jessie Mae Hemphill, among others, Olga began recording the Blues but with her own take. Perhaps that’s why she’s been likened to such important singers as Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin, and Sheryl Crow. With her focus on the Blues, she released three albums, “Now Is The Time,” “Kiss Your Blues Away,” and “Blues Babe.” Indeed, on her official Web site, www.laolga. com, she calls herself the “Blues Babe.” Undoubtedly, we can expect to hear selections from her latest album, “It Comes and It Goes” when she visits UWA at the end of this month. Of her latest effort, Olga says,

"The songs on this album are rooted in the truth as I know it in my life, rooted in the blues, but we changed the sound, so a broader audience can experience them-hopefully, in a positive way." One can see what she means by watching a video of her song, “Just Take Your Time,” from her latest album available on YouTube (search “Olga Just Take Your Time”). Shot in her adopted hometown of New Orleans, the video reveals why Olga has been favorably compared to Bonnie Raitt. Olga has the same throaty yet smooth voice as Raitt. As Olga easily transitions to each stanza, one can clearly hear the blues sound in her voice, but the music, especially the drums, carries the upbeat sound of ‘80s pop. And like the musicians she’s been compared to, she has a great set of pipes. Without effort, she commands a real presence with her voice. You can enjoy the laid back attitude of New Orleans (often missed by those who think New Orleans and Bourbon Street are synonymous) when she sings:

The 84th Annual Academy Awards show aired this week, showing who the best singers in country music are this year. Blake Shelton won top male vocalist. His wife, Miranda Lambert, took home the female vocalist award. The top vocal group was Lady Antebellum, followed by the top vocal duo, Thompson Square. The top new artist is Scott McCreery. The album of the year is Miranda Lambert’s “Four the Record.” “Don”t you Wanna Stay” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson is the single record of the year. The song of the year is Eli Young Band’s “Crazy Girl,” followed by the video of the year, “Red Solo Cup” by Toby Keith. Lastly, the vocal event of the year was “Don’t You Wanna Stay” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson.

"Hour by hour, day by day/ Slow 'em down honey, so things can come your way/ People are running this world around/ Oh they would only live longer if they slowed things down." Likewise, “Whatever You Want” from the same album (also on YouTube) demonstrates her (and her collaborator on the new album, Cody Dickenson’s) remarkable fusion of Blues with pop guitar riffs. Typically there are two types of bridges in this song. One is a strong guitar riff heightened by the reverb of ‘80s pop. The other bridge is more a steel-guitar sound. It’s this type of musical counterpoint that makes the fusion of these two different styles work so well together. And what holds it all together is Olga’s powerful vocal presence. It’s a real feel-good song as the chorus sings,

"Whatever you want, anything that I can do/ Whatever you need, I will be there for you/ Whatever you want, anything you want me to/ Whatever you need, I will take care of you/ Whatever you want" Taken as a whole, Olga’s songs provide a satisfying emotional appeal for the listener. According to “Mississippi Legends” magazine, Olga and Dickenson (who is also the drummer for the North Mississippi Allstars) have come up with a unique way of selling their albums. Recognizing the shift from CDs to musical downloads, the album won’t be released on CD format, but through digital download. This isn’t the unique part – listeners can buy a card with a code on it to access a Web site. After they download “It Comes and It Goes,” buyers plant the card. Yep, plant it. The card is embedded with wildflower seeds. The new-grown plants visually represent what Olga sees in her latest music and what is portrayed in her music videos – new beginnings. Her music is downloadable from iTunes.

Once considered the province of federal agents, cell phone tracking has now become a powerful and useful tool for survellence under local police officials. The practice is now a big help, not only for police departments but cell phone companies as well. Many companies charge the officials a “surveillance fee” to track the phone. This fee covers tracking a suspect’s location and tracing phone calls as well as texts and other services. The police use these traces in kidnapping cases, drug cases, and murder cases. Police training manuals describe this technique as accessing a virtual biography of our daily activities. Civil liberty activists protest the wide useage of cell phone tracking because it violates privacy. However, many departments require warrants in cases that are non-emergency.

justice for trayvon

Martin’s parents announced they will be asking the U.S. Justice department to review the Florida prosecutor’s interactions with the police department during the investigation of their son’s shooting death. As of March 19, the Justice Department had already issued an investigation of their own into the death of the teenager. However, the family wants to know if there could have been interference by State Attorney Norm Wolfinger’s office with Stanford, Fla., police detective Chris Serino. The family will be sending a formal request on Monday. The Stanford police department has come under intense scrutiny after the way they handled the investigation of Trayvon Martin’s death. Protestors have asked for the immediate firing of Police Chief Bill Lee, who stepped aside this month. The local prosecutor in Stanford has also stepped aside due to the case. Gov. Rick Scott has hired a private investigator to determine if shooter George Zimmerman should be charged in Martin’s death, in what many commentators assume was a racially motivated crime instead of an act of self defense by conscientious neighborhood watch captain.

The 2012 James Beard Awards or the “Oscars of the Food World” are just getting started this week. Since 1990, the “not for profit” James Beard Foundation, named after “the father of American cuisine,” has been honoring the outstanding names in the food and beverage industry. There is no cash for winning this award. However, a win or even a nomination could substantially increase a business’ buzz with customers. The nominations for the award were posted on Monday, March 26. There is also a category naming the best chefs from each region of the country and even naming some states, such as New York. The offical awards will be given out on May 7.

April is a busy month for the Center for the Study of the Black Belt. On Tuesday, April 3, 2012, the Center for the Study of the Black Belt (CSBB) hosted Alabama author Aileen Kilgore Henderson for a book signing. Henderson’s book, entitled “Eugene Allen Smith’s Alabama: How a Geologist Shaped a State,” has been 10 years in the making. Then, on Thursday, April 5, 2012, novelist and poet, Irene Latham, from Birmingham, Ala., will present her newest book, “Leaving Gee’s Bend,” at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway Schoolhouse. A book signing will follow the event. On Monday, April 9, 2012, the CSBB has invited another Birmingham, Ala., author, Mr. Waights Taylor, Jr., to present his newest book “Our Southern Home: Scottsboro to Montgomery to Birmingham - The Transformation of the South in the Twentieth Century.” The title was inspired by “Our Southern Home,” a weekly newspaper, which Taylor’s father edited and published in Sumter County. The book describes the experiences of Taylor’s family, as well as those of Rosa Parks and Clarence Norris during some of the most difficult times in Southern American history during the twentieth century.

their worldview. Many Christians are not able to do this and, therefore tend to look foolish or ignorant to those who question them about their belief system, causing embarrassment for the Christian. To avoid this situation, he or she should study and put more thought into what he or she believes. Apologists defend their worldview. Christian apologists such as Ravi Zacharias and William Lane Craig speak at schools or conferences and debate nonChristians about issues concerning the origin of God, God’s tolerance of evil, the validity of Scripture, and other weighty subjects. On Monday, April 9, 2012 at 7:45 in Wallace Hall Auditorium, Campus Apologetic Ministries (CAM) will begin having 30-minute lectures on topics that are important to Christian faith.

Step 1: Stir ingredients—minus vanilla and Kool-Aid—together in medium saucepan Step 2: Heat mixture until it is approximately 250 degrees F Step 3: Remove immediately and stir vanilla and Kool-Aid mix in well. Step 4: Pour mixed ingredients into banking pan and allow to cool for 15 minutes Step 5: Once cooled, begin to pull the taffy for about 10-15 minutes until the color lightens Step 6: Pull into long ropes and cut with buttered scissors

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason from the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). The word “defense” used in this passage comes from the Greek word “apologia,” which is also the source of the English word “apology.” To apologize means to give a verbal defense or a reasoned statement/argument. So then, contrary to popular belief, apologizing and saying “sorry” are two different things. Consistent and deepthinking people are able to defend their worldviews. According to 1 Peter 3:15, Christians are supposed to apologize for their faith. They are to be able to give a defense for what they believe. They are to be able to give a reasoned statement or argument for

spring break misadventures 12

muse: to ponder; to be absorbed in deep thought

I once staged a kidnapping over spring break. I’m not sure exactly where the idea came from. The police would later insist that my friends and I had simply watched too much “Jackass” on MTV but, truth be told, I never cared one iota for Johnny Knoxville or his band of idiots, so the police were badly mistaken in that assessment. I think I just dreamed it up one day while I was sitting, bored, in a Spanish class that consisted of watching a VHS tape for an hour each day. I was a senior in high school at the time. A group of my friends and I had gone to Orange Beach to enjoy our first ever “real” spring break. Sure, we’d had spring breaks before, but now we were seniors in high school. We were practically adults. We had worked hard through the trials and tribulations of high school life, and dammit, we had earned the opportunity to do nothing but goof-off in a condo for a whole week. Most of the time we spent in Orange Beach was fairly uneventful. We tried to experience life fully but being under 21 with no fake-ids can often deter from the amount of enjoyment one takes from an experience like spring break. We may not have been 21, we may not have had fake ids, we may not have even been cool enough to have asked fellow beach-goers in possession of fake ids to lend us a hand, but we had one thing that no one else in Orange Beach that

year did. We had a plan. We’d traveled South with the plan, actually. We’d talked about a few days before the trip, going over the details as if we were preparing for an espionage mission fit for a movie. It was supposed to be the most epic adventure we’d ever attempted, something that the four of us would get to experience, to remember, and to laugh about forever. The fact that no one else would ever truly appreciate what we hoped to pull off was irrelevant. We knew. We’d appreciate the intricate framework of our devious, but masterful, plan. I’ll withhold last names to protect the potential careers of my fellow conspirators; after all, the plan was my idea. The basics were rather simple. Russell would go into a store, where he’d be blatantly stalked through the aisles by Will. Russell would leave the store, trying to attract as much attention as possible to the fact that he is being pursued while making his exit. In the parking lot, Will was to abandon stalking and pursue Russell in an all out chase. At that point, Russell would be cut off by a Toyota Echo (my old pride and joy) piloted by Alex. I was set to leap from the passenger seat, join Will in beating Russell to the ground, and then stuff him in the trunk and get out of the area. See? Nothing too complicated. Of course, I couldn’t resist making the illusion a bit more theatrical. With the addition of a long, black trenchcoat, sandals, and his prescription Oakleys, Will looked like a Matrix reject enjoying a tropical vacation. Knowing that Will’s get-up was going to get him immediate attention, I asked him to make sure to pull out his cell phone and report Russell’s departure from the site by saying, “The eagle has flown,” really loudly. This was going to be perfect. This really isn’t one of those stories where I now tell my valued reader that I learned an extremely important lesson about not staging kidnappings during

spring break when things went horribly awry and the four of us barely made it back alive. That could not be further from the truth; the kidnapping went better than I could have ever planned. We chose Bruno’s as the site of our crime. Russell went into the store, followed closely by trenchcoat-wearing Will, while Alex parked my car. As Alex and I waited with eager anticipation outside, Russell insists that every person in Bruno’s seemed to have their eyes glued to the bizarre pursuit that had begun almost immediately upon Will’s entry into the grocery store. Barely managing to avoid Will in the store, Russell bought a pack of gum and headed out. Will made the call. We were ready. The image of Will, in a trenchcoat, chasing Russell down the parking lot of Bruno’s will live with me forever. It may have been the single funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Russell threw his bag of gum high in the air and the chase intensified. Then it was brought to an abrupt halt by Alex in the Echo. I leapt from the passenger seat, Will grabbed Russell from behind, and I punched him in the stomach as hard as I could. I really didn’t mean to; I just got very caught up in the moment. Alex popped the trunk, we stuffed Russell in, and then we sped out of the parking lot. While we were stuffing Russell into the trunk, a tiny old lady watching from her car began honking her horn. I made sure to wave to her, and she responded by continuing to keep her horn pressed down. As soon as we got on the road, we were forced to stop at a red light, making ourselves look like a bunch of kidnappers who were very observant of the rules of the road. As soon as we made it back to the condo, the sole friend who chose not to participate in our beautiful staging met us at the door, declaring that we’d messed up horribly and that we must leave Orange Beach now. The local channel, it seemed, had just received a breaking

www.uwa.edu/muse

news update about a kidnapping in the parking lot of a Bruno’s in Orange Beach. My car, which was described in rather intricate detail, had an all points bulletin placed on it in the states of Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. We quickly decided that leaving Orange Beach with this matter unresolved would probably be a terrible mistake. So instead, we got back in the Echo and headed back to the Bruno’s. Before we could even get out of the car, we were surrounded entirely by police officers with their guns drawn. These guys seemed awfully serious and not the least bit amused once we were on the ground, out of the car, and explaining that the entire event was just a prank. Thanks largely to the fact that everyone but me was under the age of 18, we were pretty much told what a bunch of reckless troublemakers we were and were asked to leave the peaceful town of Orange Beach immediately. We had one more matter to tend to before we left Bruno’s for the last time that day. With the police gone, Russell, Alex, Will, and I all marched directly into the Bruno’s and demanded that they, at the very least, let us view the security tape that featured our intricately planned kidnapping in vivid detail. We were told that not only must we leave Bruno’s but that we must never again return unless we desired to be arrested for trespassing. I’ve never had the privilege of getting to see actual video footage of the kidnapping. I know that such footage exists, somewhere, and until I find it, I’ll have to hope that my memory doesn’t fail me any time soon. I didn’t learn anything valuable. I certainly didn’t advance my character or further my maturity on any level, but I got to stage a kidnapping, get on TV, be surrounded by gun-toting officers, and get away with the whole thing scot-free. What more can one ask for from a spring break?

another misadventure liz stainton

During spring break, we all want everything to happen without a hitch, but sometimes, life just does not work that way. Sometimes, things have to go a little bad to make everything else seem so much better. This spring break Darrell Truelove took his girlfriend to Panama City Beach with him to stay in a cabin on the beach and enjoy the sun. Once they checked into the cabin, Darrell’s girlfriend started unpacking everything they would need right away. She had the whole room ready to stay in; she even had the bed made. Everything in the cabin seemed perfect, until they tried to swing the door shut. The cabin door was hinged to the doorframe with old fashion wooden dowels that the campsite would change every so often. Their cabin door obviously had not been changed in a while because when Darrell went to shut the door, the hinges broke, and the door almost fell on him. He had to go up to the office and explain what happened to the manager so they could fix it. The campsite moved Darrell and his girlfriend into a different cabin, which meant everything she had unpacked had to be picked up and moved. But after they moved, the trip went smoothly. She had everything unpacked in seconds this time. I guess practice makes perfect.

gabbie's random thought gabrielle manuel

Yesterday, I read a Chinese proverb that stated “Failure is the mother of success.” This proverb caused me to realize that success is not defined by qualitative measures or by notoriety. Success is what a person makes out of the chips life deals out. Success will never be attained without some form of failure somewhere in the process. Failure is simply another chance to try again until the perfect solution, plan, or idea is achieved. Never let one failure thwart the process of achieving one’s goals and aspirations; continue to try again and again. Many times, people are afraid of failing and will not put their all in to a task, or they may not even try at all, not realizing that they will never achieve victory over their fears if they never try. As Pablo Picasso stated, “Action is the foundational key to all success.” We are all inspired by famous success stories of people like Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, and Michael Jordan. They all faced obstacles and chose to rise and overcome the failures in their careers and went on to become superstars respected worldwide. Sometimes, failure indicates one is headed in the right direction.

Sgt. Milfred Shane Williams graduated from Temple Christian School in Valley, Ala., in 1992. Williams then went on to attend The University of West Alabama. While at Livingston University, as it was called then, Williams was a member of Pi Kappa Phi and Tau Kappa Epsilon. During the Summer of 1994, Williams had the unique opportunity to become involved in the “Journey of Home,” a grueling 62-day bike ride from San Francisco, Calif., to Washington, District of Columbia. The “Journey of Hope” endeavored to raise awareness about people with disabilities and to improve relations between disabled and able bodied individuals. Williams was part of the PUSH America team founded by Pi Kappa Phi. After leaving UWA, Williams joined the U.S. Army, where he serves as an operating room technician for the USAREUR’s 160th Forward Surgical Team in Miesau, Germany. He is currently stationed in Landstuhl, Germany. In 2008, Williams participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The march is 26.2 miles through the desert to commemorate Bataan. He also participated in the medical research and material command’s noncommissioned officer of the year competition. In 2011, Williams received the USO volunteer of the year award. The award is reserved for USO volunteers “who have gone above and beyond in supporting our troops...and demonstrated their commitment to the USO’s mission,” according to the USO’s Web site. The USO chose Williams for his tireless efforts working a regular 60-hour week and then still finding the energy to volunteer at the USO Kaiserslautern’s Warrior Center, which provides care and support for wounded warriors, on Friday nights and weekends. Williams was one 16 candidates who were selected from the four operating regions of the USO each quarter.

the new club on campus dymond hannon

Alpha Omicron Omega (AOO) is an upcoming anime and manga club that will be holding an interest meeting next Tuesday, April 10. The goal of AOO is to organize the students on campus who are interested in anime, manga, video games, and art in general. However, the group will also be open to anyone interested in joining, even if they have never heard of anime. Club dues are expected to be $15, but will be discussed during the interest meeting, along with the application process and expected criteria. AOO is currently searching for a faculty sponsor. The club’s colors are sanguine black and Pokémon silver. The mascot is a bat and the flower is a black rose. The founding mothers for AOO are Jess Gonzalez of Tuscaloosa and Dymond Hannon of Cuba, Ala. AOO plans on hosting a number of activities and fundraisers, for example a maid cafe. A few ideas for potential fundraisers include selling candy and hosting a Japanese-inspired bake sale on campus. For more information about the organization or applying, contact Dymond Hannon at hannond@uwa.edu or Jess Gonzalez at gonzalezj5617@uwa.edu.

To call HBO’s “True Blood” a success would be an understatement. “True Blood” has attracted an absolutely rabid following of fans. The show offers something for nearly everyone. For fans of the horror genre, the show offers a unique perspective into the lives of various supernatural creatures, a myriad of creepy moments, and lots and lots of blood. For romance fans, the show follows waitress Sookie Stackhouse as she goes through romantic ups and downs with vampires Bill Compton and Eric Northman. For fans of steamy love scenes and gratuitous nudity, there’s plenty of both to be found on “True Blood” as well. The fourth season of “True Blood” ended on a number of cliffhangers, as per usual with the series. Eric and Bill have been marked for death by the as-yet-unseen Vampire Authority. Bar owner and shapeshifter Sam Merlotte has got a pack of werewolves on his trail. Jason Stackhouse has come, literally, face to face with his past, and Sookie’s best friend Tara Thornton has apparently just taken a direct shotgun blast to the skull. Oh yeah, and the megalomaniacal King of Mississippi, the three-thousand-year-old vampire Russell Edgington has somehow escaped his concrete tomb and will certainly be out for vengeance. Unfortunately for fans, the long awaited trailer for Season 5 has officially been released and has revealed absolutely no answers and created about ten new questions. Judging by the trailer’s voiceover, it seems as if Season 5 may explore the origins of the vampire race. This new revelation creates an endless supply of “what-if”

scenarios to keep fans guessing, while answering absolutely nothing about the fate of Tara, what Bill and Eric are up to, or what role Russell Edgington will be playing. As far as Sookie’s love-life goes, that seems to be very much up in the air as well. In the finale of Season 4, Sookie attempted to break her ties with both Bill and Eric, opting to be alone for awhile rather than the center of an increasingly heated supernatural love triangle. However, if “True Blood” has taught its audience one thing over its five year run, it’s that Sookie Stackhouse will never, ever work a regular schedule at Merlotte’s, and she’ll commit the most eye-rolling of moves for the sake of a new relationship. Despite the fact that Eric Northman tortured nearly all of her close friends, Sookie was gaga over him simply because he had lost his memory in the previous season. Interviews with the cast and a scene in the Season 4 finale have strongly indicated that Sookie may be coupling with Alcide, a Mississippian werewolf, in the next season, exposing her to an entirely new supernatural race, full of politics, conflict, and an overall hatred of pants-wearing. The most intriguing thing about the upcoming season, for this particular fan, is the impending return of Russell Edgington. Dennis O’Hare’s portrayal of the oldest living vampire in Season 3 was complete and utter brilliance. Edgington’s charisma, penchant for long-winded rants, and treatment of unfortunate newscasters were easily some of the show’s absolute best moments. The fifth season of “True Blood” will premiere in June on HBO.

is a civil war general responsible for the word “hooker”? alan brown

General “Fighting Joe” Hooker was commander of the Army of the Potomac in 1863. When General Hooker was not on the battlefield, he was cavorting with the ladies. He was said to collect prostitutes as his army passed through towns and cities and take them to his headquarters. Charles Francis Adams, Jr. the grandson of John Quincy Adams, described Hooker’s headquarters as a combination barroom and brothel. General Hooker’s fondness for “camp followers” became so well-known that they were referred to as “Hooker’s girls.” Down through the years, General Hooker’s last name became another word for prostitutes.

strange news . . . alan brown

On March 18, 2012, the residents of Clintonville, Wis., were awakened at 2:00 a.m. by a loud booming sound. The noise was so loud that even the earth shook. A woman named Leslie Berg said that the vibrations were so strong that they shook her out of her bed. She was one of thirty people who made 911 calls to the police. People came out of their houses, still dressed in their pajamas, and talked about the boom. The booming noises continued for the next week. The police and the utility company investigated the blast-like sound but found nothing. Reports of the strange, sonic boom-like noises attracted reporters from as far away as Japan. On March 21, City Administrator Lisa Kuss told a crowd of 250 people in the high school auditorium that earthquakes had been ruled out as the cause of the booms. However, on March 22, the U.S. Geological Survey announced that the booming shakes

were most likely caused by a swarm of “microquakes.” The readings from portable detectors positioned near Clintonville at the time confirmed the USGS’s theory. Geophysicist Rafael Abrue said that microquakes have occurred in other parts of the country and that they usually last only for a few days.

Every time a person accesses the Internet, potentially sensitive, private data is collected by companies without permission. This information is often sold and resold to companies to exploit this information. Just over two weeks ago, I began testing a Firefox browser extension to prevent the tracking of my surfing activities called Do Not Track Plus from Abine.com. This freemium blocking software has already blocked 4,728 social networks, ad networks and data collection companies from aggregating information about me on my office computer. Impressive. The DNT+ browser tool is currently available for Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, and, of course, Firefox. The set up is automatic, and if you prefer to allow some sites to track you, you can customize access, but why bother. Do you really need to view ads designed to separate you from your money? Best of all, by using DMT+, you can maintain your online privacy, load many commonly visited websites up to four times faster, and block pop-up ads.

After media giant AOL acquired the “Huffington Post” in a $315 million deal, bloggers filed a class-action lawsuit claiming that the Web site profited from their work and, therefore, they deserve to be paid. A New York federal judge dismissed the suit, in part because the bloggers initially wrote and submitted work without expectation payment.

yard sale dreams

If you’re looking for a bargain on slightly out-of-date technology, such as computers, printers, or routers, check out area flea markets, consignment shops, and yard sales. April is the perfect month for spring cleaning, and people love to get rid of what last Christmas giftgiving has replaced. You can buy year or two old technology for as little as 20 cents on the dollar, a perfect price point for starving college students. Remember: sympathetic sellers often discount wares in support of higher education—and a good story.

. . . fl ro alan brown A young man was sitting alone at a fancy restaurant, sipping a glass of wine, when he noticed a beautiful brunette, sitting by herself at the table across from his. The man was fighting the urge to stare at the woman, taking periodic stabs at his salad with his fork, but his eyes kept drifting back to her lovely face. Suddenly, the woman sneezed, and an object sailed through the air in the man’s direction. The man grabbed it out of the air; it was a glass eye. Grateful for the opportunity to speak to the woman, he walked over to her table and

handed her the glass eye. She bent her head and placed the eye back in its socket. Then she said, “Thank you so much! The least I can do is buy you dinner.” The man moved over the woman’s table. For the next two hours, they dined on filet mignon, drank a bottle of chardonnay, and talked about their lives. During the lull in the conversation, the woman stared at the man and told him that she was falling in love with him. “Why did you choose me?” the man asked. “Because you caught my eye,” the woman replied.
