Possibly false Even though Roosevelt has been a life-long smoker, his doctor insisted that he had been a picture of health—except for the polio, of course—until the day he died. In 1970, Roosevelt’s doctor admitted that the president had been suffering from high blood pressure, probably brought on by his heavy smoking, for many years. However, in a book titled “FDR’s Deadly Secret” (2012), authors Eric Feltman and Steven Lomazow contend that the government covered up the real reason for Roosevelt’s death in 1945. Drawing from a 1979 medical paper written by Dr. Harry Goldsmith and from a 1995 publication by FDR’s cousin, Daisy Suckley, the authors argue that a dark spot over his left eyebrow grew through the 1930s and was actually a highly malignant form of skin cancer that spreads to the brain. Therefor metastatic cancer, not heart disease, may have killed the President of the United States.

including headache and cold medicine. Any other items are extras so choose wisely when you are packing additional items including hair products, perfumes, hairdryers, and make-up. helpful hint: Livingston has a Dollar General and a Fred’s, but many students are relying on these stores for essential items like toilet paper and shower curtains. When you arrive the stock my be slim pickings or completely sold out so it is best to come prepared for the first day.

Just a few generations ago, when students went off to college they rarely packed more than one trunk or two to three suitcase. Now, most of us can not fit everything we think we need for the first week in a compact car. This guide to packing your bags for college should help you pack less and have more space in your dorm once you unpack. What to pack: 1.) Clothes Clothes are obviously the most essential item to pack for college, however, most students over pack on this item. If you are going to be able to visit home again before the cold weather sets in and storing clothes at home is an option, there is no need to bring all the clothes you own. A complete wardrobe that won’t fill up the tiny wardrobe housing has supplied you with would consist of the following for any man or woman: • 14 interchangeable outfits • 7 pajama/loungewear options • 1 swim suit • 1 dressy outfit • 1 sweater or jacket (for the cold classrooms) • 1 pair each of sneakers, dress shoes, and sandals • Socks and underwear are the only items you can never have enough of. Not over packing clothes is the easiest rule to break, but keep in mind, for all the extra clothes you bring that will be less other items you can bring when space is an issue. helpful hint: Rather than fold your clothes, roll them in tight cylindrical shapes. This still avoids wrinkles, but also takes up much less space in your suitcase. 2.) Toiletries The list of supplies you will need to bring varies greatly by what amenities your dorm has provided. If you have a private bath or semi-private bath, expect to provide your own toilet paper and shower curtain and curtain rings. You may want to contact your future roommate to determine who is getting the shower curtain and also to discuss what colors will match. If you will not be leaving your toiletries in the bathroom a small plastic basket is a great way to carry all of your washing essentials to and from the bathroom. These are the items all men and women need in their toiletries no matter which dorm they are staying in: • toothbrush and toothpaste • razors and shaving cream • soap • towel and wash cloth, sponge, or luffa • shampoo and conditioner • deodorant • lotion • bandaids and medicines you regularly take

3.) School supplies If you are going to buy your textbooks at the Bookstore, all of your school supplies should fit in your backpack. You will need the following supplies: • backpack • box of pencils • box of pens • box of markers or pencils (you still need these occasionally) • set of dividers • 2 binders • 4 packs of loose leaf paper Most of the other school supplies you will need can be purchased at the Bookstore including blue books and Scantrons. Some teachers may require more supplies, however, this list should cover the majority of your needs for one semester. helpful hint: Using two binders can help you keep your schedule straight. Get binders with clear covers and tuck the map of campus in this issue in one side and a copy of your schedule in the other. Use one binder for your Monday, Wednesday, Friday classes and the other for

your Tuesday, Thursday classes and separate each class using your dividers. 4.) Bedding and decorations At home you may have a full or a queen size mattress, but here you will have a narrow twin. For some it has been quite a while since they have slept in such a small bed and falling out in the middle of the night may be a problem. To help prevent this problem, do not bring too much bedding. The mattresses are extra-long so make sure the sheets you are bringing will accommodate these mattresses. Extra-long twin sheets are easy to find just before school starts at Wal-mart. Along with a set of sheets bring a blanket and no more than three pillows. A dorm room will not begin to feel like home until you start to decorate it. When decorating a room, it is important to remember that you have a roommate and they will have different tastes than you. Be courteous to your roommate and try to avoid images, words, and objects they may find offensive until you have a chance to find out if they are ok with these items. Contacting your roommate to help you decide what decorations to bring may help. Housing prohibits students from using nails to hang objects so be sure to bring plenty of clean release sticky hooks such as the products made by 3-M. Often the best decorations for creating that homy feeling are simply items you have had around your home your entire life such as your favorite childhood teddy bear. Don’t forget, candles are also prohibited in housing, as are hot plates so if you love your fragrances bring air sprays or plug-ins. helpful hint: The following items are strictly prohibited in university housing so you should not bring them at all: • weapons, dartboards, and fireworks • fryers, hotplates, toaster ovens, and grills • candles and incense • alcohol and drugs • pets (except fish in a 20-gallon or less tank) • wireless routers • space heaters and halogen lamps • waterbeds • large sound systems • washers and dryers • bath tub appliques

10 tips for first time freshmen

gabrielle manuel

1. Do not procrastinate! Consider school your new exciting once-in-a-lifetime job. You would not be late to your new job would you? The answer is no; a good impression on your new boss is imperative for promotions, recommendations, and keeping your job. Your teachers are your new bosses! Be prompt to your classes and create a professional relationship with your teachers. When graduation rolls around you will not have to worry about bad recommenda tions or a lack of recommendations. 2. Manage your free time. Use available down time wisely. Plan out all academic and school related activities and events ahead of time. 3. Take time to become acclimated to your new environment. You will be surrounded by people and places that are unfamiliar to you. Do not panic, just take it all in. this is the best time of your life. 4. Learn how to improvise a meal. The caf will not

usually be open on a late-night study binge. Make sure you know some quick and easy recipes that will work either on a stove top or in the microwave. 5. Make friends! One of the benefits of college is the opportunity to meet a motley collection of other freshmen. Seek some diversity when selecting friends. By doing so you open yourself up to a variety of avenues! Networking is the key to successful relationships. 6. Be prepared to move into the library. Not literally of course, but be prepared to study more. High school days are long gone and no one will force you to prepare for exams, so stay ahead and study at some point every day. 7. Pursue your passions. There are a variety of clubs, fraternities, sororities, and societies to be involved with on campus. Find one the ones that interest you and join them. Do not wait for someone else to join with you, be

what to bring to your first day of class liz stainton

Everyone remembers her first day of class in high school: the nerves, the excitement, and the questions they all asked. But now the seniors are off to college and it feels the same way. You are walking on a new campus into a new class with teachers who expect so much more. But the questions are still the same, such as “What do I bring to class my first day?” “I don’t want my teacher to think I am lazy, but I don’t want the students to think I am a butt-kisser either.” There are a few supplies every new college student should remember to bring to class. First of all, figure out how to use Blackboard. Once you know how to use Blackboard, assignments and finding course materials will be so much easier. Check your Blackboard for a syllabus. a trendsetter! If you cannot find an organization that suits your interests, start one! Most likely there are other students who share similar interests with you. 8. When preparing for living in college dorms, less is better. Dorm rooms can fill up quickly and then you will be overwhelmed by the amount of belongings you have. Also, you will probably end up shopping at some point during your time at college so leave room for additions. By the time you move out you will appreciate the fact that you did not over pack. 9. Do not make “Thirsty Thursdays” a weekly occurrence. While partying is inevitable on college campuses, there will be weeks when you are not able to attend a party. Remember that school is your first priority! 10. Have the time of your life. After stressing over midterms, finals, and 15-page papers, remember that life is still worth living. Go out with your friends and have a great time with those who support you. and decide if you can buy anything on it in advance before items sell out. Secondly, never go to the first day of class without paper and a pencil. This is college. You will most likely be writing on your first day of classes. Finally, no matter what time the class is, show up on time with a good attitude. Students never look good late on their very first day of class, and the teacher has been working up to the first day longer than you, so they don’t want everyone to walk in with a horrible attitude.

Mr. Spielberg, for the love of good movies everywhere, please direct another “Jaws” film. “Jaws” movies just go absolutely wrong without Spielberg at the helm. “Jaws 2” was alright, but it was only all right because Spielberg had a very slight involvement with the production, which included tweaks to the script. The great Jewish director was nowhere to be found when the third sequel, “Jaws: The Revenge,” rolled around, and what audiences received was comparable to living through the Rodney King riots. It’s a movie that never leaves you. The movie almost completely fails right from the get-go. It presents viewers with the premise that Chief Martin Brody, the awesome Roy Scheider, has died. I’m sure that about half the audience got up and left the theater the second they realized that Chief Brody was going to absent for a second time around, after the absolutely horrid “Jaws 3D” failed to do anything rather than cause the heads of audience members to tragically explode upon witnessing such a horrid, ridiculous, utterly brain-dead story. It seemed as if it would be utterly impossible to make a film worse than “Jaws 3D,” but somehow, Universal Studios managed to churn out a film that made “Jaws 3D” look like “The Godfather Part II” by comparison. With no Chief Brody, the movie follows the adventures of his wife, Ellen. Ellen Brody was a background character in the first two “Jaws” films. There was nothing in the previous films to indicate that Ellen was even slightly interesting; however, someone somewhere thought that a “Jaws” film centered around her would make for an exciting sequel. Keep in mind that “Jaws 3D” had gone horribly awry, and this was an attempt to use a “back-to-the-basics” type approach with the series. The audiences found themselves back on Amity Island for the first time since “Jaws 2.” Rather than revolving around complicated plot involving a mother shark avenging her beloved baby shark, the film sticks to the “one shark terrorizes an island community” approach. At least, it sticks to this approach for about fifteen minutes, and then everything goes absolutely insane. The movie begins with Sean Brody, the youngest of the Brody’s children, being forced to do his job as a police officer and serve the community of Amity. It seems that a piece of driftwood is causing some type of problem, and Shawn must get on a boat and deal with it. Amity Island is preparing for the Christmas season, so while Sean sails his boat out, the audio is intercut between the noises the boat makes underwater and the caroling of Amity’s children on the land.

It’s actually a very effective scene, particularly when the shark surfaces and eats Sean alive. His cries for help are entirely drowned out by the Christmas Carolers, and Sean is officially made into fish food in very short order. The movie then focuses on the driftwood in question and takes a dark and sinister turn when the camera zooms in close enough to reveal large teeth marks in the wood. The shark set a trap! That’s right! This time around, the shark isn’t out to do what comes naturally to it. The shark is out for revenge on the Brody family. It hasn’t gotten over the fact that Martin Brody blew up one of its relatives in 1975, so now, the entire Brody family must pay the price. That’s the plot. If that sounds silly, then it’s best to prepare because the plot gets much worse very quickly. Ellen Brody, it seems, knows all about this shark and its vendetta against her family. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Brody believes that the shark is not only responsible for killing her youngest son, but for her late husband’s death as well. When her older son, Michael, insists that his dad died of a heart attack, Mrs. Brody angrily shouts, “It was the FEAR that killed him, Michael.” If by “fear” she meant the fear of a sequel this bad, then that’s certainly a possibility. Unfortunately, Mrs. Brody means that Chief Brody was so afraid of a shark coming after his family for revenge that he died of sheer terror. Ellen Brody is in a bad place. Her husband was so afraid of

12 july 2012

www.uwa.edu/muse

the revenge

sharks that he had a heart attack and died. Her youngest son was just eaten by a shark. What will she do? If you guessed “go to the Bahamas,” then you called it. While it makes little sense that someone so touched by tragedies involving the water would have any desire to head out to any type of tropical paradise, Mrs. Brody is a unique case. She goes to the Bahamas...and the shark follows her. Yes, the movie’s shark travels from New England to the Bahamas in a period of around three days. How did the shark know Ellen was going south? How did it know when she left? Did the shark install security cameras on the Brody property in an effort to keep tabs on Ellen? Does it have a psychic connection with all members of the Brody clan? Better yet, what was the point of bringing audiences back to Amity if you’re just going to take them to the Bahamas in fifteen minutes? This shark is not playing around. While Ellen Brody meets a pilot named Hoagie, played by Michael Caine, and spends her vacation in the Bahamas trying a new romance on for size, the shark invades Ellen’s dreams, messes with her remaining son whenever he gets on the water, and ultimately attempts to dine on Ellen’s granddaughter. The shark crosses the line with this failed attack, and Ellen sets off to deal with it the only way she knows how. She gets on a boat by herself and sails around aimlessly in the ocean. Of course, the shark is able to pick out Ellen’s boat easily, despite the fact that there must

be several hundred boats sailing around the area. At this point, the movie has heavily implied that the shark and Ellen share some type of psychic connection. What isn’t explained is why the shark is after Ellen anyway. Martin Brody is dead, and Ellen never killed any sharks. All she ever did was try to get Martin to stop going out and killing sharks. With Michael Caine now in the picture, it seems like the perfect opportunity for the shark and Ellen to sit down and air all of the grievances about Chief Brody before forgetting him forever. However, animals, no matter how advanced they may be, do not, apparently, ever seek the peaceful solution. The shark pops out of the water, roars a lot, and then gets stabbed with the boat. It then blows up for absolutely no reason whatsoever. None. The shark just explodes when the boat runs into it. Apparently, this is how you deal with predators from the sea. The explosion scene is a sight to behold, however, because apparently the budget for the movie had run out entirely by this point, and so if you look closely, you can clearly see that someone put a toy boat and a toy shark in a bathtub for footage. The “Jaws” series officially hit rock bottom. It never really recovered. “Deep Blue Sea” was initially going to be another “Jaws” sequel, but after this movie, studio executives probably decided that the “Jaws” brand might be more of a detriment than a blessing to any further shark films. Even after twenty-five years, the movie has left enough of a bad taste in the mouths of “Jaws” fans worldwide that chances of ever seeing any type of follow-up are slim to none. If anything, “Jaws” will get the remake treatment eventually, but “Jaws V” seems about as likely as a shark tracking you down across the globe. In an interesting bit of trivia, “Jaws: The Revenge” was adapted into novel form to tie-in with the movie’s marketing campaign. Apparently the author was so confused by the actions of the shark in the movie’s script that he added his own subplot in order to explain them. In the novelization, it is stated concretely that the shark is controlled by a Witch Doctor. The Witch Doctor was insulted by the Brody family at some undisclosed point and is now using the shark as a means of paying them back. So there you have it. “Jaws” began as a masterpiece of man vs. beast storytelling and wound up being a silly man vs. voodoo story that would have been better left in the garbage. Zero stars. None. This is the bottom of the barrel in movies. Only watch this film if you are a card-carrying masochist.

summer movie preview nelson sims

Summer is a time for beach trips, sunburns, family barbecues, and breaking out the cape and cowl for one last crimefighting adventure. Always a big time for new releases, this summer’s lineup of new movies features some of the most anticipated titles ever. Here’s a brief look at the top movies to immerse yourself in during this season of relaxation. “The Expendables 2” - The first “Expendables” film packed so many action stars into one movie that audience members were lucky to leave the theater without broken ribs, black eyes, and concussions. For years, filmmakers feared what might happen if Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Stallone were on screen at the same time. Stallone, however, decided to find out and, in doing so, created one of the most memorable scenes from any action movie, ever. “The Expendables 2” will look to top that. Not only will Schwarzenneger and Willis play bigger roles, but Chuck Norris has joined the cast as well. “The Expendables” has, with only one sequel, officially become the action movie that enthusiasts have been awaiting for years. This is the kind of film that you have to enter at your own risk, as you may very well not make it out of the theater alive. Never before has a cast like this been assembled in an action flick. Not only do you have The Terminator, John McClane, and Rambo in the same movie-but Chuck Norris as well? Reports indicate that Norris was asked to tone down his roundhouse kicking for the film, as the tsunamis summoned by his legendary kicking abilities would have made filming on schedule completely impossible. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is also confirmed to be returning for this sequel, despite the fact that the Bionic Redneck died in a blaze of glory after his fight with Stallone in the original. How he will return is unclear, although one can only hope that he brings former WWE announcer Jim Ross with him to do the blow-by-blow commentary on his fight scenes this time around. August 17, 2012, will be a day that goes down in history when the combined forces of Norris, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Stallone, Lundgren, Li, and Statham cause every theater in America to collapse from the sheer terror of screening a bloodbath like this movie. “The Dark Knight Rises” - The finale to the Chris Nolan Batman series is finally upon us. Ever since modernizing Batman with “Batman Begins,” Nolan’s films have enjoyed the kind of praise that had previously been totally unattainable in the superhero genre. Batman will do battle with Bane while dealing with Catwoman and the weight of age and numerous injuries. The plot has been kept almost entirely under wraps. No one has any idea

how the movie will end or what will happen to Batman. Will this be The Dark Knight’s final stand against evil? Will Gotham even exist once Bane has finished with it? None of the answers are clear; however, with reports that a cut of the film received a standing ovation after a screening to Warner Brothers Executives, it seems a given that Nolan will continue to deliver with quality and emotionally gripping storylines. Just remember that if Batman dies on June 23, 2012-the movie’s release date-we riot. “Total Recall” - “Total Recall” was the best action/science fiction film ever made. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharron Stone, the story of Douglas Quaid’s faulty memory and adventures on the planet Mars captured the imaginations of everyone who has ever seen the film. The debate as to whether or not Quaid is really experiencing the action of the movie or whether he may just be enjoying a mind-vacation that he, himself, paid for has raged on literally ever since the movie’s release in 1990. Not even Arnold and director Mario Kassar can agree on the film’s true meaning. One thing that Schwarzenegger and Kassar probably do agree on, however, is the notion that remaking the film at all is totally laughable. Remaking the film with Colin Farrell in the lead role, however, is beyond laughable. It’s simply absurd. Promising to be closer to the Philip K. Dick short story that the original film was adapted from, this movie will no doubt be awful. There’s no real need in even watching it. I implore you: watch the original for a truly exciting and innovative science fiction film that features effects that were actually the results of hours and hours of hard work rather than a little bit of time in front of a computer screen playing with CGI. A remake like “Total Recall” is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the ongoing remake trend in Hollywood. It’s totally unnecessary. It will never be the classic of the genre that its predecessor was; “Terminator Salvation” should have been all of the evidence one would ever need to show that replacing Arnold is absolutely impossible. Pass on this one and watch “The Expendables 2” twice, instead. Or, if the trailers for this film look intriguing, just go watch the original. For those unfortunate souls who are determined to see this film regardless of how wrongheaded it is, the release date is August 3.

Zwan was the band formed from the rubble of the former Smashing Pumpkins in the aftermath of their 2000 breakup. Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan teamed with Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin to go forward on a musical project that both had promised longtime friend, guitarist Matt Sweeney, would commence just as soon as the whole Smashing Pumpkins thing had run its course. The Pumpkins took a bit longer than Corgan and Chamberlin initially suspected to run its course, but in 2000, the final pumpkin had seemingly been smashed after a five hour farewell show from Chicago’s legendary Metro venue. Zwan was phenomenal. From the first live shows that surfaced, it seemed that Corgan had finally joined up with musicians capable of taking his often largerthan-life ideas on grand musical journeys. Unlike The Pumpkins, who were made up of a bass player who could hardly hold her instrument properly and a rhythm guitarist who never seemed to care all that much about being in the band, Zwan made an assemblage of truly talented musicians and songwriters who had all enjoyed a great deal of success on the independent scene. David Pajo, Matt Sweeney, and Paz Lechantin joined with Corgan and Chamberlin to form a legitimate “super group.” Unfortunately, much like any other supergroup that came before them, the band imploded after just one album, and before long, Corgan was making music using The Smashing Pumpkins name again. The one album that Zwan made was “Mary Star of the Sea,” and it was phenomenal. Almost entirely panned by critics and fans upon its release, “Mary Star of the Sea” is a rock album that harkens back to the ‘70s and recalls greats such as Led Zeppelin with its old-school rock sensibilities. Songs like “Of a Broken Heart”, “Ride a Black Swan,” “Come With Me,” “El Sol,” “Endless Summer,” “Baby Let’s Rock,” and “Jesus,I/Mary Star of the Sea” easily stand as some of the best material Corgan has ever been involved with. Corgan’s obses-

sive focus on making absolutely every song he records sound like the most epic, grandiose, and larger than life recording of all time is absent on this album, making for an enjoyable, relaxing, and absolutely rocking listening experience. It’s like listening to The Smashing Pumpkins without all the sorrow, darkness, and pain that so many of their songs carry like badges of courage. Corgan’s guitar work is top-notch on this album, showing that he never truly let his talent shine in The Pumpkins. Chamberlin’s drumming has never sounded better on any Pumpkins recording, obviously because Chamberlin was holding back in order to avoid losing the other party in SP’s rhythm section, their woefully untalented bassist D’arcy Wretzsky. Lyrically, Corgan dwells less on his troubled childhood and a plethora of unhealthy romantic relationships and more on being happy and playing music. Zwan was notably much more up-beat than The Pumpkins, which left many fans of the old group very much disenfranchised with Corgan’s newest musical venture. How dare a thirty-plus year old man enjoy his job for once? Zwan never took off, and it’s a shame, because they were easily one of the most interesting bands around in 2003. Their live shows were getting attention long before they had ever released an album, and the album was so far removed from anyone’s expectations that it seemingly took a few years before fans finally began to appreciate it. Whether or not the project worked out, one thing they certainly did was record a great, solid rock and roll album during a time when performing this feat seems like a foreign concept. “Mary Star of the Sea” is a somewhat unappreciated, very much neglected gem from the Billy Corgan songbook. It’s not a recording that sounds like it may have come from outer-space, like the best of the offerings from The Smashing Pumpkins, but rather, it’s a celebration of everything that’s fun and freeing about rock music. 4.75 stars out of 5.

goodbye andy griffith nelson sims

Andy Griffith was, in many ways, the definitive American entertainment icon. Growing from humble beginnings in Mount Airy, NC, Andy Griffith's fame led to him becoming a fixture in numerous homes across the country. "The Andy Griffith Show" has remained in syndication for nearly fifty years and its enduring popularity has helped ensure that when anyone, anywhere, says the name "Andy Griffith," the streets of Mayberry, a town perpetually caught in a "simpler time," immediately flood the memory. Griffith's talents stretched far beyond his ability to play a small-town sheriff. His first taste of success came after he released his first monologue, "What it Was, Was Football," in 1953. This account of a backwoods minister attending his first football game not only mirrored the popular humor employed by Mark Twain, but it also sold enough to earn Griffith the number nine position in the charts in 1954. His film debut came with a starring role in 1957's "A Face in the Crowd." Griffith's talents were on full display in this dark tale about the rise and fall of the manipulative and power hungry drifter, Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes. Despite its lack of immediate success, critical acclaim for "A Face in the Crowd" has only served to increase as the years have gone on, largely due to the fact that Griffith's sinister acting can be better appreciated when compared to a role like the amiable Sheriff Taylor. It's almost impossible to believe that the man who helped Opie learn about life, death, and responsibility following a mishap with a slingshot and a bird's nest is the same man who spends the duration of "A Face in the Crowd" drunkenly manipulating and womanizing his way to the top. Griffith was so closely associated with Sheriff Taylor of Mayberry that his career struggled following his departure from "The Andy Griffith Show" in 1967. Despite increasingly strong performances in various role, shows such as "Headmaster" and "Adams of Eagle Lake" failed

to generate enough interest to last beyond a handful of episodes. Although his attempts to create another hit TV series were largely unsuccessful, Griffith's continued development in acting won him praise with stand-out roles in TV movies such as 1981's "Murder in Texas" and 1983's "Murder in Coweta County," where Griffith again plays a villainous role opposite Johnny Cash's portrayal of the noble sheriff who brings him down. Health complications would eventually lead to Griffith suffering from leg paralysis, forcing him to spend time away from acting to rehabilitate. After regaining his health, Griffith once again returned to television screens with the hugely successful courtroom drama, "Matlock." Griffith's portrayal of the Atlanta based defense attorney proved to be as memorable and iconic as his portrayal of Mayberry's sheriff, leading to "Matlock" running for nine years. Much like "The Andy Griffith Show," "Matlock" has never been taken out of syndication. Griffith's success wasn't limited to acting. His gospel album, "I Love to Tell the Story - 25 Timeless Hymns" received a Grammy in 1997. In 1999, he was inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame. President George W. Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005, and in 2007 he was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame and Museum. With numerous accolades in film, television, and music to his credit, Griffith will likely always be remembered by the world primarily as Sheriff Andy Taylor, not because of a lack of talent on his part, but because of what Sheriff Taylor represents to the millions who have been entertained by his exploits. He represented everything that was right, just, and true. He reminded audiences that during the most tumultuous of times, they could always find the nearest fishing hole, kick back, and enjoy themselves. Mayberry may have been plagued by the occasional backwoods rock thrower, dynamite eating goat, or cow-riding drunk, but it was, and always will be, the most ideal place to be imaginable. Just as long as you stay away from Aunt Bee's kerosene pickles, that is.

Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi/horror film, "Alien," went on to become one of the most well known, and most lucrative, film franchises of the latter part of the 20th Century. Producing three sequels and two spin-off movies, Scott literally opened a proverbial Pandora's Box when he sought to make "'Jaws' in space." In addition to introducing mainstream culture to Sigourney Weaver, "Alien" created one of the most tense scenes in cinematic history during the sequence where an alien life-form bursts through the chest of an unfortunate crew-member. Thirty-three years later, Scott is looking to repeat the entire process with the release of "Prometheus," yet another venture into the darker side of sciencefiction. While technically taking place in the same fictional universe as the "Alien" series, "Prometheus" is more of a spin-off than a sequel, focusing not on grotesque, mindless monsters with acidic blood but rather on a highly advanced, humanoid looking alien civilization that may or may not have played a central role in the creation of life on Earth. Noomi Rapace, notable for her performance in the lead role of the original "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series, turns in a memorable performance as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, the archaeologist responsible for discovering and tracking down the mysterious alien civilization. Dr. Shaw's relentless drive for knowledge powers the plot of "Prometheus," even when she is faced with the horrifying realization that her original theory on the nature of the aliens was based more on speculation than actual fact, Shaw continues to press on. Literally nothing stops this woman, not even when she is revealed to have been infected with an extraterrestrial version of a biological weapon. The removal of said infection makes for the most shockingly horrifying and uncomfortable moment in the movie. Other stand-outs in the casting include Michael Fassbender as David, the resident android of the Prometheus space shuttle. David's status as a creation of mankind provides a parallel for the relationship between humanity and the aliens that apparently created it. David spends much of the film musing on the relationship between himself and his maker, as well as working on his own agenda that is not fully revealed until the movie begins approaching its climax. Charlize Therron turns in a small, but memorable, performance as Meredith Vickers, a representative of the group funding the intergalactic exploration, and the self proclaimed final authority on the ship. "Prometheus" is a breath of fresh-air for the horror genre, relying far more on slowly building suspense and dread than an endless array of "jump scares" designed to get quick reaction out of the audience, and often to distract from the fact that the film is failing to deliver on anything that could remotely be considered "horror." While it is no modern-day version of "Alien," it is one of the most solid original horror films to have come out in some time. "Prometheus" provides an intriguing story that, thanks largely to the film's surprise ending, absolutely begs to be expanded on.

avoiding the freshmen 15 la house

The first thought of a teenager after high school is going to college. All teenagers wonder about how exciting college is going to be. A high school graduate’s main focus is to get out and being on his own. Fast food, late nights, clubbing, and house parties all beckon college newbies. However, the first thought in a teenager’s mind when heading to college should be avoiding the freshman 15. Students eat out all the time. The cafeteria may not be any better than other fast food places either because it offers the same food as local restaurants. Before one knows it, clothes will soon be fitting tighter. Shirts begin to hug one’s belly. Pant start rubbing against one’s legs. Eventually, one is going to have to go out and buy new clothes. When these problems start to occur, one has begun getting the freshman 15. Many new students wonder how they gained weight so fast. Actually, it is their entire fault. The first mistake a student makes when coming to college is eating junk food all day. On one’s way

to class, students often stop by the snack machine to grab a candy bar or chips. This daily routine will make one pick up at least a couple of pounds within a month. The second mistake a student can make is eat the same less hearty options in the cafeteria every day, like hamburgers, French fries, pizza, and hotdogs. Eating the same fried food will give one more than enough extra pounds. The last mistake a new student makes is eating and then going immediately to sleep. During school every day, students eat lunch then go to their rooms and lie down. Which is a definite NO! One’s food has no time to digest, and lying down will cause fat to build up. The only way to avoid the freshman 15 is to stay ahead of the game. New students, should watch how they eat every day, exercise at least twice a week, walk the loop regularly, and avoid eating out too frequently.

we <3 uwa housing la house

UWA housing is going to be explosive in the coming semester. There are going to be so many wonderful places to choose from, one will not know where to stay. UWA housing offers several options including: Patterson, Stickney, Hoover One, Hoover Two, Reed, and the new building Gilbert. Patterson is located beside the parking lot for the caf. Units at Patterson feature two rooms, a kitchen, and a private bathroom. Many residents make one of the rooms into a living room. Stickney is located across the street from Webb Hall. This housing option offers single, double, and a few triple occupancy rooms. These rooms also offer a kitchen and private restroom. Stickney is the only housing option with

a lobby downstairs where residents can use the computer to do homework or just watch television. Hoover Phase I is one of the UWA’s newest housing options. These dorms are located around the loop, in front of the Wesley. Four residents share an apartment in Hoover Phase I, however there are two bedrooms and full baths. Hoover Phase II is UWA’s second newest housing option. This building is similar to Hoover Phase I, however, each resident has a private bedroom. The best feature both Hoover Phases have to offer is the large living room and kitchen. The laundry facilities in Hoover allow residents to use their Tiger Cards to pay for to use the laundry machines. The only drawback to living in Hoover is that it is a longer walk class and the caf;

however, if one has a car this would be a good option. Reed is centrally located on campus, near the duck pond. The rooms in Reed come equipped with a private bathroom and a compact fridge and stove top. Gilbert Hall is the newest building on campus and has a restaurant located on the ground floor. The rooms in Gilbert are double occupancy, yet spacious, and feature private bathrooms. Unfortunately, Gilbert is intended primarily for freshmen, which is the only catch. UWA is offering some of best housing a university could offer. Staying on campus gives students the opportunity to meet more people and become more responsible.

When you sign up to get a college dorm room, the picture in your head is amazing. You see lots of cool things in your room and your friends coming over to hang out. You just expect it to be that way. Sadly, when you move into a college dorm room, you notice how plain everything is. It’s up to you to make your dorm room your own. Customizing your dorm room can get a little expensive at times but if you follow good tips and shop around it makes the price go down. Females can get fake flowers to dress up their dreary rooms. Just buy small vases from a dollar store along with fake water beads. Then buy flowers to match your

comforter set. Males can pick out their favorite movie posters to hang on the walls and grab them some bean bag chairs to put in the room so friends can come play video games during off times. Grab a corkboard, your favorite material, and some matching ribbon. Glue the material to the board and place the ribbons on it with thumb tacks. This can be used for pictures, notes, assignments, or simply as a decoration on

the wall. Target and Wal-Mart offer affordable decorations. Everything is always less expensive if you plan ahead and buy it little by little, starting at the beginning of summer.

But most importantly, do not give up on the job if you do not get it at first. It will look good on your resume if you can keep the job and you will find valuable experience in the long run.

summer safety gabrielle manuel

Summertime is a great time to escape from the stresses of school and really let go of your inhibitions. However, amidst all the revelry and freedom, do not forget to remain safe and keep your wits sharp for possible dangers. While vacationing with family or friends, do not be discouraged from meeting new people. Trust your instincts when encountering possible friends or summer romances. If you do meet a person you decide to go on a date with, let a family member or friend know the name of your date and the location of your rendezvous. If possible, go on a group date with some of your friends present. This advice may sound tedious and mundane, but your safety is definitely at risk! If you ever feel apprehensive, quickly and politely remove yourself from that location. If you do consume alcoholic beverages, avoid accepting drinks from strangers. Many scenarios can go awry just from this one “kind” gesture. If you ever leave your drink unattended, do not resume drinking it because you never know who is lurking and watching for the right opportunity to slip something in your drink. When choosing an ideal vacation location, always research the area that you will be visiting. Know what areas to avoid and what spots are tourist-friendly. It would be better to find someone who is familiar with the area that is trustworthy. As much as we try to blend in with the areas we visit, many times, it seems as though there is a sign that reads, “Hey! I’m not from here!” Remain cautious in unfamiliar environments. Remember that safety comes in numbers when visiting a new city; therefore, travel in groups. As you travel this summer, be mindful of your safety, soak up the culture and learn as much as possible!

ings. The app allows users to report gas prices so that the information stays up-to-date and reporting prices can pay since Gas Buddy has gas card giveaways each week. To top it off, the app is completely free. So you are in a strange town and you really need to use the lavatory? AT&T Interactive R&D has released Have2P, an app displaying where the closest restrooms are, if they are public, and how clean the facilities are. The free app is also great for moms with young children

because it shows which bathrooms are equipped with changing stations. This app’s database is also updated by the users. Put a little something different in the mix with an app from Digital Outcrop, Mixology. This free app offers thousands of alcoholic drink recipes. Just type in what you have on hand to mix and shake it up. Even if the booze dries up, the party doesn’t have to; the app also includes a bar and liquor store locator. Trying to get in shape or just keep your beach ready bod this summer? Spark People is a great all-in-one app that allows you to track and meet your goals. When you start the app, you set your goal (you can always go back and change this). From there, the app suggests how many calories you can eat and how much you should exercise. Some of the best features of this free app are the vast selection of pre-entered food items and a list of cardio and strength-building exercises that include even household chores and ping pong! The last app is for the person who is always losing everything: her keys, his car, her phone, whatever it may be. It is probably a wise decision for everyone to install the Find My iPhone app or back up all of your information, including photos, videos, contacts, notes, and any other personal data to a computer.

A universal truth for all Americans right now (except Located in Foust Hall 7 maybe the ones featured on every Bravo tv show) is that money is tight. This summer’s hottest vacations are going to have to take place close to home on a single tank of gas, and at the end of the night you either pitch a tent or head home cause there is no dough for a hotel this year. This is a guide to some of the better-known and lesser-known vacation spots just outside your backdoor. Do not expect to see any typical beaches on this list. 1.) History may not be exciting in class, but to see what actually happened here in Alabama in the 1960’s is truly moving. Take a journey through the past and explore Alabama through the eyes of some of the greatest civil www.uwaalumni.com rights leaders in history. Start your journey in Montgomery at the Civil Rights Memorial Center where “visitors can sign a pledge to promote racial justice,” then visit the Rosa Parks Museum and see the actual bus where Parks took her fateful seat. As your last stop in Montgomery, visit the Dexter Parsonage Museum where Dr. Martin Luther King and his family once lived. Today the home houses a museum that will guide you through the journey that inspired Martin Luther King, Jr. When you leave Montgomery, take the route down highway 80 to Selma. You may feel an eerie presence of the thousands of men, women, and children who marched on this very road for basic human rights in March of 1965. Once you arrive in Selma, visit the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute to learn more about the individuals behind the scenes in the civil rights movement. If you can not make it to Selma or Montgomery, there are several other civil rights history hotspots you can visit *sponsored by the active members and alumni of Tau Kappa Epsilon- throughout the state including the Tuskegee Human and Livingston Chapter Vocabulary Civil Rights Multicultural Center and the 16th Street Bapis the key to intelligence. tist Church in Birmingham. Read to your children every night. 2.) Alabama also boasts a broad Native American history and there are several sites throughout the state where you can explore ancient Native American lands. If you are in eastern Alabama, past Auburn, you can visit the Chattahoochee Indian Heritage Center. Many of the Indians who belonged to this tribe were removed during the trail of tears. If you are in northern Alabama, near Decatur, you can visit the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center to see ceremonial and burial mounds or just go fishing. If you are in western Alabama, near Tuscaloosa, visit Tracie Moundville Archaeological Park and trek the nature trails, visit the campgrounds, or climb the 26 prehistoric mounds. 3.) If history is not for you, maybe you would prefer to experiment with a science themed vacation. If you are near Birmingham, you can visit the McWane Science Center and play with the hands-on displays or see an IMAX movie. If you are closer to Huntsville, check-out the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and be sure to get some astronaut ice cream in the gift shop before you leave. In south Alabama, put on your walking shoes to visit the 50-acre Dothan Area Botanical Gardens. Located about mid-way between Talladega and Sylacauga, Desoto Caverns offers a great way to get out of the heat and explore some impressive stalagmites and stalactites. 4.) Perhaps you are more of a sports nut; there are still plenty of sites for you to see. Visit the Paul Bear Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa and see a piece of memorabilia once owned by the Bear. Birmingham is home to the oldest baseball stadium in the country. Rickwood Field was built 102 years ago! If you have the need for speed, visit the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and tour the track at Talledega;

or, if you are in Birmingham, visit the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, which boasts the largest collection of motorcycles in the world and also has a large collection of race cars and other racing artifacts. For the slower-paced sports enthusiast, Alabama is home to the longest golf trail ever created. With courses in 11 locations throughout the state you are never far from a Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, which are located in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Gadsden, Greenville, Hoover, Huntsville, Mobile, Muscle Shoals, Opelika, Point Clear, or Prattville. 5.) Maybe you just want to enjoy some entertainment. During the summer months, Oak Mountain Amphitheater hosts several outdoor concerts. Take a blanket to sit on and a friend and go see what is playing in the park. Another park to visit on these hot days is Alabama’s Splash Adventure Waterpark, formerly Alabama Adventure, located between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham on 20/59, the park has a rides side and a water park side. Splash Adventure often offers weekend concerts included in your ticket price and discounted rates for season passes and evening hours tickets on days there are no concerts. 6.) Mississippi has several casinos located in Biloxi, Choctaw, Greenville, Helena, Natchez, Tunica, and Vicksburg. You might not strike it rich, but $10 on the penny machines can provide an hour or more of entertainment. Many casinos offer first time guests special deals such as free money to spend on the machines or even free meals; visit guest services at any casino to see what you can get. 7.) Mississippi and Alabama were home to many music legends and the music scene is still very much alive in both states. Located between Montgomery and Mobile just off I-65 in Georgiana, the Hank Williams, Sr. Boyhood Home and Museum features items once owned by Williams and other memorabilia. Meridian, Mississippi was once home to the “father of country music,” Jimmie Rodgers. Today you can visit the Jimmie Rodgers museum and learn about the man who has been inducted into three different music halls of fame. Tupelo, Mississippi is the birthplace of one of the most iconic pop stars of all time, Elvis Presley. Today, visitors can still walk through the home where Elvis was born in 1935. Other famous musicians from Mississippi include Conway Twitty, from Friar’s Point; Tammy Wynette, who was raised near Tremont; and Paul Overstreet, who was raised in Vancleave. Country music is not the only music to have strong roots in the area. Blues music is said to have been born in Biloxi. With greats like B.B. King, who was born in Berclair; Bo Diddley, from McComb; “Mississippi” Fred McDowell, who was working as a sharecropper in Como when he began recording his music; Ike Turner, former husband of Tina Tuner, is from Clarksdale; McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, was born in Rolling Fork; Otis Clay was born in Waxhaw in 1942; Sam Cooke was born in Clarksdale; and W.C. Handy was inspired to write award winning songs while waiting on a train in Tutwiler. If you are looking to hear some good live bands and enjoy a tasty meal, try Hal & Mal Restaurant and Bar in Jackson. Hal & Mal’s also hosts other live events including book readings featuring famous authors and comedy events. A vacation doesn’t have to be elaborate or take you far from home. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have an enjoyable time. Just open your back door and try something new or different; you will be surprised what kind of vacations you can have this way.

did fdr die of a stroke? On March 29, 1945, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt left the White House for Warm Springs, Ga., where he had received therapy for polio. He had planned to rest up and to write a speech for an important radio broadcast he was scheduled to give on April 13. On April 12, he was sitting at his desk, reading the mail that had been flown in from Washington, while an artist, Mrs. Elizabeth Schoumatoff, painted his portrait. Suddenly, the President fell out of his chair. As the artist knelt by his side, Roosevelt whispered, “I have a terrible headache.” These were his last words. His personal physician diagnosed the official cause of death as a cerebral hemorrhage—a stroke.

strange news . . .

do-it-yourself-vasectomy alan brown

In 2009, a 24-year-old man entered a supermarket in Bristol, England. He walked over to the seafood section and stood by the lobster tank. Looking around to make sure that no one was watching him, the man grabbed a pair of lobsters and stuffed them down his pants. He darted past the check-out girl and was on his way out the door when he doubled over in pain and began screaming. The owner of the supermarket called the EMT’s, who removed the man’s pants and discovered the two lobsters, crunching down on his testicles with their claws. They removed the lobsters with pliers and delivered the would-be shoplifter to the hospital where he stayed for three days. The doctor who examined the man told reporters, “Basically, it was a do-it-yourself vasectomy. The patient’s sexual abilities will be normal, but he will never be able to have children.” The manager of the supermarket took pity on the man and decided not to press charges. “I

think he’s learned his lesson,” the store manager said. “I doubt that he’ll ever steal again.”

rumor has it

I'm convinced that half the Internet traffic is made up of—no, not porn— forwarded messages filled with hoaxes, urban myths, misinformation, unsubstantiated rumors and other time wasters. Every week, well-meaning friends and relatives forward junk E-mail to me that they actually believe is true, without having vetted it first. After all, it's typed, so it must be true, right? Seriously? Stop. Think. Don't click forward until you check Snopes.com for research that will keep you from looking silly in the eyes of your recipient. For example, did Barack Obama use a Social Security number stolen from a Frenchman born in 1890? If you share a photo on Facebook, will the the burn victim, a little Polish girl, receive $3 to offset the costs of her medical care? Are some plastic bottles left in residents' yards actually dangerous bombs? Are Muslims exempted from legislated requirements to purchase health insurance? Just one of these widely circulated claims is true. Can you guess which one?

“like” free speech?

Way back in 2009 in Hampton, Va., incumbent Sheriff B.J. Roberts was seeking reelection, but as you might expect with any political office, not everyone was behind him 100%. In fact, several of his employees wanted to see him replaced, or so one might gather from the fact that six of his staff members actively supported one of his opponents. One of the six even clicked the “Like” button on his opponent’s Facebook page, and therein lies the rub. Sheriff Roberts fired the unhappy lot for their traitorous behavior. The employees sued, as you might expect, claiming their First Amendment right to free speech had been violated. No problem. But the Facebook clicker’s case has caused some controversy that could easily affect you. Technically, you see, the worker did not actually “say” anything. Now, some three years later, Judge Raymond A. Jackson of Federal District Court ruled in favor of the sheriff, writing in his decision that “Simply clicking a button is different and does not warrant First Amendment protection.” Let this incident stand as yet another reminder that Facebook can hurt you more than help you. Your words live forever in cyberspace, and your old self can quite easily shoot your new self in the proverbial foot, heart (and wallet).

I’m torn—I admit it—I’m still looking for the single app that will make my New iPad function the way my brain works with paper and pen. I’ve downloaded many apps that come close, but I still find I use different programs to create new works. (At least, however, I can actually find projects thanks to Evernote.) The app that most promises to transform my life is MagicalPad from a small startup in Massachusetts that dreams big. They not only want to keep your notes, they want to help you “take control of your ideas.” Their visual approach is a natural for the spacious iPad screen. Checklists, outlines, tasks, and project plans are just a touch away. It syncs with the cloud, and backs up to a host of services, such as Dropbox and Evernote. $4.99

muse: to ponder; to be absorbed in deep thought

. . . rofl

alan brown A man who worked in a large accounting office stared at the huge pile of work on his desk and decided that he needed a personal leave day. He realized that the best way to persuade his boss that he needed a day off was to act like he was crazy. He stared up at the ceiling, thinking. Suddenly, he got an idea. He climbed up on his desk, jumped up in the air, and grabbed an over-hanging beam. His secretary, baffled by the man’s weird behavior, asked him what he was

doing. “I’m acting like I’m nuts so Mr. Simmons will let me go home.” A few minutes later, Mr. Simmons walked up to the man and asked him what the problem was. When the man replied that he was a light bulb, Mr. Simmons told him to go home and rest. As the man walked through the office door, his secretary grabbed her purse and stood up from her desk. “Where are your going?” Mr. Simmons asked. “Home,” she replied. “I can’t work in the dark.”
