On campus living is something that every college student should experience. The experience of living on your own and having a roommate play a huge role in preparing students for the “real world.” There are a total of seven resident halls that are planned to be open in the fall. Gilbert hall, the new hall for freshmen, will feature double rooms, meaning the residents will have roommates. The expected room rate for living in Gilbert is $2,250 and a 14-meal plan of is required. New freshmen will be assigned to Gilbert Hall. However, even if a new freshman is assigned to another dorm, he or she will still be required to have a 14-meal plan. Hoover Apartments, phase 1, are double dorms priced at $2,730 and require a meal plan of at least nine. Hoover Apartments, phase 2, are single dorms that cost $2,680 and require a meal plan of nine as well. For Hoover Apartments, applying residents must be sophomores or above. Patterson Hall has double rooms, are priced at $1,870, and residents must have a meal plan of nine and be classified as sophomore or above. Reed Hall is another double dorm that is expected to cost $2,000 and requires a meal plan of nine. Priority housing in Reed Hall is given to students with a Trustee Scholarship. Last but not least, Stickney Hall is a double-roomed dorm that is priced at $1,780 and requires a meal plan of at least nine. Stickney’s priority housing is given to students with Trustee scholarships. The meal plan rates for the 2012-13 year have not been determined at this time. The fee to register for housing for new freshman is $130; however, if you are a current resident reapplying for housing, the fee is $30. Applying for housing is a relatively simple process. Students cannot apply online right now, but the application can be printed. Applications must be filled out completely and turned in with a check or money order. Cash is not accepted. The deadline for priority housing has already passed. However, second priority housing is given to applicants who apply before May 1. Incoming freshmen are required to live on campus for at least one academic year. A form can be printed and submitted to Housing in order to be exempt from this rule at www.uwa.edu/freshmanresidency.aspx. Other exemptions can be found on that page as well. Renter’s insurance, or property insurance, for personal items is encouraged but not required.

Dorms are already furnished with desks, chairs, beds, closet areas, and dresser cabinets; however, each hall has specific things that are included in the dorms. Gilbert Hall offers a private bathroom with a shower. Patterson Hall features a full refrigerator and stove, as well as private bathrooms for each room. Reed Hall contains a mini-fridge, stovetop, and a private bathroom. Each Stickney Hall dorm has a full-sized refrigerator, stove, and a private bathroom. Some rooms in Stickney Hall are furnished for up to three students. Hoover Phase I has double bedrooms that include the basic furnishings along with two bathrooms, a sofa, end table, TV stand, and a dining table with four chairs. Each kitchen of Hoover Phase I, has a refrigerator and stove. Hoover Phase II has all the basic furnishings with four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sofa, a TV stand, and a breakfast bar with four barstools. Each kitchen is complemented with a refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and stove.

The 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic will occur on April 15, 2012. The story of the “indestructible” luxury passenger liner is one that captivated the attention of the world in 1912 and has continued to hold our attention ever since. The saga of the Titanic has remained relevant to even younger generations through the production of movies about the fateful tragedy of the Titanic. The Titanic was created to be the largest and most luxurious British passenger liner of its time. Investors spent 7.5 million dollars to build this 46,328 ton beauty. Passengers of every class boarded the Titanic to enjoy the deluxe amenities and bask in the ambiance of new, cutting edge

technologies. A total of 2228 passengers and 1319 crew members were on board the ship on April 15, 1912. The passengers were broken down into first, second, and third classes, with both famous and non-famous travelers. Of course, the passengers of first class were the wealthy and famous while members of the second were middle class families; however, those in the third class were mostly immigrants hoping to see freedom upon reaching America. Also, the members of the third class were not able to enjoy the amenities of those in the first or second class. As for the night of the sinking of the Titanic, many of the details are sketchy but there are some facts that are definite. After a stop to pick up more passengers before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to America, the Titanic was warned about ice-ridden water and was then told to enter the area with caution. Because of the grandeur of the “unsinkable ship,” the captain continued on through the waters at full speed. The Titanic sank after only two hours and forty minutes of being punctured by an iceberg that night. The crew members tried to navigate a new route once they realized that they were going to hit the iceberg, but doing so forced the iceberg to tear horizontally across the hull, causing the ship to sink with an increasing rate. Another factor that made the ship sink quickly was actually the construction of the ship! The “watertight” hull was not actually watertight, which allowed more water into the ship. That night, 1523 people died yet only 300 bodies were recovered. More passengers would have survived if the maximum number of 64 lifeboats had been on board as well. The captain and crew decided to only load twenty so that the passengers could enjoy more deck space, which dropped the possible survivor rate from 50 percent to 37 percent. By the time a neighboring vessel was able to arrive on the scene, the only remnants of the Titanic were the survivors in the lifeboats. The ship split in two and lies 1970 feet apart on the ocean floor. Seventy-four years after that tragic night the remains of the infamous ship were found on July 14, 1986.

The Easter bunny hid eggs and gave UWA students a chance to win an IPad on April 6. The Campus wide Easter egg hunt took place in front of the Student Union building with eggs hidden everywhere from tree branches to in-

side pipes. 500 eggs were hidden from the SUB lawn all the way to the duck pond and from the parking lot to the shrub bushes on the other side of the tennis courts. Thirty of the eggs contained chances to win IPad. Some of the

eggs held multiple gift cards to various places including Wal-Mart and Sonic. The person who found the most eggs also was entered into the drawing to win the IPad. The winner of the IPad has not been announced yet.

zombie apocalypse hits uwa d ' anthony jackson

Have you ever wondered how you would handle the zombie apocalypse? Well, here is your chance. The UWA Residence Hall Association will be hosting a game of Humans vs. Zombies. The event will be from April 14th at 8:00 AM until April 21 at 8:00 PM. Humans vs. Zombies is a game of tag involving two teams in a life or death struggle to survive. The goal of the game for the humans is to survive until the end of the set time limit of seven days. The goal for the zombies is to eliminate every human player in the game. Players are eliminated by being physically tagged by a zombie. Humans are identified by wearing bandanas on their arms. Zombies are identified by wearing bandanas on their heads. Registration for the game is simple. Go to www.hvzsource.com/

uwa and register a profile. Be sure to set a profile picture in order to successfully sign up. Once registered, you will be given an I.D. Number. Write that number on an index card and keep it on you at all times. When a player is tagged, the zombie who got the tag will be required to go to www. hvzsource.com/uwa and type in that number in order to successfully report an elimination. Zombies are required to feed at least once every 48 hours, or else the zombies will starve. Humans are allowed to use Nerf blasters and balled up socks to eliminate zombies. Once a zombie is eliminated, the zombie is stunned for 15 minutes. There are certain no-play zones on campus. Any hostile actions in noplay zones will result in a ban from the game. No-play zones are any

academic building on campus, The Caf, and Residence Halls. Extracurricular activities are safe, but going to and from those events is considered fair play zones. Fair play zones consist of every area on campus other than those listed as no-play zones. Nerf blasters are available from a variety of stores. If you want to spend less money, Dirt Cheap in Demopolis and Meridian has Nerf blasters for very low prices. If you need a blaster in a pinch, Fred’s and Dollar General both sell basic blasters. All equipment must be provided by the player. Roger Waters has something of a checkered reputation amongst music fans. Often regarded as arrogant, difficult to work with, and overbearing, Waters did his image no favors when he pursued legal action against his former bandmates in an effort to stop them from continuing under the Pink Floyd name in 1986. The following year, a compromise between Waters and guitarist David Gilmour was reached that allowed Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason to continue to record music as Pink Floyd. It seemed as if the greedy Waters had been defeated and Pink Floyd fans around the world could enjoy one classic album after the other for decades to come.

Recent DNA testing has discovered that Bertold Wiesner, who owned and operated a British fertility clinic during the 1940s, may have fathered as many as 600 of the children conceived in his clinic without the knowledge of the expectant mothers. Recent discoveries suggest that the bizarre choice was inspired by the doctor’s interest in eugenics, an antiquated science that aims to “improve the qualities of the human species.” Unfortunately, little is known of his true motives. DNA testing is the only way to prove how many children Wiesner fathered since he passed away in the 1970s, and his wife destroyed all of his records.

Three-month-old Neha Afreen died in Bangalore, India, on Wednesday after sustaining severe beatings from her father who wished he had a son, not a daughter. Last week, a couple in Jadhpur refused to accept their newborn daughter after a male baby was accidentally placed in their arms. The couple continued the fight until DNA testing proved they were not the parents of the baby boy.

That scenario didn’t happen. The Gilmour-led Pink Floyd released one of the biggest abominations in music in 1987’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason.” Gilmour was easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time, but when it came to creative vision, he was severely lacking. Without Waters at the helm, Pink Floyd was unable to create anything that sounded remotely on par with their past material. Their next album, “The Division Bell,” wasn’t released until 1994. During this long period between albums, Gilmour spoke at length with numerous Pink Floyd fans, hired professional lyricists, and painstakingly attempted to recreate the classic Floyd feel that was severely lacking in the ‘87 release. What resulted was an album that certainly recalls classics like “Wish You Were Here” but ultimately lacks any real substance whatsoever. The ‘94 Pink Floyd was a group of musicians making a calculated effort to sound as much like ‘74 Floyd as they could. It had no soul. Waters didn’t exactly light the world on fire with his solo career. Of course, Waters was working at far more of a disadvantage than Gilmour. Gilmour had the very marketable name of Pink Floyd to tour under. The name alone was so legendary that ticket sales would never be a concern, no matter how awful the band’s new material may have been. In addition to recording an

almost universally inaccessible album with “The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking,” Waters had to deal with the fact that mainstream audiences had no idea who he was. He called his first solo tour “Which One’s Pink,” in reference to his former position in the band and even employed the talents of Eric Clapton as his touring guitarist. Still, Waters lost nearly a million dollars of his own money on the ill-fated tour. Waters learned from his mistakes on “Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking.” That album’s follow-up managed to be much more accessible to music fans by actually featuring a collection of individual songs rather than over an hour’s worth of the same melody playing with sound effects and sporadic bouts of singing sprinkled in. Still, “Radio Kaos” wasn’t an album that deserved to stand up with the masterpieces produced by Pink Floyd in the ‘70s any more than the duds the Gilmour-led Floyd was releasing. That changed with the 1992 release of “Amused to Death.” While the album may say “Roger Waters” on the cover, it sounds every bit like the Pink Floyd album fans wished they had gotten in the ‘90s. “Amused to Death” is a brilliant work by Waters on every level. Lyrically, Waters explores various social trends and concludes that the human race will eventually “amuse itself to death” and will re-surface centuries later as a collection of fossils sitting on couches staring at broken television sets. Dark and cynical as it may be, “Amused to Death” would have fit right in with an album like “Animals.” Musically, Waters has never released a better album. Legendary guitarist Jeff Beck provides the bulk of the lead work and brings a life and and musical edge to the album that Waters’ previous efforts had been severely lacking. Waters was probably every bit as difficult to deal with his as his former bandmates claim. Yet in hindsight, while it may seem a bit much to initiate High Court proceedings against two of your former friends, Waters was absolutely right when he called Pink Floyd a “spent force” in the ‘80s. The best moments the band had without Waters were the concerts they played, concerts that consisted primarily of the group performing one Waters song after the other. “Amused to Death” is the perfect album for any fan of classic Pink Floyd. While it has its grating moments, songs like “What God Wants Parts 1-3,” “Watching TV,” “The Bravery of Being Out of Range,” and the title track fits right into the Pink Floyd Catalogue. While it never came close to achieving the massive mainstream success enjoyed by Pink Floyd, “Amused to Death” is easily one of the best albums of the ‘90s. Five out of five stars.

The boy’s father was arrested when he arrived to pick up his stepson.

fraudulent wedding

Seeing a good chick flick is a lot like seeing Halley’s Comet: you only get the opportunity to do so every few decades. In between the rare gem here and there, the genre of “chick flicks” is made up of a bleak, hazardous wasteland where boys fear to tread. In this woeful place, movies that chronicle topics such as a closet full of bridesmaids dresses, the opening of a restaurant by a character who seems to have absolutely no business in management whatsoever, notebooks that turn out to be tools used to help the elderly remember, and other various, horribly uninteresting, occurrences are the norm. There’ll be no action, there’ll be no witty one-liners, no training montages, and certainly there’ll beno Arnold Schwarzennegger cameos to redeem these cinematic monstrosities. The only thing men can do when they are dragged by the ear to this wretched genre by their significant others is smile and try to think of “Rocky IV” for the next 90 minutes. “Bridesmaids” is different, though. Like 75% of the chick flicks made today, it centers on the woes of being a bridesmaid. Sure, it features the standard “attractive girl who can’t seem to find the right guy and so she sits around talking about why she can’t find the right guy with her friends all day long rather than notice the blatantly perfect mate who is right on front of her the whole time” chick flick plot, but it also has quite a few genuinely side-splitting moments. After enjoying a lunch at a somewhat dodgy looking eatery, the bride-to-be and her bridesmaids travel to an incredibly expensive dress shop where they all abruptly fall victim to food poisoning. Viewers will never look at a bathroom sink in quite the same way after seeing the

results of poorly prepared food in such vivid and terrifying detail. Women may never see a bridal dress in quite the same light either after seeing it successfully used as something of a walking outhouse. Any movie that’s capable of being so impactful is definitely worth at least a passing glance. Another big score for “Bridesmaids” is the fact that it features the hilarious Chris O’Dowd in a major role. O’Dowd has been bringing uncontrollable fits of laughter to his fans for years with his stellar work on the hilarious Britcom, “The IT Crowd.” While O’Dowd is much more restrained as Officer Nathan Rhodes in “Bridesmaids,” not even something as merciless and unforgiving as a chick flick could fully stamp out his genius wit. Almost all men have been, or will be, forced to sit through one of these kinds of movies at least once in their lives. They’ll have to watch movies named after popular holidays that feature a ridiculously large cast and spend 83 minutes doing absolutely nothing before tying the slightest semblance of a plot together in a revelation that almost always results in the entire cast uniting and enjoying a meaningful moment. They won’t even get to enjoy said meaningful moment either because they’ll likely be sent out of the room in order to retrieve a box of tissue. The only reprieve from this relentless onslaught is a movie like “Bridesmaids.” So don’t grumble and complain when a bowl of popcorn and this DVD are on the agenda for the night. Instead, embrace it, enjoy it. It’s no “Rocky IV,” but it could be much, much worse.

a hunger for reading amber hallenbeck

“The Hunger Games” is the first book in the trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The novels take place in the land of Panem, a world set in the future where 12 districts live under the rule of the Capitol. Many years prior to the opening of the novel, a war shook the world when District 13 rebelled. District 13 was eradicated, and the Capitol initiated the games to show the twelve remaining districts that the Capitol still held all the power. The Hunger Games is a live event in which 12 males and 12 females - one of each from every district - fight to the death. These 24 children are called tributes. The only rule in the Games? Kill or be killed. When it comes to the day of the Reaping - the day where tributes are chosen from a bowl of names each year - every male and

female from the age of 12 to 18 are split into group by age and gender to wait and see if his or her name is called. In District 12, the names of Peeta Mellark and Primrose Everdeen are called. When sixteen-yearold Katniss Everdeen hears her little sister’s name, she volunteers to take Prim’s place. This is the first time in District 12’s history that a volunteer enters the games. Being chosen has always meant a death sentence. However, survival comes as second nature to Katniss; she’s been on the edge of death before. “The Hunger Games” has recently been adapted to film. “The Hunger Games” movie was released into theaters on March 23 of this year. “The Hunger Games” will show in the University Cinema on April 13.

Alabama author Irene Latham paid UWA a visit on Thursday April 5, 2012. Latham, author of “Leaving Gee’s Bend,” is an award-winning author and poet. “Leaving Gee’s Bend” is a wonderful novel about a young girl who has to overcome many adversities. She documents her journey through these experiences by quilting. The novel is set in 1930s Wilcox County, Ala. The main character, Ludelphia, is a spirited character, who is blind in one eye. She begins to learn quilting from her mother. The novel is historical fiction about the raid on Gee’s Bend in which a store owner’s wife repossessed everything her deceased husband had ever loaned out to the poor sharecroppers of Gee’s Bend. She even

11

leaving gee’s bend gabrielle manuel

took the chickens that were hatched from the eggs he sold. Another fascinating event that the novel covered was the intervention of the Red Cross in 1933. Latham stated that she used this book to “bridge the gap and fill in the blanks” about certain parts of the actual history that remain a mystery to the public. Inspiration for the story of Ludelphia and her quilting journey was fueled by the fact that the author’s mother was a seamstress. She was reminded of her love of sewing after seeing “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend” at Whitney Museum in New York. In addition to speaking on the topic of her book, Latham also shared her experiences with becoming an author. Latham is a graduate of The Univer-

sity of Alabama and The University of Alabama at Birmingham; however, she never took a writing course. She was always encouraged by her father to write since early childhood, so Latham began to teach herself how to write in prose. Latham admitted that this was an arduous task to accomplish on her own, especially being a mother of three boys. Latham encouraged everyone to “Just find a way to tell your story; it doesn’t have to be in writing.” Latham also encouraged the writers to write about what intrigues them, to trust that the words for their stories will come to them, and to drop the reader directly into the action of the story.

Randy Savage was the greatest professional wrestler of all time. He had no flaws whatsoever. Savage was the total package. He could work a great match with anyone, his charisma and ability to put a crowd in the palm of his hand was unequaled, and his commitment to his craft was legendary. Savage brought everything that his peer, and the biggest star in the industry’s history, Hulk Hogan brought to the table and more. He was a creative genius both in and out of the ring and was one of only a handful of wrestlers who completely transcended the business in terms of crossover appeal. “Macho Man” Randy Savage is a bona-fide cultural icon. People who have never even watched a wrestling match instantly recognize his trademark voice thanks to his famous Slim Jim commercial campaign.

12 april 2012

Most importantly, the Macho Man was my favorite wrestler from the moment I first saw him. I didn’t get to live through the epic battles with Ricky Steamboat, Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, or Ric Flair that Savage waged on some of the biggest pay-per-views in the industry’s history, cementing himself as the one, true “Mr. Wrestlemania,” no matter what Shawn Michaels may say. Instead, my first glimpse of “the lord and master of the ring” occured when Savage was providing commentary for the earliest episodes of WWF’s “Monday Night Raw.” I had no idea how he was able to see while wearing those ridiculous sunglasses of his and I pondered, at great length, what bizarre accident must have befallen him to result in his unique, throaty voice. When I discovered Savage, the opportunities to see him actually get in the ring and perform were few and far between. Back in the early nineties, “Raw” was only an hour long and consisted primarily of short, pointless matches with main event caliber bouts featuring toplevel talents often advertised weeks ahead of time. The days leading up to seeing the Macho Man take on the likes of Samu, Irwin R. Schyster (IRS, the wrestling taxman), and Doink the Clown were comparable to the weeks leading into Christmas at the Sims’ household. I waited, with bated breath, for any chance I had to see Savage take to the ring and drop the ever-impressive top-rope elbow onto his unfortunate opponents. Randy Savage disappeared from the WWF in late ’94, leaving an ever-present void on my Monday nights for weeks. My interest in wrestling began to wane almost immediately. While I enjoyed watching guys like Bret Hart, there was definitely something missing without Randy Savage’s endless array of multicolored cowboy hats, sunglasses, and jackets. In what almost seemed like a Thanksgiving miracle, the

www.uwa.edu/muse

Macho Man showed up, totally unexpectedly, for an interview one night while I was watching WCW Saturday Night with my father in November. I ran through every room in my house, pumping my arms in jubilation. The Macho Man was back. As it turned out, Randy Savage jumped ship to WCW in order to wrestle on a full-time basis again. It seemed as though I had truly done something right in my life every weekend, as WCW aired a grand total of four programs on Saturdays and Sundays, and Savage commonly wrestled in the main events of all of them. For a kid like me who had always been considered a bit strange compared to his peers, believing in a character like Randy Savage was a big deal. Savage was, above all else, one of the most unique figures in wrestling. In his own way, the Macho Man encouraged a younger version of yours truly to ignore the odd looks or frequent laughter I may have received from my peers on a daily basis and simply carry on. Randy Savage may have been nothing more than a legendary figure from a staged “sport,” but, aside from my father, he was the first living, breathing hero that I ever invested in. Odd as it may sound, Mr. Macho Madness, himself, had a significant and profound impact upon my life. On May 20, 2011, Randall Mario Poffo died after suffering a massive heart attack while driving with his wife in Seminole, Fla. The man who once inspired me as a child swerved off of the road and hit a tree in order to avoid hitting other motorists; a final, and superbly fitting, act of heroism that effectively closed the book on the incomparable life and career of the greatest promoter of all time. It can truly be said that the great wrestling promotion in the clouds needed a new World Champion. Rest in Peace Macho Man, you will never be forgotten. To quote the legend: “Oooooh yeahhhhhh!!”

It is no secret that UWA offers a plethora of fitness opportunities to its students. From ultimate frisbee and canoe rental for outdoor sports to top-of-the-line equipment and a constantly changing line up of aerobics classes, students can come up with a new way to stay active every day of the week. Now, thanks to a partnership between UWA and the Alabama Strategic Alliance for Health, all residents in Sumter County can also take part in two, new fitness programs at UWA. The first program is “Outdoor Fitness Fever Group Exercise,” which will meet Mondays at

5:15 p.m. beginning on April 16, on the SUB lawn. The second program provides the university with several bikes and jogging strollers. This equipment can be checked out in the SUB basement for 4-hour time slots. The best part about both of these programs is they are completely ***free***. Any Sumter county resident can attend the group fitness classes or present a driver’s license or photo ID to check out any of the bikes or strollers. For more information about either of these programs, contact Rebecca Hall at (205) 6525452 or rhall@uwa. edu.

There’s nothing like fabulous decorations that cannot only spiff up your time but also your room! Even with final exams approaching, this fun and creative craft offers relaxation for a stressed mind. Perfect for birthdays, summer parties or even the next dorm room, these fun and spicy decorations will bring a lighter feeling towards any occasion or purpose. Supplies needed: - Four 12” X 12” pieces of scrapbook paper - Two 12” X 12” pieces of cardstock - Ruler - Hot glue gun - Jute twine - Rubber cement - Pen - Hole punch - Scissors

Step 1: Cut the four pieces of 12” X 12” of scrapbook paper into 8” X 12” and 4” X 12” pieces and then begin to pleat the 8”

X 12” piece like a paper fan. Step 2: Fold the pleated paper in half and hot glue on edge to place the two edges together, creating a Japanesestyle fan. Step 3: Repeat step 1 and 2 with the 4” X 12” pieces of paper and then hot glue the folded tip to the fan-shaped 8” X 12” pieces of paper, completing the circle. Step 4: Get the cardstock and create creative circles to place on top of the rubber cement and place in the center of the circled fan. Step 5: Cut out the letters of your choosing and place it on top of the cardstock. You can create any phrase you wish, or simply use your name. Step 6: Punch holes in the fanned circles and string a thread through, creating a pretty and creative work of art!

Monday, April 9, the Department of Languages and Literature held another successful poetry slam. Hunt Annex was packed with 95 audience members all cheering and snapping on the brave contestants. At the end of the night, Sharnika Bell took home the grand prize of $40 cash for her poem “Call it what you want,” in which she advised her haters, “If you don’t like my first three chapters, shut the book.” Adonis Bozeman, affectionately known as “AD” by many on the UWA campus, received second place and a $20 cash prize for his poem “Tiger Bucks,” which he wrote on the spot as he was waiting for the event to begin. At the end of his poem, AD asked the audience to snap for his poem if they are out of Tiger bucks, and the entire audience erupted into loud snapping. Coming in third, with a prize of $10, was Perry “PJ” Turner for a poem about his idea of a perfect woman.

“Darn, I unplugged the wrong cord again!” Still having trouble figuring out which cord goes where? Well how about getting a little more coordinated by using plastic bread clips. All you have to do is write the name of the electronic device that the cord goes to onto the clip, then slide in onto the cord. Ta-da, now you know where all your cords run and can unplug the desired cord every time. Some computer and A/V cords might have to be labeled on both ends to avoid confusion.

If you are looking for some music that will transport you to another place and you have even the slightest interest in the blues, then do yourself a grand favor and grab a pint of cheap whiskey with a RC Cola for a chaser, and pop “My Home is in the Delta, Blues and Spirituals by Fred & Annie Mae McDowell,” on whatever kind of spin-o-rama music machine you have, and get ready to be swept back in time to a dusty Saturday night in some north Mississippi juke joint where the air reeks of home brew and hard times. Commonly referred to as “Mississippi” Fred McDowell, this Como, Mississippi resident is considered one of the preeminent bottleneck slide guitar players in music history, and a huge influence on artists such as Bonnie Raitt, who considered McDowell as her musical mentor. That is pretty good credentials for a Mississippi sharecropper. Born in Rossville, Tenn., just east of Memphis, sometime in 1905 (McDowell never knew the exact date), McDowell began playing the guitar in his teens and learned the bottleneck basics from one of his uncles who used a steak bone for a slide and from going to dances and parties to watch other players. Largely self-taught, McDowell developed one of the most distinctive and original guitar styles that has become the backbone of what is known as a North Mississippi blues. McDowell’s style is grounded by a droning, thumping rhythm on the bass strings in open tunings, created by alternating his thumb while incorporating short licks, or runs, in the rhythm patterns and playing out the melody with his guitar slide, using his forefinger, and then alternately singing the melody at the same time, often finishing a word or phrase with his guitar, and then punctuating the spaces between the verses with his unique slide licks. McDowell is also a powerful and emotional singer, which makes his playing that much more singular. It is a heady combination of guitar playing and singing that makes his music so simple, yet rich and complex at the same time, and well worth a listen. The songs for “My Home is in the Delta,” originally recorded in the fall and spring of 1963 and 64 released on Testament Records, have been re-issued on CD, and they are some of McDowell’s best known recordings. It is “Mississippi” Fred McDowell in his best setting, just him, his guitar and his songs. These recordings were performed with an acoustic guitar, but not all of McDowell’s recordings are acoustic, as he often played an electric guitar. For those of you who like a little lightning in your listening, those recordings are worth seeking out, as McDowell’s sound really comes out with a little electricity, yet his style

amazingly remains the same. That’s not an easy feat, as guitar pickers who know the difference between playing acoustic and electric will certainly attest to. Armed with either guitar, McDowell is a force all his own and demands to be reckoned with.

The tunes on “My Home is in the Delta,” cover a range of stories, from the spurned lover in songs ranging from “Waiting on my Baby” and “The Sun Rose This Morning” to the haunting story of a prisoner, pining for home in “I’m In Jail Again.” McDowell also makes blues standards such as “Six White Horses” and “Diving Duck Blues” sound as if they were his songs. “Six White Horses,” generally attributed to Texas bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, is a fresh departure from Jefferson’s recording, while “Diving Duck Blues” was gleaned from Sleepy John Estes. One of the highlights of the album is McDowell’s “I’m In Jail Again.” McDowell is clearly having fun with the tune as he begins with a slow, drawling droning rhythm and tells the recording engineer to “catch this on there too.” McDowell was set down in front of a microphone and turned loose. And then like an explosion, his voice booms out the lyrics, “Bring me a Christmas present… baby…LAAWWDDDD…I’m in Jail again.” Then he repeats that lyric and finishes by singing “I got sent out

from the work house to the county pen.” McDowell is singing the story of the thousands of African Americans needlessly caught up in the penal work system of the Jim Crow era. He creates an eerie tension between the tones on his guitar and his voice on this number that chills listeners to the bone. And if “Mississippi” Fred McDowell sings that he is in jail, then, by God, you believe it. You can feel the bars, and the despair in McDowell’s voice. If you get tired of the gin-soaked, Saturday night despair in these types of songs, then keep listening because some Sunday morning, better-straighten-up-and-getright singing fills the last half of the album. McDowell and his wife, Annie Mae, make a terrific duo, and they serve up some spirituals with McDowell’s sparse guitar playing. The album features mostly classic, traditional spirituals, such as “Get Right Church,” “Jesus Gonna Make up my Dying Bed,” and “Where Could I Go (But to the Lord),” as well as classics like “Amazing Grace,” “When The Saints Go Marching In,” and “When I lay My Burdens Down.” Mrs. Annie Mae is just as strong and convincing in her singing as her husband, and the combination of old style spiritual singing and McDowell’s unique guitar style creates a truly unique sound. McDowell’s guitar playing is more subdued in the spirituals. He puts less emphasis in the rhythm of the guitar and lets the voices of him and his wife drive the tempo of the songs while playing more subdued slide riffs that support the vocals and stays closer to the melody. There is a reason for this playing style. The older, traditional blues songs and style that McDowell performs was generally meant for a juke joint audience that wanted to dance, not worship. The spirituals performed by Fred and Annie Mae are hauntingly beautiful, and very unique. Their melody in “Amazing Grace” is unlike any other version and worth a listen. There is a real conviction and faith in Annie Mae’s voice when she sings “I know the lord will make a way.” You believe it and have faith in it too. Even though “Mississippi” Fred McDowell passed away in 1972, his music lives on in artists such as Bonnie Raitt and more contemporary groups like The North Mississippi Allstars, who draw from the north Mississippi style that McDowell pioneered. If you want to listen to some unique, real-deal blues, get this album and let McDowell’s music take you to a time when fields were plowed by men following mules, whiskey was drunk from a jar, hard times were really hard, and the blues really were the blues.

“If God created everything, then who created God?” or “Where did God come from?” Atheists often ask these kind of questions after being asked where the universe came from. The question of the origin of God is one of the most prominent questions Christians get. Understanding the nature of God gives great insight to how to answer the question of His origin. God is eternal. When Moses asked God whom he should tell the children of Israel sent him, God said, “I AM WHO I AM… thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:15). When God says, “I AM WHO I AM,” He is saying that He is existence. He always has been, He is, and He will always be who He is. The prophet Isaiah says that He “inhabits eternity” (Isaiah 57:15). He is the “Ever-

lasting Father” (Isaiah 9:6). Therefore, when people ask, “Where did God come from?” they are essentially

asking a question like, “What does the invisible man look like?” In asking what The Invisible Man looks like, they are assuming that The Invisible Man has something of an appearance. In assuming that The Invisible Man has something of an appearance, they are changing the character of The Invisible Man. When The Invisible Man is given the quality of having an appearance, he ceases to be The Invisible Man because he is no longer invisible. In the same sense, when people ask “Where did God come from?” they are assuming that God has a beginning. In assuming that God has a beginning, they change the character of God and reduce Him to something other than God. The question of “Where

did God come from?” self-destructs because the question is asking, “Where did the God who had no origin originate?” It is a pseudo-question. The English word “pseudo” comes from the Greek word meaning “false” or “fraudulent.” Therefore, a pseudo-question is a question that is not real.

From the inception of the Discovery Channel to the spark of exploration in a six-year-old child at the zoo to the improvement and continued preservation of our planet, animal and plant life play a crucial role in our lives. The earth’s resources and vegetation are limited, and to maximize its future existence while maintaining our own, biologists are needed to study animal and plant life through their functions, growth, interactions, and structures. Most biologists require graduate school preparation and, depending on the specified area of interest, either a master’s or a doctorate. In order to be considered a biologist, one must have extensive skill, knowledge, and experience with some on-thejob training. A biologist must know how to bring all personality types together, mesh them into a functioning team, and accomplish common goals. He or she must also have very advanced communication and organizational skills. A biologist may be required to have a background in life sciences like anatomy,

So, to answer the question, one must reword the question into two separate questions and then answer them both (if appropriate). The first question must be, “Did God have a beginning?” If He did have a beginning, the second question can be asked: “If God had a beginning, how did

He come to be?” However, the answer to the first question gives no room to ask the second question because God did not have a beginning. Questions like these sometimes cause Christians to shy away from sharing their faith because they are not sure how to answer. However, there is potential help. On Mondays, at 7:45 in Wallace Hall Auditorium, Campus Apologetic Ministries (CAM) has 30-minute lectures on topics that are heavily debated in the Christian faith.

You go to see “Hunger Games” at the University Cinema this Friday, and halfway through the movie, you realize you really shouldn’t have drunk two Mountain Dews and three coffees. You know you are going to be making frequent runs to the bathroom, but you don’t want to risk missing any of the good parts of the movie. Runpee.com has created an app that prevents you from ever missing another action scene while you are in the loo. Runpee.com offers several useful features. The app tells you if there are any funny cut scenes or bloopers after the end credits. If you are late to the movie, you can get a quick run-down of the first five minutes of the movie. The timer literally tells you when to pee with a vibrate reminder option. Connect with Facebook and review the movies or connect with other RunPee users and see how they have rated the movies or connect with other services, including Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB and and Twitter. Finally, use the app as a flashlight to find dropped items in the movie theater, unless, of course, you’ve dropped your phone. This app is also good when you are just sitting at home on the couch watching old movies because there are the same

features for new movies under a tab called classics everything from “Star Wars” to “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

was a prehistoric tribe discovered in the phillipines in 1971? alan brown

The Philippines consist of 7,107 islands and hundreds of ethnic groups. Twelve languages are spoken in Panama. The government official who is in charge of protecting the rights of all these groups is a watch-dog agency called the Panamin. In 1971, the director of Panamin, Manuel Elizalde, Jr., said that a tribesman put him in contact with a primitive tribe of people living in the Philippines’ second largest island, Mindanao. After making a trip to the region where these people were said to live, Elizalde said that these people, who called themselves the Tasaday, lived in huts and farmed. They were a gentle people whose language

had no words for war and violence. The Tasaday immediately proclaimed Elizalde as a god. They walked around naked until Elizalde encouraged them to wear loincloths for the benefit of the tourists and reporters who flocked to Mindanao after Elizalde’s report was made public. In 1972, National Geographic published a pictorial essay on the Tasaday.

strange news . . . snakes on a plane… for real alan brown

On Tuesday, April 3, a pilot for Air Frontier airlines was making a routine flight from Darwin to the remote town of Peppimenarti. As the pilot, Braden Blennerhassett, 26, was preparing to land, he looked down and was shocked to see a large, green snake gliding across the control panel. It slithered down his pants leg. He immediately called the tower. “You won’t believe this,” Blennerhassett said, “but I’ve got a snake on a plane.” The seasoned pilot successfully landed the airliner, but he admitted to reporters afterward that his blood pressure and heart rate were “a bit elevated” during the descent. A wildlife ranger who searched the plane was unable to find the snake, but he did uncover another stowaway: a green tree frog. The plane has been grounded indefinitely until the snake has been removed, even though it is non-venomous.

instagram privacy purchased protection for $1 billion The big news this week is that Facebook acquired Instagram, the uber popular photo filter and posting app, for a reported $1 billion. The company, which debuted Instagram for iPhone in October 2010, developed a user base of some 30 million users with a staff of only 13. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg have confirmed in separate announcements that Instagram will continue as an independent service, although it will be more tightly integrated with Facebook. It will also continue to connect to other popular services. The purchase announcement was made following the recent launch of the Instagram Android app last week, which has already been downloaded over 1 million times.

yahoo tightens belt Beleaguered Internet giant Yahoo plans to save itself by laying off 2000 employees, roughly 14% of its workforce. Incoming CEO Scott Thompson, who is also fighting for control of the board of directors, plans to address its advertising market losses to Google and Facebook with his vision for a new, leaner, meaner Yahoo. Thompson knows firsthand about running a tight ship as the former head of PayPal, eBay's online payment service. Last week, Thompson filed suit against Facebook for patent infringements on Yahoo's Internet technology. Unsurprisingly, Facebook has filed a countersuit against Yahoo for its patent infringements.

As an increasing amount of your life becomes digitized in the cloud, you have every reason to be concerned about your online privacy. Three or four months ago, a lot of hoopla was raised about Carrier IQ’s software that tracks “diagnostic” usage data and provides it to telephone carriers and phone manufacturing companies, ostensibly to maintain a better user experience. However, the software, by the company’s own admission, has the ability to record everything from URLs visited to the text of your SMS messages; it can even record key presses, which seems like a problem when so many services require logins and passwords. Tracking information is supposed to improve service; however, manufacturers and carriers are playing the blame game and dodging what they do with this data while denying its availability to third parties. Is the data “anonymously collected” as the companies have claimed? Just how much of our lives are we willing to expose for the convenience of using this postmodern technology? The good news is that Apple has stopped supporting Carrier IQ with the iOS 5 update. Apple also points out that customers must willingly share information when they set up a new iPhone or iPad, but who can remember what he or she answered to privacy question months or even years earlier? Not me. Not you. To ensure that you are not unintentionally broadcasting so-called diagnostic information on an Apple device, go to Settings>General>A bout>Diagnostics & Usage. Click “Don’t Send.” Although Apple plans to completely discontinue the use of Carrier IQ in the future, note that other companies, such as HTC, Samsung, and Sprint have been reported to still use the data mining service.
