TRUE: The earliest known example of a swastika dates back to 3,000 B.C. The word “swastika” can be traced back to the Sanskrit word “svastika,” meaning “to be good.” Swastikas have been found in the ruins of ancient Troy and in Mayan temples. Native Americans used the swastika as a symbol of good luck for centuries. In World War I, soldiers in the American 45th Infantry Division wore swastikas on their patches to represent the Spanish Heritage of the four southwestern states where many of its members were

born. To Buddhists and Hindus, the swastika is and always has been used as a positive image. The Nazis adopted the swastika because the ancient people of India and Iran used the symbol to signify the purity of their race. One can distinguish a “good” swastika from a “bad” swastika by looking at the angle at which it is positioned. A Nazi swastika is positioned at an angle, but an ancient swastika sits flat.

On the cover: This McDonald’s-esque sculpture on the front lawn of the SUB is actually entitled “Prism Disk.” The sculpture was designed by Carl Billingsley. This sculpture is designed to present a completely different shape and color arrangement from each angle of view and to provide an ever-changing dynamic of form and color throughout 360 degrees of space. You can find images of other sculptures from this series as well as additional work by the artist at Billingsleyatelier.com.

The LRA, or Lord’s Resistance Alliance, was developed over ten years ago. The group had no real cause, was not supported by anyone, and used multiple peace tactics to commit murder. Joseph Kony, the leader of the LRA, has taken over 30,000 children, training them to be ruthless killers and sex slaves.

Since Dec. 1, 2009, as the Invisible Children program began to delve farther into this horrendous crime, over 1,012 people have been murdered by Kony, and 2,224 abducted. On March 5, Invisible Children agent Jason Russell created a heart-touching video, streaming it on YouTube, telling the tale of Kony. His goal is to allow people to see Kony’s crimes so that he can be stopped. The Kony 2012 video has been recognized by Justin Bieber, George Clooney, and Oprah Winfrey. Russell’s idea is to have 20 celebrities and 12 political representatives identify Kony through hashtags on Twitter so people can get something done. On April 20, the Invisible Children are going as far as “Covering the Night,” an activity that involves hundreds of people to posting flyers and signs overnight about Kony all throughout the

public, and South Sudan. The Invisible Children Agency, with the help of motivated individuals who donated a few dollars a month to a program called TRI, set up an LRA Crisis Tracker not only to allow individuals in Africa to make their presence known, but also to show Americans what exactly is going on. Though many are antsy to help the cause to save the children and natives in Uganda and surrounding countries, the Kony 2012 video has been seen by some as a scheme to gain more money for Invisible Children. After the Kony 2012 video was posted, the Ugandan Prime Minster informed individuals over YouTube and Twitter that, even though Joseph Kony is the most wanted war criminal, he is not in Uganda. He goes on to say that Uganda is very peaceful and there is no real threat towards their people. Many do not believe the Invisible Children movement is founded. Some individuals believe that the Invisible Children program is just trying to get money and that Kony has not been active in years. The Invisible Children program is also known for only putting 30 percent of their profits towards their ultimate goal. When these messages of negativity were seen by the Invisible Children organization Jason Russell became agitated, going on to be hospitalized after having a mental breakdown, running through the streets naked and pounding his fists against the side walk. Informers say malnutrition and exhaustion played a role in this crazy stunt. Though the coin has been tossed over whether the story of the Invisible Children is true of false, the idea that millions upon millions of individuals all over the world can come together for one thing--justice--is amazing in itself.

spring break without the beach Brent Lee Spring break is right around the corner and, consequently, people are conjuring up plans for this much needed vacation period. Of course, there is the old standby of a week at the beach, be it Gulf Shores or even Panama City. After all, who can resist the sun, the water, and the sand? However, suppose the beach is just too far away or maybe money is an issue. Exchange the coast for an adventure a little more local and take a trip to the river or maybe even to a close lake. A tradeoff is obviously present. The sprawling landscape of endless coastline isn’t at hand and there is the absence of shops, attractions, and restaurants. However, a trip to a local body of water is the more price-efficient choice, especially with the price

of gas going through the roof. If money isn’t a problem and the old “sand and surf” is getting, well, old, consider a trip north to Tennessee to visit the famous Smoky Mountains. The drive is longer and the trip may be more costly, but the scenery is a charming change from that of the coast. Also, there are just as many attractions, if not more,

than the beach. For example, one could go to a dinner and a show, give Dollywood a visit, or even just spend the day walking through Gatlinburg while taking in the

countless stores, souvenir shops, attractions, and an endless array of restaurants from Bubba Gump’s to the classic Hard Rock Cafe. Going on vacation for spring break is great, but, for some students, it can be a great time just to have free time, ditch the vacation, and get caught up. For example, one can study for an upcoming exam, write a paper, or just take time to finish up a project. However, some students might spend the week making some extra dough and do a few odd jobs here and there. As for the ones who just want peace from the hectic day to day, some R&R is just what’s needed; most people enjoy sleeping in late and just chilling until it’s back to the old grind.

the perfect suit 22 march 2012

gabrielle manuel

With warmer weather approaching, it is time to break out your favorite swimsuit and hit the beach! The key to looking your best and playing up your best assets is to find the perfect swimsuit for your body type. Some fashion faux-pas to avoid are bottoms and tops that are too small. How many times have you gone to the beach and seen some unlucky beach goer trotting around and her swimsuit appears to be holding on for dear life? Onlookers are gawking and waiting in suspense for the strained swimsuit to rupture and send scraps of cloth flying in every

direction. Do not be this person! Make sure to buy a swimsuit or trunks that fit your body type properly and comfortably. If you are more comfortable with a cover-up, please, make sure it covers you up! This tip is more directed for the ladies. Make sure, while selecting that perfect bathing suit, it does not double as lingerie. While this may sound like a good idea, I can assure you that it is not! Unless you are on a Victoria’s Secret photo shoot, pick bathing suits that actually look like bathing suits. Enjoy your time on the beach without having to fight off the sleazy pick-up lines that will

www.uwa.edu/muse

ensue if you were to wear the lingerie-swimsuit. Here’s another tip: X-rated swim suits are not appropriate for familyoriented beaches. Please do not wear a thong bikini to a beach with children. This causes a level of discomfort and also causes a bit of befuddlement to the children, who can sometimes become hysterical. Try to be courteous in the familial environments and remember to cover up! Wherever your vacation destination for this season, remember these simple tips to look your best while having a blast!

la house Next week everyone needs a spring break playlist. The playlist should consist of more than one artist, genre, and time period. Playing old music during spring break will bring back memories of the last break. Playing new music during spring break will make one want to make new memories. However, one does not need a long play list. At least 10 songs should be on the playlist. Here is an example of a spring break playlist. 1. Beyonce ft. Andre 3000 – “Party” 2. Tyga ft. Travis Porter – “Aye Ladies” 3. Taylor Swift – “Our” 4. Adele – “Set Fire To The Rain” 5. Cashing Out – “Cashin’ Out” 6. Robin Thicke ft. Lil Wayne – “Pretty Lil’ Heart” 7. Chris Brown ft. Kevin McCall – “Strip” 8. Rihanna – “Talk That Talk” 9. LMFAO – “Party Rock Anthem” 10. Kirk Franklin – “Smile” Beyonce’s song “Party” will get a person in the mood to have a good time. “Party” is definitely what is needed

to get a good vibe going. Tyga’s song “Aye Ladies” is another party song that makes people wants to dance. “Aye Ladies” will make one ready to have a wonderful week. Taylor Swift’s song “Our” is a relaxing song that will calm a person down after being too hyped. Adele’s song “Set Fire to the Rain” should definitely be on one’s playlist. The song is than the rest of the songs on this playlist and allows listeners to reflect on the past and feel rejuvenated. Cashing Out’s song “Cashin’ Out” is a dancing song. The beat of this song will open one up to be ready to explore new possibilities. Robin Thicke’s song “Pretty Lil’ Heart” envelops a little compassion in the soft lyrics and nice beat. The song will make anyone have a good day or at least be in a good mood while listening. Chris Brown’s song “Strip” is another dance song that can lighten any environment. Rihanna’s song “Talk That Talk” is a sexual song. It digni-

fies the way boys talk cute to girls to get girls to like them. LMFAO’s song “Party Rock Anthem” is all about having a good time. The song is humorous and can make any bad situation seem not so bad. The last song on the playlist is Kirk Franklin’s song “Smile.” “Smile” represents what should be done at the end of the day. After everything is over, said, and done, people should be able to go to sleep smiling. These 10 songs should be on every playlist for spring break.

liz stainton Spring break is coming up, and everyone wants to have a good time, but being safe does not always come in the same moment. Before going down to spring break, students should remember a few simple rules. First, never walk off with people you just met. It’s always cool to meet new people and make friends on spring break, but you have to remember that not everyone in the world is as nice as you are. People should not

be trusted right away. Number two, always use the buddy system. This is especially important for girls on spring break. You should never walk around by yourself on the beach or near the roads, and the darker it gets, the more important this rule becomes. Pick a friend, and keep sight of her at all times. If you lose that friend, make sure to call her immediately to make sure she is safe. What is the last rule to live by during Spring Break 2012?

Do not drink your brains out. Everyone wants to have a good time, and most of us want to drink, but you don’t have to be dangerously drunk to enjoy yourself. Always set a limit for yourself and never go over it. If you know you are tipsy after three drinks, then stop at three drinks so you do not do something stupid. Finally, do not forget to name someone as the designated driver.

diplomat’s daughter murdered

In Caracus, Venezula, investigators have detained 12 police officers following the shooting of a Chilean diplomat’s teenage daughter. Karen Berendique, 19, was shot and killed as officers shot at a vehicle she was riding in with her brother in the coastal city of Maracaibo. Her father is Fernando Berendique, the Chilean Honorary Consul. The shooting happened when police opened fire on the car after it failed to stop at a checkpoint. The car had six bullet holes. Chile’s foreign ministry condemed the killing and called on the Venezuelan officals to swiftly investigate.

A federal court in Brazil has issued an order barring 17 executives from the U.S. oil giant Chevron and Transocean Ltd. from leaving the country. The government is considering criminal charges in an oil spill that occured last year. The oil spill occured in the deep water off of the coast of Rio de Jeneiro in November. Within the next month, Brazillian prosecuters filed a suit against Chevron and the oil rig operator Transocean for 20 billion reais, about 11 million dollars. The suit also calls for a halt to any and all of the oil giant’s operations in Brazil.

the wall immersion edition nelson sims

Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” is a classic rock album that tells the story of love, lust, loss, the dangers of fame, demented grade-school teachers, and overbearing mothers. It is, beyond any doubt, the best double album ever produced. Director Alan Parker adapted the album into a surreal film version in 1981. The album produced some of the most extensive and elaborate live shows of all time, including a memorable performance from the former site of the Berlin Wall in 1990. “The Wall” is the definition of everything that is great about an album. From its thunderous opening track, “In the Flesh?,” to its understated conclusion, “Outside the Wall,” the album is an absolute journey. The listener follows the character of Pink as he deals with one circumstance after the other, each tragedy being the basis for another “brick” in Pink’s figurative “wall” between himself and the rest of the world. Pink is ridiculed by his teachers, smothered by his mother, betrayed by his wife,

for the finished product. It also allows a look at songs that never made it to the final album. The most seasoned of Pink Floyd fans will even be able to spot a few snippets of things that would wind up on the controversial follow-up to “The Wall,” 1983’s “The Final Cut.” Fans who already own copies of “The Wall,” be warned: it’s time to trade up. The remastered edition of the album blows the original out of the water. Not even listening to the old mix with headphones can begin to top the quality of this remastered version. Every sound effect, every television set in the background, and every classic Waters wail sounds like it’s happening live, right before the listener’s eyes.

French authorities are looking for a single gunman riding a black Yamaha motorcycle who is accused of fatally wounding three students and their teacher outside Ozar Hatorah Jewish day school during morning drop off on Monday. A fifth person was also struck by a bullet. With forensics, the bullets have been tracked back to other attacks in the area during the last month, which left three black French soldiers dead. The authorities believe three ex-soldiers who were kicked out for neo-Nazi ties may be to blame.

“marmageddon”

Due to damages from the Christchurch earthquakes four months ago, a New Zealand Marmite factory states that the supplies have run out. New Zealanders are in a state of panic attempting to stock-pile the salty black goo, a spread made from yeast and vegetable oil extract. Stores are being rushed for the last of their supplies. Even the prime minister is in a state of panic as he is on his last jar, he did remark, however, that he could settle for the Australian alternative, Vegemite.

ancient settelments found

Professors Menze from MIT and Ur from Harvard have developed a method of determining what areas of earth were inhabited during ancient times. Using their methods, they have discovered “9,500 possible human settlements across an area of 8,880 mines” using only satellite images of earth. The settlements were located in northern Mesopotamia or modern day northeastern Syria.

return of the white plague

Multiple cases of tuberculosis have been reported in Europe since 2004. Many believed the disease was a thing of the past. Strangely, this outbreak of the disease is affecting the wealthy and the poor in rural areas and in cosmopolitan areas and is becoming increasingly drug resistant. India reports several cases that cannot be cured by any current medications.

and eventually visited by the numerous ghosts of his past and placed on trial in a drugged-out state consisting of hallucinations and vivid, painful memories. “The Wall” has been remastered for a new generation and is now available in several editions, each one boasting more extra features and a higher price tag. The priciest of the new editions is the massive “Immersion Boxed Set.” “The Wall - Immersion Edition” includes five audio CDs and one full length DVD. In addition to an amazing remastered mix of the original recording, the boxed set also boasts a live version of the album, the original home demos of both Roger Waters and David Gilmour, and the original demos from the entire band. This plethora of extras allows the listener a rare view into Pink Floyd’s creative process and gives an even greater appreciation

The live version of the album, previously released under the title of “Is There Anybody Out There?” is a gem in and of itself. “The Wall” concerts were the stuff of legend, highlighted by an intricately detailed light show, flying inflatable animals, and the construction and demolition of a 40-foot high wall of cardboard bricks. But beyond all of that, “The Wall” concerts also featured an amazing musical performance by one of the greatest bands of all time. An audio CD may not reproduce all of the theatrics of the actual concert, but it certainly affirms the fact that beyond all of the pageantry and weirdness, Pink Floyd were an absolutely incomparable musical act. Today’s music lacks the substance and complexity of something like “The Wall.” While it’s not an album for everyone, those who do appreciate it will find themselves thrust headlong into a world that they’ll never want to return from, despite all the darkness contained within.

The bills are supported by a group called Raise Your Pints. About a dozen senators were completely opposed to the bills’ passage. Bill 2878 is expected to affect Mississippi residents and tourists. poison in school

In Birmingham, Ala., the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and firefighters were called to Putnam Middle School because a mercury thermometer was broken, spilling the lethal contents. Mercury is toxic to the point that even a small about spilled directly on the skin will cause severe damage to the brain, lungs, and kidneys, or may even cause death. No students were present in the school at the time. However, a janitor there was not injured. Firefighters had to close off the area to prevent anyone from being exposed. School officials believe they will hire a private contractor to take care of the mercury spill.

of all of their albums. This melodic death metal powerhouse from Waterford, Mich., is known for their solid releases and “Ritual” is no exception. With the in-your-face aggressive attitude, this album never lets up, except when guitarist Ryan Knight churns out some epic solos. The second track, “Moonlight Equilibrium” was the first song made available for streaming from the album in late April 2011 and offers up some brutal and

lentless death metal assault with thundering double bass drums and blast beats from Shannon Lucas. The sixth track, “Carbonized in Cruciform” is easily the most noteworthy track on the album; it showcases the excellent production of Mark Lewis, who produced their last album “Deflorate,” and the profound talents of lead guitarist Ryan Knight with an amazing solo towards the end of the song. The ninth track, “The Grave Robbers Work,” is another example of how The Black Dahlia Murder is always raising the bar higher for the death metal genre with a somewhat melodic approach to some of their songs with beautiful elegant solos. The eleventh track, “Great Burning Nullifier,” gives a chance for bassist Ryan Williams to really shine as he accents the rhythm with a deep, heavy crunch. This is a great album from a band that always delivers quality death metal. “Ritual” can be enjoyed by many people due to their immense level of recognized talent. Anyone looking for deep growling vocals, brutal blast beats and epic solos should look no further and pick up a copy of “Ritual.”

explained that Iberian ham is an expensive delicacy in Spain made from the legs of black Iberian pigs. The pigs are raised in a controlled habitat known as Dehesa. Dehesa consists mainly of grass and bushes with sparse varieties of oak trees, including cork, and is a large source of natural resources. In Dehesa, the pigs are fed a grass only diet, and when used for food, are cured with only air and salt; also, all of the pig is used except for the hooves and hair. The main reason it is a delicacy is because it was often used to avoid religious prosecution after the Muslims had ruled in Spain for over 700 years. Around 1300, the Muslims lost control and stayed in Southern Spain. The Spanish equivalent to today’s CIA only wanted people to believe in Christianity and tortured

people who did not. Dr. Castroviejo-Fisher has been to over 23 countries, including America, France, Venezuela, and Morocco. His wife, Alexis, is a painter, and she has traveled all over with him. Fisher expressed that he enjoyed being in Sumter County because he felt like it is very natural and he enjoys being outdoors. Fisher loves all types of living organisms, but he particularly likes reptiles and amphibians because he feels they are very bizarre and colorful. He thanked The University of West Alabama for inviting him here to Livingston, where he has experienced wonderful hospitality and he hopes to be able to visit again. Fisher gave a lecture in the Calloway Schoolhouse originally titled “The diversity of Spain: One name for many Countries,” however, he decided to change the name to “Why American Cowboys Should Eat Iberian Ham” after giving some thought to how much American cowboys mimicked many of the traditions of Spain, particularly in their attire and chasing of bulls. Rather than a lasso, Spanish cowboys used a long stick with a hook on the end for tripping the cows. Fisher posed the question if American cowboys imitated the Spanish, why would the Americans not eat Iberian ham? During his lecture, Fisher

starting your spring gardens alesha mcneese

Planting a spring garden may sound like a daunting task. However, a successful garden can require as little effort or as much effort as the planter wants to put into it. In college life, very few students have the time or accessibility of land to plant a full garden, so students improvise. Can gardens are a great way to have your very own garden right in your dorm room. Can gardens require very few materials. Soil, tin cans, seeds, water, and sunlight are all you need. Place your can in the windowsill in the sunlight, place soil and seeds inside, water daily and sha-zam! A can garden is born. Preferred plants for can gardens are small herbs and flowers

that will not grow too large. If you don’t have the patience or window space for a can garden, other options are available. Asking to help out with a friend’s garden is a nice bonding experience. You can also volunteer to plant a garden in the community. You will be helping to enhance the community’s beauty. Planting a community garden can also count as community service hours. Garden planting isn’t just for the old and retired. Young college blood can also have fun digging around in the dirt to grow new plants. Whether you plant your own garden or help out a friend, get outside and dig!

google easter eggs One of the most compelling features of Google remains its sense of humor, evident by its penchant for Easter eggs of the digital variety. Easter eggs are little programmer jokes integrated into video games, web pages, phones and other technologies. Discovering them on your own makes for great entertainment, but sharing them with friends is the best way to kill a few minutes. Here are a few of our favorites: Ask google “the answer to life, the universe, and everything” and google returns “42,” a reference to Douglas Adams’ ultimate answer in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Wolfram Alpha, the index for Apple iPhone’s Siri, and Microsoft’s Bing return the same answer, so you know it must be true. Ask “what is the loneliest number,” and Google will con-

firm what Three Dog Night knew all along in their hit song, “One.” Type “recursion” and get stuck in a perpetual loop as Google recommends an alternate spelling: “Did you mean recursion?” Look up “binary”, “hexadecimal” or “octal” to see your search results written in code. “Anagram” will be humorously returned with “Did you mean nag a ram?” Lesser-known Easter Eggs change the way Google looks. For example, search pages can be set up to display buttons in Pig Latin, Klingon, Elmer Fudd, and Pirate languages. Just google how. In addition, try typing the following searches for unexpected results: tilt do a barrel roll google gravity (then perform a search) find chuck norris

communication

gabrielle manuel

Communication is relayed in many forms. Whether verbal, physical, or written, communication is what ties us all together and allows thoughts, feelings, and emotions to be transferred from person to person. Effective communication is the key to having successful relationships in business, romance, and familial settings. Being able to communicate effectively and clearly can be the deciding factor in how people treat each other. For example, in a romantic relationship, a young couple may begin to argue about something menial. However, how they choose to solve the dispute will reveal much about their character. Angry words can have a lasting impression in one’s mind. The couple is faced with a choice: they can either rationally discuss the situation or yell and spew words of anger. If the second scenario occurs miscommunication will come into play, which is something that could have been avoided by being rational. Now the couple

will still both be angry, the problem will not be solved, and a new problem has surfaced. The couple lack skills in communicating effectively. Think about a time where you have been angry or having a dispute with another friend or loved one. If the disagreement escalated, did your relationship change or become progressively worse? Sometimes, if one method of communicating isn’t working, try an alternate route! If you cannot talk to the other person, write him or her a letter or record a video of how you feel, and then maybe the situation can be solved without any wounded egos or feelings. Emma Thompson stated, “Any problem, big or small, within a family, always seems to start with bad communication. Someone isn’t listening.” Remember that communication is a two way street; try to meet halfway and make peace with your loved ones.

following the fashion show, a live auction featured all of the modeled clothing. Competition quickly developed between members of the audience for select pieces. During the event, chocolate covered strawberries and other

delectable treats were served, creating a sense of luxurious escape from a tedious day. The models, volunteers from the University and community, wore the clothing eloquently and with much class.

Jim Parsons, born James Josephe Parsons, was born March 24, 1973, in Houston, Texas. His first performance was at the age of six at a school play where he played as a bird. Majoring in theater at the University of Houston, Parsons soon went on to be awarded a two-year master’s degree at the University of San Diego, graduating in 2001. Parsons also appeared in Off-broadway and was involved in the show “Judging Amy” in 2004. After graduating from

Klein Oak High in 1991, Parsons began to be involved in the theater company Infernal Bridegroom Productions. Some interesting facts about Parsons include his love for the show “Three’s Company,” his inability to ride in a car unless he’s driving, his skill at playing the piano for 14 years, and his debut in “The Normal Heart” on Broadway. His mother, Judy Parsons, is a first grade teacher alongside his sister, Julie. His father passed away in 2001 due to a severe car

accident. Jim Parsons, also known as Jimmy Pea, is best known for the sarcastically witty Sheldon Cooper character on “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS. The show is about a pretty woman who moves into an apartment adjacent to that of two brilliant physicists who need a little help when it comes to appropriate social interactions. New episodes can be seen on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. on CBS.

nelson’s wrestling ramble vi:

the death of wcw nelson sims

WCW wasn’t supposed to close, ever. No one working for the company thought that such a thing would even be possible, thanks to their position beneath the protective umbrella of Ted Turner. No matter how bad business got, there was no way that World Championship Wrestling would cease to exist. Not only did Ted Turner own WCW, but he also had a special fondness for it. Prior to their meteoric rise, WCW had featured some of the most ridiculous acts ever seen on wrestling. Robocop once appeared to watch Sting’s back during a match. A wrestler set to debut as “The Shockmaster” was unable to see through the glitter covered Star Wars Storm Trooper helmet he was given to wear and, rather than break through a wall to make an intimidating debut as planned, he tripped and fell headfirst through the wall instead. Even more bizzare, when sidelined with a reallife concussion, Cactus Jack’s on-screen character developed a case of amnesia and went to live on the streets amongst the homeless rather than plot his revenge on the wrestler who gave him the concussion, Big Van Vader. If WCW could get away with putting stuff like that on television before they had become a successful company, then they’d surely have nothing to worry about now that business was officially booming. At their peak, WCW could sell out any arena in the United States without even advertising a lineup of matches. How could things get so bad that they’d ever have to worry about going out of business? WCW’s past blunders would seem like fond memories when compared to the number of idiotic things that the company would do from 1998 to 2000. In two short years, WCW managed to undo all of the strides that they had spent three years making. Blame has been tossed around by numerous parties, both involved and uninvolved. It’s not this wrestling fan’s job to assign blame to any one particular party. WCW’s downfall can be attributed to a number of factors that occurred behind closed doors at their corporate office in Atlanta. The specifics of WCW’s internal struggles have never been made fully public, and while speculation may run rampant amongst many wrestling fans, one can only truly judge the things that they bear witness to. In the case of WCW, that would be what they allowed to be put on television, and that was often some pretty bad stuff. Let’s take a look at some of the worst moments!

1) Tank Abbot vs. Big Al On a 2000 edition of WCW Monday Nitro, former MMA fighter Tank Abbot took on Big Al. Tank Abbot had been featured prominently on WCW programming for quite a while, but Big Al? No one knew who this guy was, and to make matters worse, no one had a clue what a “Leather Jacket on a Pole” match was, either. After some forgettable opening action, Big Al climbed to the top turnbuckle and reached up to grab a leather jacket hanging from a pole, and Tank Abbot pushed him off the turnbuckle and sent him crashing to the arena floor. The fall looked pretty nasty, but not as nasty as what happened next. Tank Abbot inexplicably produced what appeared to be a knife, walked to the outside of the ring where Big Al was, and held the knife up to his throat, audibly saying, “I’m going to f##king kill you” on live television. The camera cut away and announcer Tony Schiavone assured audiences that “Tank was just trying to shave Big Al’s beard.” The only problem was that Big Al had no beard. 2) Starrcade 1997 Starrcade was WCW’s own version of Wrestlemania. Their biggest pay-per-view of the year was supposed to be the night that their best talent was showcased, and their next top star was cemented. In 1997, that top star was supposed to be WCW mainstay, Sting. Sting had been with WCW since the very beginning and enjoyed a lengthy run as their top good guy. WCW fans were fiercely loyal to Sting, even to the point of booing the heroic Hulk Hogan in favor of him. Now that Hogan had turned to the dark side by joining the nWo, a matchup between Sting and Hogan was an obvious route for the company to take. Starrcade ‘97 was set to be the culmination of over a year’s worth of build for the Sting/Hogan encounter. It was the night that Sting would return to the ring after a lengthy absence and claim his rightful place as the conqueror of the evil nWo faction and the savior of the company. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Instead, Hulk Hogan beat up Sting for what felt like an eternity and then pinned him right in the middle of the ring. Fans were outraged, even when Bret Hart emerged from the back to restart the match, claiming that the referee had administered a fast-count. Hart counted Hogan down moments later, and Sting was awarded the match and the WCW Championship. However, the fans were not happy. The bizarre ending

was made even more confusing by the fact that referee Nick Patrick had clearly not administered a fast count of any sort. All of Sting’s momentum was completely lost in one night. Starrcade ‘97 would go on to be recognized as the beginning of the end of WCW’s good fortune. 3) Same Warrior Time, Same Warrior Channel In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, The Ultimate Warrior rose to stardom in the WWF. Fans were absolutely insane for the muscled up, facepainted grappler who ran, full tilt, to the ring and shook the ropes like a madman. Warrior was Vince McMahon’s first choice as a successor to Hulk Hogan, and he famously handed Hogan his first ever Wrestlemania loss in a classic good guy vs. good guy match in the Toronto Skydome at Wrestlemania VI. In 1998, The Ultimate Warrior arrived in WCW amidst tremendous hype. Warrior immediately made his intentions clear when he challenged the, now evil, “Hollywood” Hogan to a match. Warrior issued his challenge and then proceeded to ramble on for about twenty minutes, totally losing the audience, and even Hogan. Warrior, at this point, had begun to fancy himself as something of a philosopher and had apparently decided to share some of his ideas with the WCW audience. Unfortunately, Warrior’s antics did not stop there. He began to “haunt” Hogan on WCW programming, leading to an incident where Warrior appeared in Hogan’s dressing room mirror to taunt him. Hogan’s nWo buddies insisted that there was nothing in the mirror and that Hulk needed to get the whole thing with Warrior off his mind. The only problem was that the rest of the audience could see Warrior as well. Was the rest of the audience supposedly as crazy as Hogan, or were Hogan’s buddies the crazy ones? Perhaps this was WCW’s way of saying that the viewer had to be crazy to continue watching such ridiculous antics. Before he disappeared from television about a month after he showed up, Warrior made sure to punctuate each of his appearances by promising to appear next week, “same Warrior time, same Warrrrrrior channnnnnneeellllllll!” As if that wasn’t enough evidence that Warrior seemed to think he was Batman, he also had his own “Warrior Signal” spotlight that was used to warn of his impending appearance. Unfortunately, it only warned viewers when it was time to change the channel. These are by no means the top 3 worst

WCW moments ever. We haven’t covered things such as the Viagra-On-A-Pole Match, KISS’s own officially endorsed prowrestler, or “Seven,” the gimmick given to Dustin Rhodes that had to be pulled due to its bizarre parallels with child-molesters. The story of WCW is one of the most interesting sagas in wrestling. The company is largely responsible for the resurgence in popularity that pro-wrestling experienced in the late nineties, but through a seemingly endless series of ridiculous ideas, was unable to continue its existence into the new millennium. However, don’t believe what Vince McMahon tells you about WCW for a moment. They may have done some bad things, but McMahon once made a wrestler dress up as a turkey and hatched him out of an egg on a live pay-per-view.

crawfish and funny name, good book shrimp boil “Desire Climax” begins with a girl named Mio Omari, who works a part-time job and goes to school. Since her father is dead and her mother is in the hospital, she must work to take care of her family. Mio is leaving work one night when she witnesses a huge fight breaking out and a car being vandalized. A sexy stranger recognizes her, steals her first kiss, and offers to “buy” her. She returns home with a lot of cash that the stranger gave her. After much thought, she decides to return the money to him, only to find out that he is the most popular boy at her school and her landlord’s son, Prince Shoei Jinnai, and she is going to be working as a maid in his home. After Mio hears this baffling news, Prince Shoei comes to her class and announc-

es that his father would like to see her after school. So they ride home together and Mio informs Shoei that

she is thinking of declining the offer to work in the Jinnai home. He pushes her

into a room and reminds her that he “already paid for her.” The names are Japanese, so do not sweat pronunciation too much. Simply substitute names that are possible to remember. Once this skill is mastered, reading any manga can be a breeze. This book’s twists and turns will make any reader enjoy it. “Desire Climax” is a roller-coaster of love, affairs, and secrets that send the main characters spiraling. Mio finds out what it really takes to love someone who is not really her family, while trying to hold onto the boy she loves most. Mio’s mother finds that her little girl is much stronger than she once thought. Read this book online for free at mangareader.net.

Olan Rogers was born June 11, 1987, and currently resides in Nashville, Tenn. He was first involved in a group called “Hazard,” a sketch comedy group. He is an amateur filmmaker, photographer, and comedian, and he longs to be a movie director. He loves to entertain people and to tell stories of his life to his followers on YouTube. Most noted videos include “Ghost in the Stalls” with 1,236,389 views and “Cat Pack” with 446,280 views. “Cat Pack,” an insight on Olan and his cat Starscream’s adventures while packing for a trip, allows his viewers to see the adventures of a french fry, SD card, toy, Reese’s, and rapidly thrown candy canes whilst packing. “Ghost in the Stalls” involves Olan in a Target bathroom when another man comes in. Because

the awkward silence makes Olan feel uneasy, he decides to keep quiet so the man doesn’t know that he’s there. Silence grows even more stiflingly awkward so he decided, since “it’s a Monday” and he has nothing else better to do, to let out a bloodcurdling scream while in the bathroom stall. The guy next to him slams his hands against the side of the stalls and starts yelling to see if someone is there. When no response comes, he leans down to see if there are feet just as Olan lifts his feet up, making the man think that no one is in the stall. Soon enough, the man begins to relax again, and Olan lets out another scream. This time, the man begins to fumble with his pants, storms out of his stall, and kicks open Olan’s stall. Little does the man know, when he

is fiddling around with his pants, Olan has enough time to move from his stall to the adjacent stall. When the man sees no one in the stall he has kicked open, he begins to talk to the “spirit of the bathroom, trapped in these stalls.” Settling back in his own stall, the man begins to relax again. Olan, on the other side sits on the toilet with his feet up and decides, “it’s a Monday,” he has to do it one more time. So, he lets out the loudest scream ever, this time screaming “run.” The man is so scared that he kicks open his stall and runs, screaming, out of the Target bathroom. When Olan leaves his own stall, a surprise waits for him outside. Olan can be e-mailed at olanrogers@gmail.com. Visit his website at http:// www.olanrogers.com .

what about bob nelson sims

The relationship between a psychiatrist and his patient can occasionally get complicated. In order for any type of psychiatric therapy to be effective, a bond of almost unlimited trust must be forged. One can’t be effectively treated for any type of mental disorder if he or she isn’t willing to openly discuss the intricate details of the, often personal, symptoms. As “What About Bob?” shows, sometimes that trust can go too far.

Director Frank Oz’s 1991 film tells the story of Bob, portrayed by Bill Murray, a lonesome, divorced hypochondriac who, after terrorizing a series of doctors, is dumped off on the unfortunate Dr. Leo Marvin. What unfolds is a series of some of the most hilarious moments ever caught on film. For those who find themselves disappointed with Murray’s recent penchant for increasingly repressed roles, look no further than this film for a glimpse of Murray at the top of his game as the hilariously obnoxious Bob Wiley. Bob thrives off of attention, and will do anything to get it. In his first meeting with Dr. Marvin, Bob suddenly falls to the floor, clutching at his chest, claiming to be petrified by a fear of a sudden cardiac arrest and reasoning that “if I fake it, then I don’t have it.”

As much as Bob craves attention, what makes the film so funny is that Dr. Marvin may crave it just a little more. The bookshelf in his office is completely filled with his new book, “Baby Steps.” Bob becomes a believer in the book the moment he lays eyes on it, and after a brief explanation of the therapy, he concludes that Dr. Marvin’s technique of setting small, attainable goals is a surefire cure to all that ails him. Unfortunately for Bob, Dr. Marvin informs him that he will not be able to follow-up with him until he returns from his vacation. After a few failed, but memorable, attempts to pinpoint Dr. Marvin’s whereabouts, Bob is left with no other option than to elaborately stage his suicide, dress up as a detective, and visit Dr. Marvin’s answering service. After finally learning the location of his psychiatrist, Bob sets out to join him on vacation. What ensues is a complete role reversal. Bob receives the attention he craves from Dr. Marvin’s family, healing his fragile psyche, as Dr. Marvin slowly descends into total madness. By the time a gun-wielding Dr. Marvin ties Bob up in the woods and straps dynamite to him, Dreyfuss has almost totally stolen the movie from Murray. “What About Bob?” is one of the funniest films ever made. Bill Murray manages to be completely annoying in every conceivable way, but still manages to make Bob lovable in spite of all his antics. Richard Dreyfuss is perfect as the pompous and self-centered Dr. Marvin, a woefully ineffective psychiatrist who ultimately faces perhaps the movie’s funniest plot twist of all in the hilarious ending. Five out of five stars.

why do bad things happen to good people? shawn o ' neal

“If God is good, then why do bad things happen to good people?” This question, at first glance, seems logical. If God is omnibenevolent and omnipotent, why would He allow bad things to happen to those who are good? The question makes an invalid assumption: there are such things as good people. People ask their questions in a way that questions the biblical worldview. Therefore, a response from the biblical worldview is needed. The Bible makes it clear that no one is good. Paul lays out the doctrine of man’s nature: “There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes” (Romans 3:10-18). Paul goes on to say, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The Bible tells us that God is holy (Isaiah 6:3). He is perfectly sanctified or set apart. He is also eternal (Exodus 3:14). If people sin against an eternally

holy God, then they deserve an eternally holy punishment. No good thing should ever happen to man. So the question changes from “Why do bad things happen to good people?” to “Why do good things happen to people at all?” God reveals several attributes about Himself to Moses that answer this question: “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty…” (Exodus 34:6-7). God shows mercy on sinful man because He is merciful. He expresses goodness to wicked man because He is good. He displays love to hateful man because “[He] is love” (1 John 4:16). “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8). God shows His love for people not only in their life, but also in the life to come. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

A clock with huge hands ticks the hours away steadily as a bored worker prays for time to move faster. Papers lay scattered across a desk in a haphazard manner as pens and post-its dot the surface from here and there. An enormous calculator and dimmed computer hide in the corner of the cubicle while team members hurry around frantically. Most people think of typewriters and calculators when they hear someone say, “I want to be an accountant.” From the monotone lectures in a cinder block classroom with no windows to a cubicle in a busy firm, accounting seems like a barren wasteland of a job, but that is far from the truth. Accounting offers many opportunities, and those who enter this field of study will be happy they did. Accountants help make sure that firms run efficiently, taxes are punctually and properly paid, and public records are kept accurately. They can work for companies, individuals, and government agencies. Accountants also offer limited legal advice, budget analysis, and even consulting services. Four specific fields of accounting include public accounting, management accounting, governmental accounting, and internal auditing. Most accountants work in a typical office setting, but sometimes work at home, especially if self-employed. Usually, accountants work in urban areas, where most public accounting firms and central or regional offices of businesses are headquartered. Sometimes, people with backgrounds in accounting are full-time college and university faculty; others teach part-time while working for themselves or for private industry or in government.

Most accountants and auditor positions require a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field. Accountants can seek credentials and certifications from several entities, including their State Board of Accountancy, the Institute of Management Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Sometimes, a master’s degree in accounting or a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting is preferred by employers. For more information on certification, see an accounting agent or professor at UWA. Most businesses require beginning accountants to work closely under an experienced accountant before giving them more responsibility and offering them more independence. In the next few years, there will be an increased demand for certified accountants due to a growth in the number of businesses, changing financial laws, and greater inspections of company financing. On average, the accountant with a bachelor’s degree receives offers averaging $48,993; those with master’s degrees receive $49,786 initially. Accountants usually receive benefits that can include health and medical insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) plan, and paid annual leave. Those with more experience can also enjoy other luxuries, such as the use of a company car and an expense account. While accounting may seem boring to an outsider, those who choose it as their major know that they will have plenty of money stored in their bank accounts.

During the 1970’s, Dennis Conway received a scholarship to play football at The University of West Alabama under head coach Mickey Andrews. Conway loved the game. He had been around football his entire life. When Conway suffered a career-ending injury, he went on to be a cheerleader and an announcer at the games. Throughout college, Conway held a wide variety of jobs, including picking watermelons, raising catfish, and working at a paper mill. Eventually, Conway graduated with a degree in business administration and a minor in economics. In 1986, Conway began experiencing numbness in his legs and then a month later, blindness in his right eye. Conway was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He quit his job as a manufacturer’s representative for Browning Firearms, Connecticut Valley Arms, and Shimano Fishing Tackle and opened Camp Sporting Goods in Dallas, Ga. Conway refused to succumb to MS, and he stood strong in the face of adversity as he ran the Peachtree Road Race in 1998 and also played softball. Unfortunately, many more struggles awaited Conway as he and his wife divorced in 1999 and he had to close his store in January 2000. After his store closed, Conway began to attack the disease head-on with such abrasive procedures as four months of chemotherapy. Stress is the worst enemy of patients with MS, and Conway was no different. The stress of chemo, coupled with losing his wife and business, finally took away Conway’s mobility and left him in a wheelchair. “I’m convinced I wouldn’t have made it had it not been for the support

of my parents who had helped me to find my faith and taught me to have a strong will,” said Conway. Despite his strong faith, Conway did struggle with depression for some time. Conway said, “If you change that process and think about others rather than yourself, you can heal.” This was the philosophy that motivated Conway to work with safe houses and to eventually work as a substitute teacher. While working at Woodstock High School as a sitebased sub, Conway was asked to substitute for a week in the self-contained behavior disorders classroom, and when the teacher’s leave of absence extended to the remainder of the year, he stepped in and became their full-time teacher. Following his success with the students as a long-term substitute teacher, the school hired Conway as a paraprofessional the following year. “The students and I seem to bond because they need me and I need them. They take care of me and I take care of them,” said Conway. In addition to being an assistant teacher in the special needs classroom, Conway also coaches the lacrosse team and owns a small catering business with his second wife, Leana. He also helps the girl’s softball team run an on campus coffee shop each morning. The proceeds from the coffee shop go to help students who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend the prom. The coffee shop makes upwards of $100 a day. Conway also works with the Friends Club that enables special needs students and regular education students to become friends, even when they do not usually interact during the school day

adolf hitler did not invent the swastika alan brown

Many believe that the swastika, one of most hated symbols in history, was invented by Adolf Hitler. The swastika became forever identified with the fascists when the Nazi Party adopted it as its official emblem in 1920. Today, the swastika is associated throughout the world with racial and ethnic hatred and with genocide. However, the Nazis simply appropriated an ancient symbol and changed its positive meaning to suit Hitler’s evil purposes.

embalmed biker sits astride his motorcycle alan brown

The April 30, 2010 edition of the “Daily Mail” ran a bizarre story about a young biker’s final wish. David Morales Colon, 22, was an avid biker who spent his off-hours zooming through the streets of Puerto Rica on his Honda motorcycle. After Colon was murdered on April 25, 2010, his body was taken to the Marin Funeral Home in Puerto Rica. In accordance with Colon’s wishes, his corpse was not displayed in a coffin. Instead, Colon’s body was embalmed and dressed in his typical biking gear: black pants, boots, t-shirt, sunglasses and baseball cap. Colon’s helmet was secured in the rear of the motorcycle. The undertaker displayed Colon’s body in crouching position to make it look as if he was about to rev up his engine and zoom down the street. Not surprisingly, a long line of visitors eager to photograph the strange corpse gathered outside the funeral home.

In a motion to dismiss a class action lawsuit, Jeffrey Miller, U.S. District Court Judge in the Southern District of California, recently rejected Jiffy Lube franchisee Heartland Automotive Services’ argument that restricting its unsolicited spam unconstitutionally violated its right to free speech. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act prevents companies from using automated dialing systems to solicit customers, unless they have expressly given their permission to received such contacts. Damages for failing to comply under the act are significant at $500 per infraction. The good news for consumers is that we are less likely to be bombarded with unwanted, unsolicited texts that interrupt our lives and drive up our cell phone bills.

So you’re reading a book on your iPad--that’s what you bought it for, right?--and you run across an unfamiliar word like “poetaster.” What to do, what to do? Well, you could dust off the old Webster’s and look it up the old fashioned way, or you could simply tap and hold over the word as though you were trying to copy the text and select “Define.” Instantly, you’ll be greeted by a popup definition from the third edition of the New Oxford American Dictionary. By the way, poetaster comes from Latin and means “a person who writes inferior poetry.” Yep, that’s me.

alan brown James Jones was walking down Washington Street in Livingston, Ala., one bright, sunny morning when he noticed a sign “Talking dog for sale” stuck in the grass in front of the house. James rang the doorbell and asked the homeowner if he could see the dog. The homeowner led James to the doghouse out back. “What’s your story?” James asked the dog. “I have known that I had a special gift ever since I was a pup,” the dog said. “When I was two years old, the CIA trained me as a field operative. For three years, I sat at the feet of dictators, gathering information. I became tired of traveling all over the globe, living in third-world countries, so I quit the CIA

and applied for a job with the FBI. I was hired and spent the next two years spying on drug lords and ‘gangstas.’ Last January, I was wounded in a fierce fire fight between a gang of drug dealers and the Feds, and I retired to a life of leisure inside this cozy doghouse.” “That’s an amazing story!” James exclaimed.
