Carnegie-Mellon Grant Summary

Special Collections collaborated with The Muscogee (Creek) Nation’s Historic and Cultural Preservation Department, and together we have been awarded a $677,000 three-year grant from the Public Knowledge program of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a project titled “Mvskokvlke Hofone Enfulletv Rasvwetv (To Bring the Ways of the Mvskoke Back).”

This joint effort focuses on digitizing and rematriating the Robertson-Worcester collection, which was donated to The University of Tulsa in 1931 and features many historical and language

materials never possessed by the Muscogee people. The project will also include items from the Indigenous Peoples of North America collection, assembled from a wide variety of acquisitions over many decades of archival work in Special Collections.

The grant will allow Special Collections to hire two archival specialists and a graduate student to reorganize and describe items like correspondence, photographs, and treaties and government documents. After the materials have been digitized, staff will begin the rematriation process by adding images and information to Mukurtu, a digital repository platform for preservation, sharing, and reclamation of Indigenous cultures, which will be hosted through the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and give visitors open access to archival materials.

PATRON FEEDBACK

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

I will be sure to take space in my dissertation to give special thanks to yourself and The University of Tulsa Special Collections/Archives team for y'alls help and kindness. And again, I know that others looking into similar topics in the future will appreciate the enhanced accessibility via HathiTrust. Thank you!

I found my exploration of the Ellmann archive very interesting and useful. The procedure was very efficient and I appreciated being able to consult such a range of documents in the short period of time I had available.

INSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH SUPPORT

You are a vital part of the success of our students, and we are grateful!

OUTREACH

As Artificial Intelligence becomes a more urgent discussion in our community, the leaders of Tulsa City County Library knew discussions were important, but we needed to bring in expertise from outside of our system for more nuanced instruction. After meeting Kathryn, we knew we had the expert we hoped to find! The partnership between TU and TCCL has been a wonderful collaboration!
