Donald W. Reynolds Center, The University of Tulsa
Brad R. Carson has served as The University of Tulsa’s 21st president since July 1, 2021. Having built a distinguished career in public service, law, and education, he was a professor at the University of Virginia and a senior adviser at Boston Consulting Group. In 2015, President Obama appointed Carson acting under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness at the U.S. Department of Defense. Prior to that, he served as the under secretary of the U.S. Army. Carson served two terms (2001-2005) as a U.S. congressman, representing Oklahoma’s 2nd District. In 2008, he deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom as an intelligence officer and was awarded the Bronze Star. Carson also served as president and CEO of Cherokee Nation Businesses. He received his B.A. from Baylor University and was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford. He went on to earn a J.D. at the University of Oklahoma.

ACADEMIC HOODS
Only those receiving Master’s and Doctoral degrees wear academic hoods. The red, blue, and gold on each hood represent the school colors of The University of Tulsa. The trim of the hood is according to discipline and matches the tassel color, with the exception of the Doctor of Philosophy hoods, which are trimmed in royal blue.
Among the faculty will be academic regalia in designs and colors representing a variety of degrees from other institutions of higher learning.

Global Education Veterans
UTulsa acknowledges the invaluable global engagement experience of students who have either participated in a study abroad program during their time at the university or have traveled to the U.S. to study as international students. These students are distinguished by a red sash adorned with a globe.
Students who have served in the United States Armed Services wear sashes with stars and stripes indicating their status as U.S. veterans.
THE MACE
The grand marshal of ceremonies carries the mace, symbolizing authority. It features a pewter upper portion with die-formed shapes, hand-engraved surfaces, black onyx stones, and The University of Tulsa seal. Its cocobolo wood shaft provides striking contrast. Designed by William R. Derrevere, it spans approximately four feet.
