RUNNER'S GUIDE & SUPPORTER - Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB 2025 - EN
A UNIQUE JOURNEY THROUGH ALSACE GRAND EST
From May 15 to 18, Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB offers a unique journey through time, castles and vineyards. The routes invite runners into the heart of Alsace, through the Grand Est region and the Vosges mountains, where runners will be exploring castles and villages, winding through trails where nature is beautifully preserved yet wild. Surrounded by green forests, the castles of Alsace defy time and offer a magnificent panorama over the Alsace plain, Black Forest and sometimes even the Alps.
It is a unique event that takes runners right into the heart of the rich and beautiful region. Runners will have the chance to enjoy amazing views Alsace and the Grand Est Region offers across all the courses.
The Grand Est Region is proud to renew its commitment for the third edition of the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB, which will take place from May 15-18, 2025.
Over four days, the Grand Est — with its majestic Vosges mountains, Alsatian villages and historic fortified castles — will provide a magnificent playground for trail running enthusiasts.
With five race distances on offer — ranging from 158km for the longest course to 17km for the shortest — every runner will find a challenge worthy of their ambition and experience a unique test of physical and mental endurance amidst the forests and vineyards of Alsace.
Beyond the pursuit of performance, taking part in a trail-running event is also an invitation to discover the region — its breathtaking landscapes, picturesque villages and hidden, unspoilt views.
I would like to extend my congratulations to all the participants embarking on this sporting adventure, and to the organisers and volunteers whose tireless dedication has brought this third edition to life. Their commitment is remarkable, and it is thanks to them that the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB continues to grow and shine throughout the region.
On behalf of the Grand Est Region, I wish you all a fantastic race and offer my warmest encouragements. May your experience be filled with achievement, camaraderie and enjoyment!
Happy trails!
FRANCK LEROY President of the Grand Est
Region
As we approach this third edition in Alsace, I would like to express my thanks to all the participants for your enthusiasm which has once again surpassed our expectations this year. Your motivation is a source of pride, and it challenges us to continually live up to the trust you place in us. This event would not be possible without you, nor without the commitment of more than 800 volunteers who work tirelessly alongside the organising team.
Together with our partners and the local region, we have built a true community united by a shared passion for pushing boundaries — and we are extremely proud of that. I am eagerly looking forward to sharing this event with you all, blending sport, solidarity and celebration in the heart of this unique region.
ISABELLE VISEUX-POLETTI

Each edition of the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB is a unique adventure — a story of passion and achievement that is rewritten with each passing year. From May 15-18, 2025, we invite you to experience a new epic on the trails of Alsace, weaving between vineyards and mountains, where every step becomes a lasting memory and every climb reveals the scale of your endeavour.
Organising an event of this magnitude calls for a special drive that pushes us to go ever further. We know that trail running is so much more than a race; it is a personal quest, a journey where the unexpected stirs the emotions, and every challenge becomes a chance to grow.
Here, victory is not measured solely by the clock, but by the intensity of moments shared, and the satisfaction of crossing the finish line after conquering demanding terrain and distances. The Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB is, above all, a collective adventure — where runners, volunteers, partners and organisers come together to create an unforgettable experience.
May this third edition provide a stage for your achievements, a reflection of your determination, and the setting for your most cherished memories. We can’t wait to see you at the start, to hear the sound of your footsteps on these exceptional trails, and to share this magnificent adventure with you.

As the event organiser, UTMB® Group has developed several actions aimed at preserving the natural environment and raising the awareness of all those involved. It is a collective action that includes the organisation, the local authorities, the runners and supporters, the partners, the service providers and the volunteers.
DURING YOUR TRAIL ALSACE GRAND EST BY UTMB RACE, YOU’LL CROSS PROTECTED AREAS.
We kindly ask you to be mindful of the environment as you pass through these zones, as well as along the entire route.
Here are a couple of noteworthy areas:
Natura 2000 zone - Thannenkirch: Recognized as a bat habitat in the Vosges Haut-Rhinoises region.
We’ve worked closely with local authorities (DDT, Club Vosgiens, etc.) to ensure a low-impact passage through these areas.
Deviation from Protected Areas:
Our routes are diverted to minimize our impact on these protected zones:
• Tranquility Zone protected by TAENNCHEL
• APPB - Biological site of Massif de l’Ortenbourg in the commune of Scherwiller (protected by a Biotope Protection Order - APPB)
• RNR - The Regional Nature Reserve of the Dry Hills of Bischenberg
In 2025, the routes of the 100M and 100K are diverted at the foot of the Ramstein and Ortenbourg castles. This modification follows the confirmation of the presence of a pair of Peregrine Falcons, a species classified as “Vulnerable” on the Red List of breeding birds in Alsace, by the members of the Ortenbourg Biotope Protection Order management committee.
We have been informed by the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) that the weekend of the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB could coincide with the nesting period of these raptors. In order to preserve the local ecosystem, we have made the responsible decision to avoid this area.
ENVIRONMENTAL AMBASSADORS
During your stay, you will meet ambassadors for the environment both in the village of Obernai and along the trails. Their mission is to help and support you to protect the environment and to raise public awareness.
In 2024, 34 ambassadors collected 15kg of rubbish before runners passed through. After the event, they collected another 2.1kg. Beyond their mission to keep the trails clean, they also have the power to impose penalties on runners that do not abide by the rules!
Reminder: Deliberate littering by a competitor or a member of a runner’s entourage will incur a 1-hour time penalty.
WASTE MANAGEMENT AND AID STATIONS
Runners, crews, volunteers, and staff - we urge everyone to embrace environmental responsibility.
Our “0 plastic” policy:
According to our BYOU policy, no disposable utensils are distributed during the event. Runners are required to bring their own eating utensils (in addition to the cup included in the mandatory equipment), especially if they intend to consume hot food.
Our aid stations adhere to a “0 disposable plastic bottles” policy. We prioritize the conservation of water resources and produce our own cola and sparkling water. This effort will result in substantial savings for the 2024 edition:
3,360 bottles of still water
2,280 bottles of cola
2,418 bottles of sparkling water This practice also reduces transportation needs.
Waste management:
Runners are provided small garbage bags at race kit pick-up. These are intended for waste such as gel or food wrappers. We request that all participants carry their waste, including fruit peels, between aid stations. Each aid station is equipped with designated trash cans for waste separation. The final trash can is located approximately 100 meters past the aid station (clearly marked).
We encourage runners to use rechargeable batteries whenever possible. If not, please hold onto used batteries until they can be disposed of properly in designated containers provided at aid stations or at the finish line.
SOLIDARITY
The UTMB Wolrd Series and Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB are more than just trail running races: the organization aims to merge sports and solidarity, creating an atmosphere where athletic achievement goes hand in hand with support for others. In the heart of the Vosges mountains, we are driven by the desire to help everyone achieve their own victories.
In addition to charity bibs, the UTMB CARES endowment fund supports these associations. At the time of registration, each runner has the option to make a donation.
For 2025, the following projects have been selected:
L’association des Chateaux Forts d’Alsace ELA Club Vosgien
For your information: The donation you make will be evenly distributed between these three associations.
WOMEN IN TRAIL
To promote greater equity and adaptability for women in trail running, the UTMB World Series is implementing dedicated measures to ensure its races meet the specific needs of female athletes, offering services that facilitate their participation and enhance their experience in the sport.
For this purpose, the organization of the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB is introducing the following initiatives at the event:
• The provision of menstrual products and personal hygiene items available at all aid stations for athletes who may need them.
• Separate and adapted facilities, including distinct toilets and changing areas for men and women, to ensure a respectful and comfortable experience.
• The presence of a dedicated female point of contact within the organization.

Its traditional houses, meandering canals, vibrant floral displays, exquisite cuisine, renowned fine wines, and charming places to stay embody a way of life where conviviality and hospitality are the cornerstones of a truly warm welcome.
Turckheim offers a remarkable journey through a thousand years of European history, with a heritage that is both rich and beautifully preserved. Among its architectural treasures are four iconic gateways — the Porte de France, Porte de Munster, Porte du Brand and Porte du Ladhof — standing as proud remnants of the medieval town walls. Each gate offers a unique glimpse into the town’s storied past, weaving traditions of defence with a spirit of openness to the region beyond.
Situated at the crossroads of major European routes — between Strasbourg, Freiburg and Basel, and at the gateway to Germany and Switzerland — Turckheim is the perfect base from which to explore the entire Upper Rhine region.
ORIENTING YOURSELF IN BARR

ÉQUIPEMENT
Some common sense appeals to deal with difficult weather:
Quelques rappels de bon sens pour faire face à une météo difficile :
• Anticipate both cold and extreme heat
In order to take the start of your race with peace of mind, we remind you that you must have personal accident insurance to cover any search and rescue costs in France. Every year there are runners who do not have sufficient provision. Such insurance can be taken out with the insurance company of your choice. Since 2022, the UTMB Group has offered its own repatriation insurance, which you can take out at the following link:

• Don’t wait until you are shivering to cover yourself
• Don’t change clothes in the wind: plan ahead or wait until you are under cover
• Protect yourself from the sun
- Protégez-vous du soleil
Poles: Be careful with your poles, especially in the first part of the race when the pack is dense. Do not use the straps on the downhill: in case of a sudden fall, they prevent you from catching yourself properly on your hands (injuries to the shoulders, wrists, forearms... or head).
FOOD & HYDRATION
ALIMENTATION & HYDRATATION
Fluid and food intake should be adapted to weather conditions and fortified with salt throughout the duration of the event. Maintain a good balance between slow and fast sugars.
FATIGUE AND ATTENTION
FATIGUE ET VIGILANCE
Places are provided at aid station points to rest and sleep for a while. It is dangerous to sleep alone in the wild. Fatigue and lack of alertness can be the cause of an accident. Run below your capacity (especially in the first part) to save energy for difficult situations such as a sudden change of weather.
The app is the main tool for ensuring your safety as well as providing you with valuable race information (real-time tracking of your race and that of your friends). In case of an emergency, the application allows you to send directly to the organization an SOS via text message giving your GPS position. This helps you to save precious time. It does not however mean that you do not make a call to the Race HQ. It is mandatory to have a working and charged mobile telephone that works in France. Do not set your mobile phone to airplane mode under any circumstances, as we need to be able to contact you before, during and after the race. We strongly recommended installing and using the LiveTrail® application on smartphones, which is essential for your safety.
For runners who will spend more than 15 hours in the race, are advised to bring an external battery. Make sure that the emergency number you provide is the number of the person you want to be

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT
Choosing suitable equipment is a key factor to the success of your race. Be sure to test your kit and your equipment before the big day to avoid unwanted surprises.
WHY IS MANDATORY EQUIPMENT REQUIRED ?
During the month of May in the Alsace Grand Est area, the weather can change very quickly from very hot (more than 30°C), to very cold, with rain, hail or even snow. Your equipment must be suitable for confronting all types of conditions and allow you to spend one or two nights outdoor, on the race route, depending on your speed of progress. In case of an incident, your equipment must also allow you to wait for the rescue team in sufficiently safe conditions.
You must carry the mandatory equipment with you during the whole race - from start to finish - or you will be penalized. Race stewards may check your equipment at any time during the race.
Don’t forget that the equipment we request includes an essential list of basic items that each trail runner must adapt according to their own abilities. We highly recommend you to test it during training sessions under different conditions and to carry everything you need with you.
Additional kits required depending on weather conditions
The “hot weather” and “cold weather” kits are an essential part of the mandatory equipment. Depending on the weather conditions, the organization may ask participants to carry some additional mandatory equipment items. In this case, runners will be informed before the opening of the race pack collection for their race. Each participant must then present their mandatory equipment - including the additional kit activated by the organization - to get their race bib.
Choose clothes that allow good protection in the mountains against cold, wind and snow, and therefore provide greater safety and ensure a better performance. All clothing must be the runner’s size and must not be altered after leaving the factory.
You must carry your equipment in a bag that we will tag when you receive your bib and you cannot change it during the race.
