A DEMANDING TRAIL-RUN IN THE HIGH MOUNTAIN’S DOORWAY

Elder of the Swiss ultra trails, linking 3 valleys, numerous paths, glaciers and a sub 10’000 ft summit, Trail Verbier St-Bernard by UTMB routes are designed to both seduce and challenge you.

Ever heard of Grand Combin? If not, we can guarantee you won’t leave Verbier without noticing it, whatever your race. Or else, it means that you really raced head down, which might be efficient, but not adequate on such great trails! With its Buddha-like posture, it seems to watch over the valley and Verbier the intrepid which faces it. It’ll take care of you the whole race, then give it due respect when you’ll pass by its feet, on the Panossière suspension bridge.

Approximately 400 passionate volunteers will be by your side, ready to support you, encourage you, and share with you every moment of joy, doubt, and self-transcendence. These unsung heroes are the soul of our event, ensuring that your journey is unforgettable. Don’t forget to offer them your biggest smile and gratitude, because without them, this adventure would not be possible.

Enjoy every moment of your race. You will undoubtedly experience moments of intense joy and others more challenging, but regardless of the outcome of your goals, be proud of yourself for daring to challenge yourself! The important thing is to have been there, to have faced the mountains, and to have pushed your limits.

GOOD RACE TO ALL!

The Race Management

Matthieu, Patrick, Sylvie, Laurène, Magali et Olivier

Since its very first edition in 2009, the Trail Verbier St-Bernard by UTMB has been much more than just a sporting event. It is the creation of a team of passionate individuals, deeply rooted in their region and driven by the desire to share it with runners.

This team of local enthusiasts is brought together within a race management committee, fully invested in this sporting and human adventure:

LAURÈNE SPOILS THE VOLUNTEERS AND CHECKPOINT LEADERS

PATRICK COORDINATES INFRASTRUCTURE, STAFF, AND SITE SETUP

MAGALI LOOKS AFTER THE RUNNERS FROM RACE HQ

MATTHIEU ENSURES SAFETY, MONITORS COURSE CONDITIONS, AND OVERSEES THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF THE EVENT

OLIVIER METICULOUSLY MANAGES EQUIPMENT AND AID STATIONS

SYLVIE BRINGS THE WHOLE TEAM TOGETHER WITH KINDNESS AND CARE

A close-knit team committed all year round to delivering a memorable event for participants, supporters, and visitors alike.

We can’t wait for July to share unforgettable moments together!

Best regards,

The Race Management Team

SUSTAINABLE HEAD & NECKWEAR DESIGNED FOR ANY FORECAST

ENVIRONMENT

Let’s be honest, the Trail Verbier St-Bernard by UTMB is lucky to take place in an incredible environment, inhabited by wonderful people! That’s why we are deeply committed to preserving it.

Here are some concrete examples of the actions implemented:

• Nearly 55% of the food and 70% of the drinks served at aid stations come from Switzerland.

• 39% of the food is organic.

• A large portion of the drinks is made on site.

• To reduce waste, reusable dishware is used throughout the event.

• Each runner carries their own utensils to eat along the course.

• A comprehensive waste sorting system is set up at the aid stations.

• An increasingly extensive bus service is available for runners and their companions.

• Noise impact in villages is reduced by limiting the duration of musical entertainment.

THE TRAIL CONTRIBUTES TO THE REDEPLOYMENT OF THE SWISS STONE PINE (AROLE) IN THE PAYS DU SAINT-BERNARD:

The similarity between the characteristics of the Swiss stone pine and the profile of trail runners particularly appealed to the Trail committee, which wanted to commit to its resurgence in the region. Thus, the Trail Verbier St-Bernard by UTMB Swiss Stone Pine Forest was born in 2016, which you can find at the entrance of La Fouly. Every year, the organization and several volunteers come together for a planting day—today, more than 100 Swiss stone pines populate the forest!

THE TRAIL VERBIER ST-BERNARD ASSOCIATION IS COMMITTED TO DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO:

•Preserve the trails and keep them clean.

•Limit waste production.

•Encourage the use of public transportation.

•Minimize impacts on the villages and natural areas crossed by the course.

RUN WILD.

The central hub of the event will be right in the heart of Verbier, a premier sports resort that will host the Ultra-trail Verbier X-Plore, and Discovery Trail races, as well as the finishes for the 100M, 100K, 50K, and 20K.

Le Châble, located in the valley below Verbier, is the bib pick-up location on Friday.

It is also the departure point for many buses transporting run ners and their companions.

S ECURIT Y

ENVIRONMENT & WEATHER

LThe Trail Verbier St-Bernard by UTMB races are all races which take place in open country, in mountainous terrain, with some remote areas and weather conditions which can change very fast even in early July (snow, hail, fog, heat (>30°) or intense cold (<-10°), violent wind).

Advice along the route: Do not stop at high points.

If you lose sight of the way-markers: turn round and go back to the previous marker. Stay on the paths.

EQUIPMENT

Some common sense reminders for facing difficult weather conditions:

Anticipate the cold as well as extreme heat. Don’t wait to shiver before covering yourself up. Don’t change in full wind: anticipate or wait to be sheltered. Protect yourself against the sun.

Walking poles: Watch what you do with your poles particularly when there are lots of runners around. Do not wear the wrist straps on the descents: in case of a rough fall wrist-straps prevent the suitable use of the hands. If you choose to take them, you must take them for the whole race.

EATING & DRINKING

Hydration and the consumption of energising snacks must be adapted to the meteorological conditions and enriched in salt throughout the effort. Keep a good balance between slow and rapid release sugars.

FATIGUE & VIGILANCE

Rest areas are available at aid stations for a few moments sleep. It is dangerous to stop to sleep alone in open country. Fatigue and the lack of vigilance can be the cause of an accident. Run within your limits (especially on the first half) keeping your energy for later to surmount difficult situations which may arise such as a sudden change of weather conditions.

OBLIGATORYINDIVIDUAL INSURANCE

We would like to remind you that it is mandatory to be in possession of individual accident insurance which covers any eventual costs for search and rescue in Switzerland. Such an insurance policy may be taken out with the organization of your choice. Since 2022, UTMB offers its own insurance, find out more here: https://utmb.assurinco.com/

LIVETRAIL

The app is an interface reference for your security, while at the same time giving you precious information about the race (follow your race and that of your friends in real time). In the case of SOS, this app can send, via text message, your GPS position to the organization. This represents a precious time gain in getting help to you. However, it will not be a substitute for phoning the race HQ (PC Course). A mobile phone is mandatory with the international optional activated throughout the duration of the race, with the battery in working order. In no circumstances put your phone in airplane mode because we need to be able to contact you before, during and after the event. Smartphones are highly recommended for using the LiveTrail® app which is indispensable for your safety. For runners who are going to be running for more than 15 hours, an external battery is strongly recommended.

Check that the number that you have given us as an emergency contact number is that of the person who you wish to be contacted in the case of a problem. Very important: In order to improve any medical intervention verify that you have submitted, on your runners’ page, the telephone number that you will be using during the race. You can update it until the start of your race.

X-ALPINE

An alpine and technical course with sections through glacial zones gives this race a reputation for being “crazy”! An intense experience not to be missed.

THE RACE

Start at 10:00 PM from Verbier, with the first climb up to Pierre Avoi followed by a descent to Sembrancher. From there, the route winds through several small mountain villages to Champex, then heads toward the Orny Hut — the highest point of the race (2,826 m) — set in a glacial atmosphere.

The race continues through La Fouly, the Fenêtre Lakes, the legendary Col du Grand St-Bernard, Col des Chevaux, and Col de Mille.

The passage through the majestic Panossière area is a highlight of the course’s beauty. All that remains is to conquer the infamous 1,200-meter final climb before crossing the finish line in Verbier.
