Message From The Chair

Past, Present, and Future On July 1, I stepped into some big shoes to fill. Scott Ward (and Carolee Moncur before him) built an incredible foundation for the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training. The opportunity to partner with students, staff, and faculty to honor Scott and Carolee’s legacy is both daunting and exciting.

Looking to the future, the Department can solidify its place as a national leader in the quality and value of health care education through attention to important details. First, our experience with COVID has provided valuable lessons that we must learn from. Working together, faculty and students have the opportunity to leverage technology to improve on the existing strengths of our classroom and clinical education. Second, the

disparate

effect

of

the

pandemic

on

individuals

without

consistent

access

to

health

care

emphasized the presence of health care disparities and the influence of social determinants of health on outcomes.

WHERE TECHNOLOGY MEETS PATIENT CARE Although

distinguished

their

pursuits,

the

collaboration between Bo Foreman, PT, PhD, faculty member and class of 1994 and Bart Gillespie, PT, DPT class of 2002 is showing signs of being even more significant to the amputation community that has come to define so much of their work and research.

Dr. Foreman first studied engineering, but soon switched to physical therapy when he decided he wanted to pursue a career working more directly with people. In physical therapy school, he developed a

osseointegration to increase functional mobility and the quality of life

in

who

have

extremity limb amputation.

The process of osseointegration includes two separate surgeries.

The first places an implant into the distal end of the amputated femur

or

humerus.

After

a

6-week

healing

period,

a

second

surgery places a post through the skin and into the implant, for which a prosthetic device can be attached. With a direct skeletal attachment of the prosthetic, the hope is to increase activity level, allow wearers to have better awareness of where their limb is in space, and reduce the time required to don and doff their prosthetic.

The

new

traditional socket attachment that takes minutes.

Currently,

been

placed

in

ten

participants as part of an early feasibility study and a multicenter study is scheduled to start enrolling in 2022. Furthermore, recruitment,

selection

initial

testing

humeral implants has already begun.

According to Dr. Foreman, initial results have been very promising.

With such potential and benefit to the amputee population, the goal is to get full FDA approval for osseointegration, but that is a long and complicated process. Working with a research facility, a government

PT Building on St. George Campus We’re continuing our efforts to develop a hybriddistanced based pathway for our DPT program.

This pathway would add flexibility of location for students seeking a quality University of Utah DPT educational

experience,

online

learning, in-person lab immersions, and clinical education.

working

with

university

partners and technology consultants to find the optimal

mechanism

to

develop

this

pathway.
