Under-pew heating? Taunton church lands

£18,000 boost to net-zero efforts

ACHURCH dating back more than 500 years could soon be leading the way in how to achieve a net-zero future thanks to an £18,000 grant.

Taunton Minster has been awarded the money as part of a Demonstrator Grant to help it move towards becoming a net-zero carbon church.

The funding is part of the Church of England’s national programme to help churches cut their energy use and move away from fossil fuels.

Being a demonstrator church also provides the opportunity to share what is learned with other churches, encouraging others to take important steps towards reducing their carbon impact.

Dan Wills, Bath and Wells net zero adviser, said: "We’re really pleased Taunton Minster has been chosen as a Demonstrator Church. It’s a

great opportunity to explore what a realistic path to net zero looks like for a large and much-loved church building.

"The work they do will help other parishes in the diocese and beyond understand what’s possible and what support is available to help them get there."

Taunton Minster, known widely as St Mary Magdalene Church, is one of the larger churches in the Diocese of Bath and Wells Diocese.

Situated in Church Square, at the end of Hammet Street, it has a dedicated environment team who have worked for some time to improve energy efficiency at the church.

Nicola Johnson, environment lead for Taunton Minster, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded stage one of the Demonstrator Grant. It will make a huge difference to the

work we want to do here and also means we can share what we learn so that others can also take practical steps towards net zero.

"The church is such a big part of our lives, and it too has an environmental impact. If God has told us anything, it’s to look after creation."

Under the stage one grant, the grade I-listed Minster will have access to expert advice to identify the best low-carbon heating and energy options available, alongside fundraising advice to help raise the 50% match funding needed to qualify for the next stage of capital support.

The project will focus on identifying a suitable retrofit heating and energy system for the main church building, including exploring air-source heat pumps, infra-red heating and under-pew heaters, as well

as feasibility work for solar panels and battery storage.

The funding will also support design and procurement planning, and guidance on the right time to replace the church’s existing 2013 gas boiler.

Murray Cochrane is a member of the Taunton Minster Environmental Task Force, and said the Minster’s congregation will be involved in all aspects of the decision making.

"We’re absolutely delighted to be able to support others. At the beginning of our journey, we were often thinking, 'Where do you go for this advice? How do you know what to do?', so it’s going to be great to be able to provide that advice to others," he added.

"But the support will go both ways - every interaction with other churches brings learning for both sides."

Taunton Minster will lead the way in efforts towards making churches net-zero, said Dan Wills, inset

Firearms charge

A SECOND man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a firearms incident in Yeovil last month.

Junior Renford, from Charlton, London, is facing charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life/enable another to do so, and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

The charges relate to an incident in which a firearm was discharged at the Lufton Trading Estate on Wednesday, October 1.

There were no reported injuries during the incident, which saw armed officers deployed to the scene.

Renford, 33, appeared before Yeovil Magistrates’ Court on October 20 and was remanded in custody. He will next appear at Taunton Crown Court on November 17.

A 30-year-old man from Yeovil is also on remand having been charged with attempted murder and firearm offences in connection with the same incident.

PYRLAND School in Taunton is “rapidly improving” according to a report following a recent visit by inspectors.

In April last year, the former Taunton Academy was slammed by Ofsted inspectors, who said it was ‘inadequate’ across the board.

That verdict came after an inspection in January, just weeks after the departure of a former head teacher.

In September, inspectors returned – and have now issued their verdict.

They singled out the progress made by senior leaders to improve the school since it was given the support of the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership (MNSP) earlier this year, highlighting improvements in pupil behaviour and the “harmonious environment” in lessons.

Since January, it said “substantial changes” to the leadership of the school had taken place.

“The quality of education that pupils are receiving is rapidly improving,” the report said. “The curriculum now identifies the key knowledge that pupils need to learn.

“Learning is sequenced so that pupils can build on what they already know and can do. The curriculum takes into account the gaps that pupils

have as a result of the previous weak curriculum.

“A new shared approach to assessment has been established so that gaps in learning and progress through the curriculum can be identified.”

It went on: “Leaders have prioritised reading. Pupils read daily to improve their fluency and enjoyment of texts.

“Pupils who struggle with reading are provided with effective support. A range of strategies, including a new phonics programme, has been implemented to support pupils to read well.

“Extensive external support has been provided by the MNSP multi academy trust. School staff feel that the trust has provided the expertise needed to tackle the serious issues identified at the January 2025 inspection.

“The school has utilised the

resources available to it effectively. This includes working with staff in other schools within the multi academy trust.

“Leaders feel that this had been instrumental in supporting the school to develop its curriculum and improve behaviour across the school.”

Reacting to the update, executive head teacher Mark Lawrence, said: “I’m really proud of the whole Pyrland community.

“This rapid improvement is thanks to the hard work of our staff, plus the support and efforts of students and their families.

“Pyrland is an amazing community school and these really positive comments from Ofsted demonstrate a turning point for us. I’m looking forward to seeing the school go from strength to strength.”

Eight years for man who attacked teen

FORMER Yeovil man Sam Jones has been jailed for three counts of rape against a teenager.

The 32-year-old, who lived at Preston Road in Yeovil at the time of the offending, was jailed on Friday (October 31) at Bristol Crown Court. It came after Jones was unanimously found guilty following a trial in September. He was sentenced concurrently for three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by penetration after committing the offences in 2022.

The court heard how he took his victim, who was over 16 at the time, for a night away in a hotel where he sexually assaulted her and raped her three times.

Jones, who now lives at Church Hill, Piddlehinton, in Dorset, was also handed a restraining order not to contact the victim indefinitely.

A GROUP for young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) has a new website - helping people discuss topics and concerns important to them.

The Unstoppables platform includes a run down on everything about the group; who they are, how often they meet, joining details, what they’ve been working on and links.

“The website gives its members a space to share and talk about the topics and concerns that are important to them, about their lived experiences their successes, aspirations, and the changes to local services they’ve helped shape,” a spokesperson said.

“Somerset Council hopes the launch will boost awareness of the group and help even more SEND young people in Somerset discover the Unstoppables experience.”

The Unstoppables is open to all young people with SEND, aged 13 to 25, who live in Somerset, or go to school or college in the county.

'I blamed headaches on menopause - but was diagnosed with two brain tumours'

AWOMAN who put her headaches, stuttering speech and spelling struggles down to the menopause was eventually diagnosed with two brain tumours.

Crown court clerk Elizabeth Murphy, from Taunton, said she blamed the problems on the onset of the menopause when they started earlier this year.

However, after her face drooped, scans revealed the 60-year-old was in fact suffering with two meningiomas.

She is now being monitored with regular MRI scans and is taking part in Brain Tumour Research’s 99 Miles in November challenge to raise funds and awareness.

"I’ve always been fit, healthy, and sharp-minded. My job as a Crown Court clerk requires me to type quickly, take detailed notes and read them back accurately in court," she said.

"Then, early in 2025, I began to notice small but worrying changes. I was losing words mid-sentence, struggling to spell, and my typing became hesitant and full of mistakes.

"I put it down to menopause brain fog, after all, I was 59, working long hours, and tired.

"By March 2025, I had developed a terrible headache that wouldn’t go away. I mentioned it to a colleague, who suggested I visit the doctor. My blood pressure was high, so the doctor prescribed medication and said she’d check back in two weeks.

"Then my face drooped, and colleagues at work noticed immediately. I thought it might be a side effect of the tablets. When my doctor called to check in, I mentioned my face had gone lopsided. She told me to come to the surgery straight away.

"After a few tests, she told me to go home and wait by the phone, she was calling the

hospital. I was concerned but not overly worried and just thought my GP was doing extra checks to be on the safe side.

"Minutes later, I got a call from Musgrove Hospital in Taunton, telling me to come straight in, not to drive, and to pack a bag. Alarm bells started going off in my head but I also thought they were making a big deal of nothing.

"My husband, John, was away for work in London, so I went in alone."

A CT scan suggested a possible bleed on the brain, she said, with medics saying they needed to do an MRI.

Now with her husband at her side, Elizabeth said the pair were left "in complete shock" as events unfolded.

"I was still sure they had made a mistake and that someone would say there was an error and they got the tests mixed up. Sadly, that wasn’t the case," she went on.

"I was admitted and stayed overnight. Then in the middle of the night, they woke me up and said I needed to go for an MRI scan immediately.

"I was confused and scared, worried that the urgency was because they had found something even more serious.

"By the time they came to get me for the MRI I had written

my will. I was scared and didn’t know if I was going to live. All kinds of thoughts rushed around my head. I was in total fear.

"Then they wheeled me through dark, quiet corridors for the scan. I was absolutely terrified.

"The next day, doctors came to tell me they’d found a brain tumour, words I’d never expected to hear.

"John and I were horrified, we thought it was a bleed on the brain, we never expected to hear the words brain tumour."

On May 2, Elizabeth underwent a lumbar puncture to gather more information, but it came back inconclusive.

"The same day they confirmed I had a meningioma, a type of benign brain tumour. We were told to wait for the neurology team to contact us, but that took five months," she added.

"The waiting was unbearable. I scoured the internet, reading everything I could find, which only made me more frightened.

"Eventually, my husband reminded me that we had private health insurance, and through that, we saw a private neurosurgeon, who confirmed the tumour was non-cancerous and around 2.5cm. He told us that once it reached 3cm, surgery would likely be needed.

"I finally heard from the hospital again and had another MRI, the doctor said casually that it hadn’t changed, but that there was a second tumour. I was completely shocked. Why hadn’t they told us before?

"We were left shell-shocked, given no leaflets or information, and sent home to 'watch and wait'."

She now undergoes MRI scans every six months, with doctors saying surgery will only be necessary if her vision changes or if she experiences seizures.

"The possible effects, such as losing mobility or speech, are frightening, and I’m not yet sure what I’ll decide if the time comes," Elizabeth added.

"The medication I’m on helps with nerve pain but doesn’t stop the stabbing headaches that come and go. Still, I know it could have been worse."

This year, she is celebrating her 60th birthday in Sri Lanka, and there she will begin her fundraising effort for Brain Tumour Research.

"I’ll be walking my miles, grateful for every step," she said. "I’ve already raised £130 before even starting, and I recently received a smartwatch as a gift, which will help me track my steps and miles as I go.

"My message to others is to trust yourself. You know your body better than anyone. Don’t dismiss your symptoms or let them be brushed off. Keep pushing for answers.

"I thought it was menopause, but it was something far more serious, and I’m so glad I followed my instincts to visit my GP."

Tributes to Geraldine after riding tragedy

TRIBUTES have been paid to Geraldine White – who passed away after a tragic horse-riding incident.

Geraldine, assistant manager of the Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) office in Chard, sadly died during an endurance ride on October 25.

It is understood she was airlifted to hospital in Southampton but did not regain consciousness following the incident.

Heather Giles, chair of the Dorset Long Distance Walking Association, and a close friend of Geraldine, said: "Geraldine was one of the most generous people I have ever met, always cheerful, always upbeat and very competitive whether it was in her day job as an estate agent, an endurance rider or on a challenge walk.

"She was integral to my life and I will miss her desperately.

"The only consolation to her husband, Roger, and her close friends, is that she died doing something she was passionate about, on a glorious autumn day, riding with an old friend."

GTH also paid tribute to Geraldine, praising her “kindhearted nature”.

They went on: “It is with

enormous sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of our esteemed and muchloved colleague Geraldine White, assistant manager at our Chard residential office.

“Geraldine was both a highly valued and loyal member of our firm who joined Greenslade Hunt in 1993, originally working for Will Handel’s

father, Chris.

“Over the years, she became a familiar and trusted face in the Chard area, overseeing the sale of hundreds of local properties.

"Her professionalism, energy, and commitment were second to none, and she continued to perform at the very top of her game right up to the present day."

They added: “She was known for her competitive spirit, professionalism, and kind-hearted nature.

“Geraldine will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with her.

"Our thoughts are with her family, colleagues and friends at this very difficult time.”

Work starts on new Bridgwater play area

WORK is underway on a new multi-use games area (MUGA) in Bridgwater.

The play area, at Mansfield Park, will be built alongside the current facilities, providing a space for sports and recreation, including football, basketball, and more.

This week, a ceremony was held to mark the start of work by playground specialists, Kompan, with sub-contractor Somerset Landscapes carrying out groundworks.

The project is being led by Bridgwater Town Council (BTC) and aims to breathe new life into Mansfield Park, "creating an inclusive and accessible space for families, children, and young people in the Hamp community".

The redevelopment will include high-quality, modern

play and sports equipment, a brand-new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and upgraded football facilities, the council said.

It has been made possible thanks to funding from the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Community Fund, managed by Somerset Community Foundation, and through funds from the Hamp Community Association (HCA).

Mayor of Bridgwater and Bridgwater Kathy Pearce and ward councillors attended the ceremony, with the work set to be finished by Christmas.

Tim Mander, chair of the BTC Amenities Committee, said: "This new addition to Mansfield Park reflects our ongoing commitment to improving local amenities and promoting healthy lifestyles.

"The MUGA will be a

valuable asset for families, young people, and sports groups in the area."

BTC Hamp Ward Councillors, Liz Leavy and Leigh Redman, added: "We’re delighted to see this project moving forward. It’s a fantastic example of partnership working and investment in our community."

Cllr Redman, secretary for the Hamp Community

Association, added: "The Hamp Community Association is thrilled to be part of this development.

"The new MUGA will make a real difference for young people in Hamp - providing a much-needed space for play, sport, and connection.

"Our community has been involved from the very beginning, and we can’t wait to see it open."

Music firms hits right note with The King!

ASOMERSET musical instrument maker, distributor and seller has been honoured with a prestigious King's Award for Enterprise.

John Packer Musical Instruments, based at Chelston Business Park in Wellington, received a visit from Mohammed Saddiq, LordLieutenant of Somerset, to present a commemorative award and scroll on behalf of His Majesty the King.

Mr Saddiq received a tour of JP’s retail, office and warehouse facilities, and chatted with members of staff about the company’s continued growth.

JP celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024, and earlier this year won the King’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category in recognition of the company's international growth.

It is the second time JP Musical Instruments has won

the award, having received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category in 2018.

Rob Hanson, managing director of John Packer Musical Instruments, said: "It was a huge honour to welcome His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of

Somerset to John Packer Musical Instruments, and to show him around our retail, office and warehouse facilities.

"Mr Saddiq showed great interest in the continued growth of the company, and was particularly interested in the

export side of the business, as we export John Packer Musical Instruments to more than 40 countries all over the world."

In June, Rob attended a reception at Windsor Castle, where he spoke with King Charles III, as well as HRH The Princess Royal and HRH The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise, previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, were renamed in 2023 to reflect His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II by recognising outstanding UK businesses.

Now in its 59th year, the awards are presented to successful businesses for five years, enabling them to show the King's emblem.

Museum, swimming pool and theatre among grant recipients

A MUSEUM, swimming pool and theatre are among recipients of grant funding in Street.

Street Parish Council has confirmed its annual community and strategic grant awards for 2025/26, as it aims to support “organisations that deliver essential services and provide clear benefits to residents”.

After a year which saw a record number of applications, councillors faced difficult choices to ensure the public funds were allocated fairly and to achieve the greatest community benefit.

Grant funding from Street Parish Council has been awarded to:

• Alfred Gillett Trust – £15,000 to support the opening and early operation of the new Shoemakers Museum.

• Crispin Community Centre – £17,000 to assist with running costs, including the Volunteer Driver Scheme and Soup Kitchen.

• Greenbank Swimming Pool – £15,000 to provide discounted season tickets for Street residents and maintenance support.

• Strode Theatre – £20,000 for operational costs and to help maintain lower hire fees for community groups and free-to-attend community shows and film festivals for local residents.

• Victoria Club – £7,500 to improve facilities.

As well as the strategic awards, the council continues to support the YMCA Brunel Group through a Service Level Agreement (SLA) of £32,000 per year, agreed in November 2023, to support youth services in Street including the provision of Street Youth Club, safeguarding, regular lunch clubs, and one-to-one sessions at Crispin School.

General community grants of up to £2,000 were also awarded by the Policy and Finance Committee this year to a range of local organisations, including:

• GWS Radio – £1,330

• Houndwood Community Group – £600

• Somerset Bus Partnership – £1,998.92

• Somerset Prostate Support Association –£750

• Street & District Allotment Association

– £1,500

• Victoria Club – £2,000

The authority also provides financial assistance to cover room bookings at Crispin Community Centre for the Street & Glastonbury Carer’s Support Group.

Meanwhile, applications for general community grants of up to £2,000 are being welcomed and will be considered by the Policy and Finance Committee at the first available meeting following receipt.

Approved grants will be paid within 28 days of the committee’s decision. A remaining budget of £11,565.08 is available for the rest of the financial year.

Cllr Bryan Knickerbocker, chair of the council, said: “The council is proud to support so many organisations that make a genuine difference to people’s lives in Street. The number of applications this year highlights both the strength of our community and the growing challenges faced by local groups."

The next round of applications for grants exceeding £2,000 will open in summer 2026, with a closing date of August 1.

Serious assault on carnival night

AMAN was left needing emergency surgery and facing life-changing injuries after being assaulted in Bridgwater on carnival night.

The incident occurred in Bridgwater High Street at around 10.40pm on November 1, with the victim, a man in his late 20s, taken to hospital for surgery on a fractured cheekbone and his right eye, which mean he may need glasses for the rest of his life.

The victim described his attacker as a white man, around 6ft tall, with short dark hair, who was wearing a black jacket, a hooded top, and blue jeans.

The attack was understood to have been unprovoked and happened within a large crowd of people who gathered for Bridgwater Carnival.

"We remain in contact with the victim, who has been offered access to any support services

he might need," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. "The suspect is believed to have left the scene in the direction of Angel Place, with another man who has been described as white, around 5ft 8ins tall, with short blond hair who was wearing a grey coat."

DC Charlotte Couch, officer in the case, said: "This was an abhorrent incident whereby a man has been knocked to the floor and punched to the face several times, causing him significant and potentially life-changing injuries which required surgery.

"There was a significant number of people in the town for Bridgwater Carnival at the time, and we are appealing to them to help us identify the men described in this appeal."

Police volunteers recognised with awards for their efforts keeping Somerset safe

SOMERSET police

volunteers were among a number of people honoured during a special awards ceremony.

October 26 saw the Regional Citizens in Policing (CiP) awards take place in Bristol, recognising the outstanding work and achievements of people who give their free time to policing.

Avon and Somerset Police hosted this year’s event, with Chief Constable Sarah Crew, Police and Crime

Commissioner Clare Moody and Chief Officer for Avon and Somerset Police’s Special Constabulary Andy Bennett, who also acted as master of ceremonies, welcoming nominees from Avon and Somerset Police, British Transport Police, Devon and Cornwall Police, Dorset Police, Gloucestershire Constabulary and Wiltshire Police.

The ceremony celebrated three types of volunteers:

n Special Constables: They work in uniform with police powers, giving at least 16 hours of their time each month.

n Police Support Volunteers: They help in many roles, allowing officers and staff to focus on frontline duties.

n Volunteer Police Cadets:

Aged 13 to 17, they learn about policing and show good citizenship through their service.

Somerset volunteers recognised at the Regional Citizens in Policing (CiP) awards, chosen by a regional judging panel, included:

Award: Innovation

Winner: Jay Ralph, Avon and Somerset Police For transformative Information Technology (IT) work the force said has "redefined how operational data

is captured and utilised by Avon and Somerset’s Special Constabulary".

Jay created a prototype app, which consolidated officer hours, training records, deployments, and performance indicators into a single, accessible dashboard, improving efficiency and empowering supervisors and the Citizens in Policing Team to make more strategic, data-driven decisions.

Award:

Police Support Volunteer of the Year

Winner: Ashley Reay, Avon and Somerset Police

The force recognised Ashley's efforts as the driving force behind the Mendip Community Speed Watch (CSW) Network for nearly 15 years, transforming it into "a vital pillar of road safety across Avon and Somerset".

"Under his leadership, the number of CSW schemes in Mendip has grown from just six to an impressive 37, supported by more than 100 volunteers," the citation added.

In the past year alone, their

efforts have resulted in over 13,000 educational letters being issued to speeding drivers.

Award: Special Constable of the Year

Winner: Debbie Hather, Avon and Somerset Police Special Constable Debbie was recognised for efforts since joining Avon and Somerset Police in June 2023, contributing 740 hours of service in one year, while balancing a full-time career and family life.

She also plays a key role in the Women in Policing Special Constabulary group, helping address long-standing issues such as female officer retention, and more.

Chief Constable Crew said: "Our policing volunteers provide essential support to our officers and staff; they help ensure our communities can go about their lives in safety; and they assist us in building stronger, more trusted relationships with the public we serve, so that the fundamental

principle of policing with consent is upheld.

"Many citizens in policing juggle demanding personal and professional lives, yet they still make time to serve.

"We want to say thank you to them and let them know their contribution is vital and deeply appreciated whether they’re supporting neighbourhood policing, carrying out arrests, helping vulnerable people, managing public-facing roles or working behind the scenes."

PCC Moody added: "Serving the public is at the heart of policing.

"I think this is especially highlighted by the dedication shown by these volunteers.

"We’ve seen their contributions span every aspect of policing, from supporting our officers and engaging with communities, to mentoring the next generation and going above and beyond in service to others.

"They set a high standard for us all and on behalf of everyone whose lives are touched by their work, thank you for everything you do."

Three jailed for more than 30 burglaries

ATRIO – from Bridgwater, Street and Somerton – involved in more than 30 burglaries in Somerset and into Devon have been jailed.

The three stole from homes and other buildings between August and November 2024.

On November 15 last year, Joshua Charles Heal, of Bridgwater, Ethan Paul Sharman, of Somerton, and Andrew Sharman, 44, of Street, were arrested.

After search warrants were executed in all three towns and villages, hundreds of suspected stolen items were seized, including antique silverware, paintings, furniture and weapons, as well as power tools, garden machinery and electrical items.

Heal, 25, and 21-year-old Ethan Paul Sharman admitted conspiring to commit multiple burglaries of dwellings and non-dwellings across Somerset and Devon, with intent to steal, between August and November.

Heal was jailed for nine years and three months, and Sharman for six years and eight months at a hearing at Bristol Crown Court on October 31.

Sentencing, Judge Hart said the burglaries were part of a relentless campaign of offending that had brought irreparable harm to the people and properties affected.

Andrew Sharman, 44, previously admitted an offence

of intentionally encouraging or assisting in the commission of an indictable-only offence (burglary) by providing them with premises in which stolen goods could be stored; permitting them to use a vehicle, which he had hired, in the commission or certain of the offences and when after a burglary had been committed and that vehicle crashed, collected Ethan Sharman from the scene and drove him away.

He was jailed for 26 months on June 5.

Officer in the case, PC Mark Owen, said: “This was a complex investigation by a dedicated team of officers bringing together expertise from across Avon and Somerset Police.

“The offenders targeted a range of premises including large private homes, shops,

businesses and outbuildings.

“After reviewing crime reports and building an online gallery of the seized property, as well as holding in-person viewings, we returned many items to their rightful owners.

“Thankfully in this case we were able to return property including jewellery, watches, coins, decorative china, a clock

Walkers cover hundreds of miles for good cause

MORE than 20 intrepid walkers completed hundreds of miles to raise hundreds of pounds for a campaign to help people enjoy the outdoors.

The second annual 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk saw 23 cover a combined 500 miles of the Somerset coastline.

Walking on the South West Coast Path and the King Charles III England Coast Path, the event showcased the region’s diverse landscapes, from moorlands and farmland to sweeping beaches and estuaries.

Richard Taylor and Richard Pinnington were among walkers who completed the full eight-

day challenge, walking the entire Somerset coast.

"Well done to the Richards, completing this walk in the timescale is not easy," said Isobel Pring, speaking on behalf of the Somerset Trail Partnership for the King Charles III England Coast Path.

"The first two days are packed with steep climbs, and the final ascent up the steps to the top of Brean Down demands a last burst of energy."

Organised by the Somerset Trail Partnership in collaboration with Exmoor National Park, the walk met its fundraising goal of £700 for The Outdoor Guide

Foundation’s Waterproofs and Wellies Campaign.

"Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ll be able to provide two sets of waterproofs and wellies — 10 pairs each — for two coastal primary schools in Somerset," said Isobel.

The walk began at County Gate, near the Devon border, and finished eight days later at Brean Down, on the edge of the Mendip Hills.

"This stretch of coast is a joy to walk," Isobel added. "It offers everything from gentle, flat paths to the dramatic hills and combes of Exmoor. We were lucky to have a fantastic group of walkers and great weather this year."

Next year will mark the tenth anniversary of the opening of the King Charles III England Coast Path, which runs between Minehead and Brean Down, with the Trail Partnership aiming to run the 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge Walk for a third time.

Meanwhile, plans are also underway to introduce a series of circular walks throughout the year, with the Partnership seeking coastal partners to help host and sponsor these events.

MP's call for women's safety concerns Quick news

WOMEN are being urged to detail their experiences and concerns around safety in a Somerset constituency.

MP Anna Sabine (Lib Dem, Frome and East Somerset) has launched on online survey aimed at gathering the thoughts of women about their safety in rural areas.

With the nights drawing in, the MP said she was keen to hear directly from women about how safe they feel in their communities, whether travelling to and from work, socialising, or going about daily life.

"Women’s safety is a vital issue everywhere, but it can take on unique dimensions in rural areas, where public transport is limited, street lighting can be sparse, and communities are more spread out," she went on.

"As the evenings get darker earlier, I want to ensure women feel safe and supported

wherever they live.

"This survey is a way to gather lived experiences from local women, so we can better understand the issues and take practical steps together."

Responses will help shape Anna’s work locally, she said, feeding into discussions with councils, police, and community groups, and supporting calls for better resources and attention for rural safety at a national level.

"This is about ensuring every woman, no matter where she lives, feels safe walking home, waiting for a bus, or simply going about her day," the MP added.

"By working together and listening to local voices, we can push for meaningful improvements in rural safety."

A survivor of domestic abuse, she lives with a severe medical condition made much worse by the cold.

“Last winter we were struggling – really struggling,” she told us.

She struggled with even the idea of turning on the heating for her small flat. She knew it’d ease her symptoms – but couldn’t justify the cost.

“I just didn’t think we could afford it,” she says.

Carol adds that the Surviving Winter Grant “basically saved us.”

“It meant I could put the heating on more during the day. It’s just one less thing to worry about.”

Football star postcard sells

ASOUTH AFRICAN coin sold for a whopping £2,360 during a Somerset auction - alongside a postcard featuring a Manchester United and Manchester City football star.

The gold Krugerrand coin, dating from 1976, was among the highlights at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s (GTH) latest specialist sale at the Somerset Salerooms.

Not far behind, in the postcard section, was a photographic portrait of William 'Billy' Meredith, of Manchester City, Man Utd and Wales fame, who was considered one of the early superstars of the professional game.

Meredith (July 1874 - April 1958) won each domestic trophy in the English football league and gained 48 caps for Wales. His habit of chewing on a toothpick during games made him instantly recognisable.

The postcard, which was in generally good condition, though the corners were slightly rounded, aroused a good deal of pre-auction interest and bidding quickly rose briskly with the gavel coming down at £1,700.

The next similar sale is on December 10, with GTH also hosting a timed online sale of books and collectables where more affordable items are on offer.

New section of Somerset Circle route open

ASOMERSET walking and cycle route has grown with the opening of a new section.

The 76-mile Somerset Circle walking and cycling route aims to span from Bristol to Bath, to the Levels and the Mendips, and was launched by the former Mendip District Council three years ago.

Sections of the Circle have already been completed at West Shepton, Dulcote, Westburysub-Mendip and Easton.

Now, a 1.3-kilometre section linking Hamwood Viaduct to Thrupe Lane, providing a traffic-free route for people to enjoy, has been opened.

A cycling route will be signposted taking riders along minor roads from Thrupe Lane, over the Mendip Hills to Gurney Slade and Chilcompton.

The Somerset Circle project has been coordinated by

charitable organisation Greenways and Cycleroutes, working in partnership with councils, the Strawberry Line Society, landowners and voluntary groups.

Invited guests for the opening included former HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, representatives from Shepton Mallet Town Council, contractors MP and KM Golding Ltd and volunteers from The Strawberry Line Society, Shepton Mallet Community Woodland, and Friends of Windsor Hill Tunnels.

The route was officially opened by Somerset Council’s associate lead member for active travel and public transport, West Mendip Councillor Ros Wyke, and Christopher Somerville, representative of Dinder Estate.

Cllr Wyke said: “This is an

exciting moment. The new section we’re gathering to open today completes a key missing link in the Somerset Circle and opens up a safe, active travel route from Shepton right into the Mendip Hills. None of this would have been possible without years of teamwork. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who played a part, and to all

who gave their time, energy, skills and support to make it happen.

“We live in a beautiful part of the world, and now we’ve created new ways to enjoy it and share it. This route will be loved by local people and visitors to our county for years to come. A fantastic achievement for everyone.”

Cllr Ros Wyke speaks at the opening event

THE use of fog lights is a constant point of debate among drivers on UK roads. When should they be on, or more importantly, when shouldn't they be?

And a new survey shows how the debate is well worth having - as most people use them at the wrong timeopening themselves up to a potential £1,000 fine and three penalty points.

The poll of more than 1,700 drivers, carried out by auction website eBay, found 60% use their fog lights at the incorrect time.

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) says fog lights should only be switched on when visibility drops below 100 metres.

However, in a further indication of a lack of understanding, 13% of UK drivers surveyed said they would use fog lights when visibility was less than 300 metres - again putting themselves at risk of a hefty fine. Meanwhile, 15% said they check their fog lights every month with 24% admitting they had never checked them.

And fines can also be issued if the fog lights are faulty.

Abir Tewari, UK director for parts and accessories at eBay, said: "As the days get shorter,

more motorists will be making journeys in the dark. It is important that all drivers know when to use the appropriate lights on their vehicle and how to keep them maintained."

Of the 1,701 respondents who took part in the survey, 38% said they are nervous about driving in the dark, and 75% of this group said their fears were caused by bright headlights.

A further 22% say they wish they had the option to drive less at night, but don’t have another form of transport.

RAC senior policy officer, Rod Dennis, added:

"Unfortunately, for a lot of drivers the annual onset of darker evenings coincides with another unwelcome arrival –that of overly-bright headlights that they believe make driving

discomfort.

"While most of us have no choice other than to adapt to driving at night more often as the clocks go back, the fact headlight glare is the leading cause of nervousness underlines

it’s a problem that needs tackling.

"At the same time, it’s important to remember that brighter headlights can give drivers a better view of the road ahead – so there’s a balance

be struck."

THE UK’S first Domino’s ‘pod’ store has opened in Somerset.

Mayor of Wellington, Cllr Janet Lloyd, cut the ribbon at the new pizza takeaway at Westpark 26 on Monday, November 3, with customers queueing to try it out.

Domino’s said the new outlet – the first pod-style shop in the UK – will create 25 jobs and be open between 11.30am and 11pm each day.

“The compact, modular format looks and feels like a standard Domino’s for customers, but with a footprint typically 25% smaller,” a spokesperson said.

“Built in just six weeks and weighing around 23 tonnes, the pod offers both collection and

At the opening, more than 100 free pizzas were given out to lucky customers, as well as prizes as part of the store’s Golden Ticket giveaway.

“We’re thrilled to have opened the UK’s first Domino’s pod here in Wellington.

"The response has been brilliant, from locals grabbing piping hot pizza to visitors trying the new Chick ’N’ Dip.

"This format helps us reach new neighbourhoods efficiently, while giving customers the same Domino’s experience they love.”

ARECENT High Court ruling has highlighted how financial agreements within marriage can sometimes mask something far more troubling - coercive control.

The case, which involved a £230 million settlement, showed how emotional and financial pressure can undermine free consent.

Consent isn’t real unless it’s free from pressure. Coercive control isn’t just a criminal offence - it can also invalidate agreements, and as a family law professional, I see how these issues can affect people far beyond the courtroom.

A landmark case

In this case, the wife was pressured into signing a postnuptial agreement after her

LEGALLY SPEAKING

with Emily Evans Paralegal, Family Team – Pardoes Bridgwater Office

wealthy husband threatened to cut off access to family funds, telling his wife, "You’ll end up working in Tesco".

The court found that the document had been signed under coercion and ruled it unenforceable.

This decision reinforces the principle that consent must always be freely givenfinancial or emotional manipulation has no place in family law.

Why it matters

Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements can offer valuable protection and clarity, but only

if both parties understand and agree to them freely.

In my work, I always encourage clients to approach these agreements with openness and honesty, and to take independent legal advice on both sides - whether the assets involved are significant, or more modest.

These agreements should be about mutual understanding. When approached properly, they can actually strengthen a relationship by setting clear expectations and preventing disputes later on.

Winter jasmine a real ‘toughie’

AS we adapt to the cold, dark months ahead, it’s good to welcome flowers that brave the November weather with a smile on their faces. And, justifiably, they are widely grown. Winter jasmine bears sunshine yellow flowers on bare green stems through the darkest months into February. It’s good to plant it where it is seen by everyone every day.

Not only is winter jasmine, Jasminum nudiflorum, a real ‘toughie’, but it will be happy to grow wherever it finds itself, providing it’s not too shaded. Little bits can be taken off larger

plants and dug into any unsuspecting corner, whatever the type of soil – thin poor sand or heavy clay. You need never be without it.

However, bringing a little discipline to such a happy-golucky plant only increases its appeal. It has a great desire to grow upwards but lacks any means of remaining vertical – no twining branches, no thorns, nor any perpendicular strength. If it’s grown against a wall it will need to be kept upright with wires or tied into a trellis. Alternatively, it can look very beautiful if allowed to trail over the sides of a large pot or the edge of a low wall. Winter jasmine can become

bare in places if it is not pruned after flowering from time to time. Once the spring has warmed up, cut back the long, flowered stems to encourage the plant to produce side shoots. These will flower the following winter.

There is a golden variegated form. Jasminum nudiflorum Aureum which is a little less vigorous, and the variegation brings out the colour of the flowers very well.

Whereas winter Jasmine is very easy to propagate simply by digging out rooted shoots and planting, or potting them up separately, it is important to ensure that stems of J. nudiflorum ‘Aureum’ are

Starting a vegetable plot...

THERE are countless books and innumerable websites devoted to growing vegetables. So much so that it can be quite daunting.

Where to start? What to plant? How much work and effort will a vegetable garden take? And have you got the time? Regardless of the answers, once you have tasted fresh vegetables grown within feet of

typically variegated. They do not ‘variegate up’, that is, green shoots will not become variegated as the plant roots and grows.

It is a pleasant task to keep on top of winter jasmine, and it will provide its jaunty flowers for weeks.

A little jug of sunny yellow blossom on the kitchen table will always bring a smile to the lips on a dark winter morning.

your kitchen, you will be converted.

It’s wisest to begin small and grow, rather than start by clearing an enormous area. A few vegetables planted in the border could provide a welcome addition to any meal. But it does help to prepare the places you are going to use, and to sow and grow plants that will both be welcomed by the family and be easy to grow.

Now, in autumn, is the time to clear the spaces between the perennials, checking there are no hidden bulbs below the surface. Rake in some garden compost, then sit back and browse the seed catalogues.

Alternatively, if a bigger area is required, the same preparations need to be done. Clean the area of perennial weeds – the docks, dandelions, nettles and any other unwanted bullies. Ensure their roots are taken out completely so they don’t get the wrong idea. And throw the debris away, not on the compost heap.

Try to ensure these persistent weeds don’t have a chance to set seed or you might be shocked at their opportunism.

Once the area has been weeded, the organic method of discouraging them is to cover the area with sheets of plain cardboard. Large boxes can be dismantled and laid out on the ground, robbing any seedlings of light.

By spring, the cardboard will have decomposed and the ground beneath should be ready to grow vegetables.

Seed merchants advertise their wares online from the onset of winter. Their seeds are stored correctly – not in a greenhouse with its extremes of temperature.

And they have a will to grow once they are sown in the ground at the right time or in a heated propagator a little earlier.

There is a great art to growing vegetables and success brings its own rewards.

Still time to get your flu jab...

ELIGIBLE people are being encouraged to get their flu jab.

Somerset Council is reminding residents to get their vaccination – if they haven’t already.

“The best time to get a flu jab is in the autumn or early winter, before flu starts circulating widely,” a spokesperson said. “This year we are already seeing flu cases. Flu is far more than just a bad cold. For some, it can increase the risk of developing serious lung and airway infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia or can make existing conditions worse.”

Councillor Graham Oakes, executive member for public health, climate change and environment, recently had his flu vaccination and said: “Protecting yourself means protecting others. With flu already circulating, now is the

perfect time for those who are eligible. It’s quick, safe and helps stop the spread to those most at risk.”

The NHS will usually let eligible residents know when they can book an appointment, however, people should speak to the their GP practice if they have not been contacted, but think they’re eligible.

The NHS recommends flu vaccination for people who are:

We went to the
house - here's how you can too!

SOMETIMES, the tastes of children surprise you.

While most of us would expect the little ones to utilise their TV time to watch the likes of Bluey, or Teen Titans (both quite funny, adults, if you’re listening) – every now and again, they will settle on an unexpected favourite.

For our history-loving eldest, it was the BBC sitcom, Ghosts, which tells the story of a couple – Mike and Alison – who unexpectedly inherit a largelyderelict mansion which is haunted by a number of spirits who passed away on the premises over centuries.

Alison, after a fall out of a window, has a near-death experience and as a result, discovers she can see and communicate with the ghosts who inhabit her new home – and a series of hilarious and sometimes tearjerking situations follow, of course.

So, being young and still in possession of that earnest childhood curiosity, our eldest started reading about the show in a bid to find out everything there is to know, the way children do.

Among the facts she

demanded was where the ‘Ghosts house’ was – and if she could go to it.

Mum and dad got searching online to find out these details and soon discovered the Ghosts house – called Button House in the show – is, in fact, West Horsley House, near Guildford, in Surrey. And yes, you can visit it.

It also turns out the actual house has a number of amazing stories that wouldn’t be out of place – and in fact do figure – in the series itself.

It was formerly owned by University Challenge legend, Bamber Gascoigne, but has a far longer history than that.

In 1536, King Henry VIII enjoyed a 35-course banquet within its walls, while Parliamentary pyromaniac Guy Fawkes is also believed to have worked there as a servant, and Sir Walter Raleigh’s embalmed head is also understood to have paid a visit. Yuck.

There is plenty of real-life history that runs alongside the fantastic tales of Ghosts.

So it was, during the half-term break, we took our

the place she so adored onscreen.

And she loved it. Let’s be honest, we all did.

From the minute you drive through the gates (yes, the same ones representing the boundary for our TV spirits), you, like Alison in the show, feel like you’re ‘home’.

The grounds are the same ones we see on screen – though it appears a tree was added for Pat to crash into – the rooms where the ghosts get up to their madcap schemes are as they appear, pretty much, so you can happily spend hours recreating your favourite scenes alongside dozens of others doing exactly the same thing. (Our eldest spent a lot of time lying against a tree saying, ‘I am shot!’, in the manner of her favourite character, Thomas, for example)

As you make your way around West Horsley Place, it is

clear it is badly in need of restoration – much like Button House – with work on-going to bring it back to former glories.

In a bid to help that effort along, the house – now owned by a trust after the death of Bamber – hosts a series of events throughout the year.

They are, rightly, cashing in on the popularity of Ghosts, with regular ‘filming’ days, where people can see their favourite spots and just as we did, recite their favourite lines in the library, the kitchen, or in the walled gardens (‘I am shot!’).

We were also lucky enough to see a few props from the series, including letters written between Alison and Thomas, as well as the actual cardboard cutout Button House used in the opening credits.

And yes, our eldest took great pleasure in lying, facedown, beneath one particular window. If you know, you know.
