Youngsters to stay dry thanks to donation after walkers' efforts throughout 2025
P
UPILS at two Somerset schools will be able to stay dry in wet weather - thanks to the fundraising efforts of coast walkers. Knights Templar Community Church School in Watchet and St Andrew’s Church of England Junior School, in Burnham-onSea, each received 10 sets of waterproofs and wellies from The Outdoor Guide Foundation, funded by the Somerset Trail Partnership of the King Charles III England Coast Path. The donations came after fundraising throughout 2025 by walkers on the King Charles III England Coast Path, including during April’s Watchet Walking Week, and September’s Somerset Coast Challenge. These latest donations mean three of Somerset’s coastal schools now benefit from Waterproofs and Wellies donations, with West Huntspill Primary Academy receiving sets last year. Somerset Trail Partnership representative, Isobel Pring, joined Fiona Payne, organiser of

Watchet Walking Week, to present the waterproof sets at Knights Templar Community Church School. "Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve provided two sets of waterproofs and wellies – 10 pairs each – this year," said Isobel.
"It’s been fantastic to work with The Outdoor Guide on this initiative and contribute to the goal of providing waterproofs and wellies to every state primary school in the UK." Gina Bradbury Fox, from The Outdoor Guide Foundation, added: "Every child deserves
the chance to embrace the outdoors, whatever the weather. Thanks to this effort, more children in Somerset now have that opportunity." For more information about walking on the Somerset coast, visit somersetcoastfestival.co. uk.
Dazzling display at hair and spa scoops top window prize
The mayor and mayoress present the prize to Victoria Hair & Spa
THE winner of Bridgwater’s Christmas Shop Window Competition has been revealed – as part of a contest that brought “joy” to the town. Windows across the town centre have been reflecting the festive season this month, as traders took part in the annual town council-run competition. The mayor and mayoress of Bridgwater toured the town, taking in the festive displays, before judging the winners – and a host of special mentions. “After much deliberation, this year’s winner was Victoria Hair and Spa,” a Bridgwater Town Council spokesperson said. “While the display initially impressed the judges, they were further struck when speaking with
Victoria at the presentation, learning that many of the decorations had been reused or handmade, giving the festive scene a strong focus on sustainability.” The judges also gave special mentions to MANE, Alise & Louie, and The Crafty Collective for their “wonderfully decorated windows”. Cllr Kathy Pearce, Mayor of Bridgwater, added: “It was a joy to see so many businesses embracing the festive spirit and helping to brighten the town. Every display brought something unique and creative to Bridgwater.” “A huge thank you to all participating businesses for making Bridgwater shine this Christmas,” the council added.

Let's help Maryna get a new piano
A
MUSIC teacher who fled the Russian invasion of Ukraine before settling in Somerset is appealing for help from her new community. Maryna Kalachova fled her native country three years ago after the brutal invasion by Russian forces. She settled in Somerset, alone, and decided to pursue her chosen profession in which she has 30 years' experience teaching piano. "Three years ago, I was forced to flee the war that destroyed my home and the life I had built," she said. "I arrived in Taunton alone, in a new country and a new language, and had to start again from zero — rebuilding not only my career, but my life itself, through music. "Over the past two years, I have worked very hard to rebuild my piano teaching business from the ground up. "Today, I teach around 30 students, both children and adults. At the moment, six of my students are preparing for ABRSM exams, which requires a high-quality and reliable instrument." However, she said the digital

Shoppers saddened after news of Yeovil supermarket closure A LANDMARK Yeovil supermarket is closing in the new year. Iceland, at the Quedam Centre, is set to shut the doors for the final time on Saturday, January 10. Notices to shoppers in-store say the branch will close at 4pm on that day. “Sorry we’re closing,” the notice said. “This store is permanently closing from 4pm on Saturday, January 10.” Iceland alternative, The Food Warehouse, has a branch at the Yeovil Retail park, in Babylon Hill. Shoppers have reacted with
shock to the news, which came just days after the Quedm's Dunelm store - opposite Iceland - re-opened after a devastating fire.
One said: “Very sad indeed for people who just get the bus into town then take advantage of the delivery service, as well as the workers just popping in
on way home to pick up a few things needed.” Another wrote: “Shame it can’t be moved into Middle Street but probably cost prohibitive. It’s rather tucked away in Quedam. Having said that there’s still closures there too.” “That’s really sad that Iceland is really handy,” said one shopper. Another disappointed shopper said: “This is a big loss to the Quedam Shopping Centre. With Dunelm just reopened, the mall is going to be busy and it’s such a shame for all the staff in Iceland.”

Murder charge A 15-YEAR-OLD boy is set to face trial next year accused of murdering nine-year-old Aria Thorpe in WestonSuper-Mare. The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Bristol Crown Court today (December 19) to face a murder charge. During a brief hearing, the teen – appearing via video link – spoke only to confirm his name, before being told by Judge Peter Blair KC, Recorder of Bristol, that he faced a provisional trial date of June 15 next year, with the proceedings set to last two weeks. The boy was charged following Aria’s death at a property in Lime Close, Weston, on Monday evening (December 15). Police were called to a property at around 6.10pm, where paramedics were treating the nine-year-old, who sadly died at the scene. A post-mortem later confirmed she had died as a result of a single stab wound.
Moped thefts
THREE teenagers have been arrested in connection with a spate of moped thefts in Taunton and Bridgwater. The teens, two males aged 17 and another aged 18, were in police custody on Sunday, December 21, on suspicion of burglary and attempt theft of a motor vehicle. “Our enquiries are ongoing, and we appreciate the public’s continued support,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. Anyone with information about thefts of mopeds should contact police on 101, quoting crime reference 5225357574, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Perry Street Social Club is facing financial pressures

125-year-old social club in plea for support to stay open
A
SOCIAL club that has been at the heart of a Somerset community for more than 125 years is appealing for help as it battles to stay open amid rising costs. Committee members at the Perry Street Social Club, in Chard, have launched a Save Our Club fundraiser as it faces escalating tax bills and costs – despite the government announcing a £4.3 billion package for hospitality businesses, including lower tax rates it says will be the lowest in three decades. Launching the Chard bid, a spokesperson said the club had been “a vital part of our community for over 125 years, providing a space for connection and support”. They went on: “Unfortunately, it’s now facing financial challenges that could threaten its future. “Your help can make a real difference. Please consider donating to ensure this cherished institution continues to serve us all for generations to come. Thank you.” Festive revellers are now
being urged to use the club for celebrations into the new year, while people can also donate to the appeal online via a Go Fund Me campaign. The campaign, launched by Lee Wilson, said: “For over 125 years, Perry Street Social Club has stood as a cornerstone of our community — a place where generations have gathered, supported one another, and built lifelong friendships. “Founded in the early 1890s, the club has weathered wars, cultural shifts, and countless challenges, always remaining a safe and welcoming space for local people. “Today, however, this historic institution is facing one of its greatest threats: mounting VAT bills and outstanding debts that could force its doors to close for good. “After reviewing the club’s financial position, we estimate that an investment of approximately £20,000 to £30,000 is required to stabilise operations, clear urgent liabilities, and secure the club’s future. “We are launching this
fundraiser to protect the legacy of Perry Street Social Club and ensure it continues to serve our community for the next century and beyond. “Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to preserving this irreplaceable piece of our shared history.” At the Budget last month, Chancellor Rachel Reeves (Lab, Leeds West and Pudsey) announced pubs and other hospitality venues would see relief from ‘rateable value’ calculations, dictating how much they pay in business rates, to cut costs. The government also said a £4.3bn support package for pubs, restaurants, and cafes, alongside a freeze on duties for draught beer and an easing of rules over pavement drinks and events, aimed to support the industry. “These measures show we’re backing hospitality not abandoning it,” a spokesperson added. n For more on the Perry Street Social Club appeal, see gofundme.com/f/perry-steetsocial-club-and-institute.

£15m Octagon refurb plans submitted
P
LANS for a £15 million redevelopment of the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil have been submitted. The scheme, a partnership between Yeovil Town Council and Somerset Council, would see the venue secured "for decades to come", the authorities said. The plans include major changes to access both front of house and backstage, as well as technology updates to the technical workings of the theatre and the surroundings. Last month, the two councils submitted an outline business case for the scheme to The Department of Media, Culture and Sport, which is providing the bulk of the funding, and the team is now moving through a number of Royal Institute of British Architect (RIBA) stages towards submitting a final
business case for the funding. The project has currently completed the RIBA 3 stage (design). The final business case (FBC) will be submitted in 2026 once planning permission has been secured and a successful tender process to appoint a contractor has concluded, with work earmarked to begin during the 2026/27 financial year. Somerset Council’s lead member for communities, housing revenue account, culture and equalities, Councillor Federica SmithRoberts, said: "This is a major milestone for this exciting project, it’s fantastic to see the plans being submitted and get a glimpse of what it will look
like. "This is the development of a public building, using Government money and there is a detailed set of stages to follow. It is vital we put together a robust business case. "We are committed to the project being on budget and on time, our aim is to see an improved Octagon Theatre, that has been modernised to be enjoyed by everyone from across Somerset and further
afield." Councillor Andy Soughton, leader of Yeovil Town Council, added: "The Octagon Theatre has played a hugely important role in the life of Yeovil town for 50 years. Many of our residents have grown up with visits to The Octagon being an important part of their lives. "The Octagon brings people from the surrounding area into our town, providing an economic boost for our businesses and being a place that bring us together for great entertainment – it is vital for Yeovil and Somerset and our aim is to both ensure it is fit for purpose for years to come and to significantly improve it as a venue."
Taunton drug dealer gets more jail time
T
AUNTON man William Free – serving an 11-year prison sentence for conspiracy to supply cocaine – has been handed an extra six years behind bars. During a hearing at Taunton Crown Court on December 17, the 30-year-old, pictured, was handed the extra term after pleading guilty to committing the same offence while released under investigation. Formerly of Bossington Drive, Taunton, Free pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs, namely cocaine, ketamine and cannabis, following an investigation led by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU). He was the ringleader of an organised crime group involved in supplying multi-kilo amounts of drugs throughout the south west and came to the attention of SWROCU officers in March 2022 due to his association with
Anthony Cunningham, 32, from Birmingham. Cunningham couriered cocaine, ketamine and cannabis into the region from the Midlands and is currently serving five-and-a-half years for a connected SWROCU investigation. In May this year, he was handed a nine-month additional sentence for his part in this drugs conspiracy working for Free. On one occasion, Free was seen in Taunton removing a large heavy holdall from the boot of his car and walking towards the boot of a car driven by Cunningham, where he unloaded two large black refuse sacks. Shortly after the exchange, on the M5 as he made his way back to the Midlands, Cunningham’s car was stopped in South
Gloucestershire by police and the bags, which had been put there by Free, were found to contain £264,625 in cash. A further £39,855 was found behind the driver’s seat. Later the same year, officers were able to track the movements of Free and his associates who were sourcing cannabis from an organised crime group from Essex. Evidence from Free’s phone showed that between March and December 2022 he conspired to supply approximately 58kg of cocaine, 53kg of cannabis and 45kg of ketamine and transferred around £1.6 million in cash. Three of his associates had previously appeared at Taunton Crown Court on October 3: Stuart Davey, 44, of Wellesley Street, Taunton, was sentenced to three years and nine months
Wayne Smith, 36, of Guinea Close, North Petherton, received 18 months suspended for two years, 100 hours community service, and a nine-month rehabilitation requirement Kataldo Mulaj, 33, of Romford, Havering, was handed a Community Order and 200 hours unpaid work Detective Chief Inspector Adam Smith, from SWROCU, said: “William Free played a leading role in this conspiracy sourcing wholesale quantities of cocaine and ketamine from an organised crime group in the Midlands and cannabis from another organised crime group based in Essex. “We are committed to tackling and disrupting serious criminals like Free who are intent on supplying drugs to dealers based in the South West which are ultimately headed for our streets and our communities causing untold harm.”

College goes from RAGs to charity riches!
S
TUDENTS and staff at colleges across Somerset united to raise money for charity. The UCS College Group came together for the annual RAG Day (Raise and Give) and raised thousands in support of charities sponsored by each college throughout the year. Students and staff at colleges including Strode, Taunton, Bridgwater and Cannington, dressed up in themed costumes of their choice alongside a packed programme of fundraising activities. Activities included a human fruit machine, a nine-dart challenge, Mystic Irons fortunetelling, drag racing, escape
rooms, and raffles. Each college within the UCS College Group raised money for a dedicated charity: Bridgwater College supported Anthony Nolan, helping save the lives of people with blood cancer and blood disorders. Taunton College raised funds for Stand Against Violence, a charity working to prevent violence and support young people affected by it. Cannington College sponsored the RSPCA, supporting animal welfare and rescue. Strode College fundraised for BIBIC, a charity supporting children and young people with
brain injuries and developmental needs. Andy Berry, CEO of UCS College Group, said: "RAG Day is a brilliant example of our colleges living their values. It brings students and staff together in a positive, inclusive
way, while raising vital funds for charities that support both our internal community and the wider communities we serve. "The enthusiasm, creativity, and generosity shown across the Group has been inspiring." Staff and students at Bridgwater, top, Taunton, inset above, Cannington, far left, and Strode, left
New signs to cut Bridgwater HGV traffic NEW signs are set to be installed urging HGV drivers to use an alternative route into and through Bridgwater - and cut traffic. Bridgwater Town Council (BTC) is investigating how signs could work - and how much they would cost - in the Taunton Road and Broadway areas encouraging large vehicles to use Squibbers Way rather than Taunton Road. Cllr Tim Mander, chair of the Transport
Forum, said: "The town council was approached by a resident of Taunton Road who felt more could be done to encourage heavy goods vehicles to use Squibbers Way rather than Taunton Road. "The Transport Forum supported the idea and a productive meeting was held with an officer from Somerset Highways. "While we now await some more detailed proposals, the initial cost estimate
was certainly within the bounds of affordability. "The final scheme will of course go back to full Council, but what is proposed is about changing the habits of HGV drivers, not about restricting domestic vehicles." Squibbers Way was designed as a strategic route for larger vehicles, with more details of the new signs, including costings and designs, to come in the New Year.

Persimmon Homes south west managing director, Daniel Heathcote, said: "Finalising the Section 106 agreement and securing outline consent with Somerset Council marks an important step in bringing forward up to 400 new homes in Ilminster. "The scheme will be gasfree, helping support the Council’s environmental objectives, while providing much-needed housing for local people, including 35 per cent affordable homes. Homes plan for Wells pub rejected as community campaign continues Rituals has applied for permission for new frontage at 11 Fore Street, Taunton
A
COMMUNITY campaign to save a Somerset pub from conversion into housing or demolition has received a boost. A planning application to convert the Britannia Inn, in Wells, into homes has been rejected by Somerset Council - giving a bid to buy the property and bring it back into use as a public house, a boost. It came as the group continues to welcome people to
a share offer in the venture, which has been pushed through a stall at Wells market in recent weeks. The East Wells Community Benefit Society (EWCBS) was set up nearly two years ago with the aim of buying and reopening the Britannia Inn as a community pub for the people of east Wells. Rogue builder handed 14 years behind bars after years of conning customers out of cash
R
OGUE builder Mark Killick has been jailed for 14 years after duping customers out of more than £1 million. Killick, who traded under the name Marc Cole, was found guilty of 37 counts of fraud by false representation in October after a 14-week trial at Bristol Crown Court. The 56-year-old, from Paulton, Somerset, promised customers his company – TD Cole Ltd – would be about to carry out building work for them, but after taking large sums of money, either never turned up, or left work unfinished. During the trial, the jury was told that the scale of Killick’s fraud was the equivalent of a ‘lottery win’, earning him around £1.25m. between 2019 and 2021, before a joint investigation by Avon and Somerset Police and Bristol City Council’s Trading Standards team. Killick told some customers they needed to pay their bills ‘urgently’, but the court was told he was running a ‘ponzi scheme’ and effectively using that money to fund the work for customers who had paid him months before for jobs he had not completed. He was also accused of failing to pay suppliers and contractors, increasing the company’s liabilities. Other money was used to fund his own personal expenditure, including gambling. During his sentencing on Monday (December 22), customers who fell victim to Killick’s deception explained the devastating impact of his crimes, with some preparing personal statements for the court. One victim said the loss of approximately £75,000 was ‘unbearable and is something
Rogue builder Mark Killick left a trail of unfinished work in his wake
that haunts me every day’. He said he had to extend his mortgage to fund someone else completing work left unfinished by TD Cole Ltd. One woman, defrauded out of around £17,000, said: “My husband was due to retire soon due to some health issues, unfortunately due to the criminal actions of Killick he can no longer do this.” Others had to move out of their homes for several months because the incomplete work had left their properties inhabitable. After Killick was jailed, DC Charlotte Suter, officer in the case, said: “Mark Killick defrauded dozens of his customers by taking huge sums of money from them while knowing he would not be using their money to do the work he had promised them. “The financial impact of his crimes is clear with it being valued at about £1.25 million. We are seeking to recover what we can via the Proceeds of Crime Act. “Building projects are stressful times, even when they go all to plan, so it’s hard to adequately put into words what
it’s been like for Killick’s victims. It has led to countless sleepless nights for them, as well as detrimental affected their health and future plans. While no sentence can undo the toll it’s caused, we hope they can take some comfort in Killick’s prison sentence.” Between 2008 and 2014 Killick was investigated and prosecuted twice for fraud offences relating to failing to complete building work after asking for deposits. In 2008, he was convicted under the name Killick and in 2014 under the name Mark Jenkins, which was his grandfather’s name. In the 2000s he was also declared bankrupt. In January 2019, Killick changed his name by deed poll to Marc Cole and the following month created TD Cole Ltd. He told the jury this name change was for family reasons, but it meant when customers searched his name they did not find previous press coverage of his previous convictions. DC Suter added: “Mark Killick was a master of deception who talked the talk to convince trusting people he was

a legitimate. “In fact he is a serial fraudster who took people’s money and lied to them time and time again.” Upon his release, Killick will be subject to a 15-year disqualification order, which prohibits him from being the director of a company. He also received a Serious Crime Prevention Order for five years, which will apply a number of restricts on Killick after he has served his prison term. Speaking after the sentencing, Senior Investigating Officer DI Hadley Rides, said: “This result is the culmination of an exhaustive, multi-agency three-year investigation. “We would like to thank our partners at Trading Standards for their continued support. I would also like to commend DCs Charlotte Suter, Kelly Pinsker and Rachael Webb for their meticulous work." "Their dedication in tracing multiple bank transfers and debunking the defendant’s ‘honest businessman’ narrative was instrumental in securing those 37 guilty verdicts,” DI Rides added.

Youngsters' cards spread festive cheer between generations Youngsters with their cards and below, the school carol service
Y
OUNG and old people in and around Wincanton have been united this festive season thanks to a special link between Age UK and a town school. Pupils from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, have been spreading festive kindness to elderly residents in the community in and around Wincanton. As part of the initiative, alongside Age UK Somerset, every child at the school created a Christmas card for older people living in and around Wincanton. The cards have been distributed by Age UK Somerset to residents who may feel isolated or alone during the festive season. The project followed the school’s annual Carol Service, held at St Luke and St Teresa’s Church, when pupils led the service through readings and carol singing, supported by families and staff.
After the service, families gathered in the church rooms for refreshments provided by the school’s PTFA. Danuta Girton and Sheila Loftus, headteachers at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, said: "This partnership with Age UK Somerset has given our children a meaningful way to show
kindness and compassion at Christmas. "They have really thought about how their words and artwork could brighten someone’s day, and we are very proud of the care they have shown for our wider community." Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational
Trust, added: "Working with organisations such as Age UK Somerset helps our schools make a real difference beyond the classroom. "This project is a wonderful example of how small actions, led by young people, can have a powerful impact on the wellbeing of others at such an important time of year."

Firefighters tackle fire in barn after straw ignited
FIREFIGHTERS from three Somerset stations were sent to tackle a blaze in a barn. The incident, reported at around 4.35pm on Tuesday, December 23, occurred in Stogursey and involved a barn of m Dorchester straw catching fire. Fire crews from Taunton, Bridgwater, and Nether Stowey were sent to the scene, a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said. "Firefighters tackled a fire within an agricultural barn affecting straw," they added. "Crews used drag forks, breathing apparatus, and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire along with the farmer, who assisted with the use of a telehandler to remove straw. "The fire was caused accidentally."

Honorary Alderwoman nod for Christine
M
ORE than three decades of public service has led to a former Somerset Councillor being recommended for a special civic award. Christine Lawrence has been nominated as an Honorary Alderwoman by Somerset Council, recognising her “outstanding and dedicated service to local government and the communities of West Somerset”. The proposal was agreed by the council in September, making an exception to its usual Honorary Alderman and Alderwoman Scheme, enabling Mrs Lawrence’s nomination to be considered now rather than waiting for the next elections in 2027. Honorary Alderman or woman status is handed to individuals who have rendered eminent services as past members and are no longer serving. Mrs Lawrence served both as a town and district councillor

career, Mrs Lawrence has held several key roles, including being the first female chair of Somerset County Council (2015), the first portfolio holder for public health following its transfer from the NHS to the local authority in 2013, the first chair of the Health and WellBeing Board, a cabinet Member
for Adult Social Care and more. Honorary Alderman appointments are lifetime honours, with recipients presented with a Certificate of Conferral and a Badge of Office, and invited to participate in civic ceremonial events. Mrs Lawrence said: “I would like to thank the council, the parish councils I worked with for many years and my communities for their kind words regarding my role as a former councillor and for the privilege of being appointed as an Alderwoman of Somerset Council.” Councillor Mike Best, chair of the authority, added: “Christine Lawrence’s long and distinguished career in public service stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to the people and communities of West Somerset. “Over more than three decades, Christine has served with integrity, compassion, and a deep understanding of the needs of her constituents.”
Tesco shoppers donate thousands of meals SOMERSET shoppers donated more than 16,000 meals'-worth of food as part of a winter collection. Tesco stores across the county collected donations from customers as part of the supermarket giant's Tesco Winter Food Collection. A total of 16,949 meals could be made from the donations in Somerset, made between November 24 and 29 at superstores and Express outlets, with hundreds of volunteers helping at the stores in the run-up to the festive holidays. All donations were passed to the charities FareShare and Trussell, who said they were expecting to give out an emergency food parcel every 10 seconds this winter to meet the need. Tesco UK CEO, Ashwin
Prasad, said: "As ever, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of Tesco customers who have shown how much they value the hard work of our partners Trussell and FareShare in their local communities. "I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and made this such a special event in stores. Every single item donated really helps to make a huge impact in communities supported by Trussell and FareShare."
Donations to Trussell help food banks to provide emergency food parcels to people who cannot afford the essentials, while donations to FareShare support frontline local charities in their communities. Kris Gibbon-Walsh, FareShare chief executive, said: "Once again, the generosity of Tesco customers at the Winter Food Collection has been humbling. "At a time when many people are forced to choose between keeping warm and eating, demand for these local charities’ services is higher than ever. The food that we can provide thanks to the Winter Food Collection makes a real difference, helping to bring people together, strengthen communities and support those in need.
"Thank you to every single person that donated an item of food, topped up their shopping bill or generously gave their time to volunteer in store. Your support will help provide a meal for someone facing hardship this winter, enable them to connect with other vital services, and make a positive difference. Thank you." Matthew van Duyvenbode, co-chief executive of Trussell, said: "We are so grateful to Tesco for supporting our community of food banks through the coldest season by organising the annual Winter Food Collection. "Crucially, it’s thanks to you – Tesco customers – who donate food and money so generously. Thank you for your kindness. When we all play our part, we can end hunger for good."

Get a-wassailing to herald 2026 harvest!
A
NEW year is with us - so a-wassailing we go! Details of the fourth annual Weylands Wassail, in Frome, have been revealed with the gathering set to take place on Sunday, February 8, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The event, in the community orchard, promises familyfriendly craft activities, making willow crowns and wassail sticks, alongside hot mulled cider and apple juice to ward off the cold. Ceremonies will start at 2.30pm, led by performers Annabelle Macfadyen and Simon Blakeman, with everyone invited to join them in making noise to ‘wake the orchard’ and ‘toast the trees’. The Frome Street Bandits will round off the day with a musical performance until 3.30pm. Entrance to the wassail is free, although donations to the
community groups providing activities are welcome. Refreshments are on sale throughout the event; cider and toast for the trees as part of the wassail ceremony are provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring pots, pans and spoons to bang during the wassail ceremony. Annabelle said: "The Wassail is a lovely midwinter community event where children and adults participate in an ancient tradition of wassailing the apple trees in the orchard. "We need to wake the trees from their winter sleep by making a lot of noise with pots and pans and then make offerings of toast and cider to ensure a good harvest. "Once the trees are blessed in this way, we celebrate them in song with a cup of mulled cider or apple juice in hand." Charly Le Marchant, who
produces the Wood for the Trees film series and brought the wassail to Weylands with Annabelle, added: "The tradition of the Wassail is to come out in midwinter, sometime after Christmas and bless the spirits of the fruit trees with music, cider and toast and encourage a fruitful harvest that
year. "But also it is an excuse to give everyone a chance to get out of their homes in the miserable depths of winter and remind us of the friends and the community around us." The tree planting at Weylands was designed and organised by Charly and Pavla of Hejgro and planted with help from FROGs and Shared Earth and FTC and community volunteers. Mayor of Frome Anita Collier said: "The wassail has become one of Frome’s favourite community events despite the chilly time of year, the mood is far from it. "Come and enjoy the ‘village green’ from 1.30pm and then help ensure a bountiful harvest with the wassail ceremony. "Many thanks to Charly, Annabelle, Simon and everyone who works so hard to make it such a fantastic day."

Red Brick Building's fate to be decided in coming weeks...
The fallout continues from the ill-fated Life Factory project in Glastonbury
B
OSSES at Glastonbury’s Red Brick Building say the future of the site will be “decided within the next few weeks” as the fallout over the failed Life Factory project continues. The Red Brick Building, a venue and community hub, took on a role in charge of the Life Factory scheme, funded as part of the Glastonbury Town Deal, which saw the town handed more than £20 million for projects. However, the scheme fell into financial jeopardy amid failures to secure match funding and a lack of oversight, including by Somerset Council – which was responsible for monitoring the money. The issues continue to be analysed and investigated – including by Avon & Somerset Police – and the fallout has intensified, with Somerset Council seeking to claw back money it handed to the project leaders. As a result, the authority terminated funding for the Life Factory – and the associated Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre, so overseen by a Red Bricklinked company.
Now, in a lengthy statement laying out an immediate future that will “determine whether this long-standing community asset can continue to operate, or whether it will be forced to close”, the Red brick Building has spoken out about the Life Factory saga – and what could happen next. It says it comes amid problems over “misinformation and the complexity of events”, with the group prevented from speaking previously due to confidentiality agreements amid allegations some of Somerset Council’s own communications had caused “confusion and fear”. However, the council said it was working with the Red Brick Building Board to secure a way forward - but was seeking to recoup funds, which is a legal responsibility. Here is the Red brick Building statement in full: “The future of the Red Brick Building will be decided within the next few weeks. An independent financial review is underway, alongside a series of critical meetings at Somerset Council that will determine whether this long-standing

community asset can continue to operate, or whether it will be forced to close. Until recently we have been bound by confidentiality obligations under the Glastonbury Town Deal Fund Agreement and were therefore unable to speak publicly about events relating to the Life factory project. We also wanted to ensure the organisation was not jeopardised while we worked to resolve the issues. However, two weeks ago, a Somerset County Councillor (sic) visited the Red Brick Building to meet staff and tenants – many of whom now face the loss of their workspaces, roles, and livelihoods. That visit prompted the need to set out, clearly and publicly, how we arrived at this point. Given the scale of misinformation and the complexity of events, we believe it is essential to explain what has happened, what is at risk, and what the closure of the Red Brick Building would mean for Glastonbury. Background: A Thriving Community Hub
Before the Glastonbury Town Deal-funded Life Factory project began to impact our organisation, the Red Brick Building was a busy, stable, and successful community centre. We delivered: n Community outreach programmes n An active community garden n Community-led initiatives, workshops and courses n Affordable desk and office space for local businesses n Artisan and maker spaces n Music and arts events as the largest venue of its kind locally n A popular restaurant and bar n A thriving youth club n Work experience placements for students and volunteer opportunities n A wide range of grassroots activities led by volunteers and local partners The centre was vibrant, financially stable, and operating confidently within its organisational capacity. The Life Factory Project: A Separate Project The Life Factory project was a Glastonbury Town Deal initiative focused on regenerating the derelict section

somersetleveller.co.uk of building known as ‘Building C’. It was developed and delivered by a separate project team, with its own structure, budget, and operational focus. While the Life Factory team initially attempted to break away from the Red Brick Building Centre’s governance and operate independently, they later rejoined in order to access the Glastonbury Town Deal funding; funding that required formal governance, and was awarded to the Life Factory project in part due to Red Brick Building’s positive reputation. It is important to be absolutely clear: the only shared element between the Life Factory project and the existing Red Brick Building community centre was a common Board of Directors. Day-to-day operations, staffing, budgets, and core community activity were otherwise distinct. The Board acknowledges that oversight and decision-making were not as strong as they should have been right from the start and takes responsibility for governance decisions. Directors raised concerns early about their capacity to manage a project of this scale and complexity, and requested support from Mendip District Council. Subsequent audit reporting has highlighted significant weaknesses in Somerset Council’s oversight as the Accountable Body. The pressures created by the Life Factory project were huge. This was particularly evident during the prolonged and abrupt pause in funding, while Red Brick Building’s Board of Directors conducted their own internal investigations and an external audit took place. Responsibility for this fell heavily on the whole Red Brick Building organisation. Staff time, Board capacity, financial oversight, and operational resources were repeatedly diverted from the existing community centre to support a project that was never designed or resourced to be absorbed into the core organisation. When funding for the Life Factory project was paused, Red

Brick Building Centre had no choice but to use all available financial reserves from the existing community centre to pay Life Factory staff wages and contractors for work already completed. The pause in funding was expected to last three months, and the decision to use reserves in this way was based on assurances that funding would resume and thus reserves would be replenished. As a Community Benefit Society and responsible employer, the Red Brick Building organisation had legal and ethical obligations to meet certain commitments associated with the Life Factory. The financial consequences of this were not adequately acknowledged or mitigated by Somerset Council. Funding never resumed and the Life Factory project ceased. This resulted in severe financial impact on the Red Brick Building organisation. As a result, there is now a very strong likelihood that the fallout from the Life Factory project will lead to the closure of both the long-standing Red Brick Building community centre and the Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre project.
project began, it has placed sustained strain on the Red Brick Building community centre in the following ways: n Operational resources: A live construction site made it difficult for staff and tenants to work safely and for the organisation to sustain incomegenerating activity. n Staff capacity: A small, largely part-time staff team was stretched far beyond contractual roles while dealing with ongoing fallout from the Life Factory operations. n Board capacity: Directors were required to navigate a highly complex grant programme well outside their usual remit, with minimal practical external support despite repeated requests for specific training and guidance. n Finances: During an extended pause in funding – initially communicated as lasting three months – Red Brick Building exhausted all financial reserves to cover Life Factory wages and contractor costs, leaving the organisation financially exposed as the pause continued. n Tenant stability: Disruption caused by the Life Factory project contributed directly to the loss of our anchor tenant, The Old Tannery.
Impact on the Organisation
Clawback Request and Escalating Financial Risk
Since the Life Factory
Somerset Council, as the Accountable Body for the Glastonbury Town Deal funding, has now issued a potential clawback request for the full grant amount. This request also includes funding linked to the Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre project, which is a project currently thriving and delivering its agreed outcomes. News of the potential clawback request, combined with sustained negative and often inaccurate media coverage, has had a devastating effect on the existing community centre. We have lost key tenants, have had to navigate cancelled bookings and events, and been forced to halt future plans – further reducing income at a time when the organisation is already under extreme pressure. Red Brick Building Centre does not have the financial capacity to repay this sum. The Board has therefore been preparing for the possibility of insolvency. An emergency independent financial assessment is currently underway. What Closure Would Mean The closure of the Red Brick Building community centre would displace: n Many local small

News Analysis businesses and social enterprises who rent workspaces. n A dedicated team of passionate staff and volunteers. n Long-term regular room hirers who rely on the community spaces to run their livelihoods. n Community members supported through our ongoing initiatives, including: Weekly community wellbeing support sessions in collaboration with Glastonbury Mental Health Network. The Red Brick Building Community Garden, supporting people experiencing mental health challenges, homelessness, and isolation. Local musicians and students who use the Event Space at low or no cost. Our flagship Morlands and Bailey’s heritage project, bringing former factory workers together for a monthly reunion, preserving local history and engaging schools. As one tenant explained: “The Red Brick wasn’t just a venue for me – it became integral to my livelihood and my creative practice. I can’t simply pick up what I do and move it elsewhere. This building was right structurally, creatively, and in terms of trust. Losing it means losing a way of working that can’t easily be replaced.” The Human Cost Our small staff team has worked under immense and prolonged strain. Alongside operational pressures, staff and volunteers have been deeply affected by rumours and misinformation circulating publicly. A minority of voices, sadly including some individuals in community-facing roles, have repeatedly criticised and undermined the organisation using hearsay or unsubstantiated claims, often failing to distinguish between the Life Factory project and the longstanding Red Brick Building community centre. Throughout this period, the Board and staff have not engaged publicly or defensively to public
commentary, despite the personal and emotional toll. Rumours have also circulated regarding financial impropriety. We can confirm that no staff, trustees, or directors of Red Brick Building have been approached about any investigation into this. As one long-term hirer described: “The people who stayed – staff, tenants, hirers, small businesses – are not the villains in this story. Most of the current team and Board have only been in place in recent years, quietly trying to salvage what they could. None of us caused this, yet we are the ones who have lost the most.” This has caused significant distress, eroded morale, and damaged reputation at a time when the organisation most needed community support. What the Community Has Achieved Despite these challenges, the Red Brick community has continued to deliver an extraordinary range of activity over recent years, including: An RHS award-winning community garden praised for inclusivity and outreach. Heritage focus, outreach and activities through the Morlands and Bailey’s project. Some fabulous and wideranging music, cultural, and arts events in the area’s largest venue. Youth work in partnership with the YMCA, including youth music, heritage events and college work experience placements. Regular mental health and community drop-in sessions in collaboration with Glastonbury Mental Health Network. Many hours of committed volunteer time that has gone into the Farm project. An active jazz scene, and local musicians, young DJs, artists and students supported. Exhibitions, markets, and volunteering opportunities. Low-cost workspaces fostering networking and support for local businesses.
somersetleveller.co.uk Creative spaces for artisans and low-cost community spaces for regular classes, workshops and courses. “At its height, the Red Brick was genuinely multi-functional – a place where culture, creativity, conversation, and community overlapped. People who might never otherwise have crossed paths came, stayed, and belonged. That period matters, because it shows that the Red Brick was capable of.” – long term user of the building. Our Current Position We are now at a critical point. Income has dropped sharply. Our reputation has been seriously damaged – not only by the situation itself, but by inaccurate or misleading narratives circulating publicly. In some cases, Somerset Council’s own communications have contributed to confusion and fear, leaving staff and tenants feeling unprotected and misrepresented. It is important to state clearly that the Glastonbury Town Deal Life Factory project did not merely stretch the organisation – it exhausted it. A Final Opportunity Despite everything, over the last few months, Red Brick Building Centre developed a fully-costed recovery plan, including an approved emergency funding package. This could enable the existing community centre to stabilise and rebuild, and allow Red Brick Building Centre to repay debts that have accrued as a direct result of pressures arising from the Life Factory project. However, timing is now critical. Our final hope rests on the conclusion of the independent financial assessment, and on Somerset Council choosing to act in the best interests of the community by: n Not enforcing a full clawback on project that should not have proceeded without
stronger due diligence, impact assessment, and oversight. n Recognising the distinction between the failed Life Factory project and the long-standing Red Brick Building community centre. n Supporting – rather than dismantling – a community asset that has successfully served Glastonbury, Street and surrounding areas for over a decade. n Working to secure the farmland for the Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre project and to re-start its funding. The farmland is an asset of Red Brick Building Centre, and therefore at risk of being sold if insolvency is determined. Without significant intervention, the cessation of the funding for the Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre project puts their staff team at immediate risk of losing their work and livelihoods. As one long-standing tenant put it: “This isn’t about blaming those who stayed and tried to hold things together. It’s about recognising who paid the price when governance failed, communication broke down, and oversight didn’t intervene in time. The damage has been done quietly, to livelihoods and to a community.” We await the conclusion of our independent financial assessment, and continue to do everything we can to save this long-standing community asset that has served the local community for so many years." A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: “We have lodged a claim with the Red Brick Centre Ltd to recover the public money that was allocated as we have a legal duty of best value we must comply with. "We are working at pace with the Red Brick Building Centre Board to try and understand their financial position and sustainability and the implications of any recovery action, in all its aspects. "Once we have that agreed understanding we will be able to understand any potential next steps.”

Two shops closed and illegal goods seized
T
WO shops in Taunton have closed after illegal tobacco and vapes were found on the premises. Taunton Market and Top Market, at 80 and 73 Station Road respectively, were both targeted by test purchases and visits from Trading Standards officers - as well as tobacco detection dogs - since July this year. Now, both have been handed three-month closure orders after a hearing at Taunton Magistrates' Court in December, Trading Standards said. Illegal tobacco and vapes were taken from both premises. In July, 12,000 cigarettes, 2.5kg of tobacco and almost 1,000 vapes were discovered in a rear room at Top Market, accessed via a concealed door in the wall display panelling. And a revisit just two months later revealed further illegal products being kept in the same room.
Trading Standards Service, said: "We are pleased to have worked with Avon and Somerset Police as part of this operation. "Combatting the supply of illegal tobacco and vapes is a high priority for us. "By taking these products off the streets, we’re able to help protect our communities as well as supporting those businesses on the high street that trade legally." Following the closure order for Taunton market being implemented, Avon & Somerset PC Lydia Shipton said: "The illegal sale of items has been ongoing for a significant period of time, and we’ve worked closely with our partners, including Trading Standards, to make sure we had a strong case to put before the court. "We hope the closure of this premises reassures the community that we take action against those that harm our communities."
Some of the illicit items seized from a shop in Taunton by police and Trading Standards
The seized products had a street value of more than £20,000. At Taunton Market in July, more than 35,000 cigarettes, 6.5kg of tobacco and 540 vapes were seized from an associated flat. And in September, a vehicle linked with the premises was intercepted delivering tobacco products to the shop, with 10,260 cigarettes, 2.5kg of tobacco and 84 vapes seized.
In total, seizures associated with Taunton Market were estimated to have a street value of almost £30,000. In both cases, Taunton Magistrates were satisfied the closure of the retail and associated residential premises was necessary to prevent further criminal activity from taking place in relation to the sale of illegal tobacco. Recycle unwanted tech in new year!
Donate IT will be in Frome at the end of January
A
NYONE with redundant digital devices after Christmas can hand them in for recycling and reuse at an event in Frome. Somerset charity Donate IT will be at Frome Town Hall on Saturday, January 31, collecting unwanted tech such as smartphones, laptops, consoles or desktop computers. The unwanted digital devices can be dropped off between 10am and 1pm, when they will be securely wiped of all data and either donated to someone in need or disposed of responsibly within the UK. Simon Barfoot founded Donate IT in 2021, in partnership with Sarah Dyke,

now the MP for Glastonbury and Somerton. The charity recently handed out the 2,000th device and now have 50 drop-off points across Somerset, including at Frome Town Hall. Frome Town Council collects devices for Donate IT all year round, and hosts two tech amnesties each year. Simon said: "Did you receive a new laptop, tablet, smartphone or console for Christmas? So many old devices end up forgotten in drawers – yours doesn’t have to. "We can refurbish your old device, wipe it of all your personal data and give it to someone who needs it.
"We work with the isolated, elderly, people in rehab, domestic violence charities, displaced people: anyone struggling to have a good quality of life because they can’t get connected. "And if your device can’t be donated, it can still be useful; we’ll arrange for the precious metals inside to be recycled and used for new devices." Cllr Anne Hills added: "The Donate IT team do such a brilliant job. In addition to the environmental benefit of reusing tech devices, we know that many people in our town feel excluded from participation with the digital world because of the cost.
"Getting a repurposed smartphone or tablet, plus training, free of charge, opens up opportunities for people who want to gain digital confidence, making appointments, finding work, researching the things that interest them, communicating with friends and family and much more." The Donate IT team will be in the car park at Frome Town Hall, off Park Road, from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, January 31. In the case of bad weather, the collection will move indoors and the route will be clearly signposted. Devices can also be dropped off to Frome Town Hall throughout the year.
Police issue public CCTV appeal after assault in Taunton POLICE want to trace this person in connection with an incident in Taunton in which a woman was struck in the face. She is now recovering at home," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. "We believe the woman (pictured right) may
be able to aid us in our enquiries. "She is described as white, approximately 5ft 5ins tall, of medium build, with long pink hair which was tied up in a bun. She is wearing a grey jumper, dark-coloured leggings and carrying a purple bag. CCTV and local enquiries have been completed and we are now in a position to ask the public for help." Anyone who recognises the person pictured, or has any information, should contact police on 101 and give the reference number 5225268161.

Have your say over where new EV chargers are installed in Somerset as part of rollout
P
EOPLE are being encouraged to suggest locations for electric vehicle chargers in Somerset - being installed as part of a multi million-pound project. Somerset Council has secured £3.78 million in government capital funding to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the county – and residents are being invited to help shape where new chargepoints are installed. The funding will support the installation of at least 1,606 low-powered public chargepoint sockets (3.5kW and 7kW) in on-street and car park locations. They will be designed for overnight and long-stay charging, targeting residents who do not have off-street parking and are unable to install a chargepoint at home. A preferred supplier, which will be announced shortly, has been selected, although not in contract yet, the council said, and will be responsible for the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of the network. The operator will invest at least 60% of the total project cost, in addition to the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI). The concession contract will
People are being urged to have their say over where new EV charging points are installed in Somerset
be in place for 17 years and installations will be completed within the first two years. Now, people are being encouraged to suggest locations for charging points that meet the criteria - such as being near homes, on smaller roads, or in places that attract high footfall. Suggested locations will then be reviewed against initial assessment criteria, including pavement width, road safety and access to power supply.
Gritter names poll
THE shortlist of entries for the naming of new gritters set to hit Somerset roads this winter has been revealed – and there are some great suggestions. School pupils across the county were asked to submit their ideas for names for the new vehicles, part of the Somerset Council and Keir fleet. Social media users were asked to vote for their two favourites from a shortlist of six by Christmas Eve, which were: Gritney Spears, Ever-grit-ch Explorer, True Grit, Grit-asaurus, Salty the Snowman, and Basil Salty. It comes after last year saw Gritty Gritty Bang Bang and Spready Mercury roll out on to Somerset roads following suggestions by county school children.
Charging points will be installed on land owned by Somerset Council or adopted by the Highways Authority only, with final approval needed from the council’s project team before any installation takes place. Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and waste services, said: "Expanding access to electric vehicle charging is a vital step in supporting residents to make
the switch to cleaner, greener transport. "This investment will help ensure people across Somerset, particularly those without off-street parking, have access to reliable and convenient charging close to where they live. By inviting residents to suggest locations, we’re making sure new chargepoints are installed where they will make the biggest difference to local communities."

Somerset MPs welcome u-turn over inheritance tax for farmers
MP Rachel Gilmour has called for more action to help farmers after the inheritance tax u-turn
F
ARMERS’ long-standing opposition to Inheritance Tax changes has been victorious – with the Government u-turning on the policy. The Labour administration has announced a planned threshold for farmers to pay inheritance tax – proposed for estates worth more than £1 million – has been increased to £2.5m, with married couples now able to pass on estates worth up to £5m between them, without incurring the tax. It comes after months of protests by the farming industry and opposition MPs. Announcing the change, Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds (Lab, Wycombe), said: “We have listened closely to farmers across the country and we are making changes today to protect more ordinary family farms. “It’s only right that larger estates contribute more, while we back the farms and trading businesses that are the backbone of Britain’s rural communities.” In Somerset, the move was welcomed by county MPs, including Rachel Gilmour (Lib Dem, Minehead & Tiverton), who said: “Punch-and-Judy politics doesn’t deliver – constructive opposition does.
“By listening to farmers and £1m to £2.5 million is a step in working constructively with the right direction, but it should organisations such as the NFU never have required this level of and the CLA, Liberal distress to get here. delighted to confirm that the Government has listened to farmers, the Liberal Democrats, and their own MPs. These changes will take many family farms below the threshold, saving them from financial ruin and safeguarding the UK’s world-class agricultural sector. “As a farmer’s daughter, I know exactly what this news will mean to farming families across the country. A devastating mental and financial burden has been lifted, one that should never have been placed on the shoulders of those who feed our country, steward our land, and protect our national security. “Of course, the fight isn’t fully over. In the New Year, the Liberal Democrats will keep calling for the Government to scrap this unfair tax in full. But this hard-won concession means that many farmers across the UK will sleep easier this Christmas knowing that their relentless efforts have paid off and their farm gates can stay open for generations to come. “I will continue to fight for farmers to get the full support they deserve. "In these uncertain times, protecting our food supply should be the Government’s utmost priority.”

Improving Lung Health through Singing
A
singing for lung health group in Yeovil is helping local people with lung conditions breathe more easily, feel more confident, and enjoy the power of singing together.
Yeovil Sing2Breathe is part of a wider network of singing for lung health groups with the aim of supporting people living with long-term respiratory conditions. Building on the success of similar programmes in Bridgwater, Cheddar, and Wells, the Yeovil group meets every Thursday afternoon from 2pm to 3.15pm at Westlands Entertainment Venue, led by experienced community singing leader Nikki Hewson. Participants of the groups live with a variety of lung health conditions, including bronchiectasis, COPD, asthma, and sarcoidosis and the sessions provide a relaxing space to come together and learn breathing techniques, relaxation methods, and singing exercises to help manage symptoms and improve wellbeing. Many have reported noticeable improvements in their daily lives. “A brilliant new class for our area,” said one participant. “It offers a valuable, previously unavailable way to help manage common lung conditions. Normally, support ends after medication or a one-off rehab course, but Sing2Breathe offers something ongoing and empowering.” “It’s an excellent way to understand how you breathe and how to control it, all in a happy, inclusive environment. Totally positive in every way.” “With practice, I can use the breathing techniques every day,” said one member, “Nikki’s love of singing really lifts us all.” Sing2Breathe founder Kate Lynch set up Sing2breathe in October 2023 and this year the organisation achieved charitable status. Its summer celebration event, ‘Sing Out Loud for Lung Health’, brought together members from all its regional groups for an uplifting afternoon of shared music and experiences. Looking ahead, Sing2Breathe is now focusing on securing the future of its Yeovil group by exploring local funding opportunities and partnerships to ensure that residents can continue to benefit from this. Why not come along for a taster session and see how Sing2Breathe could help you breathe a little easier? Places must be booked in advance. If you are interested in joining the Yeovil group please contact Nikki Hewson at: sing2breathe2@gmail.com 07812 441143 For groups running in Cheddar, Wells and Bridgwater, contact Kate Lynch: sing2breathe2@gmail.com 07595 745884

ESTIVE cheer managed to break through at under-pressure NHS services across Somerset in recent weeks. Hospitals and clinics in the county went "above and beyond to make this festive season special for patients and colleagues alike", Somerset NHS said, with a number of Christmas activities. Among them were a special stop on the way to Bethlehem for Charlie the donkey, who stopped in at the Willow Ward mental health unit, in Bridgwater, which "brought smiles to patients and colleagues". In Yeovil, players from Yeovil Town Football Club and a giant Elf on the Shelf visited, as well as Somerset cricket players and the Mayor and Mayoress of Taunton who visited Musgrove Park Hospital. Village hall gets a makeover thanks to developer behind 10 new homes nearby
A
SOMERSET village hall has got a new lick of paint – thanks to a developer who built 10 homes nearby. Taunton-based Summerfield Homes recently completed a development in Ashill, near Ilminster, and took the opportunity to repaint the building. The redecoration was needed after the building was damaged during heavy storms at the end of 2024, and form part of a larger refurbishment project, Ashill Village Hall is used by various community groups, as well as the village school for PE during bad weather. Summerfield’s £500 contribution for the redecoration was made through the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF), where the company has

established a Summerfield Force for Good Fund for grants to chosen charities and community projects throughout the year. Other grants made from the Summerfield Fund in 2025 include £5,000 to the
Albermarle Centre, in Taunton, supporting vulnerable young people with disabilities; £1,000 to help disadvantaged young people reach their potential in STEM subjects; and £5,000 to the North Taunton Partnership towards their community centre. Fiona Foster, senior philanthropy manager at SCF, said: “Our role in getting funds into the hands of passionate people who want to make their communities happier, healthier, and more connected is only possible thanks to the generosity of supporters like Summerfield, and we are truly grateful. “We know what a difference
the painting of Ashill Village Hall made, as it helped waterproof the cladding and protect it from more severe weather. Without the use of the hall, local groups would have to close or go further afield. It is a valuable community hub.” James Holyday, group managing director for Summerfield, added: “It is our pleasure to give something back to the communities where we live and work. “Channelling our giving through Somerset Community Foundation is an effective way of ensuring the funds are well spent where they are needed.”
Somerset housing development sells out WHEN work starts on a new housing development, residents living nearby generally ask the question - who is going to buy all these houses? Well, one developer is celebrating after the last of 86 new homes at a Somerset site sold. Barratt Bristol’s Brue Place, on Huntspill Road, Highbridge, launched in 2022 and has now been completely sold. As part of the scheme, the housebuilder invested £169,190 into supporting improvements to transport, education and
amenities through a planning agreement to enhance the area. Richard Lawson, sales director for Barratt Bristol, said: "We are delighted to have provided much-needed new homes in Somerset while contributing to the growth of the local community. "It’s easy to see why our Brue Place development has been such a huge success, with its fantastic location and homes that combine sleek, modern interiors with the practical functionality needed for everyday family living.
"The development is such a special place to live and we are thrilled to have fulfilled what we set out to do."
Barratt Bristol is currently building elsewhere in the county, including at Somer Meadows, in Midsomer Norton.
