Town treasure finds purpose in helping

A TIRELESS leading light of three charities in Wareham has been honoured by the High Sheriff of Dorset.

Retired marketing executive Harold Forbes is co-founder, chair and treasurer of Wareham Area Men’s Shed; the organiser of the town’s litter pickers, known as the Wareham Wombles; and a trustee and treasurer of the Wareham District Development Trust.

He was presented with a High Sheriff’s Award ‘in recognition of great and valuable services to the community’ by Dorset’s ceremonial dignitary, Callum Bremner, at a ceremony in the Shed’s work-shop at Lenctenbury Farm, outside Wareham.

£2.3m for Best Start family hubs

FAMILIES across Dorset will benefit from better support services over the next three years thanks to a £2.3 million pot of government funding.

The investment will enable Dorset Council to develop its network of family hubs, making it easier to access help from pregnancy through to age 19 – or 25 for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Three new family hubs will open in Portland Hospital, Weymouth Central and Blandford in 2026.

Dorset’s eight hubs in Swanage, Wareham, Dorchester, Wimborne, Bridport, Ferndown, Littlemoor and Sturminster Newton will continue to deliver services, with expanded programmes for three to four-year-olds.

All hubs will be rebranded as

Mr Bremner paid tribute to Harold’s ‘commitment, generosity of spirit and unwavering enthusiasm, which exemplifies voluntary endeavour and civic spirit’.

The Sheriff also praised his ‘inspiring personal resilience’ given he has continued his voluntary work while also supporting his wife Karin through long and arduous treatment for a serious illness.

Harold said he was ‘extremely honoured’ to receive the award.

Asked what drives him to be so involved in the community, he said: “I guess when you retire you lose a sense of purpose – you don’t have the same structure or pressure on you.

Best Start Family Hubs, reflecting a focus on early years and connecting families with the right support.

The hubs provide a welcoming space for families to access health services, parenting support and community resources under one roof.

The funding will strengthen partnerships with health providers and voluntary organisations, ensuring families get the right help at the right time.

Councillor Clare Sutton, Dorset Council cabinet member for children’s services, education and skills, said: “This funding is a real boost for families and will make it easier for parents and carers to find the help they need, when they need it, all in one place and closer to home.

“By working together with health and community partners, we’re creating hubs that truly put children and families first and give children the best possible start in life.”

“I find life is better with structure and a bit of purpose.

And what’s nice is that, as opposed to working, the things I do are hobbies which no one is forcing me to do.

“They keep me active, keep my brain sharp and challenge my creativity.”

Members of the Men’s Shed said Harold was known for his keen wit and ready smile.

Retired doctor Philip Dawson, who nominated Harold for the award, added: “We all need leaders at every stage of life, even in retirement.

“And Harold, with his remarkable ability to combine fine organisation with good humour, is a tremendous example.”

Wareham District Development Trust – which tends parts of the town, including Priory Meadow – said: “Harold has been very busy on behalf of Wareham and Purbeck for many years.

by Helen Casey WAREHAM Wednesdays’ presentation evening was attended by representatives from the five charities supported this year, as well as sponsors, volunteers and the committee.

The first evening in this year’s programme was for the Chairman’s Charity, the Dorset branch of the British Association for Immediate Care (BASICS).

BASICS Dorset is an enhanced care service which works to save the lives of critically ill patients.

Its medics work with the Ambulance Service to treat patients wherever and whenever they need help out in the community.

Its medics in Dorset are volunteers. When not treating patients in the county's hospitals and GP practices they offer their time ‘on-call’ to respond quickly any time of day or night.

Although time is given freely, the charity relies on public donations to provide and maintain equipment, vehicles and to train new medics.

The town filled up on August 13 with Superheroes who came to give their support to Dementia Friendly Purbeck (DFP), a community group that raises awareness and provides support for all those affected with Alzheimer's and dementia locally.

Tim Lench, Sterling Committee member for DFP, said Dementia Friendly Purbeck would like to thank Wareham Wednesdays for its donation of £1,500 towards a second Admiral Nurse in the Purbeck area.

The nurse will help people with dementia and their carers – the family members and friends who give so much of their time to look after those who have dementia.

“We run two minibuses which are also used by Purbeck Youth Club and the Dorset Blind Charity, so we need to manage the upkeep of these buses.

“This wonderful donation from Wareham Wednesdays will help towards funding the minibus insurance, and I cannot thank the group enough for choosing our club to benefit from their great evenings on the Quay this summer.

“Thanks again from us all at Wareham Disabled Club, as we appreciate the amount of hard work and effort it takes to run your marvellous community events.”

Following the presentations, Wareham Wednesdays chair, Ant Pack, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our officers, committee members, volunteers and partners.

“Your dedication, hard work and unwavering support have been the backbone of Wareham Wednesdays’ achievements.”

Speaking on behalf of the committee, he added: “In particular, I would like to give special thanks to one member of the team that has decided to hang up their hi-vis at the end of this year.

“This person has been there since the beginning and been a driving force behind Wareham Wednesdays in all ways.

“Her calmness under pressure and ability to see the funny aspects of some of our challenges has helped steer a true course.

“Please Jude Marquet come and say ‘hi’ and wave to all. We are deeply grateful for your leadership and passion.”

Fitting words for someone who has played a pivotal role making the Wareham Wednesday events happen each of the last 15 years.

David Gynes, who heads up Purbeck Parkys, said: “Purbeck Parky’s are very grateful for the kind and generous donation of £1,500 from the Wareham Wednesdays committee.

“It is going to help us to help others living with Parkinson’s in this area.

“We hope to be able to provide funds to help with the cost of exercise classes.

“We are also looking at ways of assisting with taxi fares for those who no longer have their own transport and find it very difficult to use public transport services.

“We are a young organisation and this donation is a great encouragement to us.”

The final evening this year was dedicated to two local good causes.

MNDA East Dorset & New Forest, the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, serves all those in the area affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND), people with MND, their carers, family and friends.

Jillian Heys, of MND, said: "The East Dorset and New Forest Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association would like to thank the committee and volunteers of Wareham Wednesdays for their hard work and commitment, to not only raising funds for local charities, but for 'raising fun'!

“As a small group of volunteers, we certainly had a lot of fun at the four events held in the summer.”

Wareham Disabled Club, which is open to disabled and seniors in the Wareham and Wool areas, received a £750 donation.

Club chair, Debbie Dunford, said: “Wareham Disabled Club meets once a month for tea and entertainment, and again for an outing, to enable our members to get out, socialise, have fun and help them to ‘live their best lives’.

EAST Dorset Heritage Trust has put the finishing touches to its new programme of events and courses.

A programme of talks includes Clarendon Place – A Royal Ruin, Aviation Around Poole Bay, The Man Who Didn’t Succeed and The Pushchair Murder.

Visits are planned to The Henry Hoover Factory and historic Moines Court, along with a guided walk around Dorchester. Guided walks are also on offer in the countryside of north and east Dorset.

‘Crafty’ types can enjoy arm knitting and crochet, and pottery throwing courses and a painting course both start in January.

New year party at Carey Hall

Lino print and gel print workshops are on offer, along with willow weaving, sea glass art and candle making.

The programme also includes modern languages, such as Italian, French and Spanish, creative writing and poetry and literature appreciation courses.

One-to-one IT sessions can help with those computer niggles.

expand its educational and environmental outreach.

SUPPORTERS of live music have raised the £25,000 needed to ensure Swanage Jazz Festival can go ahead next summer.

The Purbeck Gazette reported at the end of October that the festival had launched an appeal to raise that sum following lower than expected ticket sales at this year’s event.

Festival director, Paul Kelly, said at the time that 2025 had been a difficult year for the festivals and live events business across the country.

He said the festival had sold 150 fewer stroller tickets than

budgeted for and ended up with a £15,000 loss and no remaining reserves.

The small voluntary festival team secured short-term loans

to ensure all artists and suppliers could be paid.

The event was a success and now the £25,000 appeal target has been reached, the festival

will go ahead as planned between July 10-12.

Paul said: “We have been amazed and uplifted by the generosity of our supporters.

“We raised over half the £25,000 target in just one week and donations reached £20,000 in three weeks.

“We have now secured the full £25,000 we were seeking by our target date and are now back on track.”

He added: “We are now planning the 2026 festival programme and expect to be announcing that in early February 2026.

“It’s great to know that the festival is so well loved and valued, and we are so much looking forward to bringing another batch of top quality Jazz groups to our iconic spot in Swanage.”

Rewilding site welcomes visitors for tree planting DORSET Wildlife Trust’s (DWT) Wild Woodbury nature reserve, near Bere Regis, welcomed residents, volunteers and local VIPs to celebrate nature, wildlife and the power of community-led conservation.

The event drew almost 300 guests who planted a ‘community food forest’ and enjoyed wildlife-themed activities for all ages.

Site rangers led guided walks offering visitors a chance to explore the rewilding site and learn about the ecological changes taking place.

In just over four years, since DWT acquired the site, Wild Woodbury has been transformed from intensively farmed land into a thriving mosaic of

wetlands, woodlands and meadows.

The rewilding project has restored natural processes, improved biodiversity and created vital habitats for species ranging from dragonflies and skylarks to otters and orchids.

Daisy Meadowcroft, Wild Woodbury ranger, said: “It was lovely to see so many familiar faces and many who were visiting Wild Woodbury for the first time.

“Days like this remind us how vital community involvement is in shaping a wilder, more resilient future for nature and wildlife in our landscape.

“Many of the visitors took the opportunity to share their views

on our ideas board and by taking part in our consultation questionnaire which will help us shape the future of Wild Woodbury.”

Wildlife visitor centres make volunteer appeal

DORSET Wildlife Trust is looking for keen volunteers to join its friendly teams at The Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre, Kimmeridge; The Fine Foundation Wild Chesil Centre, Portland; and Kingcombe Visitor Centre, near Maiden Newton.

Roles are varied and include volunteering inside and outside the visitor centres, engaging with visitors, assisting with events and conducting surveys with the opportunity to get involved with other activities such as practical conservation tasks.

Centre officer, Sarah Hodgson, said “All our visitor centres are situated in unique spots across the county, from coastal areas to rural countryside.

“They act as a gateway for visitors to explore diverse habitats, discover amazing wildlife and hopefully inspire people to act for nature.

“All that is required to be a

volunteer is a passion for the natural environment and the desire to make a difference for wildlife in Dorset.

DORSET MPs campaigning to clean up the county’s rivers and beaches have welcomed a move to a more flexible bathing water season.

Lloyd Hatton, Tom Hayes, Jessica Toale and Neil DuncanJordan met the Minister for Water and Flooding last month to urge the Government to take stronger action on improving bathing water standards across the UK. The meeting followed a visit to Durdle Door in May, where they outlined proposals including extending the official bathing water season, introducing year-round water quality testing, broadening the definition of water users and implementing real-time data reporting.

The MPs say the measures would better protect all water users and stop unwanted sewage spills.

Now the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has said it is amending the regulation around the fixed date of bathing seasons to become more flexible, enabling the Minister to set site-specific bathing seasons where appropriate.

Next steps on how this reform will operate in practice will be developed with water users and shared through published guidance in the coming months.

Volunteer appeal for Citizens Advice bus

CITIZENS Advice East Dorset & Purbeck is looking for volunteers to help on its Advice Bus, providing free, confidential advice to residents while bringing support and guidance to those who need it most.

Tracey Brightman, outreach adviser, Citizens Advice East Dorset & Purbeck, said: “Our Advice Bus reaches rural communities, providing essential help to residents who may not be able to access our offices and outreach locations.

“It has helped more than 3,000 residents since 2023 when it was first on the road.

“Demand has been steadily increasing as it’s become an essential service to many.

“Due to this increase in demand, we are now in need of new volunteers to join our team.”

Volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, including students, to recently

retired, to people looking to get experience after having a career break.

£454,000 awarded to 54 good causes

TALBOT Village Trust, a Dorset-based grant-giving charity, has awarded £400,000 to 54 charitable organisations in its latest round of funding.

The grants support a wide range of initiatives designed to strengthen community resilience and inclusion across Purbeck, East Dorset, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.

The funds have been awarded to a range of projects and events including in health and social care, youth, creative arts and wellbeing.

One of the beneficiaries of the latest grant funding is Dorset children’s hospice, Julia’s House. Talbot Village Trust awarded a major grant towards the extension of the hospice and improvements to futureproof care for children.

Lisa Holmes, trusts and

foundations lead at Julia’s House said “We are so delighted to receive these transformational funds of £100,000 from Talbot Village Trust.

“We approached the trust because we had developed some plans to adapt our Dorset hospice to meet the changing needs of the children and families we care for, particularly our end-of-life suite.

“This grant allows us to complete an extension bringing a fully equipped annex space for a child at the end of their life, designed so the whole family can stay together”.

Citizens Advice BCP was awarded £14,930 to enhance

Kirsty Pemberton, development and campaigns manager at Citizens Advice BCP, said: “Receiving this funding empowers us to modernise our IT infrastructure, ensuring our systems are robust, secure and ready for the future.

Packed church for Light Up a Life event

THE Mayor of Poole and the Sheriff of Poole joined local residents at a full St James’ Church in Old Town Poole as the community came together to light candles and remember loved ones at Forest Holme Hospice Charity’s annual Light up a Life service.

Led by the Revd Lucy Holt, the service welcomed anyone wishing to pause during the festive season and remember those who are no longer with us, whether or not they had a direct connection to Forest Holme.

The event featured moving poems and readings shared by Forest Holme volunteers, along

with carols performed by Tim’s Singers choir.

The choir brought the service to a close with a performance of its recent charity song, All Our Love, a reimagining of the Coldplay song, recorded earlier this year to raise money for the hospice.

Claire Cooper, from Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said: “Light up a Life continues to be a meaningful moment in the hospice calendar, offering comfort, connection and a reminder that remembrance is something shared.

Sunflower Trail coins in the cash for hospital

THIS year’s Sunflower Trail at the Hoskin family’s Maiden Castle Farm, Dorchester, raised £15,100 for the Emergency and Critical Care Appeal at Dorset County Hospital (DCH).

The sum takes the total the event has raised for the hospital over the last five years to £78,000.

Organisers and those who took part in the fundraiser were thanked at a celebration event at the Dorford Centre, where plans for next year’s Sunflower Trail were also discussed.

The Hoskins have supported DCH Charity through the Sunflower Trail since 2021, the team raising funds for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), Kingfisher Ward and the general fund, with more than £31,000 donated to the Emergency and Critical Care Appeal.

HAMWORTHY care home residents supported a commemorative event which saw Poole Quay illuminated by candlelight.

Residents from Dorset House care home, run by not-for-profit care provider, Care South, attended the Candles on the Quay event organised by Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.

Care South was headline sponsor of the event in support of Lewis-Manning, an independent Dorset charity which provides care to people and their loved ones facing a life-limiting illness.

Dorset House residents had a special VIP area reserved for them in The Quay pub where

they could see hundreds of battery-powered candles light up a jetty on Poole Quay.

Care home residents, local schools and community groups had decorated candle bags with messages to missed loved ones ahead of the event.

Hundreds of local people also turned out to support Candles on the Quay, which provided an opportunity to reflect and remember their loved ones.

The Salvation Army Band, Dorset Police Male Voice Choir and Relight My Choir provided music at the event.

Tracy Jennings, home manager at Dorset House, said: “It was an incredibly touching

to our visitors.

“Over the last five years, we’ve watched families make memories and capture moments that become treasured keepsakes.

“Seeing the smiles, laughter and pure happiness from those who wander through the trail reminds us why we do what we do.

School rises to Movember challenge

STAFF belonging to the Adventure Learning Team at Harbour School Dorset in Bovington have raised more than £1,000 for Movember.

The annual moustachegrowing fundraiser is to support men’s health and those taking part spend the month of November leaving their top lips unshaved.

Neal Burton, the Adventure Learning Centre lead at the specialist SEND school, organised the hirsute challenge to also raise awareness about men’s mental health.

He said: “We set an

ambitious fundraising target of £1,000 but people have been so generous the final amount raised was £1,226.

“The seven men in our Adventure Learning Team all grew moustaches and Rebecca Joyce joined us in the sponsored walks, runs and cycles.

“The Adventure Learning Team here is one of eight across the trust and it mainly involves outdoor activities including rock climbing, mountain biking and paddlesports.

“Our emphasis on undertaking the challenge was to raise awareness about men’s

Museum investigates detectorist’s find

by James Power DORSET’S Stour Valley Search and Recovery Club has named Dorchester ecologist Hugo Sewill as its Detectorist of the Year at the club’s recent annual awards ceremony, held in Wimborne.

Despite joining the club only two years ago, Hugo, 29, has quickly made his mark, uncovering an impressive array of ancient coins and artefacts.

Among his most remarkable discoveries is a stunning gold cross unearthed on farmland near Blandford.

Classified as treasure, the cross has been sent to the British Museum for expert analysis to determine its likely origins.

As is always the case, once valued, any proceeds will be shared with the landowner.

Hard life selling the Big Issue

I AM concerned that many people in Swanage may have little knowledge of the Big Issue magazine and its value to the people who sell them.

Marella sits on a wee stool outside Boots the Chemist in Station Road in all weathers selling the magazine.

I think she said she is from Romania originally and has a family in Bournemouth from where she catches the bus four or five times a week.

Marella pays £2 for each magazine and sells them for £4, so she can keep the difference.

She sometimes sits hugging them, so people often cannot see what it is she is selling.

It would be good if the magazine could be displayed better and people made aware of it.

Marella is always grateful for a cup of coffee or a chocolate bar.

I am concerned for her sitting there for hours trying to sell a few magazines – if they could be sold more quickly, she could return to her home and family so much sooner.

Prison deaths show system is failing

NEWS that prison deaths hit their highest 12-month total this century should be a wake-up call.

This year there have been 411 deaths in custody – almost a quarter self-inflicted, up 9% on the previous year.

This reflects a system failing to keep people safe and should be a concern for everyone in our communities.

If we are serious about reducing deaths in prison, we must confront the conditions driving this crisis.

Overcrowding fuels violence and distress. Mental health support remains wholly inadequate, despite high levels of need.

purbeckgazette.co.uk And too many people are left without access to purposeful activity or education, often locked in their cells for up to 22 hours a day.

Prisons must be places where individuals are supported to rebuild their lives and prepare for life on the outside, not environments which destroy wellbeing and further traumatise vulnerable people.

We must end the inhumane practice of only letting people out their cells for a mere few hours a day and increase focus and investment in meaningful support, training and work opportunities in prison.

This will not only save lives but better prepare those in custody when they are released into our communities.

Belvedere Singers seek new recruits

STRETCH out those legs and vocal chords and step Into the Woods with the Belvedere Singers this January.

The musical medley is just one of the pieces we will be performing at our next concert in May. We love to welcome new singers to our rehearsals, which re-start on Tuesday, January 6.

You really do not need to have a lot of musical experience to sing with us. We are a choir for the four voice parts – alto, soprano, tenor and bass – and so it helps to be able to follow music, but it is far from essential.

Many resources are now available online to help singers learn their parts and we provide new members with information to signpost them to the most helpful ones.

At rehearsals, we do our best to provide a supportive environment and seat new singers beside more experienced choir members.

Our fantastic music director, Clive Watkiss, begins each rehearsal with vocal exercises and advice on singing techniques to help everyone get the most out of their voice.

We offer two free rehearsals to anyone who would like to try us out and there is no

obligation to join us after the trial period. After that, each rehearsal works out at about £5 a night.

We supply members with all the music they need, as well as a warm and welcoming rehearsal space, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Victoria Avenue in Swanage.

Ample car parking is available and access for the less mobile.

Rehearsals run from 7.30pm9.30pm with a 15-minute tea break half-way through.

Although we begin again on January 6, we welcome new members at any point in our singing year.

Come and give us a try. We really want to hear from you. If you cannot come along yourself, please spread the word about us, especially to the men in your lives. We are very short of male voices but need new singers for all voice parts.

A few penalties to each side were defended well, but on 12 minutes a penalty to Swans took them to the Corsham five metres line and from the line-out the ball was passed along Swans’ backs to winger George Crouch, who touched down in the corner.

Swans were now on top at the scrums, driving Corsham backwards, and from a scrum inside the visitor’s 22 the ball went blindside to Swans’ other winger Ollie Dillon, who

RUGBY scored. Crouch added the extras – 12 points-0 – after 20 minutes.

Five minutes later, another scrum close to the Corsham line was held up but a pass to scrum-half Olly Peters saw him score close to the posts. Crouch converted (19-0).

A few penalties to Corsham relieved the pressure, but Swans still dominated the play and a break by wing forward Lee Hardy close to half-time saw Swans go into the break 26-0 up.

At the start of the second half, a penalty to Corsham did not find touch and the ball was worked to centre Ed Dimascio who burst through the visitor’s defence to score out wide (31-0)

Corsham came back with some backs moves and Swans’ defence had to be on their guard and tackled hard to prevent Corsham getting through.

On 58 minutes, a brilliant move along Swans’ threequarters saw Crouch go in for his second try out wide to put Swans on 36 points.

From another scrum on the 22, Swans drove Corsham backwards, and once again scrum-half Peters was on hand to score. Crouch converted (43-0) after 65 minutes.

by Graham Howard, lead coach DORCHESTER Juniors held their final match of the year at Todber Manor’s Hillview Lake in changeable conditions.

The water levels had risen substantially since the droughts of summer, and this may have influenced the weights which were much lower than anglers have experienced in the past.

Despite this, 14 juniors and their parents were itching to get fishing as the rain stopped for a while, but it was likely it would be harder than most expected.

At the end of the match, all the juniors were able to choose gifts from a huge pile of presents organised by resident Santa, Jerry Bracey.

Former champion Jack Copp, outgoing junior and ‘local superstar’ was 3rd with 33lb 1oz and Josiah WellsParkes was 2nd with 36lb 8oz.

The unexpected winner of the match, however, was six-year-old Alexander Adey, who has been fishing 18 months.

He and mum, Charlie, even had breakfast at the restaurant during the match, but still caught five big carp and a bream to win with 37lb 11oz.

The cheer Alexander got from everyone present reflected the good feeling about his achievement.

Telling It Like It Is

‘Community’ is something we do here T HERE are times when writing this column feels like trying to make sense of a world that’s been assembled by an enthusiastic committee armed with a pot of glue and no instructions. And then there are weeks – like these past few in Swanage and Purbeck – when the stories write themselves.

Let’s begin where we left off last month – the ongoing saga of the Police and Crime Commissioners. By now you’ve probably heard that the PCC role is set to be abolished in 2028, allegedly freeing up £100 million for neighbourhood policing. Allegedly. Us sceptics know that anything labelled a ‘saving’ by central government is usually followed by the quiet sound of a plug being pulled out of a very large bath.

But while politicians debate whether this is progress or another rebranding exercise, life in Swanage rolls merrily on.

And speaking of rolling — the Christmas winds had a jolly good go at rolling the entire Swanage Christmas Market down Station Road earlier this month, forcing the poor organisers to reschedule before someone ended up chasing a runaway pudding into the sea.

Meanwhile, on slightly firmer ground, Swanage School hosted its annual Christmas tea party, welcoming local seniors for carols, a panto from enthusiastic Year 7s and enough mince pies to put most of us into hibernation. Heart-warming scenes and a reminder that this community still fundamentally works – even when government doesn’t.

And speaking of things that don’t work – the driving test system. If you are one of the unfortunate souls trying to book a test, take my advice – pack snacks, water and perhaps a motivational podcast. The queues and backlogs grow longer by the week, and scammers are now bulk-booking test slots using bots before reselling them at eye-watering prices. Ticketmaster would be proud.

Of course, the DVSA insists everything is ‘under control’, which is bureaucratic code for “yes, the roof is leaking, but we’ve put a bucket under it and filed a report”. Until it overhauls the booking system, only registered driving instructors should be able to reserve tests – not Kevin from Facebook Marketplace who claims he can

Back home, the local artisans at Swanage’s beach huts have returned for their festive craft weekends – bravely setting up each Saturday and Sunday despite rain, wind and the occasional airborne dog walker.

Speaking of buying things – an unexpected seasonal miracle hit Swanage this month with the pop-up project Santa’s Wish.

What started as a modest idea to help families in need turned into something closer to a wholesale distribution centre for goodwill.

More than 900 gifts were donated – so many, in fact, that The Ship Inn had to abandon all hope of ever finding the floor of its back room until January. If you’re looking for evidence that Swanage still has a heart the size of Old Harry Rocks, there it is.

OT everything is quite so festive, though. The historic Purbeck Mummers’ Boxing Day performance – a wonderfully eccentric tradition involving costumes, rhymes and general merriment – is at risk of fading into the mist. Numbers are dwindling, and this year’s performance may be its last. I refuse to believe we live in a world where people will queue for three hours for a pumpkinspiced latte but won’t don an oversized pair of trousers to yell comedic lines in Corfe Castle.

Priorities, people.

In happier news, Wareham’s own community superstar, Harold Forbes, has been honoured by the High Sheriff of Dorset for outstanding voluntary service. The man has somehow managed to champion three major charities simultaneously – enough to make the rest of us feel exhausted simply reading his list of achievements. Every area needs people like him, quietly getting on with the work the rest of us only talk about.

And, in a rare win for local arts, Swanage Jazz Festival has officially secured the funding it needed – just in the nick of time – meaning July 2026 will once

again echo with saxophones instead of panicked fundraising pleas. For now.

All of this local colour makes you wonder why we ever let central government meddle in things. When Purbeck District Council was absorbed into Dorset Council a few years ago, we were told it would ‘save money’. I’m still waiting – still – to see even a 10p reduction on my council tax bill. If there’s been a saving, it must be hidden in the same cupboard as the missing driving test appointments.

And now, facing the disappearance of the PCC system, we’re told once again that savings are coming our way. Maybe they are. Maybe a pig really did just fly past my window again. But if local experience tells us anything, it’s that the more layers government adds – or removes – the less we understand what’s going on – and the more likely it is that the ‘saving’ becomes a ‘consultation fee’.

Contrast that with what’s happened here in just the last 30 days – kids singing carols for seniors; artisans freezing for their craft; a pop-up gift project that outgrew its venue; traditions at risk; local heroes recognised; festivals saved; markets rearranged; and Christmas lights twinkling from Swanage to Wareham.

No committees. No Westminster statements. No 17-page budget documents. Just people doing what needs doing.

So, whether you’re wrapping presents, hunting down your final turkey, bracing for another round of Purbeck weather or considering signing up with the Mummers before it’s too late, take a moment to appreciate that – PCC or no PCC – community is still something we do down here, not something we wait to be delivered.

And if next month the Government announces another plan to ‘streamline’ things, don’t panic. Just look out the window.

Time to look back – and ahead AS we near the end of 2025 – and the end of my first full year as ward member for South East Purbeck – it is an ideal time to reflect on what has been achieved and look ahead to what 2026 will bring us.

2025 highlights include: n Coordinating the opposition to the Sandbanks Ferry Company’s planned fare rises – to mixed results – and opposing the Household Recycling Centre booking system for Swanage and Wareham. n Working to develop Purbeck Park (Norden) to create a visitor hub, promoting active travel and reducing traffic into Purbeck. n Enabling local, temporary campsites to operate by petitioning Dorset Council for a sensible approach to heathland mitigations. n Introducing parking enforcement on Ferry Road to deter the summer-long campervan city. n Supporting efforts to mitigate flood risks – Langton Matravers, East Stoke; and fire

Banker swapped life in the City for helping the homeless

A FORMER City Trader who decided to retrain as a counsellor has spent more than 600 hours helping homeless people to rebuild their lives.

Gavin Tait, 55, has been a volunteer at the Hope Housing, Training & Support (HTS) charity in Bournemouth for the last two-and-a-half years.

Hope, based in St Swithuns Road South, offers former rough sleepers safe accommodation and a programme of counselling, training and support towards independent living and employment.

Gavin gives free weekly counselling sessions to Hope residents, many of whom have experienced violent upbringings, abuse and addiction.

This support has enabled dozens of people to address trauma and develop coping skills, a sense of security and self-worth.

He said: “I worked in finance for quite a while but started to feel it was sucking at my soul and wanted to do something more real and tangible.

“At the time, I lived in a village in north Dorset and had some spare land, so I planted some apple trees and started a small cider company.

“My orchard had a public footpath running through it and villagers I had never had the time to connect with before would stop and talk while I was working on the trees.

“Often, I found they would open up about their lives and their problems.

“Being outside and something about trees seemed to create a space for a kind of eco-therapy.

“I realised then that what I had missed in all those years in banking was working in a way that matched my values as a person, and so I decided to train as a counsellor.”

Counselling training requires students to amass professional training hours.

Gavin looked around for somewhere to volunteer, but found every charity and organisation seemed too big, too niche or just didn’t seem to fit with him.

“Lisa Everett, a director at Hope, who is also a trained counsellor, made contact with my college and someone luckily suggested me,” he added.

“I went to Hope and everything about it resonated with me.

“The residents have been through so much. Yet most of them would not be able to afford counselling in normal circumstances.

“I hear some truly harrowing stories – it’s not for the fainthearted – but the residents share an incredible type of resilience and it’s an absolute privilege to be allowed into their trust and to be able to support them in their recovery.”

Gavin is leaving Hope this month and in January 2026 will move onto advanced training in CBT –Cognitive Behaviour Therapy – while working with the NHS Steps to Wellbeing service.

He said: “I feel extremely lucky to have worked with Hope and to have supported their residents on their recovery journey.

“I will be staying in touch and hope other trainee counsellors reading this will consider volunteering their skills with Hope and other local homelessness charities.

“It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Lisa Everett, director of services/counsellor at Hope Housing, said: “As someone who has worked alongside vulnerable adults at Hope Housing for the past 17 years, I am aware of the many benefits of talking therapies.

“The counselling service we now run, alongside the support we offer, is hugely beneficial to our residents’ wellbeing and success.

“We are incredibly grateful to Gavin for his hard work and commitment to Hope during the past two years.

Meditations in nature: A mid-winter ‘reset’

by Susanna Curtin THIS column comes to you from the Lake District – a region I have come to know and love in all its colours and seasons, and the perfect place to take some ‘time out’ before Christmas. Sadly, a recent leg injury has curtailed my quest for the highest summits this winter, and so, for the first time, I am staying relatively low to enjoy the mountains from the valleys and lakes that lay beneath the rocky crags and peaks.

But today, not wanting to feel completely deterred, and feeding my innate desire for the breathtaking views that gaining height affords, I am making my way into the wilds of Mickleden, one of the classic u-shaped Great Langdale valleys carved by a retreating glacier from the Ice Age. I am strolling along a stony path that follows Mickleden Beck, a bubbling watercourse beneath the fells. On my right, there is Loft Crag and Pike O’ Stickle, and to my left, Crinkle Crags and the smooth Great Slab of Bowfell, then ahead lies the steep route up Rossett Gill and the summit of Rossett Pike.

It is an icy day where the deep, cloudless blue outlines the jagged demarcation between rock and sky. The vivid colours of winter are all around me.

There are lime green and purple lichens, the rich cinnamon colour of the bracken, the bright emeralds of the valley floor and the weather-torn green of the stumpy Juniper trees that cling to the volcanic rocks beneath Pike O’ Stickle. Then, in true wintery splendour, on top of the distant fells and in the sunless gulleys, lies the brilliant whiteness of snow.

As I make my way up the long, steep path towards the summit of Rossett Pike, shafts of sunbeams streak through the buttresses of Bowfell.

Thereafter, I am reminded of just how quickly the sun dips in winter. By the time I reach the Col between Bowfell and Rossett Pike, what once was in dazzling sunshine becomes cast in a dark, cold shadow that falls over me and the foreboding, black waters of Angle Tarn.

Initially I had wanted to reach the snowy summit of Great End, a peak at the end of the Glaramara range, but bereft of the warming sunlight, black ice lurks over the stepping stones across the stream that feeds the tarn. Disappointed, I decide to rethink my route.

I turn tail to stop for lunch on the summit of Rossett Pike, where I overlook the Langstrath Valley. Despite nursing a stinging injury and a rather

diminishing sense of adventure, I soon settle to enjoy the meditative stillness of this icy, windless day. From here, the summits of Blencathra and Helvellyn story the distant skyline, evoking many happy memories. As the lowering sun steals the warmth from my shoulders, my lunch spot is soon cast in shadow.

Wrapping up and huddling against the rocks, I still admire the incredible power of this lofty position, 651 metres above sea level, and cast in Bowfell’s shadow. For me, this extraordinary scenery is psychologically so compelling.

As much as I love the softness and safety of Dorset, wild, immense landscapes such as this activate deep-rooted, emotional

and evolutionary feelings.

The combination of the high fells, dramatic ridges, open water and shifting weather conditions is so powerful that they seem to quieten the ruminating, self-focused thoughts that can dominate the everyday. Here, I have an expanded perspective invoked by a sense of scale and timelessness that dwarf my daily concerns. From an evolutionary perspective, these high vantage points have provided opportunities for us to spot both dangers and resources.

There is also an immensely satisfying sense of accomplishment when we reach them. Breathing in this remote atmosphere, I feel like I have recalibrated any disquiet. Like the air around me, life seems much clearer now.

As the light diminishes, I pack up my things to begin the boggy descent towards Langstrath Valley before turning onto the Cumbria Way and down Stake Pass to rejoin Mickleden. It is so cold and icy up here that crossing the bog is a strange mix of soft yet crunching footfall. The crisp sound of my footsteps break ice against the silence. Eventually, back in some late sunlight, I find myself amid an alienlooking terrain strewn with irregular, grassy moraines.

These are mounds and depressions formed by glacial deposits left by the retreating Langstrath glacier. Above them, a lone kestrel hovers in search of an unsuspecting bank vole.

Once out of the moraines, I descend the long, rocky path all the way to the valley bottom.

By now, the sun has set and a waxing crescent moon has risen above Crinkle Crags. Time for one last stop to drink the remains of my tea in the twilight before the long, dark trudge back to civilisation. What a wonderful way this has been to celebrate the coming winter solstice and to ‘reset’ my thoughts before the Christmas celebrations. n Dr Susie Curtin (email curtin. susanna@gmail.com)

The Ghost of Christmas Overwhelm

by Kay Parkinson THIS year, why not leave the pressure in the cupboard with the spare tinsel?

Every December, without fail, the Ghost of Christmas Overwhelm pays a visit. You might be familiar with them.

They arrive holding an invisible clipboard filled with everything you are expected to do – the cards that should be written and mailed by the first week, a tree worthy of a glossy magazine cover, three different types of stuffing, and, of course, a smiling, unflappable host at the centre of it all.

The problem arises when the Ghost never asks if you actually want to do any of it. They simply keep adding to the list, whispering, ‘but it’s tradition’ and ‘they will be disappointed’ until you find yourself tying cinnamon sticks to gift wrap at

midnight, wondering where your joy has gone.

Somewhere between the Christmas we imagine and the Christmas we experience, our true selves can become somewhat lost. Honouring yourself might mean saying no to the fifth social gathering in a row. It might involve choosing not to bake cookies shaped like snowflakes when the supermarket offers perfectly good ones. It may also mean accepting that this year, the tree will lean slightly to one side because the children decorated it – and that is exactly how it should be.

There is often pressure to present a perfect Christmas afterward. ‘It was lovely,’ we say, conveniently skipping over the burnt Brussels sprouts, the cat climbing the tree and the moment when you hid in the

The display aimed to highlight Dorset Council’s Give the Greatest Gift campaign, which seeks to inspire more people to become foster carers.

The stockings, near the Jubilee Clock, were created by foster carers, children in care, youth and community groups and residents.

So, if the pudding sinks, the lights become tangled or the paper hats tear within seconds, take a deep breath and move on.

The Ghost will eventually fade away. Legal landmark for private renters

THE Renters’ Rights Act, set to come into force in May next year, will bring in a host of new legal protections, including the end of Section 21 evictions.

It will mean renters are more secure in their homes and will help drive up quality and standards, say groups which have campaigned on the issue for over a decade.

Ben Twomey, chief executive of Generation Rent, said: “This new law is a vital step towards re-balancing power between renters and landlords and should be celebrated.

“Our homes are the foundation of our lives, but for too long Section 21 evictions have forced renters to live in fear of being turfed out of our homes, preventing us from raising valid concerns with our landlords.

“At last we know when this outdated and unfair law will be sent packing.”

He added: “This Renters’ Rights Act is the result of years of tireless campaigning from the renter movement, alongside the dedication and strength of ordinary renters.

“Our work is far from done, particularly in challenging the unchecked and soaring cost of renting, but, with change on the horizon, I hope that renters across England can rest a little easier in recognition of what we have achieved together.”

The Act will be implemented in three stages with the first stage, on May 1, 2026, bringing the major headlines measures into effect:

The Renters’ Rights Act will begin being implemented next May

n Ending arbitrary Section 21 evictions, one of the leading causes of homelessness in recent years. Instead, landlords will require a valid and legal reason to evict their tenants, such as because of rent arrears or anti-social behaviour, but also if they want to sell or move a family member into the home. If they do evict their tenant in order to sell the property or move themselves or a family member in, they will

not be allowed to re-let the property for 12 months after the tenants have moved out. n Abolishing fixed-term tenancies. Instead, all tenancies will become periodic, meaning that it automatically renews every month, until either the tenant provides a notice to quit or a landlord conducts a valid and legal eviction. n Reducing the upfront cost of renting by limiting the amount of rent in advance landlords

It will also end bidding wars, making it illegal for landlords and agents to ask for or accept offers above the advertised rent. n Reducing risks facing renters who challenge rent hikes by incentivising renters to challenge rent increases through the First Tier Tribunal. n Increasing the range of landlord or agent offences for which tenants can claim rent back, such as if a landlord doesn’t abide by the new ‘no re-let’ period after evicting a tenant to sell the home or move in. n Giving renters’ the right to formally request to keep a pet in the home. Landlords will need a good reason to refuse these requests.

Phase two of implementation – starting late 2026 – will bring in: n A new Private Rented Sector Landlord Ombudsman who will provide a free, impartial and binding way to resolve disputes without the courts.

Alongside this, a new Landlord Database will give renters access to more information about their home and who they are renting from.

Phase three – timeline not yet confirmed – will see the introduction of measures to improve the quality of private rented homes: n Applying the Decent Homes Standard – which sets minimum standards that homes must meet – and Awaab’s Law – which sets strict timeframes for repairing dangerous hazards like damp and mould – to privately rented homes.

HOME FOR NINE YEARS THEN TOLD TO LEAVE CHRISTINA is a private renter who recently received a Section 21 notice.

She said: “My family had been living in the same home for nine years before one day an eviction notice arrived through the letter box.

“The prospect of having to uproot our lives is causing

huge emotional strain.

“The rise in rents has been horrific in recent years and, despite being in work, we can’t find somewhere new to live.

“I don’t want to move my daughter to a new school, so we’re stuck with nowhere to go and the eviction date

looming closer.

“Ending Section 21 evictions can’t come soon enough. Evictions are devastating for renters like me.

“We should have the security to know we can’t be turfed out of our homes on a whim.”

‘Use by’ and ‘best before’: What’s the difference?

MANY supermarkets in the UK are opting to remove best before dates on certain products in a bid to fight food waste.

Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Co-op have all removed the dates from a range of products, including fruits and vegetables.

Misunderstanding date labels on fresh produce can lead to significant and unnecessary food waste.

According to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), removing these dates could prevent thousands of tonnes of edible food from being discarded annually, as consumers often throw away perfectly good items, assuming they are unsafe after the date has passed.

Use by and best before dates are often confused, but they are different, so it is important to understand which each means

and what to look out for.

“You should not eat, cook or freeze it after the date displayed, even if it looks or smells fine.

“Use by dates are typically present on meats and dairy products, as well as ready meals

“Always follow the storage instructions on the product – usually refrigeration or freezing.

“Otherwise, it may no longer be good to eat – even before its use by date.”

Using food after its use by date can put individuals at risk of food poisoning.

Foods that have passed their use by date may still look okay to eat, but harmful bacteria cannot be seen and do not have a smell.

Foods labelled with a use by date should be checked daily to make sure they are still safe to eat.

Freezing food before its use by date extends its life, but once defrosted, individuals should eat the food within 24 hours and not freeze food after its use by date.

Dr Anderson added: “Best before dates are an indication of quality rather than safety.

Best birches for winter spectacle

by Sally Gregson VITA Sackville-West, the creator of Sissinghurst, wrote extensively about her famously beautiful garden in Kent. And winter inspired her. She recommended “planting for winter pleasure when the months dishearten.” It’s a sound piece of advice.

Ghostly white Himalayan birches have a commanding presence. They populate a large garden. They stride alongside you, seeming to shift as they advance and retreat from view as you walk through the space.

And in winter this effect is especially powerful.

Himalayan Birches – Betula utilis – vary in colour according to their origins. Those from Nepal tend to have deep red and rich brown bark, others from Sichuan, China, are especially dark. Their mature trunks are almost black with just a few hints of red, occasionally

overlaid with a white bloom of betulin – the silver of birch bark.

They would look dramatic underplanted with dwarf Hydrangea serrata with their bright autumn foliage, or Japanese acers, that would contrast their form as well as their foliage. Or on heavy soils their white trunks would make a vivid contrast to the redenamelled stems of Cornus alba Sibirica.

Betula ermanii, the Stone Birch, originates in Japan and is larger than its cousins – 1218m. It makes a dramatic specimen tree for a big garden with its orange-pink trunk and white lenticels. In autumn the leaves become a dazzling orange that enriches the colour of the trunk and branches and lights up the whole garden. The selection B. ermanii Mount Zao has a darker, more purple bark and the lenticels become more

complex, forming very evocative patterns that capture the eye, and the camera.

In the birch garden at Yeo Valley owner Sarah Mead has created a close plantation of Betula utilis jacquemontii, under-planted with blue Grape Hyacinths – Muscari. The effect

is very good – so good it stands to be repeated. Even under a single birch the contrast of blue and white is very effective.

Plant the bulbs now, at the same time as the birch, and they will increase and contrast beautifully. Vita would be impressed.

by Sally Gregson DECEMBER and January are the ideal months to plant a tree, or two or three – it depends on the size of the garden.

Undoubtedly birches are among the prettiest. And as you will have read in the accompanying article, plenty of different birches are available.

The place to see them is Stone Lane Gardens on the edge of Dartmoor. They are well worth a winter excursion. The plantation is just recovering from a devastating visit from one of this year’s storms, but thanks to plenty of willing

hands the birches are looking good again. A small tree can be ordered for delivery from its on-site nursery that propagates some of the special and rarer forms of birch. Alders are its other speciality.

When the tree is delivered, remove all the packaging, dunk the roots in a bucket of water, and keep it somewhere cool and dry, but frost-free. If at all possible, ‘heel it in’, that is dig it in somewhere and water it, if it’s not too frosty.

To plant your tree permanently, dig a large, deep hole big enough to

accommodate the existing root system. Position the tree in the hole so that the soil level is the same once it is planted. Mix a few spadefuls of organic matter and a handful of fertiliser into the backfill to help establish the root system. Shake the tree around so that the roots are completely covered and heel in the soil gently.

A stake can then be inserted for the early years of the tree’s life. It holds the root firmly in the ground to avoid rocking and loosening itself. But these days it is not advised to insert a heavy stake alongside young trees. A

simple cane hammered firmly in next to trees up to 1.5m high is enough. Bigger trees up to 2.5m in height should be supported by a stake hammered diagonally into the ground and tied in low down the stem.

And a tree guard is advised against marauding rabbits and deer. Fencing larger, newly planted trees prevents the marauders from nibbling off the bark. Your new tree will need watering in and watered during any dry spells next year. It will soon establish and look beautiful for many years to come.

What the plant doesn’t drink after a quarter of an hour can be tipped away, leaving the plant in a dry saucer. The flower colours are stunning from purest white to darkest reds and purples, and the range of sizes too is from miniatures through to the very large.

The adage of small pot meaning large amounts of flowers is well described by indoor flowering Azaleas. These varieties are potted into relatively small pots, which forces the plant to flower profusely. If looked after correctly, then the flowering time can be very rewarding.

Care must be taken not to let the plant dry out at any stage, as this will cause flowers to abort just as they open, which is very frustrating.

Orchids are a Christmas favourite and despite being more and more popular still have mystique and an exotic feel. They are easier to look after than many believe, with the Cymbidium needing fairly cool conditions with Phalaenopsis and Cambrian liking it slightly warmer. The

The classic Christmas houseplant is, of course, the Poinsettia. The best-known variety has bright red bracts but now there is a vast array of other colours including white, pink, cream and marbled with the foliage also available in a variegated form, too. These best quality plants are compact and bushy. They are sensitive plants and like an even warm temperature away from draughts, and don’t like getting too wet. They will go on for many weeks but to get them to colour up again the following year requires dedication and attention to detail as the bracts colour up only after several weeks of 12 hours light and 12 hours dark a day.

Cyclamen also are a seasonal favourite, and it used to be straightforward with there being distinct hardy and indoor types.

Now many varieties can be used as autumn and early winter bedding plants too. The indoor types like cool conditions and must be watered from the base

Cymbidium are larger growers and have large flower spikes which can last for a very long time. Phalaenopsis have a more sophisticated look to the flower

which again lasts a long time and they will re-flower, too.

Lots of bulbs are around, including Hyacinths with their glorious colours and powerful scent. These come from ‘prepared’ bulbs planted in early September. Our growers grow them as individual pots and then group together those at the same stage to ensure even flowering. We have them as planted bowls but also in individuals if you are doing your own arrangement.

Other bulbs include the powerfully scented Paperwhites, a form of Narcissi, which are so easy to grow and great value, too.

Houseplants make wonderful presents not just at Christmas but at any time of the year.

A NEW auction called Modern Art, presenting an exciting range of contemporary works created post-1880, is coming up at Duke’s Auctioneers.

Acting as the spiritual successor to Duke’s Art & Design Post 1880 sale, this new format places a sharper focus on modern and contemporary paintings, offering collectors a dedicated platform to explore influential artists of the period.

The Modern Art auction on Tuesday, January 20, opens the year with a selection of pieces by renowned painters including Augustus John, Paul Gauguin, Tsuguharu Foujita, Duncan Grant, John Minton and others.

A significant portion of the auction is made up of works from a distinguished single owner private collection, adding depth and rarity to the offering.

STUDENTS in a year 10 Health and Social class at Wey Valley Academy in Weymouth were thrilled to hear a talk by midwife and writer, Anna Kent.

Anna is a humanitarian aid worker, NHS nurse and midwife.

After receiving a Nursing Master’s Degree from the University of Nottingham, she completed a Diploma in Tropical Nursing in London and joined Medecins Sans Frontieres – Doctors Without Borders – in 2007.

She gained her First Degree in Midwifery in 2010 and has worked as a midwife across the world, including South Sudan, Haiti, Bangladesh and the UK. Her books include Frontline

Kent – I want to become a midwife.”

Another said: “I found the humanitarian aid worker perspective fascinating as I want a career in this.”

Anna advised: “Go out and find your passion for helping others and saving lives – working in a different country has enabled me to develop and to grow as a person alongside nurturing those important skills for life.”

Most would struggle to pay surprise car repair bill

TWO-THIRDS (65%) of drivers have had to fork out for unexpected car repair costs in the last year – up from 59% last year, with almost four-in-10 (39%) saying they’d struggle to pay a bill of up to £500, new research from the RAC has revealed.

With the average repair bill now standing at £650, up by £33 from last year, the increased costs are putting drivers’ finances under considerable strain with three-quarters (76%) saying they would find it difficult to find the money for an unexpected repair bill. ​ More than half (54%) say they would struggle to pay a surprise bill of £501-£1,000.

The challenge of meeting unexpected repair bills is greatest among young drivers with nearly six-in-10 (57%) of the under-25s surveyed for the RAC Report on Motoring 2025

saying they would find it hard to afford a bill of up to £500, up from 50% in 2024.

But the pain is also being felt by older drivers with 40% of those aged between 45 and 64 admitting they would struggle with a repair bill of up to £500 – up from 35% last year – and 30% of those aged 65 or over, up from 25% in 2024.

Replacing or repairing tyres is the most common unexpected vehicle cost (54%), followed by brake repair or replacement (26%), suspension repairs (18%), issues with 12-volt batteries (17%) and exterior light problems (16%).

Drivers with older vehicles are more likely to face unexpected repair bills – the rate among those with cars more than 10 years old is 74% compared to 65% overall. And, with the average age of UK cars now at an all-time high of 10

Faced with rising repair costs and worried about unexpectedly high maintenance bills, a minority of drivers admit to taking drastic measures that, while intended to save money, could put themselves, their passengers and others at serious risk.

For example, 12% say they are having their car serviced less frequently than in the past while 5% say they have given up on vehicle servicing altogether, relying solely on the annual MOT to identify problems.

Mullender, said: “With the average cost of an unexpected repair rising to £650 this year, it’s little wonder that so many people are finding it difficult to meet the costs as that’s a bill no one wants.

“Looking after a car by having it serviced at the correct intervals and getting repairs carried out in good time, generally works out far cheaper than having to get a more major repair carried out in a hurry.

“Add to that how difficult it can be these days to get a slot at garage, and drivers face the prospect of having to go without a car for a day or more – seriously hampering their day-to-day routines, especially as so many of us are heavily car-dependent.”

Snow and ice: Get the basics right THE AA is warning drivers to take extra care this winter when snow and ice affects roads.

Shaun Jones, AA Expert Patrol, said: “When snow and ice hit, the roads can quickly become treacherous.

“Stopping distances can increase tenfold on icy surfaces, so slowing down and leaving plenty of space is absolutely vital.

“Drivers should plan ahead, stick to main routes and allow extra time for their journey.

“Before setting off, make

sure your car is winter-ready – clear all windows and mirrors, check your tyres and battery, and keep at least a quarter tank of fuel.

“Pack essentials like warm clothing, food, water and a phone charger in case you get stuck.

“On the road, drive smoothly – avoid harsh braking or acceleration and pull away in second gear to reduce wheel spin.

“If you encounter a skid, steer gently into it and don’t slam on the brakes.

“Use headlights in heavy snow and avoid cruise control.

“Most importantly, if conditions look severe, ask yourself whether the journey is really necessary.

“Sometimes the safest decision is to stay put until the weather improves. Your safety and that of others should

always come first.”

The AA’s key advice for winter driving: n Plan ahead: Check forecasts and traffic updates; stick to gritted routes. n Prepare your car: Clear snow and ice, check tyres and carry emergency supplies. n Drive gently: Use low gears, accelerate and brake gradually, and maintain a safe distance. n Stay alert: Watch for black ice and adjust speed to conditions. n Think safety first: Delay travel if warnings are in place.

Kaiser Chiefs, Groove Armada and Heather Small will be playing Poole Harbour Festival

Big names lined up for summer festival 20 YEARS since they predicted a riot, Kaiser Chiefs are set to headline Poole Harbour Festival next summer.

The Leeds hitmakers feature regularly when festival-goers are asked who they would most like to see at the event.

“We are really excited to bring the Kaiser Chiefs to

Poole – it’s a good job Poole Harbour Festival doesn’t have a roof because they will definitely tear it off!” said festival organiser Serena Wren.

“Every year we canvas the views of our audience and we get so many requests for Kaiser Chiefs – this will be a real treat for the festival’s 10th

anniversary!”

This year’s Poole Harbour Festival won Silver in the Tourism Event/Festival of the Year at the Dorset Tourism Awards and Gold in the Event of the Year at the DMB Tourism Awards.

Organisers have also announced upbeat indie rock

trio Scouting For Girls, M People singer Heather Small, longstanding festival favourites Dodgy, UK garage legends Artful Dodger and 90s pop heart-throbs East 17 among the headline acts.

A stellar DJ bill includes Groove Armada, Judge Jules, Seb Fontaine and The Prodigy’s Leeroy Thornhill, as well as dance music legend Dave Pearce and Phats and Small singer Ben Ofoedu.

Last year’s festival at Baiter Park attracted 15,000 people over the weekend.

All roads lead to beer festival REAL ale fans are looking forward to the 37th Dorchester Beerex, coming soon to Dorchester’s Corn Exchange.

West Dorset Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and charity partners Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary Club are organising the event.

Cerne Abbas brewery is continuing to support the festival as main sponsor and will bring a selection of its beers, including one-off specials.

84 cask ales from around the UK and a large selection of traditional ciders and Perry’s will be on offer at the event on Friday and Saturday, February 6-7.

The festival has always raised money for local good causes and this year’s main charity is People First Dorset.

The charity aims to assist people with learning disabilities through friendship clubs, and to reduce social isolation and promote independence and wellbeing.

The festival has raised just over £300,000 for local good causes thanks to the generosity of local companies and breweries through barrel sponsorship and raffle prize donations.

Money from the raffle will once again go to Dorchester Youth and Community Centre in Kings Road, Dorchester.

West Dorset CAMRA and 2026 Beerex committee chair, Bruce Mead, said: “Planning for the 2026 Beerex is in full swing, and with the event coinciding with the 50th anniversary of West Dorset CAMRA we are hoping to have some very special celebration beers on offer.”

Customers can expect music in the evenings with a party atmosphere on the Saturday evening and beer, banter and chatter on the lunchtime

sessions.

The festival attracts a wide variety of customers of all ages and backgrounds, with many visiting the town from afar.

Seating is available for more than 100 customers upstairs.

Tickets priced £12 include a commemorative glass, colour programme listing all beers and ciders with tasting notes and two free half pint drink tokens.

Panto-goers have a ball at Cinderella

by Jane Toomer CINDERELLA, this year’s panto at Bournemouth Pavilion, delivered exactly what any family would hope for from a festive night out – big laughs, dazzling costumes, catchy musical numbers and enough audience participation to keep everyone happy, from toddlers to grandparents.

From the moment the Fairy Godmother – Melanie Walters, from television’s Gavin and Stacey – appeared on stage in a burst of glitter, the show established its warm, high-

energy tone.

The loveable Buttons, played

by Noel Brodie, quickly got the audience on his side, in both storyline and songs. He took control of the show with adlibs that had the audience roaring with laughter and his stage

presence.

Cinderella (Olivia Birchenough) was instantly likeable, sweet and caring with a strong voice that lifted every musical moment. Her chemistry with Prince Charming (Jack Wilcox), royal and regal in stature, felt genuine. Their duets were a highlight.

David Zachary played an excellent role as Dandini.

Of course, the real stars, as in any good panto, were the Ugly Stepsisters – Melody Hard-up, played by Jamie Morris, and Harmony Hard-up, played by

Tarot Joseph. Outrageously costumed and brilliantly over-the-top, they stole nearly every scene with sharp improvisation and quickfire jokes. Their banter with the audience was fearless and had the crowd roaring.

ACTRESS Isabella Kibble, who played the title role in Sleeping Beauty at Lighthouse Poole last year, is returning this year to play Alice in Dick Whittington.

“I had an amazing time last year,” she said, genuinely excited. “It’s a really special building and this company is just wonderful to work for – really lovely.

“I had so much fun and just really appreciated being in such a warm, creative and supportive environment. It was just such a blast.”

Made in Poole especially for Lighthouse audiences, Dick Whittington is the latest in a run of hit productions in recent years that has included national Panto Award winners Aladdin and Cinderella.

Written and directed by CBeebies’ Chris Jarvis and with production design by James Smith, it’s the original pantomime adventure story – a quest for fame and fortune on the streets of London, with a slight detour to Poole Quay.

She has been pursuing a showbiz path since childhood, training in Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting, and landing her first major

West End role in Lucy Bailey’s acclaimed adaptation of Witness for the Prosecution.

Sleeping Beauty was her first pantomime role as an adult and it rekindled her

passion for the artform.

“When I was young, I just remembered it being the most magical experience ever and that’s exactly what it was in Poole last year,” she said.

“I have a feeling that Alice is going to be a bit of a feisty gal. She's quite different to Rose in Sleeping Beauty.

“For one thing, she's grown up in London instead of with the squirrels on Brownsea Island so maybe she has a different view of things.

“She's going to be fun and have a good sense of humour, and I'm really looking forward to working with Chris again to bring Alice to life on stage!”

And, of course, Alice was a real person…

“Yes, you don't often get in touch with real people through pantomime. It's amazing that the story has translated into such a big and famous story today.”

So, did you know the original story?

“I did know the story, yes.

There’s a cat I can’t wait to meet – played by the fantastic Corben who I loved working with last year – and, of course, Dick has got his infamous bindle. The most famous bindle in history!

“I'm just really excited to be playing Alice and bringing that story to life in Poole.”

SWANAGE Drama Company, following on from last year’s Jack and the Beanstalk, is back at the Mowlem in Swanage with this year’s pantomime, Aladdin.

Widow Twankey runs the local washeteria with her two sons, Aladdin and Wishey Washee.

They are poor and need some luck – and money.

The mysterious Abanazar arrives with a plan to find a

lamp – with magical powers and a genie!

Will all this help Aladdin, who unwittingly has fallen in love with the Sultan’s daughter, or will Abanazar use the lamp for his own evil ends?

Aladdin is on Friday and Saturday, January 9-10, and Friday and Saturday, January 16-17, at 7.30pm with matinees both Saturdays at 2pm.

Supermum with a seat in row x HAVING fostered 50 children in 25 years, as well as bringing up her own two boys, and now helping with two grandchildren, some might think Helen Warren is looking forward to a bit of a rest – but not a bit of it!

She’ll be back at Lighthouse Poole this Christmas to watch panto with her extended family, as she has done every year since 1998, and next year she’ll be at every performance of every show staged by Strictly Stage Theatre School.

“And all from the same row of seats,” says the friendly fostering ‘super mum’ from Canford Heath in between passing snacks and drinks to granddaughter, Lily.

“We always sit at the back, in row X, as close to seat 32 as we can get. It started because we were conscious that our own children and foster children may need to move around or leave the performance due to their own needs.

“Equally, we didn’t want to disturb other theatre-goers, and their enjoyment of what they were watching.”

For 27 years, since she first brought her eldest son to panto at the age of three, Lighthouse has been at the heart of her incredible care giving. Just as she found a love of live theatre after being taken to panto as a child, so did her sons. The youngest, Alex, is now a performing arts teacher at

Strictly Stage Theatre School.

“And it’s not just the shows, we come to Lighthouse to have a coffee with friends, or to have lunch. When I first started coming here the cafe wasn’t on the ground floor, it was upstairs. It has changed dramatically over the years, for the better I have to say!”

Helen is very clear that bringing the young people in the care of her and husband Ken to Lighthouse is central to their growth and all-round development. Over the past 25 years they have watched numerous children, from varying backgrounds and life experiences, turn their lives around, finish school and become happy, confident young adults.

“By giving them guidance, boundaries, love, action and consequences, the transformation can be incredible,” she explains.

“When you first bring a child to the theatre, it can be very intimidating, especially to looked after children. When you watch television, it’s in the confines of your own room, but it’s a completely different ball game when the television effectively comes to life on stage.

“For example, if you’ve got somebody in a panto that falls over, or a villain to be booed, these children can be on tenterhooks because they don’t know what to expect, they don’t understand. Are they hurt? Should someone help

them?

“What we’ve found is that they grow to love the theatre and they become your next generation of theatre-goers because they continue the passion of live entertainment.

For us, it’s about creating new memories and experiences that will stay with them for life.”

Many of Helen’s young charges have gone on to appear on stage at Lighthouse having found a love of performing as well as watching live shows.

She says: “It enables them to express themselves without being judged. I remember I had a phone call from a headteacher one day who told me they’d just heard a child singing. She’d never seen this child skip. Never seen this child sing. Never seen this child happy. Then one day she heard them singing.

“It started with a class at Strictly Stage Theatre School.

That child grew and was

adopted. They still love music, dance, theatre – they go to theatre all the time now.”

Like many of the children – and sometimes their parents as well – that have lived with Helen and Ken, that child has stayed in touch with them well into adulthood and as Helen shares stories about them her pride is palpable. It’s not long before the tears flow freely.

She adds: “Oh, I’m a crier!

We feel it is hugely important to allow the child to flourish and thrive through their own passions, which is why clubs and activities are so important to each and every one of them.

Encouraging a child to go on stage in front of 600 people and deliver a line, or sing, or dance, that’s a huge thing.

That’s why I come to every performance of every show, and always will do, to show them support and appreciation of their hard work.

“I cry at every show!”
