Find lost presents in new festive tale

N WINTER mornings, when frost lingers on the grass and the sky stretches wide and pale, Salisbury Plain has a quiet magic all of its own. It is this sense of wonder children’s author Benji Barkley has captured so warmly in his latest book, The Lost Presents of Wiltshire. Benji, who lives locally with his wife, daughter and their energetic border terrier, has long drawn inspiration from the landscapes on his doorstep. Politico Marlene quizzes MP during his visit to refurbed city care home

events, surgeries, visits, talks and simply being around the city, particularly on our Saturday market day. "The morning was a wonderful way for residents to further engage with local and countrywide politics, for Marlene to have her wish granted, and for our MP to see our newly extended home." The 18-year-old care home underwent a huge refurbishment project this year, coupled with the completion of the extension, taking the overall number of bedrooms to 95.

Blood bikes' £1,000 boost

A VOLUNTEER-LED charity that provides a free, out-ofhours emergency blood courier service for NHS hospitals has been bowled over after receiving nearly £1,000. Serv Wessex Blood Runners use their own motorcycles and cars to transport blood, platelets, plasma, medical samples and donor breast milk. Members were busy collecting on December 13 at Tesco in Amesbury where they raised £946.95, pictured above. “A huge thank you to everyone who donated during the Serv Wessex Blood Runners collection,” they said. “Your generosity will help keep this vital service on the road and supporting our NHS.”

Flood rescue

DRIVERS are advised not to cross fords after a vehicle got stuck at Fordingbridge. The South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, assisted by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, was called to Godshill where a car had got stuck. A spokesperson said: “Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of our fire and rescue service colleagues and initially passers-by, the three occupants of the vehicle were able to be rescued unscathed.”

Dozens turn out for festive crafs and pop-up Nativity!

OZENS of people have enjoyed a Christmas crafting session with Salisbury Salvation Army. Children and adults piled into the venue in Salt Lane on Saturday to discover tables laid out with festive-themed activities and a pop-up come-as-you-are Nativity play. In total, 75 people gathered to enjoy the seasonal event which also featured music, competitions, stories and well-earned refreshments.

Killer Alfie Miller jailed for 14 years

URDERER Alfie Miller has been jailed for a minimum of 14 years after stabbing a father multiple times in a “brutal and violent” attack in Salisbury. The 22-year-old, of Willow Drive, Durrington, was found guilty of murdering Darren Hughes, 52, following a three-week trial at Winchester Crown Court. On May 2, Miller agreed to meet with Darren at Darren’s address in Davies Road, Longhedge, the court heard. The pair consumed alcohol and various drugs including cocaine and cannabis through the night. At around 7.45am the following morning, Miller stabbed Darren multiple times in the bathroom with a kitchen knife, before leaving the address and shouting for neighbours to call police. Miller admitted

manslaughter, denying murder. He initially claimed Darren had made repeated, unwanted advances towards him and he had been acting in self-defence, before relying on a defence of ‘loss of control’ in court. However, this was dismissed by HHJ Dugdale and a jury found Miller guilty of murder. In a tribute to Darren, his family said the outcome was the only one they could have accepted and they urged people commenting on social media to consider the impact on his son. “Please could we ask people that if you are tempted to make negative or speculative comments on social media that you stop before you type,” they added. “Please ask yourself how you would feel if this was a member of your own family. Darren had a young son who does not deserve to read those types of comments about his much-loved dad.

“We want to thank Wiltshire Police and the Crown Prosecution for their hard work in securing the correct verdict. “We also want to thank all those people who we know tried so hard to help Darren in what we know must have been a horribly shocking and distressing situation for them. “No one deserves to die in the horrific and violent way that

Darren did, and this had been very hard for us all to accept. “We can only ask now that we can be left in peace to grieve and come to terms with the loss of Darren.” Senior investigating officer DI Darren Ambrose, from Wiltshire Police's major crime investigation team, said: “This was a brutal and violent attack against a defenceless victim, and my thoughts remain with Darren’s friends and family at this difficult time. “Miller left the flat following the attack, leaving Darren to die in his own bathroom. Upon his arrest, he immediately admitted stabbing Darren but claimed to be acting in self-defence. “I am pleased the jury found him guilty of murdering Darren. This is the only outcome that truly reflected this horrendous crime and has at least provided Darren’s family with a feeling that justice has been done.”

Fears over "huge" turbine plan

N 18 METRE-HIGH wind turbine would be a “huge, ugly” addition to the landscape between key historical sites, it has been claimed. Wiltshire Council has lodged a planning application to install the renewable energy generator at the High Post Salt Store, in Amesbury. However, Salisbury City Councillor Andrew Suddards (Con, Harnham West) has branded the scheme a “towering blot on our beautiful countryside landscape” and advised the council to look at other options for renewable energy. “Erecting a huge tower at one of the highest hills in a historic area that sits between Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge is literally the height of muddled thinking by Wiltshire Council

that does not understand how net zero pursuits need to be balanced," he said. “I hope others will join me in voicing objection.” Fellow city councillor Annie Riddle (Ind, Harnham West) is also encouraging residents to comment on the plans before the December 26 deadline. She added: “It would be visible from miles around including Old Sarum monument. Some won’t mind this, others will. “Parish councils in the Woodford Valley are objecting, as is the council’s own landscape officer.” The landscape officer has placed a ‘holding objection’ on the scheme due to the lack of information and requested an appraisal to understand the extent of the turbine’s visual effects along with any

mitigation measures that may be required, such as non-reflective blades. Historic England is also concerned about the turbine’s potential impact on several significant heritage assets including Stonehenge, Avebury and associated sites, Ogbury Camp, Old Sarum, the remains of Old Sarum Castle, Salisbury Cathedral and Heale House Park and Garden. Inspector of ancient monuments, Melanie Barge, noted that the application did not meet national planning

requirements. “The application is not supported with a Heritage Impact Assessment,” she said. “As a result, the application fails to provide the required understanding in a level of detail proportionate to the assets’ importance and sufficient to understand the potential impact of the proposal on that significance.” n To comment on the application – visit wiltshire.gov. uk and search reference PL/2025/6175 on the Wiltshire Council planning portal.

Work to start on £23 million A36 traffic light upgrades

Work on the roundabouts through Salisbury is set to begin on January 19

HE first phase of a £23 million project to improve the A36 through Salisbury will get underway in the new year - with some lane and road closures planned. National Highways said the investment, over the next six years, aims to improve traffic flows around the St Paul’s, St Mark’s and Castle roundabouts. The current, 32-year-old signals have reached the end of their operational life and will be replaced with "modern, energyefficient systems which will adapt in real time to waiting vehicles rather than following a fixed timer", the organisation said. Starting on January 19, new adaptive traffic signals will be installed at the Castle and St Mark’s roundabouts, with a similar scheme planned for the St Paul’s roundabout in early summer. Further road improvements along the strategic route in the coming years will include: n Resurfacing at the Castle and St Paul’s roundabouts and Wilton road; n Improved road markings and pavement renewal; n Upgrade of the Southampton Road pedestrian crossing; n Strengthening work to the

Maltings access bridge; n Repairs to the Avon River bridge; n Replacement of the Victoria Road footbridge to improve accessibility; n Removal of the Wyndham Road footbridge, while all alternative options are explored. The most impactful work has been planned to avoid Salisbury’s 2027 celebrations to mark its 800th Royal Charter year. National Highways route manager, Chris Hilldrup, said: "The A36 is the main arterial route through Salisbury – carrying an average of 33,500 vehicles a day between the College and St Mark’s roundabouts – and helps connect the south coast with Bristol, Bath and London. "Given insurmountable limitations on constructing a

bypass for the city, it’s vital that we continue to maintain and improve the route, both for the economy, the travelling public and local communities. "As part of this investment we’re carrying out a number of schemes which will reduce congestion, improve safety, create more reliable journey times and ultimately support Salisbury’s long-term economic growth." The first phase of the traffic signal work will take around 11 weeks, National Highways said, with the second upgrade at the St Paul’s roundabout set to run between June 1 and July 27, followed by resurfacing work at the Castle and St Paul’s roundabouts and Wilton road between July 14 and 31. with diversions in place. Maria Testa Borjon, National Highways project manager, added: "We appreciate that road closures can be frustrating, but we’re unable to carry out the work while the road is fully open to traffic and we’re carefully planning the programme with Wiltshire Council, Salisbury City Council and Southern Gas Networks, who are carrying out major gas mains renewals along the A36. "We’ll be completing a number of the schemes this year, and are currently programming work to continue next year and beyond, although we are avoiding significant road closures in 2027 when the city will be celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. "In the meantime, we’re working closely with our partners to keep disruption to a minimum and thank drivers in advance for their co-operation and patience and advise people to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys." Veterans handed keys to new homes and independence - just in time for

Veterans have worked for 12 months to build their own homes - and learn trades that will help them gain jobs and independence

ETERANS at risk of homelessness moved into new homes - just in time for Christmas - thanks to a scheme run by a charity in Wiltshire. The group, who have been supported by homelessness charity ALABARÉ, have moved into new homes they’ve helped build at the Drummond Park development, in Ludgershall. For the last 12 months, four veterans have been learning construction trades, with the support of industry partners Lovell Homes, as part of ALABARÉ’s Veterans’ Self Build scheme. For him, this is life-changing. "Another of them says he wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for this scheme. It’s given him purpose. "It’s no mean feat coming onto a building site five days a week, and keep that vision in their head that they’ll get that job and that property at the end of the scheme. Fake Labubus and illegal cigarettes

ORE than 700 unsafe, fake Labubu products, 30,000 illegal cigarettes and hundreds of illegal vapes were among seizures by Trading Standards officials in Wiltshire this year. The body, which aims to protect consumers from dodgy traders and products, said it has helped county consumers avoid losses of around £100,000. The team received 2,748 consumer referrals, made 677 preventative visits to homes, tackled 32 incidents of doorstep crime and responded to 32 reports of underage sales. Officers have carried out 75 business inspections. During these visits more than 30,000 illegal cigarettes, 5.6kg in illegal rolling tobacco and 450 illegal vapes have been seized. They seized more than 700 unsafe, counterfeit Labubu products and secured the

surrender of £46,000 worth of counterfeit handbags. Legal action has played a key role in protecting the public, they said, with six closure orders issued, five defendants convicted and 20 more involved in ongoing court proceedings. Convicted offenders have been ordered to carry out 1,200 hours of unpaid work, and courts have awarded £56,414 in

compensation to victims. Through the interventions, the team protected consumers from losses of around £100,000 – either refunded directly or prevented from falling into the hands of criminals. Wiltshire Council cabinet member for environment, Cllr Paul Sample, praised the team’s efforts over the past 12 months. "They continue to deliver

outstanding results in a compassionate way," Cllr Sample said. "Their work ensures we have safe and resilient communities. "The team has tackled everything from rogue traders to supporting vulnerable residents. "Their proactive work not only brings criminals to justice but prevents harm before it happens."

Old Sarum site selected for new £23 million police base in south Wiltshire

LONG-PLANNED project aimed at reshaping policing in south Wiltshire has taken a decisive step forward - with Salisbury set to play host to a new £23 million police base. Wiltshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Philip Wilkinson, has confirmed the purchase of six acres of land near the historic hillfort at Old Sarum, clearing the way for the creation of a Southern Policing Hub designed to serve the city and the surrounding communities for decades to come. The new hub will become a modern, purpose-built home for Wiltshire Police officers, staff and volunteers, bringing together response and neighbourhood teams along with specialist and support services under one roof, the PCC said. Full costs are yet to be confirmed, but the PCC’s

financial plan to 2028/29 includes “£23.552 million for a large southern hub”. The hub will be funded through borrowing – a standard approach for long-term public sector investment. There are currently no plans for a third custody unit at the site, though the land allows for future expansion if needed. Design work will begin immediately with an outline planning application expected in autumn 2026. For residents, the promise is of greater police visibility, faster response times and a facility better suited to the demands of

21st-century policing. The land purchase marks a milestone in the Safer South Wiltshire programme, a process started in 2021, when Mr Wilkinson commissioned a full review of the force’s buildings and operational estate. That review, revisited by chief constable Catherine Roper in 2023, concluded existing arrangements in the south of the county were no longer fit for current or future needs. After assessing a number of potential locations, Old Sarum emerged as the preferred site in 2022. Its strategic position, strong

transport links and scope for future expansion made it the standout choice, the PCC said. "This has been a four-year journey of detailed planning, careful assessment," Mr Wilkinson went on. "Securing this land is a clear demonstration of our long-term commitment to delivering a policing facility that is accessible, visible and operationally effective for the communities of south Wiltshire, even in the face of a difficult financial climate." While financial pressures facing policing remain significant, both the PCC and the chief constable have stressed that investing in the right estate is essential to maintaining effective frontline services. Chief constable Roper said the hub would give officers "the base they need to work smarter, adapt to changing crime demand and provide greater presence to our communities".

AMILIES are being reminded that there is just over a month left to apply for primary school places for children starting school in September 2026. Applications can be submitted online until the national deadline date of January 15 for both primary schools and infant to junior transfers. Parents and carers can also submit paper applications which can be obtained from Wiltshire Council’s customer services team on 01225 713010. The National Offer Day for primary and junior school is April 16. Online applicants will be sent an email on National Offer Day confirming the outcome, while those applying using the paper form will be sent a letter. Driver led police on 120mph chase before running out of petrol A SALISBURY man has pleaded guilty to multiple offences following a 47-mile pursuit earlier this week. Ryan Moore, 20, of Carmelite Way, appeared at Salisbury Remand Court on December 11, where he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, having no insurance, failing to provide an evidential sample, and using fraudulent registration plates. At around 11.05pm on December 9, police spotted a black Mercedes A Class on Avon Approach in Salisbury, where it was seen taking part in a suspected drugs deal. There was also information to suggest the vehicle was being driven on cloned plates. The Mercedes, driven by Moore, immediately failed to stop for officers and led them on a lengthy pursuit through and

out of Salisbury on the A30, onto the A303 and then onto the M3. Officers from Hampshire joined the pursuit on the motorway as Moore reached speeds of 120mph, weaving in and out of traffic, as well as entering a stretch of roadworks. Moore eventually stopped at Fleet Services where he ran out of fuel. He then failed a drugs wipe for cannabis, and the vehicle was confirmed to be on cloned plates. Following his guilty plea, Moore was remanded into custody to await sentencing in January. PC Pedliham, of Salisbury Community Policing Team, said: “I am pleased that Moore has entered a guilty plea and has been remanded in custody. “By leading officers on such a lengthy pursuit, he showed

Controversial plan for new Tesco in pub car park turned down

LANNERS have turned down a new Tesco convenience store in a Salisbury pub car park. The supermarket giant was seeking permission to demolish garages in the car park of The Greyfisher Pub on New Bridge Road and replace them with a new retail unit. City councillor Annie Riddle (Ind, Harnham West) has been vocal in her opposition to the scheme, encouraging residents to speak out. She raised particular concern about the future of the One Stop on Netherhampton Road, as its post office is a vital and well-used amenity. Responding to the latest

decision, she said in a statement: “Tesco’s plan for a store in the car park of the Greyfisher was rejected by Wiltshire Council southern area planning committee. “I couldn’t be there but my statement opposing the plan was kindly read out by my fellow Harnham councillor Andrew Suddards. “I hope Tesco and the owners Greene King understand the strength of local feeling and don’t come back with an appeal. “All your Harnham councillors would be happy to meet with Greene King if there are other potential uses for part of their site that wouldn’t increase our traffic problems.”

Cllr Suddards added: “Pleased that Wiltshire Council has opposed this planning application, which I, city council planning committee, other Harnham councillors and local residents opposed. “I support Greyfishers desire to enhance its business and make more use of its land at the back, but shoehorning this bland designed store, that would further exacerbate New Bridge Road traffic problems is not the answer. Greyfishers would do well to reach out to collaborate with councillors and residents to devise a better scheme that meets Green King’s business needs, brings community benefit and fit in with the local

residential area – something we could all support. We do want our pubs and businesses to thrive.” Residents have also opposed to the new store. Sarah Andrews said: “We don’t need one as there’s a huge one down Southampton Road and one in the city centre.” Tim Bilton added: “That road is dangerous enough now. If there is to be another shop in Harnham then it needs to be on one of the new housing estates.” Adrian Cousins said the plans are a “car accident waiting to happen”, while Penny Wyeth commented that there are already other shops in the area that meet local need.

Salisbury school pupils safe and well after minibus crash SALISBURY Cathedral School pupils were all safe and unharmed after a minibus crash in the city earlier this month. The school confirmed all were well after the incident, at around 8am on December 12. “We would like to acknowledge the accident involving a Salisbury Cathedral School minibus on the A345 outside The Stones Hotel this morning," a school

Marshals ready to help people get home safely on New year's Eve

AXI marshals have been deployed in Salisbury over the festive period - and will be out on New year's Eve to help people get home safely and support the nighttime economy. The marshals began work on December 12, managing the main taxi areas in the city centre, controlling queues and helping vulnerable people find licensed transport. The initiative costs £4,200 and is funded through the ASB Hotspot Action Fund, managed by the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). On December 31 AEC Protection, currently providing ASB wardens in the city, will deploy two marshals from 10pm to 4.30am. The marshals are linked directly to the council’s CCTV and the neighbourhood police team. Street pastors will also be on hand, carrying a kit including bottles of water, lollipops and emergency space blankets, as well as a dustpan and brush to clear up broken glass. PCC Philip Wilkinson said: “During the festive period, we want to encourage people to visit all venues knowing they will be safe and can get home safely. “My office has funded two welfare and vulnerability

Fees are set to change for council services A MAJOR shake-up of fees for council services is coming next year. Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet passed the framework at its meeting on December 9, covering a wide range of discretionary services - but excluding council tax, business rates, housing rents and parking charges. The council said it aims to

make pricing fairer, clearer and more consistent for residents across the county and outlines how fees are calculated, what factors are considered, and how charges are reviewed each year. Proposals for 2026/27 have already been published but may change slightly following government updates and index adjustments. Final charges will be

confirmed when the council approves its 2026/27 budget early next year. Residents can expect fees for a broad spectrum of services including licensing and public protection, waste services, leisure services, registration and ceremony services, highways services, and planning. Cabinet member for finance at Wiltshire Council, Cllr Gavin

Grant, said the fees help fund the council’s wider priorities in the medium and long term. “Having a clear and consistent approach to setting our fees and charges is essential. Arrests after police patrols over festive period

OLICE carried out patrols in Salisbury during the first two weeks of December as part of an operation to tackle retail crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) - leading to four arrests. Operation Dasher saw officers apprehend a prolific offender for going equipped with a foil-lined bag, another for breaching a criminal behaviour order (CBO) and two others for shoplifting., Wiltshire Police said. One of those suspects was charged, remanded and sentenced to 16 weeks behind bars. The operation is part the

ongoing Winter of Action campaign by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and Wiltshire Police and has included high-visibility patrols, including joint patrols with Salisbury BID and community and business engagement. Businesses have received Christmas cards from the recently launched Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP), which brings together the OPCC, police, Salisbury BID, local authorities and businesses. PCC Phil Wilkinson said: “Retail crime, ASB and violence in the nighttime

£366,000 secured for solar panels on NHS properties SALISBURY NHS Foundation Trust has secured £366,000 to install solar panels. The cash comes from the This Great British Energy Solar Scheme, which supports NHS trusts as they bid to cut energy costs across the estate. And it will enable the Salisbury Trust to install new solar panels across selected rooftops. Once fully operational, the panels are expected to help save around £45,000 annually, generating clean electricity and supporting the trust’s commitment to the

NHS Net Zero agenda. Deputy head of estates, Thomas Sneddon, said: “This funding empowers us to significantly build on our existing, successful solar generation. “It is a clear ‘win-win’ situation that benefits the trust, our patients and the wider environment.” The national programme supports 34 NHS trusts and around 260 sites across the country, tackling the rising cost of energy bills, which have almost doubled since 2019.
