Swimmers brave chilly Somerset waters to raise money for air ambulance charity

D

OZENS of open-water swimmers took to chilly Somerset waters this month to raise money for a worthwhile cause. A total of 40 brave swimmers donned their finest festive swim caps as they took the plunge at the Christmas Cracker Chill Swim, held at the Vobster Quay open-water swimming and scuba diving venue, near Radstock. Together, the dip raised £1,400 for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA). DSAA volunteers Helen and Nic Jeffris, alongside Dasher, the charity’s mascot, were among those joining the fun. Amy Stanton, Vobster Quay owner, said: "We’re thrilled that so many brave open water swimmers joined us for what has become one of our favourite events of the year. "Since our very first Christmas Cracker Chill Swim in 2022, we’ve raised thousands of pounds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, and we’re thrilled to have extended that total even further with

another £1,400 donated to this worthy charity. "The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is a charity very close to our hearts and our Chill Swim is a great opportunity for us to show them just how much we love and value what they do." Vobster Quay has supported the DSAA charity for over a decade, raising more than £14,000 since 2011 through collection boxes, festive events, and more. Charlotte Humber, DSAA supporter engagement officer for Somerset, said: "A huge thank you to Vobster Quay for hosting such a brilliant event, and to every participant who braved the chilly waters. "The funds raised will directly support DSAA, helping our crews deliver life-saving care when it matters most. We’re incredibly

Somerset 'shedder' makes final for top national award

M

Shedders Darren and Peter were in London for the ceremony

EMBERS of the Burnham and Highbridge Men's Shed traded the confines of their workshop for the halls of Westminster last month for a special ceremony. Shedders Darren Paul and Peter Kelbrick were at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday, November 27, for the UK Men’s Sheds Association Annual Awards Ceremony. Darren was on a shortlist of three for the Association's Shedder of the Year Award. A spokesperson for the group said "just to reach this position against national competition was a tremendous achievement" for Darren, from Burnham. "His nomination for the

award came as recognition of his unstinting commitment to B&H Men’s Shed and the local community," they added. "As part of this, Darren’s work with local schools and wildlife charities are legendary. His energy and enthusiasm drive forward Shed projects, including the current reorganising of the Shed, and he is incredibly supportive of both his fellow Shedders and visiting volunteers." As well as some worthwhile recognition, the group said the event was an opportunity to meet other shedders and listen to keynote speakers in the prestigious setting of the Palace of Westminster, making it "an unforgettable experience".

Hundreds turn out for opening of new Dunelm store in Yeovil after fire

H

UNDREDS of happy shoppers braved the cold to queue outside ahead of the new-look Dunelm store in Yeovil opening - more than 12 months after a devastating fire closed the branch. Special goodie bags were on offer, as well as prizes hidden around the refurbished store, in the Quedam Centre, on Tuesday, December 16. The new shop has been months in the making, after the roof was badly damaged by a fire in September last year. Now, the 24,000 sq ft shop has a new look - and new departments - with firefighters

who helped tackle the blaze helping cut the ribbon. Ahead of the opening, store coach Kelly Warnock, said: “Re-opening our Yeovil store is a really special moment for all of us. “The fire was devastating for our team and for the community, and it’s been a long journey to get to this point. “While our colleagues were redeployed to nearby stores, we’ve all been looking forward to the day we could come back home and work together again.” New features on offer at Dunelm in Yeovil include the Pausa Café and a made-tomeasure department.

Town pub attack A MAN has been arrested after an alleged assault at a Bridgwater pub which left the victim with "serious injuries". The victim, a man in his mid-20s, was taken to hospital with a laceration to the ear after an altercation in a High Street pub at around 11.55pm on December 12. "The suspect has been described as a white man, with dark hair and short facial hair, who was wearing a black hooded top, black jogging bottoms, and black footwear," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said. "CCTV enquiries have been carried out, and we are now appealing for anybody who was in the bar at around that time to come forward with information which could assist our enquiries." A man, 32, has been arrested on suspicion of assault by beating and assault causing grievous bodily harm while investigations continue. He has been bailed until January 5. Call police on 101, reference 5225348523.

Cooker fire

UNATTENDED items left on a cooker led to fire crews being called to a village on the Somerset/Devon border. Crews from Taunton and Wellington were sent to the scene, in Clayhidon, at just after noon on Monday, December 15, after reports of smoke from a property. On arrival, the firefighters got to work extinguishing a fire using breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet, a safety jet, a thermal image camera, a positive pressure ventilation fan and a triple extension ladder. A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the fire was caused by unattended items on the cooker.

Changes to the road system in Bridgwater have proved controversial

Controversial Bridgwater oneway system to be reviewed

A

CONTROVERSIAL one-way system in Bridgwater is to be reviewed. Somerset Council has agreed to take another look at the implementation of a new system in the town – along with parking rules. It comes after the scheme, part of the government-funded Celebration Mile project, was installed earlier this year – causing a backlash from motorists and businesses who said it was causing delays and affecting trade. The council said the plans were inherited from the former Sedgemoor District Council, and were aimed at improving the area for visitors, including the cycling and walking provision. Despite the one-way system in Salmon Parade and East Quay being “widely consulted on and completed earlier this year”, members at a Full Council meeting this week voted to launch a review of the changes. As well as the one-way system, the review will also consider the reinstatement of parking on Salmon Parade, removed as part of the project.

The decision, based on an amended motion proposed by Councillor Leigh Redman, comes after concerns were raised by businesses, residents, the Bridgwater Town Deal Board and local Somerset Council members, as well as petitions submitted by businesses and the public, calling for the one-way system to be reversed. The scheme, which was delayed and the subject of claims the work was “not good enough”, was branded “an absolute shambles” by opposition councillors, and condemned by large numbers of town traders and motorists. However, the Lib Dem administration said it had inherited the plans from the Conservtiave-run Sedgemoor District Council, but would look at the changes. Lead member for economic development, planning and assets, Councillor Mike Rigby, said: “We have heard the frustration of many Bridgwater residents concerning the Salmon Parade and East Quay elements of the Celebration Mile. “Normally these sorts of changes take time to bed in, but we accept that local people want

us to look again at this, and that is what we have agreed to do. “If it’s possible to make this better by making changes then we will of course do that, that’s what the review will look at. “To be clear, it will consider reinstating parking on Salmon parade at the earliest opportunity, as well as reviewing the direction of one-way traffic on both Salmon Parade and East Quay, while prioritising pedestrian safety at the Eastover Town Bridge Junction. “It is important to recognise that the core objective of the project was pedestrian safety through the town centre, as well as improving the viability of town centre businesses by improving the shopping and visitor experience.” Results of the review, which will garner views of businesses and residents, will be reported to the council within four months, including a proposed timetable for any changes. The Celebration Mile project, creating a pathway through the town between the railway station and the docks, also included wider pavements, new street furniture, lighting and planters.

MP calls on delivery firm Evri to improve services amid claims of lost packages

D

ELIVERY drivers are struggling this Christmas - leading to a raft of stories about lost parcels, or packages being delivered to the wrong address, and more. Now, a Somerset MP has written to the chief executive of a leading parcel company over constituents' complaints of "service failures". Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) has written to Martijn de Lange, the boss of parcel firm Evri, demanding answers over delivery "failures" - and how things can improve. "Many have told me that they struggle to identify the location of their parcels from a photo that is not their front door," she said. "With the Christmas season upon us, I fully appreciate the additional pressures placed upon your operations. However, my constituents … your customers, rely on the safe and secure delivery of their parcels. "Having paid for the service, it is reasonable that they

experience reliable and accurate service as a minimum expectation." Evri, which delivers around four million parcels each day during busy periods, said it was working hard to ensure parcels are delivered correctly and on time. But the MP also requested Mr de Lange and Evri "urgently investigates" concerns raised, and confirm what "changes you intend to make going forward to prevent continued service failures". Addressing the letter, the MP added: "While no doubt there are dedicated, hard-working Evri delivery drivers who are going to great lengths to make sure customers are receiving their parcels safely and on time, the number of mis-deliveries reported lately is simply unacceptable. "This appears to be a nationwide problem this year. I urge the company’s leadership to review their processes and ensure that customers receive the service they deserve."

MP Sarah Dyke, inset, has called on parcel firm Evri to improve services in Glastonbury and Somerton PICTURES: Evri/Sarah Dyke

The MP's letter came ahead of BBC Panorama investigation entitled Evri: Where's my Parcel?, which looked into the pressure put on drivers to hit targets in order to make money. An Evri spokesperson said: "Our 30,000 couriers are

working hard to deliver around four million parcels a day in our busiest weeks of the year. "We recognise how special every parcel is, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure that customers in Glastonbury and Somerton receive their parcels.”

Ham Hill has a new visitor centre!

A

NEW visitor centre at Ham Hill – a landmark site throughout Somerset’s history – is now open. Set in the Lime Kiln Car Park, the centre is a major milestone in the Uncovering Ham Hill’s past for its Future project. It has been made possible with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, alongside the Wolfson Foundation. “Their generous funding has helped us fund the building and preserve and celebrate Ham Hill’s rich heritage for generations to come,” a spokesperson said. The Visitor Centre offers a range of facilities, including the Limekiln Café, with income generated helping support Ham Hill and its future. Opening hours at the café over the festive period are: December 26: 10am until 2pm December 27 to 31: 8am until 4pm January 1: 10am until 2pm January 2: 8am until 4pm The centre also boasts a retail space featuring Somersetproduced items, exhibition spaces showcasing Ham Hill’s past and the future vision, a gallery to tell more of Ham Hill’s stories through arts and

crafts, and fully-accessible Changing Places facility and modern toilets. “This is more than just a building, it’s a place for learning, discovery, and community,” the spokesperson added. “Whether you’re here to explore the history, enjoy the stunning landscape, or simply relax with friends and family, the Visitor Centre is the perfect starting point for your visit to Ham Hill. “There is more to look forward to, to make the new visitor centre complete. We are also adding a brand-new natural play space called the Hillfort Hideout, a relaxing outdoor seating area and planting wildflower areas. “And our Heritage Fund journey is far from over. We still have two exciting years of funding ahead to bring even more improvements and experiences to life.” Improvements at Ham Hill are also progressing, including waymarked footpaths for easier exploration, interpretation panels sharing the stories and secrets of the site, upgraded footpaths, archaeological restoration on the historic ramparts, and improvements to the Wildwood Play Zone. Stuart McLeod, director, England – London & South at

The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “The new Visitor Centre is an inspiring gateway to one of the UK’s most significant historic landscapes, helping people connect with its incredible stories and improving access for everyone. “This project is a wonderful example of how heritage can bring communities together, boost local pride and create lasting benefits for people and nature. “We’re excited to see even more unfold as the wider programme continues to restore, celebrate and protect this remarkable place, thanks to National Lottery players.” Paul Ramsbottom, chief executive of the Wolfson Foundation, said: “It will give visitors of all ages the opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the site’s heritage and cultural significance, while also enriching their experience of its surrounding landscape.”

And Councillor Graham Oakes, lead member for public health, environment and climate change at Somerset Council, added: “The new Ham Hill Visitor Centre is a fantastic example of how we can connect heritage, health, and sustainability. By creating a space that encourages people to explore the outdoors, learn about history, and enjoy nature, we are promoting physical and mental wellbeing for all. “The centre’s modern facilities, including accessible amenities and exhibition spaces, make Ham Hill more inclusive than ever. “For generations local people have enjoyed coming to this special place, this new centre further enhances those visits. This project also reflects our commitment to tackling climate change by supporting local engagement with the environment and inspiring future generations to protect these precious landscapes.”

Warning over toy safety this Christmas SOMERSET shoppers are being warned to be on their guard against unsafe toys this Christmas. As families prepare for the big day, the Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service is reminding them to stay vigilant when buying toys for children this festive season. Amid a cost-of-living crisis and a raft of online deals, people are being warned deals may come with hidden dangers. Trading Standards chiefs said toys purchased from non-UK suppliers or unverified websites may not meet safety standards.

Team manager, Ben Newell, said: “If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is. Always check that toys carry a CE or UKCA mark, which shows they’ve been tested against strict safety regulations. “Avoid products without these marks and make sure you know who you’re buying from.” Key toy safety checks for parents include: n Look for CE or UKCA marks on toys n Follow age guidance on packaging – never give toys intended for older children to those under three n Inspect toys before wrapping: check for loose stitching, small detachable parts, and

secure battery compartments n Keep magnets and plastic packaging away from small children Councillor Simon Clist, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards, added: “Christmas should be a time of joy, not worry. By taking a few simple precautions, families can ensure their gifts are safe and avoid unnecessary risks. We want everyone to have a happy and safe festive season.” The film also reminds shoppers that if they buy online and are unhappy with what arrives, they should usually be entitled to a full refund.

found a lack of control over how grant money was being sourced, or spent by the Red Brick Building Centre Ltd, which was the ultimate responsibility of the council. Somerset Council was also issued a 'statutory recommendation' - an order to address issues raised - over the scheme. Among findings by the audit was that the council "took too long to suspend the project when it clearly had not met the fundamental conditions associated with the grant". In the 'lessons learned' document, the council outlines a host of steps taken to address the issues highlighted, as well as seeking repayment of funds spent incorrectly - £2.29m from the Life Factory and £115,715 from the Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre. While there were "no issues" with the delivery of the farming centre, Red brick Building ltd was responsible for the funding. The council's 'lessons learned' document - and the independent audit - said control over spending plans, costings and procurement rules was not strong enough, added to by the change to Somerset Council in 2023, which saw managers leave, move, and the project 'drift' into difficulties. Responding to the report, chief executive of Somerset Council Duncan Sharkey, said: "We take the findings of the independent audit very seriously alongside our role as

The reports will be considered at a meeting of a Full Council meeting tomorrow (December 17). Meanwhile, the demand for repayment has left Red brick Building Centre Ltd facing the "very real possibility of insolvency", the board said. "Red Brick does not have the financial capacity to repay this sum," it said. "The Board is therefore preparing for the very real possibility of insolvency. An emergency independent financial assessment is currently underway." Meetings with the council are taking place, the board said, with a recovery plan laid out. After concerns were raised over the projects, the leadership team at Red Brick Building Centre Ltd has undergone a number of changes, with subsidiary - Beckery Construction Company - put into voluntary liquidation last month.

WO major, multi million-pound Glastonbury regeneration projects have been terminated amid reports highlighting poor financial management - and oversight - by the groups involved. New documents confirm Somerset Council has terminated both the Life Factory and Glastonbury Food and Regenerative Farming Centre projects, after audits of the schemes were critical of financial management and oversight. As a result, the council is seeking to recoup £2.4 million from the Red Brick Building Centre Ltd, which took the grant money for both projects. Somerset Council has also referred management of the Life Factory project to the police. Now, a report into 'lessons learned' by the council - which was responsible for overseeing how the money was allocated and spent - has highlighted several areas of concern for the authority, including a 'churn' of staff managing the scheme, and a lack of control over the scheme's management. Glastonbury received more than £23.5 million from the UK Government's Towns Fund initiative in 2021, with 11 projects initially identified for funding - The Life Factory and GFFRFC among them - both to be delivered by the Red Brick Building Centre Ltd through separate grant agreements. The Life Factory aimed to convert a derelict former factory building into a community space, offices and youth facilities, while the farming centre was set to become a hub of best practice for regenerative local farming. However, in January 2024, Somerset Council froze funds to the Life Factory amid claims those in charge could not "adequately reconcile invoices" in grant claims with the actual spend and progress on site. Beauty brand set for new-look Taunton store

Rituals has applied for permission for new frontage at 11 Fore Street, Taunton

H

OME, body and beauty chain Rituals has applied for signs on a Taunton store. A planning application for new signs at the former Hotter shop premises, in a three-storey building at 11 Fore Street, has been submitted to Somerset Council. The plans detail new signage for the building, and the replacement shopfront for the new store. Rituals is billed as an “accessible luxury brand”, selling beauty products and homewares.

The chain currently runs a shop at Clarks Village, in Street, and now looks set to open in the county town. “The proposals comprise of a new shopfront, signage and internal fitout of the existing retail unit,” the application said. Features such as a “powdercoated aluminium shopfront, colour black, with brass effect glazing bead detail, double sliding doors”, an “internal shopfit of the ground floor”, “minor works to the upper floors comprising of new fixtures and fittings, new floor finishes and redecoration” are

Pictures: Google/Rituals/Somerset Council

all part of the plans. Signage will be ‘made good’, along with the installation of new timber mouldings and top cornice. “The new proposed external fascia signage will be back-lit (halo illumination) comprising of individual antique brass letters, pinned off the existing fascia and an internally illuminated blade sign set within a old brass effect frame,” the application said. “The proposals comprise the replacement of the current ‘modern shopfront’ with a new shopfront introducing a more

‘traditional’ shopfront concept which would be consistent and in keeping with the Crew Clothing Company shopfront next door (under the same Grade II listing), and as such, would enhance the overall appearance and continuity of the building while maintaining the architectural features of the building on the upper levels.” Shoe shop Hotter has moved to East Street, in the former JoJo Maman Bebe premises. For more details on the Rituals plan, and to comment, visit somerset.gov.uk and search reference 38/25/0420.

Children - five and seven - seriously injured in crash near Yeovil TWO children – aged seven and nine – were among four people seriously injured in a crash on the A30 near Sherborne. The incident, between Castle Town Way and Oborne Road, occurred at around 9.13pm on Thursday (December 18) and involved a white Range Rover and a blue Renault Clio, with the road was closed as emergency services attended and investigations took place. Two children – seven and nine-year-old boys – and a woman in her 30s were taken to hospital by air ambulance and are being treated for serious injuries. “A man aged in his 30s was also taken by ambulance to hospital, where he is

being treated for serious injuries,” a Dorset Police spokesperson said. “Their next of kin have been informed.” A man in his 40s, from Yeovil, was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be serious. Sergeant Dave Cotterill, of the Roads Policing Team, said: “We are carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of this collision and I am keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened. “I would also urge anyone who was travelling in the area around the time of the collision to please review any dashcam footage to see if they have captured

anything that might assist our enquiries. “Finally, I would like to thank members of the public for their patience during the road closures, which are necessary to allow for the emergency services to respond and for a thorough examination of the collision scene to be conducted.” Anyone with information about the crash should contact Dorset Police by emailing the serious collision investigation team at scit@dorset.pnn.police.uk, or by calling 101, quoting incident number 18:582. They can also contact the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111 with any information.

Christmas grants boost Somerset groups

D

OZENS of Somerset groups have been spreading warmth and cheer this Christmas thanks to grants from a dedicated pot. Throughout this month, the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) has awarded £28,500 to 64 community groups through a dedicated Festive Fund. The grants, of up to £500, help grassroots organisations spread warmth and cheer through food, gatherings and activities over the festive season, supporting people who may otherwise feel isolated or alone. "We know that the festive season can be challenging, and there are people in our communities who find it particularly difficult," said Kirsty Campbell, senior programmes manager at SCF. "We’re delighted that this year we’re able to award £28,500 to the groups bringing local people together over Christmas at a time no one should feel alone." Activities supported by grants include Growing Space offering free wreath-making sessions in Wincanton, Somerset Opera hosting a festive concert, and Baltonsborough Volunteer Support Group and the Seniors Christmas Dinner, welcoming

Hinton St George Active Living Group at their Christmas meal - funded by the Festive Fund for Somerset in 2024

around 90 senior residents for food, music and games. Meanwhile, the funding came at an exciting time for Crewkerne Community Kitchen, as the group is able to use its brand-new base for Christmas events ahead of officially moving in next month. "Christmas can be a difficult time and our Festive Window is something that just brings a bit of joy over the winter months," said group leader, Jess Wright. "I’m a model-maker by trade and what we’re going to co-create is an aerial view of Crewkerne, as if Santa is flying

over, with models decorated by people from different community groups. "It’s a way for people to sit down and talk about their locality in a really positive way, and we want to reach as many groups as possible. "This year we’re working with Lidl to give toys out at Christmas and we’ll have extra special things around the launch of our new space, including a drop-in workshop on how to keep warm this winter. "In the new year our Community Fridge and Repair Hub will run from the new base

and we’ll have Souper Bowl sessions for fresh warm food in the colder months." Meanwhile, at FordHaven, which provides a nurturing space for children to flourish, an SCF grant is helping fund a truly inclusive Christmas party. "We’ve invited every single family who is part of the FordHaven community, from our youth clubs and holiday clubs to our home-ed groups," said co-founder, Roxie Ford. "So many of the children we work with have special educational needs and everything we do is shaped with them in mind. "This year, we’ve planned something truly special. Santa will be there with a gift for every child, we’ll have a SENDfriendly disco and there will be a cosy festive spread for everyone to enjoy. "Thanks to the funding we’ve received, we can open our doors to all our families without anyone having to pay a thing. It’s our way of celebrating, but also of saying a heartfelt thank you for being part of FordHaven, for trusting us, and for sharing your year with us." n For more details, and to support projects across Somerset, donate at www. somersetcf.org.uk/giving.

Roadworks completed - despite the sheep! A TWO-MILE stretch of an iconic Somerset route has been resurfaced – with work completed on time and on budget – despite workers facing challenges including goats and sheep! Contractor Heidelberg Materials removed and recycled the worn out section of the B3135 through Cheddar Gorge during night-time works to minimise disruption. The workers tackled challenging conditions, including steep gradients, narrow sections and local wildlife – including goats and rare-breed sheep. Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and

waste, said: “Cheddar Gorge is a British icon, so keeping the road in good condition is essential. This was a challenging project and I am delighted that Heidelberg has delivered it on time and on budget.” Tim Doyle, Somerset framework manager at Heidelberg Materials UK, added: “The B3135 through Cheddar Gorge is one of the most scenic roads in the country. The successful completion of the scheme, on time and on budget, is testament to the

strong partnership with have developed with Somerset Council through our term maintenance contract.”

wider aisles for bigger shopping trolleys and larger car parks”. Alex Freudmann, managing director of M&S Food, said: “The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth.

“With more than 20 stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster. Our team want new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best

shopping experience, range and availability for our customers.” M&S currently has stores in Frome, Yeovil, Taunton and Foodhalls in Bridgwater and Weston-super-Mare, as well as smaller outlets, which could be added to or replaced as part of the proposals.

Chard - and beyond - unites to offer gifts to those in need this Christmas

Hundreds of gifts were collected as part of the campaign to help families in need this Christmas

A

CHRISTMAS collection to offer gifts to hundreds of Chard people in need has been hailed a huge success - with donations coming in from across the county. Each year, the Chard Lord's Larder launches a campaign to provide gifts to families in need. And this year, organisers said they had been "touched" at the amount of gifts received. Martyna Lee, founder and coordinator of the Chard Christmas Present Appeal, said: "On behalf of myself (Chard Lord’s Larder), Tessa and Megan from the Community Hub, Jenny from South Chard Church, Tom Poole (Grubworkz Manufacturing) and Gary Waddon (Waddon Construction Ltd), I want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported this year’s Chard Christmas Present Appeal, along with a great organisational support with picking and packing from Hannah Bradbury, Jen Waddon, Gabbie King and Amanda Bower. "Every year, this appeal reminds us of the strength, compassion, and unity within

our community - and this year was no exception. "Your kindness, generosity, and unwavering support have been truly overwhelming," she went on. "Through your donations of new toys, gifts, and financial contributions, you helped us bring joy, dignity, and a sense of magic to families who needed it most. "This year, we were especially touched to receive donations not only from Chard, but also from surrounding areas

such as Yeovil and further afield - a true reflection of how far the spirit of this appeal has reached. "Thanks to your support and the tireless work of our wonderful volunteers - we were able to help 149 families, ensuring 256 children received thoughtful, high‑quality Christmas gifts. "This is an incredible achievement, and it simply wouldn’t have been possible without you." Special thanks went to; Lisa

Somerset railway station up for top award

A

SOMERSET railway station has been nominated for a top

award. The Blue Anchor Railway Station, on the West Somerset Railway (WSR), has been shortlisted for the Heritage Railway Association’s Annual Awards, in the Station Of The Year category. Originally opened in 1874, when the original West Somerset Railway was extended from Watchet to Minehead, the track through the station was originally laid to the seven feet and quarter inch broad gauge championed by the great Victorian engineer Brunel. However, it was converted to standard gauge in 1882, a decade before the wider gauge finally disappeared from Britain’s railway map completely. The station is architecturally unusual, as the main buildings of stations at Washford, Dunster and Minehead look alike, but Blue Anchor’s structures are

as the enter or leave the station has been photographed or filmed countless times. “What was once the waiting room on the platform for Minehead bound trains now houses a museum which is part of the work of the West Somerset Railway Heritage Association and is open when trains are calling at the station, following refurbishment work

on the building and a new interior layout.” When the current WSR began to reopen in 1976, trains initially offered round trips between Minehead and Blue Anchor, until the section of line to Williton saw services extended later in that year. As with other stations on the WSR, Blue Anchor is staffed and maintained by volunteers. WSR general manager, Kerry Noble, said: “It’s wonderful news that Blue Anchor has been nominated for this national award and recognition of the work of many volunteers both currently and in the last half century. “All of our ten stations are the ‘gateways’ to the railway and the station teams do so much to make them look attractive and welcoming. “We look forward to them continuing this vital part of the West Somerset Railway during our 50th Anniversary Year in 2026 and for many more years into the future.”

School pupils bump into PM during visit! PUPILS from a Somerset school got a personal welcome to the Houses of Parliament from the Prime Minister himself during a visit this week. On Monday (December 15), pupils and staff from Whitstone School, in Shepton Mallet, were in Westminster with MP Tessa Munt (Lib Dem, Wells and Mendip Hills). And while walking the corridors of power, they came across the man leading the country - Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer. The PM even posed for a picture with the group, so the moment could be memorialised. "It was fantastic to welcome pupils and staff from Whitstone School to Parliament," Ms Munt said. "It was brilliant to spend time with the group - who even had the opportunity for a photo to be taken with the Prime Minister."

Music on the Levels returns

WO more iconic rock bands are set to grace the boards at the Cheese and Grain in Frome next summer. Nu-metal legends Drowning Pool and Snot have announced a June 14 concert at the Somerset venue. Ryan McCombs joined the band and helped them cement their place in rock history, and re-joined the band in 2023, coming full circle. “Just being back in the same room together after so many

And guitarist CJ Pierce said he was not offended by most people only knowing one of the band’s sings – through the huge success of Bodies. “I’d play Bodies five times a night if people really wanted it that bad,” he said. Snot, meanwhile, also lost an iconic frontman – Lynn Strait

Accountants tot up Christmas donation!

M

ORE than 170 Christmas chocolate boxes made their way to some of Somerset’s most vulnerable children thanks to a donation by a county accountancy firm. AC Mole donated the boxes to children in care as part of efforts to support charitable and not-for-profit initiatives through its ACM Community scheme. The chocolate treats were donated to children living with Somerset Council foster carers and in children’s homes following a similar gesture in 2023, when the company marked its 120th anniversary by donating 120 Easter eggs to children in care. Amanda Gunter, a partner at AC Mole, said: “The ACM Community is about giving back to our local community and giving our staff an opportunity to participate in a meaningful way. “Our staff donated over 70

selection boxes and the firm more than matched that bringing the total to 174 selection boxes. Everybody loves chocolate at Christmas, so hopefully this will bring a little joy to those in care or moving on from care.

“With more than 650 children and young people in care across Somerset, this generous gesture not only provides a sweet Christmas surprise but also shines a spotlight on the urgent need for more foster carers locally.”

Cllr Heather Shearer, lead member for children, families and education, said: “Christmas can be a difficult time for children who are not living with their birth families, and small gestures like this make a huge difference. “These chocolate boxes will bring smiles and a sense of belonging to children who need it most. “We are incredibly grateful to AC Mole for their generosity and for helping us raise awareness of the urgent need for foster carers. “Every child deserves a safe, supportive home, and we need more people to come forward to make that happen. “If you’ve ever thought about fostering, now is the time to take that step – you could change a child’s life forever.” n For more information, visit the Fostering in Somerset website or call 0800 587 9900.

Developer builds up festive cheer for families

T

AUNTON-based developer Summerfield is once again supporting the Christmas Sparkle charity, helping to spread festive cheer to disadvantaged children and families. The initiative aims to ensure every child living in difficult circumstances in the community receives a gift at Christmas. Summerfield provides office space at Victoria House where the group can set up donation drop-off points and offers staff volunteers to help gift wrap, as well as making a £1,000 donation. Gill Harrison, from the Christmas Sparkle project, said: “As in previous years we have had thousands of items generously donated allowing us to bring joy by sending gifts to several thousand babies and children and young people around Taunton and Wellington.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who is able to make a donation, and to Summerfield for the continued support in making sure that those in need really do have something to smile about this Christmas. “Sadly, there are many families facing difficulties and experiencing hardship, through no fault of their own.” Christmas Sparkle welcomes new items suitable for all ages, ranging from baby toys and clothes, puzzles, family games, toiletries, through to products for teenage girls and boys such as make-up and aftershave. The Summerfield collection points in Taunton are the Summerfield head office, Tauntfield, in South Road, and the Eastside Canteen at Victoria House, in Victoria Street. James Holyday, managing director at Summerfield, added: “Christmas Sparkle is a truly

pleasure in getting involved, knowing how much these generous donations made will mean a lot to local families.”

National Highways said an 'anomoly' involving cameras and variable speed limits had led to thousands of tickets being issued incorrectly

Thousands of speeding tickets issued wrongly after speed camera 'anomoly', say road chiefs

A

N 'ANOMOLY' between speed cameras and variable limits on motorways and A-roads in the UK has been blamed for more than 2,500 tickets being incorrectly issued. National Highways said it is "implementing a fix" to address the problem - detected in the way some variable speed cameras interact with signs on some routes. "This has resulted in a very small number of people incorrectly facing enforcement action for speeding and we apologise to anyone who has been affected," a spokesperson said. "The anomaly has meant there was at times a slight delay between cameras and variable speed signs, leading to some drivers being incorrectly detected as speeding after the limit had changed. "As a result, National Highways have identified approximately 2,650 total erroneous camera activations on

impacted roads since 2021, which is the equivalent of fewer than two a day." They said the number of false tickets being issued was small, with more than 6 million activations on the impacted roads. "Not all activations are enforced so the amount of people impacted will be lower than this," the spokesperson went on. "This anomaly impacts just 10% of the Strategic Road Network, which is made up of motorways and major A roads in England. "National Highways apologises to anyone affected. They will be reimbursed and have points removed from their licence where relevant. Steps will be taken to remedy any incorrect enforcement action, and anybody affected will be contacted directly." National Highways said it has now developed a data check to ensure nobody will now be prosecuted incorrectly and are

liaising with police on its implementation. "Enforcement remains in place and anybody breaking the law could face prosecution," the spokesperson added. "National Highways will also be increasing other safety measures, and policing will continue to enforce speeding and other offences on our road network." Chief executive, Nick Harris,

said: "Safety is our number one priority and we have developed a fix for this technical anomaly to maintain the highest levels of safety on these roads and make sure no one is wrongly prosecuted. "All drivers should continue observing the posted speed limits as normal. Anyone who has been impacted will be contacted by the relevant police force."

Somerset darts star Justin wows the crowd at Ally Pally - with his belly celebrations!

G

LASTONBURY native Justin Hood averaged more than 100 on his way to the second round of the World Darts Championship at Ally Pally. The 32-year-old, in his debut at the London tournament, beat Welshman Nick Kenny in the first round of the competition on December 16. It meant Justin, ranked 86 in the world, was set to face Danny Noppert in the second round on Tuesday (December23), after your Leveller went to press. But whatever the result, the Somerset slinger - who now lives in Weston-Super-Mare having moved from Street - won over fans with his personable nature and stage antics at Ally Pally, including his post-match celebration of showing off his belly. Speaking after his win, he said: “I enjoyed it up there. It was tougher than it looked. “I played well. I punished him when he was struggling a little bit. I’m happy with the performance.” Having averaged more than

Justin Hood after his win and inset, his hilarious celebration at Ally Pally

100 on the big stage, Justin was optimistic – and tongue-incheek – about his scoring. “It’s standard, I’ll have another 10 points on that next game – or 10 points less,” he quipped. “My scoring has always been good, doubles let me down a bit. But if you don’t give them a chance, it doesn’t matter, just score heavy and have three or four darts at a double instead of one.”

While this is Justin’s first appearance at the Alexandra Palace event – shown live on Sky – he has been on the fringes of the PDC tour in recent years. In 2019, he qualified for the World Masters, making the fourth round, and in June last year scooped his first PDC title and secured a tour card for 2025. And he was confident as he looked forward to his secondround match.

Pictures: PDC

“I’m very happy, very happy,” he added. “But I’ll be even happier when I beat Danny or Jurgen in the next game. “I’ve played Danny three times, beat him twice. If it’s Danny, it’s Danny. If it’s Jurjen, it doesn’t bother me. If I play well, I can win.” And if he should have made it through on December 23, fans back home in Somerset and around the world can expect another glimpse of his belly…

Taunton Town looking for a new manager

T

AUNTON Town manager Richard Luffman has left the club after resigning. The Southern League Premier Division South club confirmed the news on Saturday, December 13, following a 3-0 defeat at Worcestershire side, Evesham United. It brought to an end Luffman's 18-month spell in charge at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium, in Wordsworth Drive, with assistant manager Liam Harding and first-team coach David Steele also departing. Immediately following the news, the club said: "We would

like to thank Richard for his efforts during his tenure and wish him well for the future." The board of directors later thanked the former manager for his efforts. "All at Taunton Town Football Club would like to thank Richard Luffman for all of his efforts over the last 18 months," they said. "Richard has worked tirelessly and passionately to reunite the club, its supporters, and all those associated with it. "There have been some great moments along the way, including a memorable FA Cup run, a Somerset Cup win, and

several other special occasions. "Richard’s coaching staff also played a big part during his tenure at the club, with special mention to Liam Harding for his efforts. "We wish them all every success in the future, and they will always be welcome at TTFC." Luffman took the helm following Taunton’s relegation back to the Southern Premier League, inherited a club with no registered players or footballing staff. In 2024/25, the Peacocks reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup

and secured a ninth-place league finish, as well as picking up the Francis Hillier Premier Cup. The search for a new manager is now underway, as the club also unveiled a series of appointments to leadership roles, including Peter Headington as general manager, TTFC legend Lloyd Irish as head of football, Richard Smith as community engagement officer, Beth Milton as bar and events manager, and Debbie Gould as head of matchday operations. n On December 27, the Peacocks host Gloucester City in a league tie. Kick-off at 3pm.

Improving Lung Health through Singing

A

singing for lung health group in Yeovil is helping local people with lung conditions breathe more easily, feel more confident, and enjoy the power of singing together.

Yeovil Sing2Breathe is part of a wider network of singing for lung health groups with the aim of supporting people living with long-term respiratory conditions. Building on the success of similar programmes in Bridgwater, Cheddar, and Wells, the Yeovil group meets every Thursday afternoon from 2pm to 3.15pm at Westlands Entertainment Venue, led by experienced community singing leader Nikki Hewson. Participants of the groups live with a variety of lung health conditions, including bronchiectasis, COPD, asthma, and sarcoidosis and the sessions provide a relaxing space to come together and learn breathing techniques, relaxation methods, and singing exercises to help manage symptoms and improve wellbeing. Many have reported noticeable improvements in their daily lives. “A brilliant new class for our area,” said one participant. “It offers a valuable, previously unavailable way to help manage common lung conditions. Normally, support ends after medication or a one-off rehab course, but Sing2Breathe offers something ongoing and empowering.” “It’s an excellent way to understand how you breathe and how to control it, all in a happy, inclusive environment. Totally positive in every way.” “With practice, I can use the breathing techniques every day,” said one member, “Nikki’s love of singing really lifts us all.” Sing2Breathe founder Kate Lynch set up Sing2breathe in October 2023 and this year the organisation achieved charitable status. Its summer celebration event, ‘Sing Out Loud for Lung Health’, brought together members from all its regional groups for an uplifting afternoon of shared music and experiences. Looking ahead, Sing2Breathe is now focusing on securing the future of its Yeovil group by exploring local funding opportunities and partnerships to ensure that residents can continue to benefit from this. Why not come along for a taster session and see how Sing2Breathe could help you breathe a little easier? Places must be booked in advance. If you are interested in joining the Yeovil group please contact Nikki Hewson at: sing2breathe2@gmail.com 07812 441143 For groups running in Cheddar, Wells and Bridgwater, contact Kate Lynch: sing2breathe2@gmail.com 07595 745884

How to get health support this Christmas

T

HE NHS in Somerset has shared top tips on how to stay healthy over the festive period. From ordering repeat prescriptions early and accessing mental health support and making the most of local services like NHS 111 and community pharmacies, health chiefs have highlighted things people can do to help themselves – and friends and family – stay well. Bernie Marden, chief medical officer at NHS Somerset, said: "Winter is often a challenging time for the NHS, particularly over the festive season when services become busier and are more limited over the bank holiday periods. It’s important to know how you can get the help you need.   "The easiest and quickest way to order your repeat medicine is via the NHS App or GP Online Services – you can do this from the comfort of your own home. And do remember that community pharmacies can help you with many winter illnesses and can also provide prescription only medicine to treat seven common health conditions such as sinusitis, sore throats and earache. "Mental health support is also crucial, especially during the festive season. We have face-to-face safe spaces and a 24-hour helpline available. You can also access help and advice via our Open Mental Health website. Remember, help is always at hand, and it’s important to reach out if you’re struggling." The NHS in Somerset has an online guide to services at https://nhssomerset.nhs.uk/ my-health/winter-2025. Here are some of their top tips to stay healthy in Somerset over Christmas: n If you rely on repeat medication, make sure to place your orders now to avoid running out over the holidays

n NHS 111: For nonemergencies, you can get medical advice 24/7 by calling NHS 111 or using the 111 online service. They have trained professionals who can direct you to the appropriate care. n Community pharmacies: Your local pharmacy can offer clinical advice for common winter conditions such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy troubles, and aches and pains. Check their opening hours via www.nhs.uk/servicesearch/find-a-Pharmacy. n Domestic violence: In an emergency, please call 999. For support, contact Somerset Domestic Abuse Service at 0800 6949999. You can call 0800 6949999 (option 2) from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. The helpline will be open from 9am to 1pm on Christmas day and bank holidays. n Emergencies: If you need emergency care, call 999 or use your nearest accident and emergency department. Do contact 111 first if you are unsure if you need to use A&E services. n Looking after children: Somerset’s Handiapp features advice to help with everything

from high temperatures to vomiting and diarrhoea. See https://nhssomerset.nhs.uk/ my-health/parent-zone/

n Support with your mental health: Open Mental Health’s Festive Wellbeing Kit is packed with resources and support options from across Somerset, while Mindline Somerset is open any time of the day locally on 01823 276892 or freephone 0800 138 1692. n Urgent Dental Care: If you need emergency or urgent dental care, you can get advice from NHS 111, or contact a dentist and ask for an appointment. n Urgent Treatment Centres and Minor Injury Units: People can attend an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) or Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) for urgent not life-threatening conditions and injuries such as sprains, fractures and burns. n Winter vaccinations: Free vaccinations for flu, COVID and RSV are available at GPs, community pharmacies, your GP and at pop up clinics.

Couple among first to move in to new homes on development near Taunton

T

HE first residents of the final phase of a Taunton housing development have moved into their new homes. Earlier this year, Persimmon secured planning permission for the final phase – of 90 homes – at Hartnells Farm, the last step in completing 320 new homes on the site, when complete. And in November, the first phase-four residents of the development, north of the Monkton Heathfield urban extension, have started moving in. Among them were Aidan and Abigail, 23 and 21 respectively, who chose Hartnells Farm as their first home having been a couple for seven years. Car servicing professional Abigail said: “It feels like an incredible accomplishment – and made the hard-work, energy, and stress seem entirely worthwhile. “We are so excited now to make our home our own in a way you just can’t without the home being truly yours.

Abigail and Aidan have moved into their first home at Hartnells Farm

“We chose Monkton because we love quiet villages and it’s in the perfect location work wise for both of us, and the mid-point between each of our families. And now we have room for a puppy – if I can get Aidan to agree.” NHS distribution worker, Aidan, added: “The sales process couldn’t have been any easier and everyone we have had the pleasure of meeting – like Lisa, Jodie, and Jordan – made it incredibly seamless and

never thought we had stupid questions. It was an amazing experience and its great to be moved in time for Christmas. “We are incredibly proud to be homeowners at our age, especially with how difficult it is for people like us to get on the property ladder. “However, if you put your mind to it and you really want it, the whole buying process is worth it in the end.” Persimmon Homes south west sales director, Stacey

Harris, said: “We are delighted the first properties at our exciting Hartnells Farm development are selling and the positive interest we’ve seen in the good quality, affordable homes available on site. “At Persimmon, we provide ourselves on building good quality homes for local people and we believe we will deliver a development which will meet the needs of local people and deliver a long-term, sustainable community.”

ANY of us fancy taking on our own Grand Designs-style project to refurbish a property and create our dream residence. Among them were 2 and 4 Chandos Street, in Bridgwater, a pair of period terrace properties in need of full renovation. With a guide price of £70,000, spirited bidding online

A property in Old Wells Road, Glastonbury, sold for £285,000

While the residential properties dominated this month’s auction, an attractive block of pastureland at Nythe Road, Henley, Langport, in total extending to 15 acres, sold to an in-room bidder for £99,000. n For more information on selling or buying at auction, contact the auctioneers on 0117 203 5577 or 01935 423474 or email farms.redhill@gth.net or farms.yeovil@gth.net.
