YOU are helping to mobilize people, partners, time, and resources for our community
Providing a Safety Net Your donation to United Way of Southeastern Connecticut makes a difference. Here’s how: •
We allocated more than $2.2 million to a vital network of local health and human service programs
•
Project Warm-up emergency heating assistance program helped keep 102 households from freezing
•
2-1-1 helped callers from New London County with 20,657 service requests the top five requests were for housing and shelter, food, utilities, healthcare, and menal health services
•
The Tommy Toy Fund, a partnership with The Bulletin, assisted 2,047 families with 5,012 children during the holidays
•
FamilyWize Discount Presciption Drug program saved county residents a total of $407,471
Supporting Education We believe strongly in supporting education efforts in our community - helping teachers, students, and administrators. We run an annual school supply drive which yielded more than 10,000 items in 2018. We host two annual Reading Days – Read for the Record in October and Read Across America in March. Last year, we mobilized 118 Volunteer Readers representing 36 local businesses and organizations to read to more than 3,000 students in 24 schools and learning centers.
Alleviating Homelessness United Way has been an active partner in collabortive efforts to end homelessness since 2006. We provide ongoing support to the New London County Fund to End Homelessness, the annual Point-in-Time Count, and the Partnership to End Homelessness.
YOU are part of the fight against hunger and food insecurity In 2018, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank. Thank you to our generous community for helping to feed families facing hunger for the last three decades!
Last year the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank provided the equivalent of more than 1.8 million meals and snacks at no cost to those in need. Each month, 19,529 individuals were served through our 69 member agencies and 10 monthly Mobile Pantry stops.
More about our work to reduce hunger: • Each year in September we support Hunger Action Month activities to help the 11.5% of New London County residents facing food insecurity and to raise awareness of hunger-related issues. • Organize numerous meal packaging events with local groups to assemble pre-packaged meals for our member agencies and guests at the Mobile Pantry. • We are an active member of the New London County Food Policy Council. • More than 17,600 pounds of fresh produce was harvested at the Coogan Farm Giving Garden and distributed through our Mobile Pantry. • Mobilize volunteer groups to assist at our Food Bank warehouse, Mobile Pantry distributions, and the Coogan Farm Giving Garden.
With our 30th anniversary brought a slight name change. We are now the Gemma E. Moran United Way/ Labor Food Bank. Check out the Food Bank’s section of our website at www.uwsect.org/foodbank.

Thank you! United Way of Southeastern Connecticut Annual Report • 2018 Spinnaker Club
The Tocqueville Society The Tocqueville Society bears the fleur de lis symbol, representing faith, wisdom, and valor. Members have the ability, the generosity, and the courage to place themselves at the pinnacle of charitable giving and community service. The Society derives its name from Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat of the 1800s who was inspired by the American spirit of philanthropy. His observations formed the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed study of American society and politics, published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Tocqueville wrote extensively on the power of voluntary giving for the common good and today, his ideals continue as we Live United. We extend our gratitude to the following members of The Tocqueville Society for their extraordinary, generous gifts of $10,000 or more:
