our work to reduce hunger Since 1988, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center has played a key role in providing one of the building blocks to a good quality of life by feeding food insecure individuals and families all across our community. The Food Center provides food and household items to 81 free emergency food assistance programs throughout New London County including shelters, food pantries, after-school programs, child care centers, community meal sites, and programs for seniors. United Way actively supports the New London County Food Policy Council (NLCFPC). The Council’s mission is to transform the region’s food system for improved health outcomes through policy and advocacy and program innovation, alignment, and support. In 2015, the NLCFPC and United Way spearheaded a study to determine the optimal model for a food hub in the county. Research showed that demand for local food from buyers and consumers is increasing in the state, with an estimated unmet demand in this county to be $149 million across all farm product categories. A food hub not only supports local growers and farmers, but provides consumers with fresh, healthier food options. Read the report on our website at: uwsect.org/foodhubfeasilitystudy. The Mobile Food Pantry program, a critical extension of the work of United Way and our Food Center, continues to provide an essential service – bringing healthy, fresh food directly into towns, neighborhoods, schools, and other locations to help the most people facing hunger. On average, the Mobile Food Pantry helps 1,154 households each month at ten distribution stops throughout Southeastern Connecticut. During Hunger Action Month in September, we launched our newest distribution stop at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in New London. The new site represents a merging of the two previous New London distribution sites, providing increased parking for guests and improved accommodations for inclement weather and winter conditions.

our work to provide a safety net Twenty-five percent of Connecticut households have earnings that exceed the Federal Poverty Level but fall short of a basic cost of living threshold. This threshold is a measure of the amount of income required to pay for the essential costs of living included in a Household Survival Budget. We call these households ALICE - an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Together with the 10% of Connecticut households in poverty, more than one-third of Connecticut households struggle to get by. ALICE households represent a cross-section of the population that includes all races, ethnicities, ages, and people from every city and town in Connecticut. While the full ALICE Report was released in late 2014, an update on the high cost of child care in Connecticut was released in 2015, and it provides an even deeper understanding of the challenges facing ALICE families. Specifically, the cost of child care can account for up to 28% of a household’s budget for a family of four. Read more at alice.ctunitedway.org/ childcare. As ALICE struggles to stay afloat, United Way partner programs and initiatives can help fill the gap in needs from month-to-month, preventing ALICE from falling into poverty. When ALICE families encounter an unforeseen problem – home repairs, the need for a new appliance, a medical emergency, or car trouble – it can trigger a real financial crisis. United Way provides funds and support to help families avert homelessness, find free information and referral, receive emergency heating assistance, save money on their prescription medications, and more.

Clockwise from top left: volunteers from Norwich Public Utilities at the Tommy Toy Fund distribution in Norwich; an ALICE Udpate in 2015 examines the high cost of child care in Connecticut and how it impacts families struggling to make ends meet; Lisa Tepper-Bates, Executive Director of the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness speaks at an event to announce results of the 100-Day Challenge to End Homelessness; and 2-1-1 provides free information and referral to everyone in Connecticut. our work to engage volunteers Our work would not be possible without the contributions of hundreds of volunteers each year. Through the Food Center, Mobile Food Pantry, United Way Reading Days, Tommy Toy Fund, and other opportunities, we continually find ways to connect people who care about their community with ways to give back. We host two United Way Reading Days each year in honor of Read for the Record in October and Read Across America in March. Last year, we mobilized more than eighty volunteer readers to share the joy of reading with students throughout New London County and support their academic success. Our annual school supply drive yielded more than 8,000 items that were distributed to schools all across the community to help both teachers and students. Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Chelsea Groton Bank, and Dime Bank served as drop-off points for donations at all of their branches. Last year we witnessed the first joint United Way Day of Caring volunteer project with both Foxwoods/MPTN and Mohegan Sun (see photo on page 14). The large group spent the day Living United as they spruced up Camp Harkness, a summertime location for individuals with disabilities and their families and friends to enjoy. We welcome individuals and groups year-round to our Food Center to help sort and pack food, as well as check expiration dates, while numerous volunteer groups ensure that the Mobile Food Pantry distributions run smoothly. Several local businesses, in fact, have adopted one of the ten Mobile Food Pantry distributions, and they provide volunteers each and every month.

Want to make a difference in our community through volunteering? Visit uwsect.org/volunteer to view some of our year-round engagement opportunities!

our partnership with organized labor At United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, we have maintained a long-standing, year-round partnership with members of organized labor. Members actively participate in every facet of our work, from helping to establish the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center to organizing and running food drives to lending their skills on a voluntary basis to giving generously to the annual campaign. Each year several members attend Union Counseling training (UCAN) in May to learn about programs and services available in our community. This way they can serve as an essential resource to their colleagues back at work, connecting those who need help with the programs that can help. In 2015 the annual AFL-CIO golf tournament was held at Great Neck County Club in Waterford and once again, was a sell-out event, receiving strong support from local unions as players and sponsors. The tournament raised $11,699 for our Project Warm-up program that provides onetime, emergency heating assistance when no other means of assistance is available. Wherever and whenever there is a need, members of organized labor are there to help! Clockwise from top left: the annual Workers’ Memorial occurs on April 28 and honors those who have lost their lives while on the job; the Electric Boat Employees’ Community Services Association conducts an annual food drive at Stop & Shop stores; the winning team at the AFL-CIO golf tournament; Wayne Burgess, President of the Southeastern Connecticut Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO and member of our Board of Directors speaks at the golf tournament which raised more than $11,000 for Project Warm-up.
