United Way of Southeastern Connecticut 2014 Annual Report

2014 The groundbreaking ALICE Report is released in 2014. All Connecticut United Ways supported the study, conducted by Rutgers University, to examine why households with working adults were still having trouble making ends meet. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. The report found that while 10% of people fall below the Federal Poverty Level in Connecticut, there is another 25% earning above the poverty level but not enough to cover the basics of living including housing, child care, and food.

I am ALICE

As part of United Way’s communitywide school supplies drive, the WNBA Connecticut Sun hosted a “United Way Night” and collected school supplies from fans. United Way volunteers and agency representatives were on-court during pre-game.

The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center donated a portion of its Coogan Farm to establish a Giving Garden. All of the produce grown here is donated to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. In June, on the United Way Day of Action, more than 100 volunteers spent the day at the farm to help prepare it for growing the vegetables. Mohegan Sun sponsored the event, providing volunteers, equipment, a shuttle bus and driver, and lunch. Volunteers plant and maintain the plots, then harvest vegetables for delivery to the Food Center. In its first, abbreviated growing season, the Giving Garden yielded more than a ton of vegetables.

On the cover, from top to bottom: a volunteer reader from Zachry Nuclear Engineering during Read Across America; volunteers harvest vegetables at the Coogan Farm Giving Garden in Mystic; Gemma E. Moran inviting people to take the Turkey Challenge and provide holiday meals to those struggling with hunger; and Morgan Stanley volunteers lend a hand at the Food Center.

At the Campaign Celebration in March, Campaign Co-chairs Bob Nardone and Keith Brothers announce that generous donors had contributed a total of $5,786,952 to advance the common good in Southeastern Connecticut. The Chairman’s Award of Excellence, the highest honor for a company running a United Way Campaign, is presented to Zachry Nuclear Engineering.

We celebrate the 90th birthday of the founder of the Food Center, Gemma E. Moran, with an event at the Garde Arts Center. Guests at “A Legacy That Sustains Us,” reflected on Moran’s legacy of hunger activism and the early years of establishing the Food Center. Part of the event includes Moran receiving the inaugural Placemaking Award from CreateHereNow, an organization that re-purposes under-utilized storefronts and historic buildings to become hives of community activity. The award recognizes Moran as a pioneer and innovator for helping to address the area’s issues around hunger.

HELPING THOSE AT-RISK FOR HUNGER & FOOD INSECURITY The Mobile Food Pantry program is a critical extension of the work of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. In 2014, United Way meets its goal of establishing twelve monthly distribution sites throughout New London County. The sites were chosen based on where the largest number of people at-risk for hunger could be served and/or where there are food deserts, where access to healthy and inexpensive food can be limited. On average, the Mobile Food Pantry serves 1,000 households per month, providing each with about a week’s worth of fresh produce, proteins, dairy, and healthy snacks. Additional support for the Food Center and Mobile Food Pantry is provided by: Bank of America Charitable Foundation; Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT; Charter Oak Federal Credit Union Community Giving Program; Chelsea Groton Bank Foundation; Citizens Bank Foundation; City of New London Community Development Block Grant; Dime Bank Foundation; Dominion Foundation; Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program; Jewett City Savings Bank Foundation; Ledyard Rotary Foundation; Liberty Bank Foundation; Metabolic Studio and Annenberg Foundation; Rotary Club of Mystic; Frank Loomis Palmer Fund; ShopRite (through CT Food Bank); Walmart; and the USDA.

The 2nd annual Walk Against Hunger is held in May and welcomes 360 participants and 48 teams that rallied together to fight hunger. In all, more than $25,000 is raised for the Food Center and its member agencies. Volunteers at the Mobile Food Pantry distribution at Three Rivers Community College show their support for Hunger Action Month in September by wearing orange. Volunteering at the Food Center hits an all-time high in 2014. More than 11,000 hours of volunteer time is donated to help sort food, pack meat and produce for both the warehouse and Mobile Food Pantry, and check expiration dates on donations. This support helps us distribute the equivalent of 2.25 million meals throughout the year.

At the Tommy Toy Fund, in partnership with The Bulletin, volunteers sort and distribute holiday gifts to families in need. Pictured here are volunteers from Norwich Public Utilities. Last holiday season, 5,734 children receive toys through the Tommy Toy Fund. Foxwoods Resort Casino/MPTN once again sponsors Stuff the Bus to collect holiday toys, clothing, winter coats and other items to donate to the Tommy Toy Fund. Foxwoods also sponsors a series of bus tours, giving individuals and other companies the chance to visit United Way partner programs and see first-hand how their donation makes a difference.

ENSURING THAT NO ONE FREEZES DURING THE WINTER When there is no other means of assistance, United Way’s Project Warm-Up steps in to help, providing one-time emergency heating to families in need. Last winter, Project Warm-Up helped 434 households. Applications are submitted through a network of local social service providers on behalf of their clients to United Way. These caseworkers are able to counsel their clients to help prevent the future need for assistance. Additional support for Project WarmUp is provided by: Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation; Community Foundation of Southeastern CT; Dominion Foundation; and the Frank Loomis Palmer Fund.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION & LITERACY IN OUR SCHOOLS United Way believes that all children should enter school with the material supplies needed for academic success. A school supplies drive yields more than 5,500 items, donated by local businesses, that are provided to schools in the county. During Teacher Appreciation Week, gift baskets of supplies are also delivered to 80 schools. And we recruit volunteer readers to read to students in the classroom on two occasions – on Read Across America Day in March to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and immediately after the Campaign Kickoff event in September. Together, we are supporting the academic achievements of students.

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union sponsors the 100x100 Challenge to encourage businesses to donate to United Way, many of whom had never before contributed. Charter Oak matches those new gifts, up to $10,000, and the company hosts a reception for all 100x100 donors at its headquarters in Waterford. Charter Oak also holds the “Big Chill,” at left, to raise funds for United Way in addition to its United Way employee campaign and corporate support.

Support for the New London County Fund to End Homelessness is provided by: Charter Oak Federal Credit Union Community Giving Program; Community Foundation of Eastern CT; Dime Bank Foundation; Dominion Foundation; Liberty Bank Foundation; The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation; Pfizer Foundation; SI Financial Group Foundation; and the State of Connecticut, Department of Housing.

As it neared the second year of operation in May, the New London County Fund to End Homelessness had provided rapid rehousing and shelter diversion services for a total of 204 households in the county— including 140 families with 286 children. The news is reported at a legislative briefing held at United Way. United Way sub-contracts with local nonprofit service providers to implement rapid rehousing services for homeless singles and shelter diversion and rapid re-housing services for homeless families using the state’s United Way 2-1-1 helpline as a portal for those in need.
