TO LIVE BETTER WE MUST LIVE UNITED

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut 2016 Annual Report

We are more than the fundraisers. We are the hand raisers. The game changers. The stop-talking-start-doing-band-together-and-take-on-theimpossible-task-masters. United, we fight hunger and food insecurity. United, we provide a safety net for those in need. United, we support a vital network of health and human services. Because change doesn’t happen alone. Hope isn’t a one-man band. And to live better, we must Live United.

United, we fight

Hunger & Food Insecurity

Since 1988, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center has played a key role in providing one of the building blocks to a good quality of life by feeding food insecure individuals and families all across our community. The Food Center provides food and household items to 85 free emergency food assistance programs throughout New London County including shelters, food pantries, after-school programs, child care centers, community meal sites, and programs for seniors. Our Mobile Food Pantry is a critical extension of this work, bringing healthy items including fresh produce directly to those who need it.

BY THE NUMBERS • 85 free emergency food programs are members of the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center: • More than 1.9 million meals and snacks were provided last year through our member programs, at no cost to those in need • More than 20,150 people were fed each month • 10 monthly Mobile Food Pantry distributions: • A total of 285,383 meals were distributed • 2,588 individuals served each month • More than 6 tons of fresh produce was harvested at the Coogan Farm Giving Garden and distributed through the Mobile Pantry • Support Hunger Action Month activities performed each September to help the 1 in 7 Connecticut residents facing hunger and raise awareness about hunger-related issues • Active member of the New London County Food Policy Council

Our partnership with

Organized Labor

At United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, we have maintained a long-standing, year-round partnership with members of organized labor. Members actively participate in every facet of our work, from helping to establish the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center to organizing and running food drives to lending their skills on a voluntary basis to giving generously to the annual campaign. Wherever and whenever there is a need, members of organized labor are there to help!

The Tocqueville Society bears the fleur de lis symbol, representing faith, wisdom, and valor. Catherine Soderstrom Members have the ability, the generosity, Robert & Jackie Soper and the courage to place themselves at the pinnacle of charitable giving and community Jim Spavins service.

Mike & Carol Toner

The Society derives its name from Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat of the 1800s who was inspired by the American spirit of philanthropy. His observations formed the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed study of American society and politics, published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Tocqueville wrote extensively on the power of voluntary giving for the common good and today, his ideals continue as we Live United.
