UNITED, WE PROVIDE A SAFETY NET FOR THOSE IN NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY.

Roll up your sleeves, read a book to students, run a food or school supply drive, volunteer at our Food Center or Mobile Pantry, distribute toys to families at the holidays, and donate to support our work to provide a safety net in our community. United Way mobilizes resources, in terms of dollars and manpower, to create real change!

We believe strongly in supporting education efforts in our community - helping teachers, students, and administrators. Our annual school supply drive yielded 11,245 items that were donated to our schools, which is a 60% increase over the previous year! During our two annual Reading Days, we mobilized more than 120 Volunteer Readers to read to thousands of students in elementary school classrooms.

United Way is an active partner in collabortive efforts to end homelessness, and we’ve been doing so since 2006. We provide ongoing support to the New London County Fund to End Homelessness, the annual Point-in-Time Count, and the Partnership to End Homelessness.

More ways your donation makes a difference: • We allocated more than $2.2 million to a vital network of local health and human service programs • Project Warm-up emergency heating assistance program helped 46 households from freezing • 2-1-1 helped 16,144 callers from Southeastern Connecticut with 19,812 service requests • The Tommy Toy Fund, a partnership with The Bulletin, assisted 2,458 families during the holidays • FamilyWize Discount Presciption Drug program saved county residents a total of more than $203,000 • Made an additional grant of $25,000 to the Red Cross CT Chapter to assist relief efforts after multiple destructive hurricanes and storms hit in fall 2017 • Made two additional grants to local programs promoting independence and increasing financial stability

UNITED, WE FIGHT HUNGER AND FOOD INSECURITY SO ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS CAN PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE. Since 1988, the Gemma E. Moran United Way/ Labor Food Center has been helping to reduce hunger and food insecurity all across our community. Through our network local, free, emergency food programs and ten monthly stops of our Mobile Pantry, we’re working to ensure all households can put meals on their table.

84

A total of

distribution sites in southeastern Connecticut including our member agencies receiving food from our warehouse and ten monthly distributions of our Mobile Pantry throughout New London County.

Last year the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center provided the equivalent of 2,135,185 million meals and snacks at no cost to those in need. Each month, 22,478 individuals were served through our member agencies and Mobile Pantry. More about our work to end hunger: • Each year in September we support Hunger Action Month activities to help the 12.2% of New London County residents facing food insecurity and to raise awareness of hunger-related issues. • Ran a healthy snack packing project at our Campaign Celebration event which yielded 1,000 healthy snack packs for local schools and students • We are an active member of the New London County Food Policy Council. • More than seven tons of fresh produce was harvested at the Coogan Farm Giving Garden and distributed through our Mobile Pantry.

OUR YEAR-ROUND, TIME-TESTED PARTNERSHIP WITH ORGANIZED LABOR THAT WORKS FOR ALL. United Way of Southeastern Connecticut has maintained a long-standing partnership with the generous members of organized labor. Members participate in every facet of our work and truly exemplify what it means to Live United. We thank them for their unwavering dedication to our work and community.

Just some of the activities that members of organized labor participate in include UCAN union counseling, Stamp Out Hunger food drive, Workers’ Memorial, numerous volunteer projects, food drives, and the AFL-CIO Golf Tournament to benefit our Project Warm-up program. The Spinnaker Club

Rodney Butler, Chairman, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation United Way Leadership Giving Chair Thank you for your support of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. Through collective action - doing what no one person, organization, or business can do alone - we can achieve so much more. By coming together to tackle important community issues, we are able to create systemic change that benefits all of us. In this section of our Annual Report, we acknowledge the generosity of our leadership givers. An annual contribution of $1,000 or more grants you membership in our Spinnaker Club. Annual gifts of $10,000 or more qualify you as members of The Toqueville Society. We are sincerely grateful to you for leading the way in supporting our region through a leadership gift as we work together to fight hunger and food insecurity, provide a safety net of services for those in need, and support an essential network of local health and human service programs.

Because to live better, we must Live United.

Thank you! United Way of Southeastern Connecticut Annual Report • 2017 Spinnaker Club

The Tocqueville Society The Tocqueville Society bears the fleur de lis symbol, representing faith, wisdom, and valor. Members have the ability, the generosity, and the courage to place themselves at the pinnacle of charitable giving and community service. The Society derives its name from Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat of the 1800s who was inspired by the American spirit of philanthropy. His observations formed the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed study of American society and politics, published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840. Tocqueville wrote extensively on the power of voluntary giving for the common good and today, his ideals continue as we Live United. We extend our gratitude to the following members of The Tocqueville Society for their extraordinary, generous gifts of $10,000 or more:

Robert & Deborah Burnside Steve H. Chevalier Charles Doughty David & Danielle Horne John & Mary LaMattina Marie-Claire Peakman & Phil Iredale Felix Rappaport Robert & Jackie Soper Mike & Carol Toner
