Displaying a dazzling tribute to patriotism and gratitude, Union City recently orchestrated a spectacular Veterans Day Ceremony at the Gathering Place, honoring the selfless dedication of the brave men and women who have served our nation. This year, the limelight focused on Union City employees who are veterans hailing from diverse branches of the military—the Army, US Coast Guard, US Marines, US Navy, and US Air Force. The community gathered proudly to celebrate these individuals' extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.

The ceremony featured a tribute to the employees who have faithfully served in defense of our country. We were honored to have US Army Veteran Colonel William E. Garner as our guest speaker. Colonel Garner spent 26 years on active duty specializing in strategic planning and logistics operations, with duty assignments spanning Fort Stewart, Georgia, Germany, Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland, The Pentagon, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Korea, Kuwait, and Fort McPherson, Georgia.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT SPOTLIGHTS 21ST-CENTURY POLICING LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES COMING TOGETHER TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

The Union City Police Department hosted a dynamic National Night Out Against Crime event on October 7 at the Hwy 29 Ballfields, creating an atmosphere brimming with unity. The evening unfolded as a delightful blend of fun, food, and safety activities, bringing together community members, local law enforcement agencies, and various Union City Departments. Beyond fostering neighborly connections, the event provided an exceptional opportunity for the community to engage with the dedicated officers of the Union City Police Department.

Transforming October into "UC Pinktober" in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, the community united in pink powder to commemorate a decade of progress in the fight against breast cancer.

The heart of the Pinktober 5K beats with a loud message — no one fights alone. With a focus on awareness, the event is a powerful reminder that solidarity is the key to overcoming adversity. The commitment to fundraising for breast cancer advocacy, research, and support echoed loudly, thanks in part to the generous $10,000 contribution from our sponsor, Green for Life Environmental. CHEF IT UP WITH MUSHROOM STUFFED PORK TENDERLOIN Indulge in the savory delight of mushroom-stuffed pork tenderloin, where succulent pork meets a rich and earthy mushroom filling, creating a culinary masterpiece bursting with flavor.

Number of servings: 6

Ingredients 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing 4 slices bacon, chopped 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 pork tenderloins (2 to 2 1/2 pounds total), trimmed 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Cooking Instructions Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook until crisp, about 8 minutes. Add the mushrooms, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste; cook until the mushrooms are soft, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in the breadcrumbs and all but 2 tablespoons parsley. Let cool.

Soak 10 to 12 toothpicks in water to prevent them from burning. Rinse the pork and pat dry.

Butterfly the pork: Make a 1-inch-deep incision down the length of each tenderloin; do not cut all the way through. Open the meat like a book so the tenderloins lie flat.

Cover the pork with plastic wrap; pound with the flat side of a meat mallet until about 1/2 inch thick, starting from the middle and working outward. Spread the mushroom mixture over the 2 tenderloins. Starting with a long side, tightly roll up each tenderloin. Secure the seams with the toothpicks.

Preheat a grill to medium high; brush the grates with olive oil. Brush the pork rolls with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill, turning, until a thermometer inserted into the center of the pork registers 140 degrees F, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board to rest, about 10 minutes.

In a united effort to save lives, the Union City Fire Department and The American Red Cross of Georgia are making strides to enhance fire safety. As part of the nationwide "Sound the Alarm" initiative, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers installed advanced smoke alarms to protect over 160 residents in The Oakley apartment complex. The department's dedication to fire safety and prevention is evident as they actively identify high-risk communities that require these essential safety devices and work diligently to ensure timely installations.

Addressing the diverse needs of residents, the Union City Fire Department goes the extra mile by installing specialized strobe alarms and bed shakers for those with hearing disabilities. This thoughtful approach adds an extra layer of security, showcasing a steadfast focus on fire safety beyond conventional measures.
