Let’s keep creating together!
n our rapidly evolving society, the health and well-being of our communities must remain a top priority, especially considering the alarming rise in
illegal drug use and gun violence in our schools This situation underscores the urgent need for effective strategies to reduce stress and redirect aggression, bullying, peer pressure, and trauma that many of our children are experiencing.
As the mayor of Union City, I urge the Georgia Legislature to recognize the critical role that the arts play in shaping effective health policies. The intersection of arts and health transcends mere cultural enrichment. It is a vital public health strategy that enhances community resilience, improves mental health and fosters overall well-being
Historically, health policy discussions have largely focused on physical health, often overlooking the mental and emotional dimensions that are equally crucial. Extensive research demonstrates that engagement with the arts yields significant health benefits Studies published by the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health indicate that participation in creative activities can reduce anxiety and depression while fostering a sense of community and belonging. In Union City, where diversity is one of our greatest strengths, the arts can bridge divides and address the social determinants of health
The Christian Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 17:22 that “a cheerful heart is good medicine,” emphasizing the importance of joy and creativity in our lives. This principle underscores the need for our state to support arts initiatives as part of a comprehensive health strategy, particularly in these challenging times.
Moreover, incorporating the arts into health initiatives is essential for addressing health inequities. Communities facing poverty and limited access to healthcare often encounter barriers to cultural enrichment Research from the World Health Organization supports the idea that arts-based interventions can lead to improved health outcomes in disadvantaged populations. By investing in arts programming, we can help bridge these gaps. Initiatives such as community art projects, music therapy, and

creative workshops empower residents to express themselves, enhance mental health and promote social cohesion All help to alleviate the burdens of trauma and stress
In Union City, we are dedicated
to ensuring that all residents have access to these transformative experiences Our administration will launch several programs aimed at merging arts and health, collaborating with local artists and healthcare providers to create workshops that promote mental health through creative expression. These programs not only provide therapeutic benefits but also facilitate crucial conversations about mental health, reducing stigma and fostering a culture of openness
The economic implications of this integration are equally significant. A vibrant arts scene attracts tourism, generates jobs and stimulates local economies. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, every dollar invested in the arts yields an esti- mated $4 in economic return This economic vitality can translate into better funding for healthcare services, community programs, and educational initiatives, creating a virtuous cycle that enhances the quality of life in every Georgia community.
are not treated as separate entities but as interconnected forces that uplift our communities It is not merely a matter of funding the arts or enhancing healthcare; it is about acknowledging that the well-being of our citizens hinges on a holistic approach that values creativity as much as physical health does. This is a call to action.
With the recent state budget surplus, the Georgia Legislature should prioritize this initiative in their funding decisions By allocating resources spe-
cifically for arts integration into health programs, we can serve all Georgia cities, fostering healthier, more resilient communities statewide.
I call on my fellow leaders, policymakers and citizens to champion the integration of arts into health strategies The arts are not an afterthought; they are a critical component of a compre-
However, to harness this potential, we must advocate for policies that explicitly support the integration of arts into health frameworks. This involves not only funding arts initiatives but also ensuring that healthcare providers recognize the value of creative practices in patient care Health systems should be encouraged to include art therapists, music programs and community art events as essential components of a holistic approach to health.
Leveraging technology to expand access to the arts is vital, particularly for individuals facing physical or geographic barriers Virtual workshops and online galleries can provide artistic experiences to those unable to engage in traditional settings. By embracing innovative solutions, we can ensure that the benefits of the arts are accessible to all, regardless of their circumstances.
As we look ahead, let us commit to a future where arts and health policies
that our community reflects this beauty in both art and health
The benefits of arts on health and well-being can be seen throughout the lifespan From early childhood through adolescence, arts education supports the social and emotional needs of students, helping them cope with feelings and fostering resilience. For older adults, increased participation in the arts has been linked to positive health outcomes. Creative arts therapies and arts-in-health programs can address specific physical and mental health conditions and improve the quality of life for patients and caregivers. In neighborhoods, artsbased strategies can enhance social cohesion, promote health equity, and contribute to community well-being.
Let us act decisively without a partisan posture to ensure that our
hensive strategy. Let us heed the words policies reflect the urgency of this vital of Ecclesiastes 3:11, which reminds us that “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Together, we can ensure initiative for all Georgians. And always know this: I love you and there ain’t nothing you can do about it!

UNION CITY SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER THROUGH TOY AND FOOD DRIVE
This year’s Annual Toy & Food Drive at the Gathering Place Community Center represented the true spirit of giving and togetherness that defines Union City. The event brought smiles to children’s faces and filled the hearts of families with warmth, hope, and holiday cheer. With festive holiday music setting the tone, families received food, clothing, and toys for their little ones. Thanks to the collective efforts of City staff, local organizations, and generous sponsors, we were able to give back to our community in a meaningful way.
Union City sends many thanks to the incredible sponsors who made this event possible, including AIT Worldwide, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.-Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter, the Union City Senior Walking Club, and local businesses like Fusion Bar, Bella Nissan, and Infiniti of South Atlanta. Additionally, our dedicated departments—City Hall, Fire Department, Police Department, and Parks & Recreation— worked tirelessly to ensure the events' success. Notable community partners such as the Corbett Group, Edge Connex, AARP, and Dendreon also played an essential role, along with individuals and organizations like Judge Ronald Freeman and the Freeman Law Firm, Jermaine Ralph and Alabama A&M Alumni, Alabama State University Alumni, and the Smith Family. We’re especially thankful for support from Dodge Jeep Ram with Derek Jackson, Harry Peadon of The Prime House Direct, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Newnan Alumni Chapter.
These extraordinary collaborations made the event a resounding success, showcasing the powerful impact of unity and compassion. As we reflect on this heartwarming day, we’re reminded of the importance of coming together to support one another, especially during the holiday season. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the holidays brighter for Union City families.
Wishing you and your family a season filled with love, laughter, and all the happiness that the holidays bring.
Happy New Year
May the holiday season bring abundant joy, warmth and unity for our cherished community.
