Five Ways to Manage Moving Stress

Your move is the start of an amazing journey. And like any worthwhile endeavor, it can take a lot of courage to take the first step. Although you may find yourself feeling a little overwhelmed, the best way to stop worrying in its tracks is to take charge — and charge forward. Here are five proven ways to move your mood from minor distress to major de-stressed.

DON’T STUMBLE AT THE STARTING LINE

Even in the best-case scenario, moving interrupts daily life. Don’t make it tougher by leaving things to the last minute. If you’ve got a summer move on your radar, lock in your move date ASAP. That way, you’re more likely to get your preferred date and time.

STEP AWAY FROM THE FRAY

Even if you’re successfully packing and purging, few things are more unsettling than seeing your possessions in disarray. Our advice? Find a place in your home — such as a patio, guestroom or basement nook — that’s away from the moverelated mess. Use it to meditate, reflect or straight-up unwind.

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

Though items like scented candles, lotion and massages fall under the self-care umbrella, hitting a bucket of golf balls, curling up with a good book or strumming a guitar can produce an equally calming effect. If you’ve planned your move well, you’ve earned a few moments of quality downtime. And remember, a full-service mover is there to pick up some of the slack so you can build in time to relax.

RESEARCH YOUR NEW NEIGHBORHOOD

Make a list of places you want to check out and things you want to do in your new neighborhood once you arrive. In addition to building excitement, it’ll help you get the lay of the land. Need advice? Our city guides can help.

SAY YOUR FAREWELLS

Memories were made and friendships forged at your soonto-be former address. Getting closure by visiting your favorite spots or friends ties up loose ends and readies you for the new beginning that lies ahead. Get more advice on saying goodbye to those near and dear.

ASK THE EXPERT

My moving company says it can’t load my plants onto the van. Why?

Keith M., Subject Matter Expert for Mayflower, replies:

Officially, federal regulations designate plants as perishable items; therefore, they cannot be transported by regulated moving vans for distances greater than 150 miles or for a period of more than 24 hours. It’s also a potential claims issue, which is why Mayflower includes plants on our list of non-allowables. Longdistance moves usually take several days and we can’t assume responsibility if your plant is harmed by a lack of water, light or extreme temperatures. For shorter moves, movers will sometimes make exceptions. However, it’s always best to check beforehand.

If you’re driving to your new home, think about taking plants along with you in the car. Keep in mind, if it’s a multi-day trip, plants should be brought inside when you overnight en route. Summer moves can be especially tough on plants. Never let them sit too long in a hot car!

Alternatively, you could ship your plant using USPS, UPS or FedEx. Another thought is to take cuttings off of your favorite plants to bring with you instead. Then, gift them to a close friend or neighbor.

HOW TO SAIL THROUGH YOUR SUMMER MOVE WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT

Peak moving season runs from early May through September. For a lot of people, it’s the most convenient and comfortable time to relocate.

Though no two moves are the same, there are some basic principles to apply to summer moves.

If you’ve already scheduled your move date, congratulations — you’re well on your way. If not, it’s best to begin gathering moving quotes right away. When possible, we suggest doing so eight weeks ahead of your planned date.

PURGE UNWANTED ITEMS BEFOREHAND

If you’re moving long-distance, know that you pay by weight. Since peak moving season incurs the highest rates, one way to save money is to reduce the number of household goods you move. It’s a perfect time to donate items to a shelter, secondhand shop or food pantry. Our partnership with Move For Hunger is a great place to start.

And the nice weather’s a great time to hold a garage or porch sale.

DRESS TO KEEP COOL

Dressing in light, breathable clothing is a must for move day. Breathable fabrics like cotton are go-tos for an airy, cool feel. Make sure your clothing on the day of the move is loose fitting and try to find clothing that wicks away sweat and moisture. Avoid dark colored clothing that absorbs the heat. Instead, plan to wear light-colored items — whites and neutrals work best.

And although summer is flip-flop season, this is not the day to have your toes exposed. Wear closedtoed shoes that are comfortable and breathable. Lastly, don’t forget a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

CHECK THE WEATHER

It may seem like a given, but don’t forget to check the weather a day or two before your move for inclement conditions, such as heavy rainstorms or tornadoes. Since thunderstorms can pop up during the summer, keep an eye on the forecast and have a plan in place in case it starts pouring.

DON’T FORGET THE ESSENTIALS

Set aside a box or bag of immediate essentials to have ready as soon as you arrive — things like toiletries, pajamas, chargers and any medications. You’ll appreciate being able to freshen up, charge your phone or just relax after a long day of moving.

TURN ON THE AC AT YOUR NEW PLACE

Don’t make the mistake of forgetting to cool down your new home before the big day. Entering a cool home on a sizzling day is the difference between a smooth transition and a sticky one.

Turn your utilities on a day or two before you move in. If you can’t be there to turn the AC on in person, try contacting your real estate agent or property manager to do it for you. Placing portable fans near your entryways is another great way to provide heat relief.

See what we recommend including in a first-night box.

SOME TIPS ON TIMING

On a budget? Move during the middle two weeks of the month since movers often charge more during the first and last weeks of the month.

If you’re looking to save even more money, Monday through Thursday moves often cost you less than moving over a weekend.

If possible, book your move during the morning slot when everyone, your movers included, is fresh; this also avoids delays resulting from earlier jobs.

Savvy Tips To Avoid Moving Scams

Unscrupulous, fly-by-night companies with deceptive bait-andswitch tactics prey on consumers. Unfortunately, the moving industry isn’t immune to the problem so it’s crucial to choose a reputable moving company.

But how can you distinguish the genuine ones from bad actors? Being a savvy and well-informed consumer is paramount. Here are some tips from our pros.

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH

Before choosing a moving company, do your homework. Look for reputable companies with positive reviews and ratings from trusted sources like the Better Business Bureau or Angi.

BEWARE OF SUSPICIOUSLY LOW BIDS

If a moving company offers a quote that seems too good to be true, it probably is. A suspiciously low bid could indicate hidden fees or subpar service quality. Don’t fall for it — opt for transparency and reliability instead.

CHECK FOR PROPER LICENSING AND INSURANCE

Legitimate moving companies should be properly licensed and insured. Verify this information before hiring any movers to ensure you’re protected in case of accidents or damage during the moving process. A great place to start is the Federal Motor and Safety Administration (FMCSA) website, which features a registered mover database.

GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING

Don’t rely solely on verbal agreements. Insist on written contracts that outline all details of the move, including services provided, delivery dates and costs. This helps protect you from any misunderstandings or disputes down the line.

AVOID CASH-ONLY TRANSACTIONS

Be wary of movers who insist on cash payments only or demand large upfront deposits. Reputable companies offer various payment options and are transparent about their billing practices. Avoid any movers who seem reluctant to provide receipts or official documentation.

TRUST YOUR GUT

If something feels off or if you encounter pushy sales tactics, listen to your instincts. Moving is a significant undertaking, and you deserve to work with a company that makes you feel confident and comfortable throughout the process. Remember, moving scams can happen to anyone, but with a little diligence and awareness, you can protect yourself and your belongings from becoming victims.

Spring 2024 Welcome HOME 10

In April 2024, Move Coordinator Jamie Baleno celebrated her fifth anniversary with Mayflower agent Chipman Relocation & Logistics. For three of them, she received our coveted Heart of Quality award for her commitment to — and passion for — service excellence.

BALENO’S JOURNEY

Admittedly, Baleno’s professional path wasn’t direct, yet each step prepared her for what came next.

“My first job after college was in retail,” she says. “I gained the confidence and skills to deal directly with customers, as well as the empathy to put myself in their place and anticipate what they want or need before they do.”

Baleno then started and ran her own day care center, igniting the entrepreneur in her. It taught her how to manage a small business, from budgeting to interacting with customers.

“I also did a brief stint as an Uber driver,” she says. “It showed me how to pivot to a Plan B if traffic, an accident or other unknowns suddenly affected the trip.”

When her best friend — a move coordinator at Chipman in San Ramon, California — said they needed another move coordinator as soon as possible, Baleno thought carefully about the opportunity. Realizing it combined many of the skills she acquired, she decided to take the leap.

PROACTIVITY AND PLANNING FOR THE WIN

Baleno believes in getting a jump on her days, so she usually logs on early to get a sense of what’s in store.

“Being the first one to reach out

during move day lets customers know they have someone to contact if things go awry,” she says, noting being proactive prevents issues down the road.

“To the best of my ability, I want to make sure things are done correctly and cost efficiently,” she says.

How does Baleno handle it all?

For one thing, she takes plenty of notes, particularly at the start of the customer relationship.

“A customer may tell me early on they’re thinking about paring down their possessions by holding a garage or porch sale,” she says. “This information goes directly into the customer’s file.”

As move day draws near, she revisits the conversation since she may need to requote the move based on how much they downsized.

In other cases, a customer may express concern about heirloom furniture or another precious item.

“By carefully noting this, I can recommend an additional coverage or other value adds that sets them at ease,” she says.

PEAK PERFORMANCE

As any move coordinator, estimator or agent will tell you, the calendar fills between mid-May and September. The earlier a customer can plan a move, the better — especially if there’s a specific date in mind.

During the summer, moving companies often book in advance, leaving available movers and dates more limited.

Booking your move well in advance lets us more efficiently plan and manage everything around your relocation and helps us put time on your side, she notes.

Feeling stressed about the prospect of moving? Baleno takes it to heart.

“I help customers manage their stress by listening intently, gauging

their needs and answering their questions as directly and honestly as I can,” she says. “In many cases they’re not sure where to begin. I tell them, ‘Just start with one box.’”

ON BEING MOVERS’ BFF

To Baleno, trust is a big part of any customer relationship. So how does she earn it?

“Proactiveness and keeping customers informed — from the introductory call until move day and beyond,” she says.

“I always tell customers, ‘I’m here for you,’” she says. And it’s clear she means it.

How regularly Baleno reaches out is up to the customer.

“They tell me what ‘okay’ feels like,” she says. “But I want them to know I am always available to them. I want to exceed their expectations. Knowing that I was able to take weight off their shoulders is at the heart of what I do.”

Getting Your Home Ready for the Big Move

Before you even list your home — never mind start packing boxes — it’s essential to get your home in tip-top shape. Here are three key maintenance tasks we recommend before making the move.

Want more tips to ready your home for a move? We’ve got you — click here.

Keep Things Running Smoothly Inside

First up, give your HVAC system some love. It’s a good idea to schedule a professional inspection to ensure everything is working efficiently for the new owners.

Don’t forget about plumbing. Check for leaks and fix any dripping faucets. If your soon-to-be former home is in a colder climate, make sure the pipes are insulated to prevent freezing.

Electrical systems need attention, too. Test outlets, switches and circuit breakers to ensure they’re all in working order.

Spruce

Up Spaces Outside

Time to tackle the great outdoors. Trim back trees and bushes to make room for movers and to keep your yard looking tidy. A little landscaping can go a long way in boosting curb appeal.

Don’t neglect your gutters and drains. Clear out any debris to prevent clogs and potential water damage.

Safety and Cleanliness Inside

Pesky pests can quickly become unwanted roommates. Take the time to address any pest issues before you move. A professional inspection and treatment can give you — and your buyers — peace of mind.

Safety first. Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries, if needed.

Give your home a good cleaning. Focus on high-traffic areas and don’t forget to declutter. Getting rid of unwanted items now will make packing and unpacking a breeze later on.

And while you’re at it, give outdoor drains a once-over to avoid any nasty surprises during a rainstorm.

Remember your outdoor tools. Give lawnmowers and trimmers a good servicing and be sure to drain any fuel from gas-powered equipment before packing them up.

SEDUM Transform your yard with this vibrant, hardy succulent that flourishes in diverse environs. From ground cover to upright stems with star-shaped flowers, inspo abounds.
