Managing the Cost of a Move
Thank Your Movers for a Job Well Done
Every day United Van Lines drivers go above and beyond in terms of providing quality service, dedicating themselves to the task at hand and making customers feel well taken care of at both ends of their moving journey. So how can you show them you appreciate the hard work they’ve done on your behalf? It’s really very simple.
A “THANK YOU” AND HANDSHAKE are always welcome. A smile can go a long way, too. Remember, this kind of positive interaction may be the best part of their day.
MOVING IS HUNGRY—AND THIRSTY — WORK . Water or sports drinks can provide a much-needed boost to the moving crew. If your move happens around mealtime, ordering takeout or a pizza — or providing snacks like an energy bar — will keep hunger pangs at bay.
GOODIE BAGS containing hand sanitizer, moist wipes or even a gift card to a local truck stop or coffee shop are wonderful — and practical — ways to show the moving crew you value their efforts and expertise.
POST A POSITIVE REVIEW ONLINE . If you have a positive move experience, let others know about it. Be sure to mention specific things you appreciated about your move that others will find useful and informative. Your United Van Lines moving crew and agent will be so grateful!
TIP, IF YOU’RE SO INCLINED . While United Van Lines has no official guidelines or policies around tipping, a little extra for a job well done is always welcome.

Winter Wonderland or Winter Woe? Tips for a Smooth Move
Winter is a beautiful season, but the weather is not always ideal for moving. That’s especially true if you live “up north.”
Between the shorter days, icy roads and unpredictable weather, it can feel like a real challenge. But fear not! With a little planning and preparation, you can conquer your winter move and turn it into a smooth operation.
CLEAR THE WAY
Whether you’re moving in or out, clear walkways and driveways are essential. Ice and snow can be slippery and dangerous, so make sure paths are clear of obstacles. If you’re moving into a new place, try to visit beforehand to assess the situation. And don’t forget your movers — they’ll appreciate a clear path to load and unload your belongings.
UTILITIES AND BEYOND
PROTECT YOUR FLOORS
Winter weather can track in a mess of mud, salt and slush. Our movers will help protect your floors by placing mats at entrances, covering hardwood floors and using floor runners or cardboard to cover carpeted areas.
Moving in the winter can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Our experienced movers know how to handle winter conditions and will work to make your move as seamless as possible.

Make sure your utilities are turned on and working properly at your new place before move-in day. Shorter winter days mean less time to deal with unexpected issues.
BUNDLE UP
Even if you’re hiring professional movers, you’ll likely spend some time outdoors on moving day. Dress in layers, wear warm gloves and pack a change of clothes just in case. You never know when you might need to switch into dry clothes.
WEATHER WOES
Let’s be honest, winter weather is a wild card. Snowstorms and freezing temperatures can throw a wrench in your moving plans. The best thing you can do is stay on top of the forecast. Keep an eye on weather updates for both your old and new location, especially as your move date approaches.
If a blizzard is brewing, it might be wise to reschedule. Your moving company will understand, and they’ll work with you to find a new date. Flexibility is key here.
WINTER SUPPLIES
It’s always smart to be prepared for winter weather. Keep shovels, salt and sand at the ready at both your old and new homes. A space heater can also come in handy for warming up chilly rooms — but use it with caution.

ADVICE FROM UNITED’S OFFICIAL MOVING MAVEN
I’m afraid I’ll choose the wrong type of survey! Which is better and why?
Dear Betsey,
Is there a right or wrong way to get my move quote? On the one hand, I can have an estimator come to my place in person. United also has a Virtual Survey option that can be completed with a smartphone or tablet. I’m curious: Which is more accurate? And what would my mover prefer?
ANXIOUS IN ANAHEIM
Dear Anxious,
First of all, there’s nothing to be anxious about. Both the inperson and Virtual Surveys are accurate — and your United mover will be more than happy to accommodate you either way.
Some folks prefer having their estimator do an in-person walkthrough of their home and possessions. Simply schedule a convenient time in advance and they’ll handle the rest. Of course, it’s possible your mover may only be available during regular business hours. If you have an office job or other commitments, be sure to plan for that.
With a Virtual Survey, you do the legwork, walking through your space with your tablet or smartphone while the estimator guides you through the process of capturing images of your possessions. Many people prefer the Virtual Survey because it’s flexible from a scheduling perspective. The estimator also has the flexibility to view the video you made multiple times to ensure the accuracy of the quote. It can often be performed in the early evening hours or even on weekends. In most cases, you’ll also get your move quote more quickly.
Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that both inperson and Virtual Surveys need to be scheduled in advance. Want to know more? Check here for a deeper dive.

Breaking the Moving News: Navigating Tough Conversations
Moving is exciting, but breaking the news to loved ones can be emotional. Whether you’re heading across town or across the country, these conversations can be tough. Here’s how to share your big news with grace and understanding.
KIDS AND THE BIG MOVE
Kids are resilient, but moving can be difficult. Be open and honest about the move and explain it in a way they can understand. Get them involved in the process by letting them help with packing and choosing their new room decor. Most importantly, reassure them you’ll still be there for them, even though you’re in a different place.
TALKING TO LOVED ONES
Telling your parents or adult children you’re moving can be especially tricky. It’s best to have an in-person conversation, preferably with your partner by your side. Be honest about your reasons for moving and emphasize the positive aspects of your decision. Remember, they love you and want what’s best for you, even if it means a long-distance relationship.
FRIENDS AND THE FAREWELL
Telling your friends you’re moving can be bittersweet. Plan a special gathering to share the news and celebrate your friendship. Remember, distance doesn’t have to mean the end of your bond.
STAYING CONNECTED
In today’s digital age, it’s easier than ever to stay in touch with loved ones. Schedule regular video calls, share photos and make plans to visit each other. With a little effort, you can maintain strong relationships even from afar.
Remember while moving is a big change, it’s also an exciting new chapter. By approaching these conversations with honesty, empathy and understanding, you can navigate this transition with grace.

What Affects the Cost?
No matter how you choose to move, several factors will influence the final price tag.
DISTANCE
Breaking Down the Cost of Moving Out of State
Moving across state lines is a big deal — there’s planning, paperwork and, of course, the not-so-small matter of cost. So, let’s talk about what goes into the cost of moving.
DIY or Hire a Pro?
One of the first choices you’ll make is whether to tackle the move yourself or hire professional movers. Each option has its pros and cons.
If you’re up for a challenge and have the time and energy, moving yourself can possibly save money. But don’t forget to factor in costs like renting a truck and buying supplies, as well as paying for gas and lodging on the road.
Professional movers lessen the stress of the moving process. While it may cost more, you’ll get the benefit of their expertise and equipment, and that will bring you peace of mind.
The farther you’re going, the more it will likely cost.
SIZE OF YOUR MOVE
How much stuff do you have? Heavier loads will probably be bigger or more expensive.
TIME OF YEAR
Moving during peak season (summer) and around holidays is generally more expensive.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Need packing help, storage or car shipping? These services add to the total cost.
Getting a Realistic Estimate
To get a good idea of what you’ll spend, it’s essential to get estimates from a variety of moving options. When working with a moving company, they’ll typically send someone to assess your belongings. United also offers a virtual survey option so you can complete the process digitally using a smartphone or tablet. This allows for an accurate quote without a surveyor having to set foot in your home.
Tips for Saving Money
When you’re looking to cut moving costs, preparing and planning makes all the difference in the world.
DECLUTTER
The less you move, the less it costs. Sell, donate or toss items you don’t need.
DIY WHEN YOU CAN
Handle packing yourself to save money.
COMPARE QUOTES
Get estimates from several movers to find the best deal — provided it isn’t “too good to be true.”
CONSIDER OFF-PEAK MOVING
Moving during the off-season can often save you money.
Here for it All

Why Hiring Professional Movers is a No-Brainer
Moving is an ordeal. There’s no sugarcoating it. But did you know that hiring professional movers can actually make your life easier? From saving time to reducing stress, the benefits are plentiful. Let’s dive in!
TIME IS MONEY (AND SANITY)
Movers are pros at what they do. They’ve got the experience and the equipment to get the job done quickly and efficiently. This means more time for you to focus on other important things, like updating your address or finding your new favorite takeout spot.
STRESS LESS, MOVE MORE
Packing, lifting and coordinating a whole move can be overwhelming. Professional movers take care of the heavy lifting (literally), so you can focus on the exciting parts of your new chapter.
CUSTOM CARE FOR YOUR BELONGINGS
Every move is unique, and your belongings deserve special treatment. Professional movers offer customizable services, from packing fragile items to providing climate-controlled storage. They’ve got the expertise to handle everything with care.
PEACE OF MIND
Knowing your belongings are in good hands is priceless. Reputable moving companies have insurance and procedures in place to protect your stuff. Plus, they’ll handle the logistics, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
While hiring movers might seem like an added expense, it can actually save you money in the long run. Consider the cost of renting a truck, buying packing supplies and possibly damaging your belongings. Professional movers often offer competitive rates and can provide a stress-free moving experience.

WARDROBE
WOES? NO PROBLEM!
First things first, your closet needs a makeover. Resist the urge to buy a whole new wardrobe before the move. Instead, focus on a few essentials to tide you over until you can explore your new city’s fashion scene. Nothing beats trying on clothes in person, right?
If you’re heading south, pack light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Don’t forget sun protection – hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are your new best friends. For colder climates, layers are key. Wool and heavy cotton will keep you cozy without bulk. And hey, a few items from your old life might come in handy for those surprise visits back home.
Trading Snow Boots for Flip-Flops ( or Vice Versa )
Moving to a new climate is exciting, but it also means adjusting to a whole new world of weather. Don't worry, you're not alone! Let's break down some tips to help you weather the change (pun intended).
HOME SWEET HOME (AND CLIMATE-CONTROLLED!)
Before you dive into DIY projects, do a little research on what works best in your new area. For warmer climates, focus on keeping cool. Ceiling fans are a lifesaver, and energy-efficient ones won’t break the bank. Blackout curtains and attic fans can also be extremely helpful. And don’t forget about a programmable thermostat — it’s like having a personal assistant for your AC.
If you’re moving to a chillier place, it’s all about keeping the heat in. Seal up those drafty windows, consider a fireplace or wood-burning stove for extra coziness, and invest in a humidifier to combat dry air. And if your home is on the older side, new windows might be a game-changer.
Remember, adjusting to a new climate takes time. Be patient with yourself, explore your new city and meet new people. Before you know it, you’ll be a seasoned pro at handling whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Explore other “Considerations When Moving to a Different Climate.”
EMBRACE YOUR NEW NORMAL
Moving means a fresh start! Enjoy the outdoors in warmer climates with hikes, picnics or swimming. In colder places, find indoor hobbies like cooking or crafting. The key is to embrace your new surroundings and make the most of it.
A LITTLE INSULATION GOES A LONG WAY
While insulating your entire house is a big job, adding insulation to your attic is usually pretty doable. It helps keep things cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Your wallet will thank you.

Moving with the Times
Moving is a big, exciting and — let’s face it — involved life change. But what if technology could take some of the weight off your shoulders? That’s the goal at United Van Lines, where innovation is as much a part of the moving process as packing boxes. We sat down with Jaime Winkler, executive vice president of business transformation, to learn how technology is changing how we move.
Tech That Simplifies Moving
Gone are the days of endless paperwork and uncertainty. Today, technology is at the heart of the moving experience.
“Customers have higher expectations than ever when it comes to transparency and access to information,” Winkler explains. “Understandably, they want convenience and flexibility, as well as quality and reliable service. That’s what we aim to deliver with every move, and at every touchpoint.”
One of the most significant changes making this possible is our Virtual Survey offering. Instead of scheduling an in-home visit, customers can now get an accurate cost estimate through a video call. Done via a progressive web app, sales reps can share their screen and pricing and quote during the initial call. And there’s no need to download an app for one-time use.
“Our goal is to make the moving process more efficient, transparent and userfriendly, So, we’re using technology to simplify and streamline processes throughout the move journey.”
- JAIME WINKLER
Designed to meet our customers where they’re at, surveys — whether virtual or in-person — can be scheduled directly within a few seconds, when it’s most convenient for our customers.
“Virtual Surveys offer convenience in scheduling while helping customers make the most of their time,” Winkler says. “Efficient and accurate, it’s also recorded for future reference.”
Once customers have booked their move, the MyUnited Move Portal becomes their go-to resource. This online platform allows them to track their shipment, schedule services and even pay their bill.
“The portal lets our customers track all major move milestones and manage critical events in one place,” Winkler says.
But the innovation doesn’t stop there. United Van Lines has also developed the Flex App, which allows van operators and crews to build customers’ inventory and share it within the MyUnited Move Portal, ensuring there’s a digital, visual inventory of their belongings. Having photos of items provides peace of mind and also simplifies the claims process if something goes wrong.
A Glimpse Into the Future
Winkler is excited about the potential of technology to further revolutionize the moving industry.
“There is no doubt artificial
intelligence will play a critical role in many aspects of the moving process,” she says. While she couldn’t share specific details about upcoming projects, Winkler hinted at the potential for AI to optimize shipping routes, improve customer service and create more personalized experiences.
Ultimately, the goal is to make moving as stress-free as possible for our customers.
“Surfacing information to the right person at the right time during the move journey can be the difference between a seamless transition to their next home or a stressful ordeal moving across the country,” Winkler says. With a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction, United Van Lines is leading the way in transforming the moving industry. So, the next time you’re faced with the daunting task of moving, rest assured that technology is on your side.

Managing the Cost of a Longdistance Move
At some point in your move planning process, you may wonder about the cost of hiring a professional moving company like United Van Lines versus going the DIY route. The question becomes even more critical if you’re working with a lump sum moving budget from your employer and want to be sure every single dollar is spent wisely.
Ultimately, it comes down to the amount of money you’re comfortable spending and whether you’re up to the challenge of a DIY move. That said, leaving the heavy lifting to the pros saves time and energy. What’s more, when you add up all that’s included with a full-service or traditional move, the price difference may be less than you think.
Insider Tip
When getting a cost estimate from a moving company, be sure to ask for an itemized breakdown of how your estimate is calculated and also what type of moving estimates you receive. A full-service moving quote from United Van Lines always includes a list of services for your move, giving you total visibility of how your cost is determined.
