From May through early September, you’ll find United Van Lines in the middle of peak season. It’s understandable why the summer months are so popular for moving since the weather is more predictable. It’s also when school is out for the kids, work schedules tend to be more flexible, and getting it all done before the Labor Day rush just makes sense. That said, planning a summer move takes a bit more preparation than other times of year — and it will likely cost more, too.
So how do you get through a warm weather move without losing your cool? We have some tips from our pros.
If you’ve already picked your move date, great job, you’re well on your way. If not, get your moving quote today. Whenever possible, allow yourself eight weeks before your planned date.
Get rid of stuff you don’t need before your move since the cost of a long-distance move is tied to weight. Since rates are highest in peak season, reducing what you move can save money. Consider donating items or hosting a garage sale
Dress comfortably on moving day. Light, breathable clothes made of cotton help keep you cool. Loose fits that wick away sweat are best. Avoid dark colors that absorb heat and go for lighter colors and neutrals instead. Wear closed-toe shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, too.
Check the weather forecast and have a plan in the event inclement weather strikes on the big day.
Have essentials boxed up and ready when you arrive. Our “First Night Moving Box” checklist can help. Keeping things like toiletries, pajamas, phone chargers and necessary medications handy lets you freshen up and avoid frustration after a long day of moving.

Turn on the AC at your new place a day or two before you move. If you can’t be there, ask your real estate agent or landlord to do it. Fans by the doors also provide relief. Don’t make the mistake of moving into an uncooled home on a hot day.

ADVICE FROM UNITED’S OFFICIAL MOVING MAVEN
Dear Betsey,
Years ago, my great aunt gifted me one of her prized African Violets, which I’ve cared for faithfully ever since. I’m moving from southeastern Pennsylvania to central Massachusetts and now my moving company says they can’t take any plants on the van. Why is this – and what can I do?
CONFUSED IN CONSHOHOCKEN
Dear Confused,
Well, for starters, don’t take it personally! Because plants are categorized as perishable items, federal law does not allow them to be transported by regulated moving vans for distances greater than 150 miles or for more than 24 hours. Also, long-distance movers like United can’t assume responsibility if your plant gets harmed from a lack of water and light and possibly extreme temperature changes while in transit.
I hope you’re feeling less confused now. For a deeper dive into the why’s and how’s of moving plants, pets and other items, check this out. And if you have any questions, ask your representative.
Best, Betsey
