While you’re enjoying the scenic route, United Van Lines will handle the heavy lifting so you can focus on your new chapter — and route — ahead.
Imagine instead of rushing to your new home, you weave through majestic mountains, explore ancient forests and gaze at breathtaking canyons while waiting for your belongings to arrive. It’s a chance to bond with family, create lasting memories and truly experience the beauty of the United States.
Don’t just pack for your new home — pack a bag for the open road! Include essentials like comfortable hiking shoes, layers of clothing, a first-aid kit and plenty of snacks. Think about bringing a cooler for road trip picnics. And, of course, don’t forget your camera to capture those stunning landscapes.
Take time to enjoy the journey. Stop at scenic overlooks, stretch your legs on short hikes and stamp your “passport” at visitor centers. Engage with park rangers to learn about the park’s history and wildlife.

As you start the packing process, you’re probably foraging through “junk drawers,” kitchen cabinets, nightstands and other places where miscellaneous items tend to accumulate. Chances are, you’ve come across more than a few devices that have outlived their usefulness. And let’s not forget about that 28inch “non-smart” TV gathering dust in your garage.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), e-waste is the fastest growing part of the total waste stream in the U.S. And as the cycle of obsolescence grows ever shorter, this trend is almost bound to continue.
So, what’s worth holding onto — and how do you responsibly get rid of the rest? We’ll break the answer down into what we’ll call the “Four Ws.”
At some point virtually every piece of technology becomes obsolete. If a device is broken, worn out or isn’t generally used anymore (faxes, anyone?) it’s probably not worth keeping. For example, the cache of cellphones in your dresser covering three of four generations could be given a second life by donating to a worthy cause.
Basically, there are two different categories of devices, each with a different set of how-tos for recycling, selling or donating.
KEYBOARDS, WATCHES, HEADPHONES, MONITORS and any other gently used items that don’t contain personal information can go directly to a donation or recycling center. If you’re planning to sell them, make sure they’re still in working order.
LAPTOPS, TABLETS, CELLPHONES, DESKTOP COMPUTERS AND SIMILAR ELECTRONICS require additional steps to “wipe them clean” and maintain your privacy. One resource worth considering is the “Reconnect” initiative co-sponsored by Dell Technologies and Goodwill Industries. They delete all personal data and help your used — but still useful —items find a new home.
Electronics recycling has become increasingly accessible, allowing you to responsibly dispose of your unwanted gadgets. Here are the two most popular options:
LOCAL RECYCLING CENTERS: Many communities have dedicated electronics recycling centers equipped to handle various types of electronic waste. Check your local government’s website. Also, Earth911 offers a database of recycling resources, searchable by ZIP Code.
RETAILER/MANUFACTURER PROGRAMS: Retailers and electronics manufacturers typically have their own recycling initiatives, which include mailin services and/or drop-off locations. The Northwest Product Stewardship Council has a comprehensive list of programs
E-waste can contain harmful substances like lead, mercury and cadmium that can leach into soil and water. By recycling, you’ll prevent these toxins from contaminating ecosystems and harming wildlife. Precious metals like gold, silver and copper are also present in circuit boards and wiring. According to the EPA, recycling one million cell phones can recover 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold. Do something good for yourself, for others and for the environment. Remember, recycling benefits everyone.
Summer moves offer the allure of sunshine and longer days, but there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure it’s your best move yet.
For a seamless move when the temperature rises, use our non-allowable items checklist , which highlights items that simply can’t be shipped due to safety or regulatory reasons. As for preparing what can be moved, let’s look at some challenges of — and ways to beat — summer heat.
It’s not just melted chocolate and wilted plants you need to worry about. Extreme temperatures can have subtle but significant effects on a wide range of household goods. High heat can cause batteries to leak, electronics to malfunction and even artwork to fade or crack. But have no fear, proper planning and protection can minimize the risks.
Avoid packing items sensitive to extreme heat. And do consider investing in climate-controlled storage if your move involves a significant gap between packing and delivery.
Electronic devices are particularly vulnerable to heat. Before packing, back up all essential data and remove batteries. Wrap each item individually
Our movers will do their best to handle your belongings with care, even in the most challenging weather conditions. We’ll work with you to develop a customized moving plan that considers your needs, belongings and the warmer temperatures.
in protective materials like bubble wrap or packing blankets. Clearly label boxes containing electronics and avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or in a hot vehicle.
Certain delicate items require special attention during a summer move. Wrap art, antiques and heirlooms in acid-free paper and protective materials. Consider custom crating for particularly valuable or fragile pieces. If necessary, transport these items in a climate-controlled vehicle.
HUMAN FACTOR: STAYING SAFE IN THE SUMMER HEAT
Moving is strenuous work, especially in hot weather. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and wear lightweight, breathable clothing. Take frequent breaks in the shade and apply sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn.
Moving, at its core, is a narrative shift — a chapter break in your life’s story. And like any good story, it’s laced with valuable keepsakes, the tangible threads of your past. To ensure they’re covered in case of unforeseen events, it’s important to understand your protection options.
Our Full Value Protection is included in every move quote. It’s designed to address unexpected events during your move and is calculated by multiplying your shipment’s estimated weight by $6 per pound to provide a baseline level of protection.
Have valuables that go above and beyond? For items exceeding $100 per pound — think art, jewelry or high-end electronics — it’s essential to fill out a High Value Inventory form.
Note that you also can increase your valuation before loading, providing an extra layer of security for your most prized possessions, whatever they may be.
It’s important to know the difference between Full Value Protection and traditional moving insurance. While homeowners’ policies may offer some overlap, our plan is a direct reflection of our commitment to your belongings during transit. We recommend consulting your insurance provider for a comprehensive understanding of your coverage.
Ultimately, your move is your story. Talk openly with your move coordinator about your situation and these options so they can craft a protection plan that fits your needs. That way, you can move with confidence and peace of mind.
We offer a range of additional options to personalize the protection of your valuables.
PROTECTION: The minimum, legally mandated liability, which offers basic coverage at $0.60 per pound per article; while this lesser option is available, Full Value Protection is strongly recommended
CLAIMS ASSISTANCE: Support with claim forms and item repairs or replacements
PAIRS & SETS WAIVER: Protects the value of entire sets if one item is damaged
MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION WAIVER: Covers mechanical equipment that may malfunction because of transit
ACTS OF GOD WAIVER: Protects against natural disasters
ADDITIONAL DELAY PAYMENT: Compensation for delays
INCREASED DESTINATION WAIT TIME: Extended wait time at your destination
IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION: One year of identity theft protection
Whether you prefer a completely hands-off experience or enjoy a more active role in the packing process, United Van Lines provides a variety of services. If you want us to handle everything, our fullservice packing option is ideal. Alternatively, if you prefer to manage the packing yourself, we can provide all the necessary supplies. And for those who prefer a combination of both, we offer a flexible partial packing approach so you can customize your move.
If you opt to partially pack your belongings, you choose which items or rooms you want our experienced team to handle, while managing the rest yourself. This targeted approach allows you to allocate resources efficiently, focusing on valuable items, complex spaces or areas where you need extra help. Whatever you prefer, we can design a packing plan that aligns with your needs. Perhaps you’re comfortable packing your clothing and books but prefer our professionals to handle your fragile items. Or maybe you’re short on time and need assistance packing your entire home, except for a few personal heirlooms. It’s your move — we’re just here to make it happen. Be sure to discuss your preferences and needs with your move coordinator, your pointperson who can offer advice and will guide you through move milestones.

At United, we’ve been tracking migration patterns state-by-state since 1977. Our annual survey of household moves handled by our parent company, UniGroup, has long been considered an industry benchmark for measuring America’s migration trends and the reasons behind them. Here’s what we found...
According to the results of our 48th Annual National Movers Study, West Virginia had the highest percentage of inbound moves (66%), jumping nine spots compared to the 2023 survey results. Top motivations for moving to the state include wanting to be closer to family (35%) and a new job/company transfer (31%). In line with this pattern, several states, including North Carolina (60%) and Arkansas (58%), continue to increase in popularity, particularly among first-time homeowners and retirees.
Perennial favorites — South Carolina, Alabama and Rhode Island — have been included among the study’s top inbound states for the past five years. Joining them on the top 10 inbound list for the first time are Delaware, moving into second place (from 11th in 2023); Oregon, now in eighth place (up from 12th); and Arizona, now the 10th most moved-to state (up from 18th). Not surprisingly, all the above share an abundance of outdoor activities, less densely populated towns and cities, a relatively slow pace of life.
Based on the inbound and outbound percentages of total moves in the lower 48 and Washington, D.C., the United 2024 National Movers Study reveals that, for the first time in decades, the primary motivator for an interstate move was to be closer to family (28%). Right behind this are a new job or company transfer (25.4%) and a desire to live in less densely populated, affordable regions with a more “livable” lifestyle (9.8%).
Our study consultant and subject matter expert Michael A. Stoll, Economist and Professor in The Department of Public Policy at UCLA, points out that many movers are splitting the difference between the advantages of small-town life and access to big-city amenities. “As housing costs continue to rise,” he notes, “Americans are moving to lower density, more affordable regions between expensive, economic-driving states. Delaware is moving up as an interesting spot for retirees, providing affordability but in close proximity to cities like Philadelphia and D.C.”
Our 2024 study revealed that, for the seventh consecutive year, more residents moved out of New Jersey (67%) than any other state. The top reasons include retirement (22%) and being closer to loved ones (20%). Interestingly, 40% of New Jersey movers aged 65 and older resettled in Florida.
Because of their comparatively higher costs of living and climbing housing prices, it’s no surprise that several states located in the Northeast — as well as the state of California — saw a considerable number of outbound moves. Cost-of-living and job-related concerns also factor into a notable trend of outbound moves happening in Illinois (60%) and Nebraska (56%), respectively. And although its cost of living is low, Mississippi was another highly outbound state, possibly due to a relatively weak job market and limited longterm career prospects.
People move for all kinds of reasons. It’s our job to get your belongings to your new home as smoothly and seamlessly as possible — no matter why. And as always, we’re here to help!
CLUELESS IN CLEVELAND
Dear Clueless,
Planning a move can be daunting, especially if you’re prone to procrastinating. But keep this in mind: The longer you wait, the fewer choices you’ll have in terms of timing and even pricing. My advice? Take a deep breath and seize the day!
Peak season — from mid-May to early September — is when most moves happen. That’s why we urge customers to get their move date locked in eight or more weeks in advance. Once the date’s been set, the details can be thoroughly planned out and completely manageable.
Start by researching reputable movers that have the services you want. Make sure they have positive reviews from trusted sources like the Better Business Bureau and ask your neighbors, too. One of the biggest factors impacting cost is weight so think about which items you’ll take and which you’ll want to sell, donate or get rid of. Also be sure to check out the Navigating Peak Season edition of House Key for tons of helpful peak season moving tips and info.

When Virginia B., a writer, and her partner Kellen, a school principal, relocated from Columbus, Ohio, to Little Rock, Arkansas, his new school provided a lump sum cash amount intended to cover the bulk of the moving costs. Even with the money in hand, there were still some anxious moments. “There’s a gravity associated with any lump sum, whether you’re paying it or
receiving it,” notes Virginia. “We were grateful for the financial assistance for the multi-state move and we wanted to use the funds as strategically as we could.”
As a moving company that handles lump sum moves routinely — including Virginia’s — United Van Lines understands her point of view. While it can be a great way to offset the costs of relocation,
“Resist the temptation to simply go with the cheapest quote.”
there’s more to a lump sum move than just cashing a check. If you’re receiving a lump sum from your employer, here are some timely tips for making the most of it.
Resist the temptation to simply go with the cheapest quote. Google and Yelp reviews are good places to start researching potential movers — and recommendations from your neighbors can be helpful, too. Finally, visit the Better Business Bureau website for information about any moving company or broker you’re considering.
TAXES: Aside from a few exceptions for military personnel, moves — lump sum or otherwise — are usually considered income by the IRS and will be taxed accordingly. Some employers will “gross up” the lump sum they’re offering to cover what will ultimately be claimed by taxes. Check whether your employer does (or is willing to do) this. Whatever the case, at least you’ll be prepared.
WHAT’S ACTUALLY INCLUDED: Know upfront whether the lump sum you’re being given is intended to cover everything related to your upcoming move. In addition to the move itself, some companies will also cover miscellaneous expenses for househunting trips, temporary housing, and hotel and travel expenses.
If your move is small and relatively simple — and your belongings consist of just clothing, basic kitchen items and a few pieces of furniture — using the lump sum to rent a truck and move yourself might be a viable option. However, if you’re moving a full household of possessions cross country — or have delicate or bulky items like major appliances, mattresses and electronics — a DIY move may be more than you want to take on.
Make an impartial assessment of what needs to be moved, where you’re headed and how you plan to coordinate all the large and small details. As Virginia notes, “If we had to do it again, we would have been a lot more selective about what we chose to move and used the remainder of the lump sum to purchase items that worked well in our new home.”
No matter what, do yourself a favor and get a move estimate from United. It costs nothing and can potentially save you some heartaches, headaches — and backaches. Happy moving!
* Note: We are not tax experts; however, we recommend you consider obtaining additional information from legal and/or financial advisers who are fully aware of your individual circumstances.
Often a quote from a mover or broker won’t cover certain hidden costs.
THIRD-PARTY SERVICES: If you need your appliances unhooked, a TV dismounted from your wall or a piece of special artwork specially padded and crated, it will almost always cost extra.
STORAGE: If you require temporary storage for your belongings, let your mover know as soon as possible so they can include this in your move quote.
SHUTTLE SERVICE: Sometimes, a full-size moving truck may not be able to navigate the twists and turns to a home or apartment. There may be an added charge for a smaller shuttle to pick up your belongings and transfer them onto a full-size van.
VALUATION: Whether you opt for moving insurance or a service like United’s Full Value Protection, it’s important to have coverage in case your belongings are lost or damaged. To make a quote seem more attractive, some movers and brokers just go with the legally required minimum coverage of $0.60 per pound. If you do the math, it’s easy to see how this will be less-than-adequate to repair or replace your most treasured possessions.
Perhaps you’ve seen our new ad running on YouTube or one of the many other places it’s now appearing. It’s a fun 30 seconds, but there’s much more to our new spot than a few chuckles. In fact, a whole lot of planning strategy, prep and thinking went into every second on the screen.
We take the moving experience very seriously. And although the approach we decided upon is decidedly lighthearted, it drives home a few very important underlying messages.
As we all know, moving has changed a lot, especially as people’s need for choice, flexibility, and custom-tailored services and solutions are top-ofmind. Our research found that a lot of consumers, particularly younger ones, think full-service interstate movers like United are for large households with a lot of hard-to-move and delicate possessions. In reality, United Van Lines handles moves of all sizes and distances. Enter our new tagline “Big Moves. Small Moves. All Moves.”
Another point we aimed to convey is that many people often underestimate all the details and planning involved in any move — even ones that appear simple. In our commercial, a hapless customer is caught in the unenviable position of hiring the wrong team and suffered the consequences. The takeaway? Hire a team of inexperienced helpers and hope for the best. Or get your move done right by hiring United, which offers you a simple, straightforward booking and quote process, the support of your own assigned move coordinator, the latest technology, and a dedicated, experienced crew.
United’s marketing team found the ideal creative partner, an ad agency with the experience and inspired thinking to bring our ideas to life. We then
gathered together for a brainstorming session, before settling on the concept. Within a short time, a script was developed, actors were hired, the set was decorated, and the director and crew turned ideas into magic.
Where is the new spot running? For starters, you can check it out on United’s YouTube channel. You can also catch it on streaming services, where it plays just like commercials you see on broadcast and cable TV. And if you’re in the process of choosing a mover, you may find smaller ads and short videos based on the 30-second spot appearing on your social media and real estate channels.
Wherever you find our new ad, we hope you’ll enjoy what you see — and the words of wisdom, too.
Leave the old moving headaches at the old address.
America’s #1 Mover® wants to put a smile on your face with easy booking, top-notch professional drivers, Full Value Protection for your belongings and even your own dedicated move coordinator. Go with the pros at United and make your next move the best one yet.
