ASK THE EXPERT

I’m planning to move this summer but can’t seem to get motivated. Now I’m worried I may have waited too long. What should I do?

Sonia K., Subject Matter Expert for Mayflower, replies:

If you’re looking for something to spur you into action, keep in mind the earlier you lock in a move quote, the better chance you have of getting the time and date that’s best for you.

Peak Season — roughly mid-May to early September — is the busiest time for most movers, Mayflower included. We suggest scheduling at least eight weeks out from your preferred date. If possible, request a morning start when everyone, your movers included, is fresh. This can also help avoid delays resulting from earlier jobs. And since peak moving season incurs the highest rates, one way to save money is to reduce the number of items you move. It’s a perfect time to donate items to a shelter, secondhand shop or food pantry.

Pro Tip: The Peak Season Primer edition of Welcome Home is a great source for move-related ideas and information.

Time to Beat the Heat

Summer is a popular time for moving, but the rising temperatures can present unique challenges when it comes to transporting your belongings. Protecting your possessions from the heat is key for a successful warm weather move. But don’t sweat it — Mayflower is here to help.

PROTECTING YOUR ELECTRONICS

Electronics are especially susceptible to heat damage. Before packing, back up all important data and remove batteries from devices. Wrap electronics in protective materials — such as bubble wrap or packing blankets — and store them in clearly labeled boxes.

ARTWORK AND HEIRLOOMS

Fine art, photographs and delicate heirlooms require special care during a summer move. Wrap these items in acid-free paper and protective materials. Consider custom crating for particularly valuable or fragile pieces. If necessary, transport these items in a climate-controlled vehicle.

Our movers will do their best to handle your belongings with care, even in the hottest weather. We’ll work with you to create a customized moving plan that takes into account the specific needs of your items and the weather conditions, while minimizing their exposure to the heat. Want more tips on moving during warm weather? We have you covered on our blog

STAYING HYDRATED AND COOL

Moving is a physically demanding task, especially in hot weather. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade. Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

PACKING WITH HEAT IN MIND

Smart packing is your first line of defense against the summer heat. The moving trailer will be a similar environment to an uninsulated attic, so avoid packing items that are particularly vulnerable to heat. And do consider using climate-controlled storage for particularly sensitive items if your move involves the need for storage between packing and delivery.

THINK BEYOND THE OBVIOUS

While it’s common knowledge candles and chocolate melt in extreme heat (as noted in our list of restricted items), the impact of heat extends beyond the norm.

Navigating Your First Big Move with Confidence

Moving for the first time can feel like stepping into uncharted territory. From the initial excitement to the steps involved, the process is filled with new experiences and a seemingly endless to-do list. But with careful planning and the right resources, your first move can be a smooth and even enjoyable transition.

With decades of experience, Mayflower offers a wealth of guidance to help first-time movers navigate every step of the journey, turning potential overwhelm into confident action.

CHOOSING YOUR MOVING PARTNER

One of the most crucial decisions is selecting a reputable moving company. Choose a moving company known for its transparency, reliability and ability to tailor your move to your specific needs and budget. Before deciding, get multiple quotes, compare services and read reviews. Additionally, be sure to ask about the claims process and valuation options to protect your belongings during the move.

Not only does Mayflower provide transparent pricing and detailed information on our services — from full-service packing and loading to transportation and unpacking — we also provide a move coordinator to guide and help keep you on track.

PACKING LIKE A PRO

Packing is often the most daunting task for first-time movers. Our expert packing tips make the process more manageable. Our best advice? Start early, declutter ruthlessly and invest in quality packing supplies. Label every box clearly, indicating its contents and the room it belongs in. Need advice? Our blog features tips and videos on packing fragile items and creating a moving inventory to keep track of your belongings. Another tip: Consider packing a “first night box” with everything you’ll need upon arrival in your new home, from toiletries and medications to a change of clothes and phone chargers.

The First Night Box

When properly packed, a “first night” box can be your best friend during those initial chaotic hours (or days!) in your new home. Pack it with essentials you’ll need at once, preventing a frantic search through countless boxes.

TOILETRIES

Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and toilet paper

MEDICATIONS

Any prescription medications you need, plus pain relievers and any over-the-counter essentials

CLOTHING

A change of clothes for everyone in the family, including pajamas

SNACKS AND DRINKS

Non-perishable snacks and bottled water to tide you over until you can get to the grocery store

PHONE CHARGERS

Don’t get caught with dead electronics you’ll need to use

FIRST-AID KIT

Band-aids, antiseptic wipes and any other basic first-aid supplies

TOOLS

A small toolkit with a hammer, screwdrivers and utility knife for assembling furniture or opening boxes

PET SUPPLIES

Food, water bowls, leashes and other essentials for your furry friends

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Copies of essential documents — such as your lease or home purchase agreement, insurance information and moving paperwork

THE BIG DAY AND BEYOND

On moving day, ensure you have clear communication with the moving crew. Be available to answer questions and provide guidance. Our comprehensive moving checklist can help you stay organized and ensure a smooth loading process. After the movers leave do a final walk-through of your old home to ensure everything is in order.

SETTLING INTO YOUR NEW NEST

Arriving at your new home is just the beginning. Here are some tips for setting up your new home quickly and efficiently.

Start unpacking room by room, starting with necessities. Refer to your labeled boxes and inventory list to easily find items. Don’t forget to update your address with the post office, banks and other important institutions.

Additionally, our city and state guides can help you get to know your new surroundings, discover local amenities and begin to build new connections in your community.

Five Tips for Recycling Electronics

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , “e-waste” is the fastest growing part of the total waste stream in the U.S. And chances are you’re seeing evidence of this in drawers, cupboards, nightstands and closets throughout your home. How do you responsibly dispose of your growing accumulation of unused electronic devices? Let’s explore the options.

LOCAL RECYCLING CENTERS

Many communities offer dedicated electronics recycling facilities that accept a wide range of devices, from old cell phones to outdated computer monitors. Check your local government’s website or contact your waste management department to find nearby drop-off locations. You can also visit Earth911 for a searchable database of recycling resources in your local area.

RETAIL STORE PROGRAMS

Several major retailers have established electronics recycling programs, many of which include mail-in services and/or drop-off locations. Stores like Best Buy, Staples, and Apple often accept old devices for recycling, sometimes for store credit. For more details, check out the list of participating manufacturers and retailers maintained by The Northwest Product Stewardship Council.

DONATIONS

Most smaller electronic devices have a relatively small window of desirability in the donations market — especially since they’re usually difficult to try out onsite. If you have items such as laptops or printers, it may be possible to donate them to an organization such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. In addition, many resources, including Computers with Causes, will take computers, servers, tablets and other items for repurposing.

SELLING ONLINE

If you’re looking to earn some extra cash, another option is selling your used electronics on an online auction site such as Ebay, Bonanza or Facebook Marketplace. This will take a bit more work as far as organizing and describing your items, as well as deciding upon a competitive sales price. And you don’t want to be in the position of having to take items to your new home and then ship them out. Still, these sites may be ideal if you’re selling older electronics (such as console stereos, record turntables, pre-transistor radios and even portable cassette players) that have developed their own niche market of collectors.

A FINAL WORD — SECURITY

As you consider recycling your old electronics, remember items containing personal or confidential information need extra attention. Check whether an electronics or retailer in your area can help with tasks such as “wiping” your computer’s hard drive or deleting stored numbers and other information from your cell phones. One resource worth exploring is the Reconnect initiative co-sponsored by Dell Technologies and Goodwill Industries. They will delete all personal data and help your used—but still useful — items find a new home.

Mayflower’s Protection Options

Moving is a journey. And like any journey, it’s best to be prepared. After all, your belongings aren’t just items; they’re the story of your life. With that in mind, let’s explore our protection options, designed to give you peace of mind throughout your move.

FULL VALUE PROTECTION: OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

Our basic Full Value Protection is included in every initial quote. It’s designed to address unexpected events during your move. We aim to repair damaged items and replace those that are irreparable or lost, up to a declared value.

HOW FULL VALUE PROTECTION WORKS

The standard valuation is calculated by multiplying your shipment’s estimated weight by $6 per pound. For example, a 6,800-pound shipment would have a valuation of $40,800.

High Value Inventory Form: This form is crucial. It’s where you list items valued at $100 or more per pound, such as artwork, jewelry or high-end electronics; declaring these items ensures they’re properly covered.

Increased Valuation: You can increase your valuation amount at any time before we begin loading, providing added protection for your valuable possessions.

FULL VALUE PROTECTION VERSUS MOVING INSURANCE

It’s important to clarify our Full Value Protection is not insurance. While homeowners’ policies may offer some coverage, insurance policies differ significantly. Our plan reflects our direct responsibility for your belongings during the move. We encourage you to discuss insurance coverage directly with your insurance provider.

Because every move is unique, it’s important to understand your options so you can make informed decisions. We encourage you to discuss your needs and concerns with your move coordinator. That way you’re sure to select the best protection for your specific needs. With Full Value Protection — which even includes assistance with claim forms and item repairs or replacements — you can move forward with confidence, knowing your belongings have an extra layer of protection.

Want to take a deeper diver into our coverage options? Check out our blog.

Additional Protection Options

We offer several additional options to tailor your protection to the items you plan to move.

MINIMUM LIABILITY VALUATION : This is the legally required minimum ($0.60 per pound per article or the equivalent of $1.80 for a three-pound gaming device); while it’s available, we strongly recommend Full Value Protection for adequate coverage

CONVENIENCE SERVICE PACKAGES :

These packages offer various waivers and enhancements, including:

PAIRS & SETS WAIVER:

Protects the value of an entire set if one item is damaged

MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION

WAIVER: Covers mechanical equipment that may malfunction because of transit

ACTS OF GOD WAIVER: Protects against loss or damage due to natural disasters

ADDITIONAL DELAY PAYMENT:

Provides increased compensation for delays

INCREASED DESTINATION

WAIT TIME: Extends the movers’ wait time at your destination in case you are not available when they arrive

IDENTITY THEFT PROTECTION:

Adds a year of identity theft protection

Lump Sum Moves

Lump sum moves — where an employer provides a set amount of money to an employee for relocation purposes — are becoming increasingly popular. While it’s a simple way to provide employees with upfront assistance for relocation, there’s more involved in a lump sum move than cashing a check.

For the real inside scoop on the pros and pitfalls of a lump sum move, we recently sat down with Bucky, a representative from a Mayflower Agency in our mid-Atlantic region. He offered us some timely advice about how to make the most of a lump sum move package as well as some potential red flags employees on the move need to know.

Q: WHAT ARE HIDDEN EXPENSES CUSTOMERS MIGHT NOT KNOW?

Bucky: Whether it’s insurance or a service like Mayflower’s Full Value Protection, it’s important to have some type of coverage in case of loss or damage. There can also be extra costs for third-party services. For instance, if you need your appliances unhooked, a TV dismounted from your wall or a piece of special artwork specially padded and crated, it almost always costs extra.

Where your home is located can factor in as well. If you live in a place like New York City, it’s almost impossible for a full-size moving truck to pull right up to a building. Many movers will put in an added charge for a smaller shuttle to pick up your belongings before transferring them onto a full-size van.

Last, but not least, is storage. At Mayflower, we always ask people if there’s a possibility that they’ll need storage so we can quote that up front.

Q: WHAT DO CUSTOMERS MOST OFTEN FORGET TO ASK THEIR EMPLOYER ABOUT?

Bucky: Many people neglect to ask whether the lump sum amount is “free and clear.” For example, aside from a few exceptions for military personnel, if you get a lump sum from your company, it’s considered income by the IRS. In the end, the amount you’re given often winds up being much less than what you can use.

Something else people forget to ask about is if the lump sum is intended to cover everything. Some companies will provide money for the move and cover miscellaneous costs for things like house-hunting trips, temporary housing and storage, hotels and travel expenses. It’s better to ask and budget accordingly.

Note: We are not tax experts; however, we recommend that you consider obtaining additional information from legal and/or financial advisers who are fully aware of your individual circumstances.

Live Like a Local from Day One

Moving is more than just changing addresses; it’s about embracing a new beginning and a new neck of the woods. With Mayflower’s city and state guides, you’ll be ready to explore and embrace a new community.

Think of our guides as your personal passport to local living. We’ve curated insider tips and hidden gems to help you skip what’s ho-hum and instead dive straight into the heart of your new neighborhood.

Want to know where the locals grab their morning coffee? We’ve got you covered. Seeking out the best spot for live music on a Friday night? Look no further. Our guides highlight the authentic experiences that make each city unique.

EXPLORE GUIDES

Q: WHY NOT JUST MOVE YOURSELF AND POCKET THE MONEY?

Bucky: DIY may be a good route to go if your belongings consist of just a bed and a couple pieces of furniture. But if you’re moving a full household crosscountry or have lots of specialized stuff like appliances and electronics, that’s a different level of complexity. We find people in these circumstances regret the decision to move themselves, especially if they don’t know how to properly pack and items break in transit.

Q: WHAT DO CUSTOMERS MOST OFTEN FORGET TO RESEARCH?

Bucky: Let me start by saying Google and Yelp reviews are a pretty good resource as far as determining the track record of a moving company or a broker. Any reputable business will closely monitor what’s being said about them and use it to improve their services. What should people be researching? For one thing, the going market rate for the cost of a move to and from their area. Depending on where they live and where they’re moving, this can fluctuate quite a bit. They also need to spend some time learning how to read an estimate. I think a lot of people see a price and think, “Hey, a move’s a move. This one’s cheaper than this one ... sold!”

Q: WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR A CUSTOMER WHO’S BEEN GIVEN A LUMP SUM MOVING PACKAGE?

Bucky: The more you know, the better your move will be. Don’t just go on Google and pick the cheapest mover. Do your research. Definitely ask whether the company you’re speaking to is a traditional, assetbased mover like Mayflower or a broker. (By the way, they have to legally tell you if they’re a broker.)

If you’re planning a move, it’s always good to have quotes or estimates in hand before deciding. Why not get a no-obligation quote from your local Mayflower agent today?

Craft Your Perfect Move with Flexible Packing Solutions

Moving is a deeply personal experience. Given there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to packing, we offer a range of flexible options so you can create the perfect move for your needs, ability and comfort level.

THE SPECTRUM OF CHOICES

Whether you prefer to hand over the reins entirely or enjoy a more hands-on approach, Mayflower offers a range of packing services to suit your preferences. Our full-service packing option provides complete peace of mind, with our skilled professionals packing every item in your home. However, if you’re a meticulous organizer and prefer to handle everything yourself, we can simply provide the necessary packing supplies. Of course, for many, the ideal solution lies somewhere in between.

PARTIAL PACKING

Mayflower’s partial packing services offer the ultimate flexibility. You choose which items or areas you’d like our professionals to handle and which you prefer to manage yourself. This targeted approach allows you to focus your budget where it matters most, whether it’s protecting delicate heirlooms, efficiently packing a complex home office or simply tackling the most daunting rooms like the kitchen.

DESIGNING YOUR IDEAL PACKING PLAN

The true beauty of Mayflower’s approach lies in its customizability. We can tailor a packing plan that perfectly reflects your individual circumstances. Perhaps you’re comfortable packing your clothes and books, but you’d prefer our experts to handle your fragile china and artwork. Or maybe you’re short on time and need help packing your entire home, except for a few personal items you wish to pack yourself. The possibilities are endless.

What Type of Packer Are You?

THE ART COLLECTOR

You have a valuable collection of paintings and sculptures. Art crating specialists pack and crate these pieces, ensuring their safe transport.

THE TECHSAVVY FAMILY

You have a complex home entertainment system and many electronic devices. Professionals disconnect and pack these items, protecting them from damage during the move.

THE BUSY PARENT

You’re juggling work, family and the stresses of moving. You opt for Mayflower to pack your entire kitchen and dining room, areas you find particularly overwhelming, while you tackle the simpler tasks.

THE MINIMALIST MOVER

You’re moving to a smaller space and downsizing significantly. You pack most of your belongings yourself but hire Mayflower to protect and transport your larger furniture items, simplifying your move’s planning.

A Moving Approach to Moving

Our new Mayflower commercial mixes emotions with facts

If the little girl unboxing her teddy bear doesn’t make you sniffle a bit, the couple dancing to a nostalgic record just might make you smile in recognition. The new Mayflower commercial is definitely intended to tug a bit at the heartstrings. However, its underlying message — that the moving experience is a series of events requiring careful coordination, planning and teamwork — still comes through, loud and clear.

TAPPING INTO THE RESEARCH

We know moving isn’t always a warm and fuzzy experience, so our new spot was carefully crafted to show the practical benefits of moving with Mayflower. There was plenty of planning, strategy, prep and thinking behind every second you see on the screen.

For example, our research found a lot of consumers, particularly younger ones, think full-service interstate movers like Mayflower are mostly for large, established households. We countered that misconception by showcasing a cross-section of individuals and families at different stages in the lives — “From first steps to fresh starts … starter homes to more practical homes. We’ve been there for it all.” It’s a subtle way of saying

that a Mayflower move is really for everyone, regardless of the size or distance of their move.

The other point we wanted to emphasize is that Mayflower is a trusted mover consumers can count on. The montage of movers doing their jobs smoothly and efficiently in the background is driven home by the message that, “We’ll always have your back,” followed by our re-energized tagline, Every moment. Every move. Every Step of the Way®.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!

So how did we turn our overall strategy into a plan of action? First, Mayflower’s marketing team found the ideal agency partner to bring our strategy to life. We then sat down with them for an intense, daylong brainstorming session — and ultimately settled on the soft-sell approach. Within a short time, a script was developed, actors were hired, the set was dressed, and the director and crew turned the ideas on paper into reality. We think it was well worth the time and effort.

WHERE YOU CAN SEE IT

For starters, you can check it out here on YouTube. You can also catch it on streaming services where they play just like commercials you see on broadcast and cable. And if you’re in the process of choosing a mover, you may find smaller ads and short videos based on the 30-second spot appearing in your social media and real estate channels.

Wherever you happen to see it, we hope you take our commercial’s message to heart: That we’re a mover who’ll take good care of you throughout your move journey.

MANAGING LIFE’S MOVES

Have you ever felt like life’s a series of boxes — packed, unpacked and repacked again? You’re in good company. From your first apartment to your forever home, moving is a constant companion on life’s journey. But here’s the thing: Each move is as unique as the chapter you’re starting. So, let’s unpack the art of moving at every life stage.

THE FIRST STEPS OF INDEPENDENCE

As you take those first steps into adulthood, your first move might be into a tiny apartment or shared living space. It’s an exciting time filled with possibilities, but it can also be overwhelming. Remember, it’s okay to start small — your space will grow along with your experiences.

BUILDING A LIFE TOGETHER

When love leads to cohabitation or marriage, combining two lives under one roof is both thrilling and challenging. This move often involves merging furniture, negotiating space and creating a home that reflects both personalities. It’s a dance of compromise and creativity.

EXPANDING HORIZONS

As your family grows, so do your space needs. Moving to accommodate little ones is about more than just extra bedrooms — it’s about finding a neighborhood with good schools, safe play areas and a community that aligns with your values.

DOWNSIZING WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT

When you’ve accumulated a life’s worth of belongings but find yourself living as an empty nester, a move can be the perfect time to reevaluate what you own and rethink where you want to spend the next chapter in life.
