Eindhoven sparkles with events, festivals, exhibitions and stories. H wonderful it is to re-discover the city now, when the days seem endless and the evenings call for outdoor films, live music and unexpected encounters. From the moving Muziek Maatjes to the grand Brabantsedag in this summer edition of Eindless you see how culture continues to connect people.
Cabaret artist Jules Keeris shows how personal stories become universal; chef Erling Rugsten follows the adventure and connects worlds and flavours at the table. In Burst your Bubble Aneke van Ravesteijn shares how encounters begin when you let go of expectations, and this time you can read Mathilde solo. Where we hoped for a regular duo column with Loubna, their perspectives turned out to be so far apart and the deadlines so tight that it is still unclear which conversation and which text form is desirable and feasible. Real dialogue requires you
to really show yourself, to show vulnerability. It not only takes time, but also the courage to admit that you don’t yet know where you want to end up together.
The agenda for July and August is full of tips, as is the page Made in Eindhoven that tips you on the products through which you can celebrate the joys of life. In short, Eindless brings you new hotspots, summer festivals, cultural tips and people you don’t yet know. Extra important, because the city is changing faster than ever and we need platforms that show what’s going on, what you can experience and who belongs. Culture is not a side issue. It is the glue that holds a city together.
Stay on. Go out. The city is waiting.

‘Enrique and I went to a Tattoo Convention in Eindhoven. I work for an international tattoo supplier and sell products and supplies for tattoo artists. This is my first time in this city and I am already completely sold. What a great place! We had a delicious meal and walked around the city centre. This is my boyfriend’s sixth time here. He also knows the parties, museums and parks well and shows me the best spots. I love the atmosphere herethe people are friendly, the food is fantastic, and the city feels lively and fun. We stayed at the Leonardo Hotel, a nice centrally located place. After this trip we are going to relax at home and then go back to work. In Madrid you can often find us in the park at the weekends. Life happens out there, and that’s what makes it so much fun.’

Leeftijd 22 & 21 • Nationality Argentinian & Danish
‘I have been studying Architecture and Urbanism at the TU/e in Eindhoven for four years and work part-time in a sports centre café. I already speak a little Dutch; I understand a lot, but speaking remains difficult. Still, I would like to learn it. What I like is that no one forces you. Integrating feels natural here. The atmosphere is good, partly due to the many internationals from the TU/e and the Design Academy. There is real interaction, no one-way traffic. That makes it easier to feel at home. Eindhoven has become nicer in recent years. Although the city did not always have the best reputation, I really see improvement. There are more festivals, markets and events. You can feel the energy of the new generation everywhere. I will soon start my master’s degree at the TU Delft and hope to find a room there. This week we spontaneously travelled to Fez, Morocco. We were also going to Chefchaouen but unfortunately became ill. We’ve known each other for fourteen years,’ says Louisa. ‘We went to an international school together in Beijing, where we lived as expat children. Our parents worked in different countries. Now I study in Maastricht, and we meet regularly to chill and sometimes to travel together.’
Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.
Telling the incredible life story of chef Erling would require an entire issue of Eindless. For years, he has delighted us in Eindhoven with his culinary creations, including collaborations, catering services, and pop-up restaurants. Over the last two years, he has chosen to manage a restaurant permanently by collaborating with Piet Hein Eek. After the bankruptcy of his previous restaurant during the coronavirus pandemic, the designer was seeking new energy, and he oversaw the entire catering operation at his magnificent creative laboratory in Strijp R. In a fast-growing, vibrant city like Eindhoven, the hospitality sector continually evolves, with chefs coming and going, and some returning.
His ethics remain in place, offering menus that use as many local raw materials as possible within a 45-kilometer radius. There is no shortage of producers of excellent raw materials, including vegetables, cheeses, and meats. The important thing is knowing how to elevate them to the maximum, where collaboration with suppliers is essential, because behind every dish lies a story to tell.
You are an almost legendary character. Few know your true origins. Please, share your background with us.
I was born in Tsumeb, Namibia. My parents are entrepreneurs, and at that time, they owned a cattle farm in southern Angola. I was born in the bush, which might sound exotic, but the reality was living in a tent with outdoor toilets and no running water. When I was one year old, the civil war broke out, and we had to flee, leave everything behind us, and we lost everything. My father is Swedish, and my mother is South African. I feel my roots are based there, in Africa.
Where did you end up then?
From there, we traveled to Kenya, where my father launched another business in the flower industry. I remember being the white kid with blond hair living in Mombasa, eating mangoes from the trees, and enjoying a fantastic childhood. Around the age of six, I visited Denmark, the first time I wore shoes. It felt strange! I’ve always been very curious and open, eager to talk with people, and I’ve always integrated easily with the locals. To be honest, it remains my greatest asset. My parents were looking for land and wanted to settle in Europe, so they found a place in the Pyrenees in France. I lived there for over three years and started attending school for the first time with my brother. It was one of the best moments of my childhood, and I began speaking French fluently. I adapted quickly there, too, but the story continues elsewhere. Around 1982, my parents decided to return to central Africa to start a business with the Jojoba plant, but the company failed there. During my adventure, I also risked dying when I was stranded in the desert for three days without water. Luckily, a Tuareg tribe saved us, sharing their food and water with complete strangers. Eventually, as a teenager, I returned to Sweden, where I struggled to resume my studies, and I took on a summer job in a French kitchen.
‘I’m always searching for those that reflect not just where I am, but what this moment tastes like’
And this changed your life?
Not being French in a French kitchen wasn’t easy. It was tough. It set the tone for the next part of my life, so I convinced my mom to keep working there: The Kitchen was physical, pragmatic, and energetic. That worked for me. I enjoyed collaborating with a team, sharing responsibilities, and staying organized. I had many experiences, even in starred restaurants. I continued to learn and pursue my education. At this point, I ended up in England, where I stopped cooking and took on the role of general manager. There, I reached the pinnacle of my career, but I worked hard and sacrificed much of my personal life. I had to stop, take a step back. My heart was broken.
Then you end up in Eindhoven..
Yes, and for love, 10 years ago. Initially, I found the city modern, and at the beginning, it wasn’t easy to pinpoint its soul. With its distinctive modern architecture, characterized by enormous blocks, it initially feels both strange and unique, yet contemporary. Gradually, I started to grasp its remarkable potential in its incredible melting pot: I think the heart of Eindhoven is the people who live here. That’s what makes it special. Then I started to feel this unique vibe, energy, and magic.
Here you went back to the stoves.
Initially at Ketelhuis, I embarked on even more exciting adventures, including a residency as a chef at Singularity University. During that time, I aimed to show that you can achieve your goals independently, even on a limited budget, by utilizing seasonal products from local suppliers and drawing inspiration from their stories. This interest continues to thrive, also with the two-year collaboration for the restaurants at Piet Hein Eek. It is essential to collaborate with local producers, share their stories, and elevate their work. Each dish is a dialogue between us—structured yet spontaneous, refined yet full of emotion, especially during my pop-up nights called Farms to Table. This collaboration is what brings the kitchen to life, and what we serve is more than a meal. It is a shared creation shaped by our partnership, the ingredients we select, and the passion of the local suppliers who help bring our vision to fruition.
What does it mean for you to work, live, and cook between worlds?
It is at the heart of how I approach food. Ingredients carry memory - and I’m always searching for those that reflect not just where I am, but what this moment tastes like. I believe food has a true identity, and that identity begins within. We might only physically stand in one place, but every dish carries a trace of where we’ve been.
And now, what do you want to achieve?
I am directing my energies toward creating experiences, not just dinners: mindful events that connect people and unforgettable moments to share at the table.

The final chords of the festive closing ceremony in the Parktheater are still echoing, when a new question arises: what if we bring this form of meaningful encounter more broadly into the city and use culture structurally as a social bridge?
The power of unexpected encounters
It is the simplicity that makes it powerful: a weekly meeting between a student and an elderly person, with music as a connecting factor. They chat, sing, listen to each other’s favourite songs and, above all, listen to each other. Muziek Maatjes does not achieve its success from large-scale events or spectacular productions, and it goes much further than just ‘offering distraction or entertainment to elderly people’. Sharing memories, being seen for who they are and were; that is what it is all about for the elderly and for the generations of younger participants, the value is also enormous.
Project Leader Marion Peters of Club Goud puts it aptly: ‘The most delightful conversations arise when expectations disappear.’ For the Social Work students at Summa, Muziek Maatjes opens up a world where life experience cannot be expressed in credits.
A city that invites itself
Eindhoven is known as a city of creators and doers, of innovation and technology. But also, as a city in which social connection, certainly between generations and different worlds, is sometimes less self-evident. With its social programmes, including Muziek Maatjes, Parktheater Eindhoven shows that culture can be more than just a night out. Culture is then a means to remove barriers between people and explore new forms of community. Sustainable and as a structural fabric in the city.
From pilot to city-wide programme
It is already clear that the concept of Music Buddies can be expanded. The first pilots with people with intellectual disabilities are promising, and the ambition to expand has been expressed. In this way, music, or more
What happens when a 17-year-old student and an 82-year-old fellow citizen listen to music together, eat sandwiches and talk about life? That question is no longer hypothetical in Eindhoven. Thanks to Music Buddy (Muziek Maatjes), a project by Club Goud in collaboration with Summa College, Wooninc, Lunet and Parktheater Eindhoven, dozens of special encounters have taken place in recent months between generations that otherwise rarely meet.
broadly culture, can form the basis for a city-wide programme in which schools, care organizations, cultural institutions and neighbourhood initiatives organize new encounters together. Think of performances in which neighbours share the stage together, workshops in which young and old produce beats together or learn to dance, story evenings in which city residents share their life stories. Eindhoven has space, creativity and need.
Inclusive meeting as the norm
What Muziek Maatjes also shows is how inclusive meeting can be if you just adapt the form. For example, this year a deaf student participated in the project, who together with her buddy invented a completely unique interpretation of the musical theme. Examples like these reinforce the idea that culture should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background or ability. In a time in which polarization and aging reinforce each other, there is a need for initiatives that build bridges. Not because it has to be, but because it is beautiful. Because it enriches, surprises and softens.
On the road to a Musical City of the Future
The question is not whether Muziek Maatjes will be continued, but how Eindhoven will use the experience and energy it has built up more broadly. Would it be feasible to have a form of Muziek Maatjes in every neighbourhood in five years’ time, where children, students, seniors and neighbours meet through music, stories or theatre? Not as a project, but as a natural part of city life.
Parktheater, Club Goud and their partners have already provided a valuable blueprint with Muziek Maatjes. Eindhoven is invited to continue building. Who will join us for the next song?
is to create real connections. The next step? Eindhoven as a city where culture and meetings go hand in hand - in theaters, community centers, and behind every front door. Who’s in?
What if culture structurally builds bridges between generations?
Music Maatjes shows the way.
I live a reasonably healthy and conscious life. But still I eat a bag of chips in one go, finish a roll of biscuits, still have a glass of wine with my meal, I keep doing things that are not good for me, even though many others do it too. Buying even more clothes while my wardrobe is overflowing is another example. I wonder: do these habits fall under serious addictions or can we speak of a kind of reward or comfort in the lighter category? I hear myself say: ‘I have worked so hard, I can buy those expensive shoes’ or ‘I can eat that bag, I will exercise again tomorrow anyway.’ In these cases, some regulation seems possible, unlike with the worst addiction of our time: the mobile phone. The small shiny, luminous device has crept into our lives unnoticed and is usually permanently in our hand or reach.
On the street around me I witness a strange worldview. In restaurants, canteens, the supermarket, at the bus stop, behind prams; everywhere the bent necks, people, including children, bowed over staring at a small screen. A hand that makes another movement at lightning speed. What are they looking at?
Wars and bad news flash by without you having to experience it. Bullies can destroy lives from a distance. Distorted beauty ideals on social media make young people believe that they should look like that too. Or is your mobile phone in camera mode? Privacy is a sacred thing, but anyone can film anyone, anytime and anywhere.
People spend hours a day on their phones. The phone spends hours a day on them. Algorithms determine what you see and especially what you keep seeing. Once you start scrolling, this movement easily leads to hours of screen time. It seems that adults in the Netherlands spend an average of three to four hours on their smartphones, and I think that is a conservative estimate. Half a day of screen time! In the meantime, we are all addicted and regulation is not exactly easy. To be honest, I also like to look at social media sometimes, play a game or listen to music. But the realization that we can no longer live without it is quite frightening.
If the phone is out of sight for a moment, panic sets in: ‘My whole life is in my phone!’ Sounds exaggerated, but it’s true. Do you still know a phone number by heart? Or your bank account, PIN codes, passwords? It’s time we became aware of our dependency and addiction, which for me is bigger than the bag of chips or expensive shoes.
Is there anything I can do? Of course, I check the ‘Digital Wellbeing’ function on my phone. Oops, I’ve already spent 210 minutes on my mobile. Admittedly 50 minutes under the label ‘Productivity and Finances’, but still...! Time for action! I immediately set the app timers and put my phone away. For the next few hours at least. Just for self-preservation.

The annual Final Exhibition Photography SintLucas can be seen again. Since 2017, these final year photography students have been exhibiting at Pennings Foundation. With the final exhibition, fourth-year Photography students from SintLucas course show their best work. Within the course, the development of both creativity and craftsmanship is central. The exhibition shows various disciplines: reportage, fashion, portrait and product photography. But storytelling is also discussed; it is special that in recent years students have increasingly been telling personal stories with photographic images. It is the first chance for the students to show their work in an exhibition.

‘A great lasting story is about everyone or it will not last. The strange and foreign is not interesting - only the deeply personal and familiar.’
John Steinbeck
To represent cabaret artist, actor and director Jules Keeris, we visit him at his parental home, in Knegsel. It was around the corner from here that I was deeply moved last year by the production Het lot van de Gebroeders Hoeks, directed by him; a Kempisch war story with cast and crew from the entire region, professionally musically framed by among others J W Roy. Recognition and memories of people, places, the song of life and our dialect, directly under a clear starry sky. In his cabaret programme Knegsel-Zuid, Jules is alone on the stage. Will that result in such a universal performance again?
‘I believe in: ‘the more personal, the more universal’. A good performance is not about making certain themes or stories universal, but something that is automatic, as long as it is personal and authentic. Then it is pure and real; not meant to please or score, but because something has to come out. The audience always feels that and it makes it easy for them to connect with it. Completely trusting my own experiences, insecurities, twists of thought, fantasy, jokes, my own taste; that sometimes feels quite exciting. But if you do that with integrity, then I believe that you can’t do it wrong. On the other hand, I can’t do it differently. I know a thing or two about some things and nothing about other things. I don’t have the knowledge and experience of where the world is going. I do know how searching it is sometimes to belong or not belong somewhere. Or how awkward it can be to celebrate carnival in Knegsel with your girlfriend from the city, to have to explain to your football team why I once went naked in a performance at the theatre academy and how insecure I can be about my slowly balding head. That kind of petty stuff.’
In Het lot van de Gebroeders Hoeks the community helped to shape it: even professional actors cannot act against the authenticity that the players showed there. ‘Craft and virtuosity alone are not enough. But if you link it to authenticity, then I think you have a kind of holy grail. At the same time, the imperfection of a recreational player can also move me very much. The authenticity and necessity that you saw in the Gebroeders Hoeks, the authenticity of the story and the roots of the people, that cannot be acted!’
The quote is very applicable and topical for Jules. ‘When I perform my cabaret programme Knegsel-Zuid in the region, the audience sometimes asks if I perform the same show throughout the country, because there are so many specific references and experiences in it. My answer is always: Yes, I do exactly the same everywhere, including the dialect when I parody ‘our mam’ for example. From Amsterdam to Winterswijk, the reactions never really differ. Even when people can barely understand the Kempen dialect. For me this confirms: the more personal, the more universal. Beautiful, isn’t it?’
The Knegsel-Zuid performance will have its season premiere on 17th September in the Parktheater and can then be seen throughout the country.
What happens when you step out of your own bubble? Burst your Bubble brings together Eindhoven internationals and locals. Eindless collects the stories that emerge from this. This time Aneke van Ravesteijn’s personal story.
In many parts of my life, both personally and professionally, I am often the one who makes space for others: I listen, guide, support. But when I walked into a Burst Your Bubble evening for the first time, I consciously decided to let that go. I came without a role, without a title, without a plan. Just as Aneke. No expectations. Curious. Ready to connect with others, and maybe a little bit more with myself. Usually, I am the one who opens the conversation, makes space for others and makes sure everyone feels seen. But this evening was different. I didn’t have to facilitate anything. I was not responsible. I was simply part of the circle. From the moment I walked in, I felt something shift. I didn’t feel the need to explain who I was or what I did. People didn’t come for small talk; they were genuinely interested. In me, in each other, just as we were. Honest.
When the microphone was passed around, I stood up. Not because I had prepared anything, but because the space felt safe enough to speak. I shared what it’s like to stay true to yourself when others often lean on you and the response wasn’t just polite listening. The entire room leaned forward. It reminded me that vulnerability isn’t a weakness. It’s a gateway to true connection.
Burst Your Bubble is a place where titles don’t matter, but stories do. A space where you can turn up as you are and still feel connected. It doesn’t matter where you come from. Whether you’re far or near, have lived here for years or have just arrived what matters is that you’re here. If you’ve ever thought I’m too busy, too insecure, or too new to go to something like this - then go. You don’t have to have a plan, just show up. You might go home with a new insight, a new friend, or even a part of yourself that you’ll find again.
A big thank you to the amazing Burst Your Bubble team - and especially to Ineke for creating and continuing to nurture this special, meaningful place. It’s wonderful to come together, share stories and really see each other, no matter where you come from. I’m grateful I got to be there. I’ll definitely be back!
Burst your Bubble is a Jump Movement Foundation scheme developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is an Uit in Eindhoven Foundation publication. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome..
Keti Koti: the day on which slavery was officially abolished in Suriname and the former Netherlands Antilles. It means ‘broken chains’ in Sranantongo, and is a day of commemoration, celebration, connection and eating together. A dish that is connected to Surinamese festivities is Pom, a fragrant casserole that you do not make carelessly, but with attention & love. Pom is a fusion of cultures & flavors: Jewish colonists brought the casserole to Suriname. The Creole population gave it their own twist with pomtayer (tropical root vegetable), orange, spicy chicken or salted meat. Whoever makes Pom, does not make a small dish. There is always enough for those who want to join in.
(for ± 8 persons)
Pom
It’s a dish that carries stories: about ancestors, resilience, loss and freedom. About how flavours can connect where words sometimes fall short.
Vegetarian version?
Use fried mushrooms and smoked tofu instead of chicken and salted meat.
1 kg grated pomtayer (available in the Asian store, often frozen)
1 kg chicken thighs (boneless)
150 g salt meat (or bacon)
2 oranges (juice)
2 onions & 3 cloves of garlic
3 tablespoons tomato puree Pepper, salt, nutmeg & 1 tbsp sugar Butter or oil for greasing
Fry the chicken and salted meat with onion, garlic, tomato puree and spices. Deglaze with orange juice and a little water. Mix the pomtayer with the meat and the braising liquid. Put everything in a greased oven dish, sprinkle with a few knobs of butter and bake the pom for about 1.5 hours at 180°C until the top is golden brown. Serve the Pom with rice, pickles and spicy sambal.
Keti Koti celebrate together!

The biggest theatre parade of the year!
On Sunday 31 August, the 66th Brabantsedag will kick off in Heeze. Sixteen towering rolling theatre sets and over two thousand actors will parade through the streets of the centre of Heeze. Come and watch, enjoy and be surprised!
The overarching theme of this year is Carnival Unmasked. The float builder groups delve into the origins, symbolism and traditions of carnival. Don’t expect a carnival procession, but a theatre parade that delves into this rich history. A parade full of imagination, craftsmanship and spectacle!
