There comes a time when silence is no longer possible.
Not when inequality is growing.
Not when people are excluded because they think differently, feel differently, or were born differently.
Not when disinformation erodes the trust we need to live together. And not if we continue to watch systems run while the earth creaks beneath our very existence. I believe that speaking up, really speaking out, is our moral duty. Not to shout, not to condemn, but to have the courage to speak up.
To say what we see, feel and know, even when it hurts. Especially then.
Because silence is never neutral.
In this edition of Eindless, we celebrate creators who use their voices. The winners of the Eindhoven Culture Prize show that art is not only beautiful, but also courageous. The Let’s Talk About Home festival questions what “home” means in a world that is increasingly shifting. And in all those performances and stories, films and fragments, large and small, you hear the same longing: to be seen, to be heard, to be human. So, let’s keep the conversation going. With open eyes and an open heart. Because whoever speaks, moves something within themselves, and in the world.
Speak softly, act clearly.

A soft landing
Eindhoven Airport is the gateway to the Brainport region. With direct connections to and from London, Alicante, Budapest, and other destinations, the airport brings people closer together for holidays, work, or visiting family. What remains is that first impression: the airport exudes Brabant hospitality and welcomes passengers with organised service and excellent connections. This is where your journey begins. Will you join us?
‘Alicante has truly stolen my heart’
Arrival from Alicante, Spain
Charmaine & son Saint
Age 27 years & 6 months Nationality Dutch
‘We just got back from two wonderful weeks in Alicante! It was so nice to get away with my partner and our children. Just together, without rushing or obligations. We go on holiday once or twice a year, usually flying from Eindhoven Airport. London and Alicante are our favourites, but Alicante has truly stolen my heart; I love going there. When I was 22, I decided to go back to school. I studied at the Summa College, even though I was already living on my own. It was quite challenging. I didn’t get along with all the teachers, and I struggled with having to do things. The obligation sometimes felt oppressive. Due to complications surrounding the birth, I’m currently on sick leave. I used to work at ASML as a data analyst, which is fantastic work! As soon as I’ve recovered, I’ll definitely go back to work. Part-time at first, because with two little ones at home, it’s already quite busy. Now, let’s get home, unpack our suitcases, do the laundry... get everything organized. And relax after the holiday; traveling with the little ones can be a challenge sometimes.’

‘We find the people in the Netherlands so kind and friendly’
Waving goodbye to Sofia, Bulgarije
Mohammed from Hanover and his friends Helal & Helal Al Chuwaizi from Deventer
Age 32, 28 & 32 Nationalities Syrian and Yemeni
‘It’s my first time in the Netherlands,’ Mohammed says. ‘I’ve enjoyed these four days with my friends: we’re all Arab. They live in Deventer; I live in Hanover. It’s not that far away, so it’s easy to come over for a few days.’ What has struck him? ‘I find the people in the Netherlands so kind and friendly.’ His friends wholeheartedly agree. Helal Al Chuwaizi: ‘I’m currently taking Dutch lessons and hope to reach B1, after which I want to work. But it’s not easy to learn Dutch properly.’ His friend, also named Helal, adds: ‘I’ve also taken Dutch lessons, but I don’t think they’re very good. I hear that from others too, and we find it very annoying. It’s not fast-paced and very commercial.’ Students are placed in multiple levels within a class, resulting in poorer Dutch learning. We’re truly concerned about the weak educational system. This really needs attention.’ What are their impressions of Eindhoven? Helal Al Chuwaizi: ‘I’ve been here many times. To a PSV match, visiting friends, and every year a truly wonderful light show. Glow! I think it’s coming up again in November?’
Helal is a Chemical Engineer and has lived in the Netherlands for three years. Helal Al Chuwaizi has been in the Netherlands for four years. Mohammed lives and works in Hannover, Germany.
Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.
Here are the winners! Eindhoven Culture Prize Ceremony
From the creative heart of Eindhoven, where ideas glow in the dark and communities grow, on 8th October at the Effenar, Oscar Kocken, on behalf of the Eindhoven Culture Prize Jury, unveiled the three faces that represent what makes, breathes, and moves Eindhoven: Club Symbiose, Erwin Thomasse, and Dynamo. Three winners who embody courage, imagination, and connection. People and places that give the city colour, sound, and, above all, meaning. They each add something to Eindhoven’s soul and enrich the city; not with money, but with ideas, energy, and imagination.
Three Voices, One Story
Underground, personal, and across generations, these winners demonstrate how Eindhoven not only innovates but also continues to connect. The underground vibe, the quiet imagination, and the youthful energy together form one story: that Eindhoven lives, vibrates, and is building a city where everyone can create something that moves and matters. Mike Dobber (Dynamo): ‘I love it most when young people surpass themselves. When you see them grow and take further steps in their lives. It’s wonderful to be able to contribute to the vibrancy of our city in this way.’
Club Symbiose Winner of the Incentive Award.
They quickly grew into a vibrant sanctuary for art, music, and performance and are working towards a new location, literally underground, in a Microstad basement. Club Symbiose brings together disciplines that often don’t find a platform elsewhere and shows that nightlife is also culture. They create space for alternative thinkers, experimentation, and togetherness. In short: the future of Eindhoven pulses in their bassline.
Captured and enchanted hearts in the heart of the city: Club Symbiose, a group of young creators who prove that nightlife is also culture. They are building a sanctuary where art, music, and performance meet, where subcultures finally get a platform, and where things are allowed to be just a little bit different. No glitter without foundation; That’s Symbiose.
The other nominees in this category were Demo and Eindhoven Pride.
Erwin Thomasse Winner of the Individual Appreciation Award.
A visual artist who doesn’t impose but invites. His work, from installations to graphic design, poses questions instead of providing answers. Erwin is the quiet force that enriches Eindhoven with meaningful images and concepts. Deeply rooted here, but always with an open mind. His dedication and modesty make him a fixture in Eindhoven’s cultural fabric. Perhaps you’re familiar with his work on the roof of the Van Abbemuseum? TURN. PANIC. INTO. MAGIC. And that’s it. Thomasse owns this town.
An artist who prefers to listen rather than shout: Erwin Thomasse. You don’t just see his work, you feel it. Installations, graphic design, interventions in public spaces: Erwin has enormous power in his thinking and acting and invites you to create meaning for yourself.
The other nominees in this category were Imke Sloos and Luka Kooijmans.
winners!
Dynamo Winner of the Organisation Appreciation Award.
A household name in the city for over forty years, and still just as young at heart. Dynamo is a place where generations of young people develop their talents, where subcultures converge, and where music, dance, art, and community reinforce each other. They understand better than anyone that culture starts with giving young people the space to create, to fail, to grow, and above all to be themselves.
Of course, a name that has resonated with the city for forty years: Dynamo!
A place where young people can be themselves, where talents flourish, and subcultures thrive. From hip-hop to gaming, from dance to design, Dynamo remains the beating heart of young Eindhoven. An organisation that evolves with every generation and knows: culture starts with giving young people the space they need.
The other nominees in this category were Mies en Scene and Bell’s Comedy Club.
Club Symbiose
‘Surrender to the DJ decks. Bass, groove, electro bangers from Symbiose. Bacchanalia, Dayparty: we’ve held all our events in the Club Garden. At our parties, we want to make the unexpected possible.’
Erwin Thomasse
‘Surrender to the DJ decks. Bass, groove, electro bangers from Symbiose. Bacchanalia, Dayparty: we’ve held all our events in the Club Garden. At our parties, we want to make the unexpected possible.’
Dynamo
‘We always work from the perspective of young people: what are their desires, what occupies their minds? And what question lies beneath their question? Often, there’s so much more to it; a social need that remains fundamentally the same. Our programmes are driven by young people, authentic, and open to innovation. By constantly reinventing ourselves, we remain relevant - a key strength of Dynamo.’
Kiki van Eijk & Maarten Baptist
A passion for color & the charm of transparency
Who wouldn’t love to wake up in the morning, drink a cup of coffee, and have these beautiful objects beside them? The transparent glass, which lets light shine through, combined with the texture of raku glass, creates harmony in the smallest details. Both objects emphasize beauty in simplicity, a natural form, and a distinctive design aesthetic.
Kiki and Maarten are talented product designers, both based in Eindhoven. They graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven two years apart and immediately showcased their talent and artistic vision to the world.
Raak U
Kiki van Eijk lives on a quiet farm in Eindhoven and works in a warehouse where she creates imaginative objects. She delights in observing the small, refined details of nature and uses color with rare intuition. In addition to collaborations with leading brands and institutions, she was the first Dutch visual artist to create a largescale installation for the Coachella Festival.
With an intuitive approach, Kiki delves into the Japanese lowtemperature technique of Raku, thereby enhancing the richness of sensory experiences. She gives this historical technique a contemporary reinterpretation and, through trial and error, develops her work towards contemporary design. Firing Raku in her garden studio adds an extra layer to the centuries-old process and offers her deeper insight into its possibilities and applications.
Working with fire at 1000 degrees Celsius is an intense physical process that results in unique smoked objects. Thanks to the many variables in the Raku process, every result is a surprise, even for the artist herself! No two objects will ever be the same. Kiki maintains her intuitive approach, creating a rich, sensory experience.
Three-legged Delight
Maarten Baptist is known for his minimalist and elegant style and designs products for everyday use at home or at work. The Tripod Glasses collection is inspired by the design of his iconic cutlery and arose from experiments with alternative ways to shape the stem of a wine glass, instead of the traditional flat base. By further exploring the possibilities of glass in relation to food, he became a true expert. “This series is made of technical laboratory glass, one of my favorite materials because of its high quality,” he explains. “It is manufactured from tubes and rods that are shaped by heating and blowing. Glassblowers who work with this technique are extremely precise, resulting in highly technical objects. Very different from glass formed with a kiln bell.” The Tripod series is perfectly suited to this craftsmanship of laboratory glassblowers.
Interesting detail: the first Tripod objects were made here in Eindhoven, together with the son of a master glassblower from Philips. Our city has a rich history of glassblowing: all light bulbs and television screens used to be made of glass. The series has been a great success: after the wine and water glasses, a coffee cup followed, designed to optimally showcase your favorite coffee beans. The transparent design offers a perfect view of the different layers of espresso, making every cup a small experience.

Just keep living
‘I’m almost 50, people. I repeat, I’m almost 50.’ I repeat this sentence mainly for myself. You probably read and understood it correctly the first time. Personally, I find this a strange thought. It’ll take a few more years before I get there. And maybe I won’t make it at all. But to keep this column a bit lighter, let’s assume I do make it. How do you describe your own end in 500 words? Impossible, I think. But thankfully, that’s not a topic for now. I’m almost 50, and I’ve been ruminating on it for a few weeks now. I just can’t get used to it. My eldest son is leaving home soon; my body and hormones are acting strangely. All these changes, not only around me, but also within me. How do you cope with growing old? I asked my mother that question, and she laughed at me out loud. She said it would all work out, as long as you just keep living. She doesn’t understand why I’m so concerned about this, and that I need more guidance to prepare for this new phase I’m entering. I don’t find my question at all strange. My parents and I separated in my teens, and she physically lived in Morocco. I’ve only seen her a few times since then. Besides, I grew up without grandparents nearby.
I haven’t seen anyone in my immediate circle grow old up close. I haven’t been able to simply witness that process and experience firsthand the impact of time on a person. From youth to old age. I want to be able to prepare myself; that’s how I am. Then I won’t be startled by the first signs, and I can deal with them calmly. Where does the decline begin? With painful knees, lower back pain? Osteoporosis after menopause? Will I go bald, or will my hair thin? What will droop and what won’t? These are just the physical symptoms. What about the hormonal side? I know women who take hormone supplements to suppress menopausal symptoms. What if I experience so many symptoms due to hormonal fluctuations that I’m no longer as effective at work? Am I willing to bear those consequences because I believe it’s necessary to age gracefully, even though I don’t yet know what that means? Or do I also want supplements to keep going? I have only questions and no answers. I don’t know yet. What I do know is that I seem to be trapped by some sort of ideal of female beauty. I’d like to keep my body at 30.
There are plenty of other topics to occupy my mind besides the effect of gravity on my body. I think I’ll just follow my mother’s advice. Just keep living, and everything will work out.

Burst your Bubble
Khan is a software engineer in Eindhoven and recently discovered Burst Your Bubble. The fact that you can meet people there with mutual respect and make genuine connections makes him very enthusiastic about this platform.
BUBBLES & BUBBLE BLOWING
Being open to others is the first step in connecting
‘When I was blowing bubbles as a child, I always wanted to make bigger bubbles and keep playing with them without popping them. How different that is as an adult. Consciously or unconsciously, I now, like all of us, create my own bubbles and don’t feel comfortable leaving them or letting others into them. Burst Your Bubble is an initiative that can help people who find it difficult to leave their comfort zone and who are genuinely interested in meeting new people in a fun way. A great platform for both locals and internationals to make real connections! Burst Your Bubble brings my life vision one step closer to the reality where people meet without differences and with mutual respect. Like birds in the open air or fish in the deep ocean: warm and spontaneous. Nature gives us so many examples of togetherness. It’s an unavoidable fact that we need each other. In my view, being open to one another is the first step in connecting. And Burst Your Bubble is the perfect place for people to practice that. You feel the eternal energy of togetherness.’
Burst your Bubble is a Jump Movement Foundation scheme developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is an Uit in Eindhoven Foundation publication. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome.

Sjostakovitsj 11 and Liya Petrova
To mark the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, Philzuid presents one of his greatest works: in his Symphony No. 11, he translated the Russian Revolution of 1905 into music. His composition is imbued with tension, raw emotion, and sharp contrasts. Whispering strings and ominous silences build dramatic outbursts, in which fear, hope, and struggle alternate. Under the baton of star conductor Martyn Brabbins, Philzuid brings this captivating symphonic musical document to life. The concert opens with lyrical work by the composer Fyodor Akimenko, before Liya Petrova delves into the fiendishly difficult violin concerto by Carl Nielsen.
Philhalloween with Symfonie fantastique
Halloween evokes dark scenes and unexpected twists. Philzuid presents a program full of oppressive atmosphere and musical suspense. The evening begins with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas, a captivating tale of a student who struggles to control magic, with dramatic consequences. The magic continues in Weinberg’s Trumpet Concerto, which varies dramatically in its effects. Shostakovich described it as a “symphony for trumpet and orchestra.” And that’s in good hands with top trumpeter Simon Höfele, who quickly became one of the most prominent trumpeters of his generation. And we conclude with a hallucinatory journey through obsessive love, madness, and a creepy witches’ sabbath. Exactly, the ingredients for Hector Berlioz’s much-loved Symfonie fantastique. A concert full of musical tension and dark beauty, perfect for a good scare.

The Threepenny Opera is a stimulating entertainment that challenges us to critically examine society and morality. Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht wrote this satirical play with music, brimming with social criticism (1928). Almost a hundred years later, it remains sharp and relevant. Betrayal, corruption, and bribery reveal the inner workings of the (under)world in this story about the gangster Macheath. Weill’s iconic music pushes the boundaries of musical theatre. Classical music, cabaret, jazz, and chanson merge into a timeless, unique, and highly artistic experience.

Händel’s Messiah
Meet Numidia, one of the most versatile singers in the Netherlands. Her musical journey began on national television, where she shone in programs like The Voice Kids, Het Perfecte Plaatje, Beste Zangers, Stars on Stage, and The Masked Singer.
The story of Jesus Christ has inspired centuries with its message of hope and comfort. All emotions converge: love, sorrow, trial, and redemption. George Frideric Handel gave this story a unique voice to his Messiah. Beautiful arias, jubilant choral pieces, and sparkling baroque music resonate in this Advent masterpiece. “I truly thought I saw all of heaven before me and the great God himself,” Handel said of his Messiah. Conducted by Peter Dijkstra, his Vocal Ensemble MUSA, and Philzuid, you will be taken on a musical journey full of feeling and beauty. The soloists, including soprano Anna Dennis and countertenor Maarten Engeltjes, add their radiant voices. Messiah embraces the joy and light of Christmas and leaves no heart untouched. Hallelujah!

Music says a lot about a person. That’s why Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is engaging in a conversation with an Eindhoven resident from a cultural community, based on five cherished songs. This time: Ebru Janssens-Kayan (51), Chair of the Turkish Professionals Network Eindhoven (TPNE), Eindhoven Library Event Programmer and Merhaba Eindhoven Festival Ambassador.
‘I’m a true love migrant,’ Ebru begins the conversation. Twenty-three years ago, I left Turkey for my husband Gerard.’ A big smile spread across her face. ‘I met him on a plane when I was working as a flight attendant. He greeted me in Turkish, and later, we sat across from each other during landing. We spoke briefly. I liked him, but it wasn’t allowed to ask for his contact information while working. Two weeks later, I received a letter. I immediately suspected who had written it!’ We ended up getting married in the Netherlands. We then had a big party in Turkey. Of course, a first dance was a must. We danced to You Are the Dream by Ilse DeLange. After all, at a Turkish party, there must be dancing!’
9/8 rhythm
Ebru spent her entire childhood in the Trakia region, in northwestern Turkey. ‘The locals call themselves the happiest people in the world. Perhaps it’s also due to the Balkan influences that characterize the region,’ she thinks. ‘No matter how sad you are, as soon as you hear Trakia music in its characteristic 9/8 rhythm, you just have to dance. All your worries disappear instantly!’ Now, the music of the place where she grew up still holds a warm place in her heart. ‘Choosing my five songs made me a little emotional. I lived there mostly with my parents and grandmother, and we had many neighbours. Everything happened together, from cooking to dining.’ Ebru explains: ‘The song I chose (Bekle by Kardes Türküler & Candan Erçetin) also has that 9/8 rhythm. But I also really like the message. It’s about not complaining but just getting on with it.’ She admits to having doubts about whether she shouldn’t choose Guus Meeuwis: ‘When I hear Brabant, I get emotional. I feel like a Brabant native. I’ve lived most of my adult life here, so to what extent am I still truly Turkish?’
Setbacks
Ebru doesn’t find it difficult that she no longer lives in Turkey. ‘My husband actually arrived just in time. I moved to Istanbul at eighteen to study. That same year, my mother became ill. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she unfortunately died of two years later. Those were very difficult years, because in a short time, I ultimately lost both my parents, my grandmother, and my cousin. She tried to escape all the misfortune. ‘I really needed something positive. And luckily, my husband was there.’ Bahçede, by singer Sertab Erener, takes her back to the time when her parents and grandmother were still alive. ‘It’s about a summer evening, fireflies, and the scent of honeysuckle and jasmine. I think time travel really exists, because when I hear that song, I can already see myself sitting in my grandmother’s garden. It’s not for nothing that I named my daughter Yasemin, after the scent of jasmine in the garden.’
‘It Will Pass’
‘Vier de Turkse cultuur’
Four years ago, tragedy struck Ebru. ‘My mother’s illness affected me too. At the same time, a friend’s husband became ill. She told me they always danced to Tarkan’s Geççek. He sings ‘It Will Pass.’ Whether it’s a period of illness or the political situation, everything will be alright in the end. I’ve held on to that ever since.’ Yet, she now finds it difficult to listen to the song. ‘I’ve recovered, but unfortunately, my friend’s husband didn’t. He passed away. The song reminds me of him most of the time now.’
Merhaba
Ebru is also involved in the Merhaba Eindhoven Festival in the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. ‘Four years ago, I got involved as a TPNE Board Member. It’s wonderful that Merhaba is a festival where Turkish/ Dutch people can express themselves in their own language and culture. The community really appreciates that!’ She’s also proud of the festival’s name: ‘I think I suggested the name myself and it’s especially nice that Merhaba was the beginning of how I met Gerard!’ She concludes the conversation with her latest song, Istanbul by Levent Yüksel. He sings about the city as if it were a woman he loves. I think Istanbul is truly the city where Turkish culture is best expressed. And of course, Yüksel is also performing at the festival in the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven!”

van Beckhoven Masterful Celebration
There’s always something to celebrate, and what connects to all these occasions is... the bakery. The subject that Master Pastry Chef and Master Baker Robert van Beckhoven loves to sink his teeth into during his theatrical food experience: Masterful Celebration!
Dmytro Petryna The Imitation Game
“The whole world is a circus and the people in it are clowns.” Photographer Dmytro Petryna explores the complexity of human emotions through the image of a clown - a symbol of both joy and sadness. With his colorful makeup and broad smile, the clown appears cheerful and carefree at first glance. However, this mask can conceal a whole range of emotions. It exaggerates the extreme states of human emotion and serves as a metaphor for the “masks” people often wear in everyday life.
Opening FRIDAY 7 November, from 7:00 PM Open every Sunday from 1:00 PM.

AI, all over the place
Everyone has their guilty pleasures. Besides chocolate and cookies, I have another one: I can spend hours watching animal videos with otters, cats, or monkeys; preferably in the wild. Last week, Jane Goodall passed away. The touching moment when a chimpanzee returns to the wildlife sanctuary gives Jane a long hug, and thanks her for her good care, has been recognized worldwide. It’s a real, sincere, and pure image that shows that animals have emotionsJane Goodall showed us this in her work and documentaries. Unfortunately, that animals have feelings is still far from universally recognised. That they have fun together, however, is. Now I saw a funny video; several cats were sitting on the backs of pigs jumping on a trampoline. The footage was filmed with a night camera. Something so funny makes me so happy. I knew pigs were smart animals, but I’d never seen that they could also jump on a trampoline! Another video showed a cheetah tapping on a cat flap, trying to get the house cat to come play. I finally got it... these aren’t real videos at all, but AI-generated clips! I felt cheated. And especially stupid that, with my supposed knowledge of animals, I hadn’t realised the footage might be fake!
Now that I’m paying attention, I see that videos on social media like Facebook are becoming increasingly ridiculous, and I increasingly doubt the existence of ‘real footage’. After all, anything can be manipulated. I see massive building collapses, celebrities spouting complete nonsense (and I don’t mean figures like Trump or Musk, who are real). Or a ferocious chase on the A2 highway in which an American SWAT team arrests the news anchor, including the use of a Taser. All created by video software powered by artificial intelligence.
Open AI, Facebook, and Google are waging an intense battle: who will win the AI war? Where you might once have seen six fingers on a hand or stiff movements, and you knew images were fake, videos are now frighteningly realistic.
Disinformation and propaganda through AI lurk and creep into our lives. The creative industries, advertising agencies, and video creators are suffering greatly, especially small businesses and our youth, they are growing up with this. First there were filters, which now seem quite harmless. Now there’s AI and deepfake; do they see the difference between real and fake? How often does a toddler ask, ‘Is it real?’ What can we answer?
I see many obstacles if AI continues to gain ground: job losses and human skills, ethical and moral challenges, safety risks, and a lack of regulation. Of course, there are immense benefits: AI can make life easier, safer, and more productive, if we use it responsibly and conscientiously, and I believe we need people for that.
For now, I propose adding a disclaimer under videos: Fake, AI-generated if it’s manipulated footage. Then I can choose for myself: do I go for fake, or do I go for authentic? Scrolling through my phone, I see her again; Jane Goodall, talking about her next great adventure: dying. ‘There’s nothing at all, or there’s something. That’s it. If there is something, I can’t imagine a greater adventure. I think there is something because of all the experiences and what I’ve been through on earth.’ I believe her.
MATHILDE LAGEMAN Director & Co-owner STE Languages
“‘Where you used to see some stiff movements and knew the images were fake, videos are now frighteningly realistic.’
‘I’m literally an example of who learned to dance in the Andrey ‘Drosha’ Grekhov
Hip-hop emerged in the mid-1970s as a vibrant cultural outlet for young Black Americans to express themselves - fun and playfulness combined with the struggle against marginalisation and oppression in African-American history. Born out of desperation in the Bronx, the movement drew on African traditions and placed them in an American context. Using electronic instruments often made from recycled materials, hip-hop spread rapidly to become a global movement, like creative energy struck by a virus. The need to have fun, hang out with your crew, and find a place to channel frustrations still plays a role in how we use our city.
We spoke with Andrey ‘Drosha’ Grekhov not only about his impressive personal story, but also about the Eindhoven dance community’s valuable impact. After becoming World Champion of Experimental Hip-Hop in 2012, he taught at various dance schools for ten years. He now focuses primarily on professionalising the urban scene, working from Eindhoven as artistic director of Sample Culture and EMOVES. Drosha is also a co-founder of Open Your Mind and Urban Dance Days.
When did your adventure in Eindhoven begin?
‘I was born in Rostov-on-Don in the Soviet Union, a country that no longer exists. When the Soviet Union collapsed, I came to the Netherlands in the summer of 1994, straight to Veldhoven. That’s where my story begins.
I was 14 years old, the first foreigner in the neighbourhood. This was before the arrival of expats, before the internet, before ASML, before everything. It was a wonderful time. I was already interested in hip-hop, but I didn’t find anyone here who shared that interest until I started school. It was tough at times: I was one of three foreign kids and there was a lot of discrimination. But I went from being bullied to being the best dancer in school. I was already very good then. It’s actually a fascinating story: I became integrated through dance and hip-hop.’
Where did you learn to dance?
‘I’m literally a street artist. I copied moves from illegal videotapes. In 1997, hip-hop became more popular and mainstream. I found my way to Dynamo, met others, and realised: I’m a breakdancer! I became part of the local hip-hop ecosystem in various roles: organiser, volunteer, talent developer, and teacher and in 2012, I became the world champion in Paris.’
You’re considered a pioneer of the hip-hop dance scene.
‘Battles, organising, teaching and performing are all in hip-hop’s DNA. I developed as a pioneer and community leader until I got older and became a father, stepped out of the spotlight, and started working more behind the scenes. I still mentor many dancers, both formally and informally, and as a result, Eindhoven has a rich jam culture, which is all about jamming. Like jazz musicians do, but in dance. Eindhoven now has more dance jams than cities like Amsterdam or Rotterdam. At Dynamo, Area 51, in Strijp-S, on the streets: almost every day. Not just a group of kids, but an entire community passionate about sharing skills. For example, every Wednesday there’s a jam at Dynamo. During the pandemic, we even learned to DJ ourselves, which we passed on to the younger generation. We created a community, an ecosystem of dancers. A passion project we’re incredibly proud of.’
What was the scene in Eindhoven like back then, and how has it changed?
‘They call the ‘90s the golden age. For me, that time was sugary sweet: naive, beautiful, raw, and violent. After that, everything became increasingly mainstream and civilized. The city developed under the influence of Philips, and all those big things like Dutch Design Week came along with it.
Hip-hop and the street scene were always there, but never extremely mainstream, because that wasn’t the intention. A lot happened quietly and under the radar. We still have an influential culture in Eindhoven, but it’s once again under pressure from systemic neglect. That’s why we’re working even harder now to keep the culture alive in this new cityscape. It’s a big question mark: how strong will we be in the next ten years?’

HIP-HOP CULTURE
Hip-hop represented the daily struggles of city life and symbolically took over urban space through sampling, sound effects, flow, dance, style, and attitude. DJing, MCing, graffiti, and breakdance are the core art forms of the movement. With graffiti and street art, young people responded to urban decay and poverty, demanding visibility and a voice. For breakdancers, sidewalks became stages; they turned the city into a meeting place. DJs organised illegal block parties for peace and unity, tapping into the power supply in neighbourhoods ravaged by violence. Rappers discovered new musical worlds beyond rock. In the 1980s, hip-hop also inspired young people in Europe, as far away as Eindhoven, to start their own movements, leaving behind an important, often overlooked, legacy. From the first crews, breakdance grew into the most famous hip-hop style worldwide. While DJs found new ways to mix tracks and slow them down or speed them up, b-boys had more time and freedom to experiment and innovate. Breakdance is now also seen in theatre performances and shows, and it made its Olympic debut in Paris in 2024.
On important themes that resonate and demand deeper exploration
Let’s talk about... HOME
Theatre as a means of engaging in conversation and connecting; during the Outspoken Theatre Festival Let’s talk about home, we’ll explore the meaning of home together. From 1st to 18th November, creators, thinkers, and neighbours will share their stories and perspectives on connection and identity. The festival explores what unites people, what makes them unique, and how family, culture, and memories transform a place into home. Get ready, because a diverse programme of performances, exhibitions, workshops, discussions, and more awaits you! Which highlights shouldn’t you miss?
Frank d’Achard van Enschut, Social Impact Marketer at Parktheater Eindhoven, shares his best tips.
First, I want to highlight Where is Sarah?, a story that immediately puts you in the shoes of people risking their lives. The narrative takes you along and makes you part of a larger social problem. It’s timely, heartwarming, and I think it will also be heartbreaking at times.
Rob Timmerman shares his experiences at sea and encounters with the people at the heart of it all: the migrants and refugees risking their lives to reach Europe. His story is unique and lovingly contributes to the humanisation of boat refugees. The main character receives a small box at sea as a gift. In this presentation, he shows how this ‘gift’ later intersects with Rob’s life. Where is Sarah? is a story that takes you to your heart and allows you to look at the world with integrity.
A humorous performance that explores a serious topic in a disarming way seems to me to be Zachtop Lachen (Soft Laughter). The idea that you suddenly no longer dare to do something that always came naturally sounds exciting and strange at the same time. At the same time, it’s relatable how people keep things secret out of shame. It promises to be a special performance that truly stays with you.

Salomé tries to find her place in the world while grappling with her past, family and experiences in a juvenile detention centre. The fiery play Confrontations shows how identity, connection and the sense of belonging are shaped by choices, environment and relationships. An energetic and musical performance about surviving, growing and finding yourself despite chaos and adversity. 1 2 3 2
Let’s talk about... Food Soft Laughter and Confrontations come together with the unique dining experience. Food for Thought by food designer Franke Elshout from Eindhoven. During her recovery, she discovers that it’s not a fictional character, but her own repressed history that’s speaking to her. As if this lonely inbetween space gives her the space to rediscover who she can be.
The last tip I’d like to mention before the festival is the dance performance “Detour Home.” I find the music fascinating, Zanad’s story intrigues me, and I’m curious to see how he can translate this into a dance performance. I’m still relatively new to dance myself, but that’s precisely why this triptych seems like a great way to explore it. The combination of solo, group piece, and documentary makes it complete and invites me to see the performance.

Bread for the Living & the Dead for Day of the Dead
On November 1st and 2nd, Mexico transforms into a sea of colors, scents, and lights. During Day of the Dead (D a de los Muertos), families gather to honor their deceased loved ones. It’s not a somber occasion, but a celebration filled with flowers, music, and food. The sweet Pan de Muerto is one of the most famous dishes: a light bread that symbolizes the circle of life.

UNESCO Heritage
Day of the Dead has been on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List since 2008. It combines indigenous traditions with Catholic elements. The colorful altars are filled with photos, candles, orange cempasúchil (marigolds), and favorite foods of the deceased.
were ldsm aken &tra dities Pan de Muerto
500 grams flour / 75 grams sugar / 10 grams yeast
100 grams butter (room temperature)
200 ml lukewarm milk
2 eggs
Zest of 1 orange Pinch of salt
Preparation
Extra! Crystal sugar for decoration
Combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add milk, eggs and orange zest. Knead into a smooth dough. Add butter and knead for another 10 minutes. Let rise for 1 hour until it doubled in size.
Shape into a large ball. Use some of the dough to create ‘bones’ and place them crosswise on the bread. Let rise for another 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated oven (180°C) for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. This bread is traditionally shared with family and friends.
Serve with hot chocolate and share stories about those you want to remember.
Rituals connect
In the Brainport region too, commemorations are becoming increasingly personal. From candlelight evenings at cemeteries to creative altars: we are exploring new ways to celebrate memories.
