Signs of design

October shines a spotlight on Eindhoven. The city is both a breeding ground and a global stage: raw, idiosyncratic, and with a touch of techno, but also refined, progressive, and international. During Dutch Design Week, you’ll see how designers experiment, take risks, and shape new realities, and how it all comes together in the city’s streets, halls, and studios. Being seduced by the signs of design; there’s something special about it. This edition of Eindless reflects that duality. October has a packed agenda and stories that touch and confront but also inspire and connect. Our innovative, ever-transforming environment demonstrates that innovation is never smooth or finished, but always in motiondriven by curiosity, courage, and the power of togetherness.

Eindhoven Airport is the gateway to the Brainport region. With direct connections to and from London, Alicante, Budapest, and other destinations, the airport brings people closer together for holidays, work, or visiting family. What remains is that first impression: the airport exudes Brabant hospitality and welcomes passengers with organised service and excellent connections. This is where your journey begins. Will you join us?

‘Today Eduarda is flying for the first time’
‘Eindhoven Iconic has become a true home for me’

Departure to Sevilla Leandro, Tamiris and daughter Eduarda

Age Both 31 and 6 months • Nationality Brazilian

‘We’re originally from Brazil. We’ve been happily living in the Netherlands for 2.5 years now. We enjoy all the greenery in Valkenswaard and the vibrancy of Eindhoven. We love being outdoors: walking in the parks and just in our neighbourhood. Before we had Eduarda, we regularly went to Eindhoven city centre for a bite to eat at one of the nice restaurants. We enjoy visiting museums; we liked the DAF Museum, and we’d also like to visit the Philips Museum sometime. Now that Eduarda is already 6 months old, we’re also taking her into the city. We use public transport a little less often; we take the car. Today we’re flying with Eduarda for the first time. The journey here went well. Eindhoven Airport is a pleasant airport; everything is well organized here. We’re very curious to see how she’ll like flying.’

Leandro and Tamiris are going on their first family holiday. They’ll fly first to Seville and then to Faro. Leandro works at ASML and Tamiris works for the caterer at the same location.

Direct connections, close to home

Working on Eindhoven Airport

‘I work at Starbucks here at Eindhoven Airport. Sixteen years ago, I moved to Eindhoven because of my husband’s work at ASML. He started there in 1999, and next week they’re celebrating his anniversary. When we first moved here, the city felt small and cozy. Now Eindhoven is much more dynamic and international. Speaking English is never a problem here. I taught Korean to children for a while. The Korean community organises events like sports days or the end-of-year celebrations, but because I’m often busy with my children, I can’t always be there. My son (15) and daughter (17) are in their 6th and 4th year of pre-university education (VWO). They play hockey, swim, and my son and I play golf together. I enjoy working out at David Lloyd in Meerhoven: swimming, Body Pump, or just working out with people I’ve met there. Eindhoven has truly become a home for me. I enjoy going to the movies, neighbourhood parties, or a nice dinner. We usually travel during the school holidays. Last summer we went to Crete; we haven’t planned anything for our next trip yet but we’re sure it will happen.’

Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.

Kitchen Confessions, 2nd floor of the Klokgebouw. Jeroen van der Wielen and Yorit Kluitman set up their cameras, and Sanne Reiniers and Maarten Lockefeer quickly review the kitchen walkthrough as the guests arrive for the roundtable interview. Arts and culture professionals from various corners of the city, each with their own voice and vision for the future. What does culture look like in Eindhoven? Where are the opportunities, and where are the challenges? What they don’t know yet: there’s a surprise at the end of this conversation. Tanja Mlaker (SCE) and the Eindhoven Cultural Awards Jury are ready to reveal something special.

Roundtable Interview

The first words are for business manager Peer Roosen, who, corepresenting artistic director Michèle Rijzewijk, represents Mies-enScène, the company that brings the stories of rarely heard people to the stage. Also involved with United Cowboys, Coach 040, and formerly with Cultuur Eindhoven, Peer is firmly rooted in the field. ‘I’m primarily connected with performances where something is happening. The audience that sees things differently, the city that moves with them. Yet, in the performing arts, and especially in the poetry and spoken word scene, I keep encountering the same people. Even us here, we’re all fighting for the same fund. A fund that’s too small. While each of us wants to help the city move forward, preferably together.’

Theatre creator/writer Oscar Kocken nods in agreement. He also presents, among other things, the talk show Korte Golf in Natlab. ‘You want to forge your own path, but that often overlaps with others. The question is: how bad is that? It’s precisely by asking naive questions that something new can emerge.’

Then Zoë Grijn and Erik Stappers, the duo behind DEMO, introduce themselves. Their organisation is young, mobile, and has no fixed location. Using cargo bikes, temporary exhibitions, and workshops, they provide a platform for creators and designers. ‘Always based on the community’s needs,’ says Zoë, who previously worked on projects with Morgenmakers and CKE. ‘And extra flexible since we’re out of space.’ Erik, also active with Stadsmakers Eindhoven, adds: ‘But it’s still bizarre: being on the street with your community, while there are plenty of vacant buildings.’ While DEMO is moving into the city, Dynamo has had a permanent location for decades.

Director and programmer Mike Dobber is committed to youth culture and subcultures. ‘With us, young people are allowed to fail and develop,’ he says. Mike previously worked at the Hall of Fame in Tilburg. In Eindhoven, he builds projects like Step in the Arena, and new platforms, projects, and music labels. ‘I consciously seek out the rough edges. Eindhoven hasn’t been smoothed over, and that’s a good thing, but I recognize the tension Peer described: there are more and more requests, and the budget isn’t growing accordingly. That’s a problem.’

Johan Stribos, Chair of Eindhoven Pride, drag performer, and Chair of Queer040, is also at the table. He explains how the first Pride Walk came about spontaneously: ‘Because no one dared. Two years later, eighteen thousand people participated, and Eindhoven Pride grew into a parade and festival on Stadhuisplein. We create space for queer culture. It doesn’t belong in the margins, but at the heart of the city’s cultural landscape.’

At opportune moments, artist Erwin Thomasse joins the conversation. His work is firmly rooted in Eindhoven and often arises from moments of crisis: he melted candles after the fire at the Stroomhuisje or offers a counterargument: Erwin designed the Rararadio logo, for example, mirroring the VWD logo. ‘Creativity lies in how you deal with adversity,’ he says. ‘My

text ‘Turn panic into magic’ returns to the roof of the Van Abbemuseum: it responds to a widespread feeling. First with the pandemic, now with the threats of war on a global scale, I want to let the city speak through art.’

About space and love for the city

What follows is a lively conversation about the loss of places like the Stroomhuisje, which Peer believes was indispensable for underground culture. About collaboration and making ideas work. And about love for the city. Oscar: ‘In Eindhoven, you don’t need to spend ten years making a name for yourself. You get noticed faster, and people just come and see. Get involved. Even the mayor.’ Mike nods: ‘That’s typical Eindhoven: just start. Don’t talk, just get on with it.’ Johan smiles: ‘And that you can be completely yourself.’

Zoë: ‘Space becomes less important then.’ Oscar: ‘Yes, and it says a lot about the city’s curiosity. Erwin mentions the raw mentality: ‘It’s not there, so we’ll make it ourselves. There’s a lot of love there too.’

Then comes the surprise. Tanja Mlaker of the Eindhoven Culture Foundation and the Eindhoven Culture Prize Jury enter. There’s considerable confusion, even among the newly arrived Luka Kooijmans and the creators who are digitally dialing in. Tanja reveals that everyone has been nominated. A conversation about concerns, opportunities, and ideals thus transforms into a recognition of their significance to the city. The impetuous energy lingers. ‘We should do this more often,’ says Peer. ‘There’s a power in all of us being brought together at one table.’ Everyone nods. It’s a taste for more.

Johan Moorman Graphic Storyteller

Eindhoven artist and designer Johan Moorman (born 1980) always explores the boundaries between street art, design, and architecture. His work is recognizable by its clean lines, bright colors, and references to comics and pop culture. Instead of canvas or paper, he often uses the city itself as his canvas. He transforms buildings, facades, and squares into graphic narratives. You might know Moorman from his murals in Strijp-S. His style bridges the gap between subculture and the established art world. It is playful, innovative, and has a distinct signature. His independent work, such as his graphic paintings, is fantastic. And available in limited editions.

Marokkaas

These past few days, I’ve been feeling a bit tense. The Bladi festival is almost here, the first Moroccan festival in the Muziekgebouw, Eindhoven. A few months ago, the Muziekgebouw contacted me and told me they wanted to organise a Moroccan festival, following the Turkish, Indian, and Polish festivals.

Did I want to contribute? Of course! We got together with a small group and quickly realised we wanted to showcase the richness of Moroccan culture throughout the day. We had a story to tell. The story of a culture connected to a country we no longer live in, the country our parents came from. The country we know from our summer holidays, the one we looked forward to every year as children, but where, after three weeks, we started whining that we wanted to go home because Dutch soft serve ice cream is tastier than Moroccan helado.

In Morocco, we met other Moroccan holidaymakers, other Moroccans living across the European continent. Even though we all looked Moroccan, we could recognise which country someone came from by their clothing. Moroccan Dutch people dressed differently from German and English Moroccans. How many Dutch-German football matches did I watch as a child on the Moroccan beaches with the same emotion as if it were a World Cup match?

Moving forward in time. I think we’ve now had five generations of Moroccans in the Netherlands. A connection to the mother country remains. If only because of their appearance, which is regularly referred to, emphasising once again that you’re not entirely from here. But ultimately, we are simply Dutch, including the integration into the Dutch daily routine. Which Moroccan still has time to prepare a hot meal twice a day, including freshly baked bread? Whose door can you still spontaneously show up at, without an appointment? Which Moroccan doesn’t like stroopwafels and chocolate sprinkles? With the Bladi festival, we’re giving a writer and documentary filmmaker a platform to showcase their work, work that honours the first generation. But also, a young photographer who has captured the fusion of Moroccan and Dutch culture among young people

We look back to where we came from. At the same time, it’s a statement. We are here. We’ll stay here. In so many different ways, we are part of this country, of this culture. We are rich because we’ve embraced different worlds. Dutch potatoes with a touch of ras el hanout. As my son recently said, ‘Mum, you’re truly Moroccan.’ Yup, 100 percent!

Burst your Bubble

Frans and Mary look back on their first months as the Burst Your Bubble Production Team. One feeling prevails: this was more than just running productions. It was a journey of discovery, of collaboration, trust and discovery of themselves.

FROM COOKIES AND COSTUMES TO CONNECTION AND TRUST

Behind the scenes of Burst your Bubble, where magic and humanity collide.

Frans explains: ‘In February, I started with what I knew: the knowledge and tools from previous productions. I set out with that, searching for locations, making plans. But along the way, I realised this project required something different. Seven months, three kick-offs, and five Jump events later, I had not only completed eight productions but also got to know myself better. And learned that letting go is more productive than holding on. I felt that not only in my work, but also in who I am as a person.’

For Mary, the journey began even earlier. ‘Two years ago, I attended a Burst your Bubble event at the Ilse Wouters Academy as a participant. The atmosphere was so warm and safe that I was immediately touched. I kept coming back as a volunteer, and earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to participate as a producer. I thought then: what a wonderful challenge! But what I didn’t expect is how much fun and connection I would experience. With Frans, our team, the volunteers it doesn’t feel like work, but like creating something beautiful together.’

The collaboration took them both further than they expected. For Frans, the growth lay in trust: ‘I knew we were similar as people, but now it suddenly made perfect sense. When you build together, talk honestly, and give each other space, differences disappear. That insight gave me so much peace. I saw that maintaining control takes energy, while letting go gives energy. It made me gentler toward myself and others.’ Mary especially discovered the power of joy. ‘Before an event, Frans and I look at each other. We feel the same excitement, the same energy. We know we’re going to create something special and when I see the happy faces at the end of the evening, I feel gratitude. This is exactly why I do this. I’ve learned that with love and joy, you can move mountains.’

What unites them is that Burst your Bubble isn’t just a series of events, but a movement. A place where people experience that they’re not as different as they thought. Frans: ‘This process has made my work lighter. Less rigid, more trusting.’ Mary: ‘I’ve learned that connection and love cost nothing yet are the most valuable things you can give.’

Together they say: ‘That’s why we keep doing this. Building bridges between people because at our core, we all share the same desire: to be seen, to contribute, and to be together.’

Burst your Bubble is a Jump Movement Foundation scheme developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is an Uit in Eindhoven Foundation publication. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome.

MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN | 20:15 | POP

NENA is returning to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven! In 1983, the German pop legend broke through internationally with “99 Luftballons” and has since sold over 25 million albums. But it didn’t stop with that one hit: with songs like “Nur geträumt,” “Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann,” and “Leuchtturm,” she continued to build on her success. In a spectacular show, NENA and her ten-piece band will take you on a journey through her rich musical career, from the energetic ’80s to her more recent work.

MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN | 20:15 | CLASSIC

Philip Glass Ensemble

Het Philip Glass Ensemble returns to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on Sunday, October 19, with a live performance of Glassworks, the legendary 1982 album. With this neoclassical masterpiece, Philip Glass aimed to make his music accessible to a wider audience – and he succeeded. Glassworks captures Glass’s unmistakable style: sharp sonorities, layered patterns, and an unstoppable musical flow. The Philip Glass Ensemble will perform the complete six-part work exclusively in Eindhoven, in a rendition that stays true to the original composition.

MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN | 20:15 | CLASSIC SAT 11 OCTOBER

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra has become a true audience favorite in Eindhoven. After previous successful performances, the Scots return to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on Saturday, October 11.

The program features the Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes: music that evokes the sea in all its moods, from tranquil dawn to raging storm. This is followed by Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, the last work he composed. Pianist Jan Lisiecki will also shine with the orchestra in Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, a piece full of drama, lyricism, and sparkling virtuosity.

Yann Tiersen

The playing of pianist Ivo Pogorelich is praised as both powerful and fragile, perfectly suited to Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata, which bursts with drama from the very first notes. Chopin’s Second Sonata also fits him seamlessly, with its famous funeral march and bizarre, fleeting finale. On Saturday, October 25, he returns to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Pogorelich first made waves at the 1980 Chopin Competition, where his elimination caused such a stir that Martha Argerich declared him a genius. His unconventional interpretations and dazzling technique still grant him a unique place in the piano world.

Multi-instrumentalist Yann Tiersen resists being placed in a musical box. His work shows affinities with the neoclassical movement, yet he himself cares little for genre boundaries. For Tiersen, there is no real separation between classical and pop. The Frenchman, performing for the first time at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on Monday, October 27, gained international fame with his soundtrack for the film classic Amélie and has since grown into a composer with a distinctive style. Tonight, in an intimate solo concert, Tiersen presents his latest project: “Rathlin From A Distance | The Liquid Hour,” blending classical piano with psychedelic electronic music.

Mindful (Grand)parenting

Mindful (grand)parenting means raising children with attention, for yourself and for your (grand)child. This method assumes that you, as a parent, know how to raise your child, but that parenting stress blocks that wisdom. Over time, the following results can be achieved: Recognition and awareness of the unique nature, temperament, and needs of the child.

• Developing the ability to listen with full attention when interacting with your children.

• Interacting with yourself and your children with more compassion and acceptance, and less judgment.

Everything about scientific fraud: from mistakes to fake conferences

Knowledge is paramount in science, or at least that’s what we tend to think. Hypotheses are tested, experiments conducted, and results published based on rational scientific methods. If something goes wrong, it’s quickly discovered and corrected; finding the truth is the ultimate goal. Stan van Pelt demonstrates in this lecture and in his new book, Sloppy Science, that reality is often much more unruly.

Unexpected, idiosyncratic, and free; Klompen moved like a locust from one discipline to another. Creative as a child, but with a vision that both stimulates and irritates. One Thought at a Time

‘I’m coming here to relax and unwind a bit,’ I said. I’d had a tough year in many ways. A need for some quiet and balance in my mind had led me to a silent retreat at the Dominican Monastery in Huissen. No busy resort or crowded airport, but simply ‘in search of Zen.’ A programme full of yoga, walking, writing, and silence seemed like a good idea.

We were asked beforehand if we wanted to delve into The Work of Byron Katie, who has many followers worldwide. Due to a lack of time, this didn’t quite work out, so I was quite open-minded when I first met the group. Looking back, I must chuckle at the word ‘relaxed’, because there was so much (hard) work to be done, especially on myself. Those were unforgettable days and certainly life changing. Sometimes life throws you punches that leave you wondering, often starting with the questions ‘How?’ and ‘Why?’, but usually don’t yield reassuring or helpful answers. You keep going around in circles, and your mood doesn’t improve. It’s often about the other person, and you remain unaffected. Even though it’s better to mind your own business, you’re meddling in someone else’s, and that’s bothering you. Until you work on yourself, on your thoughts and beliefs—the central theme of the retreat. Not easy, but in my case, good timing.

At The Work, you learn to question a thought that arises from a stressful situation. With four seemingly simple questions, you gain new insights: Is it true? Can you be absolutely certain it’s true? How do you react, what happens if you believe that thought? And finally, ask: Who would you be without the thought? After this exercise, you turn the thought around and start asking the four questions again. In silence and with your eyes closed. You descend into yourself and, above all, be honest.

When I wanted to work with my thought, I stared at my still-empty worksheet for a long time. Closing my eyes on command, and keeping them there, is difficult for me. I secretly glanced at the others. Most of them had already done so. Not naturally a follower, I did as I was asked and began the assignment: ‘Think of a situation, of the thought that arises from it. Close your eyes, take your time with the four questions. Look honestly at yourself, at your business, and complete the worksheet.’ It took me a good forty-five minutes. It felt heavy, but strangely enough, a peace came over me that I hadn’t felt in a long time. Was it the silence, the questions, the honest look? The Work sessions alternated with yoga, walking, and silence. I worked six hours a day in a monastery in Huissen, with 18 people I hadn’t known the week before, but with whom I felt a deep connection after just a few days. Last year, I would have considered this a ‘soft state’, not for me. Now I want everyone to have this experience. As the week progressed, everything seemed to become lighter. The vulnerability and honesty, but also the fun and excitement, made the week special. There was even a variety show! And the best part is... I’ve already completed a new worksheet. After all, situations and thoughts will always keep coming up.

‘At The Work, you learn to question a thought that arises from a stressful situation’

BETWEEN CULTURES : SPAIN

A dream for every creator, a reflection of Eindhoven’s Nacho Carbonell

Every time I walked past Nacho Carbonell’s studio, I wondered: is this building abandoned? Is someone inside? Why are those sculptures outside? Are they test pieces, remnants, or was it all deliberately placed there? That jumble of objects fascinated me. As if I’d landed in the middle of a post-industrial science fiction world by William Gibson. That very atmosphere characterises the entire Sectie C, an absolute must-see during Dutch Design Week.

Nacho is a well-known designer born in Spain in 1980, graduated in 2003 from Cardenal Herrera C.E.U. University before attending the Design Academy. After graduating, he gained recognition in the design world, with his 2009 Evolution collection earning a Beazley Design of the Year nomination from the London Design Museum. In 2010, a year after being named a Designer of the Future at Design Miami/Basel, he unveiled this identity, along with his style of organic forms and rough textures. His style - which shapes organic forms and rough, colorful textures - has propelled him onto the international scene of private collections and museums worldwide, such as the Groningen Museum, the 2121 Museum in Japan, Fnac-Fonds national d’art contemporain in France, MoMA San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Mint Museum. All are drawn to the uniqueness of the materials and techniques used in his works, such as his current installation at Maxxi in Rome, made with natural materials and experimental approaches.

His studio is located in Sectie C, a former factory site on the outskirts of the Tongelre district. It served as a production hub for Nolte Electrotechnical and Mechanical Industry. Starting in 1970, the site produced switchboards, lampposts, and traffic signs. Since 2007, the area has been abandoned, as the creative project developer, Rob van der Ploeg, and designer Martin Schuurmans saw the potential to transform it into a design community. Other designers and makers joined, and the number of creative entrepreneurs quickly grew. Self-reliance and self-direction are part of the mentality here. The foundation for this was laid in the early years and remains a defining characteristic of the site today. Sectie C has grown into a vibrant community with over 270 entrepreneurs, including makers and supportive companies. It fosters experimentation, ambition, and independence in an environment that encourages new ideas and collaborations, enabling residents to explore innovative paths.

And it is right here that Carbonell’s laboratory finds its home: a cyborg-punk entrance conceals a beating heart, a large, thoughtfully designed, organized, and partitioned space where he works in harmony with his team. Nacho greets me with a smile and a firm handshake, showing me the various rooms dedicated to materials and specialized treatments. A new piece is taking shape in the wood workshop - a stunning table where natural and artificial elements coexist vibrantly. Some sketches are on the wall, illustrating the creative process with Carbonell’s variations of the table as an organism evolving around the stratification of materials and textures. Once it’s ready, it will head to Miami. This is a dream space for any maker: each material is analyzed, tested, recycled, and used - a unique place, which tells a lot about Eindhoven’s DNA.

How are you feeling in this city today?

‘Many things have changed in a short time. I used to have a church to experiment in and a house rent-free; back then, Eindhoven had a ‘punk vibe.’ Now, it is returning to normal, thanks to economic forces and the influence of ASML and High Tech Campus. Many people are starting to migrate. It definitely crossed my mind to go back to Spain, but I’m still here in this moment of transition. In two years, Sectie C will be torn down and rebuilt. I’m not sure where I’ll move my studio, as space is a significant issue—both residential and otherwise—and I need a lot of space for it.’

How much does the context affect an artist’s life?

‘Eindhoven is a great incubator. I grew up with an abundance of space, but now it is lacking and becoming expensive. This forces artists to make tough choices, as they must become more commercial. It was easier for me at the beginning to take risks, but now students at the Dutch Design Academy face considerable pressure when considering how to pay their rent. The new generation has to consider how to push boundaries while making a living, which diverts a lot of their energy.’

Can you stay here?

‘This is a big question mark: I am planting, not planning. There is a fragile ecosystem around the Dutch Design Academy that needs the support of the city. It is a paradox because it is admirable how they managed to transform and redesign a town, but it was too fast, and now something is missing. There is a slight bitterness.’

Tell us about your team

‘We are a team of twenty people with diverse nationalities and backgrounds. We’re building a platform that I want to unify into our daily routine with a happy team, aiming to grow into a brighter future.’

What do you have in mind for the new edition of the Dutch Design Week?

‘I want to celebrate 20 years of collaboration by giving my studio to different coworkers for free: they will handle everything themselves. It should be fun. Some know each other personally, while others don’t. They live all over the world, from Shanghai to Milan, and it will be fascinating to bring them together under the same roof. They are organizing themselves through a WhatsApp chat, and it will be interesting to see how they manage to take over the space independently.’

What is your favorite place in Eindhoven?

‘I’m at a point in my life where I prefer staying home with my family. I don’t have an active social life, but I always enjoy visiting Ketelhuisplein in Strijp S. I remember how it all started when we had the keys to enter the Klokgebouw. Back then, Eindhoven was a lost town, and I love that a new city center has been built.’

FESTIVALS IN BRAINPORT

Scarecrow Festival Valkenswaard: Truly Different

Every two years during the autumn holidays, the Scarecrow Festival (VVF) draws a colourful parade of rarities to Valkenswaard. It’s a week full of surprises, wonder, and activities for those who enjoy a bit of a challenge. Curious about the unique open-air exhibition of around a hundred scarecrow creations and the extensive festival programme? We’ll be talking with festival director Indy van Lieshout during the preparations.

VVogelverschrikkerfestival Vogelve

an Best Park forms the backdrop, with 100 scarecrows among the trees, stages in the Spiegeltent and Tibetan tent, terraces, food trucks, and the VVF pop-up restaurant Kakelkeuken. The De Hofnar theatre also serves as a second home, with special performances for all ages. Furthermore, the entire village becomes a stage: restaurants, a market pavilion, the carillon church tower, and nature reserves are all part of the Scarecrow Festival. How do you get the whole village to participate?

‘The fact that the festival has been around for 25 years, and we organise it with a huge group of people, has created a very broad base of support,’ says Indy van Lieshout. ‘Valkenswaard is a vibrant town when it comes to events, and people love to join in. And the municipality has so much more to offer; that’s inseparable from the festival. The local theatre is a living room for the entire Valkenswaard culture, and with sustainability as a core value and the beautiful nature reserves, the walks and foraging course are a perfect match for the Scarecrow Festival.’

From traditional straw bales to digital experiments and sustainable innovations: the scarecrow proves to be a limitless canvas for inspiration. A total of one hundred scarecrows will be built by artists, villagers, and other talented individuals; the exhibition will form the heart of the festival. On Creators’ Day, these artworks will also be created live. Visitors who have reserved a pole in advance can now bring their vision to life by making their own scarecrow.

The scarecrows are very diverse. Where do the artists draw their inspiration?

‘A scarecrow is, of course, a very broad concept, coming in all shapes and colours. The medium or material used doesn’t matter. The nice thing about the exhibition is that there is competition, but it’s certainly not the dominant one. Because it’s so accessible, people quickly join in. Valkenswaard is an incredibly creative village; it’s no wonder it was

Vogelverschrikkerfestival

nominated for Event City of the Year. This is also reflected in the carnival floats and music, and the annual Corso & Culture Festival. Our festival takes place every other year, which gives the artists plenty of time to conceive and create something. It’s indeed striking how broad an audience this festival, which revolves around scarecrows, attracts. The programming is therefore exceptionally varied: art lovers and strollers, young and old, can enjoy pop, punk, Afrobeat, avant-garde, cabaret, street theatre, and film. There are workshops in tai chi, yoga, dance, and brain & body balance, beer tastings, music quizzes, nature walks, and an extensive children’s program.’

This year, Brainport also focuses on international audiences. How did you choose this mix of local and international offerings?

“Our program team scours cultural events both in the Netherlands and abroad for inspiration. We really make sure there’s something for everyone in the program. Across disciplines and genres, tastes and ages. The international aspect is, of course, also part of that. Some of the incredibly involved Valkenswaarden residents, who are deeply involved in the Eritrean or Ukrainian communities, can therefore easily involve them in the event.

Geerten Linsen is a good example.”

What criteria must the international programming meet?

‘The acts cannot be cover bands. That’s our only requirement for both national and international programming. We only book tribute acts if the music is exceptional. Precisely because cover bands fill the stages at so many events in the Netherlands, we prefer other types of culture. We also align all aspects of the festival with our core values: sustainability, surprise, connection, informality, creativity, and volunteerism. Of course, these don’t all apply to every element, but there must be some common ground.

De Wasman (The Laundry Man) meticulously washes visitors, Henry Signpainter creates unique souvenirs, and the Turbo Rope Tornado transforms skipping into a spectacle. There’s also the Broodje Poep Experience, which encourages visitors to reflect on the food cycle and sustainability.

We can safely say that Street Theatre is the absolute highlight of the festival. How do you come up with such original street theatre concepts?

‘We don’t come up with the concepts ourselves; that would be fun! As I mentioned before, we connect with many different collectives. We visit many festivals and keep lists of interesting programme components for years. We always try to find a mix of interactive, funny, sustainable, and theatrical. Especially on weekends, there’s a lot of fringe programming in the park.’

00’s Party!

for Cinnamon Roll Day

Saturday, October 4, 2025

Every year in Sweden, people celebrate this special day: Kanelbullensdag, Cinnamon Roll Day. The air is filled with the aroma of warm cinnamon and freshly baked bread. People treat colleagues, eat with friends, or pick up a roll from the bakery. The holiday has been around since 1999, when it began as a marketing idea by the Swedish Bakers’ Association. It has since become a true tradition, even outside of Sweden.

This is how you make 12 cinnamon buns!

A cinnamon roll is more than just a tasty bun. For many Swedes, it’s part of “fika” the traditional coffee break.

Sitting quietly together for a moment, drinking coffee, and sharing a cinnamon roll: it’s not just about eating, but especially about connecting and enjoying each other’s company.

Combine 500g of flour, 75g of sugar, 1 sachet of dry yeast (7g) and a pinch of salt. Add 250ml of lukewarm milk, 75g of softened butter, and 1 egg and knead into a smooth dough. Let rise for 1 hour under a cloth. Roll the dough out into a rectangle. Brush with a mixture of 75g of butter, 75g of sugar, and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon. Make sure the dough is greased all over with butter. Roll the dough and cut into 12 pieces. Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let rise for another 30 minutes. Brush with 1 beaten egg and sprinkle with pearl or granulated sugar. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in a preheated oven at 220°C (425°F).

Serve warm with coffee or tea.

This way, you can get a taste of the Swedish fika tradition!

kanelbullens dag!*

Did you know?

• In Sweden, more than 7 million cinnamon rolls are sold every year on October 4th.

• Cinnamon rolls aren’t just for adults: children often help roll and bake them too.

* Happy Cinnamon Roll Day!
