COVERIMAGE • @BRIDGE 2025 - With their mix of rock, funk and metal, hits like Cult of Personality and a rock-solid live reputation, the iconic funk metal band Living Colour is the act to see during BRIDGE. From 28 May to 1 June, Eindhoven will be buzzing with guitar energy!
There is something special about the month of May. It starts with commemoration and ends in bloom. Freedom is visible and tangible: on a stage, at a table, in the voice of a creator who tells, sings, draws or cooks what wants to be heard.
In this Eindless we meet people who speak out. Who dare to bring something new from their imagination, background or field of expertise. A new form of dialogue. a different language, a dish with mochi on Japanese Children’s Day - at the same time as our Liberation Day. You can read how our regular columnists seek each other out in an intimate duet, and how humour and literature can make you look at reality differently.
We take you to the Wonka Comedy Festival, to the Bridge Guitar Festival and Storioni, to places where children play, and musicians play for their lives. And we join you at Life-F, a Japanese restaurant in Veldhoven, where attention and craftsmanship are central. Let yourself be touched, be amazed, be quiet or loud, but do it with heart and soul. Be who you are, in full freedom. Stay on, go out. This is Eindless.

Eindhoven Airport is the gateway to the Brainport region. With direct connections to and from London, Alicante, Budapest and other destinations, the airport brings people closer together for holidays, work or family visits. What remains is that very first impression: the airport is Brabant hospitable and welcomes passengers with an organised service and good connections. This is where your journey begins. Will you join us?
‘ We regularly travel together’
Antoinette & Inge Verhagen
Age 74 & 44 years • Nationality Dutch
‘We regularly and happily visit Eindhoven. To visit our son, her brother, but also to shop and to take the plane to new cities and countries. We also go to Den Bosch, which is a nicer city, but Eindhoven has much nicer shops. Today we are going to Lisbon together to experience that city. We are going to eat and drink, and I want to visit a museum. I read about an exhibition of classic Dutch works, I don’t know exactly where this is yet, but we will certainly find out,’ says Antoinette. Inge: ‘We are going away for a few days: Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I have been there before for work and thought it was such a cool city; I want to go there more often. Now I am going together with my mother.’
Antoinette & Inge, mother and daughter, come from the Brainport region. Antoinette is retired; Inge works as a clinical psychologist in Eindhoven
‘I like to eat out and travel a lot to and from the city’
from Valencia
‘A good friend of mine moved to Eindhoven 5 months ago, I’m coming to visit him for a few days. We both lived and worked in Valencia, I still do. I’m an engineer and a real Al-freak. He went to work in Eindhoven as a scientist. It’s my first time in Eindhoven. I’ve heard that there’s a lot of tech and diversity in this region. We’re mainly going to catch up on all the technical gadgets and updates and we’re going to do fun tourist things. After a few months, my friend will probably already know the best hotspots. When I was looking into Eindhoven, I heard that there’s a UFO building: the Next Nature Museum. I think it would be fun to visit this. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it! We’ll probably also go to The Hague and Amsterdam; I’ve been there before. I wonder if I’ll still recognize it.’
Fran is an engineer, studied graphic design and has been living in Valencia, Spain for 3.5 years.
Direct connections, close to home
Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.
With an inspiring quote, Ankita Mukherjee opens the conversation with impactful people from Eindhoven. This time with Rik Verhalle, content strategist at Brainport Eindhoven and advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, known for organizing Eindhoven Pride and queer events such as Queer Salons and the Queer History Tour. Art photographer Willem Wouterse took the photo from the lookout tower Eindje van Boven, overlooking the station area and the future developments of Knoop XL.
Eindhoven is not a city that reveals itself all at once. Its beauty is subtle, tucked away in its people, its reinvention, and its collaborative spirit. For Rik Verhalle the city has become both a professional canvas and a personal compass. With spring sunshine spilling across the city and magnolias and cherry blossoms blooming amid concrete structures, we sat down to discuss Eindhoven’s quiet strength, the meaning of belonging, and the emerging possibilities of queerness—how it, too, blossoms quietly and defiantly in the most unexpected places.
Rik’s early days in Eindhoven were a bit of a fluke. He chose to study architecture, a decision influenced by a friend, which brought him to the city, where he began working part-time as a tour guide. What began as a job to make ends meet soon transformed into a calling. He recalls his time showing people around Strijp S, the onceneglected industrial area, which felt like unlocking the secrets of the city. “I had the keys to the unknown,” he says, remembering the thrill of opening doors to derelict buildings—spaces once alive with industry, now hushed, waiting for new stories to unfold.
Rik’s work at Brainport Development has deepened his appreciation for the city’s collaborative spirit, innovative mindset, and culture of openness and trust. “What resonates about Eindhoven is that there isn’t one grand landmark or historical monument that defines it—it’s about the mindset and the samen-ness, that collective commitment to doing things together,” he explains. That same grounded, handson ethos—so often summed up by Rotterdam’s Niet lullen, maar poetsen—feels just as much at home here.
Eindhoven’s journey towards inclusivity is especially close to Rik’s heart. When he first joined the local Pride movement, the city lacked a well-organised queer culture. The first Roze Zaterdag event, held a decade ago, was still in its infancy, and many in the queer community felt Eindhoven was not yet ready for a full-scale Pride celebration. People began to ask, “Why don’t we have Pride in Eindhoven?” Rik asked the same—and saw an opportunity to change that. Instead of focusing on a large event, he and a small group of others—Marion, Brendan, and Steffie-focused on building community first. They hosted queer salons—small, intimate gatherings to foster connection and trust. These sessions laid the groundwork for what would later help shape Eindhoven’s Pride. Today, with the Pride walk and increased visibility of LGBTQ+ life in the city, Rik is proud of what’s been achieved. “Eindhoven’s Pride may have started small,” he notes, “but it’s now a lasting symbol of the city’s heart, where people come together to create something meaningful.”
As Eindhoven continues to grow and evolve, it is clear that the city’s true strength lies in its ability to embrace the quiet power of community, where everyone—regardless of background or identity— can find a space to belong and contribute to the collective story.
‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.’”
Margaret Mead
From 28th May to 1st June, Eindhoven will be transformed into a true guitar paradise during the BRIDGE Guitar Festival Eindhoven. As the largest and most diverse guitar festival in the Benelux, and with a strong international appeal, BRIDGE brings together musicians, enthusiasts and creators from all corners of the world. For five days, the guitar is central in all its styles, forms and sounds. A lot precedes this. Organisation follows on from the programme, and that makes you curious: what vision do the programmers have for the festival, how do all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place? We ask Tom Ketelaar, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven Programming Manager, to explain the choices made for BRIDGE.
‘You weave the artist and orchestra together to create a programme’
When is BRIDGE a success?
‘Practical matters such as setting festival dates and desired locations, holding discussions with artists and orchestras; the first outlines for the festival are made more than a year in advance. In particular, booking big names such as Europe and Living Colour requires a long lead time. We also develop projects specifically for BRIDGE, such as this year’s concert by Dweezil Zappa with the Metropole Orchestra. Then the preparation takes a bit longer, sometimes up to two years. You weave the artist and orchestra together, as it were, and then slowly but surely arrive at a programme. Such productions are the most beautiful parts of BRIDGE, and they make the festival special and unique. BRIDGE is a success if we succeed in presenting all facets as optimally as possible, always with a view to inspiring and enthusing the audience. This means both resounding big names and surprising talent at the city festival Around Town, and ensuring synergy between the performing artists, for example at the Guitar Convention.’
What is this third edition all about?
‘This year, the focus is even more on quality and creating closer coherence between the programme components, in which participation has come to play a greater role. For the sake of quality, we have made the city festival Around Town more compact. Furthermore, this year there are more paid concerts by big international names and more workshops and masterclasses in the Guitar Convention, and there is more coherence between the convention and the concert programme. Active participation during the convention has become even more fun: the growing number of workshops by leading guitarists appeals to the imagination and up to a hundred guitarists can play together using a Guitarcube.
A technological feat that we are proud of! It is important for BRIDGE that the festival appeals to a wide audience. Specific enthusiasts of the acts and guitar freaks, but also young people and students. Everyone can attend the festival in an accessible way.’
What are the programme lines and why?
‘Bridge has several pillars, roughly divided into the concerts for which you need a ticket, the free city festival Around Town, the Guitar Convention and specials, such as the Guitar Spectacle with the Dutch Youth Guitar Orchestra and a metal masterclass at the TU/e. But everything revolves
around that one string instrument. The guitar is the instrument of diversity, the instrument that resonates with everyone somewhere. That is also what we want to show. We do not only opt for the obvious heavy guitar work but instead seek breadth. The guitar, or variants of the instrument, is played all over the world and you can see that at BRIDGE. Take Tinariwen for example, on Sunday 1st June in the Effenaar main hall. They are the kings of African desert blues. Or the band Al-Qasar that play on the Wilhelminaplein the night before: grooving guitar music with influences from Arabic psychedelics.’
‘The guitar is the instrument of diversity, the instrument that resonates with everyone somewhere’
What in this year’s line-up makes your own heart beat faster?
‘I am very proud of this year’s programme. For me personally, two parts stand out. The concert by Dweezil Zappa with the Metropole Orchestra was specially developed for the festival and is going to be incredibly cool. The icing on the cake is the Q&A with Dweezil in the Natlab, where he will tell more about the concert and the work of his father Frank Zappa. Afterwards, an excellent documentary by the Dutch director Frank Scheffer about Frank Zappa will be shown. The city programme Around Town was also very successful this year. I am very happy that we have managed to get DeWolff, the best rock band in the Netherlands, and proud of the breadth and quality of the acts that we have been able to book.’
Are there also artists involved in BRIDGE who will be in Eindhoven for a longer period of time? What can we expect from them?
‘Dweezil Zappa will be in the city for a longer period, with the aforementioned activities. You can meet him there. Classical guitarist and superstar in the making Vera Danilina will also be in Eindhoven for several days. She will give a masterclass at the convention, play with the Gitaarspektakel and give her own solo concert. Vernon Reid and Dough Wimbish, both from Living Colour, will also give a masterclass at the convention, as a prelude to their biggest concert in Eindhoven so far.’
Part of the festival are separate ticketed shows by the best guitarists in the world. You can buy a ticket per show, so you can put together your own program!
The heart of BRIDGE is formed by a selection of high-quality concerts in the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven and Effenaar, with world-class artists. Some shows are already sold out or almost full.

Lamps that branch out like a tree, glassware that lights up without electricity, glowing lines in space; APTUM creates its own world of light, and that from the city of light Eindhoven. Tineke Beunders and Nathan Wierink are together APTUM. They met at the DAE and since 2008 they have been creating daydreams together in their design laboratory.
The word APTUM means adaptable. Exactly like their custom-made lighting and lighting installations. Made with the precision and complexity for a perfect fit, like a tailor-made suit for your body. Nice detail; their workshop is located in a monumental building on the NRE site. It was the first power station in Eindhoven.

The hay fever season started early this year. Now it is said that eating one teaspoon of local honey every day can help against hay fever, because the honey then contains small amounts of pollen from your region. Every time you eat this, you get a little bit of hay fever. And that is exactly the intention. You get used to the pollen, which means your immune system will go into less overdrive. Beekeeping Het Wasven has delicious honey. The nectar (organically certified) is collected here from flowering flowers from the area. In addition to soothing your own sneezes, you also help your local bee (and beekeeper) by buying a jar. Hatsjoe!

JW Roy writes songs in English, Dutch and Brabantian. Kouwe Kermis is one of the latter genres, Brabantian. Because people hardly have CD players anymore and Spotify is a bit soulless, he wrote a book to accompany the CD. Then you have something in your hands! Eight songs and eight stories.
With Kouwe Kermis, Roy talks about old friends, the beautiful characters from his old village. He sings about the beauty that lies in small things. The everyday of the seventies, eighties. The things that were so normal then and that he can sometimes strongly long for. When Roy wrote Kouwe Kermis, he did not yet live in his beloved Kempen, but now he does. Let’s hope that he can now cash in on part of his longing. ;-)

Arjan van Raadshooven and Anieke Branderhorst started Vij5 in 2006 from a designer’s perspective. First, to be able to market their own design products, but that grew into a publisher for products by other designers. The basis is the design of functional and aesthetic design for the interior, and with this Vij5 pays tribute to the craft of the product designer. We are fans!
From their studio on the Hallenweg in Eindhoven they connect designers, makers and buyers. The design publisher collects concepts and brings them together in a collection. Then the production process begins, exclusively by professionals. Vij5 then also personally takes care of the distribution, marketing and sales of the collection.

Those who think that chamber music only belongs in a concert hall have not yet heard of the Storioni Festival. For years a permanent fixture on the Eindhoven cultural agenda, the festival, led by pianist and co-founder Bart van de Roer, is increasingly venturing into the city. This year, new forms of connection through music are emerging amongst BMX riders, sawing machines and international students.
The Storioni Trio - Bart van de Roer and Marc and Wouter Vossen - has been organizing the chamber music festival since 2007, which once started in the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. But that is no longer the only place where chamber music can be heard. ‘We want to break through the wall of the stage by going into the city,’ says Bart van de Roer. ‘Like at Piet Hein Eek, where we are in the middle of the workshop amongst the sawing machines. Each location gives a concert its own colour. That makes it exciting, for the audience and for us. Area 51 on Strijp-S, a centre for urban culture, has also been included as a programme location this year. ‘Actually, the most illogical place for a chamber music concert,’ he laughs. ‘But the amount of wood makes fantastic sounds.’
This year’s theme is connection. A theme that perfectly matches the Storioni Festival genre: chamber music. Bart: ‘Chamber music is about the interplay between the artists, without a conductor. You are jointly responsible for the performance. This equality and interaction is reflected in the way the festival is designed. In collaboration with Area 51, the Storioni Festival developed a unique programme in which classical musicians connect with urban artists such as BMX riders, dancers and spoken word performers. ‘Precisely because the worlds that come together are so far apart, the theme comes
to life most powerfully in this performance.’ And that is necessary, according to Bart: ‘I see that bubbles are created in society, in which people no longer want to be surprised. These sorts of projects break through that.’ He sees the effect up close: ‘Artists who are, for example, in spoken word and then suddenly hear classical string music. That touches me. On the other hand, it is precisely the classical musicians, who are taken along in the passions of urban artists.’
The festival invites musicians from all over the world. Some are regular guests; newcomers also get a stage. ‘We have set up a lunch concert for young and new talent. They come from all corners of the world and the excitement is there, that they suddenly play together and challenge each other during the concert. Sparks are created and you can be there.’
Varied and adventurous
Bart calls this year’s programming ‘adventurous and varied’. “There are three of us founders and each brings his own ideas. Just like a chef, you look at what should be on the menu: tapas alone is not enough, you also want a hearty dish.’ The menu is tailored to each location: ‘A traditional piece fits in a castle, in another place you want something special. Like a kind of surprise menu, in which unknown composers also get a place. Those are often pieces that people still talk about afterwards.’
‘We want to break through the stage wall by going into the city’
A new and special project this year is the English-language performance at TU/e: ‘These Are the Names’, based on the book by Tommy Wieringa. Actor Tom Hofman tells the story of refugees searching for their identity. A current theme, told entirely in the dark. ‘We did the performance itself last summer in Finland and in Dutch. Now we’ll see if we can get the people we hope to reach, internationals, into the audience. That’s exciting.’
Challenge
Although organizing a festival is financially and logistically challenging, Bart is proud of what is being achieved. ‘We visit places that are typical for Eindhoven and try to capture the identity of the city in that way. Last year we started with Area 51 as an experiment. Now it is a conscious part of our story. In this way, we continue to seek out collaborations and add new elements every year.’ Such as a musical bike ride: ‘We start at Cyklist cycling café and along the way there are short concerts at surprising locations. It suits us as a trio to keep thinking with an open mind: How can we make it even more exciting this year?’
Sit down and see what happens
For Bart van de Roer, chamber music is indispensable in the current era: ‘There is nothing more beautiful than listening to each other on stage and responding to each other. Together you create a moment that moves the audience. For the doubters, he has a clear message: ‘Come and listen. Don’t think classical music is not for me. Let yourself be surprised, that is the approach of the entire festival. Sit down and see what happens.’

NERD_FUNK seven year odyssey is a kaleidoscopic journey through the influence of social media on our visual and digital culture.by Ali Eslami & Mamali Shafahi
Self-scanners, washing machines, smart refrigerators –they promise convenience, but do they really save time? In The Cowan Paradox, artist Sjef van Beers investigates the impact of technology on our households.
In a time when the focus is often on the future, Francine Claassen wants to look back at the rich history that has shaped us. Which lines connect us to the past? Which seeds of inspiration were planted there?
Francine connects the powerful movements of the expressionist dancer Mary Wigman from the 1920s with our modern times. Together with the dance school of Ana Euson in T56 and masks made by children from group 7 of the primary school Wereldkidz in Maarsen, a work of art is being worked on, in which movements are visually translated into a 3D collage of texts, photos and drawings. The children have made a dance line game with charcoal on the ‘Heksentanz’ by Mary Wigman. These lines are still present in the mask and merge with the oriental dance into a spatial sketchbook. During the residency period, the work evolves daily and can be viewed through the gallery window until May 9. An installation form of this research will be on display from May 17 to June 15, 2025, at Kunstvereniging Kunstliefde in Utrecht: ‘Eight conversations. Female artists in perspective’.
‘Tomorrow is shaped by today’s students’
From the beginning of May, Kazerne Foundation will present the ten Kazerne Design Award 2025 nominees: Katharina Ammann, Lilou Angelrath & Réiltín O’Hagan, Kiki Astner, Dana Elmi, Kasia Łukaszuk, Céleste Muir, Jules Péan, Lotte Schoots, Antonia Schreiber, Ieva Valule. All are recent Design Academy Eindhoven Alumni. With thanks to Rotaryclub Soeterbeek. In addition, the Back to the Flax students will show the next step in their project, and until the end of May you will find Contempo Gallery in the former stables with the solo exhibition of drawings and sculptures by Sjef Voets. You can experience the beautiful works, smart concepts and future scenarios for yourself here. You can also eat (on the wonderful Is-this-Paris?-No-this-is Eindhoven terrace!), have a drink or even sleep. Be inspired.
Feel At Home. There are places close to your heart that make you feel at home. Extraordinary, rare, and essential spaces where you can indulge yourself now and then. For me, one of these in our area is F life. If you ask me where I like to take my friends to eat and spend a moment of happiness and satisfaction with all the senses, the answer is undoubtedly this. Here, I feel loved, served, and pampered. Every time, this fantastic kawaii Japanese couple welcomes me with a giant smile. It’s not just about eating welland here, believe me, you eat very well - but about feeling at ease among colorful plates, cutlery design, and urban art hanging on the walls, such as JR o Bansky.
Cultural differences don’t just present challenges - they also inspire fresh perspectives and creativity. In Between Cultures, Eindhoven-based entrepreneurs share what it’s like to live, work, and create between worlds.
Can you explain the name F Life?
The names are taken from the first letters of our favorite English words, such as food, future, fun, furniture, etc. The restaurant in Japan has the same name and concept.
Komi, please tell us your story.
We met in Tokyo. Dai is from Kagawa Prefecture, and I am from Aichi Prefecture. When we were younger, we both worked in the apparel industry. Before becoming a designer, he was a pattern maker, while I worked as a clothing seller. After that, Dai founded an apparel design company, where we collaborated with various designers. Since we love food, art, and furniture, we moved to Kagawa Prefecture to open F LIFE in the region that hosts the contemporary art festival Setouchi Triennale every three years, aiming to revitalize the Seto Inland Sea area, which has faced depopulation in recent years and long-standing environmental degradation due to illegal industrial waste-dumping practices during the 1970s, following rapid industrialization in the area. There, we ran our restaurant for about seven years.
Why did you decide to move here?
Eindhoven is a city focused on design and technology. It is home to a Design Academy, and the Dutch Design Week takes place annually. Designers who graduate from the academy live here, and new talents also emerge. No other city promotes design in this way. After much discussion, we have decided to relocate and continue operating F LIFE.
What kind of customers come to your restaurant?
People from various countries, including the Netherlands, come to F LIFE. We feel pleased and fulfilled every day.
Why did you choose to offer a vegan menu?
We have grown increasingly concerned about environmental issues, animal welfare, and contemporary health matters, so we have started opting for organic foods. Embracing a vegan diet is very important to us.
What ingredients are never missing in your kitchen?
Miso and soy sauce are fermented plant-based foods that are always found in our kitchens.
What local products do you love the most?
Cheese and vegetables.
You have a great passion for art and design. Are there any local artists or designers that you particularly like?
We have met many designers so far, but Maarten Baptist and Noon Passama’s designs are amazing.
What do you miss most about Japan?
Family and friends. However, with the advancement of technology, we can communicate online, so we don’t feel that way as much anymore.
Do you have any future projects in the pipeline?
We are interested in culture, design, art, fashion, and lifestyle. The future is yet to be decided.
‘Our favourit English words are: food, future, fun, furniture. F Life!’
‘No city promotes design quite like Eindhoven does’
Japan has recently emerged as a highly sought-after travel destination. In 2024, the country welcomed a record-breaking 36.9 million international visitors, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Surveys indicate that Japan is the country travelers most wish to revisit, drawn by its diverse food scene, rich culture, and unique natural landscapes. Europeans have long held a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, a phenomenon rooted in historical, artistic, and modern influences. In the late 19th century, after Japan reopened to foreign trade, European artists were captivated by the art forms, particularly ukiyo-e woodblock prints. This fascination sparked the “Japonisme” movement, profoundly impacting artists like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, who integrated Japanese aesthetics into their works. The mutual appreciation between European and Japanese cultures arises from contrasts and shared values. While their artistic expressions differ, both cultures highly emphasize art, tradition, and innovation. This blend of familiarity and exoticism keeps drawing Europeans toward Japanese culture, fostering a dynamic cultural exchange that enriches both societies.
What happens when you step out of your own bubble? Burst your Bubble brings together Eindhoven Internationals and locals. Eindless collects the stories that emerge from this. This time the Els van Loon’s personal experience: ‘When I first entered the Ilse Wouters Academy two years ago, I knew immediately: this is no ordinary evening. There was excitement in the air, a cheerful bustle. There was a lot of discussion going on at long tables, there was laughter at the bar, and somewhere in the room there was a huge swing. Yes, really. And that immediately felt good: playful, warm, a bit quirky.’
What struck me most that first time was that nothing was fixed. No strict programme that was read out, no order that you had to follow as a participant. No, you had to find your own way. And I found that, to be honest, quite exciting. Exciting, but also liberating. As if someone was telling me: ‘You are allowed to be here. In your own way. We are interested in you.’
When I arrived, I was given a balloon. A blue one, because I was new to Eindhoven. People who had been living here longer were given a red one. That simple difference was the beginning of something bigger: a search for connection, beyond differences. And that happened in the most unexpected ways. You formed duos by putting on the same hat or glasses and having your picture taken together. Or you walked together under a rain of bubbles, a moment that will always stay with me. As if you literally stepped through a magical veil, into a new world.
The awkwardness in theatrical play was painfully recognisable. Two people, a local and a newcomer, were struggling on stage with an awkward conversation. The great thing: you were allowed to interrupt the play and join in yourself, to try a new direction. It felt like we were practicing together. in being human. In misunderstandings. In really listening. I have often had the feeling, especially when I was new somewhere, that people are quick to judge. That they put you in a box before you have had a chance to say a word. Maybe that is also because of my disability. But here, at Burst your Bubble, the opposite happened. People saw me. Steiden asked, listened.
Not knowing what awaits you makes you vulnerable. But also awake. With every step I asked myself, what are we going to do now? Can I do this? Do I want this? But every time I turned out not to be alone. Everyone was challenged, everyone doubted sometimes. And that is exactly what made it so valuable. Together we stood at the beginning of something new. Not as spectators, but as creators of our own experience.
At the end of the evening, you burst your balloon. Literally, burst your bubble. It is a small gesture, but it sticks. Because with it you are saying: I want to open myself up. To the other, to the unknown, to connection. When I get home, I often lie there thinking. About the people I spoke to. About what I felt. Sometimes I go home with more questions than I came with - but always with a warm heart and a head full of impressions. And every time I think: next time I will be there again. Be welcome. You will be seen.
Burst your Bubble is a Jump Movement Foundation scheme developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is an Uit in Eindhoven Foundation publication. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome.
She is a community builder and librarian in Woensel, she is the director of a language institute. Both columnists in Eindless. In this duo column, Loubna Bakra and Mathilde Lageman seek each other out. From their different backgrounds, they enter a conversation about what affects them. Where do they find each other, where does it rub together? A dialogue about living together, language and empathy.
‘I now want to take up the gauntlet myself and have this conversation with you’
I enjoyed reading your April column on recent foreign news: ‘Can football players come out of the closet without fear of hate speech and threats?’ As your column progressed, I noticed that I was triggered by the words you used. It would be easy to draw conclusions from this or to remain indignant, but this is exactly what happens in our polarized world. People quickly draw conclusions and judge others. If I do not behave differently in relation to your column, am I not perpetuating the same polarization?
As a fellow Eindless columnist, I can easily reach you via this platform. My first column was entitled ‘Grinding conversations’. I now want to take up the gauntlet myself, enter this conversation with you and ask you several questions. Not to put you on the spot, but to learn to ask questions myself and to better understand the perspective of the other person, you. Do you think that is okay? You write: ‘I continue to be raised as a Dutch person and grew up in a free country...’ Why do you say this so explicitly? Why do you emphasize your Dutch identity and your upbringing in this country? I was raised and grew up in the same country, and I still remember very well how my Dutch best friend from my childhood was always beaten up and verbally devastated daily by Dutch boys because of his homosexuality. Legal freedom and social freedom are therefore two realities side by side for me. How do you see this?
You also describe the foreign students you deal with in your work, including those who fled because of their sexual orientation. You ask whether these students and other homosexuals in the Netherlands can walk hand in hand. A fair question! But then you write: ‘But with so many different cultures and religions, there is still a mountain of work to be done.’
To me this seems like you are blaming foreign cultures and religions for the increased intolerance of homosexuality in the Netherlands. Why are you linking cultures and religions to the increased intolerance, as if there is a direct connection and they alone are responsible? Aren’t Dutch people intolerant of homosexuals? And who should do what work? For me, homophobia can be perfectly well named without referring to foreign countries or other cultures and religions. If that does happen, as in your column, it is also about me. I am aware that my background and glasses determine how I interpret something. That is how image formation works. People come to different interpretations from different perspectives, we apparently live in parallel worlds. But if we leave it at that, we would be doing the polarization that you rightly mention an injustice and many polarized people would remain out of sight. Just like people who, regardless of cultural and religious background, may be allies. Despite external differences, people can still have a lot in common. By having this conversation, we can create common ground from our parallel worlds. As you put it so beautifully: ‘let’s embrace new cultures’.
WARM GREETINGS, LOUBNA BAKRA

‘Free’ is a very subjective concept and not the same for everyone’
When I read your letter, I put it aside for a moment. I found it tough. After reading it a second time, I understood it better. My choice of words evoked something in you. Let me explain why I use certain words, and why I want to use them.
I speak of a ‘free country’ because I often experience our country that way. Certainly, when I compare the Netherlands with other countries and yes, indeed from my own perspective: a white, highly educated woman who grew up in a stable single-parent family, is financially independent and has been doing reasonably well in terms of career. I have not often felt restricted or limited in my freedom. As a woman, I also do not feel inferior to my male fellow countrymen, perhaps because I was raised by a single mother, who was very emancipated for her time and taught my sister and me to be independent and to stand up for ourselves. Growing up in the Netherlands meant ‘being free’ to me, and feeling free. I realize all too well that this is not always the case for others. I have two children who are ‘foreign’ due to adoption from a South American country. Discrimination was especially common during school years. Only when it was seen that my son and I belonged together, could he move freely in a store and was no longer watched. Digital bullying with very hurtful comments to my daughter about her skin colour and her background were not the exception but the rule. ‘Free’ is therefore a very subjective concept and not the same for everyone. As for my remark about ‘different cultures that are less accepting of homosexuality’ you certainly have a point. But I do want to take a broader view. I am referring to my own environment and that includes our language school where about eighty nationalities come together and learn. It is a given that in some cultures and religions homosexuality is not exactly accepted. Why should I not be allowed to say this? Of course, I could have kept it general and stated that for many people, or football players, or high school students, homosexuality is still an issue. That is true. But in my opinion religion and culture often play a role in acceptance around this subject. This is not a reproach or a question of guilt, but an observation that I can make based on my years of daily experiences and therefore want to consciously state. The point is: what do we do with it? Do we have a conversation with each other, even if our cultural and religious ideas differ? Just like you, I think we should do that. In that sense, I think there is still a lot of work to be done, by all of us. The fact that you and I are both thinking about it now, me on one thing, you on the other, can already result in a whole new exploration and realization.

Kodomo no Hi is a national holiday in Japan that celebrates the strength, health and future of children. In the Netherlands, where a lively Japanese community lives and works, colourful Koinobori - carp flags - fly from houses and balconies on 5 May. The carp symbolizes perseverance and zest for life, because it swims against the current.
Children’s Day falls on the same day as our Liberation Day. Two celebrations of freedom, resilience and a new generation. In many Japanese households, Kashiwa Mochi are served: rice cakes filled with sweet red bean paste, wrapped in an oak leaf.
(for ±10 pieces)
200 g mochiko
(glutinous rice flour, available at toko)
150 ml water
Kodomo no Hi omedetou gozaimasu!
(Happy Children’s Day!)
2 tablespoons sugar200 g anko (sweet red bean paste)
10 oak or other edible leaves
(e.g. grape leaves or banana leaves)
How to make it
Mix mochiko, sugar and water into a smooth batter.
Steam this mixture for 15 minutes in a bowl or steamer basket.
Then knead it with wet hands until it is smooth & elastic.
Divide into 10 balls. Flatten each ball and fill with a spoonful of anko. Fold closed into a half-moon.
Wrap each mochi in a leaf. Serve the mochi at room temperature. The leaves only provide aroma and symbolism, so you don’t eat them!
