Between Worlds
There are days that don’t quite belong to a year.
Time that falls in between: between old and new, between silence and sound, between hope and reality. Perhaps we all live in such an in-between time. Politics between formations, worlds between war and armistice, people between words they can or can’t say anymore. It’s a time when silence can be heavy, but also a time when listening becomes meaningful.
This edition of Eindless is about that in-between space: where softness and sharpness meet. About listening without disappearing. About speaking without shouting over people. From the dreamy stillness of a silent film to the spoken word, music, poetry, and shifting narratives of the Lazy Listeners Festival
From the hopeful initiatives of Together We Care - Fontys for Good to the compelling power of exhibitions by Charlotte Schleiffert or Jelle Jeurissen, who hold up mirrors to the world with colour and confrontation. Everywhere applies: come as you are, just bring yourself.
Silence conceals not only absence, but also attention.
Perhaps what we need most now is collective breath. A moment to listen to what moves beneath the noise: care, resistance, connection. Between worlds, between years, between people. That’s where we find meaning. On behalf of the entire Eindless Magazine editorial team, I wish for you that, in 2026, time will be fully present and filled just right. Happy New Year!

Eindhoven Airport is the gateway to the Brainport region. With direct connections to and from London, Alicante, Budapest, and other destinations, the airport brings people closer together for holidays, work, or visiting family. What remains is that first impression: the airport exudes Brabant hospitality and welcomes passengers with organised service and excellent connections. This is where your journey begins. Departure to Vilnius, Lithuania

Age 39 • Nationality: Turkish
“I’m going to Lithuania for eight days to visit family. My wife and parents are also travelling there; we’re visiting my brother and sisterin-law. I’m really looking forward to seeing them all again. I’ve been living in Zandvoort for eight months. I owned two restaurants in Turkey which I, unfortunately, had to close. I was imprisoned in Turkey for political reasons. I’m glad I got a residency permit in the Netherlands. I’m also learning to speak Dutch now, via YouTube. My wife is a nurse and hopefully she can come to visit me soon. This is my first time at Eindhoven Airport. I’m flying into Vilnius, and it’s a good connection. I have a friend in Eindhoven and a friend in Tilburg, both of whom I’ve visited. But I’ve been to Tilburg more often than Eindhoven; I haven’t really seen the city here yet. I also sometimes go to Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam. But I prefer Zandvoort. There’s the sea, which I really enjoy.”

Arrival from Faro, Portugal
Danique en Gerianne
Age Both 20 • Nationality: Dutch
“We’ve been friends since high school, about eight years,” says Gerianne. “But funnily enough, we didn’t really hang out much back then. Our real friendship came later. Since then, we’ve travelled together regularly, and it works well!” “Let me just pull out our list,” says Danique. “Otherwise, we forget everything we’ve done. On the first day in Faro, we went shopping and relaxed.
On the second day, we explored Lagos and had a wonderful swim. On day three, we went into town, and day four consisted of canoeing and eating out. Day five, we rented a scooter to ride to a beautiful lake. Oh, and we also went horse riding; that’s become a tradition when we go on holiday together. And then it was over.” We occasionally visit Eindhoven, for example, to the Pathé cinema. But if we really want to shop, we’d rather choose ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Danique works at a fish stall, and Gerrianne has just started her education and work in healthcare. They regularly travel together. They enjoy a nice cup of coffee before going their separate ways.
Eindhoven Airport has 7 million passengers per year, which is an average of more than 18,000 arriving and departing people every day. 53% of them travel on a holiday or a city trip, 33% visit family and/or friends and 14% make a business trip. However short their visit may be the airport strengthens the growth of the region for settling, for living and working, and in economic terms.
Curator Haiko Sleumer’s Women as Guardians of Freedom
Charlotte Schleiffert’s exhibition at Museum W brings together many recent drawings and paintings. The title, When Freedom Fails, taken from one of the works, puts its finger on the sore spot. Freedom is not a given, but something that must be fought for repeatedly. Schleiffert’s work shows how quickly rights can crumble. “I want us to feel that. To not look away, but to engage in conversation,” says museum curator Haiko Sleumer.
The curator
... and his exhibition
“Every time I walk past Charlotte Schleiffert’s works, I feel that this is no ordinary exhibition. When Freedom Fails is a warning, but also an act of resistance. Schleiffert shows what happens when we’re not paying attention for a moment: it slips away ― freedom, autonomy, equality, and justice. She works with existing magazine images, which she completely manipulates. A photo of a little girl becomes a grown woman, larger than the men around her. The fact that we are witnessing a circumcision performed by men immediately takes on a different meaning.
The artist turns it around: she makes women dominant. The works are bright, colourful, and almost childishly rich, but always precise. Naive, yet also menacing, grim. That contrast touches me. Refugees trying to cross the Atlantic, with exaggerations of the stereotypical images we know. Or the work that refers to the mountain of electronic waste shipped from Europe to Ghana. To recover residual materials, people burn the waste. But it makes them sick. Schleiffert’s work is politically charged without becoming a pamphlet. You feel the anger, the compassion, the urgency. Sometimes she works with adhesive film, sometimes with paint and felt-tip pen; collagelike, raw, and precise. But always clear and with a message. Her women wear masks, are gatekeepers who guard the world. We see a feathered Lady Gaga as a contemporary icon. And running through everything is the conviction that nature is the only thing we need to save.” “If we ruin that too,” says Schleiffert, “we’re truly lost.”
“Schleiffert shifts perspective. She even corrects our collection: exactly what contemporary art should do.”
... and the motivation for his choice
“My goal at W is clear: more women, more queer artists, more voices that broaden perspectives. Schleiffert fits perfectly into that. Her visual language of femininity and nature reveals forces we must take seriously, and I wanted to show them. Dragonflies, insects, beetles, monitor lizards, and mythical figures are not decorations for her, but messengers. They expose a truth that needs to be heard now: nature is our only salvation. And women are the bearers of that power.
My favourite? I think it’s Woman with Monitor Lizards on an Island. A monumental woman, lying like a goddess, covered in monitor lizards, with the colours of the sea. For me, it encapsulates what makes Schleiffert so exceptional: strength and vulnerability, humour and menace, colonialism and misogyny, all in one image.
This exhibition not only adds a new perspective to our collection: it also corrects it. Historically, museum collections have often been shaped by men; Schleiffert counters this with a powerful, inclusive and confrontational voice.”
... in his museum
“W is a historic building with a striking gold-coloured façade, in the heart of Weert. We exhibit a broad collection, from prehistoric urns to religious objects, organised around people’s existential questions. Precisely because our permanent collection is so deeply rooted in history, I consciously seek contrast in contemporary exhibitions. New voices are juxtaposed with old stories. Female and queer perspectives alongside collections that, as in many museums, have been primarily shaped by men.
I want the museum to breathe. I visit studios, work closely with artists, determine colours and texts, furnish rooms, and organise openings and tours. With a small team of five staff and forty volunteers, we are building a place that is inviting. Accessible, inclusive, and not elitist. We prefer to welcome everyone. That’s why Charlotte Schleiffert’s work fits so well here. With her radical honesty, women as guardians, and images of nature that warn and comfort, she shifts perspectives and sharpens the existing collection. Because Museum W: stands not only for Weert, but also for who, what, where, when, and why. Schleiffert’s work forces these questions back into the open. And there’s much more to come!”
Sleumer’s View
“Freedom is not something to be taken for granted. I want visitors to feel that here.”

“Charlotte
and I chose the works together, painted the galleries in matching colours, and furnished the spaces so that everything comes into its own. Her visual language is rich and multi-faceted and demands attention. I want to give her that attention and let our visitors experience it.”

Disinherited Good (Onterfd Goed)
A quiet ode to reuse, where heritage and a contemporary love of art converge.
This time of year, many of us seek out special gifts for loved ones. Buying art then becomes something personal: a way to enrich your life with a “visual journey” that gives the everyday a unique tone. Art inspires, connects, and touches, making it a gift with lasting value. With that in mind, we highlight a place where you can discover and buy art: for a good cause and at affordable prices. After all, art should be accessible to everyone. And with your purchase, you make an immediate difference. Are you already familiar with Disinherited Good? This inspiring initiative combines a love of art with social responsibility. This makes giving and receiving art even more meaningful.
Heritage with a mission
Onterfd Goed was established in 2012 as a non-profit foundation with cultural ANBI status. No one benefits personally from the sale of the “orphaned” artworks and objects: all proceeds flow back to the foundation. The money is used for operational costs and to advise heritage institutions on collection management and cultural heritage. The team consists of approximately twenty people, each contributing their expertise to strengthen the mission. The foundation does not rely on donations, but on the sale of art and objects.
A selection from the collection

At home in Eindhoven
The choice of Eindhoven was no coincidence. Onterfd Goed wanted to be close to innovators, designers, and makers: the creative core of their mission. Here, they collaborate with the next generation of heritage guardians: young professionals who are thinking about how we can preserve and pass on Dutch heritage. The location in Tongelre is a perfect fit: an inspiring place with friendly people and a surprising mix of drawings, paintings, sculptures, vintage objects, radios, and electronics. With every purchase, you give an orphaned piece of heritage a new home. This way, you not only save a unique work from oblivion but also support the museums that once managed it.
Where does all that beauty come from?
The collection has many sources. On their website, you’ll find an overview of the museums and institutions they’ve helped in recent years. Every month, they take on one or two new collections, often from museums that have had to thin out their collections or close due to budget cuts. Municipalities are also increasingly turning to them: their depots are overflowing, and many works are looking for a new home. Furthermore, companies, hospitals, and insurance companies often have large art collections, once intended for office decoration or investment, which now have no room.
Sometimes, it involves the estates of artists. Their families then inherit extensive collections that are difficult to manage. In such cases, Onterfd Goed helps preserve and relocate the works.

On how language and imagery make the city whiter than it is.
In September, I read an article in the Eindhovens Dagblad about the Kruisstraat/ Woenselse Market. It painted a picture I didn’t recognise. Everyone sees things from their own perspective, of course, but some sentences raised questions. So much so that months later, I’m writing about them anyway.
Let me start with this sentence: “Concerned residents and business owners have been raising the alarm for years, but they see little change. At least in a positive sense, because the streetscape is definitely changing. Bruna and Blokker have disappeared, and the countless eateries now define the atmosphere.”
What conclusion should I draw from this: that eateries don’t have a positive impact on the streetscape? Or does the author mean that the change is negative because they are different, foreign businesses? As most Eindhoven residents know, the Kruisstraat/Woenselse Market is indeed mainly populated by foreign eateries. Is that what’s bothering me ― not the shops, but the people? Do we also say the same about Kleine Berg: “A whole lot of the same kinds of shops and people together. That can’t be good!”? Or does the journalist simply feel at home there because they’re more like his kind?
The municipality’s response also made me frown. It said they want to investigate how the town centre and shopping area can better connect with Kruisstraat/ Woenselse Market, so they can benefit from the crowds. But does the municipality realise that this area already has a huge appeal? Visitors come from surrounding provinces, Germany, and Belgium. Kruisstraat and Woenselse Market are unique: for something similar, you have to go to Utrecht, Rotterdam, or Antwerp. If you want to increase the appeal, start by recognising the differences, and don’t confuse one kebab with another. Then you’ll know better what to promote. That these differences aren’t always recognised is evident in this sentence: “The business,” here referring to Restobar SuperMarkt, “offers something different than the döner kebab that’s widely available on the street.” According to the municipality, this is a great example of an improvement for the street.
An improvement for whom? I like to go to Restobar SuperMarkt, but honestly, I don’t have to leave my neighborhood for a cappuccino with oat milk. In WoenselWest alone, there are at least seven places where I can get one. You can find these kinds of places everywhere. Yet, the municipality sees this as an improvement. Apparently because “the other places” only sell kebabs. But does the official know the differences? Syrian shawarma, for example, is nothing like Turkish döner. The headline of the article used the word “money laundering”. When I read that, I wondered what form of money laundering we are talking about? Does it refer to illegal activities, or is it a metaphor for what people would most like to do with this area?
I understand that some eateries offer a surprising experience. I recently ate there with a friend. Upon arrival, we were given muhammara, flatbread, and a bottle of water. The food was delicious. But above all, the experience was different, and therefore unique. Neon lights on the wall, body mist on every table, and music ranging from rippling classical Arabic melodies to hard techno. A bit odd perhaps, but the atmosphere was good, the service friendly, and the price was reasonable. Later, when I thought about the purpose of that body mist, I had to laugh. Perhaps that’s the charm of Kruisstraat and Woensel Market: you escape the predictability of cappuccino with oat milk. You’re surprised by the smells, colours, and sounds, and by the people who also make Eindhoven what it is.
Want a different experience in your own city? You don’t have to take a plane. Go to Kruisstraat and Woensel Market, experience the atmosphere and the delicious food. And let me know what you did with the body mist.
If you want to increase the appeal, start by seeing the differences.

Burst your Bubble
Sometimes it’s not the big words, but the small moments that linger. For us at Burst Your Bubble, 2025 felt like a series of moments where people truly saw each other. Seeing, hearing, and acknowledging, that’s what it’s all about. Because as soon as someone feels: “I’m allowed to be here, exactly as I am,” the atmosphere shifts, peace comes, trust and from there, something new emerges: connection, movement, hope.
Space where people move naturally
For Ineke, this year confirmed what she already knew deep down: if you give people space, they will find their own way. “My mission is to create spaces where that movement can arise naturally. I call that sitting on your hands. Not directing, not pulling, but being present and trusting the process. The most beautiful thing I saw in 2025? There were moments when no one knew who the organiser was anymore. Someone new came in, and it immediately felt natural: we’re in this together. No lady or gentleman explaining what the next step is, but a carefully prepared environment where encounters grow organically. As if the city itself took a breath.”
The power of meeting each other
Kat puts it so beautifully: “I’ve seen so many eyes light up this year, felt so much warmth and in all those faces, I’ve recognized pieces of myself.” She talks about how exciting meeting strangers used to be. “I was afraid of strangers, especially men. But Burst Your Bubble has softened my spirit. Every encounter brought something new, something familiar, something that broadened my perspective. And that feeling that the other person isn’t frightening, but simply human; that has changed my life.” Working together, with so many loving and creative people, gave her confidence. “Working with Len has deepened my belief in equality. Not just as an idea, but as a daily practice. We’re building this together, with both our hearts and minds.”
For the children of tomorrow
We often think of the 20,000 children who will come to Eindhoven from all corners of the world in the coming years. We want to build a city where they feel safe, where they don’t fall between cultures. Where it’s normal for everyone to participate. That is why we continue to build bridges, especially between people who might otherwise never meet.
Moving Forward with Confidence
In 2026, Burst Your Bubble will continue to grow. We will visit nine locations throughout the city and bring our method to schools via a toolkit so teachers can use this philosophy in their classrooms.
Burst your Bubble 2025, the year that opened hearts. Ineke Hurkmans and Kat van de Camp look back and forward.

Ineke (left) is the creator of the Burst Your Bubble concept, and Kat works as art director on its creative translation. Together, they are working within Jump Movement to foster more self-organisation around this concept and other themes.
During the large Open Space, with the question “How on earth do we make Eindhoven the most inclusive city in the Netherlands?”, ideas will be put forward that will be implemented in 2026 with the support of the municipality, and above all, with each other. We conclude this year with a warm heart. We have seen, heard, and recognised people and we felt seen, heard, and recognised ourselves. That is invaluable.
With love, pride, and deep gratitude to Anna, Nienke, Mymza, Mary, Frans, Ilse, Franky, and all the Burst Your Bubble Troopers who helped build a city where we truly dared to meet each other this year. And to the municipality of Eindhoven for the partnership.
Burst your Bubble is a Jump Movement Foundation scheme developed by Ineke Hurkmans. Eindless is an Uit in Eindhoven Foundation publication. Together they let you look at the city and its inhabitants in a new way, so that you yourself see opportunities to learn more, make contacts and contribute to an inclusive city where everyone is welcome.s.

Piano Romanticism & Fairytale Worlds
Romanticist Robert Schumann created some of the most beautiful piano works. His own career as a pianist was cut short by an injury, but he inspired his wife Clara―one of the greatest pianists of her time―to create magnificent performances. Together they impressed with refined compositions, in which the interplay between orchestra and piano was always perfectly balanced. During this concert, French pianist Cédric Tiberghien will highlight two lesser-known piano concertos by Schumann. These intimate works demonstrate a subtle, refined approach to sound and melody that demands a delicate balance between orchestra and pianist―something Duncan Ward has been entrusted with. Philzuid also explores the musical legacy of Antonín Dvořák

Simon van Boxtel

‘“This way an orchestra knows exactly what a conductor means!’
Absolute silence. The eyes of every orchestra member look expectantly in the same direction, at the conductor. And then suddenly it happens, a single arm movement is enough to fill the entire concert hall with music, like a magician waving his wand to dispel the silence. It’s the power of the conductor, perhaps the most important person in the entire orchestra. Without a conductor, a performance is likely to go completely awry. But how does an orchestra know exactly what a conductor means? Muziekgebouw Eindhoven explains.
Since its opening in 1992, the largest and most renowned orchestras and conductors have found their way to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. This is partly due to the perfect acoustics in the concert halls for both audience and musicians. A key factor in creating a wonderful concert, but the conductor also plays a crucial role in how the orchestra playsit’s at least as important as how well the orchestra members play their instruments! An orchestra is quite similar to an Olympic rowing team. The orchestra members are the rowers, and each of them masters the technique needed to win the gold medal. However, if every rower goes their own way after the starting gun, it becomes difficult to get the boat across the finish line. That’s why a coxswain is so important: someone who doesn’t row themselves, but who sets the direction and rhythm from the stern of the boat. This way, the boat heads straight for the finish, and everyone rows precisely when they need to. In a sense, a conductor does the same for an orchestra.
Baton
The conductor’s most important tool is the baton, the small stick they wave back and forth. It acts as an extension of the arm, making the conductor’s movements more visible to all members of the orchestra. That’s why most batons are light-colored; this contrasts well with the black suits often worn by conductors and orchestra members.
Yet, it wasn’t always a subtle and elegant baton. In the 17th century, when Baroque music was at its peak, the conductor often used a large, heavy staff, pounding the rhythm on a wooden floor. Audible and visible, but also rather clumsy. And clumsy it certainly was, as the story of composer Jean-Baptiste Lully demonstrates. While conducting a piece in honour of the King in 1687, he accidentally stomped hard on his own toe. The wound became infected, but Lully refused amputation. Thus, he is most likely the first and last person to die because of conducting.
Tempo
But how exactly is a baton used? The conductor doesn’t just wave their arms. The right arm indicates the rhythm. For a 4/4 time signature, for example, that rhythm looks like this: the baton down indicates the first beat. Then the conductor moves to the left for the second beat, and then to the right for the third. Finally, the baton returns to the upper point for the fourth beat. This repeats for the duration of the piece. If the orchestra plays in a different rhythm, the movements naturally change as well.
The faster the conductor makes these movements, the faster the piece is played. However, it indicates not only the tempo but also the playing style. If the conductor moves the baton smoothly and elegantly, the orchestra will play the notes beautifully together.

"“The right hand continues to beat the rhythm, and the left hand is free for all other cues"
Short, stiff movements? Then the music sounds staccato. And so the grandeur of the movements also influences the playing. If the conductor uses large strokes, the orchestra will play loudly and majestically, while small strokes make the music whisper-soft.
The left hand reinforces the atmosphere the conductor wants to achieve but is also used to indicate entrances. For example, by indicating when an orchestra member should play. Conversely, the conductor can use the left hand to adjust the notes, for example, when the trumpets should play a little softer. In short: the right hand continues to beat the rhythm, and the left hand is free for all other instructions.
Practice makes perfect
Of course, it’s not just the conductor’s movements that make an orchestra shine during a concert. Most of the work happens in the lead-up to the concert. During rehearsals, the conductor clearly explains how they want the piece to sound. This way, a few simple instructions from the conductor are enough for the orchestra during the final concert. You could say that an orchestra’s success also depends partly on the conductor’s musical choices. One thing is certain, the conductors at the helm at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven know their stuff!
This season, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven will once again host world-renowned orchestras and conductors:

New Year’s Concert
Philzuid is festively ringing in the brand-new 2026 with danceable music from all corners of the globe. A varied program will take you on a journey. From Chopin to Dvořak and from Copland to Khachaturian: this evening offers a rich palette of styles and melodies. Be surprised by musical worlds ranging from ABBA’s worldwide hit (Dancing Queen!) to classics like Márquez’s Danzon No. 2. Philzuid is pulling out all the stops under the leadership of conductor John Axelrod. No New Year’s concert is complete without a special guest. That’s why Philzuid is giving its own solo clarinetist, Jules Baeten, a dazzling performance in Copland’s Clarinet Concerto. This concert is the perfect, versatile start to the new year.

Happy New Year ABBA Revival
ABBA Revival takes the audience on a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of disco when ABBA ruled the dance floors! A guaranteed party experience with dazzling costumes, meticulous choreography, and musicianship. The award-winning ABBA Tribute Band Revival has been voted the UK’s official number one ABBA tribute act multiple times by the Agent’s Association of Great Britain.

Are you curious about what an orchestral rehearsal entails? Or what does a conductor say to the musicians? What do they work on during rehearsal? Then visit a Philzuid open rehearsal and experience the interaction between conductor and orchestra! Several times a year, the orchestra opens its doors for public rehearsal. You’ll witness the rehearsal process up close and hear how the concert program is rehearsed.

Pink Floyd Project Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd Project brings the undeniable sound, look, and feel of the timeless music of one of the most influential bands of all time, once again presented in a unique and grand visual spectacle and performed by a truly exceptional Dutch tribute band. A spectacular journey back in time, playing the same set list as Pink Floyd themselves 50 years ago.

MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN
Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, also known as the Tragic, demands an intense exploration of human emotion from both orchestra and conductor. It’s no wonder it’s high on chief conductor Duncan Ward’s wish list!
Together with Philzuid, he takes the audience on a profound musical journey through this impressive symphonic panorama. Mahler’s Sixth is characterized by a dark, ominous undertone, as if the composer was already anticipating the sorrow that would later afflict him. Within a year of the premiere in 1906, his daughter died, and he himself was diagnosed with heart disease. Yet, this work also offers moments of solace and hope, Mahler’s renewed faith in life: the Andante is among his most comforting symphonic movements, full of subtle beauty and melancholic enlightenment.

Young Culture Eindhoven a breeding ground for young creative talent
Jong Cultuur Eindhoven returned with a new program in November and December. This initiative by the Cultuur Eindhoven Foundation offers young people aged 14 to 20 the opportunity to participate in cultural activities in the fields of art, music, theater, and media, free of charge and without obligation.
Young people can help build a theater production, perform on stage themselves, create and exhibit their own work, explore film and video, or learn how to make podcasts or live radio. Gion Berlijn, a young designer and musician himself, also organizes a Field Recording workshop and teaches young people how to build an audiovisual installation. There are also punk and hip-hop parties at Dynamo and an experimental youth event, Hocus Focus Festival, hosted by students from the SintLucas Media Design program. The activities are surprising and diverse. The strength of Jong Cultuur Eindhoven lies in its accessible nature. Young people can watch or participate, independently or together with others, and above all, experiment without the pressure to perform. This creates a safe and inspiring environment where creativity and self-expression are central. The full program is available online and is regularly updated with new programs and workshops. Participation is free for young people. More information about dates, locations, and activities can be found at jongcultuureindhoven.nl

Jule Jeurissen
Light of Other Worlds
For this exhibition, Jeursissen drew inspiration from the medium of light, with a particular focus on blacklight. Light creates an atmosphere, creates warmth and cold, exposes the hidden, and influences our emotions.
Blacklight is a special form of light that makes visible wavelengths that normally remain hidden from us. It also blurs the wavelengths normally visible to the human eye. This gives the artist the opportunity to experiment, to reveal something hidden.

T56 | TARWELAAN 56 A - EINDHOVEN |
Artist in residence Len Creutzburg
During his residency, Len Creutzburg will focus on creating large-scale spatial works. His starting point is his Indonesian family history, rooted in the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. He explores how trauma is passed down through generations and how healing and rewriting of identity are possible. His starting point is personal, yet it touches on the current situation, where war, displacement, and collective trauma are palpable worldwide. The work invites the viewer to reflect on the layers of our deepest being and on the traces that the past, present, and future leave in the body.

Philips Museum extends exhibition ‘Impact through Design’ due to success
Eindhoven is inextricably linked to two things: design and Philips. The exhibition ‘Impact through Design’, about the company’s design history, brings these two worlds together. After a successful initial period - including a well-attended Dutch Design Week - the Philips Museum is extending the exhibition until August 2026.
The exhibition was originally created to honor Louis Kalff, who joined Philips 100 years ago as the first head of design. Besides being an enormously influential designer (he is responsible for the classic Philips logo, among other things), he is the co-architect of the Evoluon. But the design stories of modern-day Philips are also extensively featured in this exhibition.
Sara Vincentie, Experiences & Brand Manager at the Philips Museum: “Design is much more than color, shape, and material; it’s about creating a better experience for the people who use the product.” And Philips continues to do that every day. That’s why we believe it’s important not only to exhibit Philips’ history, but also to share what we’re doing today and tomorrow to provide better healthcare for more people. This design exhibition is part of that, but so is our AI exhibition, brAlnpower, for example.
“We don’t just talk about the past, but also about today and tomorrow.”
This focus on the present resulted in a successful DDW. Sara: “Philips designers presented their work here all week and the impact of their designs on healthcare. That was a real eye-opener for many visitors. But we also presented the book ‘Philips Design: 100 Years of Impact’ to the grandchildren of Louis Kalff and Frits Philips, and almost ten thousand people visited Impact through Design and brAlnpower. For us, it is a good reason to keep both exhibitions accessible for the time being.”

The Sweet Escape
Liesbeth Bijkerk’s paintings can be seen as traces of memories. Her inspiration can be something she has seen, read, or heard. After certain things have occupied her thoughts, they become mental impressions without tangible form. Tanya Janssen’s paintings reveal the vulnerability and transience of human dominance over nature.
Open THU, FRI 12:00-18:00 SAT & SUN 12:00-17:00 More information and current opening hours: www.galerienastyalice.nl

“We believe it is important to tell not only about Philips’ history, but also about its present and future.”

BETWEEN CULTURES: ROMANIA
“How beautiful the world of Ronița Dragomir
Ronița was always creative, even as a child. She loved learning new languages and telling stories. At nineteen, she left her parents’ home in Romania. She moved from city to city until she arrived in the Netherlands in 2010, knowing she wanted to stay. And by the time she was accepted into the master’s degree programme in Literary Criticism at Utrecht University, she already knew she would pursue her future in the world of specialty coffee.
AILÉN GAMBERONI IMAGE DANNE SANTAMARIA
Where does your passion for coffee come from?
“My mother’s hands stirring ground coffee in a simmering pot, the smell of coffee in the morning as I got ready for school; I have early memories of coffee. And it always had something magical. I started drinking coffee in high school, but it wasn’t until 2015 that I discovered the world of specialty coffee, when I was working as a freelance writer for a coffee magazine in Bucharest. I visited newly opened cafés and interviewed coffee professionals and realised how little I knew about its origins and history and about how exceptionally good a cup of coffee can be. The more people I spoke to, the more I wanted to learn. I enrolled in an SCA-accredited course, took exams, and dove headfirst into the world of coffee. I’m still in the thick of it now. For me, coffee is an endless subject, always evolving. Even the best professionals continue to learn, research, and educate themselves. No one can ever say: now I know everything about coffee.”
What are your dreams?
“I’m naturally drawn to working with coffee and people, and I’ve learned that it’s okay to pursue multiple passions. I continue to love talking about coffee, writing about it, or teaching. There’s so much information available these days that it can be overwhelming. If I can show that coffee is for everyone, then I’m in the right place. Because good coffee shouldn’t be exclusive; it connects. Just like people and tastes all over the world.”
Last year you decided to open your own coffee bar.
“I had a spot in Eindhoven for a few months, and that’s how Roshu Coffee was born: a small pop-up where I could serve coffee from roasters I trust. I focused on pour-overs and was able to combine my love of filter coffee and baking. It was intense, exciting, and wonderful all at once. The adventure only lasted a few months, but it was incredibly educational. I learned a lot about myself and the direction I want to go. I’m still searching for the perfect space; the current housing situation doesn’t exactly make that easy or affordable. In the meantime, I work part-time as a Head Barista, freelance at events, and organise workshops. I want to share my passion and let others experience how beautiful the world of coffee can be. That creates a real connection, and it’s precisely those moments that give me the energy to keep going, even when I have moments of doubt.”
Is it difficult to start your own business in the Netherlands?
“Starting a company isn’t easy, especially as a foreigner. I had to research and read a lot. Besides the cultural differences, understanding the laws and regulations can be quite challenging, especially if you don’t have a broad network yet. In Romania, I have my family, friends, and their circle to rely on. Everyone there is happy to help each other. Maybe that’s why it feels easier; everything is so familiar there.”
What’s the coffee culture like in Eindhoven?
“Honestly, I expected the coffee scene in Eindhoven to be more developed. There are great coffee roasters in the Netherlands, so I was surprised that the selection here in the South is still so limited. But it strengthens my belief that opening the kind of café I envision will truly add something to the city. Luckily, there are places like Sprout and Community Square. Sprout is my favorite because of the wonderful variety of origins and because I can always count on a perfect pour-over at Carlitos. And Community Square because Esmée is the only other person I know who is as passionate about hospitality and quality as I am”.
Tell me about coffee competitions.
“They’re so much fun! I wanted to do a simple competition, just to step out of my comfort zone, and entered the Dutch Aeropress Competition in 2021. I was so nervous I barely ate or drank anything. When I heard my name after the first round, I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t make it to the semi-finals, but I had proven I could do more than I thought. I’ve always struggled with self-confidence and anxiety, so just the thought of standing on stage in front of so many professionals made my heart race. Competitions like Cup Tasters followed, and more.”
“Even the best professionals continue to learn, research, and further their knowledge. No one can ever say: now I know everything about coffee.”

SPECIALTY COFFEE
“The competitions aren’t just about who wins; they also help the coffee industry progress, at a global level. The most exceptional coffees, new processing methods, innovative equipment and routines: everything comes together on such a stage. The progress that specialty coffee has made over the past decade is partly due to these types of competitions that continue to push the boundaries of taste and craftsmanship. It’s fantastic to be a part of that.”

FONTYS FOR GOOD
‘Don’t wait until later, but make a difference
today.’
‘Mingle all the way’ Winter Festival on Campus Rachelsmolen

can we collaborate to create an inclusive winter event on the Fontys campus that isn’t just about socialising with students and colleagues, but also doing something good for the region? That’s the question the initiators posed last year. “An event like this will only happen if we just get started,” says project leader Susanne van den Wildenberg. “And it’s precisely that starting together, across the boundaries of programmes and institutions that makes this so powerful.” The first edition of Fontys for Good - Together We Care was born in six weeks, and this year we’re building on it.
Fontys for Good isn’t a private party, but a time where we join forces to make a social impact. It’s a relaxed and festive experience, because having fun and doing something good for others goes hand in hand. Every year around this time, countless charity initiatives spring up within Fontys. At the same time, the need for connections grows, especially in the dark days before Christmas. Often, the initiatives remain small-scale and within the programme itself. But what if we could bring all those small sparks together, creating one big fire that makes a difference together? “It’s important that the activities align with the needs of the region,” says Susanne. “Not just random activities, but initiatives where we truly make a difference. Not just during the event, but afterwards as well.” Think of activities around well-being, poverty reduction, sustainability, or inclusion: themes that resonate with local partners and residents. Last year, it started as a pilot. The response? Students volunteered, staff members contributed ideas, and partners joined in. This year, Fontys is expanding its reach: Mingle All the Way is an invitation to mingle with each other, with residents, and with community organisations. “We want students to meet, inspire, and be seen,” says Susanne. “This will create a vibrant campus where lasting connections are forged.”
Launching a movement
Fontys for Good is the engine of something bigger: a way to stimulate structural collaboration, across the boundaries of programmes and institutions. Collaboration between students, staff, and regional partners who are open to it. It’s not about having to but about wanting to. “It won’t stop at that one day, it will continue to flourish into the New Year,” says Susanne. “With new ideas, initiatives that continue to grow, and projects that will be permanently included on the annual agenda.” This movement started last year, and now we’re building it, supported by our board.
On 9th December, the campus will be transformed into a mini city with music, a market, a kitchen, a studio, sports and games. Students will experience that, in addition to their studies, they can also make a direct impact for themselves, for others, for the world.
Fontys for Good demonstrates the power of our community. “Making a big difference by doing small things,” the words of colleague Dana Feringa. “Doing is precisely what’s central here,” concludes Susanne. Want to cook, make music, run, donate, exhibit, or just enjoy the fun? Join us! Every contribution counts. Drop off your gloves at the Green Office, register your team for the sponsored run, bring board games for Café 040, or come and help build a campus that continues to thrive, even after 9th December Mingle all the way. Together we care.

The Fontys community is the foundation, but everyone is welcome when the Rachelsmolen Campus transforms into a vibrant winter fair on Tuesday, 9th December. From 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the site will be bustling with local residents, curious Eindhoven residents, and others who feel connected to Fontys. The sponsored walk starts at 8:00 am.
Cook to Connect & Soup Bike
In the campus kitchen, students prepare fresh soup and snacks. Outside at the winter fair, you can buy your bowl of comfort, and the proceeds will go towards a new (electric) soup bike for the Salvation Army. This way, you can fill your stomach and that of others. Want to join in the kitchen? Email forgood@fontys.nl
Winter Fair with Meaning

Open mic in the campus garden
No rock star needed. Grab the mic and make yourself heard. Singing and jamming. Here, talent gets a stage. A vibrant campus starts with courage to play.
Sponsored Run. 8:00 am - 8:00 pm
Form a team and keep the relay moving for twelve hours. We’re aiming for at least €7,000 for Serious Request (Muscles for Muscles). Want to register a team? Check the link on the Fontys website or communication channels. Make it Matter. R5

The twelve holy nights between New Year’s Eve
Between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Eve, there is a silence where the past exhales and the future still whisper. A time unmeasured by the clock. A time when the world seems to breathe between two years. In the Alpine countries, Bavaria, and Austria, they call this period the Rauhna chte, the rough nights. Twelve nights between December 21st and January 6th (Epiphany) when the year seems to stand still. The long nights call for comfort food.
Winter Dream Stew with Apple, Honey & Thyme
The Ingredients
A Ritual for Silence & Reflection
A centuries-old tradition tells how farmers in Raunächte cleansed their homes with the smoke of herbs, incense, and pine needles. Sage hung above the door, and wishes were written on notes. For twelve nights, everything revolves around letting go, dreaming, and gratitude, and the fragrant Dream Stove on New Year’s Eve symbolizes hope and warmth.
were ldsm aken &tra dities Rauhnachte
Serves 4 persons
800 g beef stewing meat (e.g., brisket) or 4 large eggplants
2 onions, coarsely chopped
2 apples (e.g., Elstar), quartered
2 tbsp honey, 200 ml dark beer or red wine
300 ml beef stock
2 sprigs thyme & 1 bay leaf
1 tsp ground cinnamon & 1 tsp mustard seeds
50 g dried apricots, chopped
Knob of butter or oil, salt & pepper
Preparation
Heat butter in a heavy saucepan. Brown the meat or eggplant on all sides. Add the onions and sauté until translucent. Stir in the honey, mustard seeds, cinnamon, and thyme. Deglaze with beer or wine, add the stock, and bay leaves. Simmer gently for 2 hours. Add the apples and apricots in the last half hour.
Season with salt and pepper. Serve with rye bread or mashed potatoes and a knob of herb butter with sage or juniper.

The Moment
Light one candle, write a wish on paper, and burn it after midnight. Let the smoke carry what words cannot. The smoke doesn’t ask for noise, but for space. Reflect on what was, be open to what is to come.
