University of Hawai’i at Manoa Campus Canopy
The existing canopy on campus is a key component of the University’s overall legacy. Originally founded as a College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts of the Territory of Hawai’i, UH planned to expand the campus and treat it as an arboretum.
Today, the campus arboretum is accredited through the Morton’s Arboretum’s Arbnet program which is a national program that recognizes exceptional collection, and facilitates collaborative scholarship and the exchange and conservation of interesting plants. It is a huge part of campus identity, and opportunity for grant funding and scholarships for students.

Commuter Campus
University of Hawai’i at Manoa is considered a commuter campus, meaning majority of students and faculty live o campus. As a result, parking and vehicular access has been prioiritized. Vehicular access is important, especially for fire and emergency access, as well as ensuring that people who use wheelchairs or have disabilities can get assistance. But there are ways to ensure emergency and ADA access that still supports a walkable and bikeable campus.
The amount of vehicular circulation can be relatively overwhelming, and has pushed itself through and into the center of campus which is a ecting pedestrian comfort and legacy plantings.
