The day Carrie discovered her husband’s shocking secrets, it felt like her world had fallen apart. But instead of giving up, she chose to fight for herself and rebuild her future. Her story highlights how even the hardest challenges can lead to growth and renewal What began as a painful experience turned into an opportunity for self-discovery and a fresh start Here’s her journey, shared to inspire anyone facing major life changes
A Shocking Discovery
When Carrie was 24 years old, she married a man she thought was her best friend They worked together, traveled together, and had what she believed was a good relationship. But one day, everything changed. She got a letter from the insurance company saying her husband had tested positive for cocaine.
“I was shocked,” Carrie said. “He grew up on a farm and didn’t even drink much. This didn’t make sense.”
Her instincts told her something wasn’t right, filling her with a sense of unease and curiosity. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the story, so she decided to investigate, driven by a mix of worry, suspicion, and the hope that she was wrong What she found was heartbreaking In her husband’s work van, she discovered evidence that he had been using drugs and cheating on her Later, he admitted in a text message that he was gay
“It was such a big surprise,” Carrie said “I didn’t see it coming at all, but I knew I couldn’t stay in the marriage.”
Carrie struggled with conflicting emotions: shock, sadness, and anger. Yet, even amidst the turmoil, she felt a glimmer of clarity. “I realized that I deserved honesty and happiness,” she said.
HERSTORY
I was born in Ottawa Ontario, Canada on a frosty November morning in 1975 I flew into this world two months prematurely, weighing a tiny three pounds I was kept in the hospital for an extra month to fatten me up to five pounds before I was allowed to go home. My mother tells me the nurses moved my incubator close to the radio because I'd kick my feet to the beat of the music.
My mother was single, which was frowned upon in the Seventies She was twenty-six at the time, and after helping to care for her ten siblings, she felt she was fully capable to raise her baby on her own She was an attractive woman; short brown hair, dimples, and wide smile She took great care of herself and me.
I have been told I was a sweet and funny child; clever and didn't sit still for very long I loved to play with my friends, and swimming in the neighborhood pool My father was not around He met my mother on a rainy Monday morning Her car was broke down, so she was hitchhiking to work; common and much safer back then He pulled up in a black shiny Pontiac GTO with a new baby in the car She felt he was harmless, so she got in Without the nerve to ask her out after the ten minute drive, he found her work number in the phone book and called her up They had a brief on and off again relationship that spanned over a year My mother tells me he was only interested in the physical perks of the relationship He was not happy to discover she was three months pregnant and disappeared
I knew very few details about my father The ones that stick out are he enjoyed muscle cars, marijuana and music (Pink Floyd and Barry White). That's it. I met him only twice. The first time, I was three years old and we pulled up to a red light beside him She gestured for him to pull over, and he hopped in our car They chatted briefly in her Oldsmobile and he stopped by later that evening I barely remember it My mom recalls that he didn't engage with me or pick me up He borrowed ten dollars from her and we didn't see him again
In the early Eighties, at the age of six, we moved across Canada to Alberta My mom heard of opportunities out west and she wanted to get away from her large and chaotic family for a while She found a job at a grocery store, and soon after, met a handsome cowboy. He was a divorced dad with two teenage daughters.
Over the years, we had some fun road trips out to the mountains and freshwater lakes for camping, skiing & sightseeing Rarely did his daughters join us as they were young adults and building their lives out on their own There was more than enough arguing and resentments between my mother and the girls as my mom was quite doting, opinionated and vocal, often overbearing and they had been on their own with their father for a few years already. My mom and step dad got married after five years of living together My mother didn't invite my step-sisters to the wedding because she believed (and was told) they would ruin her special day This decision did not create any warm fuzzies for their union Shortly after their nuptial ceremony, I mentioned to my mother's new husband with a smile, "So you're my dad now, huh?" He walked away My smile fell to the floor I felt invisible. Unheard. Confused. "I don't belong.” I thought.
There was no wedded bliss, and an already fractured blended family was now our reality Both of my step sisters had moved out to There were many arguments about whose kids were worse and who didn't say or do No more fun road trips I reverted to the basement bedroom with music as my favorite entertainment and companion I felt like an outsider; an unwelcome visitor. A third wheel. My mother and I started to get into physical fights as I became older and more defiant - her the aggressor I was becoming increasingly disrespectful and not willing to follow her rules We weren't communicating or listening to each other My parent's bickering was constant, and the tension was unbearable At fourteen, I tried to run away and ended up back in the basement a few weeks later Alone and a stranger in my own home
I NEED YOUR HELP, I NEED VOTES!
Last year the Law Society of Alberta closed down the Lawyer Referral Program. In response to this, I have been developing a legal online app where people will be able to ask a legal question (limited to family law initially) and have 3 local lawyers provide legal information to answer any question asked. The cost to ask a legal question is $5.99 and 100% of the proceeds are donated to domestic violence prevention programs through Sagesse org which is an organization committed to eradicating domestic violence
Here’s where you come in!
I have been personally funding the build of this app, but I am $25,000.00 short to finish it and have it launch with the target date of May of this year. I am in a competition for entrepreneurs at present to win $25,000 00 (exactly the amount I need to finish development) and a chance to have the app featured in Forbes Magazine In order to win this competition, I need votes! Voting is free and literally takes 30 seconds by clicking on the voting link attached to the following QR code (below).
Please help me to help Albertans receive access to legal answers at their fingertips in support of domestic violence prevention programs by voting everyday from now until April 4th, 2025

Dear Younger Self, I wish you knew this..
Dear Younger Self, I wish you knew this..
- That I love you
- That I don’t expect you to be perfect
- That you are amazing
- That you have so much to offer
I love you enough to tell you this..
- It doesn’t matter how old you are
- It doesn’t matter where you are
- It doesn’t matter how much money you have
- YOU ARE ENOUGH!
- YOUR DREAMS ARE IMPORTANT > DON’T GIVE UP
- DON’T PLAY SMALL > DON’T SETTLE
What advice would YOU give to your younger self?
Instead of beating yourself up about all:
- the choices you wish you’d made differently - the mistakes you berate yourself for making and - the failures (that were inevitable and part of learning and growing, but that you just can’t get past)…
… instead of all that, can you please be gentle, kind and compassionate, even forgiving, towards your younger self? Can you cut her some slack and consider the lessons she’s helped you learn, the paths she’s helped you blaze, the life she’s helped you create?
Ya, ok, I get it, maybe you think she could’ve done a better job*, maybe your life isn’t quite what you’d hoped or dreamed it could be But it’s not over yet right? There are still all kinds of opportunities and options available! No matter where you are or how old you are, or how much money you have THE CHOICE, as always, COMES DOWN to YOU
(Frick.. Don’t we all just hate being reminded of that? It’s always so much easier to blame ‘fate’ than to admit we have choices..)
