Ricky Coates

BFA Theatre Production, 2002

Ricky left his Wyoming birthplace to get his Acting BFA from the University of Arizona back in 2002. He traveled the country before finding home in Seattle, Washington, where he acted with Book-It Repertory Theatre, Washington Ensemble Theatre, Sound Theater Company, Wooden O, ArtsWest, and many more. He was also an active ensemble member of Pony World Theatre and theater simple. In recent years, Ricky's love for devised work pushed him to the road, and he now makes his living touring the globe with his partner Sadie, performing their original plays. Ricky's original works include TESLA EX MACHINA (a solo biography of the inventor), Calculus: the Musical! (new version adapted with Sadie Bowman and Marc Gutman), Roberta and the Moon (from a love story written by his father), and his one-man zombie trilogy, A Zombie Odyssey, Ides of Undead March, and Against a Risen Son. Marisa is a casting director who has worked in both Chicago and Los Angeles. She recently partnered with Christal Karge in Chicago and created Karge + Ross Casting. Marisa is currently casting the NBC hit series Chicago Med, the new FOX hit series The Exorcist, the NBC upcoming mid-season Chicago Justice and the FOX mid-season drama APB. Karge + Ross Casting is actively casting the new Participant Media/Focus Features film, Captive State and in the spring, they will be casting Chicago actors on the new SHOWTIME series, The Chi. When she first arrived in Chicago, Marisa was the head of casting for The Onion and all its subdivisions (clickhole.com, Onion Labs, Onion News Network). Since 2014, she has been contracted to do all the pilot searches in Chicago for both NBC and CBS Studios. Marisa is best known for her work casting How I Met Your Mother, and in 2014, she cast the spinoff pilot, How I Met Your Dad. Other TV casting endeavors include: GREEK, Chicago Med, The Goodwin Games, Tracey Ullman’s State of Union, Romantically Challenged, The Winner, We Got Next, Hollywood Residential, American Body Shop, The Showbiz Show with David Spade, and Campus Ladies.

Additional pilots include: Love is a Four Letter Word (NBC), Iceland (FOX), The Gabriels (FOX), Ace in the Hole (CBS), Single White Millionaire (CBS), Drive (FOX), and Mindy & Brenda (WB).

She has worked both alone and with Casting Director Alyson Silverberg on many of her favorite credits. Some of her feature credits include: The Virginity Hit, Snow Globe and Nic and Tristan. Some of her credits as Associate Feature Casting Director include: The Amityville Horror, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Hellboy. Marisa has also led several pilot casting searches in Chicago for Warner Brothers, CBS, ABC, 20th Century FOX and Sony.

As the co-founder of the SCOUT Chicago Festival, which is an annual comedy festival highlighting Chicago’s new talent, Marisa sees casting executives from all the major studios and networks, along with independent casting directors and agents from NYC and LA for a weekend in the summer. The free SCOUT Chicago weekend includes several diversity showcases, free tickets to existing shows, and a stand-up showcase.

Marisa is an active member of both the Casting Society of America and the Television Academy. She has served for several years on the Casting Director peer group committee for the Academy of Film and Television. Nominated three times, Marisa was the recipient of the Television Casting Director of the Year Award in 2009 (given by the Talent Manager Association). She prides herself in her knowledge and discovery of up and coming comedic talent. Marisa and her husband, Matthias, have three sons and love to travel as much as they can.

Just a few weeks ago, the UA Theatre Fund for Excellence helped make something remarkable happen.

Every year in the month of January, top industry professionals are brought to the UA School of Theatre, Film & Television from cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to audit our seniors performing in the Showcase of Talent. During fall semester, the students of the BFA Acting and Musical Theatre senior class are groomed for this monumental event.

Specific scenes, monologues, and songs are prepared and coached, pictures and resumes meticulously curated, and even personal style and dress are all guided and edited by faculty. The Showcase of Talent is then performed in front of some of the leading agents and casting directors in the business.

This past January, BFA Acting senior Cera Naccarato - playing the role of "Catherine" in tonight’s performance – was called back for her work by Casting Director, Marisa Ross. In addition to How I Met Your Mother for CBS, Marisa currently casts Chicago Med and Chicago Justice for NBC, and numerous feature film projects. Enjoying Cera’s work onstage, and after their showcase meeting, Marisa asked Cera to audition on tape for a co-star role on Chicago Justice.

Up against several professional, seasoned actresses from Los Angeles, New York and Chicago who auditioned for the role, our very own Cera booked the job! However, the story doesn’t end there! Marisa Ross happens to be a proud UA Theatre Grad herself (see her bio on our Alumni Notes page in this program)! The Theatre Fund for Excellence is covering all of Cera’s expenses to and from Chicago, making this incredible opportunity a reality for this full-time student.

DRAMATURG’S NOTES

Euclid’s Proof of the Infinitude of Primes (c. 300 BC) states that prime numbers, figures only naturally divisible by one and themselves, are endless in quantity. The smallest prime, which was likely confirmed by the ancient Greeks, contains a single digit: 2. According to the University of Tennessee at Martin, the largest known prime number was discovered by mathematicians in January of 2016, containing an impressive 22,338,618 digits. Two millennia after Euclid proved that prime numbers are infinite, Dr. Jessica Maerz UA Professor mathematicians still search for more unfathomable numbers: research assistants lose sleep; professors fill notebooks; computers whirr and hum in the dark, all seeking something they ultimately may not find. Yet, they do uncover new primes every year. The search continues – and will never cease.

The fruitless attempt to contain and quantify the infinite is distinctly human - and so is the practice of writing mathematical proofs. Proofs are not held together by numbers and facts, but with remarkably vulnerable language and reasoning. Proofs rely heavily on shared assumptions, on a mutually decided set of rules, and on the faith that others will follow and agree with what you believe to be true. However, truth is increasingly relative. Relative truth has the power to deeply divide us as individuals and communities as we continue to consider our personal opinions with finality and resolve. Auburn’s Proof illustrates the dissonance of a family’s desperate need for objective truth and the difficulty in accepting that such a thing may not be knowable.

PROFILES Hank Stratton (Director) - starred in the Broadway revival and television film adaptation of The Man Who Came to Dinner.

For three seasons he appeared in the CBS drama The Unit, in addition to recurring roles on Heroes and American Dreams. Other work includes films and guest appearances for NBC, ABC, CBS, Hallmark and HBO. His theatre work include Love’s Labour’s Lost for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the national tours of the Tony Award winning productions of Copenhagen and Cabaret, and most recently My Fair Lady for Moonlight Stage Productions. Previous Arizona Repertory Theatre work includes Born Yesterday, Reckless, This, The Man Who Came To Dinner, and co-directing The Full Monty. He recently directed The Laramie Project for the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Abigail Hackney (Costume Designer) – is a senior studying Costume Technology. This summer she plans to return to Bard College for its Summerscape Festival as a stitcher before pursuing an MA in Sustainability at ASU this fall. Special thanks to her assistant designer, Leah Mednick Foley; Hanna, Marisa, Jonny, and everyone else who made this possible. Thank you, and enjoy the show.

Jason Jamerson (Scenic Designer) – is proud to celebrate his first design here at the UA. A first-year Scenic Design graduate student, Jason hails from Virginia, but comes to Arizona by way of New York City, where he taught scenic and lighting design and worked in the theatre industry Off-Broadway and regionally for eleven years.

Sam Schwartz (Lighting Designer) – is a senior who is expecting to graduate in May 2017. Sam has spent a good portion of his life studying theatre and is excited to see where his knowledge takes him. This is his first main stage design. After graduation, Sam plans to either work for a cruise ship as a lighting technician, or go on tour with a band.

Kiara Johnson (Sound Designer) – This Arizona Repertory Theatre production of Proof is Kiara Johnson's Senior Capstone and second time designing here at the UA. Previously, she designed Reckless. Kiara thanks her family, friends, and her dog, Sherman, for all of their unconditional love and support.

Inga Kalvaitis (Technical Director) – is a senior who is pursuing a dual degree in Theatre Production with an emphasis in Technical Direction and Psychology, and a minor in Spanish. Inga is thrilled to have the opportunity to TD a production at Arizona Repertory Theatre and could not be more pleased with her Capstone, Proof.

Past UA credits include Assistant Technical Director for Epic Proportions and Reckless, and Master Carpenter for Rent and This.

Inga thanks her family, friends, and faculty for the last five years of continued support and encouragement, and extends a very large thank you to her wonderful team for their patience and enthusiasm on her first assignment as a Technical Director.

Fly Steffens (Dramaturg) - is a member of the inaugural cohort of UA's MFA in Generative Dramaturgy. Fly has taught playwriting, play analysis, and devising to students in pre-K to post-secondary schools. Fly works nationally as a dramaturg, performer and playwright.

Notable credits include: Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Playhouse on the Square (Memphis, TN), Shakespeare & Company (Lenox, MA), Spooky Action Theater (Washington, DC), Chicago Dramatists, Playwrights Foundation (San Francisco, CA), and The Drama League (NYC), among others. Brandon Rosenfeld (Stage Manager) – is very excited to be the Stage Manager for Proof at Arizona Repertory Theatre. Brandon is in his senior year in pursuit of his BFA with an emphasis in Stage Management. Proof serves as his final production at the UA. Previous UA credits include Stage Manager for Hands on a Hardbody and Assistant Stage Manager for Cabaret and The Full Monty. Most recently, Brandon stage managed world-class artists at Aspen Music Festival’s 2016 season. Brandon thanks his parents and his entire family for their support.

Rebecca Galcik (Catherine u/s) – is very excited to be in her first show at The UA understudying the role of Catherine. She is from Gilbert, AZ, and has been pursuing the arts since she was very young. Rebecca thanks Hank Stratton for this opportunity and her family for supporting her decision to follow her dreams.

Kelly Hajek (Claire) – is a sophomore BFA actor and is thrilled to be making her Arizona Repertory Theatre debut as Claire in Proof.

Some of her past roles include: Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde: The Musical, Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible and Shui Ta/ Shen Te in The Good Person of Szechuan. She is a modern dance choreographer and has been choreographing dances for the past three years. She thanks her friends, family and teachers for their support through the years, as well as Hank Stratton for this incredible opportunity.

Jaime Pla (Hal u/s) – Jaime Pla is thrilled to participate in his first Arizona Repertory Theatre production! He thanks his friends and family for their unprecedented support, and the cast and crew for their incredible work.

Anza Wiedenkeller (Claire u/s) – is a sophomore in the BFA Acting program, and is working as the understudy for the role of Claire. She thanks Hank Stratton for continuing to entrust her with opportunities to grow as a human and actor, as well as Kelly Hajek for her friendship and motivating ambition.

Alec Williams (Hal) - is a junior in the BFA Acting program, and just coming off of a twoshow semester where he was lucky enough to be in Epic Proportions and Born Yesterday. He is incredibly excited to be part of a fantastic show like Proof. He thanks Hank Stratton for his patience and support in what was a thoughroughly enjoyable rehearsal process.

David Morden (Robert) – is an Assistant Finally, he thanks the cast for constantly Professor of Voice and Movement. For motivating him with their own hard work and Arizona Repertory Theatre, he has directed immense talent.

Lend Me a Tenor and Inspecting Carol and has served as voice and/or dialect coach on Born Yesterday, Hands on a Hardbody, The Tempest, Nine and The Comedy of Errors, among others.

Locally, he is an Artistic Associate at The Rogue Theatre, where he has acted in many shows, including Hamlet (Polonius), Waiting for Godot (Pozzo), Shipwrecked! (Louis) and Jerusalem (Wesley). Nationally, he has performed at ACT Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre, and the Utah, Colorado and Seattle Shakespeare Festivals, among others. In the summer, David serves as Voice and Text Coach for Santa Cruz Shakespeare.

Internationally, he has performed and taught at Jagriti Theatre in Bangalore, India, and was a Fulbright Fellow in Amsterdam.

Cera Naccarato (Catherine) – is currently a senior at the UA, studying to receive her BFA in Acting. She was most recently seen at Arizona Repertory Theatre as Luciana in The Comedy of Errors and Ceres in The Tempest.

Last semester, she partook in the Arizona Theatre Company's internship program and performed, as well as understudied, in King Charles III. Prior to these performances, she was seen in Reckless and Othello, as well as understudied the role of Elizabeth in

Time travel has been a popular trope in lm, television and literature for over a century. Over the course of the year, we will watch science ction and fantasy ‘60s, ’70s and ‘80s - lms about time travel that will thrill you, classics from the ‘60 make you laugh, and make you think. The Widescreen Wednesdays series features not only the screening of a complete feature lm, but a lively and informative introduction to each lm by a UA professor. THE TIME MACHINE Feb 22, 2017 One of the greatest lms of science ction’s classic era, George Pal‘s adaptation of H.G. Wells’ THE TIME MACHINE has entranced audiences of all ages for over 50 years. When he learns that the Morlocks have been dragging the Eloi underground to use as food, George mounts a brave rescue. Will he ever make it back to his own time?

THEATRE POLICIES House Policies: Please turn off watch alarms, mobile phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices. Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted inside the theatre. The use of cameras or recording devices of any kind are strictly prohibited. Children five and under and strollers are not permitted inside the theatre.

Seating Policy: Productions begin on time. Generally, each theatre will open for seating 30 minutes before curtain. There is no late seating.

Refunds: Tickets are non-refundable. All ticket sales are final.

Emergency Messages: Physicians and other patrons expecting emergency calls during a performance are asked to leave their paging devices with the House Manager.

Lost and Found: Lost and found items will be reported to the Fine Arts Box Office at (520) 621-1162.
