TFTV DIRECTOR'S NOTES Welcome to the 2019-2020 ART season. This beautiful lineup of productions has been carefully and thoughtfully selected by faculty artists under the direction of Brent Gibbs, who skillfully oversaw ART for nearly two decades. Please join me in thanking Brent for the expertise and care he took in creating a living stage where Tucson audiences can experience our incredibly gifted students as they learn to share their art and craft with audiences. This 2019-2020 season ushers in a new era with Hank Stratton bringing his extensive professional experience and his powerful artistic vision to his new role as ART Artistic Director. I look forward to working with Hank and the entire faculty and staff as we work to align our training and production practices with the ever-changing contemporary world of live performance. This is also my first ART season as Director of the School of Theatre, Film & Television, and I am excited to experience the work of our student designers, actors, stage managers, and crew members this year. There is little in my life as exciting as being able to witness a next generation of young theatre artists find their feet and their artistic souls in the making of theatre. Each of this year’s productions offers a singular window into life, and each production’s window is dressed in different stylistic and storytelling approaches. Some offer lush landscapes of sound and song, some offer fullthroated characters of a contemporary world, some dazzle and pierce with witty language, and some offer a poignant and heartbreaking lens into past worlds. It feels somehow a bit of circular fate that in my first ART season, I will witness a young artist singing 'Corner of the Sky' in Pippin. If you were around Hershey, Pennsylvania in the mid-1970’s, you would have witnessed one Andy Belser singing that song with all of his teenage heart at retirement villages, Lions and Rotary club meetings, and church basements. We all start somewhere on our life journeys, and for me, Pippin somehow spoke to my young artistic soul looking for my corner of the artistic sky. ~ Andy Belser, School of Theatre, Film & Television Director

DIRECTOR'S NOTES “Join us” for an exciting evening on the ART stage. Working on Pippin has been a wonderful honor and also a challenge. We join our “Band of Players” (Ensemble) as they are prepared to present their version of Pippin’s Life and Times. We learn that Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power. In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. The original production of Pippin was Directed and Choreographed by the late, great Bob Fosse. I have always been an enormous fan of Fosse’s work and process. I find him to be truly interesting and love how stylized all of his work is, yet so incredibly diverse. It has been so interesting reading about how he created this piece and what it all meant to him. Working on our production of Pippin has been daunting at times, not only trying to honor the original work that was created, but also wanting to make our production unique and special for our students here at UA. Our “Band of Players” are truly individual performers. I have worked to develop each one of their moments on stage to be integral to the storytelling and to enhance the production overall. The Leading Player serves as our Narrator. She establishes Pippin’s world and controls many aspects of his life. Through the Leading Player, we see Pippin’s struggle that he describes as “trapped, but happy.” I think this statement is so appropriate to our students as they seek to find their unique voices and set out to make an impact in the world. Watching them explore and grow has been truly exciting. I think you will be able to identify with Pippin as he finds his way in this coming of age piece. I invite you to “join us” as we all join Pippin’s journey to be extraordinary. We have “Magic to Do” and are thrilled you are with us today. Enjoy the show! ~ Christie Kerr, Director/Choreographer
