DIRECTOR'S NOTES Working on this show has been a fantastic journey of sisterhood. On the surface, Sister Act is a whimsical journey of music and dance, but as we explore a little deeper, we’ve really discovered some great connections and themes within the show. I have always been a fan of the 1992 film of Sister Act. I remember that my high school best friend and I had made plans together to see the movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Dame Maggie Smith. We had both just returned home to Colorado for the summer and were ready to catch up on everything in our college lives. I am still a bit sentimental remembering her blue Chrysler, my perm, and our shared opinion that Whoopi Goldberg was even better as a singing nun in this film, than in her Oscar-winning turn in Ghost a few years earlier. Our bond has grown like that through the years. We are devoted to each other through thick and thin. While we may not agree on everything, I am the first to stand and fight with her, support and cheer her – because she is family to me. Working on this high energy musical adaptation of Sister Act here at A.R.T. (not seen on Broadway until 2011) has been wonderful. Once again, I’m back on a journey of sisterhood. In general, Sister Act is a sweet and quirky story and fairly representative of so many fish-out-of-water comedies of the 1990s. And while films like Sister Act or Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit could be a bit thin at times, they were meant to be light and entertaining. But if you do explore a little deeper, you’ll discover great interconnected themes within the stories. Even with the setting of the musical in 1970’s Philadelphia, versus the contemporary movies, the chaos Deloris’ arrival brings enables us to begin to see her wave of influence that must follow as well. She arrives as a loud, colorful, irreverent lounge singer and leaves a more confident, spiritual and connected woman. The nuns teach her to love and trust in herself and each other. A true sisterhood is developed among all the sisters. Deloris demands that joy and light come back into all their lives, including her own. Because of Deloris’ connection with Sister Mary Robert, Sister Mary Robert begins to think for herself and question the notion of following faith and religion blindly. Of course, all of this is created through dynamic musical numbers, fantastically colorful costumes, beautiful sets, and dazzling lights. But it doesn't end there. Our Artistic Team is also a true “sister act." Having women as Director/Choreographer, Musical Director/Conductor, both Lighting and Props design, as well as everyone in Stage and Production Management has given a dynamic energy to the process. The true beauty of having some male design colleagues as full part of the “sisterhood” of the show has only focused the compelling perspective and history of the piece. Like a powerful ray of light diffracted through a stained glass window, we are all different parts and shades of a whole, and yet what is experienced is a synergy that makes every one of those parts greater, together. It has been a truly memorable experience. I hope you enjoy the show and “spread the love around” to everyone you know!

~ Christie Kerr, Director & Choreographer

THE

STUDIO SERIES 2018-2019 Season The Studio Series is dedicated to supporting original, contemporary, and experimental performance through a bare essentials production model with the primary focus on the artistic and intellectual labor of the theatre students. The Studio Series focuses on collaboration, innovation, and process rather than product. Performances are immediate, rough, and presented as the creative result of the process. It is a community-centered, people-generated approach to performance that provides creative learning opportunities for student artists, thought-provoking experiences for audiences, and occasions for productive dialogue around topics relevant to diverse populations both locally and globally.

Please Note: Studio Series Performances are NOT for children
