DIRECTOR'S NOTES Like Heaven represents an important project for the Arizona Repertory Theatre. It is the first time since we opened the Tornabene Theatre almost two decades ago, with two original scripts, that we will have the opportunity to produce a new work in conjunction with the playwright. The process of working with a writer of Elaine Romero's status has been an incredible opportunity for our students. It has been a wonderfully rich experience with many hard-won insights as we try to find a voice for each of these characters. In many ways this is the same struggle that each of the characters in Like Heaven are engaged in. Everyone in this play is struggling to find their authentic voice rather than the ones they grew up being told they should use. Finding one's voice involves facing hard-won truths and charting one’s own path and each character approaches these incredibly difficult goals in their own way. The journey is not always clean and it often involves facing difficult truths about both ourselves and others but if we are able to have the courage to speak our truth in our own voices the insights we discover are more than worth it.

~ Brent Gibbs, Director

PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTES Our stellar UA cast has mastered the changes as I have rewritten Like Heaven throughout our process. Brent Gibbs is a playwright’s director. We’ve listened to the play a lot. In writing and rehearsing a play, the play reveals itself to you. This process knows no shortcut. Playwrights write plays to find out what they are. If you know my body of work, you might see Like Heaven as my anomaly play. A playwright finds her passion-portal into each play. How does a Latinx playwright, obsessed with politics, find her passion-portal into a lusty comedy set in small-town Kansas? A director from L.A. had this idea of bringing U.S. playwrights to live in Pulitzerprize winning playwright William Inge’s childhood home in Independence, Kansas. Edward Albee once said of the residency, “WHY the hell would you send playwrights to a place Bill could not wait to escape?” But the director did. Two by two. And like pairs of animals being loaded onto Noah’s Ark, we went. The director asked us to write 10-minute plays overnight to be produced the following day. They paraded a 1920’s dress and a suitcase in front of us. A young mom, I’ll call Joanna, auditioned that day. Her husband had taken a job there a week earlier. She had a half-finished theatre degree and two kids. (I told her that her college wanted her to finish that degree. Two years later, she wrote me that I had been right.) I imagined her at the foot of one of those aging Victorian homes that grace Independence, suitcase in hand and a blues song stuck in her throat. I had to fight to cast her. My producers assured me they knew all the “good actors, but behind her eyes I saw April’s sadness. Her eyes were my lifeline. She was my Like Heaven. After presenting the short play, I hit the pause button and waited. I wrote the fulllength play that next year in Minnesota bluff country, free of Independence’s local glare. Through workshop productions and readings, I fell in love. I fell in love with each of these women and their plights. They felt fully formed from their first words, like old friends I hadn’t spoken to in awhile, old friends who used to be different women then they are today. Not self-actualized yet, these women take the smallest of steps. No one would cast them as role models to put on display. We revel in these flawed human beings, sorting through their lives, like dirty laundry. Though it would be tempting to make Like Heaven behave, I’ve been true to her voice, to that play I found behind Joanna’s eyes. The other day, I got the good news, a woman was named Artistic Director of an illustrious festival in Kansas. She might be the young woman who auditioned for me that day in Independence. So, this is for her, for someone may have thought she’d ruined her life by quitting college, falling in love, and having a couple kids, because life can turn itself around when we start to steer. To steering! She dedicates her work, on this production, to the living memory of Sam Smiley.
