Ph.D. candidate in the aerospace and mechanical engineering
In 2023, the University of Arizona will open the new $99 million, seven-story Grand Challenges Research Building, which will house laboratories and flexible research space for interdisciplinary programs designed to advance research and discovery across optics, quantum computing, advanced communications and biomedical technologies.

Fascinated by space as a child, Athip was drawn to the University of Arizona because of the Space and Terrestrial Robotic Exploration (SpaceTREx) lab.
“There are not a lot of people doing the same scope of research that we are doing here at the U of A,” he says.
Working in a NASA-funded lab has afforded Athip the opportunity to interact and forge connections with many NASA officials and with the support of his mentor, Athip feels like he is building a strong foundation of work. “My mentor has been instrumental in shaping my career. He’s helped me write proposals and he’s showing me the direction on where to go to secure my foothold in the industry.”
