COMES TO SAAC TO PREP FOR CAREER FAIR
With the UAB Student-Athlete Career Fair right around the corner, four employers from a variety of organizations came to our SAAC meeting on Monday, February 8 to talk to our student-athletes about networking, interviewing, and how to navigate a career fair. Representatives from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Children’s of Alabama, Daxko and Aerotek were in attendance to provide their advice and insight based on questions asked by the student-athletes. The employers in attendance provided a variety of advice but left the crowd with solid recommendations and guidance. The variety in the employers and their insight demonstrated to the athletes that not all employers are the same, so it is very important to do your research on organizations and plan accordingly for your application and interview process. Additionally, we learned about the variety of resumes you can turn in and what employers are looking for. They discussed how to navigate salary talks with employers as well as how first impressions begin the second you come into the office. It was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to receive good advice right before the annual career fair next week. Panelists were Drew Ragon from Career Fair sponsor, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Sara Rogan from Children’s of Alabama, Beth Wolfe from Daxko, and Miles Walding from Aerotek. Two of the panelists were also collegiate student-athletes and provided great advice and expertise on transferring their student-athlete experience. The employers also indicated that student-athletes are great hires due to all of the skills they are able to bring to the table.

On how she lives out UAB SAAC’s motto: “This year I wanted to make sure I got more involved. Being in season, traveling, studying, and making free time for community service is a full-time job. Last semester I didn’t get to do everything I wanted to, so, I wanted to make sure I got more done this semester. Also, I feel that my team is my motivation to do more and to stay involved. To me, I believe my team has lived by the UAB SAAC motto.” On being a Division I Student-Athlete: “In order to be a Division I athlete you have to be dedicated. Being an athlete is very tiring and a lot of hard work. You have to be focused and determined. Being a Division I Athlete means working harder than the average student. It means there will be many days where you will be exhausted and tired, but you have to keep going. Being a Division I athlete means having pride in what you do, having pride in not only yourself but your team and school as well.
