LEADERSHIP INVOLVEMENT SERVICE

The first SAAC meeting of 2016 was held on Monday, January 25 and included great inspiration and motivation for the new semester and year. Women’s Softball Coach Marla Townsend came to pump our student-athletes up and get them excited to make a difference at UAB. She also spread inspiration through her engaging talk on what it means to be a Blazer. After Coach’s inspirational message, Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development, Justin Mackey pumped up our athletes on setting some great goals for this year, and during their time at UAB. UAB SAAC also welcomed the Alabama Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to come speak about their volunteer opportunities focusing on their upcoming Birmingham Muscle Walk, and their amazing MDA Summer Camp that will be held this June. The MDA brought a family who’s child was a participant at the camp last year, and shared their child’s experience with our students. The meeting was full of great energy and excitement to make a difference, and to continue serving the community.

I AM. I CAN. I WILL.

On Tuesday, January 19 the first Student-Athlete Development workshop of the spring was held. This time management workshop assisted 35 student-athletes from a variety of teams. Hometown: Mountain Top, Pennsylvania Major: Biology with a Minor in Chemistry Career Goal: To go to Medical School and become an Orthopedic Surgeon Most rewarding community service experience: Volunteering with Goal Ball at Lakeshore. I like working with those athletes because they love their sport so much and the teams have such good chemistry. On being a Division I Athlete: Being a Division I athlete to me means that I need to be the best person I can be on any given day. I need to be the hardest working person at practice, engaged in class, and helping in the community when I can. I may not be the fastest, the smartest, or the most devoted volunteer, but I need to be sure I gave the best I could on that given day.
