UAB SAAC

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is committed to providing a forum for student-athletes to express ideas, concerns, and opinions relating to NCAA and Conference USA legislation, as well as other issues that affect their welfare. SAAC is also committed to maintaining a positive environment that fosters a healthy relationship between athletic administrators and student-athletes. It seeks to provide an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes.

Division I SAAC Catherine Ragon (Women’s Tennis) was elected as the C-USA Division I SAAC representative for a 2 year term. Ragon is the first UAB Student-Athlete to hold a national position. Her responsibilities include: -Generating a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure -Soliciting student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation -Recommending potenital NCAA legislation -Reviewing, reacting, and commenting to the governance structure on legislation, activities and sunjects of interest. -Actively participating in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA -Promoting a positive student-athlete image

Freshman Leadership Institute The mission of the UAB Freshman Leadership Institute is to provide Leadership Development programming to incoming freshman student-athletes through an engaging course in order to develop student-athletes into responsible, ethical, and self-aware leaders as they embark on their collegiate experience as UAB Student-Athletes.

UABLeaders UABLeaders met four times throughout the academic year. This group was comprised of team captains or leaders from each program, as selected by their coaching staff. The aim of these sessions was to equip team leaders with valuable leadership tools they could use within their individual teams. Individual and group activities were utilized, along with guest speakers.

The inaugural UABLeaders group walked away with a better understanding of their personal leadership style, values, and goals within their programs.

Career Development

UAB Student-Athlete Development advanced their mission with the Career Game Plan for the 2015-2016 Academic Year. Along with requirements by class, students were able to take part in the “Dress to Impress� fashion show, professional career panel, and the second annual UAB Athletics Career Fair.

Dress�to�Impress�Fashion�Show Student-Athlete Attendance: 102 The Dress to Impress Fashion Show was held in Fall 2015 and featured student-athletes modeling what to wear & what not to wear in a professional setting. Guest judges from across campus added some flair to this fun, yet informative opportunity.

Professional�Career�Panel Student-Athlete Attendance: 42 The professional career panel was held in preparation for the Student-Athlete Career Fair. Four representatives from hiring organizations who also attended the career fair attended this wokrshop to answer students questions.

Student-Athlete�Career�Fair Student-Athlete Attendance: 127 The second annual UAB Athletics Career Fair was held in Bartow Arena to provide student-athletes with netowrking and career opportunities. 28 employers attended the fair to recruit and hire UAB student-athletes.
