Penny wars raises

$2,200 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

At the beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee met to establish goals for the upcoming school year. One of the goals for this year was to raise more money in Penny Wars than last year. In 2014, the UAB Blazers raised $1,100 in the first ever Penny Wars competition put on by Student-Athlete Development Department. The goal this year was to raise more than $1,500 in the second annual Penny Wars competition. The Blazers not only met their goal, but doubled the amount of money raised last year with a total of more than $2,200 raised for local charities. The Women’s Softball Team took the Penny Wars crown again this year for the second year in a row with 35,008 points. Closely followed by Women’s Track & Field , Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball and Women’s Soccer. The money raised in this competition will be given to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama, The Miracle League of Gardendale, and local families in need. The Blazers did a fantastic job of raising money for their community, and every penny counted towards making a difference. With more than $2,200 raised this year in Penny Wars, we are excited to see what next year will bring and how we can help our local community even more!

congratulations softball!

LEADERSHIP UPDATE

FRESHMEN LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE & UAB LEADERS

UAB Student-Athlete Development implemented the ďŹ rst ever leadership program this semester by integrating a Freshmen Leadership program for all incoming student-athletes and by developing a UABLeaders program focusing on current student-athletes serving as leaders on their teams and in their sport. The Freshmen Leadership Institute has come to an end for this semester and each student-athlete is currently concluding their sessions with their Leadership Mentor. As a part of the program conclusion, the student-athletes created their personal vision board including a leadership goal, community service goal, career goal and any personal goals they may have. The vision boards that each student-athlete made contained great creativity and amazing goals and aspirations. The UABLeaders program is held in a group setting and will continue through next semester. So far, the leaders have engaged in dynamic discussions and challenging activities to develop and enhance their leadership skill set to become stronger leaders on their teams and after graduation. They have developed relationships with other leaders on different teams, and have deepened their awareness of their values, learned about the importance of communication, and how to resolve conict effectively to create an impact and change in their future leadership endeavors.

CAITLIN ATTFIELD, WOMEN’S SOFTBALL Year: Senior

Hometown: Niagara Falls, NY Major: Kinesiology/Exercise Science Career Goal: To play professional softball and to make a positive impact in other people’s lives through coaching On how she and her team are living out UAB SAAC’s motto: We have signs in our locker room that say “serve.” It helps us to better serve our teammates and really put each other over ourselves. Being involved in the community is very important to our team as well because again its about others and making others happy. When you do things for others and not for yourself it not only benefits them but you also benefit. Leadership is one of the most important things to me because its something that I really want to improve on everyday. Something I’ve been working on is not only leading by example and doing the right thing but now helping others get better as well.
